About the Garmin Dash Cam 65W
Record a 180° view in 1080p
Record a 180° view in 1080p
It's easy to feel safe when you're autopiloting through your daily commute, but heading onto the interstate quickly reminds you that the road can be a wild and wooly place. Garmin's got your back with just the thing — the very compact, quite discreet Dash Cam 65W. It watches the road through a 180° wide-angle lens, capturing everything ahead of you in HD. So, if you're looking to record a cross-country road trip for posterity or you need to document your mileage for work or insurance purposes, this cam gives you the sharpest picture possible in low light or bright thanks to High Dynamic Range imaging.
Wireless sync with your smartphone
The Dash Cam 65W features built-in Wi-Fi, which allows you to wirelessly transfer any recorded video to your smartphone using Garmin's free app. You can also always watch whatever you record on the cam's built-in monitor, or download Garmin's free Dash Cam player software to view and organize your video files on your computer.
Highlight reel
With the Travelapse feature, you can compile hours of video into a short highlight reel. The cam comes with a 4GB microSD card, but there's room to upgrade up to 64GB for selectable 720p, 1080p, or 1440p.
Voice control
An integrated microphone allows you to use voice control to save video, take a still image, start and stop the Travelapse feature, and start and stop audio recording.
Versatile dash assistant
Stick the included mounting disk on your winshield, and the Dash Cam 65W's adjustable mount magnetically connects to the mounting disk. Garmin gives you a vehicle charger for power. A 2" LCD screen shows you what this dash cam is loop-recording as you drive; it's also keeping an eye on the road ahead to give you an audible Forward Collision warning if you approach a car too rapidly, a Lane Departure warning if you veer from your lane, or a Go alert if you're stopped and traffic ahead starts moving. Thanks to built-in GPS and a paid subscription to Garmin's Cyclops™ service, the Dash Cam 65W even gives you a heads up about speed and red light cameras on the horizon.
Incident Detection
If you're involved in an accident, you'll be thankful for Garmin's Incident Detection feature which uses a built-in G-Sensor to detect hard braking or a collision, and then saves vital video files for a complete record of the event. Built-in GPS geo-tags your files with latitude, longitude, date, time, speed, and direction of travel in order to provide a more complete presentation. If you need to take the cam out and get some snapshots of damage, the camera has 2.1 megapixel photo capability.
Parking mode
This fully automated camera starts recording once the engine is turned on and stops when the engine is turned off. However, using an optional hardwire powering kit (not included), a built-in motion sensor wakes the camera when your vehicle is parked to record what's in front of it — a great theft deterrent.
A kit is available for permanently wiring your dash cam into your vehicle.

More details on the Garmin Dash Cam 65W
Product Research
Features
Overview: The Garmin Dash Cam 65W is a compact, stand-alone HD video recorder which mounts to your windshield with the supplied adhesive/magnetic mount. It has a 2" LCD display, and comes with a 4 GB microSD card. As it records, the time and date and location data are embedded into the video so you'll know exactly when and where a captured event occurred. Voice Control lets you keep your hands on the wheel and speak commands to the camera. Other safety features include Forward Collision and Lane Departure warnings, as well as alerts for nearby red light and speed cameras along your route.
GPS: Built-in Garmin GPS technology provides an accurate record of your location, should an event take place. The unit will embed location information into the recordings as you drive. Should an accident or incident occur, the captured footage will include the exact location (latitude and longitude), direction of travel, speed, date, and time the event took place.
Voice Control: The Dash Cam can be controlled by your voice, allowing you to keep your hands on the wheel. When you speak a preset phrase, the device will respond with a tone. Voice Commands recognized by the unit include:
- "OK, Garmin" (to activate voice control)
- "Save Video"
- "Take a Picture"
- "Record Audio"
- "Stop Audio"
- "Start Travelapse"
- "Stop Travelapse"
Recording: The Dash Cam 65W records in a continuous loop onto a microSD card. It records both audio and video as you drive, or video only (if desired). As long as the Dash Cam is receiving power, it is recording. As the available memory runs out, it starts recording over the oldest recordings. You can manually save a video recording or take a still photo by pressing a button on the side panel.
Resolution: The Dash Cam 65W records high definition video in AVI format (H.264 compression) at 30 frames per second onto the microSD card. The higher the resolution, the shorter the available recording time on the memory card. You can set the video resolution to one of the following:
- 1920 x 1080p, 60 fps
- 1920 x 1080p, 30 fps w/HDR
- 1920 x 1080p, 30 fps
- 1260 x 720p, 30 fps
HDR: High Dynamic Range imaging records multiple exposure levels for each frame to improve video clarity in high contrast or low-light conditions.
