Happy with it.

Hooked up to my OBDII port and adjusted the angle of the HUD and the OBDII option stopped working unit went in to GPS mode and would not go back to OBDII mode. So it is in GPS mode and works well. Easy to see. Adjusting the unit on the dash and the reflection film that came with it was a little frustrating. The sticky pad is great holds the HUD unit very securely. Happy with it..

Pros: Sticky pad, size, easy to see.

Cons: OBDII port failed.

I like an easy install, and installing this Scosche HUD was easy!!! Plugged right into OBD port - tucked wire away - stuck it to the dash.... <5 min to install :) Zero programming required and it projects up-to-date speed and fuel consumption almost instantly right on the windshield, which is clear and visible even in daylight

Pros: Easy install No programming

Cons:

More details on the Scosche HUD580GC

Product Research

Features

Overview: The Scosche HUD580GC is a heads-up display that lets you keep your eyes on the road while projecting important vehicle information directly onto your windshield. The bright multi-colored LED panel can display your speed, in either MPH or KPH (kilometers per hour), engine RPM's, and status indicators. It also features programmable alerts for speed, temperature, and voltage. The display can automatically adjust the LED brightness for day/night-time driving and can power on/off automatically. The HUD580GC can gather vehicle information 2 different ways, either with the included OBDII (On-Board Diagnostics) adapter (for 2001 and newer vehicles) or using GPS for older vehicles. Since the OBDII can access more vehicle information that can be provided by GPS, some of the features won't be available in GPS mode.

OBDII: Included with the HUD580GC is an OBDII adapter that plugs directly into the 16-pin OBDII port on your vehicle (2001 and newer vehicles) and a mini-B USB plug for the display piece. Displayed information is gathered from the vehicle's data system through the OBDII port along with power and ground for running the heads-up display, so no other wiring is required. Features that can be displayed in OBDII mode include:

  • Speedometer Readout: The largest character set on the display is the vehicle Speed, in either MPH or KPH, located in the center of the display area.
  • Left Side Units-Display: In the upper left corner of the display is the left side Units-Display which can show engine RPM, Driving Distance, Water Temperature, and Driving Time. Underneath the left side Units-Display are icons for each feature that can be displayed in that Units-Display (RPM, Driving Distance, etc.).
  • Right Side Units-Display: The upper right corner of the display area can show Fuel Consumption and Water Temperature. Underneath the right side Units-Display are icons showing which feature its displaying, either G/H or MPG for Fuel Consumption.
  • Display Icons: Located along the bottom of the display are 9 icons representing functions of the display unit as well as typical vehicle indicators. These include: Menu settings, Shift Reminder, Check Engine, Speed Warning, Light Sensor, Audio Warning, Fatigue Warning, Low Voltage Warning, and High Water Temperature Warning.
  • RPM and Slower Speed Indicators: The display features 2 sets of multi-segment LED meters representing engine RPM, up to 4000 RPM, and Slower Speed indicator, which stops displaying when the vehicle speed exceeds 50 mph.

Note: If the vehicle's ECU doesn't provide data for some features, then this information cannot be displayed by the HUD580GC.

GPS Mode: The HUD580GC includes built-in GPS, which can be used when installing in a 2000 or earlier model vehicle. Since the display isn't linked to the vehicle's computer in this mode, certain features like Check Engine, and Shift Reminder won't be available. Also, it may take up to 30 seconds for the display unit to gather information such as speed or voltage. Display features for GPS mode include:

  • Speedometer Readout: The largest character set on the display is the vehicle Speed, in either MPH or KPH, located in the center of the display area.
  • Left Side Units-Display: In the upper left corner of the display is the left side Units-Display which can show Driving Distance, Driving Time, and Voltage, with icons for each underneath the Units-Display.
  • Right Side Units-Display: The upper right corner of the display area can show a Clock or Driving Time.
  • Compass: The upper center area can display a compass, showing the vehicle's heading.
  • Satellite Signal: A multi-segment LED meter will display the GPS signal level.
  • Slower Speed Indicator: This multi-segment LED meter represents slower speeds and stops displaying when the vehicle exceeds 62 MPH.
  • Display Icons: Located along the bottom of the display are 6 icons representing functions of the display unit. These include: Menu settings, Speed Warning, Light Sensor, Audio Warning, Fatigue Warning, and Low Voltage Warning.

Audible Warnings: The HUD580GC can be set to give you an audible warning when visual warning icons are activated such as Speed Warning or High Water Temperature. Audible Warnings can be easily turned on and off using the Scroll Wheel on one side of the unit.

Auto Power Off: When the vehicle is turned off, the display will sense the lower voltage and shut itself off. Auto Power Off may take between 10 seconds and 1 minute to shut down. When wired to the OBDII connector, the display unit gets powered from it. When in GPS mode, the unit gets powered from the included lighter adapter. Note: If the vehicle's lighter socket doesn't power off with the ignition, the display unit will have to be manually unplugged or an additional hardwired lighter socket (sold separately) will need to be added.

Fatigue Warning: After 4 hours of continuous driving, the HUD580GC will flash a warning icon as a reminder to stay awake and alert.

Controls: Two controls on one side of the display unit are used for powering and setting it up.

  • Power Switch: This selector switch is used to determine how the HUD580GC will operate, either in OBDII or GPS mode.
  • Scroll/Select Wheel: This spring-loaded wheel can be pushed forward or backwards to toggle up or down through the Menu system. Pushing straight in acts as the Select button. To enter the Menu, the Scroll/Select Wheel gets pushed in for 5 seconds or more. This control is also used to change Units in each display area.

Installation: The HUD580GC is designed to sit on top of the dashboard in front of the driver and reflect its display onto the windshield. A "sticky" rubber pad is provided for the display unit to sit securely on, keeping it from sliding around. The display may be reflected directly onto the windshield, but due to its angle or rake, the image may be distorted or "doubled". In this case, a clear plastic film is provided to stick on to the windshield providing a clear view in all conditions, day or night.

Wiring: The display unit can either be powered from the vehicle's OBDII port, with the provided 70" adapter cable, or from the lighter socket, with the provided 8' lighter adapter cable. Both cord terminate into a mini-B USB (2.0) plug that goes into one side of the display unit.

Specifications:

  • Display Size: 5.8" (diagonally)
  • Display Type: Multicolor LED
  • Operating Temperature: -40˚ F to 176˚ F
  • Operating Voltage: 9 - 16 VDC
  • Operating Current: 400 mA (@12 VDC)

Yes! GPS signal is independent of vehicle except for the power cord furnishing the 12V DC to the HUD.

No it doesn't, it only shows speed, miles, gas mileage etc.
