Step up your game

The way I see it, most factory car radios are "good enough," but not much more than that. If you like to set your sights a little higher, you can get a lot at a reasonable price with Sony's MEX-N4200BT CD receiver. This good-looking car stereo offers great sound, an excellent Bluetooth® feature set, and some pretty sophisticated smartphone integration options.

Your phone's music and more

My smartphone is my "go to" source for messaging, info, and entertainment, so I appreciate a car stereo that works with it intuitively. Plug your iOS device or compatible Android phone into the front USB port for access to all of your favorite music, including FLAC files. You can even use voice commands to send text messages and other tasks with both iOS and Android devices.

Pair and go with Bluetooth

Pairing is easy with Sony's Simple Secure Pairing system, and if your phone supports NFC, you can simply touch it to the receiver to pair the device. Once paired, the MEX-N4200BT's built-in Bluetooth adds a new level of convenience and capability to your car. You can talk hands-free when you get a call, plus you can stream the music stored on your mobile device wirelessly through the receiver.

Sony MEX-N4200BT

The MEX-N4200BT is a stylish addition to your dash.

Look sharp

Sharp styling is on display with this Sony. Carbon fiber accents frame the controls, and when you're getting your groove on, the Sound Synchronization feature pulses the lights to match your music. Details like a nifty sliding USB port cover round out the package.

Stellar audio

Sony's impressive Digital Reality amp delivers solid sound output and realistic audio reproduction. The 10-band EQ and frequency filters give you sound tuning options that will make your speaker setup shine.

Want to keep your steering wheel controls?

This Sony has the ability to retain the steering wheel controls in many Japanese vehicles, but we recommend using a separate SWC adapter. In all other vehicles, you'll need an adapter to retain those controls with this car stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and radio, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. You'll see the adapters that work with your vehicle when you add this receiver to your cart.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

iPod/smartphone note: If you're going to use your iPod or smartphone with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for compatibility information.

Nice unit, had some minor issues

Great sound, attractive look, not too hard to use. Had Bluetooth issues when more than one phone was paired. Fixed by removing the phone which wasn't in the car, but it it took a call to Crutchfield to actually figure out how to do that.

Pros: Bass, awesome sound via EQ, looks great in the car

Cons: Fiddly Bluetooth, still haven't gotten steering wheel controls to work.

I like it

2011 Ford F-250

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Overall a good piece of equipment for the price. It sounds good. It's a bit distracting to use while driving, but I haven't had the time to read the manual so once I do it will probably be easier to figure out how to do the things it's capable of but I don't yet know how to do. The Pandora feature is great. I've been listening to hours of great music without having to think about what to play. Installation with the Crutchfield kit was super easy. About a half hour and it was finished.

Pros: Good price for a decent receiver.

Cons: Not the most intuitive operation but once I have time to read the manual It will be easier to operate.

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I just installed this unit in a motor home. Although it was difficult to get the dashboard and kick panels off, the custom installation instructions were dead on, and led me in the right direction. The directions cannot fully compensate for a on-piece dashbaord that is almost impossible to remove without destruying it, but it certaily helps. I used the ReadHarness service, which worked perfectly. Once I got the dash off, installing the head unit was a snap. So far, the head unit seems to be working well. Pairing the phone was pretty easy. Some other functions are not really self-intuitive, but it's easy to operate the head unit once you're used to it. Phone calls are very clear using the bluetooth function, and I was easily able to stream music from my smartphone. This little head unit has a lot of features packed into it!

Pros: Lots of features, easy to install.

Cons: No serious flaws that I can think of.

First, I'm not a techie. However, I can say that I think this was a great buy. The sound is much better than my factory radio, even playing through the original factory 20 year old speakers. Bluetooth connects quickly and flawlessly with great sound quality. The same can be said for the aux input. The remote is a nice touch, but unnecessary for me. What really surprised me was the quality of the built-in mic. Phone calls using bluetooth were heard clearly without distortion on the other end, though someone commented that it sounded a little "tinny", but still clear. There is an input on the back of the unit should you want to buy an external mic, but I don't think it's necessary for most users.

