About the Garmin Dash Cam 45

Versatile dash assistant

It's easy to feel safe when you're autopiloting through your daily commute, but heading onto the interstate quickly reminds you that the road can be a wild and wooly place. Garmin's got your back with just the thing — the very compact, quite discreet Dash Cam 45. Its adjustable magnetic mount adheres to your windshield, and Garmin gives you a vehicle charger for power. A 2" LCD shows you what this dash cam is loop-recording as you drive, but it's also keeping an eye on the road ahead to give you an audible Forward Collision warning if you approach a car too rapidly, a Lane Departure warning if you veer from your lane, and a Go alert if you're stopped and traffic ahead starts moving. Thanks to built-in GPS, the Dash Cam 45 even detects speed and red light cameras on the horizon and gives you a heads up.

Watching in HD

The Garmin Dash Cam 45 watches the road through a wide-angle lens, capturing everything ahead of you in full HD. So, if you're looking to record a cross-country road trip for posterity or you need to document your mileage for work or insurance purposes, this cam gives you the sharpest picture possible in low light or bright. Plus, its Travelapse feature can compile hours of video into a short highlight reel. The cam comes with a 4GB microSD card, but there's room to upgrade up to 64GB for selectable WVGA, 720p, or 1080p. Garmin also equips the Dash Cam 45 with built-in Wi-Fi for easy sharing with mobile devices.

Incident Detection

If you're involved in an accident, you'll be thankful for Garmin's Incident Detection feature which uses a built-in G-Sensor to detect hard braking or a collision, and then saves vital video files for a complete record of the event. Built-in GPS geo-tags your files with latitude, longitude, date, time, speed, and direction of travel in order to provide a more complete presentation.

Built-in microphone

An integrated microphone allows you to record audio; if you need to take the cam out and get some snapshots of damage, it has 2.1 megapixel photo capability and battery life up to one hour as well. Watch whatever you record on the cam's built-in monitor, or download Garmin's free Dash Cam player software to view and organize your video files on your computer.

Parking mode

This fully automated camera starts recording once the engine is turned on and stops when the engine is turned off. However, using an optional hardwire powering kit (not included), a built-in motion sensor wakes the camera when your vehicle is parked to record what's in front of it — a great theft deterrent.

A kit is available for permanently wiring your dash cam into your vehicle.

    Product Research

    Features

Overview: The Garmin Dash Cam 45 is a compact, stand-alone HD video recorder which mounts to your windshield with the supplied adhesive/magnetic mount. It has a 2" LCD display, and comes with a 4 GB microSD card. As it records, the time and date and location data are embedded into the video so you'll know exactly when and where a captured event occurred. Other safety features include Forward Collision and Lane Departure warnings, as well as alerts for nearby red light and speed cameras along your route.

GPS: Built-in Garmin GPS technology provides an accurate record of your location, should an event take place. The unit will embed location information into the recordings as you drive. Should an accident or incident occur, the captured footage will include the exact location (latitude and longitude), direction of travel, speed, date, and time the event took place.

Recording: The Dash Cam 45 records in a continuous loop onto a microSD card. It records both audio and video as you drive, or video only (if desired). As long as the Dash Cam is receiving power, it is recording. As the available memory runs out, it starts recording over the oldest recordings. You can manually save a video recording or take a still photo by pressing a button on the side panel.

Resolution: The Dash Cam 45 records high definition video in AVI format (H.264 compression) at 30 frames per second onto the microSD card. The higher the resolution, the shorter the available recording time on the memory card. You can set the video resolution to 1920 x 1080p or 1260 x 720p.

HDR: High Dynamic Range imaging records multiple exposure levels for each frame to improve video clarity in high contrast or low-light conditions.

Display: The unit is equipped with a 2" color LCD display. You can use the display to properly aim the camera while recording, or for playing back recordings. In the menu, you can adjust the brightness, color mode, and display timeout.

Lens: The Dash Cam has a 122° wide-angle lens that gives you a full view of the road. You can manually adjust the exposure for brighter or darker lighting conditions.

Microphone: An integrated microphone records audio inside the vehicle. If desired, the microphone can be turned off so the unit records only video.

Rechargeable Battery: The built-in rechargeable battery is charged when connected to vehicle power through the DC power port. Normally, the unit will be plugged into vehicle power as you drive. If you need to remove the Dash Cam from the vehicle, the battery has enough stored power to operate approximately 30 minutes.

Record After Power Loss: You can set the Dash Cam to continue recording after the DC power is lost. You can choose between 5 seconds, 15 seconds, 30 seconds, and 1 minute.

Record While Parked: If you want to record video while the vehicle is parked, you will need the optional Parking Mode Cable. With the cable connected, you can power the camera when the vehicle is parked and turned off. In the menu, you can set the amount of time the camera remains active while parked.

microSD Card: The Dash Cam 45 comes with a 4 GB microSD Class 10 card. The camera is compatible with microSD cards up to 64 GB. Class 10 speed rated cards, or higher, are required.

Automatic Incident Detection: The Dash Cam has a built-in G-sensor, which can detect when a collision or hard braking occurs. When the G-sensor detects an incident, the previous, current, and next recordings are automatically saved. This way, a complete record of the moments before, during, and after the event is preserved.

Forward Collision Warning System (FCWS): As you drive, the Dash Cam 45 continuously records the view in front of your vehicle. The Forward Collision Warning feature alerts you if you are driving too close to the vehicle ahead of you. The FCWS feature automatically activates when your vehicle exceeds 30 mph. The device determines your speed using GPS, and calculates a safe following distance to the vehicle ahead of you, based on your speed. If the device detects that you are following too closely, a warning appears on the screen and an audible alert will sound. You can set the Forward Collision Warning sensitivity to low, medium, or high.

