Garmin Drive 61LMT-S portable navigator

The Drive works with Garmin Smartphone Link and your phone to help you find parking nearby in real time.

Take your maps for a spin nearly anywhere

The Drive 61LMT's 6" color touch display provides access to maps of the United States (excluding Alaska), plus Puerto Rico and several Caribbean islands. You'll find millions of preloaded points of interest — including helpful Foursquare and TripAdvisor databases — at your service when you want to get off the road. The Drive 61LMT also lets you assign custom points of interest so you can find favorite stops that are a little off the beaten path.

Driver alerts keep you on your toes

The Drive 61LMT delivers GPS-based alerts for upcoming sharp curves, school zones, red-light and speed cameras, railroad and animal crossings, and more. The navigator will tell you when there's a change in the posted speed limit on major roads and give you a visual warning if you're exceeding it. The Drive 61LMT even activates a driver fatigue warning when it detects long periods of consecutive driving without any extended stops.

Big-time guidance deserves a big screen

Garmin's bountiful 6" display makes the maps easy to see and follow. And you can manually adjust the screen orientation by 90 degrees, if you prefer a lengthwise view that's more in line with your smartphone display. The Drive 61LMT's slim profile ensures it won't take up too much real estate, and the advanced rear mount will keep it firmly in place on your windshield.

Connect with Garmin Smartphone Link

Smartphone users can download Garmin's free Smartphone Link app to their device and connect to the Drive. When paired, the navigator can use your phone's existing data plan to share information such as saved and recently found locations, where you parked, and your current destination. You can then use your phone to give you step-by-step directions back to your car in a large parking lot, for example, or to import destinations to your navigator from your phone.

Up-to-the-minute parking and traffic info

Live traffic updates come courtesy of your smartphone when you've paired your Drive with the Garmin Smartphone Link app. Live parking gives you pricing and availability in nearby lots and garages as you approach your destination, and also works through the app. You'll get coverage in most metropolitan areas. The traffic reports are free, but data charges may apply for your smartphone.

Garmin Live Services

You can also launch Garmin Live Services from the app, which give you local weather reports, real-time photos from traffic cameras, and area gas prices. Some Garmin Live Services require a subscription. Data charges may apply for using Smartphone Link — you'll want to check with your service provider.

TripAdvisor® and Foursquare® points of interest

Foursquare's crowd-sourced database of points of interest gives you a whole new take on where to stop for gas, food, lodging, or shopping. When you look for points of interest on the Drive, you'll see the most relevant Foursquare results at the top of the search bar, so you'll know the destination is verified by actual users. Pair your Drive with Garmin's Smartphone Link, and you'll also see helpful info such as ratings, hours, and price range displayed on the navigator's screen. And if you're a Foursquare user yourself, you can check in nearly anywhere through the navigator when it's paired with your phone.

The Drive also includes TripAdvisor ratings for hotels, restaurants, and attractions which are provided by fellow travelers to this popular platform.

Go directly to the exact spot

Garmin's Direct Access feature helps you find your way to specific points at select malls, airports, and universities, so you don't have to search helplessly once you've gotten to the general area. It'll even help you get through parking lots to get you as close to your exact destination as possible, giving travelers an edge when it's time to rent a car.

Friendly voice instructions

Voice prompts speak the instructions to you like a friend would, using easy-to-see landmarks, buildings and businesses, and traffic lights, rather than streets with tiny signs that you might not see in time. You'll also hear directions spoken in a personable, human-sounding voice that you'll comprehend readily.

Spot-on guidance

This Garmin announces actual street names at turns, so you'll hear "turn right on Marlowe Avenue" instead of "take the next right." Colored arrows pop up as you approach complicated interchanges and junctions, showing you the proper lane for the next maneuver. To keep you oriented, you'll always have a text reminder of which street you're on.

See what lies ahead or around quickly

Garmin's improved search function finds the right destination through addresses and points of interest quickly and accurately.  And with one tap of the screen, the Up Ahead display will pull up details for services that lie ahead, including restaurants, gas stations, and more — all without leaving the map screen. Garmin even includes milestones to help you keep track of how far you have to go.

Garmin's road-friendly extras

This Garmin's compatible with the optional Garmin BC 30 wireless rear-view camera, so you can add an extra layer of safety when you're backing out of your driveway. Garmin's trip computer lets you plan trips and record mileage, maximum speed, total time, and more.

Bigger screen makes it

Crutchfield customer from Mount Vernon, WA on 3/17/2019

Nice unit that does nearly everything you'd want. Being a senior citizen, the larger screen size is nice. I miss the ability to easily download the British accent voice however. My 2599 also had stronger color contrast on the maps. All in all, it has been worth the upgrade to get the bigger screen.

