About the Garmin Alpha® 10

Track Rover while on the hunt

Garmin's Alpha 10 handheld GPS tracker works in three different ways to help you keep tabs on your sporting dogs. When paired with a Garmin dog collar like the TT 15 or T 5, it can be used as a standalone device in the field, paired with a smartphone or tablet app, or employed in conjunction with a Garmin tracker or other wearable fitness device. With these options at your disposal, you can establish the best method for tracking and training your canines. And since it offers a full 48 hours of operation on a full battery charge, you can make the most of your time outdoors instead of waiting for it to power back up.

Garmin Alpha 10 handheld GPS dog tracker

The Alpha 10's 1.8" display lets you see easily which dog you're tracking.

Ready for the field

The Alpha 10's rugged construction makes it an ideal companion for the great outdoors. It's IPX7-rated waterproof, so you can take it near bodies of water without fear. It comes with a carabiner and  belt loop, as well as a dash mount for use with Garmin's DriveTrack in a vehicle. And it offers both ANT+ and Bluetooth® Low Energy for convenient pairing with a wide variety of devices.

You can monitor your dogs on the Alpha 10's 1.8" monochrome display. It's readable in direct sunlight and offers plenty of info, including which dogs you're tracking — it can work with up to 20 dogs wearing Garmin T 5 or TT 15 collars within 9 miles. Its directional arrow lets you locate currently selected dogs at a glance, and you have 18 levels of continuous and momentary stimulation for customizable training purposes.

Use it with another device

There are a few ways you can employ the Alpha 10 with another device. When paired with the Garmin DriveTrack, it lets you see where your dog is from the truck. If you've got a Garmin Instinct, fenix, or tactix, you can use their built-in dog tracking apps. And if you have an Alpha 100 or 200i or an Astro device, you can use the Alpha 10 as a companion for receiving information.

Use it with the Garmin Explore app

The Garmin Explore app lets you get more out of your Alpha 10 on your smartphone or tablet, as it displays dog tracking data in an easy-to-follow fashion. You'll get dog locations, tracks, and more, overlaid on a map inside the Explore app. You can also sync and view tracks after the hunt without missing any data, so you can review each dog's performance and take the next steps in their training.

Product Research

Features

Overview: The Garmin Alpha 10 handheld GPS dog tracking device allows you to track up to 20 dogs from up to 9 miles away. It also lets you train your dogs with tone, vibration, or corrective stimulation. It is built to withstand rugged terrain and has an IPX7 water rating for use in adverse weather conditions. This package contains only the handheld device -- individual dog tracking devices are required and sold separately. The Alpha 10 measures 2-3/8" (W) x 8-9/16" (H w/antenna) x 1-9/16" (D), and weighs 5.6 ounces.

MURS/VHF: The Alpha 10 communicates using MURS (Multi-Use Radio Service) in the VHF radio band. The TT 15, TT 15 Mini, T 5, and T 5 Mini dog devices are all compatible with the Alpha 10. The handheld device can track up to 20 dogs (using one of the above dog devices) and buddies (with other Alpha 10 handhelds).

GPS Tracking: The Alpha 10 uses data from GPS (the U.S. Global Positioning System) and Galileo (the European Union's version of GPS) satellites to pinpoint the location of each dog. The GPS data is transmitted via radio frequencies from the dog collar devices to the handheld device. The Alpha 10 lets you view information on each dog on its display. Up to 20 dogs collar devices can be linked to a single handheld device.

Display: The Alpha 10 has a 1.8" (diagonal) monochrome display with a resolution of 128 x 128 pixels. The sunlight-readable display lets you view the current status of up to three dogs (at a time) you are tracking, the distance and direction to the dog collar device, the current training command for the dog, and the battery status of each dog collar device. The display also shows you the current time, GPS signal strength, and battery status of the handheld device.

Tracking: The Alpha 10 works with the T 5, TT 15, T 5 Mini, and TT 15 Mini Dog Devices. Up to 20 Dog Devices can be paired with the handheld unit at once. After pairing each dog's collar device with the Alpha 10, you can keep track of the dog's location. A dog status icon indicates if the dog is in motion, currently sitting, on point, or has an animal treed.

Note: Tracking range is 9 miles for the TT 15 and T 5 and 4 miles for the TT 15 Mini and T 5 Mini.

Training: The Alpha 10 can be used to effectively train your dog. Before attempting to train your dog with the Alpha system, you should thoroughly research the training methods that are best suited for you, your dog, and your training goals. The Alpha 10 offers three training methods, which can be applied using controls on the handheld display:

  • Tone: The Alpha 10 activates an audible tone on the Dog Device that can be used as either a positive or negative training cue.
  • Vibration: The Dog Device vibrates each time you press the training key, to provide a cue to your dog. The maximum vibration is 8 seconds.
  • Stimulation: Through the contact points on the Dog Device, corrective electrical stimulation is delivered, either brief momentary stimulation, or continuous stimulation up to 8 seconds. You can use linear or traditional stimulation in your training. Linear stimulation lets you use progressive stimulation from level 1 to 18. Traditional stimulation lets you make quick changes using low, medium, or high settings within predetermined stimulation levels (1 through 6).

Contact Tracking: The Alpha 10 can also be used to track other hunters (using other Alpha or Astro devices) and to make contact or send messages to them. Each additional Alpha 10 device must be added as a contact to your handheld device. When additional devices are paired to the Alpha 10, you can send Emergency Alerts, send Preset Messages, and track your contacts. The Alpha 10 system can also mark your truck's location while you're hunting so you can navigate your way back.

Other Compatible Devices: With the Garmin Explore app on your iOS (13.0 or later) or Android smartphone, you can see real-time dog tracking information, save collections of dog tracks, and replay tracks to see exactly what happened during the hunt. If you're using a vehicle to follow and retrieve your dogs, you can use the Garmin Tread off-road powersport navigator, the Garmin DriveTrack 71 car navigator, or a Garmin Montana 700-series (750i, 700i, or 700) handheld device (each sold separately).

Power Options: The Alpha 10 is powered by a Lithium-Ion rechargeable battery. The battery charges inside the handheld device in approximately 2 hours using a USB power adapter (not included). A fully charged battery lasts up to 1 week, or about 40 hours of use.

Mounting Options: There are several options for mounting or carrying the Alpha 10 handheld device. Out of the box, the device has the Spine Mount attached which can be used with the Belt Clip. A fabric loop at the top of the Spine Mount can be used with the included Carabiner for clipping the device to a backpack or a belt loop. Optional lanyards and tether mounts are available directly from Garmin.
