Overview

Our take on the Garmin Vivofit® 4

Counting steps is a great way to get moving and improve your fitness. But if you're like me and enjoy variety in your workouts, Garmin's vivofit 4 activity tracker is with you for the long haul. Garmin's Move IQ detects different types of activities and records them automatically. Walking, running, swimming, biking, using an elliptical — they're all recorded as distinct activities, and automatically uploaded to Garmin Connect. When you've finished your day, a couple swipes of your phone's touchscreen and you'll have an accurate record of all you're doing to improve your health.

Garmin Connect does more than just log your data. You can use it to join challenges or start competitions with your friends or your kids. Compete for virtual badges or just for bragging rights — it's a great motivator.

Your 24/7 companion

vivofit 4's color display keeps you in the loop, while the one-year battery life means no downtime for charging. Customize the display with different color themes, phrases, and watch faces, or swap bands for a different look. vivofit 4 is highly water-resistant too, so you can wear it swimming or in the shower.

Keep moving

The activity timer lets you record the duration of a walk, run, bike ride, or other activity. Even if you're deskbound, vivofit 4 is ready to help. The move bar provides a visual reminder to get up from your seat and take a walk — a simple strategy that pays big health dividends. Sit too long and a red bar appears, and it even provides an audible reminder if you want.

great product! same reliability as original just with better features and more reliable auto sync

Cons:

Our 8-year-old loves it

Scot from Lexington, KY on 6/22/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

When the Vivofit Jr. finally died, our 8-year-old son wanted a replacement. He was not enamored with the 'kiddie' Star Wars or Marvel watches. He selected the Vivofit 4 as a replacement, and has been very pleased.

Pros: simple user interface

Cons: typical for a wrist-worn tracker -- it cannot detect cycling

Main feature simply does not work

Luke from Atlanta, GA on 6/17/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The big feature here is Move IQ - the ability to identify what sort of activity you are doing. It just does not work! It gets walking right sometimes, and the step count seems like it may be accurate, but it says you are swimming when you are not, and thinks you're walking when you are swimming. It showed an extended elliptical session in the middle of a long walk; no, there is no elliptical machine on the trail in the park! What we have here is a glorified pedometer that keeps track of exercise which you may or may not have actually performed. That is, if you can get it to sync with your phone at all. Usually a reboot of the phone is required for it to even recognize the VF4. I have found zero reviews online saying Move IQ works. Here's one more FAIL.

Pros: Does not require recharging. Waterproof.

Cons: Does not provide ANY reliable workout information. Main feature - Move IQ - fails altogether. Effectively just a pedometer.

Features

Overview: The Garmin vívofit 4 is a water-resistant activity tracker that helps you keep track of and reach your personal fitness goals. The slender, lightweight device is worn on the wrist, and displays your steps, calories burned, and distances traveled, and alerts you when you've reached your daily goal. It can even monitor your sleep. The vívofit 4 weighs less than an ounce, comes in a choice of colors and sizes.

Garmin Connect: The vívofit 4 has built-in Bluetooth Smart technology so you can automatically pair it to your smartphone or mobile device. You can also use an optional wireless USB ANT+ stick to connect the device to your home computer. With the Garmin Connect app on your smartphone or computer, you can keep track of your activities, your daily goals, the calories you've burned, and help motivate you to keep active. You can also share your activities and goals with your friends on social media. The vívofit 4 settings are configured on Garmin Connect, including Time Format (12-hour or 24-hour), Measurement Units (miles or kilometers), Visible Screens, and Auto Goal. Garmin Connect for your home computer is compatible with Windows 7 SP1 and newer and Mac OS 10.10 or newer. Garmin Connect Mobile works with Bluetooth Smart-compatible devices, including Apple iPhone/iPad/iPod touch running iOS 9.0 and above, and select Android devices (version varies with device).

Wrist Band: This vívofit 4 comes with a small-medium wrist band (for wrist circumferences between 4.8" and 7.4"). A version of the device with a large wrist band (5.83" to 8.46" wrist circumference) is available. The vívofit 4 should be worn all day to monitor your activities, and all night if you wish to monitor your sleep.

Activities: The Garmin vívofit 4 keeps track of your activity level throughout the day and displays the results on the 0.43" x 0.43", always-on liquid crystal display with a resolution of 88 x 88 pixels. You can view at a glance your daily step count and the percentage of your daily step goal, the distance you have traveled, the number of calories you have burned, the time of day, your current heart rate, and your heart rate zone. If Auto Goal is enabled, the device will adjust your daily step goal up or down depending upon your previous step totals. If worn at night, the vívofit 4 monitors your rest, including total hours of sleep, sleep levels, periods of movement, and periods of restful sleep. The vívofit 4's memory stores up to 4 weeks of 24/7 activity data, (less if the heart rate monitor is used). You should sync the device with your phone or home computer periodically to clear the memory.

Move IQ: The vívofit 4's Move IQ technology recognizes from your movements the different activities you perform. Whether you're walking, running, biking, swimming, or on a treadmill or elliptical, you don't need to adjust the device when you change your activity.

Move Bar: Sitting for long periods of time can be detrimental to your health. To remind you to keep moving, vívofit 4 displays the Move Bar and gives an audible alert after one hour of inactivity. Additional segments of the Move Bar appear after every 15 minutes of inactivity. Walking a short distance will reset the Move Bar.

Intensity Minutes: The vívofit 4 monitors the intensity of your activity and tracks your intensity minutes. Several health organizations recommend at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity activity per week.

Toe-to-Toe: The Toe-to-Toe feature lets you wirelessly connect your vívofit 4 to your child's  vívofit jr. 2 device, or another vívofit 4. You can challenge your children, spouse, or friend to a instant timed step competition. After the competition, both devices will display the total number of steps taken.

Water Resistance: The vívofit 4 has a water resistance rating of 5 ATM, which means it can withstand pressures equivalent to a depth of 50 meters (164 feet). Not only can you wear the device in the rain and wet weather, you can even shower or swim with it. The device also has a wide operating temperature range of 14° to 140°F.

Batteries: The vívofit 4 is powered by two user-replaceable SR43 batteries (also known as a 386 button battery) with an estimated life of approximately one year. The batteries never have to be charged, so it's always ready for your next activity. A small Phillips screwdriver is required to change the batteries.
