Weather and satellite radio, too

The GXM 53 connects to the Garmin Marine Network and sends your chartplotter all the weather news you need. An Ethernet connection means you get high-bandwidth data transfer through a single cable, and you can also access your favorite SiriusXM satellite radio stations (subscription required).

Whether you choose to mount it on a surface or on a pole, the GXM 53 is easy to install on your boat. And if you have an older GXM 52 model, upgrading is easy, since they use the same mount.

Features

Overview: The Garmin GXM 53 is a receiver/antenna for SiriusXM Satellite Radio and Weather that can be connected compatible Garmin chartplotters. The receiver/antenna connects to the Garmin Marine Network for delivering highly detailed weather information, including NEXRAD, lightning, water temperatures, wind/wave conditions, and forecast data. You can also receive SiriusXM audio stations, if your subscription allows. The GXM 53 comes with pole and surface mounts, power and audio module, and additional cable.

Compatibility: The GXM 53 is fully compatible with GPSMAP 8400/8600, GPSMAP 8000, GPSMAP 7400/7600, GPSMAP 7x2/9x2, and GPSMAP 10x2/12x2 chartplotter and chartplotter/sonar combinations. The complete list (as of November 2017) of compatible Garmin devices is as follows:

  • GPSMAP 527xs, 547, 547xs
  • GPSMAP 722, 722xs, 741, 741xs, 742, 742xs

Installation: The GXM 53 comes with a pole mount and a surface mount bracket. The pole mount allows you to attach the antenna to a standard 1" OD, 14 threads-per-inch, pipe-threaded pole. The pole mount allows you to route the cable outside of the pole or through it. The surface mount requires a triangular jigsaw-cut hole in the mounting surface for routing the wires. A Surface Mount template is included. Both mounts allow the antenna to twist-fit into the bracket, which is then secured with the two included M3 x 8mm set screws. A 1.5mm Allen wrench (not included) is required to tighten/loosen the set screws.

Connections: The GXM 53 comes with a power/audio module with three 6.5' cables for power (bare wire), antenna (9-pin), and audio (stereo RCA). A 20' antenna extension cable is also included. The antenna cable connects to the chartplotter via an Ethernet connection (RJ45). The power module (5" x 2" x 1.5") will need to be surface mounted with the included hardware, or otherwise secured.

Customer Q&A

Q
Crutchfield asked: Why did you buy this?
A
I was told this antenna is compatible with my Garmin GPSMap 1040xs, We sometimes travel in locations where radio reception is sporadic at best, so having a weather module integrated into the GPS unit is essential. [ Kyle  May 24, 2018 ]

Q
Fusion M-AV755, the Garmin 741XS, The Garmin GXM 53 and the SiriusXM SVX 300 I am planing on installing the Fusion M-AV755 Marine Radio in my Sea Ray 270 which I want to have SiriusXM radio capability as well. I have the Garmin 741XS Chartplotter which will want to connect via the NMEA 2000 network so I can have my Fusion radio functionality on my Garmin MFD. I am considering geting the Garmin GXM 53 antenna for weather information. How is the GXM 53 for siriusXM and how does the GXM 53 compare to the SiriusXM Tuner SXV300. Do I need both the GXM 53 and the SXV300? Im a tad condused at this jucture. Thank you.

A
Th Garmin GXM53 is both the SiriusXM receiver and antenna in a single unit so, you do not need the SXV300V1 tuner when using the GXM53 with a compatible Garmin Chartplotter (the 741xs is compatible). The GXM53 is made specifically for marine installations and adds the weather information from the Garmin Marine Network so, it's a much better option than the SXV300V1.
