About the Sony MZ-N10

Featuring an amazingly compact and stylish magnesium body, the MZ-N10 is a perfect solution for taking your MP3s on the go — and so much more! This sleek Sony portable lets you record MP3, WMA, and WAV files from your PC to MiniDisc at up to 64 times normal playback speed, so you'll spend less time recording, and more time enjoying your tunes. (Files are stored in ATRAC™ or ATRAC3™ format.) For extra hookup convenience, you get a combination USB cradle/charging stand which connects the recorder to your PC's USB port and recharges the built-in battery, all at once. When it's time for new tunes or a fresh charge, just place the recorder onto the cradle.

The MZ-N10 isn't just for PC tunes, either. A minijack input lets you record from just about any analog or digital audio source, like a cassette deck or CD changer. A mic input lets you connect a compatible microphone (see "Accessories") to capture live sound. And since the 'N10 uses the versatile MiniDisc format, you can instantly erase individual tunes, divide or combine tracks, or rearrange the track order. Space-saving MDLP™ record mode lets you store up to 5 hours of music on a single, inexpensive 80-minute MD.

Other cool conveniences include a handy stick-style remote with a backlit LCD, Sony's G-Protection™ for skip-free playback, and a 6-band graphic equalizer for fine-tuning your sound. For marathon listening sessions, combine the unit's built-in rechargeable battery with an optional "AA" alkaline in the supplied external case, and you can enjoy up to 58 hours of continuous playback!

Features

G-Protection: G-Protection was developed to protect against sound skipping while jogging, providing a higher level of shock protection than traditional ESP. The G-Protection feature provides 15-times faster shock recovery compared to conventional shock protection systems, so it will easily outperform electronic shock protection (ESP) systems equipped with 40-second buffers. The memory buffer is refreshed so quickly, that it is virtually impossible to make an MD skip.

Recording Overview: The supplied USB interface provides all-digital transfer of MP3, WMA, and WAV audio files from your PC to MiniDisc at up to 64-times faster than real-time. The title/track information you create in the jukebox automatically will be transferred to the Net MD Recorder.

Sampling Rate Converter: This unit has a built-in sampling rate converter that will accept digital inputs from 32kHz to 48kHz. This allows you to perform a digital recording from a non-44.1kHz digital source such as a DAT or DBS unit. The sampling rate converter turns on only when a non-44.1kHz source is detected.

Long Play Recording: In addition to normal stereo recording, this unit has two long time recording modes: LP2 and LP4. When recording in LP2 stereo mode, you can record two times the normal recording time. When recording in LP4 stereo mode, you can record four times the normal recording time.

Note: Songs recorded (checked out) in LP2 or LP4 Stereo to an MD cannot be played back unless the MD player is compatible with MDLP.

Mono Recording: You may record in mono, which gives you twice the recording time per MiniDisc.

Recording Level Adjustment: The digital and analog recording levels may be set manually or automatically.

Synchro Recording: This feature allows you to automatically have the player start recording when it receives sound from the source unit. This only works when using the digital (not analog) input.

Labeling: You can label MDs and tracks you record. Each MiniDisc can accept up to 1,700 alphanumeric characters.

Erasing Tracks: You can erase a single track or the entire MiniDisc.

Dividing Tracks: You can divide a recorded track at any point simply by adding a track mark at that point.

Combining Tracks: This function allows you to combine two consecutive tracks into a single track by removing the track mark between them.

Moving Tracks: This function lets you change the order of any track.

Digital Pitch Control: This function changes the playback speed without changing the playback pitch. The playback speed can be varied from +100% to -50% the normal speed, in 13 steps.

Acoustic Sound Settings: You can create different listening environments by digitally adjusting sound resonation. The 4 preset listening environments are Studio, Live, Club and Arena.

6-band Graphic Equalizer: The 6-band graphic equalizer allows you to fine-tune your music. The EQ gives you 4 preset sound settings (Heavy, Pops, Jazz, and Unique) and 2 custom settings. The custom settings allow you to adjust the following frequencies: 100Hz, 250Hz, 630Hz, 1.6kHz, 4kHz, and 10kHz. Each frequency can be adjusted to one of the following levels: -10dB, -6dB, -3dB, 0dB, +3dB, +6dB, or +10dB.

Automatic Volume Limiter System (AVLS): The AVLS function keeps down the maximum volume to protect your hearing.

Group Function: This function allows you to categorize consecutive tracks into a group for playback, recording, or editing. This is handy if you are recording multiple artists or CDs onto one MiniDisc.

"Easy Skip" Group/Folder Function: This function allows for easy navigation between multiple file folders transferred in a playlist.

Melody Timer: This unit has a built-in alarm that can be set to go off in 1 to 99 minutes. You can select from 3 different alarm melodies.

Wired Remote/Headphones: The supplied MDR-A034 in-the-ear headphones come with an attached 19" headphone cord that is terminated with a standard stereo mini-plug. The headphones plug into the stick-style remote. The remote has an EL backlit display and fits naturally in your hand during jogging and allows you to access all essential operations using only your thumb.

Built-in Battery: This unit has a built-in rechargeable lithium-ion battery.

Battery Case: The included battery case allows you to attach one "AA" alkaline battery to this unit.

Supplied Software

SonicStage: SonicStage is an integrated software application that lets you enjoy music. Not only can you play back songs from audio sources, such as audio CDs or MDs, you can also import songs to your computer's hard drive and organize them as audio files. Furthermore, the imported songs (audio files) can be transferred to portable devices, such as a Network Walkman or Net MD Walkman. You can also write songs to CD-R or CD-RW discs to create your own original audio CDs.

Music Drive: Music Drive is SonicStage's Music Database. Music Drive is used to integrate and manage all of the audio files on a computer. Audio files can be imported to the Music Drive from various sources by performing the following operations: recording songs from an audio CD, importing audio files stored on the computer, and downloading audio files from an EMD service on the Internet. Information such as artist name, song title or jacket image can be attached to the audio track stored in the Music Drive. You can manage songs (audio files) by this information and also categorize songs using the playlist feature. Additionally, you can find a specific song by using various search criteria.

Net MD Simple Burner: Net MD Simple Burner allows you to easily record audio CDs from your CD-ROM to the MD player, without the need of storing any information on your hard drive. It will also allow you to edit and perform playback functions of your MD player through your computer.

OpenMG: OpenMG is a copyright protection technology used when importing and managing audio content from music distribution services or audio CDs. By using OpenMG compliant applications such as SonicStage, audio content can be encrypted before being stored on the hard disk of a computer so that the audio file cannot be played back on any computer other than the one it was created on. OpenMG is useful in preventing unauthorized distribution of audio content via the Internet.

RealOne Player Compatible: RealOne is a free music management system that lets you download, create playlists and transfer music to your Net MD recorder. Sonic Stage is compatible with RealOne.
