Product Research

Features

Wireless Backup Camera System: The Garmin BC 40 wireless backup camera (010-01866-12) works with select Garmin GPS navigators to provide a clear view behind your vehicle as you attempt to back up. A backup camera helps you easily spot vehicles, pedestrians, pets, and other hard-to-see obstructions behind your vehicle to minimize the risk of "blind zone" accidents whenever your vehicle is moving in reverse. On-screen guidance lines help you more easily gauge the distance to obstacles in view. The battery-operated camera has a built-in Wi-Fi transmitter, which wirelessly transmits the camera footage directly to the GPS device. The BC 40 mounts to your vehicle with the included license plate bracket, or to your RV, side-by-side, or ATV with the included tube mount. No drilling or wiring is required.

Compatibility: The BC 40 works with select Garmin portable navigation devices. Some navigation devices may not support the BC 40 without the latest software, so you should update your device prior to pairing with the camera. The BC 40 is only compatible with the following Garmin devices (sold separately)(as of March 2021):

Power Requirements: The BC 40 is powered by two "AA" batteries (not included). For best results, lithium batteries are recommended. Lithium-ion rechargeable batteries are not recommended. With average use, the lithium batteries last up to approximately 3 months.

Wireless Operation: The BC 40 wirelessly transmits a wide, clear video image up to 25 feet away via Wi-Fi (2.4GHz) or Bluetooth. When you insert the batteries, the camera automatically goes into pairing mode, and remains in pairing mode for up to five minutes. To pair, you should bring the navigation device within 5 feet of the camera. Up to 4 BC 40 wireless backup cameras can by paired with a single compatible Garmin device to give you multiple views behind your vehicle. The navigation device lets you cycle through each camera view. Depending upon the navigation device, you can show or hide the camera view using voice commands, such as "Show Video" or "Hide Video." When the camera detects the vehicle is moving forward, it automatically stops sending video, and the navigation device returns to normal operation. The time out for the camera video is 2-1/2 minutes, whether or not your vehicle has moved forward.

Camera Updates: Periodic updates to the camera software are available from Garmin. Software updates are received automatically from the paired Garmin navigation device. The software of both the navigation device and the camera should be updated regularly to keep both up to date. The software version of the camera can be checked on the display of the paired device.

Camera View: The Garmin BC 40 backup camera offers a 160° wide-angle view, allowing you to clearly see behind your vehicle. The camera's resolution is up to 720p (with a compatible Garmin navigator) with a frame rate of up to 15 fps. You can adjust the camera angle up and down to give you the best view behind your vehicle. The backup camera settings can be adjusted in the menu of the paired navigation device, including Flip Video, Guidance Lines, Rename Camera, Set Default Camera, Unpair, Automatic Activation, and Video Resolution.

Guidance Lines: Guidance lines are provided to assist you in backing up your vehicle and parking. When setting up the camera, you can adjust the lines left or right, and up or down so they reflect the outside edges of the vehicle. If you change the camera angle, you should immediately realign the guidance lines.

Construction: The BC 40 camera is designed to withstand harsh conditions. It has an IPX7 water rating (IEC 60529), and can withstand rain or snow. The recommended operating temperature range is -4° to 158°F (-20° to +70°C).

Mounting Options: The Garmin BC 40 comes with a versatile mounting bracket. It has two screw holes that allow you to mount the bracket to the top or bottom of many license plates. It can also be surface-mounted in many areas using the provided screws. Two 13" zip ties are included for mounting the camera bracket onto a roll bar, tube, or ladder rung. The zip ties pass through channels provided in the camera bracket. Once the bracket is installed, you can snap the camera into the bracket and aim it for the best mounting angle.
