About the JL Audio C3-650

Versatile speaker system for any space

The C3-650 component system uses a 6-1/2" mica-filled polypropylene woofer that covers the midrange and low frequencies strongly and accurately. A specially designed frame resists unwanted resonances, keeping your music free from interference. If you mount the tweeter separately, simply install a phase plug into the woofer and the sound will disperse smoothly throughout your vehicle.
Convertible speaker system

Versatile speaker system for any space

JL Audio's Evolution C3 speaker systems allow you to choose the best configuration for great sound in your vehicle. Mount the woofers and tweeters separately, and a C3 component system will fill your car with incredibly detailed, rich, and crystal-clear music, perfectly positioned in your listening space. In vehicles with limited space, you can mount the C3 tweeter inside the woofer to create a full-range, coaxial speaker that still performs with breathtaking impact.

Advanced material construction leads to clean musical reproduction

The C3-650 component system uses a 6-1/2" mica-filled polypropylene woofer that covers the midrange and low frequencies strongly and accurately. A specially designed frame resists unwanted resonances, keeping your music free from interference. If you mount the tweeter separately, simply install a phase plug into the woofer and the sound will disperse smoothly throughout your vehicle.

Silk tweeters and versatile crossover networks

The C3 tweeters use ferrofluid cooling to handle extreme levels of high-frequency information without overheating. Mounted separately or coaxially, these 1" silk dome tweeters broadcast crisp musical detail evenly without harshness. Separate, outboard crossovers use premium components to direct the signal flow to your woofers and tweeters. You can select from three midrange settings and four levels of tweeter presence to match the speaker system to your listening environment.

Installation note: You'll need a pair of our universal backstraps to install the tweeters in the factory locations.

Been there done that with audio electronics, my son blew the cheaper speakers, I had, won't name them. I have a 2005 GMC Extended cab truck, it had the bose system before I replaced the cheap factory crap. So here's the scoop, these JL Audio C3-650 are not the most expensive or best on the market but these bad boys hold there own. I've been researching replacement speakers for over a month, from Hertz to tin buck two. Like I said been there done that for a long time, since 1983. Now I'm grown up not really, but an electronic engineer. But I love LOUD HARD and CLEAR ROCK N ROLL. I travel the world so you get the picture. What these speakers bring to the table is clear loud music no matter what your kind of music is. I also have two 12's subs keeping the bass. the cross overs are awesome and wont blow, when it gets to hot it cuts off the speaker, and goes into time out and doesn't burn up. I could say a lot more stuff to wow you, but I'll let the speakers do that. I very much recommend these speakers to anybody who cant afford the higher end, by the way I liked them so much I bought another pair, now I'm, really rocking. Just make sure your amp has a HPF filter they are not made for bass. the bass freq will blow them if you go above the recommended spec. My next step will be two 10w6v3d4'S TO really ROCK. By the way Crutchfield goes out of there way to accommodate any and all questions, no question is to dumb for them, the only stupid question is the one not asked.

Pros: The Whole system

Cons: not a thing

Just hooked these up with a Alpine HU and a Fosgate amp and they sound amazing... they have a clean smooth, rich, bassy sound to them, just enough highs to sound great! I have C3-600's in the front doors that sound about the same, together with a JL Audio bass and they create a music experience.. I've done very little adjusting with the head unit EQ and I've just been amazed,, JL Audio makes some incredible speakers.. I can't say enough about them..

Pros: Good rich clean sound.. They just sound great..

Cons: I have nothing here..

I had these installed my a custom shop here in town. Soundsational does excellent work anyone in the Indianapolis area. One of the component sets blew the woofer because i had them running off of the head unit power. Crutchfield immediately sent out a replacement to swap them out, great customer service! I paired these with a JL audio XD600/6 and ran 4 channels to these and the other 2 to the rear speakers. Wow, what a difference. Pair these with a good, clean amp and you are in business.

