Garmin DriveSmart 61LMT-S portable navigator

The DriveSmart can show you incoming texts and calls from your connected smartphone.

Nearly seven inches of screen real estate

The DriveSmart's 6.95" display boasts plenty of pixels and a backlit screen to keep the view clear and crisp in all lighting conditions. You can enjoy preloaded maps of the U.S., Canada, most of Mexico, and several Caribbean islands, along with millions of points of interest. You can add your own favorite destinations, and you can find and select businesses right on the map screen without having to go through time-wasting menus. The screen's pinch-to-zoom interface lets you scale and move the map easily for the best view. And with one tap of the screen, you can view "Up Ahead" details for services that lie ahead on your route, including restaurants, gas stations, and more.

Save time with Wi-Fi updates

Built-in Wi-Fi connectivity saves you the hassle of having to connect the device to your computer when it's time for a map or software update. You'll see a prompt on the navigator's screen when an update is available, and if you're within range of a Wi-Fi signal, you can start the download with a tap of the screen. In many cases, you'll be able to update without removing the DriveSmart from your vehicle at all.

Bluetooth and voice guidance for hands-free operation

With one spoken command, you can "wake up" the navigator to respond to your voice. You can search through menus on the screen, then input addresses and destinations without touching the screen. The Garmin will respond to your words intelligently. Built-in Bluetooth lets you sync your compatible phone to the navigator for hands-free conversations you carry on through the Garmin's integrated microphone and speaker.

Know what's up with your phone

Reduce distracted driving by avoiding the temptation to grab your phone whenever you get an incoming text or call. When your phone's paired with the DriveSmart, you'll see customizable notifications on the map screen for incoming calls, texts, calendar reminders, and select app alerts. You'll need to have the Garmin Smartphone Link app on your phone, and data charges may apply.

Let your friends track your travels

The DriveSmart also offers Garmin's LiveTrack, which provides your selected contacts a link to a web page where they can view your vehicle's location in real time. This can be helpful for concerned parents of new drivers as well.

Connect with Garmin Smartphone Link

You can download Garmin's free Smartphone Link app to your phone. Once paired, the navigator can use your phone's existing data plan to share information such as saved and recently found locations, where you parked, and your current destination. You can then use your phone to give you step-by-step directions back to your car in a large parking lot, for example, or to import destinations to your navigator from your phone.

Parking and traffic help

Live traffic updates come through the Garmin Smartphone Link app, which also gives you real-time pricing and availability on parking in nearby lots and garages as you approach your destination. You'll get coverage in most metropolitan areas. The traffic reports are free, but data charges may apply for your smartphone.

Garmin Live Services

You can also launch Garmin Live Services from the app, so you can keep informed on local weather reports, real-time photos from traffic cameras, and area gas prices. Some Garmin Live Services require a subscription. Data charges may apply for using Smartphone Link — you'll want to check with your service provider.

Stay aware with location-based driver alerts

The DriveSmart delivers GPS-based alerts for upcoming sharp curves, school zones, red-light and speed cameras, railroad and animal crossings, and more. The navigator will tell you when there's a change in the posted speed limit on major roads and give you a visual warning if you're exceeding it. It can also tell you if you're going the wrong way down a one-way street.

TripAdvisor® and Foursquare® points of interest

Foursquare gives you crowd-sourced listings of points of interest. When you stop for gas, food, lodging, or shopping, you'll see the most relevant Foursquare results at the top of the search bar, so you'll know the destination is verified by actual users. Paired up with the Smartphone Link, you'll also see helpful info such as ratings, hours, and price range displayed on the navigator's screen. And if you're a Foursquare user yourself, you can check in nearly anywhere through the navigator when it's paired with your phone.

The DriveSmart also includes TripAdvisor ratings for hotels, restaurants, and attractions which are provided by fellow travelers to this popular platform.

Spoken directions that sound familiar

Voice prompts speak the instructions to you like a friend would, using a personable, human-sounding voice to describe easy-to-see landmarks, buildings and businesses, and traffic lights, rather than streets with tiny signs that you might not see in time.

