Just installed this kit last night. It's a really nice clean installation except now my 3 climate controls light up as soon as the car is fired up. Should this be happening? There's an orange "illumination" wire that I wasn't sure what to attach to. Is that maybe my issue? I just didn't see the need for them to be lit up if I have the dash lights off during the day

Perfect for the car with all the ellipses

1998 Ford Taurus

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee review (What's this?)

Without this kit, I guess I would have duct-taped my retrofit car stereo into the dash. Not only did this kit cleanly mount the car stereo, it came with every piece of wiring and all the adapters to get from the dash to the trunk where the speaker connections are located on the factory radio/amp. It connected not only the speakers but also the power with labled wiring, not just colors. That was a huge help since I am partially color blind. In running the cable bundle from the trunck to the dash, I wrapped the bundled the entire way in Super 33+ for extra protection. And with the instructions provided by Crutchfield, I knew exactly where to run the bundle and exactly which panels to remove and replace along the way. As a bonus, when I moved the heating and air controls from the old radio to this faceplate, the controls shifted to the left and out from behind where my cell phone is mounted. This is a perfect dash and wiring kit.

Pros: Clean mount. Maintains all heating and air controls. Every part you will need.

Cons: Haven't found any yet.

Just installed this in a 99 Taurus. Took me a few hours, but looks great in the car It is easy to install, but can be time consuming if you've never done it before, since wiring needs to be ran from the amp in the trunk Well worth it.

Pros: Good quality Great fit Easy to install

Cons: Not really a big deal, but I had to trim some plastic off of the right climate control dial cut out. for the plug to fit properly Instructions could be a little more detailed, but with a little common sense, it's not that hard.

Verified employee review (What's this?)

I have purchased this product twice, and I wish I had never puchased it at all. My second purchase was to replace the first. In both cases, the brackets that actually hold the stereo into the faceplate fail to lock and hold the stereo in place - even with a rear bracket installed. In addition, the package does not come with the springs that hold the faceplate into the dash. This is not described on the website, and it has caused me no end of trouble because one of my OEM springs is broken.

Pros: Looks nice, fits the dash as advertised

Cons: missing key elements (e.g. screws to hold the switches in place and the springs that hold the faceplate in the dash). Reuse of existing parts required. This is not described on the website. In my Taurus, half of the screws I was supposed to reuse don't exist, and one of the springs I was supposed to reused is broken. On top of that, the stereo brackets don't fully lock in place and hold the stereo securely. Very poor product and not worth the money.

Reviews for the Ford/Mercury Factory Stereo Integration Package

I would not recomend this for a novice installer. You need a few more tools than are described in the instructions. You will need a small set of metric torx bits, the tool to remove factory unit and a set of small metric sockets. The kit was complete with all you need to install the new stereo. You do not need to buy an antenna adapter,it comes with the kit.But all in all I was able to figure it out in about 3 hours.Had to go to a stereo installer shop to have them remove the factory unit. Would recomend this kit for a good looking install.

Pros: Very complete

Cons: Instructions lacking a few tools needed.

I am so happy to have a new stereo system in my car that I can listen to CDs and my Ipod. However it was not as simple to install as we had hoped. Had to run wires from the trunk up to the stereo. And then connect the wires to the stereo it was not already set up. Took a couple of hours.

Pros: New stereo!!!

Cons: Long hook up time. Be ready to spend some time in your car! And be careful while taking things out! Don't throw anything from the original away until you are done. Need the front and back of the climate controls.

All in all it seems to be a good product, doesn't seem "cheap". The outside edge of the main unit has a felt lining so when you're on a bouncy road you don't have a plastic to plastic rubbing squeak. Nice wires and connecters HOWEVER it was missing the "7" FD22 Wiring adapter harness" that is required for my 1998 Ford Taurus so make sure when you get it check to see if it's in the package, in the image of the product it's the harness to the left of the main unit with 1 big black connecter with 1 small black and 1 small white connecters on the other end. The Scosche directions that come with the unit are "ok", they could have a little more and clearer info. Crutchfield also sends their own set of installation instructions that are pretty nice but still lacks a little info.

I absolutely love this kit. I own a 1999 Ford Taurus, and this little thing fit like a charm. Installing this was easier then i thought it was going to be. the hardest part of my whole installation was getting the factory radio out since the pins were kind of bent and didn't want to pop out. but after that it was smooth sailing. I still need to organize the wires under my dash since they hang low a little, but i still want to install a Sub, so i'll wait till then. I love that crutchfield lowered the price of this since i bought a radio with it. it made things a lot easier then trying to buy it locally. I recommend this to anyone that needs to use it. don't be afraid to get a new radio, it looks nice too. Theres just one thing that was more of a nuisance then a Con, is that the new temperature controls are back lit red, which makes it look like an older Pontiac,, but its easy to get used to.