Go Alert: The Go Alert can alert you at a stop light or during traffic delays when the vehicle in front of you has started moving. When the road ahead of you is clearing, the Dash Cam 45 plays a tone and displays an alert.

Lane Departure Warning System: The Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS) alerts you when you may be drifting over into oncoming traffic or in danger of running off the road. The LDWS provides alerts only when your vehicle exceeds 40 mph. The alert appears on the left or right side of the screen to indicate which lane boundary you crossed.

Red Light/Speed Cameras: The Dash Cam 45 will sound an alert, and display a warning, that you approach a reported speed or red light camera. The feature is only available in select regions, where location information on Red Light and Speed cameras is available. A subscription is required to obtain and maintain an updated database of red light and speed camera locations.

Damage Camera: Should you be involved in an accident, you can remove the Dash Cam 45 from its mount and use it to take pictures of vehicle or property damage.

Travelapse: The Travelapse feature can capture still photos at a set interval to create a fast-motion, time-lapse video of your trip. When the dash cam is recording Travelapse, it does not stop recording normal dash cam video.

Installation: The Dash Cam 45 is designed to be mounted on your windshield using the included adhesive magnetic mount. The adhesive metal disk is only 7/8" in diameter, however, it is designed for long term installations. The camera mount magnetically attaches to the metal disk, and allows it to be easily removed. The camera should always be mounted in the upright orientation, otherwise the resulting video will be upside down or sideways. You can mount the camera in the center, left side, or right side of the windshield. If connected to an ignition-switch powered outlet, the Dash Cam will turn on and off automatically as you turn the ignition on and off. An optional Parking Mode Cable allows you to hardwire the camera to the vehicle's power and ground circuits.

Note: For proper functionality of the device, you should enter the Camera Placement position (left, right, center) and Vehicle Height (normal, tall) in the menu.

Viewing Videos and Photos: You can view recorded video and still image files on the Dash Cam's LCD screen. You can remove the microSD card and view the files using a card reader on your computer. When viewing the footage on your computer, you'll have a record of the date and time. Videos and still images are stored in several folders:

    • 100EVENT: videos saved automatically when the unit detects an incident
    • 101PHOTO: still photos
    • 102SAVED: manually saved videos
    • 103PARKM: videos saved while parked
    • 104TLPSE: Travelapse videos
    • 105UNSVD: Unsaved video footage; when storage space is full, the oldest unsaved video is overwritten.

It's hard to find brand names dash cam, so when I saw a Garmin dash cam I made my choice quickly. It looks as if all the models from Garmin have almost the same features, so I decided to save money and go with the 45 model. [ Isaac  Nov 24, 2017 ]

Sorry, forgot that the parking cable has 3 wires one 12v hot, one accessory amd ground. I assume when key os off it knows when acc canle turns off and goes in parking mode. So forget what i said earlier.

Hi DC. Do not know if am answering your question, but the cam will turn on as soon the 12V is on. The auto does not have to be running.
    [ EFRAIN  Mar 09, 2019 ]
    A
It should work with either cable, the wireless kit just allows it to be hooked to a constant hot 12v source as most cars have lighter sockets that are off when your key is out or car is off.
    [ MARK  Mar 08, 2019 ]

Only works with the extra wiring kit to have parked mode.

Yes they sell a kit with extra magnet and attachment piece, seen it for 9.99 abouts. Lets you share camera in another car.

Depends on size of sdcard, if you have 64gb sdcard i read it only stores 12:xx hours. So any smaller and you are probably looping and erasing the previous recordings.
    [ MARK  Apr 25, 2018 ]

The data is keep getting rewritten all time. In any given moment, it should have last hour of your driving. Memory card 4GB, that was included in original package, doesn't have a lot of space. It's very high definition videos.
    [ Larry  Apr 25, 2018 ]

    [ Jared Jay  Jan 31, 2018 ]

I personally do not have any "add-ons". Just the camera installed on my windshield. Not sure exactly what you are asking, but is a great dash cam to have. Have not had any problems.
    [ EFRAIN  Jan 30, 2018 ]
    A
If by "add-ons" you mean the parking mode cable, then yes. The camera works without buying anything other than the camera. The parking mode add-on cable just allows the dash cam's parking mode to work. Parking mode turns the camera on even when the car is off based on a motion sensor in the camera. Without the parking cable add-on the dash cam will just work as a normal dash cam and will not come on unless your car is on.
    [ Jesse  Jan 30, 2018 ]
    A
What add-ons are you talkimg about the hard wire kit? You will need a microsd card for recording, the extra hardwire kit allows to record movement in the direction of the camera so if someone is trying to open your hood or walks in front it will take a short video of that. If you dont need that and will use cigarette lightwr power you should be fine with whats provided.
    [ MARK  Jan 30, 2018 ]
    A
hi not sure what you mean by add-ons? camera battery life is 30 or less unplugged? if not what your looking for then ask again but be specific. thanks
    [ TOMMY  Jan 30, 2018 ]
    A
Yes. You can turn off any extras in the settings.
    [ Chad  Jan 30, 2018 ]
    A
The camera requires a 12 volt power supply; a cigarette lighter cable is included. It will run briefly without one, but not long enough to be useful. You don't have to use the "parking cable accessory unless you don't want to use the cigarette lighter cable.
