The Sony DAV-FR10W is an integrated system that includes a slot-loaded, 5-disc
DVD/SACD/Video CD/Audio CD changer/receiver, floor-standing front and surround
speakers, a matching center channel, and a twin-drive subwoofer. The surround
speakers are wireless, so you can enjoy rich, enveloping surround sound without
running speaker cable all around your room. Using a small transmitter, Sony's DIAT technology sends uncompressed digital audio signals to your surround
speakers through the air. The supplied
remote control can control this unit, plus multiple brands of TVs and cable
System: The DVD changer section of the integrated receiver/DVD changer
consists of a playing unit and a "stocker", which transports the discs to the
disc slot and playing unit. When discs are not being played, they are stored in
Note: You cannot use 3-inch (8 cm) discs in this unit.
Amplifier: This unit is powered by the S-Master Full Digital Amplifier. It
is designed to be highly efficient, producing minimal heat, while taking up 1/4
of the space of conventional amplifiers.
Super Audio CD:
The DAV-FR10W is equipped with a DSD (Direct Stream Digital) decoder to enable
SACD playback. DSD encodes music at 2,822,400 samples per second, allowing you
to hear sound with incredible detail and clarity. Many Super Audio CDs have
multi-channel and 2-channel SACD playback layers as well as a conventional CD
playback layer. In the Stop mode, you can select which layer of the disc you
wish to play.
Output: This unit may be set to output a progressive scan or interlaced
video signal from the component video output. Progressive-scan picture quality
is more film-like, with more fine detail and less flicker. Progressive-scan
viewing requires a TV with a progressive scan compatible component video input.

Surround Back Decoding: This
function lets you select the decoding mode for the surround back signals of the
multi-channel input stream. When you select "Auto" and the input stream contains
6.1-channel information, the appropriate decoder is applied to decode the
surround back signal (Dolby Digital EX, DTS Matrix, or DTS Discrete decoder).
When you select "Matrix", Dolby Digital EX or DTS-ES is applied to decode the surround
back signal regardless of the 6.1-channel (or 5.1-channel) information. When
"Off" is selected, no surround back decoding is performed.
surround back channel output is preamp level only, and requires a self-powered
speaker or a separate amplifier and passive speaker.
Auto Format Direct: The auto
decoding function automatically detects the type of audio signal being input
(Dolby Digital, DTS, or standard 2-channel stereo), and performs the proper
decoding if necessary. This mode presents the sound as it was recorded/encoded,
without adding any effects (reverberation). If there are no low frequency
signals, such as Dolby Digital LFE, it will generate a low frequency signal for
output to the subwoofer.
2-Channel Stereo: In addition
to the surround modes, you can select the 2-Channel Stereo mode. This mode
outputs the sound from the front left and right speakers and subwoofer only.
Standard stereo sources completely bypass the sound field processing.
Multi-channel surround formats are downmixed to two channels.
MP3 Playback: This unit will
play MP3 files recorded onto CD-ROM, CD-R and CD-RW discs using the ISO 9660
level 1/level 2 and Joliet formats. Each disc can have a maximum of 99 albums
and each album can have a maximum of 250 tracks.
JPEG Playback: This unit will
play JPEG files recorded onto CD-ROM, CD-R and CD-RW discs using the ISO 9660
level 1/level 2 and Joliet formats. All JPEG files on a disc can be played back
in a slide show. Additionally, you can rotate any selected image 90 degrees
clockwise or counterclockwise. Each disc can have a maximum of 99 albums and
each album can have a maximum of 250 images.
Resume Play: This
feature allows you to resume playback of a disc from the point where you last
stopped. The stopping point is cleared from memory if you remove the disc,
change the play mode, change the setting on the Setup Menu, or press the Stop
button a second time.
PBC (Playback Control) Playback:
PBC playback allows you to play Video CDs interactively by following the menu on
the TV screen.
Audio DRC: The Audio DRC
(Dynamic Range Compression) feature is useful for watching movies late at night
by letting you narrow the dynamic range of the sound track. This feature is also
known as Late Night or Midnight Mode, and applies only to Dolby Digital-encoded
This unit allows you to set two kinds of playback restrictions for discs using
Parental Control and Custom Parental Control. Parental Control allows you to
restrict playback of any disc according to a predetermined level. You can select
a parental control rating from 0-8, which is protected by a 4-digit password.
Using the same registered password, Custom Parental Control allows you to set
playback restrictions for a specific disc. You can set the same Custom Parental
Control password for up to 25 discs.
Sleep Timer: The sleep timer
switches the unit off after a specified amount of time. The sleep timer can be
adjusted from 10 to 90 minutes in 10-minute increments.
Display Dimmer: You can set the
display to one of two brightness levels.
