Overview

Our take on the Sony XBR-65X900F

Last year, Sony's X900E-series 4K TVs were among our top sellers, and made several "Best of the Year" lists. The 2018 X900F series replaces those models, and offers improved picture contrast, black levels, and video processing. If you've not yet experienced the lifelike quality of a 4K/HDR picture, the 65" Sony XBR-65X900F will amaze you.

Sony XBR-55X900F

It's all about the picture

Last year, Sony's X900E-series 4K TVs were among our top sellers, and made several "Best of the Year" lists. The 2018 X900F series replaces those models, and offers improved picture contrast, black levels, and video processing. If you've not yet experienced the lifelike quality of a 4K/HDR picture, the 65" Sony XBR-65X900F will amaze you.

The "secret sauce" is Sony's video processing

What elevates the XBR-65X900F above competing TVs is Sony's unmatched video processing. Their X1™ Extreme chip packs 40% more processing muscle than Sony's original X1 chip. It tackles two tasks: reducing the compression noise common in streamed video and lower-resolution sources, and upscaling every source to near 4K/HDR quality. Picture quality with 4K streamed content and Ultra HD Blu-ray is spectacular, but you don't need a 4K source to be wowed by this TV.

Wide-open color, clarity and contrast

Before HDR came along a few years back, video standards were based on old-school tube TVs with low brightness capabilities. By comparison, HDR-equipped TVs like the XBR-65X900F can display much greater contrast and a wider color spectrum. You'll see a lot of TVs claim HDR compatibility, but the XBR-65X900F's impressive peak brightness and advanced local dimming really demonstrate what all the HDR buzz is about.

The XBR-65X900F's full-array LED backlight produces precisely localized lighting across the entire screen. By dimming some areas of the screen and boosting others, Sony's latest X-tended Dynamic Range PRO™ technology produces a brightness range that's about 6 times wider than what we've been used to with conventional LED-backlit TVs. And Sony's new X-Motion Clarity™ with 120Hz refresh rate takes care of motion blur without dimming picture brightness.

You can tell this TV what you want

The XBR-65X900F's built-in Android operating system lets you easily log in to your Google ID to access a huge collection of apps, games and content from Google Play. Use the Chromecast Built-in feature to stream movies, pictures, and TV shows from your iOS or Android-based phone, or from a laptop.

The included remote control lets you activate the built-in Google Assistant simply by pressing the mic button and speaking into the microphone. Use it to adjust the volume, change channels or inputs, and control other basic TV functions. Search for a particular movie or actor just by saying the name. Google Assistant can also answer everyday questions and control connected smart home devices. The XBR-65X900F is also compatible with Amazon Alexa voice control assistants.

Use the Sanus MountFinder™ to see a list of wall-mounts that work with your specific TV.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Amazing tv! I was trying to decide between the Sony XBR-65X850F and this TV. The price on the 850 was very attractive but after looking at the two at a local store, I decided the 900 was the best picture for the money. I use an AppleTV so I wasn't planning on using the Smart TV features because of the mixed reviews but after using them a little bit, I was left impressed by the functionality. Unfortunately, after hooking up my new Denon receiver, the ARC connection has proven to be unreliable and I can't get sound from the TV to the receiver. I'm told by anAV guy that this is fairly common among TVs and receivers. For this reason, I'll continue to use the AppleTV though I will likely upgrade the the AppleTV 4K soon.

Pros: Incredible picture. Very good Smart TV interface.

This is my second 4K UHD television. Sony has always provided an excellent visual experience and the XBR-65X900F did not disappoint. Out of the box experience was good and limited tweaking improved the imagery over my other 4K TV. The small speakers on the unit are not a problem, as all audio is sent to my 7.1 AVR and external speakers. The Crutchfield experience never lets me down. Fair price, fast and free shipping are a definite plus.

    Pros: Build quality Video processing

Cons: Internal speakers Some glare on screen

    Great tv

Great picture, TV has lots of picture settings pre set from sports to vivid. You can even do a customized setting. Takes a little getting use to. Reviewed several tv's and the Sony was the best.

Pros: Pre set settings, great picture

Cons: Ports on back of TV in an awkward position, difficult to locate slots when tv is mounted on wall. Could of designed it without the being covered by the TV case. Should of recessed them into back of TV.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased this "Smart TV" specifically to cut the Sattelite dish and stream Directv Now. This $1500 tv does not have the capability for the DTV now app! A 300 tv from Wally would. What's up Sony?? Nothing against Crutchfield at all. Now I use a Roku stick in the Sony Smart TV to make it super smart, I guess.

    Pros: Beautiful picture

    Cons: No Directv Now app

    Worth the price paid

Larry from Indianapolis, IN on 12/9/2018

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very good TV. Picture, color, and style are some of the best I've seen. Not the least expensive and not the most expensive but worth the price paid. Will have to buy a sound bar as the speakers aren't the best but then few TV's, if any, have excellent sound. Glad I stumbled across Crutchfield. Their prices are relatively the same as Amazon and Best Buy. BIG difference is they do customer service the way it should be done AND you get tech support. You are actually speaking with a knowledgeable person. From now on Amazon is just a river in S. America.

Pros: Just a really good hi tech TV. Not a $700 no frills but not a $3000> be all end all set. It has all the bells and whistles I need and a sleek design. Delivers a sharp, bright picture.

Cons: Too many picture settings. Custom, vivid, and standard are all that are needed. Lots of menu's not easily understood. Needed help figuring out. Most likely because I'm an old guy and not hi-tech savvy.

I purchased this model because of a recommendation from a friend of mine in the business. He was so right. The picture quality is amazing. I say it every day, over and over! Just ask my wife. My sound bar which is a Bose solo, also performs better. I could not be happier.

