About the Sony XS-GS1631C
Enjoy 3-way sound
Enjoy 3-way sound
Enjoy a new level of performance with Sony's XS-GS1631C 6-1/2" 3-way component speaker system. The package includes two 6-1/2" woofers, two 3-1/2" midrange drivers, two 1" dome tweeters, and a pair of outboard crossovers. Each woofer and midrange driver features a rigid, reinforced special aramid fiber cone that delivers focused midrange definition and strong midbass punch, even during high-volume playback.
Distinct, clean highs
The separate 1" soft dome tweeter will reveal the natural detail that your factory speakers couldn't even hope to reproduce. Included external 3-way crossovers allow you to get cleaner highs and fuller lows by sending the appropriate frequencies to the woofer, midrange driver, and tweeter. Sony also provides mounting options, so you can install your tweeters closer to your ears to achieve the best possible sound staging for your car.
Classic Sony design
If you're planning on a custom installation, Sony includes refined, black grilles for seamless integration into most car interiors. Sony has also reduced the overall mounting depth, making this system a great fit for more vehicles. These component speakers are protected by the GS Series 3-year warranty, and they'll handle up to 120 watts RMS – so go ahead and rock out.
Installation note: You'll need a pair of our universal backstraps to install the tweeters in the factory locations.

Sony XS-GS1631C reviews
Ggot this set for my 2000 S10. Mods and tweets in the dash and woofers in the doors Great set of speakers. Once dialed in they sound fantastic. Don't expect to get great Sound out of any door speaker unless you prepare the door with sound deadening and some mass loaded vinyl to create a good platform for the speakers to shine. Running these bi-amped with 75w a channel and they will get as loud as you want.
Pros: Reasonably priced. Great Sound. Efficient. Bi-amp capable. Shallow depth mounting.
Cons: As with any component y crossover, a bit big.

Great replacement for the factory 3-way components, they sound many times better. I paired these with a subwoofer so no input on low-end response, but as mids/highs, they sound great and handle a ton of power without distorting. A thin enough mid-range is hard to find for the GTIs, but this one is actually a hair thinner than the factory. The only downside is the beefy crossovers which dwarf the factory ones. There was no way to fit these inside the doors so I had to mount them on the outside; not ideal but also not overly intrusive/noticeable in daily life.
Pros: Sound great, slim-mount mid-range fits where others don't.
Cons: Large Crossover is mildly challenging to conceal.

Woofer Cones: The XS-GS1631C woofers use an MRC cone (Mica Reinforced Cellular glass fiber composite) with Aramid Fiber Matrix to reduce weight and increase rigidity, delivering full bass response.
Rubber Surrounds: For improved durability each woofer uses a rubber surround.
Tweeters: The tweeters are 1" soft synthetic fabric domes. They can be flush mounted, surface mounted, or surface mounted at an angle using the included housings.
Tweeter Mounting Dimensions:
|Frame Width||Frame Length||Cutout Diameter||Mounting Height||Mounting Depth|
|Flat Surface Mount||2.21"||2.21"||N/A||1.2"||Screw Depth|
|Angled Surface Mount||2.225"||2.44"||N/A||1.3"||Screw Depth|
Crossovers: Each crossover has high-pass (tweeter), band-pass (midrange), and low-pass (woofer) outputs. The crossover points are 500 Hz and 5 kHz. A switch inside each crossover allows you to set the tweeter output level according to your system requirements and personal preference; choose +4 dB (factory setting), 0 dB, or -2 dB. The inputs and outputs are screw terminals; they will accommodate bare wire or spade connectors up to 0.3" wide. There are two mounting holes in the base of each crossover.
Bi-amp Inputs: The 3-way crossovers have separate inputs for the woofer and midrange/tweeter; this lets you drive the system with dedicated power for the woofers, instead of sharing power. If the system is powered using only two amplifier channels, the woofer and midrange/tweeter inputs should be shorted together.
- Width: 6.27"
- Height: 1.4"
- Depth: 4"
Mounting: The woofers can be easily mounted in a variety of 6-3/4" applications. Given the required cutout, they will also fit into the opening for a typical 6-1/2" speaker (approximately 5" diameter) but the screw hole pattern is larger than a standard 6-1/2", so new holes would have to be drilled.
Specification Note: Sony's rated power spec for the XS-GS1631C is 65 watts (derived using IEC 60268-5 standards). In the manual they also list the CEA 2031 compliant RMS power as 120 watts. We've adopted the 120 watt RMS rating because CEA 2031 is the more common rating system.