Display: The unit is equipped with a 2" color LCD display. You can use the display to properly aim the camera while recording, or for playing back recordings. In the menu, you can adjust the brightness, color mode, and display timeout.
Lens: The Dash Cam has a 180° wide-angle lens that gives you a full view of the road, including cross traffic. You can manually adjust the exposure for brighter or darker lighting conditions.
Microphone: An integrated microphone records audio inside the vehicle. If desired, the microphone can be turned off so the unit records only video.
Rechargeable Battery: The built-in rechargeable battery is charged when connected to vehicle power through the DC power port. Normally, the unit will be plugged into vehicle power as you drive. If you need to remove the Dash Cam from the vehicle, the battery has enough stored power to operate approximately 30 minutes.
Record After Power Loss: You can set the Dash Cam to continue recording after the DC power is lost. You can choose between 5 seconds, 15 seconds, 30 seconds, and 1 minute.
Record While Parked: If you want to record video while the vehicle is parked, you will need the optional Parking Mode Cable. With the cable connected, you can power the camera when the vehicle is parked and turned off. In the menu, you can set the amount of time the camera remains active while parked.
microSD Card: The Dash Cam 65W comes with a 4 GB microSD Class 10 card. The camera is compatible with microSD cards up to 64 GB. Class 10 speed rated cards, or higher, are required.
Automatic Incident Detection: The Dash Cam has a built-in G-sensor, which can detect when a collision or hard braking occurs. When the G-sensor detects an incident, the previous, current, and next recordings are automatically saved. This way, a complete record of the moments before, during, and after the event is preserved.
Forward Collision Warning System (FCWS): As you drive, the Dash Cam 65W continuously records the view in front of your vehicle. The Forward Collision Warning feature alerts you if you are driving too close to the vehicle ahead of you. The FCWS feature automatically activates when your vehicle exceeds 30 mph. The device determines your speed using GPS, and calculates a safe following distance to the vehicle ahead of you, based on your speed. If the device detects that you are following too closely, a warning appears on the screen and an audible alert will sound. You can set the Forward Collision Warning sensitivity to low, medium, or high.
Go Alert: The Go Alert can alert you at a stop light or during traffic delays when the vehicle in front of you has started moving. When the road ahead of you is clearing, the Dash Cam 65W plays a tone and displays an alert.
Lane Departure Warning System: The Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS) alerts you when you may be drifting over into oncoming traffic or in danger of running off the road. The LDWS provides alerts only when your vehicle exceeds 40 mph. The alert appears on the left or right side of the screen to indicate which lane boundary you crossed.
Red Light/Speed Cameras: The Dash Cam 65W will sound an alert, and display a warning, that you approach a reported speed or red light camera. The feature is only available in select regions, where location information on Red Light and Speed cameras is available. A subscription is required to obtain and maintain an updated database of red light and speed camera locations.
Damage Camera: Should you be involved in an accident, you can remove the Dash Cam 65W from its mount and use it to take pictures of vehicle or property damage.
Travelapse: The Travelapse feature can capture still photos at a set interval to create a fast-motion, time-lapse video of your trip. When the dash cam is recording Travelapse, it does not stop recording normal dash cam video.
Installation: The Dash Cam 65W is designed to be mounted on your windshield using the included adhesive magnetic mount. The adhesive metal disk is only 7/8" in diameter, however, it is designed for long term installations. The camera mount magnetically attaches to the metal disk, and allows it to be easily removed. The camera should always be mounted in the upright orientation, otherwise the resulting video will be upside down or sideways. You can mount the camera in the center, left side, or right side of the windshield. If connected to an ignition-switch powered outlet, the Dash Cam will turn on and off automatically as you turn the ignition on and off. An optional Parking Mode Cable allows you to hardwire the camera to the vehicle's power and ground circuits.
Viewing Videos and Photos: You can view recorded video and still image files on the Dash Cam's LCD screen. You can remove the microSD card and view the files using a card reader on your computer. When viewing the footage on your computer, you'll have a record of the date and time. Videos and still images are stored in several folders:
- 100EVENT: videos saved automatically when the unit detects an incident
- 101PHOTO: still photos
- 102SAVED: manually saved videos
- 103PARKM: videos saved while parked
- 104TLPSE: Travelapse videos
- 105UNSVD: Unsaved video footage; when storage space is full, the oldest unsaved video is overwritten.

Unit works well. Can't complain but the sticky stuff that holds the unit to the mirror wasn't covered in the instructions until late. I need now to use some glue. Also the mobile camera picture was not covered in the manual.