    Awesome Ultra 4K Television

GMON from Navarre, FL on 12/8/2018

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Sony XBR65X900F is an amazing TV that is even better than all of its positive reviews. I currently have a Sony KDL52XBR4 television that is 10 years old and still works fine but I wanted to upgrade to 4K. I researched for months all the professional ratings (Consumer Reports, Rtings, Cnet) and individual ratings (Amazon, Best Buy, Crutchfield) and the Sony XBR65X900F appeared in almost everyone's top 5. I spoke with "Artie" a TV expert at Crutchfield several times and with his expertise and his vast knowledge of current technology helped make my choice easier. The OLED televisions have excellent displays but the excessive price and risk of a permanent burn in made the Sony XBR65X900F an easy choice. The set upscales HD to UHD very well(which is 95% of content now available) has a full-array LED backlight with local dimming for better blacks and contrast and motion blur is a thing of the past. I love the Google Android smart TV platform which offers access to Google Cast(built in) for streaming from mobile devices, plus Google Play apps, in addition to many streaming services. The included remote has voice search(you will wonder how you did without) and has Google Assistant built in. The smart TV features are extremely user friendly . This is without a doubt the BEST TV I have ever owned. Buying from Crutchfield is always a pleasure-- their level of customer service is unmatched.

Pros: 1. Purchasing from Crutchfield 2. Exceptional color accuracy 3. Deep black levels 4. Excellent HD to UHD upscaling 5. Superb motion handling for sports

Cons: 1. Inputs on rear of television are positioned wrong which creates some issues with my wall mount bracket. 2. No paper owners manual

    Unrivaled Sony Picture Quality

Rich from Springfield, MO on 12/7/2018

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Been upgrading my system over the last year. Started with the audio and now this new TV for the video. I spent many months researching. Upgraded from a 2013 Samsung 51" plasma. I really enjoyed the plasma and had my eye on an LG C8 OLED but I really wanted to go 65" and at that size, the C8 is $1000 more than this Sony. I'm not willing to drop that kind of money. I was a bit apprehensive going LED LCD from plasma, but this FALD LED is really good. The last time I owned a Sony TV was a 27" trinitron CRT. The video processing in this TV is fantastic. Upscaled 1080p content looks amazing. I'm rewatching a lot of movies and appreciating the video experience and, of course, native 4K content is phenomenal. There's several sites online recommending picture settings for the X900F. In my experience, those sites are a decent starting place, but tweaking for your own room, lighting, and preference matters. I bought a Philips Hue light set and put some can lights on the floor behind the TV shining up on the wall and the bias light makes a considerable difference to improve the perception of contrast. I'm not a big gamer but enjoy Zelda from time to time. Picture from a Wii U looks great and input lag for casual gaming is perfectly fine. Bottom line, for the size and price, this is a superb TV, very pleased with my purchase.

Pros: Sony upscaling and motion processing are excellent. Colors are vibrant and accurate, on axis black levels are very good for an LCD. Looks great in both dark and fully lit rooms. Bias lighting in a dark room helps considerably. No risk of image retention or screen burn.

Cons: Some blooming but effect greatly diminished by bias lighting. Off axis viewing angles degrade picture quality, black levels, and increase blooming.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I agonized for a year about a new television to replace my beloved Samsung 58" plasma which I had bought from Crutchfield 8 years ago. I debated the OLED vs. LED and while I saw an obvious difference when viewed side-by-side, I went with the "budget" choice and chose the X900F. It arrived promptly and I got it up and running in 30 minutes. At first, I was concerned about the picture quality and had a moment of panic thinking I would return the television and go for the OLED. However, I called Brady in support and he walked me through some very subtle setting changes and voila the picture came alive! I am now watching non-stop trying out all the wonderful programming that is available through streaming services. Blue Planet through Netflix is absolutely gorgeous and I can't imagine a better image. I know the X900F is considered mid-level but this is indeed a high-end product. It's well made, easy to use, and I promise you will be thrilled with the picture. Much thanks to the entire Crutchfield staff!

Pros: Image quality, design, ease of use, a smile every time you turn it on.

    Cons: None.

Fantastic picture out of the box - extremely sharp and even & upscaling works great too. The smart TV interface has been good so far too (haven't felt the need to use a 3rd party streaming box with the TV). Can't comment on audio as I'm using it with a soundbar. So far ARC has worked seamlessly and it automatically detected the sound bar and self-configured to use it.

Pros: Picture, weight, unobtrusive thin bezel

    Cons: None so far...

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Well let me tell you I had the 55 inches and was so impressed by the image quality had to exchange it for the 65 inches and was best decision :)..Absolutely stunning beautiful accurate color picture!. Black level of this tv is extremely close to an Oled, and to be honest I had the LG C8 OLED and brought it back as the black level crushed the image ( to my taste ) and upscaling wasn't very good at all , colors were over saturated and looked artificial especially in a non 4k display! BUT THIS SONY 900F is just breathtaking, skin tone is very natural, colors deep and rich and omg the dark scenes has some incredible clear details that now I'm re watching all the seasons of Game of thrones and it looks absolutely stunning, it really looks like 4k! You cant beat Sony's colors and upscaling hands down! I threw everything on , 1080P, 4K, HDR, older movies and everything was superb! If you get it make sure to download new update as it delivers you Dolby vision :) . Also I had no problem at all connecting to Netflix or HBO, switching between apps, everything is fast and smooth! The exchange was impeccable, on time and tv came in a perfect new box ! Only thing, I had to pay a restocking fee for the 55 inches, but I knew that and so make sure to get your perfect size or you will have to pay over 100$ to exchange it! Being my first time buying experience online for a TV I was very happy with this company

Pros: Full array display that gives incredible black level, huge difference from edge lit displays , Good local dimming Deep Rich Colors, natural skin tone Upscaling Clarity/clean image Stunning HDR Dolby Vision

Cons: None so far BUT not be suitable to sit in very wide angles as image unfortunately looses color and black level BUT that is for someone who really sits way on the side, this tv has best viewing angle of many others tv brand still because it is Full Array display and does improve this concern, Oled is the only tv were you can sit in a very wide angle anyways

    Fantastic picture!

This TV is great value for money! The picture is fantastic with vivid colors and deep blacks. The only minor criticism I would have is that the screen is highly reflective, so room lighting can sometimes be an issue. Beyond that, it is a great TV I would highly recommend.

