About the Garmin Varia™ UT800 Trail Edition

See and be seen
See and be seen
Whether riding my mountain bike on some sweet single-track, or my road bike on the tight country roads here in Central Virginia, I know that bike lights are "gotta have" items for my bike. Garmin's Varia UT800 Trail Edition headlight takes smart integration and visibility to new levels. The Varia UT800 includes a versatile helmet mount that directs the light where I'm looking, has five light modes for different times of day, and boasts 800-lumen output for super-strong visibility from over a mile away. It works with select Garmin Edge cycling computers to automatically control the power and intensity of the light. Even with all this technology, Garmin kept this light's profile down so it stays out of the way on your handlebars or on your helmet using the included mounts.
A smarter light
The UT800 communicates with compatible Garmin Edge cycling computers and remotes via ANT+ wireless technology, giving it some very unique capabilities. If your computer has light-sensing capabilities, the UT800 will automatically vary its intensity to match conditions — the darker it gets, the brighter it shines. Plus, the beam of the headlight adjusts depending on your speed. As you go faster, the beam focuses further ahead; it shines closer to you as you slow. And the UT800's beam is designed so it stays low — illuminating the road, but not blinding oncoming drivers (or cyclists!)

Features
Overview: The Garmin Varia UT800 Smart Headlight uses ambient light conditions, speed, and other data to adjust the intensity of the beam automatically. The Smart Headlight can pair with your compatible Garmin Edge device to automatically turn the light on or off, or control the brightness. The light is powered by a rechargeable Lithium-Ion battery, and carries an IPX7 weather-proof rating. This Varia UT800 Trail Edition comes with a helmet mount. An Urban Edition, which includes the Universal Out Front bike mount, is also available.
Light Intensity: The Varia UT800 is a variable intensity LED bike headlight with five Light Intensity Modes. The beam has a 270° angle of visibility. At its highest intensity (800 lumens), the light is visible in daylight from more than a mile away. The battery life varies depending upon the intensity mode:
Intensity Mode | LED Luminous Flux | Battery Life |
High | 800 lm (lumens) | Up to 1.5 hours |
Medium | 400 lm | Up to 3 hours |
Low | 200 lm | Up to 6 hours |
Night Flash | 100 to 300 lm | Up to 6 hours |
Day Flash | 700 lm | Up to 25 hours |
Automatic Beam Intensity: When you pair the UT800 with a compatible Garmin Edge device, the headlight's intensity is automatically adjusted, based on ambient lighting conditions, local sunrise/sunset times, and your speed. At lower speeds (8-12 mph), the light intensity is relatively low (80-100 lm). As you increase your speed (15-20 mph), the light intensity grows to 400 lm, to a maximum of 800 lm at 25 mph or higher. Compatible Edge models include: Edge 1030, Edge Explore 1000, Edge 1000, Edge 820 Explore, Edge 820, and Edge 520.
Battery Charging: The built-in Lithium-Ion battery can be charged via USB from a computer or by plugging the supplied USB cable into a Garmin-approved AC adapter. A fully depleted battery charges in about 6 hours using a computer, or 4 hours using an AC power source.
Mounting: The Garmin Varia UT800 Trail Edition comes with a helmet mount for installing the headlight on the top of your vented bike helmet. The headlight fits into an adapter that attaches to the helmet mount with a quarter-turn, making it easy to install or remove.
