The RS 175 includes a comfortable pair of over-the-ear headphones and a wireless transmitter with a choice of virtual surround sound modes and dynamic bass boost.

Hear the squeaking shoes of late night hoops while the rest of the house sleeps. Enjoy an explosion-heavy action flick without getting phone calls from neighbors. The Sennheiser RS 175 headphone system puts you in the middle of the on-screen action with a choice of two virtual surround sound modes. Connect the included wireless transmitter to your TV or receiver's optical digital or analog output, put the headphones on, and listen to your show, movie, or game. No one else needs to hear a thing.

Listening to music is enjoyable, too. Move around your room freely while your tunes play. If you need a little more oomph, a dynamic bass boost button lets you add some low-frequency power.

Huge wireless range and rechargeable headset batteries

Need to run to the fridge, and don't want to miss important play-by-play or dialogue? Sennheiser's wireless link technology gives you a listening range of up to 328 feet. The headset and transmitter are paired at the factory, so there's no need to do it yourself. The headphones are powered by "AAA" rechargeable batteries (included). With the batteries inserted, just hang the headphones atop the transmitter and charging will automatically begin. You'll get up to 18 hours of use with a full charge.

Plush padding and earcup buttons for easy control

Comfort is important when choosing any headphones, especially if you use them to watch an entire movie or show. The RS 175's headset features thick padding on the headband and earcups, so you can enjoy its crystal-clear sound for long periods. If you need to adjust the volume, don't worry — you won't need to get up or mess with the TV remote. There are built-in volume buttons on the right earcup. That's where you'll also find buttons to toggle between surround sound modes and the dynamic bass boost.

Get an extra headset so you and someone else enjoy the same show.

Product Research

Features

Overview: The Sennheiser RS 175 Digital Wireless headphone system consists of a pair of wireless headphones (HDR 175) and a radio frequency (RF) transmitter (TR 175). The system is designed to enhance the sound of your TV or your home audio source, and to give you the freedom to walk around your home with the headphones on.

Wireless Headphones: The HDR 175's wireless headphones feature a circum-aural (around-the-ear), closed design to significantly reduce background noise. The soft-padded ear cups and headband provide hours of listening comfort. The headphones have controls on the right ear cup: power on/off, volume up, volume down, surround (to activate Virtual Surround Sound), and bass (to activate the Dynamic Bass Boost feature). With the batteries installed, the HDR 175 headphones weigh approximately 10.9 ounces.

TR 175 Transmitter: The transmitter connects to your television's or audio system's audio output via the included 3.5mm cable or optical digital cable (accepts 2ch PCM audio only). You can switch between the two inputs with a provided toggle switch. The audio is transmitted on the 2.4 GHz band (2.40 to 2.48 GHz) with 8-FSK Digital modulation. The transmitter can send signals to up to 2 pairs of headphones at the same time. The extended transmission range is approximately 328 feet (100 meters) without obstructions. (Typical performance with obstructions will be somewhat less.) The transmitter is powered by a 9-volt DC power supply/AC adapter. Adapter plugs for the US, Europe, UK, and Australia are provided, allowing for use in other countries. The transmitter doubles as a convenient charging cradle for the headphones. Transmitter dimensions: 4.96"W x 9.264"H x 3.96"D.

Rechargeable Batteries: The headphones are powered by the two included "AAA" rechargeable NiMH batteries (1.2V, 820mAh). The batteries fully charge in approximately 8.5 hours, when placed on the top of the transmitter. Battery life is approximately 18 hours of use. Standard, non-rechargeable "AAA" batteries may be used in the headphones, but the headphones must not be placed on the charging cradle.

Auto Power Off: If there is no signal from the transmitter for more than 5 minutes, the headphones automatically switch to standby mode. If the headphones are outside the transmission range or switched to off for more than 5 minutes, the transmitter automatically switches to standby mode.

Dynamic Bass Boost: The RS 175's Dynamic Bass Boost feature raises the intensity of the bass when activated. You can turn the Bass Boost on or off by pressing the Bass button on the transmitter, or on the headphones.

Virtual Surround Sound: The headphone system offers two virtual surround sound modes (Hi/Lo) that simulate the presence of external speakers. Special signal processing produces a spatial sound quality, with differences in intensity between the Hi and Lo modes. You can engage Virtual Surround Sound from the transmitter or the headphones.