Read all kinds of reviews ,looked at local dealers and discussed with tv people , read Consumer Reports etc and concluded that the Sony XBR-65X900F was far better than the OLED & QLED competion for far less money so started discussions with Cody at Crutchfield with numerous questions and ended asking him to notify me when it went on sale . after a week or two my email had the price reduction notices, then Cody provided me with a listing link to local Installers since at *! year old I wasn't about to wall mount a 65 " tv by myself in our bedroom so my handicapped wife could watch her favorite TV programs from bed The listing obtained an installer for $175 less than the best price I could find locally. Cody represents Crutchfield in the best manner! TV delivered one day earlier than promised!!!!!

    Pros: none

Cons: had problem locating serial number to register but Cody and Sony helped me get squared away and accomplished

    Great TV!

The sales person (Trevor) was helpful as we went through the deciding process. We have used it a total of two weeks so far, but the picture is clear and the colors, especially reds really stand out in the picture. The hookup was easy and there is not as much glare from the lights in the rom behind us as the Samsung we had in there before. We went with a sound bar with it as well and it makes a difference over the factory speakers. Overall I would recommend this TV, I believe it is worth the extra money.

Pros: The colors are very distinct, a little more true. Setup was easy and remote is easy to operate.

Cons: When compared to the sound bar, the sound it not as good, but it is fine if you didnt know any different

    Great Picture, worth the money.

I watch lots of sports and when the networks broadcast with their best stuff, everything is outstanding. Great picture quality as expected from Sony and the recommendations. Sound quality matches. Great viewing in the theatre style we watch from 10 to 15 feet.

Pros: Lots of capabilities and options for current technology. Probably sets up best for Android users with tablets and phones, easy. I have had the 65x900 for a month and am a raving fan. Crutchfields was great to work with as always.

Cons: I am an Apple iOS guy so set up took some time.

Great picture! I am not a fan of Google so I opted out of all its settings. I was concerned about how far the stand legs stuck out, they actually hung over the edges of my stand. I found on a youtube review where they were designed so that a Sony sound bar would fit between them. They also mentioned the legs could be reversed so that they pointed in. My legs are now pointing in and the TV is just as stable.

Bought this to replace a 55" D8000YF. Mistake. That 7 year old Samsung unit has brighter, more vibrant colors than this set. Can it be made better by calibration? Maybe? But good luck with that if youre an average person that just wants to open the box and watch tv or movies.

Pros: Lots of adjustment options....I guess thats a pro, if youre into that sort of thing.

Cons: Unispiring picture. Not as good as my 7 year old samsung set.

The Sony XBR 900F is as expected a superb TV in every aspect. it has met or exceeded my expectations. I have been thoroughly satisfied with this purchase especially with the awesome service from Crutchfield. Here are the reasons I purchased this TV over the competitors: 1) Sony brand reputation 2) Processor power. especially for HD upscaling to 4K 3) HDR, Dolby Vision 4) Sleek aesthetics. Thin black bezel. 5) Google home (AI) capability

    Pros: See review

Cons: The remote controller could be better - volume button can't control my Sonos volume.

I have had the 900F for a week and I have no complaints so far. The set up was easy. The picture quality is excellent out of the box with clean, bright colors, excellent contrast, rich blacks and outstanding motion control. Better than some OLED and QLED sets I have seen. I was very happy with the support from Crutchfield. They were extremely helpful. The first two units were damaged in transit and they were quick to take care of the problem in both cases. Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Without a doubt this is a superior TV. EVerything works smoothly and is easy to navigate. Picture quality is excellent right out of the box. The best 4K picture I have experienced with deep rich blacks and color the way only Sony can produce. I give this tv a 5 star rating with only minor flaws of design in the need for a new remote cosmetically and better cord hiding in the back of the tv.

Pros: Set up is easy and picture is beautiful right out of the box. Design is excellent .

Cons: Remote works well for function but is arkward and a little clumsy. Needs redesigned. Hiding the cords could be improved.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very happy with the tv. I chose it over OLED due to the fact that it would mainly be used for gaming and burn in can't be completely ruled out of the OLED TV's. Great picture over my son's 55 inch 2 to 3 year old Sony. The sound is ok so a Samsung gaming sound bar was bought at the same time...... Which is an upgrade over the tv but not as good as my surround sound in living room, obviously. There is light bleed from bright objects if viewed from the side. Tv needs to be watched straight on. Blacks are very good when watched straight on. No bezel hardly so it looks smaller than my Panasonic plasma that is 65 inches and same size. Almost felt I needed to go bigger once I put it on the stand but I didn't want to over power the room it is in. PS4 pro was plugged into the wrong HDMI at first and was changed a few days later being that only HDMI 2 and 3 support the highest resolution setting and HDR on PS4 pro. People have complained of the Android powered smart TV apps. It is not anything to be concerned with. The apps work fine and are easy to find. The remote has voice search and the tv will link to an Android phone. Your phone can be used as a remote or used to cast youtube videos that you are watching on your phone to the TV instead. You can turn the screen on your phone off and use tv. I felt this tv was the next best thing after the LG OLED TV's so if you're not gaming check those out too. If you are a gamer then you may want to check this tv out. You can't go wrong.

Pros: Great picture, clean look, great for gaming, no fear of possible burn in or image retention. The smart menu and apps using Android are not bad like reviewers say.

Cons: Tv needs to be watched straight on and not from side. OLED TV's may be a better choice for tv watching but not gamers due to better blacks.

About a week in with this TV, and we love it overall. Great picture, easy setup. Adjusts to room brightness levels well. A little bit of flare from the way it processes HDR, and occasional "soap opera" effect from X-Motion

Pros: Excellent picture Good Smart TV apps Stylish design Good upscaling Amazing with 4K signal

Cons: Some "flare" from HDR (due to zoned brightness) Some "soap opera" effect when the 120MHz (took me a while to optimize this) ARC communication with my receiver results in longer start-up times than I'd like Needs to come with a real user manual

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I transitioned from a Sony 49" to Sony 65", both XBR and both with HDR. The images with HDR are excellent; photo quality--reminds me of the differences years ago between color prints and Kodachrome slides. I found the Crutchfield web site to be well above average in terms of detailed specifications available and more models to compare with. I called Crutchfield to talk with an expert about the detailed specs, trying to decide between models, and the expert was articulate, very well informed, and the discussion went very well. So far, so good. Then I had a relatively poor experience with the shipping and delivery of the product. I am accustomed to 2 day delivery; I understand that with a product this large the shipping would be different. UPS changed the delivery date to their last stop in a large city 250 miles from here three different times (first a Monday, then the next day, then the next day) ; a UPS person called on a Monday morning to ask if I would be home Monday and Tuesday; when I told them I was promised a home delivery appointment, they told me that would be set up by a cartage company. The actual delivery was 4 days later. There must be a better way.

