Our take on the Sennheiser PXC 480

Sennheiser's “PXC” series noise-canceling headphones are designed specifically for air travel, and I've found they work well anywhere you need some peace and quiet. The Sennheiser PXC 480 headphones are the wired version in the lineup. They offer a relaxed, comfortable fit and clear, detailed sound. And they use special circuitry to automatically adjust the level of noise cancellation to your surrounding environment, whether it's on a plane or in an office. Basically, they feature much of what I loved when I reviewed the PXC 550 Wireless version — at a lower cost.

Comfortable and adaptive travel headphones

Sennheiser's “PXC” series noise-canceling headphones are designed specifically for air travel, and I've found they work well anywhere you need some peace and quiet. Basically, they feature much of what I loved when I reviewed the PXC 550 Wireless version — at a lower cost.

And while the PXC 480 headphones do not have Bluetooth®, the extended battery life is a fair trade-off. You get up to 50 hours of noise cancellation on a single charge. That should get you through a few round trips!

Pleasant, laid-back sound that you can customize

While I haven't heard the PXC 480 headphones yet, Sennheiser claims the sound signature is very close to the '550s — relaxed, with a slight emphasis on the bass. It makes a great match for the ear-hugging, super-soft feel of these 'phones.

But if you'd like to tweak what you're hearing a bit, you're in luck. Download the free Sennheiser Captune app to your Apple® or Android™ device, and you can manually control both the sound profile and level of noise cancellation. I've used this app before, and it works well. You go through a series of different sound curves, and pick your preferences. At the end of the process, you have a customized sound preset that you can name, save, and later select at the tap of a button.

Handy controls and neat "Talk Through" feature

The Sennheiser PXC 480 headphones include a detachable cable with an in-line one-button remote. It lets you control music and phone calls while you're on the go. A switch on the right ear cup toggles noise cancellation on and off, and also activates the "Talk Through" feature. Tiny mics pick up external sound — so you can clearly and quickly hear others when they need to talk to you.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I just tried out my new headphones and so far, they're wonderful! Superior noise cancelling. Sound quality excellent enough for me to hear every word of every song I've played so far. One reviewer I read before purchasing thought the bass was weak, but I'm not finding that at all. I feel I'm getting a rich, full sound, just the way I like it.

Pros: Great sound!

Cons: 1. The quick start guide that came in the box doesn't say anything about how to turn the headphones off. 2. if used for the intended purpose of these headphones (in-flight), I'm guessing they will last a good, long time. However, I am using them while I exercise, since I can't use earbuds, and I wanted rechargeable, wired headphones with some noise canceling ability. Hard to find nowadays! Looking at the construction, I think it's very possible I'll wear these out rather quickly.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great Sounding headphones, Took them on a flight the other week and the noise blocking is supreme! Could not hear the plane engines and having the ability to "pause" the noise blocking to be able to listen to the flight attendants really worked out well. Highly recommended

Pros: great sound, battery life

Cons: could use a bit more on the low end

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great sound and very comfortable considering I wear them while at work and when I travel for work so they sit on my head quite a bit. Also the noise reduction works quite well when sitting on a plane. Service was great to as I told Jane what I was looking for and how I would be using the headphones. After two weeks couldn't be more pleased.

Pros: Great sound....very comfortable

Cons: After two weeks, nothing yet

NO aaa batteries and GREAT sound!!!!...thanks Crutchfield!!

Product Research

Overview: The Sennheiser PXC 480 over-ear headphones are ideal for traveling, offering high-fidelity sound and NoiseGard active noise cancellation. The headphones are lightweight with specially-shaped ear pads for hours of comfortable listening. The headphones come with a USB charging cable, a straight audio cable with in-line remote/microphone, and 1/4" and airline adapters. The ear cups collapse and swivel for storage in the included soft zippered travel case.

NoiseGard: The PXC 480s feature Sennheiser's proprietary NoiseGard Hybrid active noise cancelling which shuts out the noisiest environments, creating your own quiet space. NoiseGard can be used while listening to music, or cable-free when you just want to shut out a totally quiet experience. Two microphones on the outside of the ear cups work as a feed-forward active noise cancellation system to reduce high-frequency noise, while two microphones inside the ear cups act as a feed-back active noise cancellation system to reduce noise in the low-frequency band. The multi-function switch on the right ear cup lets you turn NoiseGard ANC on or off. Pushing the switch past the "On" position turns on the TalkThrough feature, which temporarily turns off NoiseGard and pauses the music to let you carry on a conversation or listen to an announcement without removing the headphones.

Battery: The NoiseGard function is powered by a rechargeable battery. The battery charges in approximately 3 hours via USB using the supplied USB charging cable. A full charge supplies enough power for 50 hours of listening with NoiseGard on. The battery level can be monitored through a 5-LED meter on the headphone.

Audio Cable: The included 56" audio cable lets you listen to your music, with or without NoiseGard (active or passive). An in-line 1-button remote/microphone allows you to play/pause your music, skip to the next or previous track, and make/accept/end calls. The cable terminates into a slender right-angled 3.5mm plug that is compatible with most smartphone cases. Two plug adapters are included: a 1/4" adapter for listening to your home audio components, and an airline adapter for listening to in-flight entertainment while traveling.

Q & A

Customer Q&A

Crutchfield asked
Why did you buy this?

To replace a PXC 350 I bought 8 years ago from you. I have Bose, Beats, etc. but this is the one I always grab because it's the best, IMHO. [ M  Mar 16, 2017 ]
Wired noise cancelling headphones with great reviews :) [ Paul  Mar 06, 2017 ]
1/4 adapter included, satisfied with products I've purchased from the brand in the past [ Everett  Feb 17, 2017 ]
Two reasons why I chose this product. I love Sennheiser brand headphones, I'm replacing a pair I currently own, and I was impressed by the one review I read on the product. Lastly, I have never purchased from a company that gave such amazing customer service on their products. They truly love their customers. [ L  Feb 08, 2017 ]

2 questions already asked

I wear glasses and I don't recall it ever hurting. The earphones rest lightly enough on the ear for me. [ Lauretta  Nov 12, 2018 ]
I to wear glasses and its never been a problem wear these headphones [ David  Nov 12, 2018 ]
No pain or discomfort from eyeglasses. These are some pretty comfy cans. I have very large ears, and if I wear them for a long coast to coast flight I start to get a little irritated but nothing to do with eyeglasses, just my dumbo sized ears. Overall I'm pretty happy. They sound good while running active during flights and do a decent job at NR. if not in a noisy environment you can leave the NR turned off and the sound is much better. [ JEFFREY  Nov 12, 2018 ]
You can't have glasses underneath the headphone ear cups, because then they won't seal around your ear and the noise cancellation won't work. Same goes for other over-the-ear noise-cancelling headphones. Instead, I just rest the arms of my glasses on the top of the ear cups, although I have to be careful when looking down or else the glasses will fall to the floor. BTW, I have tried both the Sennheiser and Bose QuietComfort 25, and I highly recommend the Bose over Sennheiser both for comfort and better noise cancellation. [ Anthony  Nov 12, 2018 ]
I'm afraid there's not enough information on the Sennheiser PXC 480 headphones to answer that question definitively. Your best bet to find out would be to contact Sennheiser's support directly--you can reach them by phone at 860-434-9190 or email [ Larry  Apr 25, 2017 ]  Staff
