About the Garmin Edge Explore
Ride for fun
Ride for fun
Not all of us are looking to get a leg up on our fellow riders when we get on a bike, so a cycling computer with advanced training features may be overkill. For those of us who want an accurate and reliable way to see where we are, where we're going, and what we've done, Garmin has created the Edge Explore. This GPS cycling computer's preloaded Garmin Cycle Map
Learn the best routes
Popularity Routing taps into the data gathered by Garmin Connect to find the routes and trails that your fellow riders have grown to love. When you're on a group ride, you can keep tabs on the other riders with GroupTrack — and even use rider-to-rider messaging to let them know your status.
Your loved ones will never worry about you when you have Edge Explore and your smartphone. Pair with your phone and features like live tracking and social media sharing will keep them in the loop. If the worst happens, Incident Detection will notify your contacts if it detects a possible crash. When your ride is done, Edge Explore will automatically transfer ride data to your smartphone, so you can share the details of your rambles with your circle of friends immediately.
Edge Explore works the free apps and widgets you'll find at their Connect IQ™ store. You can track the weather with apps like AccuWeather MinuteCast , or plan your rides on sites like Strava and follow uploaded directions.
Edge Explore is compatible with Garmin's Varia™ cycling lights and sensors, including their smart bike lights and rearview radar system. Add these systems and you'll not only be more visible to motorists, you'll know when cars are overtaking you with a glance at the screen of your computer.

More details on the Garmin Edge Explore
Overview: The Garmin Edge Explore is an easy-to-use GPS-enabled bicycle computer with connected features, such as live tracking, social media sharing, weather, and the ability to send and receive courses. It is compatible with Garmin Varia cycling awareness devices. The Edge Explore is waterproof (IPX7 rated), and comes with two standard handlebar mounts so you can mount it on multiple bikes. The device measures 2-3/16" x 4-1/16" x 7/8" (WxHxD) and weighs 4.1 ounces.
Touchscreen Display: The Edge Explore has a bright, 3" easy-to-read, color touchscreen display (1.5"W x 2.6"H), with a display resolution of 240 x 400 pixels. You can maneuver through the menus, and make selections by touching the display. The display will show your chosen route, elapsed time, speed, distance, time of day, and calories burned (if applicable).
Garmin Cycle Map: The Edge Explore comes preloaded with Garmin's Cycle Map, which provides you with turn-by-turn navigation. With built-in GPS, the device will alert you of upcoming turns, and can guide you back to the route, if you get off course. As you ride, Trendline popularity routing lets you see the most popular on- and off-road routes that are most traveled by cyclists. If training indoors, you can turn off the GPS receiver to save battery power.
Smartphone Compatible: You can wirelessly link your device to a smartphone (Android 4.4 and up / iOS 9.0 or later) using the Garmin Connect Mobile app. While connected, you gain connected features, including LiveTrack and GroupTrack, smart notifications, messaging between riders, and incident detection. At the end of your ride, you can transfer the ride data directly to your phone via Bluetooth. Using the app, you can analyze the details of your ride, or share it with others. You can also search out courses and workouts stored at Garmin Connect, download them to your smartphone, and send them to your Edge Explore wirelessly. Real-time weather updates and alerts can be sent from your smartphone to your device.
LiveTrack/GroupTrack: LiveTrack allows your friends and family to follow your races and training activities in real time. You can invite your followers via email or social media to view your live data on the Garmin Connect tracking page. Once they see your invitation, they can click to follow your progress on a map and see your stats. If you're riding in a group, you can use GroupTrack to keep tabs on your riding companions (up to 50). The location of each connected rider in your group can be displayed, along with their current speed and their distance from you. Prewritten messages can be sent to the members of your group from your Edge bike computer to theirs.
Waterproof: The Edge Explore is waterproof to IEC Standard 60529 IPX7. It can withstand immersion in 1 meter of water for up to 30 minutes. The casing is totally sealed, including the front- and side-mounted keys, and the USB port has a water-resistant cover to prevent corrosion.
ANT+: ANT+ is a wireless technology that allows certain accessories to communicate with the Edge Explore. ANT+ sensors generally work within 10 feet of the unit. In addition, an increasing number of health clubs and fitness centers have ANT+ compatible equipment in their facilities, so you can use the same accessories separate from your device. Compatible Garmin ANT+ accessories include:
- Heart Rate Monitor: When the Edge Explore is paired with the optional Premium Heart Rate Monitor, the unit tracks your heart beats per minute and calculates your calorie consumption as you train. You can train in a certain heart rate zone to improve your fitness level or compare your pace and heart rate to past performances.
- Speed and Cadence Sensors: Optional Speed and Cadence Sensors measure your speed and pedaling strokes per minute.
Varia Bike Radar/Lights: Garmin Explore Edge is compatible with Varia smart bike lights and rear view radar to help improve your situational awareness. Varia Rearview Radar provides on-screen alerts when it detects vehicles approaching from behind. Varia Smart headlights and tail lights integrate with the Edge Explore and change intensity with your speed.
Auto Pause: The built-in timer will pause automatically when it detects you're not moving. The timer will restart when you resume your ride.
Auto Lap: The Auto Lap feature lets you automatically mark the lap at a specific position. This helps you compare your performance over different parts of a ride (i.e. a long climb or training sprints). You can also use Auto Lap to mark laps at a specific distance.
Ride Data Storage: The Edge Explore built-in 16 GB memory stores up to 200 hours of your ride data until it can be uploaded to your Garmin Connect account. The unit not only has an odometer to keep track of your mileage, but includes data on your last ride, longest ride, fastest ride, and all rides.
User Profile: The Edge Explore allows you to enter data about yourself to create a User Profile. This data (gender, birth year, weight, and height) is used to calculate accurate ride data.
Garmin Connect: Free web-based Garmin Connect software lets you store your workout data for comprehensive analysis. Garmin Connect is used by cyclists worldwide, and presents your data in an easily understood manner, with maps, reports, and suggested activities. You can create fitness goals and send them to your device. As you complete activities toward your goals, they are tracked on both the device and on Garmin Connect.
Courses: The Edge Explore can save your ride data as you train. From that saved data, you can use Garmin Connect software to create courses that you can follow in the future. Each time you follow the course, the unit will compare your time to previous rides, or to other riders, and let you set performance goals. As you ride along the course, the display will indicate distance and time to upcoming maneuvers.
USB Port: A Micro USB port is provided on the back of the unit for charging and connecting to your computer. A water-resistant cap keeps moisture out.
Power Requirements: The unit is powered by a built-in Lithium-Ion battery. It charges via the included USB cable when connected to your computer. The battery charge level is expressed as a percentage on the display. Typical battery life for the device is approximately 12 hours.
Optional Power Pack: The Garmin Charge Power Pack is an external battery that plugs directly into the Edge Explore to give you up to 24 hours of additional battery life. The power pack is designed to attach to the under side of the Flush Out-Front mount or other handlebar mounts. It has five electrical contacts that can match up with the contacts on the bottom of the Edge Explore to power the device without a cable.
Mounting: The Edge Explore can be mounted to your bicycle's handlebars or stem using the included standard "quarter-turn" mounts. Two sizes of rubber mounting bands are included for best fit. Two complete mounts are included to allow you to use the unit on multiple bikes.