See a more realistic picture of the road ahead

You'll see 3D representations of select buildings, landmarks, and terrain aspects on the Garmin's screen, making it easier to figure out where you are. Garmin also incorporates several other helpful visual tools to keep you on the correct path:

  • Active Lane Guidance shows you colored arrows for the correct lane for an upcoming turn.
  • Bird's Eye junction view gives you a detailed look at complicated interchanges from above, to give you a better perspective.
  • photoReal junction view displays realistic images of intersections, including signs and surrounding terrain, along with colored arrows for the correct lane.

You'll see all three visual features in a split-screen with your overall route so you won't lose sight of what's further down the road. This Garmin's also compatible with the optional Garmin BC 30 wireless rear-view camera so you can add an extra layer of safety when you're backing out of your driveway.

Best and brightest I've ever had. So far it is also very accurate. The screen is huge and very easy to see. The voice command works really well and has every POI I've asked for. Like a $2000 factory built in for this price. It also has free lifetime updates where a factory built in will cost around $350 for an update. I have a Garmin back up camera connected wirelessly to it and it is clear and works well. I highly recommend this product and I always buy from Crutchfield and watch for sales.

Pros: Everything

Cons: None

Its menus are kinda clunky, but other than that it's just fine. Inputting things is kinda slow, and when a street has numbers at the start of the name it wants them put into the house number slot, which is odd and not indicated in any instructions. I very much like that I can save addresses and adjust the volume, and I do like the size of the screen. An easy-to-read screen was an important feature in choosing this model.

Love it ! The 7" display is perfectly clear. Colors are bright very easy to read, voice directions are very clear, and easy to understand in a female voice. The display is very realistic, and really is accurate within 15 feet. This is our first GPS, the instructions are easy, on the screen, only took a few minutes to put location and destination in and your ready to go.

Pros: Simple to use. Great clear color realistic display. Great price, high quality GPS.

Cons: Absolutely none.

Full-Featured GPS

Jason from Freehold, NJ on 8/7/2018

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

All I can say is that this GPS is awesome! It is packed full of features. Notifies you of upcoming curves, drop in speed limit, animal crossings just to name a few. The voice command works very well, as long as there is not a lot of background noise. I have used it for more than a week now and on several out of town trips and it has worked beautifully. I also use this unit as my in-car hands free bluetooth speaker for phone calls as well. I have been told on more than one occasion that my car's built-in bluetooth call system is hard to hear me speaking. Now I am told my calls are 100% better and a lot more clear and they can understand me perfectly. If I had one gripe about this GPS, it would be that the icons for POI's are a little big and sometimes when you have a few of them in one area, it is hard to read the map. I don't really think it's worth taking a star away but it would be nice if you could adjust the size of the icons on screen. I would recommend this GPS to anyone looking for a higher end unit that is chock full of features at a decent price point.

This is my first stand alone GPS. Feels lacking compared to gmaps. However I love the fact it's not in my phone. Always there showing the way even if my phone fell on the floor or is too hot since it's been on the dash, etc. Wish you could force it to use main roads instead of "shortest route" which seems to include rabbit trails sometimes. Took some time to accept my home wifi connection for download. After download, still doesn't know about closed gas stations that have been closed for easily a decade. Hey Garmin, partner with Gasbuddy already... Screen is crisp and bright and you can see it with polarized sunglasses. User interface ok, nothing stellar. Must use the included USB cable to link to a computer to download new icons and voices.

Great unit and a significant upgrade from the 61LM that Crutchfield graciously allowed me to exchange for this unit. Voice-activated navigation seems to work for addresses and business names, which is very handy. The unit has WiFi, so you don't need to tether it to a PC to update maps and firmware. As others have noted, I believe the traffic feed is from a phone, not FM or satellite like older Garmin units but, if you don't have cell coverage, you probably don't have traffic :-)

Pros: Voice-activated input; WiFi for software updates; screen size

Cons: Wish it came with a case

Garmin DriveSmart 61LMT-S

Ben from Salt Lake City, UT on 6/20/2018

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

This is a recent purchase. I used it when taking a trip from Salt Lake City to Boise and back. I also used it to find a wedding location while in Boise. It got me to where I needed to go. I have not used the voice command option to program routes. I still need to experiment with that feature. I like the large screen. I was able to see the screen clearly, even in bright sunlight, when I was having a difficult time seeing the digital info on my dashboard. So far, I am happy with my GPS and I was very happy with Crutchfield's service and prompt free delivery. I would have given the purchase 5 stars except for one glitch with the GPS that i will mention in the cons.