Pros: Excellent product. Excellent web site. Excellent customer service.

Cons: Shipping was slow and disorganized.

Replaced my Reference PLasma TV after 10 years

James from Palmetto, FL on 4/2/2018

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This Sony TV is a main TV replacement from my previous Panasonic TH-50PZ750U plasma. I still have the plasma TV but have moved it to the bedroom for viewing. After watching the plasma for years with its industry standard top of the line model for its time period I was hopeful that it would come close in color reproduction and seemless picture quality without having to justify the extra money spent for the Sony Z9D or the A1E 2017 models. I am not at all disappointed with my choice!! This new Sony packs the technology and processors that rival my older plasma. It provides a perfect combination of LED brightness and contrast with deep blacks and color saturation with the warmth of a plasma. Watching Star Wars: The Last Jedi in 4K HDR was breath-taking. The subtleties' of the film and the 4K reproduction was awesome! I then watched a standard Blu-Ray of Avatar and was completely blown away. It looked just as good if not slightly better than the 4K Blu-Ray in my opinion. Granted I am using now the Oppo 203 as my video source (which is outstanding and worth every penny) and Audioquest Cinnamon HDMI cables...but WOW! I am sold on this model and would highly recommend to any buyer. Thank you Crutchfield for outstanding customer service (Ember was super super great!), fast delivery, and for being my goto electronics store for all your needs for the past 22 years!!!

Pros: Gorgeous picture right out of the box, easy to setup, and packed with technology

4K HDR: For the ultimate in picture quality, this TV pairs the brilliance of 4K clarity with the brightness, color, and detail of High Dynamic Range (HDR). Combined with 4K Ultra HD resolution, HDR video content delivers exceptional detail, color and contrast, with a far wider range of brightness than other video formats. The result is the most lifelike picture TVs have ever been able to create, with brilliant highlights and fine detail.

    • Ultra 4K Resolution: See more on TV than ever before with over 8 million individual pixels (3,840 x 2,160) compared to about 2 million (1,920 x 1,080) on a1080p HDTV. Its detail is so vivid and crisp, even when viewed from close distances; it's nearly impossible to discern a single pixel, even from inches away.
    • HDR (High Dynamic Range): High Dynamic Range (HDR) enhances the dynamic range of a picture, increasing the contrast between the brightest whites and darkest blacks. Every pixel is made more accurate, regardless of resolution, bringing scenes to life with greater detail. HDR's greater dynamic range of luminosity or brightness levels brings greater contrast & wider color spectrum to the screen. This increased contrast reveals the subtle nuances of the image, from detailed blacks and shadows to the brightest whites and colors, plus greater depth. Previously hidden areas of dark shadow and sunlight are now full of clarity and detail. Movies and TV shows in HDR are closer to the original recording and the director's vision with more brightness, contrast and color, for a truly lifelike viewing experience.
      • HDR 10: HDR 10 is an open standard and currently the most popular HDR format on the market. It supports 10-bit color and 1,000 nits. It uses static metadata at the start of a movie to tell the receiver and your TV that the video content is encoded using HDR.
      • HLG: HLG (Hybrid-Log Gamma) is primarily designed for live video feed and over-the-air broadcasts. It uses no pre-encoded metadata and is backwards compatible with SDR. HLG's native compatibility allows much of today's existing SDR infrastructure to be re-used for HDR in the future.
      • Dolby Vision (Firmware Update Available): Unlike HDR 10 which contains static metadata and HLG which uses not metadata, Dolby Vision adjusts brightness, color, and contrast automatically for each scene. Dynamic metadata carries information that maps every image to your TV's display capabilities, so you see more of what the content creator intended.
Note: Please use a premium high speed HDMI cable with 18 Gbps and above to view HDR content.

4K HDR Processor X1 Extreme: Sony's 4K HDR Processor X1 Extreme includes powerful real-time image processing for ultra detailed picture. Made to enhance the latest generation of 4K HDR pictures, the 4K HDR Processor X1 Extreme brings reality to every scene. With 40% more real-time image processing than our renowned 4K Processor X1, it delivers unprecedented picture quality for everything you watch, upscaling content from any source nearer to 4K. The 4K HDR Processor X1 Extreme uses Super Bit Mapping 4K HDR technology, Precision Color Mapping, Object-based HDR Remaster, and Dynamic Contrast Enhancer to produce pure colors at higher brightness levels for truly natural pictures.

    • Super Bit Mapping 4K HDR: Super Bit Mapping 4K HDR creates a smoother, more natural picture by minimizing its color banding. With 14-bit powerful signal processing, it breaks up the solid bands of color of an 8-bit or 10-bit source, up-converting to 14-bit equivalent gradation, with 64x more color levels. It delivers graceful reproduction of faces, sunsets, and other areas of subtle color. It creates smooth, natural 4K TV picture quality as you watch, without the "banding" that can occur on other TVs.
    • Precision Color Mapping: Precision Color Mapping independently analyzes every scene and pixel so the perfect shade and tone are applied dynamically for rich, natural colors. It enhances and optimizes colors individually and finely in real time. It controls every color perfectly for rich and natural results.
    • Object-Based HDR Remaster: With Object-based HDR remaster, the color in individual objects on screen is analyzed and the contrast adjusted; unlike most TVs where contrast is only adjusted along one black-to-white contrast curve.  Because objects are remastered individually, this TV can reproduce greater depth, textures, and more realistic pictures. By analyzing the objects in each scene individually, Object-based HDR remaster optimizes and enhances color and contrast. It brings everything you watch closer to the quality of HDR. Dark elements get darker, bright elements brighter, and everything in between is more accurately lit, for realism in every scene never-before-possible on our TVs. You'll see contours on mountains, hidden textures on flowers, depth in clouds, and wildlife has the contrast and color of nature, for a more natural and realistic picture on screen.
    • Dynamic Contrast Enhancer: The Dynamic Contrast Enhancer optimizes the range of brightness frame-by-frame according to what's happening on screen to reproduce deeper blacks, brighter whites, and more video color.

