Value-packed wireless headphones

If you're looking for a solid set of Bluetooth headphones from a reputable brand, here's a smart choice. The Sennheiser HD 4.40BT headphones play music wirelessly from your phone and boast up to 25 hours of battery life. They're also comfortable and affordable, and they deliver strong Sennheiser sound with deep bass.

We've carried Sennheiser for so long, I often assume they're a household name. But if you don't know this celebrated headphone maker, they've been at it for over 70 years. So even grabbing a so-called "entry-level" pair of their wireless headphones should promise you good performance.

My hands-on experience

"I got a chance to try these Sennheiser HD 4.40BT headphones... Light and comfortable. They play quite loud for Bluetooth headphones, so they work well on the go. I thought the powerful bass gave them a lot of energy, and I consider them a strong buy at this price.”

 — Jeff Miller, Crutchfield headphone guy

Comfort and convenience

Personally, I appreciate the modest design of the Sennheiser HD 4.40BT — not too plain, but not too showy, either. I think it's more important that headphones feel good, since you could be wearing them for long periods of time. Their oversized ear cups and well-padded headband help ensure they fit nicely.

And thanks to that built-in Bluetooth, you can keep your phone nearby or in your pocket while you move around freely. You can control your tunes or take phone calls using the tactile buttons on the right earcup.

Great Product

Crutchfield customer from Pelham, AL on 7/31/2019

I am a big fan of Sennheiser products. I chose this set of headphones because I needed some wireless ones. (My wired earbuds went through the washer and dryer!) the 4.40BT are very comfortable with my glasses on. The signal separation is good and so is the imaging. I primarily use them to watch movies late night when my wife has gone to bed. She is not a fan of Bruce Lee. The clarity is great and I don't find myself distracted by poor sound quality. So far, the bass seems a little weak but I haven't played my heavy metal through them yet. Still, a great set of headphones at the usual excellent Crutchfield price! Can't say enough good things about Crutchfield, either. I've been a customer since 1992. They are my only choice when buying audio or television gear. Truly world-class service. That is worth so much more than anything else! I cannot say enough great words about this team of people! Thank you so very much! If you haven't been a Crutchfield customer before, please purchase with confidence. Talk to a staff member and experience the world class service for yourself!

Great headphones!

Jason from Duluth, MN on 5/9/2019

Have had these a week now and I'm loving them. They are very comfortable with my glasses. They connect to my Samsung tv quickly (my JBL Synchros take twice as long). The sound is great and I've not needed to recharge them yet.

Pros: Comfortable over glasses, quick pairing to tv, sounds great, great battery life so far! Purchased an opened box for quite a discount from Crutchfield!

Cons: I found it hard to pair with my tv at first. I had to find a YouTube video showing me how, but now that it's paired it pairs easily and quickly. When I turn it on or off the ladies voice sounds like she's saying "our on" or "our off." Other people have mentioned how small the buttons are for volume, etc and while they are surprisingly small I don't find it difficult to adjust the volume or power them on.

Mediocre build quality, ditto sound

Luke from Jackson, NJ on 5/5/2019

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Eh. Sound is okay. I'm a big Klipsch person and these is only my second Sennheiser purchase, and first Sennheiser wireless headphone purchase. Sound quality aside, battery life isn't great for me. Maybe 4 or 5 hours of light use. Bluetooth connectivity is alright, but finnicky to connect at times. Finally, there's a faulty wire in the left speaker cup which makes it scrape every time the left speaker cup is moved (it's supposed to move in toward the speakers head to better adjust), so now it rubs the wires. Wasn't paying attention to when I bought it and missed the return date. So now I'm hoping Crutchfield and/or Sennheiser do good on their warranty and send me a new product.

