Overview

Our take on the Sennheiser RS 5000

You'd be surprised how often we hear it. Calls and emails from our customers that start with “My <insert family member here> has to play the TV so loud, I can hear it in the other room.” The Sennheiser RS 5000 wireless headphone system solves exactly that problem. You hear your shows, movies, and music clearly through a pair of personal wireless in-ear headphones — sparing others in your household from the loud volumes.

The cure for a common TV sound problem

You'd be surprised how often we hear it. Calls and emails from our customers that start with “My <insert family member here> has to play the TV so loud, I can hear it in the other room.” The Sennheiser RS 5000 wireless headphone system solves exactly that problem. Sennheiser RS 5000 headset and transmitter

The Sennheiser RS 5000's transmitter connects to your TV and sends audio wirelessly to the headset

How it works, and what's included

Use one of the included cables to connect the RS 5000's transmitter to your TV or audio system. The transmitter sends an audio signal wirelessly to the included headset. This lightweight headset fits around your neck lanyard-style, and features a pair of comfortable earbuds.

Now you can watch TV late at night, and even turn it up loud without disturbing others. Control the volume with two thumb-sized buttons found on the center of the headset. A full charge of the headset gives you up to 12 hours of wireless use.

Makes speech easier to understand

Another top customer complaint about TV sound? Dialogue is just too hard to hear and understand. On the side of the headset's center controls, you'll find a "Speech Intelligibility" button. This feature highlights voices while minimizing background noises and distractions.

You can also choose from three presets on the transmitter to further suit your TV and music listening preference. Use the balance control to fine-tune the amount of volume in the left or right ear.

Overall its OK. Kind of hard on the ears. Biggest issue is requirement that it only supports PCM in digital mode. Seems to require too much "FIDDLING" of volume when you remove the ear buds.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a tremendous product! We have a 92-year old living with us and she does not hear well. Previously, she had her tv turned up so loud, you could hear it all over the house. Now with this stethoset, she enjoys all her programs and the tv is silent to us! And Crutchfield technical support helped me so much in deciding which system we should buy! Thank you Crutchfield and Sennheiser!!

These are wonderful headphones. Very comfortable and excellent sound. One of the best features is that company can listen to the tv and control volume to their needs while we are not disturbed using our headphones. It's literally like magic. Another wonderful aspect is the help dept. they really do help. I definitely recommend these headphones

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Just excellent. Good quality sound, easy to use. More importantly hooking up to the 4K Sony was extremely simple. One wire and you are done, no other connections needed and with the RF instead of Infrared moving around does not stop the sound even in another room. Manual lacks a lot. - better instructions and small tips would be helpful. To many languages in a small manual.

RS 5000 for hearing impaired

Sam from Mountville, PA on 4/21/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am hearing impaired and I previously used a Sennheiser RR840 system. The RS 5000 has more available volume and a better sound quality. Would prefer that the balance control was on the headset like the RR840. The other item that is annoying is that when you take off the headset you have to completely reset the volume when you put it back on.

Pros: Ample volume, good sound quality

Cons: Balance control not on the headset. Volume needs to be reset whenever you remove the headset.

After 1 1/2 wks of use.

Pros: Pros; Unit arrived as promised. Easy setup right out of the box. Good reception facing and not facing the source walking around house.

Cons: Cons; Design of unit lacking. Unit hurts ears 15 to 20 minutes of use. Talked to the catalog store which pointed me to Sennheiser, both offered no real fix. Sennheiser sent some foam tips which do not fit the unit. Maybe its just me but for the money I would think there would be a fix.

This product is remarkable. It makes watching tv so much more enjoyable. You can hear what's being said clearly and without distortion. The earbuds are light so you can watch tv for hours without feeling confined under large headphones. I would definitely recommend.

Love Sennheiser!