Gets the job done, but not trivial

Without getting into custom dash mods, this is probably your only option for replacing the factory stereo if you have an old Ford like me. And apparently this is only good for the pneumatic controlled climate control - I am not sure if there is another option for electronic controls They layout of the controls is similar to the original, however the rectangular profile of the receiver itself doesn't blend as smoothly into the rounded contours of the panel. I suppose you can't fit a square peg into a round hole without some compromises. Also, the upper display area becomes just a blank expanse of black. I would prefer to see some more imaginative styling... Installation was not trivial, but the kit gives you most everything that you need to ultimately get the job done. I had a few difficulties...

I had no problem with this intallation. Just be careful detaching factory plugs. The vacuum plug has flimsy plastic. I had a couple of tabs break off the part you transfer to the new faceplate. Luckily the plug was secure when I re-attached it. No vacuum leaks so far.I took my time and routed cables along races at the drivers side door sills and up the back seat. took better part of a day, but i want good clean install. I don't see the complaint from other reviewer who said the panel lights shone thru at edges. I love Scoshe accsessories they are of very good quality. Thanks Crutchfield your phone staff is great. It was a pretty straight-forward installation. Had some difficullty transferring some of the heat controls to the new unit. Also, and I'm not sure if this is due to the CD player I purchased but there wasn't enough depth inside the dash to get a secure fit so I had to improvise. I would recommend it to others though. The antenna and wiring harness extension make it well worth the price. Troy C- Kalamazoo, Michigan

Crutchfield gives very clear instructions and most of the wires just need to be plugged in. i would give this kit a 5 star except for that at night time it looks dumb. the lights behind the a/c controls shine through the plastic and makes the whole lower half of the kit glow and it makes it look cheap. thats the only thing tho. everything is working perfectly on my a/c and my new kenwood 342u. and the price on it is great. you cant beat crutchfield prices OR customer service!

As always, Crutchfield does a thorough job of documentation with this product. It was fairly easy to follow the instructions included to remove the old dash piece and install the new. However, I will agree with a prior review that said that a rear mounting strap should be included. My CD player skips a lot more than it did in my last car and I think it's because of lack of support at the rear of the unit. Once the weather gets warmer here, I will install a strap to correct that.

This was an excellent purchase for me! All of the heat, rear defrost, fan speed controls are you original ones (the guide walks you through accomplishing this). My aftermarket Sony fit just fine. Quite an eloquent look, for it looks just like the factory original! Granted, it was a lot of work to run the wiring harness from the rear tuner amplifier to the front to get the speakers and antenna to work, but was far worth it! You don't have to be a specialist to install this. You just need to be able to take your time and read, following each step. It took me about 4 hours from start to finish, however, I had it right the first time and everything works! Thanks Crutchfield!

I took my car to a local shop to have my stereo installed. They used this kit for my Ford Taurus to install it. They had to do some creative work behind the dash to get the kit and stereo to fit! Thank goodness he knew what he was doing. Also, the Rear Defroster does not work. I'm going to have to return this kit and get another brand.

I did not know that I would have to be an electrician to install this item. Making up electrical connections and removing HVAC controls and reinstalling them. Accidently pulled out one of the frail yellow wires for the lights on the HVAC controls when installing the radio. Yellow wires very flimsy, caution is needed when sliding in the radio. Make sure you have butt electrical connectors for the wire connections. Looks good but make sure you give yourself plenty of time when doing it.

I got this because I have a great head that was in my old car that I wanted in my new used Sable. I was quite dissapointed at the amount of work that has to go into the wireing. I figured this would be like most installs and all I would have to do was wire an adapter to my heads wiring and plug it in to the existing wiring harness in the dash and just pop it back in. That's not the case, a lot of interior trim has to be pulled out to run the 20+' lines to the trunk. The plate itself is well made and looks pretty much OEM I used the metal frame tha came with my stereo to mount my radio and cut the trim ring to fit over that. It looks great. I haven't installed it yet I just poped the new plate in the dash to see how it all fit and it does look good I am just not up mto pulling the car apart in the cold and probably will get to it later. I have installed 100s of stereos in cars and this one so far has been the one that requiers the most work.

This was a very good product. I thought it was a very easy install for a stange automobile design. I don't have an issue with the quality of the plastic as some other reviewers had. I do however agree with many that the way the receiver mounts to the plastic is weak. Definately get a metal strap (if you don't have the one that came with your head unit) and mount it to the back of the radio and to the plastic piece. I can see how people were having their head units fall into the cavity. The plastic clips that hold the head unit on are pretty insufficient. Also the instructions could be a little more detailed. Over all a very good product for a stange design.

Good solution to a dumb design, and it worked well for me. The instructions could use some more detail. Removing the edging tape to pry open the bottom of the original dash insert to get at the clips holding one of the plugs was a bit hard to figure out and do properly, but we succeeded. It was unclear that methods A and B for mounting the receiver in the opening were 2 options, only the second of which worked with my unit. Be sure to seat all the plugs securely in the new kit.