4K X-Reality Pro Upscaler w/ Dual Database Processing: Sony's 4K X-Reality Pro Upscaler w/ Dual Database Processing enhances Ultra-HD, HD, and SD images by analyzing and refining images with beautifully natural detail and clarity. One database is used to clean the picture, reducing on-screen noise. The other is used to upscale the resolution, improving clarity. These two powerful image improvement databases work together, dynamically improving pixels in real time. Each database has tens of thousands of references, amassed from our experience creating content for TV and movies over the years. With 4K X-Reality PRO and Dual Database Processing, every image is upscaled closer to true 4K quality for remarkable clarity. This 4K television upscales your favorite TV shows, DVD and Blu-ray movies, even video-on-demand content, and smartphone videos to Ultra-HD.

    • Noise Reduction Database: Compressed noise is identified by the database, which includes "before and after" data on what a picture should look like and removes the compressed picture noise
    • Upscaling Database: The upscaling database also includes "before and after" data, which is used to upscale the signal and create a more realistic picture

TRILUMINOS Display: Unique to Sony, a TRILUMINOS Display with its specially developed backlight selectively maps colors across a wider gamut, ensuring subtle colors do not become oversaturated and unnatural. You'll enjoy vivid, authentic images that evoke the emotion in every scene. TRILUMINOS Display uses a wider color spectrum than a conventional flat-panel TV display. A TRILUMINOS Display excels at reproducing reds, greens, and blues; colors that are notoriously difficult for TVs to display accurately. It also displays skin tones beautifully, thanks to its extensive color palette and precise gradation.

X-tended Dynamic Range Pro (6x): X-tended Dynamic Range PRO lets you enjoy beautiful night shots, full of dazzling lights and deeper blacks. With up to 6x the contrast of conventional LED-LCD TVs, this 4K HDR TV with X-tended Dynamic Range PRO ensures dark scenes are darker and bright scenes brighter. By precisely balancing the light output across the screen, dimming some areas and boosting others, X-tended Dynamic Range PRO reveals a brightness range 6x that of a conventional LED-LCD TV. It enhances any source to near HDR quality with a wider range of brightness.

X-Motion Clarity: On some screens, sports and fast action scenes can seem to go by in a blur. Sony's latest X-Motion Clarity technology keeps everything smooth, bright and clear. Each "blink" is individually controlled and its duration optimized, while brightness is boosted when needed, so you won't miss a thing. X-Motion Clarity technology keeps fast action smooth and clear. Moving images are precisely controlled to minimize blur. Even during high speed scenes, pictures stay true with no loss in brightness.

Video Inputs: The Sony Ultra-HD TV is equipped with HDMI 2.0b and 3.5mm video inputs.

    • HDMI 2.0b: The Ultra-HD TV is fitted with four HDMI 2.0b inputs to connect your Ultra-HD/HDR and HD sources; such as Ultra Blu-ray, Blu-ray, Satellite/Cable and Playstation. In addition, any HDMI input can be used to connect a PC to this TV. The HDMI inputs will accept 4K, 1080p, 1080i, 720p, 480p, and 480i signals. HDMI inputs 2 & 3 will do 4K (60Hz), while HDMI inputs 1 & 4 will only support 4K (30/24Hz).
      • HDCP 2.2: HDCP 2.2 is supported by all of the TV's HDMI inputs. HDCP 2.2 is short for "High bandwidth Digital Content Protection" and is used for 4K video copyright protection for compatibility with Ultra HD Blu-ray players and 4K Satellite/Cable providers.
      • 4:4:4 Color Subsampling: All four HDMI inputs will support up to 4:4:4 chroma subsampling for full color data rendering of 4K video (30/60fps). 4:2:2 (30/60fps) and 4:2:0 (60fps) are also supported by all HDMI inputs. With 4:4:4 color, luminance (brightness) and chroma (color) are sampled at the same rate, resulting in an RGB color palette as big as the video sampling rate for a video image with more total colors, plus greater color accuracy and detail.
    • 3.5mm AV Input: In addition to HDMI connectivity, there is also a 3.5mm AV input for connection of an analog audio/video component. There are no standard composite or component video inputs.
Note: The TV has built-in over-the-air HDTV (ATSC) and Clear QAM tuners with an RF-coaxial input, so you don't need a separate set-top box to receive and decode over-the-air HDTV/SDTV or unencrypted Digital Cable signals.

IMAX Enhanced Technology (via Firmware Update): Get the most premium at-home entertainment experience with IMAX Enhanced; the latest technology program from IMAX that sets a new standard for image, sound, scale and content quality. This new certification and licensing program combines IMAX digitally re-mastered 4K HDR content and DTS audio technologies to offer a new level of quality in immersive sight and sound experiences in the home. IMAX Enhanced lets you experience premium content digitally remastered by IMAX, so you can watch the highest-quality 4K movies with immersive audio delivered by DTS. Not only will IMAX Enhanced content look and sound amazing, but other audio/video content will also look and sound great too.