Specifications:

  • Frequency Response: 17Hz - 22kHz
  • Maximum Sound Pressure Level: 114dB at 1kHz, 3% THD
  • Total Harmonic Distortion: <0.5% at 1 kHz, 100dB SPL
  • Transmission Range: Up to 100m (328')

Q
Can someone who has no hearing deficit still hear the TV?

A
YEs, my wife does when I use my head set.
[ douglas  May 11, 2019 ]
A
Not if you turn the volume down low enough on the TV. My wife does not like the TV lou and normally keeps the sound bar at 6 or 7. When I use the headphones, I turn the sound bar down to 4, and I cannot hear the TV with the headphones off my ears. Hope this is helpful. They have solved a problem for us.
[ WILLIAM  May 11, 2019 ]
A
Yes, absolutely; this unit has great volume control for TV and you can also plug your music device into for incredible sounding music no matter how your hearing is. Enjoy!
[ BILL  May 11, 2019 ]
A
Yes that should not be a problem
[ Ron  May 11, 2019 ]

I have hearing deficit and this Sennheiser rs 175 helps me
[ GEORGE  May 10, 2019 ]
A
I bought these because I could not hear the monologue of the actors very well, even with the volume up pretty high and I have no hearing problems but after getting these it made all the difference. Now I hear everything they say and things I did not know I was missing before, subtle sounds I don't think I would have heard even with the volume high, have not regretted up which at a point the sound becomes distorted, have not regretted at any time purchasing these. They also cut out any ambient noise that may be overriding what I am trying to listen to

We use Duracell AAA rechargeables w/ green body. They hold a charge that lasts long time, as does battery itself.
[ Donald  Mar 28, 2019 ]
A
It takes batteries? Lol. Not sure. Have not needed to change as they must be rechargeable and haven't gone bad.

Q
how does it tune to a correct frequency?
[ sharon  Feb 26, 2019 ]

A
Simply place the RS 175 headphones on the base charging station & they will automatically pair with the base station transmission frequency. You can pair up to two headphones with one base station. See also the Sennheiser website, search for RS 175, and download the user manual. Good luck, JW

On the back of the unit there is an input jack . An output cord on the TV back is connected to the headphone charging unit. The output jack on the TV is marked AUDIO OUT. The volume out is constant and the audio on the TV audio can be turned off or set very low. so other people won't be bothered. The volume can be adjusted on the wireless headphone unit. Whatever you are watching on TV, the sound you automatically hear only on the wireless headphones. This is a great unit. I use them a lot when my wife doesn't want to watch TV or listen.
[ ROGER L  Feb 28, 2019 ]

I hooked my to my TV through the audio cable or 3.5mm jack. When you turn the headset on and the rest is automatic. You can turn both the headset and the base unit on and off from the headset. The 2 top buttons on the headset control the type of sound you receive and the 2 bottom buttons control the volume. I've had mine for almost 3 years and find them to be the best money I've spent for a product of this nature. Absolutely wonderful set-up.
[ BILL  Feb 26, 2019 ]
A
Not sure what the question is. The base unit transmits the signal wirelessly to the headphones. The base unit gets its signal from a wired connection to your tv. Either vis the headphone output jack or the tv s optical output connection.
[ Coppy  Feb 26, 2019 ]
A
I don't know. I have an optical connection directly to my Samsung TV and it works. Sorry, but that is all I know.

Q
are the headsets noise canceling? (rs175 model)
[ ronald  Feb 19, 2018 ]
4 answers
A
The headphones are great, I don't wake my wife when I can't sleep. As far as noise canel, I have no idea.
[ Steve  Feb 19, 2018 ]
A
Honestly, i do not know. I have tinnitus ( ringing ears 24/7) , sorry ! But they are great for the price !
[ MICHAEL  Feb 19, 2018 ]
A
Not completely...you can hear a noise if it occurs, provided the volume is low enough. The louder the volume the less you will hear of any noise around you. But you will be able to hear for instance a shout for help or a glass breaking or a door slamming in the next room etc....the things I would want to hear!
[ David E.  Feb 19, 2018 ]
A
No. The ear cups seal out noise fairly well but they are not noise cancelling.