Pros: Very nice GPS. I am happy with my purchase.

Cons: When returning from Boise to Salt Lake City, I had to add a couple of intermediate locations in order to get the GPS to program the shortest route. I learned a valuable lesson about programing this GPS for a long trip from that experience.

saved me a lot vs. a new stereo upgrade on my 2008 f550 to get blue tooth and gps, great deal

Pros: my f550 had no gps or blue tooth, i now have both with no $400 replacement stereo to install, love it and half the price vs. stereo upgrade option for my 2008 ford

Cons: would have been nice to have a mounting adhesive plate for suction cup as others ive bought. this truck has no smooth surfaces other than windshield so i had to improvise to mount it, but no disappointment otherwise

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Have only used this GPS about a week (had to upload previous Garmin data to new one). The jury is still out.

Pros: - High-definition, bright screen. Large is good but obstructs view a bit and can't be carried. - Very intuitive voice commands. EXCEPT detour voice command does not allow options of road and distance (that are available if you use touch-screen options)

Cons: - Favorites display as huge red hearts with no description. Near home, map fills up with hearts that obscure my route and I can't tell what they are without clicking on them. Prefer old Garmin that had a point with a description that didn't distract from the route. Garmin, please offer the user the option of reducing the size of the heart with a truncated description. I'm not the only one with this complaint. - Linking Samsung Android phone provides nothing after installing Smartphone Link to phone. Unit says it has no Google account, which of course it does, because you can't buy the phone (from Verizon) without it. Maybe Google wants access to my contacts and e-mails which I won't allow -- who knows? - User manual doesn't get into details to be useful. - No pedestrian mode but si

I upgraded from the Garmin 2797 and this new one is very similar. same 7" screen but with better graphics. The screen is also just like a smartphone. you can scroll and zoom with your finger. The 2797 you had to use arrows. Only thing is the traffic comes from pairing with a smartphone using an app. The traffic receiver cord is sold separately if you dont want to use a smartphone link-up. Bright screen. easy to use. good GPS

Crutchfield customer from Delmar, NY on 4/4/2018

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Overall it does the basics of a GPS very well. The picture is great, the voice directions are fine, the wireless update feature is fantastic, the overall ease of use is good. However, once you connect a phone to it (to get live traffic) it automatically shows your texts and every push notification you receive. It also tries to pick up phone calls. While the ability to see texts is nice, it doesn't seem possible to stop it from showing random push notifications and receiving phone calls. My vehicle already has built in Bluetooth for making and receiving phone calls so trying to fight the Garmin to not pick them up is a bit annoying.

Pros: Wireless updates Large screen Intuitive design

Cons: Doesn't understand location names very well Inability to separate it from showing text messages vs push notifications

Outstanding GPS. Great interface with a phone application "SmartPhone Link" to input data to the GPS. It is a start and no doubt improve in the future. Somewhat hard to understand how that works and the relationship with various specialty Garmin cables. I believe Garmin could do a better job with illustrations. Garmin has made updates easier. Anyone having used Garmin Aviation updates in the past will understand. The phone system works very good. Clear and easy voice exchange. A lot of options for the money!

Pros: Better than a car system

Cons: Takes a bit to understand all the interfaces to use the best features.

No traffic receiver power cord anymore . In order to use traffic you need to use your cell phone and data plan in order for the GPS to be able to provide live traffic reports . More things to manage just to receive traffic info . Other than this , normal ease of use with a large screen.

Cons: Live traffic availability without cell phone application

This is a big GPS, I have no problem mounting this in my SUV, the mounting in my BMW convertible is just not possible. The voice navigating instructions are clear and concise. As others have reported it doesn't always understand my voice instructions, my main reason for buying this model. The screen is bright and very easy to read. Still getting to know this model, updates will follow

Pros: Large Screen, Bright Display, Good Clear Directional Voice, A Lot Of On Screen Info.