Roger from Bowling Green, KY on 8/17/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

At age 68, my hearing in one ear is not good. Turning the volume up was not a good option since my wife hears very well. The Sennheiser is great! I can now hear ALL voices on TV. Before the Sennheiser, I was at about 50% on the Hallmark channel and even less on PBS movies. A couple of things you should be aware of. If use a receiver/amplifier as part of your system, the headphone jack you need to power the Sennheiser will probably turn off the other speakers when you connect the Sennheiser headphones. Since my wife watches TV with me, that is a problem. I tried running a audio from my TiVo to an amplifier for Sennheiser only, but that did not work. Apparently, the signal was not compatible with the Sennheiser. I now use two receivers. One for the speakers and one for my Sennheiser.

Pros: Ever voice is crystal clear

Cons: If you are not the only person listening to the TV, making Sennheiser work can be complex. Not the best for ear comfort.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Had to return the first one because it would not provide any sound. Second one worked great.

Pros: Provides great sound and has long battery life.

Cons: Manual likes a lot. - instructions should tell you that a delay should be anticipated before sounds begins when first connect is made. Other small tips would be helpful. To manny languages in a small manual.

Great sound. Much better than my hearing aids. Unfortunately they were not comfortable on my ears. As far as ease of use and sound quality , they are at the top.

Pros: Great sound. Ease of set up and use. I liked the adjustment to suit each ear.

Cons: Uncomfortable pressure on my ear.

Traded Surround Sound for Dialog

Richard from Heber Springs, AR on 8/7/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought these to replace my Sennheiser RS 195 wireless headphones, which were fantastic simulated surround sound but the "Voice Boost" circuitry wasn't as dedicated as the RS 5000 and I was starting to miss a lot of dialog. Good sound on the RS 5000. I compared to my brothers TV Ears and the sound is slightly better but at a much higher price. I found that like his headphones, these cause me considerable ear pain. After 3 weeks now the pain is less and I can wear them for a longer period of time. I tried the smaller set of ear plugs but they were worse. Hopefully the pain will go away eventually. Good battery, last a long time. The three different sound frequency settings don't seem to work as well as the sound when it is not used. If the ear pain subsides I am very satisfied with the ability to hear dialog again although I do miss the surround sound abilities when watching movies.

Pros: Good clean dialog, long lasting battery.

Cons: Ear Pain.

Sennheiser RS5000 wireless headphones

Eddie R from Raleigh, NC on 6/12/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Have had several sets of the Sennheiser head sets in this style in the past and have been happy with them but this new unit has some great features. Love the style and the way the sound fades in and the bass is much improved without interfering with the voice quality, fiber optic is great for my application was always frustrated that the old units only had composite inputs if you have the older unit you will love this one

Pros: connections (fiber optic) bass quality volume fades in when it connects tighter fit doesn't feel like it is going to fall out

Cons: none that I can say

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It has been working out great for me.........I haven't had to ask my wife "What did they say" ever since I started using these headphones. I do agree with a previous review that I read, that with how the unit lays on you chest you do hear some back round noise when you move around, but the benefit of being able to hear all dialogue more that offsets this minor item.

Features

Overview: The Sennheiser RS 5000 Digital Wireless TV headphones enhance your TV watching experience by providing clear, intelligible audio of your favorite programs. The RS 5000 includes a docking station (TR 5000), a "stethoset" receiver (RR 5000), digital and analog connecting cables, and an extra pair of ear pads.

RR 5000: With a range of up to 200 feet, the RR 5000 wireless "stethoset" receiver allows you to move around freely while you watch TV. The headset receiver automatically turns on/off when you put it on and take it off. It has a built-in Lithium-Polymer rechargeable battery (3.7V, 350mAh) with a typical operating time of up to 12 hours. The RR 5000 features replaceable silicone rubber ear pads, available in two sizes for the proper fit. The "stethoset" receiver has an on-board volume control and Speech Intelligibility button.