MEX series always great

2000 Honda Civic

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

This is the third SONY MEX series radio I have installed in mine or my children's cars. They work very well, and handle bluetooth handshakes when you get back in the car very smoothly. I tried another brand once, and noticed the difference. If your space or budget constrain you to 1 DIN, this is arguably the best one.

Pros: Bluetooth works much better than others. Speaker is built in, so it is easy, but it is also very effective.

Cons: MEX series has always had very closely packed row of small buttons. Would be better to have a smaller display or fewer but larger, better defined buttons.

Perfect Upgrade

Aimee from Wadsworth, OH on 1/8/2019

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

This is a great stereo and the perfect upgrade from my factory set. I love that it works with my Apple products. Sound is decent. Could be better but that may be my speakers rather than the unit itself. Connected easily and is very user friendly. I only have two complaints: I can't use the map function on my phone when it's connected to BT Audio and the sound from the BT Audio isn't as clear or rich as the sound from the Tuner or a CD. Overall a great stereo at a great price.

Pros: Price User Friendly Bright Display Connects Easily to Bluetooth

Cons: Map Function on Phone Doesn't Work When Connected to Bluetooth Bluetooth Audio Playback Not as Good as Tuner or CD

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Installation was not difficult. As soon as done, I downloaded SongPal App for android phone. I connected this receiver with SongPal music center App. Once connected Music Center took over entire control of the receiver. I could play musics from CD, iPod, My music Library in the phone, Spotify, Pandora, iHeart Radio and other music sources while I was using Google map navigation. I could switch the source thru SongPal, easier than using native receiver control. Wonderful receiver. Do I need android auto??

Pros: Connectivity thru bluetooth enables SongPal to take over the control. Very convenient. Receiver starts music as soon as car key is on, don't wait audio system starting up.

Cons: Receiver's native control sometimes confuses me. I hope Bluetooth connectivity will continue stable in the future.

Great Value

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

This head unit is great value for the the money overall. The Bluetooth audio and phone paring are quick. Making a hands free phone call is a little tricky whiteout this being a touch screen, however still possible. The head unit does not have the capability to automatically dim when the vehicle headlights are turned on, this would be the only feature that it I would like it to have. The head unit can be manually dimmed or put on an automatic dim timer. I installed this in a 2002 VW New Beetle and this head unit has brought the technology of this car into the current era.

Pros: Bluetooth Audio & Hand Free Calling RDS Preset & Custom EQ

Cons: Dimmer does not connect to vehicle lights

I can't believe a radio at this price has the same features as the one in my Lexus IS convertible. I put this radio in my Daughter's Prius as a birthday gift. I plan the get another one and put it back my other Daughter's RAV4 for her birthday next month.

Pros: Installation was easier than I expected. Trim kit fit perfectly.

Unbelievably easy upgrade over factory unit

2001 Ford F-250 Super Duty

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I recently purchased a 2001 F-250 and immediately wanted/needed an upgrade that provided a hands free option. Always a fan of Sony products and this reciever had all the features I was looking for from bluetooth to USB. There were no issues connecting my phone but it did take a few tries to get other things set up to my liking. I didn't call tech support, just read the manual ( go figure, right). I was on the fence about my purchase and how it would fit my truck. Crutchfield's online chat was super helpful. The representative put a togther a sample cart for me and explained what each item did. I bought the recommended removal tools, install kit, the "readyharness" service and a scratch and dent unit. The installation looks great, took less than hour and literally couldn't be more plug and play with great sound quality through factory speakers. Don't hesitate to get this reciever if you're looking for a solid upgrade over an old radio.

Pros: Typical Sony quality Built in mic for calls Easily connects to iPhone initially and every time since ReadyHarness couldn't make things easier

Cons: Buttons are on the small side but not a deal breaker Some of the features ( flashing in sync with music and caution alram beeping) take a few attempts to turn off

I've only had this a couple days and it seems fine. I like simple and it seems like I can simplify this to be easy for me to use. I can turn off alot of the beeps and pulsing lights, etc. Still seems more complicated than necessary but I'll figure it out.