Cons: Large Screen, Understanding My Voice Instructions

Love the voice command and WiFi

Bruce from Columbia, TN on 12/7/2017

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I upgraded from an older Garmin because the DriveSmart had voice commands, WiFi and better screen resolution than my older Garmin. The screen is large and very easy to see and the voice commands work very well. The WiFi upgrades worked very well and took less time to upgrade the maps. I purchased a wall charger so the battery would not die while upgrading. The only reason why I did not get this unit a 5 star is because the traffic alerts do not work very well. I have been is several traffic jams and the DriveSmart did not warn me of these traffic situations. I was hoping the traffic alerts would help since I do not like having to check google maps for traffic situations while I'm driving.

Pros: Great screen resolution, wiFi updates and voice commands.

Cons: Poor traffic alert updates.

I'm upgrading from an older Nuvi 2555 so I can add a backup camera to our older car. I would have given the Drive Smart five stars if it came with a traffic antenna. The description should be clearer that the traffic antenna is NOT INCLUDED. A friend of mine just ordered the much cheaper Drive 50LMT and it comes with a traffic antenna. Luckily, the BC30 backup camera provided a traffic/receiver charger cord. I love the larger very responsive screen. The Wi-Fi update feature worked great, but you need to plug it in to a USB charger since it only has a one hour battery life. I haven't been on a long enough trip yet to try out all the feature, but they look promising. I transferred over my Favorites from my Nuvi using Garmin Express. It worked flawlessly. Once they were in the Drive Smart, I cleaned up the titles and categories-this was something I wouldn't attempt in the Nuvi because it was so slow in comparison. I then wiped the Nuvi and transferred the more organized set of favorites back. I plan to keep the Nuvi in my newer vehicle, which has a gps, but we like the Garmin much better. Some folks complained about the yellow warning bar that comes up across the top of the screen, but you can select which warnings you want to receive, or none. By the way, the backup camera worked great with this unit. I'm sure the larger, high resolution screen contributed to it's success.

Pros: Large responsive high resolution screen

Cons: Does not come with traffic antenna charger

Love it. Screen size is a perfect match with my 68 year old eyes. I can read it in full sun even when wearing polarized sunglasses. The sensitivity of the touch screen is very good. The sound is clear and connects well with my iPhone 5. I have driven with it for about 15 hours and look forward to using more of the options it offers.

Purchased this for the Bluetooth hands free phone options. Calls cut out nonstop. Cannot hear other person on the device. Constantly connecting and disconnecting from the phone. Would not recommend. Also the customer service from crutchfield is a zero. I've contacted them twice trying to return the item and they haven't responded. It's almost been a full week with no response. Very disappointed. Don't waste your money.

This is my fourth Garmin GPS. Purchased two weeks ago. I am having doubts about keeping it because of two fundamental issues. First, the unit often fails to power up even with a full charge. Second, the navigation accuracy is suspect. For example, the unit sent me to a location that was miles from the desired location AND in the wrong direction. I tried both voice and manual search commands. I decided to initiate a system reset to see if the problem still exists. This has never been a problem with previous Garmin devices.

Perfect for my needs . . . as all Garmins it is very simple to operate and provides a useful digital speedometer. On a trip to Toledo, OH from Washington, DC, I noticed the GPS reported speed limit was in error -- but always on the low side of the posted permitted speed. I am planning to buy another unit to keep in my other car.

Disappointing

I think I may have received a defective device. During our trips to Disneyland this unit would go into Diagnostic mode and become unresponsive. Had to cycle the power, then once the power come on, the touch screen become in-responsive. Using app on iPhone to utilize traffic, but this feature does no work even the phone is still connected via Bluetooth. Once we finally get it going, the map would switch to routing text and wouldn't get out from it. We had to use our cellphone for navigation entire time in LA area. We are extremely disappointed with this. Not so smartdriving device after all. Hopefully Donna from Crutchfield is able to resolve this and I will change the star once it is resolved.

Pros: Non

Cons: -Possibly defective unit hoping Crutchfield would replace this for free.

My wife and I are in Tennessee at this time and have been using this GPS to find and look at property...the screen is large and is easy to see the details of the directions and/or other options that you can use to find other places or things to do. Sound is very clear and the pop up turn by turn details are great when a change of routes or up coming sharp turns, schools and other warning that you can customize. The hands free blue tooth works better than I though and is easy to pair with the phone. The battery does not last long if you were to use it with out the power cord. The only complaint that I can come up with, and I knew this when I purchased it...is the large screen takes up window space and hinders some visibility...especially smaller windshields.

