About the Sennheiser HD 280 Pro

A "studio staple" that works well at home and the office

There's a reason Sennheiser still produces the iconic HD 280 Pro headphones. These classics earned their reputation in the recording studio, but their clear, well-balanced sound is great for listening to music as well. They are so detailed and accurate that we used them as our "control" headphones when developing our SpeakerCompare™ technology for auditioning speakers online virtually.

There's a reason Sennheiser still produces the iconic HD 280 Pro headphones. They are so detailed and accurate that we used them as our "control" headphones when developing our SpeakerCompare™ technology for auditioning speakers online virtually.

The padded earcups significantly reduce external sound, so the headphones can be used in the office or high-noise environments. They also swivel for single-ear monitoring, and allow the headphones to fold flat for easy storage.

From the review Sennheiser HD 280 Pro Headphones: Comfortable sound

"The HD 280 Pros are a good, basic set of headphones that can be a marked improvement over the earbuds that come with most portable audio devices. Even if you're not a DJ in a club, the tight seal of the earcups and the solid sound reproduction of the headphones make a winning combination. Whether you're looking for a good set of headphones for work, or just want better-than-average headphones for on-the-go listening, consider the Senneheiser HD 280 Pro headphones."

Product Research

Design: The Sennheiser HD 280 Pro headphones adjust to the shape of your head, with their joints, flexible materials and extendable arms. The closed design attenuates ambient noise up to 32 dB. They are very comfortable, even if used for long periods due to their light weight, soft, circum-aural ear cushions, and padded, adjustable headband.

Magnet System: These headphones use neodymium magnets, offering high efficiency and light weight.

Eliptical Circumaural Earcups: The HD 280 Pro headphones feature an around-the-ear design, with soft ear cups to provide optimum comfort in those places where sturdy material would rest on your head.

Impedance: With a 64 Ω impedance, the HD 280s are compatible with nearly any source.

Collapsible: The headphones fold for easy storage.

Single-Sided Cord: The coiled cable attaches to only one side (left), so it's less likely to get tangled when you move.

Full Size Adapter: The 1/4" adapter is threaded so it locks in place.

Replaceable Parts: Sennheiser headphones are modular for long service life. Ear cushions, headbands, and cables are easily snapped out so new ones, which can be ordered from the manufacturer, can take their place.

Customer Q&A

Crutchfield asked: Why did you buy this?
Looking for a new pair of personal listening devices. Want to compare these headphones to a pair of Sennheiser earbuds I already own, a pair of Klipsch earbuds, and a pair of Tascam over-the-ear headphones to see what I like best for listening to music and guided meditations. Can't afford all three, though, so will be sending at least one back. [ Andy  May 01, 2020 ]
previous experience with Sennheiser and Crutchfield. All good. [ nick  Mar 18, 2019 ]
This is my 4th (or 5th) pair! I have a set at home, at work and one in my drum kit! I do wish the earpads lasted longer. They sound amazing and the isolation is great for drummers! [ curtis  Jan 30, 2019 ]
Customer Reviews/Price Point [ JEFFREY  Nov 26, 2018 ]
Bought this because of price, good reviews and noise isolation capabilities. [ Richard  May 18, 2018 ]
for our church sound system [ Pedro  May 10, 2018 ]
Have used Sennheiser headphones before and have been very happy with their performance. Only complaint is that the wires entering the ear piece tend to tear up. [ Austin  Feb 24, 2018 ]
Seems to be very well regarded and widely available. [ CHARLES  Sep 04, 2017 ]
Sennheiser reputation, special price, no sales tax, free shipping. [ David L.  Sep 03, 2017 ]
Best reviewed model in my price range. [ Ellen  Apr 21, 2017 ]
we use these heaphones for audio reference. I like that they are fairly true to audio that you are receiving, not a lot of induced bass. These do seem to sound better after breaking in. Only negative is that they do get somewhat uncomfortable after wearing a while. [ RON  Mar 30, 2017 ]
they were a gift - sound great [ SUZETTE  Feb 18, 2017 ]
After reading every review and recommendations, these seemed like the best choice. it was pretty close with a different brand, but these appear to have more padding. [ James  Jan 25, 2017 ]
These "cans" were recommended by friends in the recording industry. I have 2 wireless and 2 wired versions of these phones - one for my computer, one for my TV, one for my tablet, one for my phone. Crazy, huh? Love these phones! [ Ernest  Dec 31, 2016 ]
Nice headphones for the price. [ Gary  Dec 23, 2016 ]
Best frequency response for the buck. [ bradford  Dec 11, 2016 ]
awesome sound quality at an affordable price [ ROBERT  Jun 20, 2016 ]
to replace a damaged HD280 for a good neighbor [ Thomas D.  Jan 27, 2016 ]
I've read enough reviews for Sennheiser headphones to know that this was a good decision. I'm mainly using this set for a PC while listening to iTunes and also for gaming. As I don't do much talking in online games, I figured that the SH Gaming headset wasn't worth it to me. Besides, I play games when my wife's at work and I usually use my Bose PC speakers. These will work on those rare occasions she's home and I want to listen to my music or play games. [ Jeffrey  Dec 29, 2015 ]
My husband commented that he need a new set of studio headphones and these were recommended and highly rated. [ Barbara  Dec 14, 2015 ]

3 questions already asked

Do these plug into an AV receiver (denon) which is all I need them for?
[ Mark  Jun 20, 2019 ]
2 answers
Unless the av receiver has a headphone jack (like on your phone or previously like on a Walkman :)) you will need an adaptor for these to work.
[ Emily  Jun 20, 2019 ]
Yes, as long as your AV receiver has a standard headphone jack.
[ Glen  Jun 20, 2019 ]
I am looking for a set to use on long airline flights, how would these do?
[ Gene  Mar 19, 2014 ]

Pretty well in my view. They are very comfortable, and well sealed. These are my primary "travel" headphones.
[ Alec  Mar 16, 2017 ]
We have not received any answers from other customers on your question. I would recommend reaching out to an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They should be able to help answer your question.

Can other people in the room hear the tv still even when you have the headset on?
[ Nancy  Mar 04, 2014 ]

It depends on how load the volume is. My wife tells me she can hear when I use them at a higher level, so there is a degree of bleed for a few feet around them.
[ Alec  Mar 16, 2017 ]
[ James  Mar 14, 2014 ]
Not sure I understand the question...? Other folks in the room not wearing the headphones will surely be able to hear the television... they will not hear the music/noise coming from the headphones... those wearing the headphones will not hear the television and will only hear the source of the audio they are listening to with the headphones. I love mine. They're large and you look a bit like an offensive coordinator on the field of a football game, but for private listening within the house they do the trick of great audio and shut out the rest of the noise in the house.
[ JUSTIN  Mar 05, 2014 ]
No. The sound isolation properties ( as well as the fidelity, and sensitivity in terms of using these headphones with an MP3 player or similar device ) of these headphones is very good, I originally bought these for a plane flight to Ireland. I do have to say that the pressure on the area around the ear limits the amount of time that you can wear the headphones. You can try to stretch the headband, but be careful not to distort or over bend it. If you purchase these headphones also purchase a 10 or 20 foot non-coiled ( or straight ) extension cord because the coil cord built in when stretched put a torsional force on the headphones ( makes them want to turn on your head ). I would purchase these headphones again and recommend them to others. Nancy if you have any more questions don't hesitate to ask.
