Overview

Our take on the Sennheiser RS 165

If you need to hear your TV more clearly without having the whole neighborhood hear it, then check out the Sennheiser RS 165 headphone system. Connect the included wireless transmitter to your TV's headphone jack or audio output, put the headphones on, and you can listen comfortably while no one else is bothered. They're great for late-night TV in the bedroom, so you won't disturb your spouse. Or use them in the rec room so you can better hear the TV while walking on the treadmill. Folks who are hard of hearing can use them to better follow the dialogue in their movies and TV shows, too.

The RS 165 includes a comfortable pair of over-the-ear headphones and a wireless transmitter that delivers high-quality audio.

Bring your TV's sound closer

If you need to hear your TV more clearly without having the whole neighborhood hear it, then check out the Sennheiser RS 165 headphone system. Connect the included wireless transmitter to your TV's headphone jack or audio output, put the headphones on, and you can listen comfortably while no one else is bothered. Folks who are hard of hearing can use them to better follow the dialogue in their movies and TV shows, too.

Plush padding and earcup volume buttons

Comfort is important when choosing any headphones. The RS 165's headset features thick padding on the headband and earcups, so you can enjoy its crystal-clear sound for long periods. If you need to adjust the volume, don't worry — you won't need to get up or mess with the TV remote. There are built-in volume buttons on the right earcup. There's also a bass boost button if you want a little more low-frequency power.

Rechargeable headset batteries offer hours of listening

The headset and transmitter are paired at the factory, so there's no need to do it yourself. The headphones are powered by "AAA" rechargeable batteries (included). With the batteries inserted, just hang the headphones atop the transmitter and charging will automatically begin. You'll get up to 18 hours of use with a full charge. What about wireless range? If you have a room that's longer than 98 feet long... wow, that's impressive! If not, you'll have more than enough range to use these headphones in your TV room.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So far the headphones are working well. I did have a bit of a problem in hooking up to my Marantz NR1407 receiver as it did not have audio out capability. Contacted Crutch and was told the PREOUT jacks would work. But this didn't. I am now using the headphone jack and working well with one small exception. I encounter a slight hum when in use. Not enough of a problem for me to return the product though.

Pros: Good headphone feel. Overall sound is good.

Cons: Slight background hum. Connection setup.

Great quality

Unbelievable sound

Steve from Knoxville, TN on 7/26/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Unbelievable!! These replaced a pair of Sony MDR-985 RF that were destroyed by a lightning strike next door. Neither my wife nor I can hear TVs because of out age. These are far superior to those. The volume and base adjustments can easily be made while wearing them. They block almost all outside noise. Great sound and extremely comfortable. I'll keep listening to the advise of the Crutchfield folks.

Pros: Range is great. These hold the charge longer than my old Sonys. Better sound. Simple to adjust. Extremely comfortable.

Cons: With my Sonys, we could use both sets of the earphones with one transmitter. These earphones are dedicated to each transmitter. I'm still learning. They block out so much noise, that I have to wave to my wife to get her attention- maybe a pro. I had to buy some cheap adapters to connect to my Direct TV-

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great product, works great, easy to set up. Only negative is the phono input. You're pretty limited with that. I worked around that by using an audio/video switch and a RCA to phono cable. Then I was able to RCA cables from components. I also ran digital optical out and through a decoder to the switch. Tech support was great in answering all my questions while setting it all up. Bottom line is that now I can listen to sat tv, movies ,whatever and it all sounds great. These are a HUGE step up from cheap Bluetooth headphones. Much, much better sound quality. I'm hearing things I never picked up on before. Thanks Crutchfield.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am enjoying the use of my headphones. They work great. The reason I did not give a five-star rating is because they ar really large. I am 5 ft. And 103 lbs. I bought them to watch the Hallmark channel and enjoy the movies so much more now that I can hear and understand the dialogue with a few people speaking. Thank you for your wonderful service.??

Pros: Works great

Cons: Too large

Sennheiser RS 165 wireless headphones

Crutchfield customer from Newington, CT on 6/5/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My reasons for buying these may be very different than others. I initially bought them to listen to TV at a different volume than the TV. Now, that said, as I used them more, the sound quality is very good as well. Now I am 67 so I'm out of touch with headphones and most of today's electronics. So, now I use them to listen to music programs on the TV and I'm very happy with the sound and the easy functions though I do wish the volume controls were not on the ears and I'd like to see a separate remote that I can hold in my hand and adjust. But I do recommed them.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Works perfectly - just as advertised! (a rarity in this day for sure). These were recommended by Crutchfield staff as a good product to meet my needs. I needed a wireless headphone set with it's own volume control separate from the TV's built-in volume. Long-life rechargeable at the base. Couldn't be easier! :)

Pros: Easy setup, great sound, long battery life, easily rechargeable, minimal cable mess, great clarity and range.

Cons: none

Dissatisfied

Thomas from Huntsville, AL on 2/18/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm not very satisfied. First I have not found a way to connect both L&R ears. I have different type wires on my TV. Second, when I turn the unit I have to wait up to 30 seconds for them to come on. Third, while listening to my one side it will cut out ocassionly. Usually at a key part of the program. Very disappointing.

Pros: Comfortable to wear.

Cons:

Guest from Charlottesville, VA on 2/14/2017

I think this is a great product. Very good sound. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because I have a sensitive head and sometimes it feels like too much pressure against my ears. But I am glad I have it as I can listen to the TV and not bother the kids.

Great headset

Chris from Cincinnati on 1/23/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I use these not to disturb my wife or to drown out background noise while I watch tv.. the range is less than my old 30.00 RCA headset (not by much). However sound quality is night and day. The comfort of the headset compared to the RCA ones is also night and day. Love the bass boost. Watching a good movie bass boost on and totally different experience, or turn it off to hear the announcers in the for front of the sound.. Have used them 3 days no charging and still functions properly. You do have to charge 16 to 24 hours first charge..

