Get a leg up on the links

Garmin's Approach Z82 golf rangefinder takes everything you love about their previous rangefinder (the Approach Z80) and adds a ton of cool new features, so you're able to assess your next shot with a wealth of information at the ready. You'll get details about yardage, obstacles, pin position, wind info, hazards, and the lay of the land in a jiffy, so you can determine your club and shot approach with the confidence of a seasoned pro.

Use it anywhere and with ease

The Approach Z82 comes preloaded with info on over 41,000 courses around the world, so you're likely to be able to use it at your favorite spots. And you can add map updates as they become available through Garmin's site. The Z82 boasts image stabilization and a flag finder feature that makes it easy to find the range to the flag — it even delivers a slight vibration to let you know you're locked in. The view shows the hole at up to 6X magnification in crisp detail. This waterproof companion also boasts up to 15 hours of battery life between charges.

Accurate to a "tee"

The Approach Z82's laser rangefinder is the most accurate available, but the Z82 does a lot more. When you look in the display, you'll see a full-color view plus a 2-D view of the hole you're playing, complete with distances to the front and back of the green. Activate the rangefinder and you'll get an accuracy of within 10" to the pin. Now it's up to you to hit it stiff.

Wind and hazard info

Wondering about what could come between you and double-eagle glory? The Z82 boasts Hazard View, which lets you scroll through each hazard and layup distance on the map. And if you're concerned about how the wind might affect your game, you can see wind speed and direction on the Approach's screen, so you'll know how to handle club selection and swing direction.

Advanced help

The PlaysLike Distance feature takes the guesswork out of uphill and downhill shots, by providing adjusted yardages that take elevation changes into account. You'll never be stuck guessing which club to hit. When you're teeing off, the Laser Range Arc feature draws an arc on the course map that lets you know which hazards are in play. And don't worry about blind shots — the PinPointer feature shows you the direction of the green, no matter where you are.

Get tournament ready

Tournament rules can be a drag, but in the name of good sportsmanship the Approach Z82 is willing to meet serious players halfway. You can engage Tournament Mode on the rangefinder, which disables the PinPointer and PlaysLike Distance features. You can still take advantage of the Approach's other features, and a light on the rangefinder lets your opponents know you're playing by the rules.

Compatible with the Garmin Golf app

Garmin's Golf app for your smartphone is a great way to stay connected with fellow golfers, and the Z82's compatible with the app. By pairing the rangefinder with the app, you can keep score and see detailed statistics on your phone between holes.

And yes, things can get a little feisty as you're approaching the 19th hole. Or maybe you're in a hurry to get out of those plaid pants and sweater vest. If you happen to leave your Approach Z82 behind on the course or in the clubhouse, you can use the "Find My Garmin" feature of the Garmin Golf app to locate your rangefinder before it accidentally goes home with someone else.

More details on the Garmin Approach® Z82

The Garmin Approach® Z82 replaces these items:

Product Research

Overview: The Garmin Approach Z82 is a golf laser rangefinder with built-in GPS and maps of your favorite golf courses. The hand-held rangefinder can help your golf game by providing accurate distance measurements up to 450 yards at the press of a button. Full color mapping is overlaid on the OLED viewfinder to give you accurate distances to the pin and hazards. The Approach Z82 comes with a carrying case and carabiner for attaching it to your bag or cart.

Design: The lightweight rangefinder weighs only 8.2 ounces, and is designed to fit comfortably in one hand. Three top-mounted control buttons let you power the unit on/off, open and scroll through the menu, select menu options, and range with the laser. The weather-resistant device has a water rating of IPX7, meaning it can withstand incidental exposure to water up to 1 meter for up to 30 minutes. The USB charging port has a waterproof cover to prevent damage.

Golf Course Maps: The Approach Z82 features more than 41,000 preloaded maps of golf courses worldwide, including over 17,800 in the United States. These two-dimensional maps appear along the left edge of the viewfinder, and provide distances to the front, center, and back of the green, distances to hazards and layups, and par information for each hole. The unit uses signals from GPS satellites to calculate your location, and your position on the golf course as you play.

Bluetooth Connected Features: The Z82 can connect to a compatible mobile device via Bluetooth to provide additional features through the Garmin Golf app:

  • Wind Speed and Direction: When connected to your mobile device, the Approach Z82 will display the current wind speed and direction. On the Hole View, the wind speed will appear in the lower left corner of the display with a circular arrow indicating the wind direction, relative to the pin.
  • Scorecard Uploading: The Z82 automatically uploads your score (see Scorecard below) to the Garmin Golf app when you sync your device to your smartphone.
  • Find My Garmin: Should you lose your rangefinder on the course, the Garmin Golf app can help you locate it using its last known location.

Optics: The rangefinder has a single rotating eyepiece with an adjustable diopter (+/-4) to focus the display for your eyesight. Images through the rangefinder are magnified 6 times to give you clear, crisp views. Image stabilization reduces shakiness, making it easier to find and range specific targets.

Laser Rangefinder: The laser rangefinder measures distances from 5.5 to 450 yards (5-411 meters), with an accuracy of +/- 10". External factors may affect ranging accuracy, including ambient light, weather conditions, target reflectivity, and target size.

Hole View: The Hole View shows the current hole you are playing. When you aim the rangefinder down the fairway, the 2D CourseView of the hole appears on the left edge of the viewfinder, showing distances to the front and back of the green, as well as accurate distances to hazards.

PlaysLike Distances: The Approach Z82 has a "plays like" feature that accounts for uphill or downhill shots to give you adjusted distances to hazards or the green. Arrows will appear next to the displayed distance to indicate the shot will play longer or shorter than expected due to a change in elevation.

PinPointer: When you are unable to see the green, the PinPointer feature displays an arrow that points to the green location to help you line up your shot. This is especially helpful if you are in the woods, playing a blind shot, or in a deep sand trap.

Driver Distance: During setup, you are asked for the average distance the ball travels on your drive. The Driver Distance appears as an arc on the hole view screen when you are standing on the tee box.

Laser Range Arc: The Laser Range Arc feature draws an arc on the CourseView map at the distance the laser ranged to see what's in play at that distance.

Flag Finder: The Flag Finder feature targets and locks onto the flag to measure the distance from your current position to the pin. This provides greater accuracy than targeting the pin.

Green View: When the laser is locked onto the flag, the Green View automatically displays the distance to the front and back of the green, as well as the shape of the green.

Measuring Your Shot: The Auto Measure Shot feature allows you to use the rangefinder to measure your shots. As you play, you can use the rangefinder to measure the distance to the pin before each shot. After the shot, and walk to your ball, the distance from the ranged location is automatically measured and appears on the Hole View screen. Each time you use the rangefinder to measure the distance to the pin, the shot distance is reset.

Scorecard: As you play, you can keep track of your score using the rangefinder. Using the top-mounted arrow buttons, you can select the hole and your score for the hole. After your round, you can connect to the Garmin Golf app and upload your score to view detailed statistics and participate in online leaderboards.

Tournament Mode: If playing in a sanctioned golf tournament, the Tournament Mode disables the PinPointer and PlaysLike distance features, which are not allowed.

Battery Information: The Approach Z82 is powered by a Lithium-Ion rechargeable battery. A fully charged battery lasts up to 15 hours with typical use. You can charge the battery via USB using an AC adapter or the USB port on your computer. When not in use, the device goes into standby mode to conserve battery life.
