About the Garmin Varia™ UT800

A smart light for all riding conditions
A smart light for all riding conditions
I found out early in my cycling career that, if you're a dedicated cyclist, you won't limit yourself to riding when the sun is up and the sky is blue. Dawn, dusk, night time, rain, fog — you've got to be flexible and ready to get that time in the saddle. That's where a tool like Garmin's Varia UT800 is so awesome — it combines a high-power bike light with smart features to handle all the conditions you ride in.
Smart
Varia UT800 works great on its own. Attach it to your bike with the included handlebar mount and you've got five different light modes on tap — high, medium, low, night flash, and day flash. But when you pair it with one of the many compatible Edge cycling computers, Varia UT800 really shines. It will automatically adjust the intensity of the beam based on your speed, so you'll get more light when you're going fast, less at slower speed. Plus it will increase intensity as night falls, and dim as the sun comes up. It's an excellent way to conserve power and extend the life of your battery. It will even shut off automatically when you're done riding.

Features
Overview: The Garmin Varia UT800 Smart Headlight uses ambient light conditions, speed, and other data to adjust the intensity of the beam automatically. The Smart Headlight can pair with your compatible Garmin Edge device to automatically turn the light on or off, or control the brightness. The light is powered by a rechargeable Lithium-Ion battery, and carries an IPX7 weather-proof rating. This Varia UT800 Urban Edition comes with the Universal Out Front bike mount. A Trail Edition version, with a helmet mount, is also available.
Light Intensity: The Varia UT800 is a variable intensity LED bike headlight with five Light Intensity Modes. The beam has a 270° angle of visibility. At its highest intensity (800 lumens), the light is visible in daylight from more than a mile away. The battery life varies depending upon the intensity mode:
Intensity Mode | LED Luminous Flux | Battery Life |
High | 800 lm (lumens) | Up to 1.5 hours |
Medium | 400 lm | Up to 3 hours |
Low | 200 lm | Up to 6 hours |
Night Flash | 100 to 300 lm | Up to 6 hours |
Day Flash | 700 lm | Up to 25 hours |
Automatic Beam Intensity: When you pair the UT800 with a compatible Garmin Edge device, the headlight's intensity is automatically adjusted, based on ambient lighting conditions, local sunrise/sunset times, and your speed. At lower speeds (8-12 mph), the light intensity is relatively low (80-100 lm). As you increase your speed (15-20 mph), the light intensity grows to 400 lm, to a maximum of 800 lm at 25 mph or higher. Compatible Edge models include: Edge 1030, Edge Explore 1000, Edge 1000, Edge 820 Explore, Edge 820, and Edge 520.
Battery Charging: The built-in Lithium-Ion battery can be charged via USB from a computer or by plugging the supplied USB cable into a Garmin-approved AC adapter. A fully depleted battery charges in about 6 hours using a computer, or 4 hours using an AC power source.
Mounting: The Garmin Varia UT800 Urban Edition comes the Universal Out Front Bike Mount (OFBM) for installing the headlight on the handlebars. Two rubber shims are included to accommodate different handlebar tube diameters. For 25.4mm diameter handlebars, you should use the thick pad, and for 31.8mm handlebars, the thin pad should be used. The Out Front Bike Mount allows you to mount an Edge device on the top, and the Varia headlight on the bottom. The headlight fits into an adapter that mounts to the OFBM with a quarter-turn, making it easy to install or remove.