    • Remastered 4K/HDR Video: It utilizes a sophisticated, advanced algorithm designed to produce the highest-quality, sharpest 4K HDR images. This advanced process accurately reduces noise and grain under the filmmaker's guidance to best optimize the content for a much higher quality, higher brightness 4K HDR display format. Select IMAX Enhanced titles that were shot with IMAX cameras or specially formatted for IMAX theatres will also include an expanded aspect ratio for the film's home release to show your more picture on your TV. IMAX Enhanced certified TVs must be at least 65" with support for HDR10 and dynamic, as well as specific calibration, resolution, color, brightness, contrast, and scale of image capabilities.
    • Remastered DTS:X Audio: IMAX and DTS will also partner with award-winning Hollywood sound mixers to use a special variant of its DTS:X codec technology integrated in home audio equipment to deliver an IMAX signature sound experience that is dynamic, immersive, theatrical, and powerful. IMAX Enhanced supports both 5.1 and 11.1 formats, but the recommended speaker layout for an IMAX Enhanced system is 7.2.4 with seven horizontal speakers, two subwoofers and four height speakers; 5.1.4 is the minimum layout for IMAX Enhanced. However, due to various constraints you may opt to install only a 5.1ch speaker system. In such cases, DTS Virtual:X is required to properly render and remap audio to the available speakers.
    • Available IMAX Content: IMAX is working with its global studio and other content partners to build a steady stream of IMAX Enhanced versions of movies and other programming using the newest, proprietary post-production process developed by IMAX. IMAX will be announcing and releasing IMAX Enhanced versions of a wide range of films both for 4K/HDR streaming and Ultra HD Blu-ray Discs.
    Notes:
    • To take full advantage of IMAX Enhanced, you need an IMAX Enhanced certified 4K/HDR TV (65"-up) or Projector and an IMAX Enhanced certified DTS:X enabled AV receiver or soundbar.
    • IMAX and DTS developed the IMAX Enhanced program out of their decades of combined expertise in image and sound science to make it easier for consumers to select the products and content that will deliver the highest-quality, sharpest 4K HDR images and powerful, immersive sound at home.
    • To qualify and carry the IMAX Enhanced logo, the highest-end TVs, AV receivers, projectors, sound bars, and  must meet stringent performance standards established by IMAX, DTS and Hollywood's leading colorists in order to create a consistent and higher bar for image and sound performance on premium devices.

Picture Adjustments: The TV offers a variety of screen, picture, and video adjustments to maximize image quality.

    • Screen Modes: The Screen Modes feature allows you to select the screen display which fits the current video image and TV screen best. Choose from Wide Zoom, Normal, Full, Zoom, or Auto Wide. Based on the original signal source, you may see black bars around the picture or just on the both sides of the screen. Sometimes you will see the picture fill  the full screen.
    • Picture Modes: You can select one of the following picture modes - Standard, Vivid, Cinema (Pro/Home), Sports, Animation, Photo (Standard/Vivid/Custom), Game, or Custom.
    • Advanced Video Settings: The Advanced Video Settings menu offers further adjustment of the TV's video image.
      • Brightness: You can increase or decrease the brightness of an image by adjusting the TV's Brightness, Contrast, Gamma (adjusts light/dark balance), Black Level, and Black Adjust (enhances black areas).
      • Color: You can tailor the color of an image by adjusting the TV's Color, Hue, Color Temperature (white balance), Color Space (sets color reproduction range), or Live Color (produces vivid colors).
      • Clarity: You can improve the clarity of an image by adjusting the TV's Sharpness, Reality Creation (increases clarity), Resolution (increases detail), Smooth Gradation (prevents false contours) and Noise reduction (removes noise).
      • Motion: Activate Sony's Motionflow technology to reduce motion blur and judder. CineMotion provides improved picture movement and reduces picture blur and graininess for film-based content, like Blu-ray & DVD.

Light Sensor & Advanced Contrast Enhancer (ACE): The TV's built-in Light Sensor automatically adjusts the picture brightness based on the amount of light in the room. As a result, you can enjoy automatic customized picture brightness and save energy without lifting a finger. The televisions Advance Contrast Enhancer (ACE) automatically adjusts backlight and contrast to the most suitable setting judging from the brightness of the screen. This setting is especially effective for dark scenes, and will increase the contrast distinction for the darker picture scenes.

Live Color Technology: Powered by an image processor using an algorithm specially developed by Sony, Live Color is able to reproduce incredibly vivid colors on screen. With four user-adjustable settings available (High/Medium/Low/Off), you can choose just how vivid you want your images to be. Whether it's a brilliant blue sky or a bright red rose, everything stands out so much more with Live Color.

24pTrue Cinema (24p Input Capability): Many movies are filmed at 24 frames per second (fps) and prime time TV programs are video taped at 24p. Seizing on an opportunity, some studios are taking a purist approach and encoding high definition video content such as Blu-ray Disc in 24p. Sony wisely takes advantage of this by including 24p input capability via HDMI on this television producing images that are smooth and natural looking.

    Audio Features

ARC (Audio Return Channel): The Audio Return Channel within the television's HDMI 3 input enables the TV, via a single HDMI cable, to send audio data "upstream" to an A/V receiver; increasing user flexibility and eliminating the need for any separate S/PDIF audio connection. This feature allows audio to be sent from the television to your A/V receiver through the same HDMI cable already being used to send audio/video to the television. This eliminates the need for extra cables connected to the TV. ARC allows audio from the TV tuner, Network connection, inserted USB device, HDMI inputs, or any analog connected device to be heard through your ARC compatible AV receiver via the television's HDMI ARC input.

    • The audio from the TV's tuner, HDMI inputs, USB ports, and Android TV apps can pass as Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby Digital, DTS, or 2ch PCM.
    • Analog connected & DLNA compliant devices will be output audio at 2ch PCM only.

Note: Both the television and the receiver must support ARC for this function to work properly. When connecting an AV receiver that is compatible with Audio Return Channel (ARC), connect it to the TV's HDMI 3 input. If connecting a system that is incompatible Audio Return Channel (ARC), an additional audio connection via Digital Audio Out (Optical) is necessary.

Audio Outputs: The Sony Ultra-HD TV offers analog and digital audio outputs, as well as Bluetooth A2DP.