New Garmin

Ben from Verona, NJ on 6/24/2018

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I bought this unit to replace my ageing Nuvi. It still worked ok but the screen was starting to go bad. Really like this new one. Much faster the my older one. Love the more human spoken directions, makes it a lot easier to understand in an area that you have never been before. My only "con" is the screen. While it is bright it seems to get washed out by the sun more than the old one. Same car, same dash mount (garmin bean bag), same location on the dash. But I am sure I can get used to it.

Pros: Large screen, much better spoken directions, faster looking up addresses

Cons: The screen tends to get washed out by the sun more than my Nuvi.

My advice it to NOT buy Garmin products

Tim from Cherry Hill, NJ on 2/18/2018

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I'm not going to buy any more products from Garmin! I had a Garmin nuviCamLM that did not last very long due to a battery problem (it would not charge), and didn't like the options presented to me by Garmin's customer support when I tried to return it. I've had this Garmin Drive 61 LMT-S unit since August 2017, and it too has problems. The unit will reset itself for no apparent reason. By "reset", I mean that it will turn itself off, and then turn back on again. It should NOT be doing this especially since it was plugged it AND has battery backup!! If you are in the middle of driving some place, you have to go through the menus to get back to the map and then select to continue your route. On a recent 1-hour trip, it reset itself 4 times!! It was so a distraction, that I unplugged the unit, and did not use it any more. Hopefully, Garmin will do better when I try to return this. My guess is that Garmin will offer to fix it for free, but I will have to pay for shipping. I'd rather get a full refund though, and hopefully I will. On the plus side, the screen is a nice size and has images of the exit signs when you are on major highways, and clearly shows the directions for your route.

Pros: The screen is a nice size and clear to view. Exit ramps and turns are nicely visualized.

Cons: Unit turns itself off at random times, which is VERY distracting!! This is the 2nd Garmin unit I've had in the last 2 years with problems, so I would say that Garmin products are unreliable. Garmin customer support.

Garmin Drive 61 LMT-S Review

Hal from San Antonio, TX on 10/26/2017

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I have owned Garmin GPSs for at least 10-15 years, and really believe in their interface and technology. However today's offerings are getting way too complicated and frankly dangerous at times in my opinion. Specifically on this model, the screen is not clear enough or bright enough on sunny days. At certain angles its hard to read the display even on a 6 inch screen. A five inch is even worst. To get traffic, you have to have a smartphone Bluetooth compatible with the Garmin. Then you have to hope that you don't loose the Bluetooth connection while driving. Older Garmins, up until 2017 year models, were available with "Garmin Traffic" which has a build in traffic receiver in the GPS. Now you have to use Bluetooth to get traffic updates. Finally, Garmin now forces its "Foursquare" gimmicky system on you. It puts icons on the map screen for Foursquare recommended locations. In urban areas, the icons block out the map too much on a 6" screen. You are suppose to be able to defeat the Foursquare system by deselecting it in the System set up. But it keeps coming back, and to defeat it again, you have to play with the unit. In the brief time I used this unit I found myself constantly fiddling with it while I was driving to get it to present what I wanted to see. That is very distracting and frankly dangerous.Be forewarned. PS: Foursquare looks like Garmin is paid to use these business as Foursquare recommendations.

Pros: Very good interface, Garmin has always been the best at it.

Cons: Way too complicated and therefore demanding to use. Requires too much manual interface with the unit, especially while driving in traffic. Can be very distracting and therefore potentially dangerous.

Amazing search functions

David from Westford, MA on 9/27/2017

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

This is a fabulous GPS with amazing features... Its hard to believe its less than $200. I was seriously considering getting a Kenwood Excelon headunit with Garmin GPS capabilities, but I was told by my Crutchfield sales rep that the portable GPS units have significantly more features and will cost 1/10 of the price of a custom stereo install. I also purchased the backup camera so I can see my trailer ball, but I have yet to install it. Highly recommend.

Pros: Fast recalculation, great search buttons, love the traffic feature

Cons: Garmin needs to include a better dash mount with adhesive pads

Nice

Brett from Richmond, VA on 7/10/2017

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

It is bigger than I thought it would have been. It's weird having something in my window that was normally not there. However, yes it's big....but it's easy to ready from a distance which is nice. The GPS did not get me lost on my one and only trip with it. And does a good job navigating with clear short phrases. Over all...I'm happy with it. It's just a bit big, but that's ok b

Pros: Screen size Accurate

Cons: Screen size

So Far, So Good

Philip from Salt Lake City, UT on 6/20/2017

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

So far, so good. I bought this mainly for travel, and using it in rental cars. (My daily driver has a GPS unit built-in.) I've take one trip, domestically, and have an upcoming international trip. Updating the unit is fairly easy and simple. I purchased the required international maps from Garmin, and loaded those. It seems OK. The unit is simple to operate, in spite of it being fully featured. Give me a bit more time to live with it, and I can then give you a better review.