Pros: Seems to work really well

Cons: Makes a noise when I turn the car off and I can't stop it. I never want to make a call while driving and I can't seem to disable that. Clunky bluetooth pairing - not that easy

The new Sony radio and CD player, which is a replacement for the Sony radio I purchased from Crutchfield 12 years ago, includes Bluetooth enabled hands-free calling. I wanted the additional features to comply with the recently enacted Georgia law prohibiting use of smartphones while driving. Installation was a breeze as the new radio fit into the old Sony mount and wiring harness provided by Crutchfield years ago.

Bought this to replace a Pioneer head unit that the owner of my car had put in before me that had stopped working. I am blown away by how much better it sounds. I do have aftermarket speakers but the Pioneer head unity that it originally had is incomparable to this Sony. This radio/cd player is a good value and was very easy to install in my 1988 Toyota extended cab 4x4 pickup truck. Nice features otherwise. Happy with purchase!

I've had it for a couple weeks and haven't had any issues except the Bluetooth was acting up but it may have been my phone. What's good is I can just use the usb or aux anyway. I love the custom EQ settings and the subwoofer crossover is good for cleaning my speaker quality.

I purchased this unit for the hands-free/bluetooth features, as well as the fact that it has a volume knob! Everything works as expected, except at first it was a bit difficult to get the unit to play music off my phone, without cutting off/on every 3 seconds. I also wish it had several choices for the color display, other then blue, to match the dash. Other then that, it's a great unit for the price. Considering buying another for one of my other vehicles.

Pros: Hands-free/Bluetooth/CD Receiver/USB Port/Aux Port

Cons: Only has a Blue color display.

Generally good with one major firmware bug

Crutchfield customer from Tempe, AZ on 12/18/2017

2007 Volkswagen Passat

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

This sony receivers packs most essential functions into a reasonable price tag. The sound is much nicer than the stock audio. The remote is very useful because the button on the receiver is very small and the "next" button is actually on the passenger side and hard to reach. But you can change song or stations on the remote. But I would like to point out an important bug on the current firmware. This device is designed to connect to two phones at the same time by bluetooth. However, if you have two phones paired, but only one phone within reach of the bluetooth signal of this device, it will keep searching for the phone that is out of reach for the first minute or two when it powers on. This interferes with the connection to the first phone and causes significant interruption to the bluetooth audio playback. You basically cannot listen to music via bluetooth for the first one or two minutes if you have two phone paired but only one phone within reach. I tested this bug on two of these receivers and it reproduced quite well. So I believe this is a firmware issue and Sony needs to fix this. The service of Crutchfield is great! I had this problem with the first unit and they send me a replacement quickly. However, the replacement did not solve the problem. Of course this is not Crutchfield's fault because this is a firmware problem from Sony. If you own this receiver and also have this problem, please contact Sony so that we can get the firmware update sooner.

Pros: Clear sound, bluetooth, easy to install

Cons: firmware issue affects the bluetooth experience

Built-in Bluetooth

Bluetooth Technology: The Sony MEX-N4200BT is equipped with built-in Bluetooth (version 3.0), allowing you to make and receive phone calls wirelessly through the receiver; as well as stream music wirelessly from your smartphone to the head unit. In order to use Bluetooth wireless technology, your phone must also be Bluetooth compatible and be able to interpret certain profiles. This unit is compatible with the following Bluetooth Profiles:

  • Hands-Free Communication: HFP 1.6 (Hands Free Profile), PBAB 1.0 (Phone Book Access Profile).
  • Audio Streaming: A2DP 1.3 (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile), AVRCP 1.3 (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile).
Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Sony MEX-N4200BT.

Multi-Device Pairing w/ Dual-Phone Connection: Up to nine Bluetooth-compatible devices can be paired to this receiver. You are even able to keep two Bluetooth-enabled phones connected at the same time, so you can make and receive calls from either phone through the head unit. Only one audio device can be connected at a time, which means only one of the two connected phones can stream audio. Once an already paired device is in close proximity to the Sony receiver, the two units will automatically re-connect. The head unit offers three pairing modes - SSP, NFC, & USB Auto

  • Simple Secure Pairing: With Simple Secure Pairing (SSP), you can easily pair a Bluetooth enabled phone to the Sony MEX-N4200BT without having to enter pin codes or go through complicated settings.
  • Near Field Communication (for Android): Android (OS 4.0+) smartphones that have Near Field Communication (NFC) pair simply by touching the Android device's NFC tag to the head unit's NFC tag on its rotary-knob. For older Android smartphones that don't have OS 4.0 or better installed, download the NFC Easy Connect app from Google Play to use the head unit's NFC pairing function.
  • USB Auto (for iPhone): You can pair your Apple iPhone (iOS 5.0+) by simply connecting it to the Sony head unit via USB and activating the Bluetooth function on your Apple device.

