General Features

Memory Stick Compatibility: This camcorder is compatible with Memory Stick, Memory Stick Duo, MagicGate Memory Stick, MagicGate Memory Stick Duo, Memory Stick PRO, and  Memory Stick PRO Duo. All types of Memory Stick can be used to record still pictures and moving images. Although this unit is compatible with MagicGate Memory Stick and Memory Stick PRO media, it cannot be used to record or play back music protected by copyright signals. A Memory Stick Duo adapter is required to use Memory Stick Duo media with this camcorder.

USB Terminal: Using the USB cable and software provided, you can process and organize still images on your PC.

IEEE 1394 DV Terminal: The camcorder is equipped with a 4-pin DV IN/OUT terminal that conforms to IEEE 1394 standards. It takes just a single digital cable to transfer or copy your videos in pure digital form to your DV compatible computer.

2.5" Touch Panel LCD Display: The DCR-TV460 features a flip-out 2.5" LCD monitor with 123,200 pixels for excellent viewing clarity. In addition, the LCD display doubles as an "on-screen" touch panel, allowing you to navigate through the menu system by touching the LCD screen. The flip-out panel opens up to a 90-degree angle from the left side of the camcorder. Once open, it can rotate forward up to 180 degrees, or backward up to 90 degrees. It can also be rotated forward 180 degrees, then closed with the LCD screen facing outward. The brightness of the LCD can be adjusted, depending on the lighting conditions.

Self-Timer Recording: If you want to record yourself, the self-timer recording feature will automatically start recording 10 seconds after being activated. Using the self-timer, you can record moving images on a tape and Memory Stick, plus, you can record still images on a Memory Stick.

Easy Handycam: When Easy Handycam mode is selected, most of the camera settings are set to automatic mode, leaving access to only a few basic functions. Using this mode, you can record movies on a tape or still images on a Memory Card.

Auto/Manual Focus: You can select automatic or manual focusing. When using autofocus, you can choose to focus on a subject in the center of the screen or with Spot Focus, focus on an off-centered object.

Zoom: The camcorder has a 20x optical zoom for bringing your subject up close. It also features a 49.5x digital zoom, to give you a total zoom capability of 990x. The digital zoom can be set to 40x or 990x, or turned off if desired. Because the picture is processed digitally, the picture quality deteriorates the more you zoom in. The power zoom lever can be moved slightly for a slow zoom, or moved further for a faster zoom.

Program AE: You can choose one of the following Program AE modes to suit you specific shooting requirements:

  • Spotlight: this mode prevents people's faces from appearing excessively white when they have a strong light source shining on them
  • Portrait: brings out the subject while creating a soft background
  • Sports: minimizes camera shake on fast-moving subjects
  • Beach & Ski: prevents people's faces from appearing dark in strong light or reflected light
  • Sunsetmoon: allows you to maintain atmosphere when you are recording sunsets, general night views, firework displays and neon signs
  • Landscape: for recording distant subjects

Backlight: When you shoot a subject with the light source behind the subject or a subject with a light background, you can use the backlight function.

Flexible Spot Meter: Spot metering lets you adjust the exposure to the subject, even when the subject is a backlit or when there is strong contrast between the subject and the background.

Exposure: The exposure can be adjusted manually or automatically.

PB ZOOM: You can enlarge movies recorded on a tape, or still images recorded on a Memory Stick.

Built-in Light: The camcorder has a built-in light that can be set to one of the following modes: Auto (automatically turns on and off according to the ambient light), On (always turn on), or Off.

Camcorder Features

SteadyShot Picture Stabilization: SteadyShot picture stabilization system uses motion sensors to remove unwanted picture shake. The SteadyShot system controls an even broader range of shake frequencies, to achieve an even higher level of smoothness. The SteadyShot feature may be turned on or off.

Super NightShot Plus: This unit is equipped with NightShot Plus and Super NightShot Plus, advanced versions of Sony's NightShot, which allow you to shoot a subject in complete darkness (0 lux) using infra-red technology. With NightShot Plus, you can record natural color images in low-light conditions without the blurring common with other low-light recording systems. Super NightShot Plus records at a maximum of 16 times more sensitivity than NightShot Plus. You can make the colors deeper by using the built-in infrared NightShot light. You can also record clearer pictures in color by activating the Color Slow Shutter function.

Wide Mode: You can record a 16:9 aspect ratio picture, which will play back properly on a 16:9 widescreen television. As you are recording, black bands appear on the top and bottom of the LCD screen.

Fader Modes: You can select from "Black Fader", "White Fader", "Mosaic Fader", and "Monotone" (gradually changes from black and white to color) fader modes. You can add these modes to currently recorded pictures for fading in or out. In addition, you can choose "Overlap", "Wipe", and "Dot Fader" for fading in only.

Picture Effects: You can select one of the following Picture effect modes:

  • Negative Art: the color and brightness of the picture are reversed
  • Sepia: picture appears in sepia
  • B&W: picture appears in monochrome (black and white)
  • Solarize: picture appears as an illustration with strong contrast
  • Pastel: picture appears as a pale pastel drawing
  • Mosaic: picture appears mosaic

Digital Effects: You can choose from the following Digital effects:

  • Still: allows you to record a still image that is superimposed on a moving picture
  • Flash Motion: allows you to record still pictures successively at constant intervals
  • Luminance Key: allows you to replace a brighter portion of a still picture with a moving picture
  • Trail: allows you to record pictures with a "trailing image" while audio is recorded normally
  • Slow Shutter: use if you want to record a dark picture more brightly; shutter speed options are 1/30, 1/15, 1/8, and 1/4
  • Old Movie: this camcorder simulates an "old movie" by automatically setting the wide mode to on, picture effect to Sepia, and choosing an appropriate shutter speed

Interval Recording: You can make a time-lapse recording by setting your camcorder to automatically record and standby sequentially. You can adjust the interval between recording to 30 seconds, 1 minute, 5 minutes, or 10 minutes. You can adjust the recording time to 0.5 second, 1 second, 1.5 seconds, or 2 seconds.