Pros: 1. The degree of accuracy is amazing. 2. The amount of things that it can do is outstanding.

Cons: 1. A bit hard to get it set-up to do only what you need it to do, not everything it can do. 2. The volume is still quiet, even turned up all the way.

General Features
Navigation Features

General Features

Overview: The Garmin Drive 61LMT-S, part of the 2017 entry-level Garmin Drive series, is a portable GPS navigation device that provides automatic routing and turn-by-turn voice directions. The unit receives data from overhead global positioning satellites, not cellular signals, for reliable navigation directions. Garmin Drive devices include driver awareness alerts for upcoming hazards such as sharp curves, railroad crossings, school zones, and speed limit changes. It can also provide a fatigue warning after you have driven a long period of time without a significant break. The Drive 61LMT-S features free Lifetime Map Updates.

6.1" Touchscreen LCD: The Drive 61LMT-S features a 6.1" (diagonal), dual-orientation, color TFT touchscreen LCD with a resolution of 800 x 480 pixels. The resistive touch screen can be viewed in either landscape or portrait orientation, and can be switched in the Settings Menu.

Preloaded Maps: The Drive 61LMT-S contains NAVTEQ's City Navigator NT North America "Lower 49" maps with detailed road maps of the United States (including Hawaii, but NOT Alaska), plus Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Bahamas, French Guiana, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Saint Barthélemy, and Jamaica.

Note: Optional maps are available for this device via microSD card or download directly from Garmin.com.

On-screen Owner's Manual: The unit now features the full Garmin owner's manual in its memory, so you can access it at any time.

microSD Card Slot: The Drive 61LMT-S has a microSD card slot so you can store and use optional maps (available from Garmin), or download custom voices and vehicles from the Garmin Garage.

Universal Mount: The Drive 61LMT-S features a universal mount that holds the unit securely in place, but can be easily removed. The circular Universal Bracket mount clips into the socket on the back of the unit, and fits the ball mount found on Garmin windshield and dash mounts.

Power Requirements: The Garmin Drive 61LMT-S is powered by a built-in Lithium-Ion battery, which will provide up to 1 hour of use when fully charged. The unit comes with a 12-volt DC power adapter for powering and charging the unit while you travel. The unit can be powered by your computer when it is connected via the supplied mini-B USB cable.

Compatibility: You can connect the unit to your computer with the supplied mini-B USB cable for downloading map updates, custom POIs, voices, and vehicles. The Drive 61LMT-S is compatible with Windows XP or newer and Mac OS X 10.4 or later.

Navigation Features

Free Lifetime Map Updates: The Drive 61LMT-S offers free lifetime map updates (of the preloaded map software) so you'll always have the most up-to-date maps, POIs, and navigation information. Map updates are available for download up to 4 times a year with no subscription or update fees and no expiration dates. Free Lifetime Map Updates are subject to Terms & Conditions.

Live Traffic: Live Traffic helps you avoid traffic tie-ups that may delay your travel. Here (formerly NAVTEQ) collects, processes, and distributes real-time traffic conditions. Live Traffic requires the use of a Bluetooth-enabled smartphone loaded with the Garmin Smartphone Link app (requires iOS 9.3 or later, or Android 4.0.3 and up). Traffic data is refreshed every 60 seconds, with more than 1000 messages received with every update. Updates appear to the side of the map, so your driving map remains onscreen at all times. The updates can give you details about the situation, including the estimated length of the delay. Free Lifetime Live Traffic requires no subscription or activation, and is subject to Terms & Conditions.

Note: Traffic updates are available in approximately 124 markets throughout the U.S. and Canada. Location-relevant pop-up ads and coupons may be received when traffic is enabled on the unit.

Live Parking / LiveTrack: In addition to Live Traffic, the Smartphone Link app enables the use of Live Parking and LiveTrack on your Drive 61LMT-S. Live Parking from Parkopedia.com shows you helpful parking information, including pricing and availability trends for on-street public parking. LiveTrack lets you share your location to your friends so they can track your whereabouts.

POIs with TripAdvisor: The built-in maps include millions of Points of Interest (POIs) such as hotels, restaurants, gas stations, attractions, and ATMs. Many of the listings show ratings from TripAdvisor, the world's largest travel site. Additional search information sourced from Foresquare. In addition, you can download additional points of interest and add them to the unit's memory (Custom POIs). The free POI Loader software can be downloaded from the Garmin website to assist you in creating Custom POIs.