This system has a PLL quartz-locked digital synthesizer AM/FM Tuner. You can
store up to 20 FM and 10 AM station presets so that you always have easy access
to your favorite stations without having to tune them in manually each time. You
can assign a name of up to 8 characters for each preset. FM tuning is done in
0.1MHz steps and AM tuning is done in 9kHz or 10kHz steps.
Subwoofer: The DAV-FR10W system
is equipped with a Digital Direct Twin-Drive subwoofer, which features two
6-3/8" cone woofers in a bass-reflex enclosure. One woofer fires toward the
front, while the other woofer is down-firing. The main unit provides two
separate amplifier channels for the subwoofer, each with an output of 115 watts.
The subwoofer has twin 16' speaker wires hardwired to the enclosure.
Front/Surround Speakers: The
floor-standing front and surround speakers each use a 1" balanced-dome tweeter
and a 2-7/8" midrange driver in a bass-reflex enclosure. Each speaker is
integrated into a tall, slender enclosure/stand with the drivers covered by a
28" tall x 3.25" wide, non-removable, dark gray cloth grille. The speakers
feature a set of spring clip terminals on the bottom of the 10" diameter base.
The dimensions of the speakers are:
- Width: 3.525"
- Depth: 2.92"
- Height: 42.875"
(Overall height with base: 43.75")
- Diameter: 10"
- Height: 0.875"
Sound: Using a small IR transmitter, the main unit sends uncompressed digital audio signals to
the IR receiver built into the left surround speaker. The left surround speaker
has a built-in 2-channel amplifier (114 watts x 2) that also powers the right
surround speaker. The right surround speaker connects to the left surround
speaker using the provided speaker wire. The supplied DIR-R2 IR receiver can be
used if the IR receiver in the left surround speaker cannot receive the signal
sent by the transmitter. To receive power, the left surround speaker must be
plugged into a wall outlet.
Center Channel Speaker:
The center channel speaker uses a 1" balanced-dome tweeter and a 2-7/8" midrange
driver in a bass-reflex enclosure. The center speaker has an integrated
non-adjustable stand, and a set of rear-mounted spring clip terminals for use
with the supplied speaker wire. The drivers are covered by a non-removable, dark
gray cloth grille.
Speaker Setup: To obtain the
best possible sound, you can set the unit for the size of speakers you have
connected and their distance from the listening position. You should also adjust
the level and balance of the speakers to the same level using the test tone. You
can indicate if you have placed the surround speakers behind or to the side of
the listening position. If you do not connect the center or surround speakers,
you can configure the unit to adjust the output signals to the connected
speakers. After setting the front speaker distance, the default for the other
speakers is set accordingly. The available distance settings for the speakers
are as follows:
- Front: 3 to 23 feet in 1
- Center: can be moved up to
5 feet closer than the front speaker distance (in 1 foot increments)
- Surround: can be moved up
to 15 feet closer than the front speaker distance (in 1 foot increments)
- Surround Back: can be
moved up to 15 feet closer than the front speaker distance (in 1 foot
Video-shielding: The front
speakers, surround speakers, center channel and subwoofer are video-shielded,
allowing them to be placed near your television without causing picture

color-coded proprietary plug on the other for easy hookup.
Multibrand Remote: The
DAV-FR10W comes with a remote (RM-SP350) that is pre-programmed to operate this
system and a number of functions on different brands of TVs and cable boxes. The
remote has a slide-down panel that reveals more controls.
Inputs and Outputs
Speaker Outputs: The
changer/receiver uses color-coded 2-pin proprietary jacks for all channels. Speaker wires, terminated with color-coded plugs, are
supplied. The speaker plugs can be removed for attachment to other speaker wire
if desired. The plugs will fit virtually any commercially available speaker wire
from 18 to 22-gauge.
Surround Back Output: The
DAV-FR10W supplies a preamp output for the surround back channel. If you wish to
add a surround back speaker to this system, you will need a self-powered speaker
or a separate amplifier to power a passive speaker. The surround back channel is
active when you input a 6.1-channel signal such as Dolby Digital EX, DTS-ES
Discrete or DTS-ES Matrix. With the Surround Back decoding mode set at "SB
Matrix", you will also hear audio from the Surround Back channel with Dolby
Digital and DTS 5.1-channel signals and some 2-channel sources. Audio Inputs: This unit
features two analog (stereo RCA) audio inputs, labeled "Video" and "SAT",
plus an optical digital input labeled "SAT." These inputs allow you to input
audio signals from a VCR or satellite receiver. If you connect the satellite
receiver via the digital input, you can input the audio signal from the TV
through the system if desired.
Video Monitor Outputs: You can
connect your TV to the system via composite, S-Video, or component video cables,
depending upon the type of video input on the TV. The component video outputs
can be set to progressive scanning for a better picture, if the connected TV is
compatible with HDTV or EDTV signals.