    • Digital Audio (Dolby Digital/DTS): The optical digital output terminal will output Dolby Digital/DTS (when available) or 2 channel PCM. The digital optical output terminal only sends an audio signal in Dolby Digital/DTS when receiving Dolby Digital/DTS surround sound from a digital broadcast channel through the tuner, network apps, HDMI inputs, and USB ports on the TV. The optical digital audio output will only output in 2ch stereo from sources connected to the TV via RCA.
    • Headphone/Analog Output: The TV's 3.5mm analog output can be used to connect a set of headphones or as an audio output to connect your home theater receiver or soundbar system. You will need a minijack-to-RCA adapter (sold separately) to make a stereo RCA connection between the television and your AV receiver. The TV's analog audio output terminal will output 2ch audio from any of the television's source inputs. You can set the TV's analog output to Fixed or Variable.
    • Bluetooth A2DP: The TV supports Bluetooth A2DP, allowing you to stream audio from the television's built-in and connected sources to a Bluetooth-enabled set of headphones or speakers (only one headphone, one speaker, or one pair of speakers can be connected). Bluetooth headphone volume level can be controlled from both the TV's remote and headphones. AV Sync allows you to adjust the delay between the picture and sound. Sony doesn't guarantee compatibility with all models of Bluetooth headphones.
Note: You can setup the TV to output sound from the TV speakers, the headphone output, and Bluetooth at the same time (this does not include the optical digital output, HDMI ARC, or when the analog output is not set to headphone). Or, you can setup the TV to only output audio from a single output terminal.

S-Force Front Surround: S-Force Front Surround mimics the way the brain correlates sound sources to create proper volume, time lag, and sound wave spectrum; using only left and right speaker channels. By naturally emulating three-dimensional sound fields, you'll enjoy rich, high-fidelity audio across a wider listening area.

ClearAudio+: ClearAudio+ fine-tunes TV sound for an immersive experience that seems to surround you. Hear music, dialog, and surround effects with greater clarity and separation, whatever you're watching.

Digital Sound Enhancement Engine (DSEE): Low-resolution Internet video and other heavily compressed audio files don't always sound so great. A large amount of information gets thrown away when digital audio is compressed. With Digital Sound Enhancement Engine (DSEE) technology, lost frequency components (especially high frequencies) are restored for natural sound with a more spacious feel.

Clear Phase: Sony uses a powerful computer model to analyze and compensate for inaccuracies in speaker response. It does this by "sampling" the speaker frequency with higher precision. This information is fed back to cancel out any peaks or dips in the speaker's natural response; resulting in pure, natural audio with smooth, even reproduction of all frequencies.

EQ: The TV offers four EQ preset sound modes - Standard, Cinema, Music, and Sports. The TV is also equipped with a 7-band EQ (125Hz, 250Hz, 500Hz, 1kHz, 2kHz, 4kHz, 8kHz). You can adjust the level of each band between -12 to +12 dB.

Voice Zoom & Night Mode: The Voice Zoom feature makes voices clearer by lowering background sound. Night mode provides a clear sound at a low volume levels.

Volume Offset & Auto Volume: Volume Offset adjusts the volume level of the current input relative to other inputs. The Advanced Auto Volume function keeps the volume level constant across all programs and advertisements.

TV Position: The speakers of this TV provide different sound images according to how you position the television. You can select between "Table-Top Stand" or "Wall Mount" to provide the best sound quality based on the television's placement.

Product reviews from the Crutchfield Labs

Sony has put some nice improvements in their X900F line of TVs, including their X1 Extreme processing chip that used to be found in only their top-tier TVs. They've upgraded the backlighting system...

    Crutchfield asked
    Why did you buy this?

After a great deal of research, I determined this was a great value given the specs associated with the TV. I was able to look at the TV in a store and, when a paring to the XBR-65X850, it was clear that the 65X900 had far and away the best picture. The picture clarity, the brightness, and the blacks were incredible. [ William  Feb 02, 2019 ]
TV had great reviews and best backlight tech outside of oled [ Brian  Jan 12, 2019 ]
    excellent brand and good reviews. [ JOSEPH P  Jan 09, 2019 ]
This TV seems to offer the best value for a 65" TV. It doesn't require the same gambles on longevity/panel selection as Vizio and TCL, and it has better quality/value than its nearest Samsung competitors. The NU8000 loses on picture quality, and while the Q8FN has great image quality, it loses for being a bit overpriced. This is despite the fact that Samsung fills their TVs with ads. I don't use the Smart features directly on TVs, but Samsung still loses points for those ads. [ Eric  Jan 03, 2019 ]
SONY best picture and Crutchfield is best in the business [ John  Dec 26, 2018 ]

Sony reliability and outstanding picture quality [ LADD  Dec 17, 2018 ]
Because sony is the best [ brian  Dec 16, 2018 ]
Preferred this unit to a OLED because of the burnout effect on OLED. Image quality is great and the chip processor is much faster than previous year model [ Luis  Dec 13, 2018 ]
Cause Bo knows... [ James Lee  Dec 07, 2018 ]
All reviews state that the Sony has more natural colors than comparable brands. I also prefer android networking. [ Jerry M.  Dec 04, 2018 ]
It was the best picture without spending the huge bucks on an OLED of the same size. Also had the features I wanted. Look forward to enjoying this for many years. [ Jeff  Dec 01, 2018 ]
Hasn't bought a tv in 12 years, it was time for an upgrade [ James  Dec 01, 2018 ]

I am returning the Samsung QN65Q65FN due to significant image stuttering, especially during football games. This TV has received excellent reviews for motion handling, [ J  Nov 27, 2018 ]
Ratings and review from Crutchfield [ ROBERT  Nov 27, 2018 ]
Last year, I bought the SONY XBR55X900E 4K TV, and I was impressed enough with the performance that when it came time to buy another TV, Sony was on my short list. Research brought me to the X900F series, which I fully expect to be as outstanding for the price as the 900E is. [ RONALD A  Nov 26, 2018 ]
First I need to replace an aging television. Second, I based my choice on reviews posted and the short film that was presented = which was very helpful. [ William  Nov 25, 2018 ]
    Reviews [ Paul  Nov 25, 2018 ]
Recommended by most websites as the best bang for your buck under 65 inches category. Best alternative to OLED at a lower price point without compromise on quality. Went to a local electronics store to compare to Samsung Q6FN 65" priced @ $1297.99. First thing we noticed is the Q6FN was a lot brighter than the X900F. But as we stayed longer to compare the 2, the X900F produced more details and blacks which made watching much more pleasant. I think Q6FN is good for gaming and X900F for movies. After owning several Samsung TVs I feel Sony has a more dependable and better picture quality TV. Purchase a 55" Sony This year and are very happy with the picture and features. [ Henry  Nov 24, 2018 ]
High ratings at Crutchfield and at Rtings . com as well as Sony quality experience. [ Michael  Nov 24, 2018 ]