Features

Woofers: The JL Audio Evolution C3-650 convertible component system includes woofers with injection-molded polymer frames, mineral filled polypropylene cones, rubber surrounds, ferrite magnets, and 1" voice coils with Kapton formers. In the center of each cone is a phase plug; the phase plug can be removed and the tweeter mounted in its place to create a coaxial speaker.

Tweeters: The 1" silk dome tweeters are Ferro fluid cooled and use neodymium magnets. Silk is lightweight and great for high frequency extension and efficiency. It is also designed for durability in the extreme automotive environment. Flush mount and surface mount housings are included, along with fixtures to coaxially mount the tweeters to the woofers.

Tweeter Dimensions:

Frame Diameter Cutout Diameter Mounting Height Mounting Depth
Flush Mount 2.134" 1.875" 0.25" 0.853"
Surface Mount 1.926" Screw holes only 0.981" Screw depth only

Coaxial Mounting: The tweeters can be mounted in the center of the woofers to create coaxial speakers. When the tweeters are mounted to the woofers the speaker is taller; the mounting height increases to 0.775", 0.575" for the tweeter protrusion.

Two-way Crossover System: The C3 component system utilizes a 2-way crossover system with Mylar capacitors and air-core inductors:

  • High Pass: second order (12 dB/octave slope); four tweeter level settings are selectable to compensate for mounting location or orientation; +2.0 dB, Reference, -2 dB, and -4 dB
  • Low Pass: first order (6 dB/octave slope)
  • Midrange Presence: there are three settings that affect the amplitude of the upper midrange response, designed to compensate for mounting location or orientation; choose High, Reference, or Low

Tweeter Protection: The crossover network has an electronic tweeter protection circuit built in; it monitors the current and disconnects the tweeter when it senses and overload. The circuit automatically resets once the overload is removed.

Crossover Wiring: The terminal strip will accept bare wire or spade connectors up to 0.32" wide (the included crimp-on spade connectors are 0.255" wide).

Crossover Dimensions:

  • Width: 3.368"
  • Height: 1.415"
  • Depth: 4.739" (plus wire)

Connection Note: The C3 component system comes with no speaker wire. Instead, a number of spade connectors and quick slides are included in the hardware pack to be crimped onto speaker wire you provide.

Size Classification Note: Crutchfield has traditionally referred to this size speaker as a 6-3/4", while some manufacturers, including JL Audio, call it a 6-1/2". Please enter your vehicle information to confirm fit.

Power Handling: JL Audio publishes several power specifications for this speaker, 75 watts continuous power handling (RMS), 225 watts peak music power, and 25-150 watts recommended amplifier power (RMS). We've listed the conservative combination of 25-75 watts RMS in the specs table.

Q
On your website says JL c3 650 won't fit my 2002 Toyota Camry LE front Door ? How about if I was to use them as a Coaxial should they fit
[ Felix  Apr 20, 2019 ]
1 answer
A
No the limiting factory on the fit is the mounting depth. The C3 is just a little bit too deep for the available space in the front doors of that 2002 Camry. You could fit the JL Audio C2 component https://bit.ly/2VBNr2J

Q
It says you can use them as a coaxial. Can you wire them without using the huge crossovers?? If so which terminals on the speaker get used?
[ Jay  Nov 15, 2014 ]
3 answers
A
Yes they can be used without the crossover but the tweeter and woofer are on separate terminals and must have wires ran to each one. IMO I wouldn't run it this way due to unwanted frequencies going to the woofer and tweeter. Also it could possibly change the ohms and cause problems for amplifiers or head units whichever is to be used.
[ JOHN  Nov 20, 2014 ]
A
I am using them as coaxial, but I am certainly using the crossovers. I want the flexibility, and I'm skeptical how the speakers would work without them. They are clearly part of the designed package. My expectation is that they provide protection for the speakers as well as controlling the sound. I'm driving the speakers with 900/5 amp and would not want to risk leaving the crossovers out, so I am making room for them. Each speaker has a pair of terminals, whether you connect them as component or coaxial. I download the installation manuals from the Crutchfield site before buying to better inform my buying choices, and that would probably clear up your question.
[ EUGENE  Nov 17, 2014 ]
A
You have to use the crossovers.