Q
What cables do I need to purchase for the device to work?
[ jaimie  Feb 12, 2018 ]
5 answers
A
Hi Jaimie. All you need is a digital optical audio cable, and you are good to go.
[ DAN  Feb 12, 2018 ]
A
I did not need to purchase additional cables to install my RS 175. I used only what the manufacturer supplied.
[ Brian  Feb 12, 2018 ]
A
A new in the box unit comes with the cables necessary for the device to work. Check the "Whats in the Box" section of the product description page in case you might need longer cables than are supplied with the unit.
[ TOMMY  Feb 12, 2018 ]
A
None I'm aware of. Just plug in with what's in the box.
[ Harlan  Feb 12, 2018 ]
A
Hi Jaimie, I purchased this product for my mother and the setup couldn't have been easier. I used the included fiber optic cable and made the connection from the optical digital audio out connector on the tv to the base station of the RS 175. The headphone connection to the base station is wireless. Hope this helps.
[ John  Feb 12, 2018 ]
Q
Can I connect to my phone for music via bluetooth?
[ Michael  Nov 04, 2017 ]
1 answer
A
It is a wired connection only, not Bluetooth. The wireless connection is just between the base unit and the headphones, but the base must be connected to the audio source by a wire.

Q
Can the transmitter be connected to a Roku media streaming device using the optical cable instead of the TV?
[ Doug  Jul 28, 2017 ]
2 answers
A
Hi Doug. I have the optical cable going to my tv, and the Roku video going through my av receiver (along with Directv and Blu-ray player) Then I can set my receiver to HDMI 2 for regular listening, or HDMI1 for the Sennheiser RS 175. The sound through the headphones is incredible! Highly recommend the RS 175!!!!
[ DAN  Jul 28, 2017 ]
A
If the Roku has an optical out, I would think that it would work. I have connected the optical connection to several devices and it has worked well. Based upon my non-professional opinion, I think it will work.
[ Lee  Jul 28, 2017 ]
Q
what are the cababilities of connecting to multiple tv's?
[ Mark  Jun 29, 2017 ]
2 answers
A
The transmitter requires a wired connection and can only be connected to one TV at a time. The headphones are wirelessly connected to the transmitter. More than one set of headphones can be paired with a single transmitter. Hope this helps!
[ Maya  Jun 30, 2017 ]
A
I am definitely no techie, but I don't believe a single unit can attach to multiple TVs unless you have each hookup with the same blue tooth capability on the back of each tv. Would suggest you ask Crutchfield rep. I have always found them very knowledgeable
[ JAMES W  Jun 30, 2017 ]
Q
Does the digital in cable actually make the headphones sound better when listening to music over the analog cable? I can see how it could make a difference because the RF signal is digital too so there is one less conversion from analog to digital. But since the input digital signal has to be converted to a different signal in transmission, I figure it may not make a difference anyway.
[ Spencer  Feb 28, 2015 ]
1 answer
A
I just use the digital optical cable. It is run directly into my TV (a recent Samsung model). In fact I chose these headphones specifically because they offer this connection option. The audio quality is excellent. When playing Blu-Ray or DVDs through this TV with audio then run to the headphones, there is really no need to switch to either of the simulated surround settings accessible from the headset mounted buttons. For that matter, the Bass boost is also unnecessary when viewing movies and would really be far too excessive. I think there would be very little noticeable loss or difference when playing music through the analog cables. These are still a perfectly acceptable norm for connection to many home theater and of course audio-alone sound systems. I found that the volume level of these headphones (which can be quickly adjusted by the +/- buttons on the right ear cup) is surprisingly strong. I'd read reviews complaining about the weak volume level of some other wireless headphone brands with similar style ear cups and similarly intended for Home Theater use. If you plan to use these headphones exclusively for music, you might be well satisfied with other styles (in-ear and on-ear) which are not only lighter weight and often cheaper but can be great for reproducing 2-channel stereo sound. Many offer Bluetooth connection (these do not) which may be useful if you also plan to run music through an ipod, tablet or other portable music systems. One last comment regarding the range of these. I live in an apartment, but even when blocked by several interior walls the RF sound signal remains strong and does not break up. I have even worn these down stairs and 100 feet away from the transmitter and was surprised to notice the sound did not drop off with the signal even passing through exterior walls.

Q
Is this product compatible with my Samsung HD Plasma Smart TV?
[ Robert  Feb 21, 2015 ]
2 answers
A
There is only one cable that attaches to the TV. So long as one has a digital audio outlet, it may be labeled as optical, then this product will work on that TV. It is very easy to install and works great.
[ Matthew  Feb 25, 2015 ]
A
It should work with any TV . It has the option of connecting to the analog or digital optical audio outputs on your TV. It has excellent sound quality.