Pros: Great graphics, information and GPS options, great blue tooth phone pairing. Satellite signals works great in tree covered roads and mountains areas.

Cons: Be aware the large screen takes up some valuable window visibility on smaller windshields.

Great GPS device, but lacking Bluetooth robust features

This is really a good product! I am pleased that I can update the maps and software via Wi-Fi. It saves one a lot of time and memory space on his or her local computer drive. The bluetooth features are lacking in that I was unable to pair my Garmin 61 LMT -S GPS device with my dash Pioneer AVH_4100 system. It will not pair with dash receiver, as I was hoping to bring the audio from the GPS device to the dash system via Bluetooth. I received a message on the GPS device that indicates that the Pioneer dash AVH-4100 is not compatible with the GPS device. The smartphone app (Smartlink) is useless, and one has to pay for some of the subscriptions. This app is certainly not special in any way. The SD card is not included in the box. There is not a case for the GPS device in the box,

Don't do reviews, no time. But this is a great product. Used a Garmin for the workplace for the last 10+ years. Had to put it to sleep.. Wow, what an improvement, I never new what I was missing. So many new features and fast. I use the old route feature and now it's called trip planner. It is improved, smooth and fast. Screen is bright and large. If you are still on your old Garmin, it's time for an upgrade! What are you waiting for?

Pros: Huge Screen Bright Smooth Many added features from the old Love the new trip planner, can skip destinations go right to the needed one Maps are accurate

Cons: One feature that I use that I can't find is showing the lots on the map like Google Maps does. Not a game changer. Other then that, no Cons.

Just returned from a long road trip and was able to compare the 61LMT-S with Google Maps and Nav on my Nexus 6P. The large display of the Garmin is a plus. As far as depiction of nav information and mapping, I preferred the Google Nav display. The Garmin app that you put on your phone that connects to the 61LMT-S is not very user friendly and didn't really offer me much. The size of the 61LMT-S is a big plus as are free updates with included POI's. As far as depiction of navigational info, my choice would be Google Nav. A perfect solution would be if you could "cast" the Google Nav info on your phone to the 61LMT-S.

General Features

Overview: The Garmin DriveSmart 61LMT-S, part of the 2017 Garmin Drive series, is a portable GPS navigation device that provides automatic routing and turn-by-turn voice directions. The unit receives data from overhead global positioning satellites, not cellular signals, for reliable navigation directions. Garmin DriveSmart devices include driver awareness alerts for upcoming hazards such as sharp curves, railroad crossings, school zones, and speed limit changes. It can also provide a fatigue warning after you drive a long period of time without a significant break. The DriveSmart series also includes Bluetooth hands-free calling, access to live services through the SmartLink app, and voice-activated navigation. The DriveSmart 61LMT-S features free Lifetime Map Updates and Lifetime Traffic Avoidance.

6.95" Capacitive-Touchscreen LCD: The DriveSmart 61LMT-S features a 6.95" (diagonal, edge-to-edge), dual-orientation, color TFT capacitive-touchscreen LCD with a resolution of 1024 x 600 pixels. The screen can be viewed in either landscape or portrait orientation, and can be switched in the Settings Menu. The glass, capacitive-touch screen acts like your smartphone display, allowing you to use a pinching action to zoom in or out of the maps.

Wi-Fi: The DriveSmart 61LMT-S makes it easy to receive software and map updates with its built-in Wi-Fi. When connected to your home network, you'll be notified when a map or software update is available.

Bluetooth: The DriveSmart 61LMT-S has built-in Bluetooth technology, which allows you to sync the unit with a Bluetooth-enabled device for hands-free calling through its integrated microphone and speaker. You can make and receive phone calls as long as the devices are within 33 feet and paired.

Smartphone Link: Smartphone Link is a phone application that allows the device to download live data using your phone's data connection, and transferring the data wirelessly via Bluetooth. The free Garmin Smartphone Link app provides access to Garmin Live Services, which includes free and subscription-based plans for viewing traffic data, photoLive traffic cameras, weather, dynamic parking, and fuel prices. Garmin Smartphone Link is available for iPhone in the App Store (iOS 9.3 and later) and for Android in the Google Play store (Android 4.0.3 and up).