TR 5000: The TR 5000 docking station and transmitter charges the RR 5000 headset in approximately 3 hours. You can connect an audio source, such as your TV or home stereo, using the supplied optical digital (Toslink) or analog cables (3.5mm). The included AC adapter has four interchangeable power plug adapters (North America, Europe, Great Britain, and Australia), allowing you to use the RS 5000 system most anywhere in the world. The TR 5000 lets you check the charging status of a docked receiver, as well as the remaining charge of a paired receiver when it is turned on.

Settings: The RS 5000 offers several settings for tailoring your listening experience to your individual tastes or needs:

  • Hearing Profiles: The hearing profiles change the sound of the audio signal to improve speech intelligibility by using compression, and boosting/attenuating certain frequencies. Using the keypad on the transmitter, you can choose from the following profiles:
    • Hearing Profile 1: Low frequency tones are slightly boosted to provide a warm sound. High frequency sounds are reduced to make them less piercing.
    • Hearing Profile 2: High frequencies are strongly boosted to give you a crystal-clear sound.
    • Hearing Profile 3: Low frequencies are lowered to prevent them from overpowering the high frequencies.
  • Speech Intelligibility Function: The Speech Intelligibility function automatically detects and reduces unwanted background noise to make speech easier to understand. The Speech Intelligibility button is located on the headset. A status LED on the transmitter will glow blue when the function is activated. Speech Intelligibility can be used in combination of any of the three Hearing Profiles.
  • Balance: You can adjust the left/right balance of the headset using the L and R buttons on the transmitter.

Pairing Multiple Receivers: Up to four RR 5000 "stethoset" receivers can be simultaneously paired to the transmitter. When more than one receiver is paired, you can not adjust the balance, nor will the remaining charge status and hearing profile be displayed on the transmitter.

Was unaware of this product into my look that the Crutchfield website. Had not been pleased with TV ears, which I have used for a long time. This product seems to be better. [ ABEL  Nov 13, 2017 ]
My wife needs it [ Jan  Oct 20, 2017 ]
I am hearing impaired. I have a pair of Sennheiser wireless headphones with simulated surround sound and "Voice Enhancement" feature but they are several years old and not in great shape and not as attuned to my hearing ability as they were when I purchased them. From what I have read the RS 5000 system is more geared for impaired hearing than cinema sound enhancement which is what I want. I want speech recognition technology that I can tailor to my needs. Hopefully I made the right choice. [ Richard  Jul 25, 2017 ]
Wife has hard time hearing TV, especially British shows. Hearing is not bad enough for hearing aids, which cost a LOT more than a TV hearing aid. She also does not like wearing headest(over the head) for long periods....gives her a headache, so the ear bug type works much better. Have tried cheaper versions, but they all have issue right away, so going with a good brand this time(Shennheizer) [ Earl  May 30, 2017 ]
Sew a lot and can't hear TV over sewing machine [ grace  May 25, 2017 ]
Have had other Sennheiser headsets still have two that have been very good, was glad to see this unit has optical input in the past only analog wish they would go to Bluetooth but this will help [ R  May 22, 2017 ]

Yes [ JOHNNY W  Oct 29, 2018 ]
Got me. Mine stopped working a long time ago. [ Richard  Oct 28, 2018 ]
Yes. You can silence them or keep the volume level normal for others in the room. [ David  Oct 27, 2018 ]
I use the Sennheiser 528124 white silicone cushions to lessen the ear discomfort. I also allow the headset to rest low in my ears (not directly over the ear canal). But still agree with you that they can be annoying. I replaced Sennheiser SET 840TV and RS 180 with the RS 5000 and find the RS5000 to bemuse better than the other headsets for sound compression to accommodate my hearing loss. The only annoying feature of the RS 5000 is the elongated design of the volume control unit which allows for noise to be translated as the headset rubs on my shirt. Despite these issues the RS 5000's are better than getting hearing aids. With the changing legislation permitting over the counter sale of hearing aid devices I expect that headphone manufactures will be promoting more options in devices for the hearing impaired.