Good solution for an odd dashboard

Verified employee review (What's this?)

This is good solution to a badly designed car. I love the Sable but this dashboard and the wiring they use is abusive to installations. The new faceplate is sturdy, and works well with my stereo. If your stereo has the metal frame insert, you can do without the supplied plastic side clips. All the complaints I have read about the cheaply made defrost button, too bright backlights, etc seem petty compared to the ability to install your own stereo in this car. The only complaint I have is with the instructions. I was able to remove the existing face-plate and stereo, get the knobs off and onto the new faceplate, the '99 wiring adapter went on easily as well. What needs clarifying is that there is a box in the trunk under the carpet that the last wiring harness plugs into. Once you find this it is clear that the 14' harness plugs in after removing one of the plugs. The antenna has to be removed from the same box and plugged into the harness. From here, it is a simple matter of removing the back seat, removing the plastic caps over the running boards on the driver side door frames, running the harness through the back seat frame (following the existing wiring path) under the carpet along the driver's side up to the front of the car, up under the dash and to the stereo compartment. Then it is a simple matter of splicing the appropriate wires to your stereo's harness. Don't forget to reassemble your back seat and replace the plastic rocker panel covers 8-).

I have had my 1999 Taurus for over a year, and I finally got around to installing an aftermarket headunit(Dual XHD6425). The instructions included in the kit were rather wishy-washy and didn't go into too much detail, but pretty much anyone with a few hours and some basic tools/knowledge would be able to do this install. It took me a little over 2.5 hours. In the dark. A few problems I had were concerning the mounting of the new receiver. There isn't much room so you will have to mount it with the 2 black plastic pieces included in the Scosche kit. If your radio came with a metal din mount, it probably won't work right. There are about 10-15 wires up front that need to be spliced to the harness that (should have) come with your new headunit. As for the dash kit itself, it does have some weaknesses. The lights shine right through the climate control knobs, and the entire climate control area looks cheaply done. However you reuse the climate control knobs and switches from your original stereo so you know they won't fall apart immediately. The rear defrost switch is very cheap looking and the light for it is way too bright. Everything appears to be fairly solid and I didn't break anything in the install process. Overall I am pleased with the looks and performance of this unit, but I think the build quality could be better. With a few small changes this could be a superb product, but even as it is, it's a good value and it does it's job well.

Crutchfield usually dispenses high-quality products. This is not one of them. Pressed from a single sheet of plastic, it is a little flimsy and looks a little cheap. It lets a ton of light through the climate control section of the panel, and the defroster button looks horrible. The DIN-sized cutout was a smidge bigger than the DIN cage that came with my stereo. This, and the strange shape of the stuff on the back (because of the Taurus stuff) created a situation where I couldn't secure the cage properly. (Rest assured, this isn't my first rodeo.) The directions were more-or-less well written and complete, and everything fit well otherwise. The felt tape around the panel's edge was a nice touch to help prevent dash squeaks. After buying this and being unsatisfied, I went and bought another panel, which is better constructed and better looking. Using the wiring that came with the Scosche kit (which was a snap to install and run), I had a successful and good-looking install. My recommendation for Crutchfield: drop this panel.

This was great except for the massive amount of wire to run from the trunk (that is not this company's fault - that belongs to Ford's design of the audio system placement). Works great and am very pleased with the finished result. Do prepare to spend some time to properly run this wiring assembly.

This is a pretty good kit when you consider the unusual design of the integrated radio and heater controls it is replacing. You definitely need to add a support for the radio you're installing, though. I tried it without any extra support and the radio fell back into the dash after a few weeks.

Okay, first let me say that I am not completely disapointed with this product. It did make the install of the unit easier. Everything installed perfectly and took about 1 hour. What I am disapointed about is the plastic brackets that hold the head unit in place. Very flimsy. I first time I installed the unit, I tried to install from the rear of the faceplate, because there were no gaps showing around the headunit. Looked pretty good that way, until I hit a bump and the head fell inside the dash. The plastic brackets have 2 sets of very weak clips that clip into the face plate. I had to remove the head unit and reinstall it through the front to get a stable install. I guess I will just have to deal with the gap around the head unit. They could at least throw in a head unit support bracket just in case you don't have one. My Pioneer MP3800 did not come with one. Also, they could of made some type of support for brackets, maybe 2 screws to hold them to the face plate.

I recieved this item promptly, just as soon as UPS could get it here. This is a great alternative to the stock face plate or a cd changer in the trunk. The instructions are pretty clear, just requires a little bit of thinking. Overall this is a great product...the only thing I would change about it is the plastic side pieces, they when connected to the mainplate are a little flimsy and need some coaxing.