Best picture for the price. Replacing Sony that still has a great picture after 8 years. Your and other reviews. Also, speaking to Brooke and getting the Crutchfield story. [ Kenneth  Nov 23, 2018 ]

Online reviews, Crutchfield service. [ Richard  Nov 05, 2018 ]
I currently have a Sony KDL52XBR4 television that is 10 years old and still works fine. I wanted to upgrade to 4K and choosing Sony was a no brainer with my past satisfaction and all the positive reviews on the new XBR65X900F television. The OLED televisions have excellent displays but the excessive price and risk of a permanent burn in made the Sony XBR65X900F an easy choice. [ G Mon  Oct 29, 2018 ]
I have been looking at this TV (and earlier, similar models from Sony) for over a year at a local big box store. The quality of picture is what sold me on it. Plus, I have had Sony TVs for literally decades and they have never let me down and they have always delivered what I was looking for. [ DOUG  Oct 21, 2018 ]
Declined oleds because of burn in risks, and Samsung has horrible customer service...after reading reviews this was the next best option in a decent price range. Have an older bravia already and have had pretty good luck with it. [ Dylan  Oct 04, 2018 ]
After much research this seems to be one of the best non-OLED 4k TVs [ Jeremy  Sep 21, 2018 ]
The XBR-65X900F's picture quality is exceptional from all viewing angles, which was definitely not the case with my previous XBR-65 (Sony really dropped the ball on that model). I purchased from Crutchfield because it was a no-brainer -- Crutchfield truly cares about their customers and it shows. [ P  Sep 17, 2018 ]
I have always valued and enjoyed SONY XBR televisions of which I have had three. My 65th birthday is coming up so what better way to celebrate than by buying myself a birthday present I have wanted for a long time. My first SONY 65" XBR HDTV!!! [ Edwin  Aug 30, 2018 ]

    Impressed by the display @ store. [ Jesse  Jun 11, 2018 ]
High ratings, good price and it's a Sony. My 10 year old 46" XBR still works perfectly. I expect that the processing is better than the other brands and watching broadcast (cable) TV is what this will be most used for. My expectations are high. [ Doug  Jun 11, 2018 ]

We can help with that for areas around our two retail stores in Virginia. Outside of those areas, we don't have any business partners to recommend, but we can still help you. We have an installer finder on our site that allows local installers to list themselves so you can search for the one's in your area. I have not used the Dolby Vision. I primarily use Dish Network and a HD Antenna and get great image quality from both. We watch very few movies. [ Edward  Nov 15, 2018 ]
Yes it has Dolby vision [ brandon  Nov 15, 2018 ]
This tv has great dolby vision with a firmware update from sony. [ Jim  Nov 14, 2018 ]
I don't have an exact height, but the BOSE 300 Soundbar fits nicely under it, and it is 2.25" [ John  Sep 26, 2018 ]

2 5/8" to the bottom of TV. Cannot be taller because it will obstruct the IR signal from the remite control. [ Tom  Sep 25, 2018 ]
I have a stand with tv mount. The bottom of the tv is 9 1/2 inches from top of tv stand. The center channel is 6 inches high and i have 1 1/2 inch iso pads under center channel. The top of the center channel is 2 inches from bottom of tv. [ Jim  Sep 25, 2018 ]
    2 5/8" [ RICK  Sep 25, 2018 ]
In my case I had to raise the TV with the stand by 1 and 1/2 inches using two blocks of wood in order to have enough space for the remote control device to be line of sight with the remote eye in the very bottom of the bezel of the TV screen and because I located a new Klipsch Sound Bar on the piece of furniture on which the TV is sitting and it is 3 and 3/4 inches high so now the TV with the stand and blocks of wood are 4 inches off the top of the cabinet and everything works very well and I am very pleased with the TV as well as the Sound bar with a wireless subwoofer. Hope this answers your question. [ LARRY H  Sep 25, 2018 ]
The Sony X900F will work to transmit audio to the Sonos Playbar via the optical digital audio output. However, the TV wouldn't be able to transmit audio wirelessly via Bluetooth and from the digital audio output simultaneously. I am not a gamer [ Edward  Aug 23, 2018 ]
    Haven't hooked it up to a PS4 yet. Sorry [ JOHN T  Aug 22, 2018 ]
    I don't know. I do not play video games. [ CAL  Aug 22, 2018 ]
    Sorry, I don't know. I don't use the set for gaming. [ ROBERT  Aug 22, 2018 ]
Yes it looks as if they will change just fine. [ Jim  Jul 16, 2018 ]
There is no way to swap the left and right legs. The TV is so great that it may be worth it to get a new stand. [ Terry  Jul 16, 2018 ]
Hi, I had the same concerns and ]yes you can. I did use them pointing outward. My sound bar covered the cartoon feet nicely. They are very sturdy. [ ROBERT  Jul 16, 2018 ]
I'm not sure. Setup literature uses no words, only drawings. From the drawing, it appears to me that switching is possible (the location of the bolts appears to be indifferent to which leg goes where). The tv is way too heavy and awkward for me to try the switch here. Sorry. [ JOHN K  Jul 16, 2018 ]
Looks possible. But I would not do this. There is a weight / stability issue with re directing the feet. [ CAL  Jul 16, 2018 ]
I think so but it would be risky for the stability of the tv. The legs are 45 inches wide when used pointing outward. [ Thomas  Jul 16, 2018 ]
The TV does not provide a picture-in-picture option. It does have a "Jump" feature that will quickly switch between the last selected channel or input. [ Ryan  Jun 29, 2018 ]  Staff
I'm afraid we don't have enough information on the entire 2018 TV lineup at this time to determine if they will support the new ATSC 3 standards. Please check back with a Crutchfield Advisor by phone (888.955.6000) or online chat in the near future for any updates. [ Larry  Apr 17, 2018 ]  Staff