Pros: Great sound, comfortable, bass boost

Cons:

Sennheiser RS 165

Jerry from Harrisburg, PA on 1/4/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Everything I was hoping they would be. I am 72 and having difficulty hearing a lot of the audio when watching movies. With low audio and high background noise I struggled to follow the storyline. With the RS165 headphones I don't miss any of the audio, they sure worked for me. My wife tried them and I had to order her a set.

Pros: Made watching movies great again.

Cons:

Great sound and ease of use.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought these for the wife. She is losing her hearing and the tv is so loud...WOW peace and quiet once again. These Sennheiser's are the best quality. We hooked them up and let them charge overnight. I tested them the next day and the sound is awesome. I might buy another pair for me.

Pros: Charging cradle and headphones are easy to use and provide awesome sound quality.

Cons: None

These had great sound, but they really "pinched" my head. You may have different experience. I do wear glasses, and they caused the eyeglass pads to dig into my nose. I do not have the same problem with the Bose QC headsets.

Pros: Great sound

Cons: Uncomfortable for me and my spouse

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Sound quality is good. On button on the headphone is very small, requires careful pushing to turn on.Buttons on the transmit unit respond slowly. Directions for use are poor. Labelling to obtain extra cables are nonexistent, requiring knowledge and looking at photos with care and comparing to photos on internet to order .

Pros: Reasonably comfortable. Good volume control.

Cons: Weak directions. Transmit range about 20 feet. Microwave oven interferes when on.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had an RS160 for years and one ear pad broke (my fault) I ordered the RS165 and hope to get as many years out of it. My wife uses a RS160 still and they have both been trouble free. I like the sound a little higher than her so it works well all around. We have two TV's and I watch one and she watches the other due to our likes and dislikes on programing..

Pros: Easy to use, easy to charge, sound quality very good.

Cons: None

Very happy with purchase. Had an older pair of Sennheiser that sat on the ears. They were good but just got tired. Was advised to try this model, and was very happy I did. I don't like to buy something only to have to return it because it wasn't what I had expected. Thanks for the advice.

Pros: overall great performance and comfortable fit

Cons: none as of yet

Features

Overview: The Sennheiser RS 165 Digital Wireless headphone system consists of a pair of wireless headphones (HDR 165) and a radio frequency (RF) transmitter (TR 165). The system is designed to enhance the sound of your TV or your home audio source, and to give you the freedom to walk around your home with the headphones on.

Wireless Headphones: The HDR 165's wireless headphones feature a circum-aural (around-the-ear), closed design to significantly reduce background noise. The soft-padded ear cups and headband provide hours of listening comfort. The headphones have controls on the right ear cup: power on/off, volume up, volume down, and bass (to activate the Dynamic Bass Boost feature). With the batteries installed, the HDR 165 headphones weigh approximately 10.5 ounces.

TR 165 Transmitter: The transmitter connects to your television's or audio system's audio output via the included 3.5mm cable. The audio is transmitted on the 2.4 GHz band (2.40 to 2.48 GHz) with 8-FSK Digital modulation. The transmitter can send signals to up to 2 pairs of headphones at the same time. Transmission range is approximately 98 feet (30 meters) without obstructions. (Typical performance with obstructions will be somewhat less.) The transmitter is powered by a 9-volt DC power supply/AC adapter. Adapter plugs for the US, Europe, UK, and Australia are provided, allowing for use in other countries. The transmitter doubles as a convenient charging cradle for the headphones. Transmitter dimensions: 4.96"W x 9.264"H x 3.96" D.

Rechargeable Batteries: The headphones are powered by the two included "AAA" rechargeable NiMH batteries (1.2V, 820mAh). The batteries fully charge in approximately 8.5 hours, when placed on the top of the transmitter. Battery life is approximately 18 hours of use. Standard, non-rechargeable "AAA" batteries may be used in the headphones, but the headphones must not be placed on the charging cradle.

Auto Power Off: If there is no signal from the transmitter for more than 5 minutes, the headphones automatically switch to standby mode. If the headphones are outside the transmission range or switched to off for more than 5 minutes, the transmitter automatically switches to standby mode.

Dynamic Bass Boost: The RS 165's Dynamic Bass Boost feature raises the intensity of the bass when activated. You can turn the Bass Boost on or off by pressing the Bass button on the transmitter, or on the headphones.

Specifications:

  • Frequency Response: 18Hz - 21kHz
  • Maximum Sound Pressure Level: 106dB at 1kHz, 3% THD
  • Total Harmonic Distortion: <0.5% at 1 kHz, 100dB SPL
  • Transmission Range: Up to 30m (98'), line of sight

I purchased the RS 165 for husband and he loved it. It enabled him to hear without blowing me out of the room. [ Kimberly  Oct 10, 2018 ]
The RS 165 headphones are a good sounding and adjustible headphone set. Hope this will help. [ MICHAEL  Oct 10, 2018 ]
Yes! You can use the headphones at your desired volume level and she can get her sound from tv at her volume level, headphone volume is controlled independently. [ DEBBIE  Jun 07, 2017 ]
Yes. You can. You need to connect the headphone base unit to the TV audio output. The base unit will then trasmit the sound to the headphone. Mine works great! The Sennheiser headphone also has its own voice level control. [ Lee  Jun 07, 2017 ]
If you plug your wireless headphones in using an RCA adapter instead of a headphone jack, then sound should go to the headphones as well as through the normal speakers. You should be able to get a headphone jack to RCA conversion adapter, but that may add more noise then getting a single adapter that goes from headphone base to RCA port. [ Andrew  Jun 07, 2017 ]