Smartwatch Compatibility: The DriveSmart 61LMT-S can be paired to your Garmin smartwatch (select fēnix, Forerunner, and vívofit models with Connect IQ) for extending navigation features, receiving notifications and driver warnings, and locating your car in a parking lot.

Smart Notifications: When connected via the Smartphone Link, the DriveSmart 61LMT-S will display calls, texts, and other notifications from your Android or iPhone. This allows you to answer your phone, or read or hear your messages without having to pick up your phone.

Voice-activated Navigation: You can use your voice to activate and operate the DriveSmart 61LMT-S. Voice Command allows you to use the device by speaking words and commands and following the voice prompts. After speaking a predetermined Wakeup Phrase, you can enter the names and/or address of popular, well-known locations. If necessary, you can disable voice prompts without muting the device, so you'll still hear the audible directions as you travel.

Preloaded Maps: The DriveSmart 61LMT-S contains NAVTEQ's City Navigator NT North America with detailed road maps of the United States (including Alaska and Hawaii), Canada, and Mexico, plus Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Bahamas (New Providence Island and Grand Bahama), French Guiana, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Saint Barthélemy, and Jamaica.

Note: Optional maps are available for this device via microSD card, download directly from Garmin.com.

nüMaps Guarantee: If you register your device on Garmin's website within 90 days of acquiring satellites while driving, you can check to see if a free map update is available. You must be able to connect your device via a high-speed internet connection in order to check the loaded map version and download the map update.

microSD Card Slot: The DriveSmart 61LMT-S has a microSD card slot so you can store and use optional maps (available from Garmin), or download custom voices and vehicles from the Garmin Garage.

Universal Mount: The DriveSmart 61LMT-S features a universal mount that holds the unit securely in place, but can be easily removed. The circular Universal Bracket mount clips into the socket on the back of the unit, and fits the ball mount found on Garmin windshield and dash mounts.

Power Requirements: The Garmin DriveSmart 61LMT-S is powered by a built-in Lithium-Ion battery, which will provide up to 1 hour of use when fully charged. The unit comes with a 12-volt car charger for powering and charging the unit while you travel. The unit can be powered by your computer when it is connected via the supplied mini-B USB cable.

Compatibility: You can connect the unit to your computer with the supplied mini-B USB cable for downloading map updates, custom POIs, voices, and vehicles. The DriveSmart 61LMT-S is compatible with Windows XP or newer and Mac OS X 10.4 or later.

Navigation Features

Free Lifetime Map Updates: The DriveSmart 61LMT-S offers free lifetime map updates (of the preloaded map software) so you'll always have the most up-to-date maps, POIs, and navigation information. Map updates are available for download up to 4 times a year with no subscription or update fees and no expiration dates. Free Lifetime Map Updates are subject to Terms & Conditions.

Live Traffic: Live Traffic helps you avoid traffic tie-ups that may delay your travel. Here (formerly NAVTEQ) collects, processes, and distributes real-time traffic conditions. Live Traffic requires the use of a Bluetooth-enabled smartphone loaded with the Garmin Smartphone Link app. Traffic data is refreshed every 60 seconds, with more than 1000 messages received with every update. Updates appear to the side of the map, so your driving map remains onscreen at all times. The updates can give you details about the situation, including the estimated length of the delay. Free Lifetime Live Traffic requires no subscription or activation, and is subject to Terms & Conditions.

Note: Traffic updates are available in approximately 124 markets throughout the U.S. and Canada. Location-relevant pop-up ads and coupons may be received when traffic is enabled on the unit.

Live Parking / LiveTrack: In addition to Live Traffic, the Smartphone Link app enables the use of Live Parking and LiveTrack on your DriveSmart 61LMT-S. Live Parking from Parkopedia.com shows you helpful parking information, including pricing and availability trends for on-street public parking. LiveTrack lets you share your location to your friends so they can track your whereabouts.

POIs with TripAdvisor: The built-in maps include millions of Points of Interest (POIs) such as hotels, restaurants, gas stations, attractions, and ATMs. Many of the listings show ratings from TripAdvisor, the world's largest travel site. Additional search information sourced from Foresquare. In addition, you can download additional points of interest and add them to the unit's memory (Custom POIs). The free POI Loader software can be downloaded from the Garmin website to assist you in creating Custom POIs.

Map View Options: You can choose from a 3D map view or two 2D map views (Track Up or North Up) as you navigate to your destination.