Pros: Sounds decent, but not for the money, bluetooth

Cons: poor battery life, mediocre sound, poor build quality

Comfort and Buttons

Luke from Lakewood, CO on 2/2/2019

A few minor downfalls. For my the priority is comfort. These are generally pretty good but press a little more than I'd like on the top of my head. he switch/button for play/next/prev trackis a little to easy to switch rather than press leading to accidentally skipping tracks. I like that it talks to you so you know if it's powered on and connected w/o having to check anyhting.

I have to say after reading all the reviews for these HP and others - they truly are incredible for the money. Not only is the sound outstanding but they are extremely simple to pair up and use. Work perfectly with my Sony 4k set. I even walked from the BR pairing to the kitchen about 50 feet away with a number of walls and did not lose one sound and no interference!

Decent Sound and Value

Bought these to replace corded JBL 510 Reference on-ear headset. I use them to wireless connect to my I pad. Comfort: These are fairly comfortable they cover my ear but do not surround them. As stated by others the head band could use more padding. Sound: These are not as crisp as the JBl's but are more bass oriented. The sound is pleasant but not studio quality. Bluetooth: I was able to walk around the main floor of my house and maintained connection, going to the basement still worked but started to breakup as distance from source increased, 30 plus feet. No problem setting up the connection but download the manual (Pdf.) from the website, I stored it on my computer. The pamphlet that comes in the box is useless. The upper model 4.50 has noise cancellation but I could not justify the additional money for my use. The Audio-Technica's which I found to be a little more comfortable and brighter cost more and are worth trying out if your budget allows.

These headphones are great! The sound is full, and even though they aren't noise-cancelling, it definitely limits the outside noise. It's also nice to have so much control on the headphones themselves (changing tracks, volume, picking up/answering phone calls, etc). The only issues I have had so far is that the bluetooth can be a little difficult when switching frequently between devices (like a phone and laptop). Also, there isn't an indicator to tell you when the headphones are on, so if you aren't careful you can drain the battery. All in all, would purchase again.

Lee from SE USA on 8/29/2017

Over all, these are good headphones, with clear, crisp sounds and good bass. A good bargain Out of the box, they were not as straight forward as one would expect headphones to be (Headphones should be simple and straight forward). Because they do not come charged, I had to use the audio cable in order to use them immediately. The 3.5mm audio cable is proprietary and requires a special twist maneuver to function properly. If not inserted correctly, they sound terrible. Once inserted and twisted, they are in snugly and resist being pulled out. The proprietary cable fitting is annoying, because cables do get frayed, cut, or lost over time, and need to be replaced. I plugged them into my laptop usb to charge. During charging, there is a clicking and buzzing in the headphones. This makes listening while charging unbearable. Once charged, the Bluetooth function works well. Audio is as good as when connected via cable. Sound is clear, bright, with good bass. The padding on the ear cups does a good job of blocking out external noise, and is comfortable for long periods. The ear cups may be on the small side, but I have small ears. So, there's that. When using as hands-free for phone calls, the sound is clear. As well, the microphone in the right headphone picks up voice/speech well in a quiet room. For the person on the other end of the line, the call is clear and easily understood. It does sound like the caller (the one using the headphones for the call) is in

Pros: Once fully operational, these headphones sound great, are light weight, and comfortable. A very good value

Cons: proprietary 3.5mm audio cable Clicking sound on the line when charging. So, it is not pleasant to use them for listening while also on charge.

Good sound, but can't control lower volumes

Overall sound quality was excellent for the price. Paired easily and every time I used them. Fit seemed a bit tight at first but I wore them all day at work comfortably. Earpads are on the small side compared to other brands I have tried. I bought these for use in an office environment and could not get the volume low enough for my tastes in Bluetooth mode. Wired worked great, but the point of these was wireless. I contacted Sennheiser directly and their customer service, while prompt, could not find a solution to the volume so I ended up returning them (which was painless...thanks Crutchfield). I ended up buying Bose headphones at almost twice the price and I feel the sound quality is not much, if any better. If you don't need to listen at low volumes, then I recommend these.

