The sound is undeniably the best I've ever heard from a pair of phones. Obvious quality feel and awesome looking. If you want the absolute best sound they're great. But if portability or cost is a concern you might look at other options. These phones as with most at this level have capabilities far beyond human hearing.
Pros: Unequaled performance, indulgent, noticeable.
Cons: Bulky, expensive.

I compared the HD 820 to my old Audioquest original Night Hawk headphones. Both were fed by the HDV 820 amplifier. The HD 820 had a balanced connection. The Nit Hawk had a 1/4 inch stero connection. The HD 820 sounded the best by a large margin. The HD 820's were Quieter, more open, and so clear. The fit over my large ears was also more comfortable than the Night Hawk's. I also was wearing glasses and the glasses did not seem to bother the sound. The HD 820 come in a nice hard box with several headphone cables making it easy to connect to almost everything. The cables are professional and good quality.
Pros: good sound for me and a comfortable fit. The cables provided were better and more versatile than expected.

Not anywhere near close to Worth the money. They're great, but more like $300 great. Do some research and find a better price to value ratio

Wow, yes they are that good. Pricey but if you can swing it well worth the cost. Especially when purchased on sale.

I ordered these from Crutchfield as soon as they were in stock, and after an extended period of daily use, I can now say I really love and enjoy these headphones. The bring a solid and detailed soundstage to all genres of music I have tried the with. From jazz, rock, pop and classical, these cans bring the spaciousness Sennheiser headphones are known for, but with added bass and slam that really brings the music home. I also own the Sennheiser 800S, and going back and forth between the two, I prefer the 820 on most of the music I own, but I would never part with the 800S either, both are superb. I'm driving these cans with the Sennheiser HDV820 headphone amp, which was designed to match both the 800S and the HD820. The system is a sonic match made from heaven!
Pros: Superb, wide soundstage, loads of acoustic detail and deep bass response.