Garmin Real Directions: The DriveSmart 61LMT-S announces your upcoming maneuvers with a clear spoken voice. Using Garmin Real Directions, the spoken turn-by-turn directions utilize traffic lights and recognizable landmarks to guide you. For example, the unit uses phrases such as "Turn left at the traffic light" or "Turn right at the gas station."

Active Lane Guidance: Active Lane Guidance with voice prompts lets you know in advance which lane you should to be in to make an upcoming turn. In select metropolitan areas, the DriveSmart 61LMT-S will enter split screen mode to display a realistic depiction of the junction, complete with road signs and brightly-colored arrows to indicate the proper lane for navigation.

Speed Limits: As you travel along a major road or street, the speed limit is displayed on the screen alongside of the vehicle's speed display. If you are exceeding the speed limit, the color of the vehicle speed indication changes to red. If the highway's posted speed limit has changed since the last map update, you can change the speed limit display on the unit.

Driver Alerts: The DriveSmart 61LMT-S features audible and visual alerts to help you drive more safely and increase situation awareness. Warnings include alerts for Speed Limit Reduction, Speed Limit Exceeded, Slower Traffic, Animal Crossing, Railroad Crossing, School Zones, Red Light and Speed Cameras, and Sharp Curves. Each situation can be selected or deselected in the menu.

Where Am I?: The "Where Am I?" feature gives you instant access to important information in case of an emergency. When you touch the vehicle icon on the map screen, the "Where Am I?" feature provides the coordinates (including elevation) of your current position, plus the nearest address and intersections. There are also buttons to help you locate the nearest hospitals, police stations, and gas stations. You can also save the location for future reference.

Up Ahead: As you travel along your route, the Up Ahead feature constantly indicates the location of nearby businesses, including gas stations, restaurants, lodging, rest areas, parking, and banks/ATMs. The locations are shown as icons, some with brand logos, and when the icons are touched on the screen, details of the services are displayed, and you are given the opportunity to navigate to that address.

Last Spot: To assist you in finding your parked vehicle, the Garmin Locate feature saves your location to memory when you remove the device from the windshield mounting cradle while the device is on. You can search for your vehicle's location using the Last Spot button in the menu.

Destination Search: When the Where To? button is pressed, you can use the search tools to find your destination and plan your route. The search tools allow you to search for cities, addresses, intersections, or coordinates. The Search Bar lets you directly enter a category, brand name, address, or city name. The unit's memory stores the last 50 locations you have found so you can quickly find a previous destination.

Vehicle Icons: The unit offers your choice of nine standard icons, such as arrows, sports cars, trucks, and compact cars to represent your vehicle. The online Garmin Express offers dozens more vehicle icons that you can download for free. In addition, you can purchase icon and voice bundles that you can load to an optional microSD card.

Trip Planner: You can create and save a trip with multiple destinations using the Trip Planner. Once you have entered your destinations, you can manually set them in the order of your preference, or allow the device to calculate the most efficient route. Trip itineraries can be saved in memory for future use.

Trip Data: The Trip Data feature is a customizable tool to provide helpful statistics about your trip. Numerous data points can be selected, and three of them displayed on the main map screen. Selectable data points include: dual trip odometers (Trip A/Trip B), Direction, Current Speed, Maximum Speed, Moving Average Speed, Overall Average Speed, Stopped time, Moving Time, Total Time, Time of Day, Elevation, Location Coordinates, and GPS accuracy.

Where I've Been/Trip Log: The Where I've Been application allows you to view your previous routes and places you have stopped on the map. In addition, the device keeps a Trip Log, which is a record of the path you have traveled. The Travel History setting must be enabled in order for the Where I've Been and Trip Log features to function.

GPS Simulator: When indoors, you can activate the built-in GPS simulator and practice using the unit. This turns off the GPS receiver so it's not searching for satellites, saving battery power.

Optional Backup Camera: You can add the optional Garmin BC30 wireless backup camera to the DriveSmart 61LMT-S, allowing you to view on the screen what's behind your vehicle when it is in reverse.

If you want to use the live traffic feature without you smart phone you need to purchase a Garmin GTM 60 HD Traffic Receiver plug. They used to come with older models of Garmin devices but now are sold separately. I use one from an old device and it works perfectly.