Comfortable but unexciting

I was looking for a comfy wireless headphones for mostly listening to online courses and occasional music listening. And its probably Ok for that. 4.40BT are VERY comfortable on ears and I can wear them for the whole day. Though I could not get the volume high enough to listen to the voice comfortably enough in a noisy rooms. On the music side, they can do bass, but the the rest of the stage is too dim and unexciting. I personalty prefer a bit brighter sound of URBANITE. The power button is a bit annoying as you have to press and hold it to power on/off. The rest of the controls is fine. And finally the plastic is so easy to scratch, even with careful handling you will get scratches all over the sides easily. I had to return them and stick with URBANITE despite their weight and not as good fit on ears.

Pros: Comfortable, battery life

Cons: Sound too dim, low volume, easy scratchable

Features

Overview: The Sennheiser HD 4.40BT over-ear wireless headphones are ideal for every day listening while you're on the go. With built-in Bluetooth, you can pair the headphones to your smart phone or tablet for wireless listening for hours. The headphones come with a USB charging cable, a straight audio cable, and a soft storage pouch.

Bluetooth: The HD 4.40BT headphones are compliant with the Bluetooth 4.0 standard, and are compatible with Bluetooth 1.1 through 4.0 devices with the following profiles: HFP (Hands-Free Profile), HSP (Headset Profile), AVRCP (Audio Video Remote Control Profile), and A2DP (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile). In addition, aptX audio coding provides high quality audio that is comparable to a wired connection. You can pair the headphones with most Apple and Android Bluetooth devices, including those with NFC (Near Field Communication).

Battery: The Bluetooth function is powered by a 3.7-volt 600mAh Lithium-Polymer rechargeable battery. The battery charges in approximately 2 hours using the supplied Micro USB charging cable. The battery life may also be displayed on the screen of your smartphone or device.

On-board Controls: The HD 4.40BTs have built-in controls on the right ear cup for power, volume, and music/phone call control. Music controls include play/pause, skip to next track, skip to previous track, fast forward, and fast reverse. Phone controls include accept/end a call, reject call, call on hold, and toggle between 2 calls. Established calls can be transferred from the headphones to the smartphone by turning off the Bluetooth connection. Using the Voice Control function of your phone, you can make a call by speaking a command.

Audio Cable: The included 58" audio cable lets you listen to your music when the battery is exhausted, or when you cannot, or choose not to, use Bluetooth. The cable terminates into a slender right-angled 3.5mm plug that is compatible with most smartphone cases. The cable does not have an in-line remote, and the on-board controls do not work when the power is off.

Q
Can be use with a PS4 gaming console?
[ Ricky  Dec 19, 2018 ]

A
I don't think so. It has no microphone or wire input. It is just a wireless, sound cancelling headset for listening.
[ david  Dec 19, 2018 ]
A
Sorry, I am not sure since I bought this for a friend overseas and not sure what he was using it for besides listening to music.
[ DARSHANI  Dec 19, 2018 ]
A
I am not sure as I only use my headphones for music and occasionally Bluetooth on my laptop. If your PS4 is Bluetooth compatible, I don't see why these headphones wouldn't work with the PS4.

Q
Just got these and they are beeping between songs. How do I stop this?
[ Summer  Nov 28, 2018 ]

A
I use my headphones for TV viewing more than music, but the only time I've experience random beeping, during play, was when the battery was getting low and charging was needed. A blue LED lite means fully charged.

There is no physical connection necessary with these headphones. They are designed to work with Bluetooth compatable devices; like TV's, cell phones, book readers, music players, ect. I purchased my headphones to use with my Samsung UHD TV. I can stream movies and use the headphone to listen to them without worrying about the sound disturbing otherst. Decide what device you want/need to use the headphones with, then make sure that that device is Bluetooth compatible.

Hold down the power button until the light keeps flashing blue (about 5 seconds)