Map View Options: You can choose from a 3D map view or two 2D map views (Track Up or North Up) as you navigate to your destination.

Garmin Real Directions: The Drive 61LMT-S announces your upcoming maneuvers with a clear spoken voice. Using Garmin Real Directions, the spoken turn-by-turn directions utilize traffic lights and recognizable landmarks to guide you. For example, the unit uses phrases such as "Turn left at the traffic light" or "Turn right at the gas station."

Junction View: While navigating a route on a major roadway, a realistic image of an upcoming junction appears on the screen. Junction View with Lane Assist can help you select the proper lane with brightly colored arrows pointing the way.

Speed Limits: As you travel along a major road or street, the speed limit is displayed on the screen alongside of the vehicle's speed display. If you are exceeding the speed limit, the color of the vehicle speed indication changes to red. If the highway's posted speed limit has changed since the last map update, you can change the speed limit display on the unit.

Driver Alerts: The Drive 61LMT-S features audible and visual alerts to help you drive more safely and increase situation awareness. Warnings include alerts for Speed Limit Reduction, Speed Limit Exceeded, Slower Traffic, Animal Crossing, Railroad Crossing, School Zones, Red Light and Speed Cameras, and Sharp Curves. Each situation can be selected or deselected in the menu.

Where Am I?: The "Where Am I?" feature gives you instant access to important information in case of an emergency. When you touch the vehicle icon on the map screen, the "Where Am I?" feature provides the coordinates (including elevation) of your current position, plus the nearest address and intersections. There are also buttons to help you locate the nearest hospitals, police stations, and gas stations. You can also save the location for future reference.

Up Ahead: As you travel along your route, the Up Ahead feature constantly indicates the location of nearby businesses, including gas stations, restaurants, lodging, rest areas, parking, and banks/ATMs. The locations are shown as icons, some with brand logos, and when the icons are touched on the screen, details of the services are displayed, and you are given the opportunity to navigate to that address.

Last Spot: To assist you in finding your parked vehicle, the Garmin Locate feature saves your location to memory when you remove the device from the windshield mounting cradle while the device is on. You can search for your vehicle's location using the Last Spot button in the menu.

Destination Search: When the Where To? button is pressed, you can use the search tools to find your destination and plan your route. The search tools allow you to search for cities, addresses, intersections, or coordinates. The Search Bar lets you directly enter a category, brand name, address, or city name. The unit's memory stores the last 50 locations you have found so you can quickly find a previous destination.

Vehicle Icons: The unit offers your choice of nine standard icons, such as arrows, sports cars, trucks, and compact cars to represent your vehicle. The online Garmin Express offers dozens more vehicle icons that you can download for free. In addition, you can purchase icon and voice bundles that you can load to an optional microSD card.

Trip Planner: You can create and save a trip with multiple destinations using the Trip Planner. Once you have entered your destinations, you can manually set them in the order of your preference, or allow the device to calculate the most efficient route. Trip itineraries can be saved in memory for future use.

Trip Data: The Trip Data feature is a customizable tool to provide helpful statistics about your trip. Numerous data points can be selected, and three of them displayed on the main map screen. Selectable data points include: dual trip odometers (Trip A/Trip B), Direction, Current Speed, Maximum Speed, Moving Average Speed, Overall Average Speed, Stopped time, Moving Time, Total Time, Time of Day, Elevation, Location Coordinates, and GPS accuracy.

Where I've Been/Trip Log: The Where I've Been application allows you to view your previous routes and places you have stopped on the map. In addition, the device keeps a Trip Log, which is a record of the path you have traveled. The Travel History setting must be enabled in order for the Where I've Been and Trip Log features to function.

GPS Simulator: When indoors, you can activate the built-in GPS simulator and practice using the unit. This turns off the GPS receiver so it's not searching for satellites, saving battery power.

Optional Backup Camera: You can add the optional Garmin BC30 wireless backup camera to the Drive 61LMT-S, allowing you to view on the screen what's behind your vehicle when it is in reverse.

Q
Can this be upgraded to include Alaska?
[ david  May 12, 2019 ]
1 answer
A
Yes, it can. I believe Alaska is included with the Canada maps option as it is contiguous with Canadian provinces and territories rather than US states or territories. Thus, If you purchase US AND CANADA as your map default or later buy CANADA in addition to the US, you should have Alaska included as I understand the Garmin support explanations.

I'm afraid not--the Garmin Drive 61LMT-S features a 6.1" resistive (instead of capacitive) touch screen. If you would like to discuss further, please feel free to contact an Advisor directly by phone (888.955.6000) or online chat.
