Nice APS-C Wide Angle Lens

Christopher from Cary, NC on 6/2/2019

I have the 16-50mm kit lens. But when you want to take pictures in a small room or you want to get more landscape into your outdoor pictures, you need a wide angle lens. For the Sony APS-C cameras, this is the perfect lens. It's super quick and produces clean clear pictures. Looking forward to taking this lens on vacation.

Pros: Quick auto focus, clear pictures

Cons: Wish the f-stop was lower to get a little more dept on some pictures

Great lens to have in your lightweight kit.

I hike a lot and I shoot landscapes. A super wide lens is a necessity for me and this matches up perfectly in size/weight with my Sony A6000 kit. My only complaint is that it doesn't come with any type of case or soft bag.

Pros: small size, lightweight

Cons: no case

Sharp lens for a wildly different perspective

Bernardo from Miami, FL on 2/19/2017

Very sharp, very wide image quality. As with any wide angle lens, you have to be very mindful about what's included in the shot and and check the corners of the image (especially for your own shadow!) as the field of view on it is extremely large. As far as build quality goes, it is absolutely excellent. It's sturdy yet light, with smooth focus and zoom rings, an included shallow hood, meant much more to protect the front element of the lens than block any stray light entering the lens sideways. This is a very fun lens that gives you a very different perspective than most kit lenses that come with included with cameras. Beware of corners, and don't put humans at the edge of the frame, and don't try to take portraits with it, as the person will look like an alien! The only thing I think could be improved is the aperture; a wider one would definitely be better for night sky long exposures.

Pros: Sharp, focuses fast, lightweight, well built, even looks good and balanced on an A6000; hood included

Cons: Could be faster (only f/4.0); pretty steep price.

Great Fun! Sony 1018 e lens

George from Greenport, NY on 8/18/2013

Great effect you get with the 10mm. Great color and contrast. Super sharp. Fun photos. Super depth of field.

Pros: Size, quality and fit and finish.

Cons: It would be nice to have a 10mm optical finder to match the lens. If you are shooting a fast moving object coming towards you shooting continuous frames, you tend to lose the object if it passes over you or by you. You would be able to keep it in frame easier with the optical finder.

I used this lens recently on a trip to Yellowstone. It was light, fast and took fine pictures on my Nex-7. It will always be in my bag.

Pros: Light, smooth, responsive, well-built

Cons: Very expensive

Product Research

Features

Optics: The Sony SEL1018 (E 10-18mm F4 OSS) super-wide-angle zoom lens is compatible with the Sony α NEX-series interchangeable lens cameras. The lens has a 35mm equivalent focal length of 15-27mm, and a 109°-76° field of view for capturing expansive landscapes.

Note: Using this lens on a full-frame camera may result in vignetting -- causing the corners of the image to become darker than the center.

Optical SteadyShot (OSS): Equipped with Optical SteadyShot (OSS), the lens compensates for blur caused by camera shake for normal handheld photography. OSS also reduces the reliance on high ISO settings when shooting in dark environments, which greatly enhances the effectiveness of the Hand-held Twilight and Anti-Motion Blur shooting modes. Optical SteadyShot gives you a 4-stop shutter speed advantage when activated.

Lens Hood: The lens includes the ALC-SH123 Lens Hood to reduce flare and ensure maximum image quality. The lens hood should be removed when using the camera's built-in flash to avoid blocking the flash light. You can store the lens hood by mounting it onto the lens backward. When installed, the lens hood adds a little less than 1-1/4" to the total length of the lens.

Focusing: The lens can be used with the NEX-series cameras in the auto-focus, direct manual focus, or manual focus modes. You can switch between focusing modes in the camera menu.

Dimensions: The lens has the following dimensions: Diameter=2.752", Length=2.7"-3.081" (3.217"-3.608" w/caps).

Customer Q&A

Q
Crutchfield asked: Why did you buy this?
A
positive reviews [ florante  Apr 26, 2016 ]
A
Looking for a WA lense, search no more. You can't go wrong with this one. Not the best in low light conditions because it is F4, but the IS compensates a tad. On daylight, it is awesome. And its versatility separates this one from the rest; wanna take a picture of a group of people, just zoom in and you are in a safer perspective zone without needing to change lenses. It will not replace a proper lense dedicated for portraits, but at least people in the picture will look like human beings. [ ANTONIO  Apr 12, 2016 ]
