About the Sennheiser HD 560S

Jeff Miller

Smooth, spacious sound and a great value

Sennheiser has long-proved that great-sounding headphones don't have to cost an arm and a leg. These HD 560S open-back 'phones deliver accurate, well-balanced sound at a price that's more accessible than some high-end headphone choices. I've tried them and love them — some of the best imaging and separation I've heard, regardless of price.
Straight ahead view

The lightweight, well-padded Sennheiser HD 560S serves up detailed, accurate sound.

A sound legacy with a new twist

The sound signature is inspired by the premium HD 660 S headphones, but these 'phones bring their own distinct sonic characteristics to the table.

Sennheiser developed a brand-new dynamic driver for the HD 560S. They're tuned for clear, detailed sound that's smooth and natural across a wide frequency range. But where the HD 660 S delivers a more immediate soundstage, these headphones offer a larger, more spacious presentation.

Lightweight design with a snug, nicely padded fit

At just over eight ounces, these headphones are also smaller and lighter than some of the heavyweights you'll find in this audiophile class. They sport a snug, secure fit to keep the drivers properly aligned with your ears. But the headband and earcups have extra cushioning, including ear pads made of soft, velvety cloth.

Performs best when properly powered

Sennheiser HD 560S connected to iFi ZEN gear

I drove these headphones with a stack of iFi ZEN gear — my go-to DAC/amp combo.

Like with all high-performance headphones, the HD 560S will sound their best when connected to a separate headphone amp. If you're worried about an amp adding cost to your headphone setup, there are some nice bargains out there. And these headphones have two connection options: the detachable cable features a 3.5mm mini connector, and there's also a 1/4" adapter included.

I tested them with the compact, yet substantial iFi ZEN DAC and ZEN CAN combo that I use in my home setup. That stack of headphone amp/DAC powers the the HD 660 S 'phones nicely. It is just a natural fit. The versatile AudioQuest DragonFly plug-in USB DAC/amps offer some nice portable options.

Features

Overview: The Sennheiser HD 560S over-ear headphones feature a new 38mm driver with a specialized polymer blend diaphragm to give you clear, detailed sound, especially in the higher frequencies (above 10kHz). The open-back design gives the headphones a wide, natural soundstage. The HD 560s comes with a detachable 1.8-meter (59") cable with a 3.5mm plug, and a 1/4" plug adapter for listening to your home audio components.

Transducers: The HD 560S's 120-ohm drivers are made with strong magnets that deliver a solid bass response. The polymer-blend transducer membrane provides a truly linear excursion for the accurate reproduction of the high end. Sennheiser's E.A.R. (Ergonomic Acoustic Refinement) angled driver alignment is like sitting right in the sweet spot of your listening room.

Headphone Cable: The HD 560S comes with a detachable 59" cable terminated with a 3.5mm (1/8") plug for use with your digital audio player or portable devices. At the headphone connection, the cable has a 2.5mm sub-mini plug with a twist-lock to keep the cable from accidentally pulling out. The 1/8" (3.5mm) to 1/4" plug adapter screws onto the cable whenever you want to listen your home components or headphone amplifier.

Ear Cups: The over-ear headphones sport ultra-comfortable velour covered ear pads that softly surround your ear. The ear cups are ventilated to keep your ears cool, even during long listening sessions.

Q
Are they noise cancelling?
[ Sheila  Sep 07, 2021 ]
4 answers
A
They are not. Great headphones for the price.
[ JOEL  Sep 07, 2021 ]
A
No they are not. But they do sound nice!
[ JOHN  Sep 07, 2021 ]
A
No, they're open back headphones. If you're looking for noise cancelling a good start would be to look at closed back headphone such as the Sony WH-1000XM3.
[ DILLON  Sep 07, 2021 ]
A
Nope, they are open back headphones, which means that not only are they not noise cancelling, they have no noise isolation either. These work best in a quiet space, and people around you will be able to hear what you are playing.
[ MATTHEW  Sep 07, 2021 ]
Q
According to Crutchfield's Details page, these headphones have an impedance number (120 ohm) nearly double what is considered acceptable (64 ohm). Why isn't this a problem?
[ TIM  Jun 16, 2021 ]
2 answers
A
Higher impedance cans aren't a problem as long as you have amplification. Not sure where you came up with an "acceptable" number as the impedance is whatever it is on a pair of headphones. My Drop 6xx are 300 Ohms and sound great with a Topping A50s amp. Don't worry about that number, I have a pair of 560's and they sound quite nice!
[ JOHN  Jun 16, 2021 ]
A
All I know is they sound great with my Bose Wave radio.
[ GRANT  Jun 16, 2021 ]
Q
Are there any shorter after-market replacement cables compatible with the HD560s?
[ ROBERT S  Jan 28, 2021 ]
2 answers
A
not easy to find, please let me know if you find a shorter cable -3.5 input
[ MICHAEL  Jan 28, 2021 ]
A
I have not checked. I would think that there are.
[ ROHIT  Jan 28, 2021 ]
Q
Have you used a headphone amp with the HD560s. If so, does it improve the quality of sound?
[ KENNETH  Nov 26, 2020 ]
2 answers
A
Yes, I would recommend using an AMP when using these, there is a obvious sound quality difference compared to plugging it straight into your computer.
[ EDDIE BHOY KAME  Nov 26, 2020 ]
A
Currently I only have a Fiio A3 portable headphone amp I use, which is passable but not ideal. At 120 ohm impedance, you should be using some type of amplification for optimal performance. I plan on buying either a Schiit Magnius/ Asgard or Topping A50/A90 to match these headphones.