Frame Recording: You can make a recording with a stop-motion animated effect using frame recording. To create this effect, alternately move the subject a little and make a frame recording.

Superimposing a Title: You can select one of the eight preset titles or one of two custom titles to superimpose on the recording. The following preset titles are stored in memory: Hello!, Happy Birthday, Happy Holidays, Congratulations!, Our Sweet Baby, Wedding, Vacation, or The End. You can also create two of your own titles, each having a maximum of 20 characters. For all titles, you can select the color, size, and position.

Edit Search and Rec Review: Using Edit Search, you can search for the next recording start point in camera mode. Rec Review allows you to view a few seconds of the scene recorded just before you stopped the tape.

Zero Set Memory Function: While the unit is in playback mode, you may select a point on the tape to quickly locate later; once a point is selected, you may fast forward or rewind the tape and the unit will automatically stop at the selected point. This feature works only for tapes recorded using the Digital8 system.

Date Search: You can automatically search for the point where the recording date changes and start playback from that point.

Digital Program Editing: This function allows you to select a sequence of up to 20 scenes and have the camcorder control dubbing (assemble editing) when connected to a VCR using either the i.LINK jack or the analog output. The camcorder is pre-coded for multibrand VCR control so many brands of VCRs can be controlled.

USB Streaming: Live and recorded video can be streamed from the camcorder's USB output to a USB input on Windows-equipped computers using the supplied USB cable.

Note: The streaming feature does not work with Macintosh computers.

Signal Convert Function: When analog images and sound from an external source are input to the analog A/V input of this unit, the signal may be passed through this unit to a PC with an i.LINK input. Analog signals sent through the analog A/V input are converted, on the fly, to digital signals that can be sent from the i.LINK digital output to a PC equipped with an i.LINK input. Copy protected images cannot be passed through the camcorder in this manner.

Time Base Correction: This feature compensates for unwanted picture jitter by storing the video in a memory field and releasing the signal at timed intervals (used with Hi8 and 8mm recordings).

Digital Noise Reduction: DNR reduces picture noise (used with Hi8 and 8mm recordings).

Digital Camera Features

Memory Photo Recording: This camcorder allows you to record still images on a Memory Stick. You can select the Field or Frame mode in still image recording. The camcorder compensates for camera shake when recording moving subjects in the Field mode. The camcorder records in high-quality in the Frame mode.

Recording Still Images on a Memory Stick while Recording on a Tape: You can record still images on a Memory Stick in the tape recording or standby mode. By pressing the photo button during tape recording or standby, the camcorder will capture a still image and store it on the Memory Stick.

Recording Images from a Tape as Still Images: The camcorder can read moving picture data recorded on a Digital8 tape and record it as a still image on a Memory Stick. The camcorder can also capture moving picture data from an external component connected to the A/V, S-video, and DV jacks.

MPEG Movie EX: Moving images with mono audio may be recorded to a Memory Stick in either 320 x 240 or 160 x 112 image sizes. Except for the capacity of the Memory Stick being used, there is no time limit on the length of movie clips recorded to Memory Stick; if desired, the entire capacity of a Memory Stick may be used for a single movie clip.

Interval Still Image Recording: This feature allows you to record still images at regular intervals. You can adjust the interval between recording to 1 minute, 5 minutes, or 10 minutes.

Digital Program Editing: This function allows you to select a sequence of up to 20 scenes and record them onto a Memory Stick. The picture and sound are recorded up to the full capacity of the Memory Stick.

Memory Photo Playback: You can play back still images recorded on a Memory Stick one at a time, or, by selecting the Index screen, you can view six images simultaneously.

MPEG Movie Playback: You can play back moving pictures recorded on a Memory Stick one at a time, or, by selecting the Index screen, you can view six still images from the movies simultaneously.

Slide Show: This function allows you to continuously play back images on the Memory Stick in sequence.

Memory Mix: You can superimpose a still image that you have recorded on a Memory Stick on top of a moving image you are recording. You can select from one of the following effects:

  • Memory Luminance Key: allows you to swap a brighter area of a still image, such as a handwritten illustration or a title, with a moving picture
  • Camera Chroma Key: allows you to superimpose a moving picture on a still image that can be used as a background
  • Memory Chroma Key: allows you to swap only the blue area of a still image, such as an illustration or a frame, with a moving picture

Memory Overlap: This feature allows you to fade from a still image on the Memory Stick to the movie currently being recorded on the tape.

PictBridge: You can print directly from the camcorder to a PictBridge-compliant printer via USB cable, even if you don't have a computer. PictBridge is an industry standard established by the Camera & Imaging Products Association (CIPA). Through the camcorder, you can select the number of copies to be printed and choose to print the date or date and time on each picture.

Exif Print (Exif 2.2): The camcorder conforms to "Exif Print", a worldwide standard. Vital camera settings and scene data are recorded to the image file when it is captured. Printers compatible with "Exif Print" are able to use this information to produce high quality photographs, exactly the way they were intended at the time of capture. This intelligent communication process also allows the printer to correct for poor lighting or mistakes, resulting in photos that can be even better than the originals.