Hands-Free Communication w/ Integrated Mic: The Sony MEX-N4200BT supports Bluetooth hands-free communication for your Bluetooth enabled cell-phone (such as your iPhone or Android smartphone). Bluetooth hands-free communication helps to minimize distraction while driving by allowing you to control your mobile phone from the head unit, so you don't have to touch your mobile phone. The unit is equipped with an integrated microphone (featuring adjustable gain) on the front-panel, so you can carry on your side of the conversation while listening to the caller through your vehicles speakers. And thanks to the latest Hands-Free Profile (HFP 1.6) with wideband speech capability, the MEX-N4200BT provides more natural sound quality and details during wireless calls.

  • Answering Calls: Incoming calls can be answered manually or automatically (between 3-10 seconds) through the Sony head unit, while the ring tone is output from your car speakers and the caller's name or phone number is displayed on the head unit's LCD. Incoming calls can also be rejected if desired.
  • Dialing a Number: Using the MEX-N4200BT, you can dial a phone number in one of the following ways.
    • Entering Phone #: Allows you to manually dial a phone number using the unit's control dial.
    • Preset Dial: You can store up to 6 contacts in the preset dial for quick dialing.
    • Phone Book: You can store up to 1,000 contacts in the unit's phone book. Up to a 40 character name can be input for each contact.
    • Call History: The unit will store the last 20 calls, allowing you to select a previous phone number quickly from the list.
    • Voice Dial: You can make a call using the voice tags stored on your connected cellular phone.
    • Redial: Use to easily redial the last number you called.
Notes:
  • During a conversation, you can switch between the Private Mode (talking directly on your cell phone) and the Hands Free Mode.
  • The unit features a rear-panel 3.5mm microphone jack for adding an external microphone (sold separately).

Wireless Audio Streaming: The Sony MEX-N4200BT supports wireless audio playback (AD2P) and control (AVRCP) of a Bluetooth-enabled smartphone or audio player, plus song/artist information display. You are able to stream your stored music library on your Bluetooth-enabled smartphone, as well as music apps downloaded on your smartphone to the Sony MEX-N4200BT for playback.

  • SBC + AAC Codecs: In addition to support for the standard SBC Bluetooth audio codec, the MEX-N4200BT offers support of AAC.  By supporting AAC, the MEX-N4200BT offers better audio performance of the music streamed from your Apple iPod, iPhone, or iPad.
  • Music Control: The Sony MEX-N4200BT lets you control basic playback functions like Play/Pause and Previous/Next Track from its front-panel. Advanced music browsing is not supported.
  • Song/Artist Information: The head unit will also display your stored music and music app's song information; such as Artist name and Song/Album title (not compatible with all apps).
Note: When an incoming call or outgoing call is in progress from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, audio streaming will be paused so you can take your call. Once the call is finished, your streaming music will resume.

Siri Eyes Free Control (for iPhone): When paired and connected to an iPhone with Siri via Bluetooth, the Sony MEX-N4200BT has the ability to access Siri through its front-panel controls and external microphone. Simply activate the "voice dial" function on the MEX-N4200BT to engage Siri and use the built-in microphone to communicate with Siri. Siri's voice will heard through your vehicle's speakers. All Siri functions including hands-free calling, music search, setting reminders, text-messaging, audible navigation, and more can be done through the head unit and its microphone. You can even ask Siri to get directions to a destination and the turn-by-turn instructions will heard through your vehicle's speakers, while the on-screen map still displays on your iPhone with Siri. The head unit's audio is attenuated while Siri provides audible directions.

Note: The head unit will only display hands-free calling and Bluetooth audio information (all other functions of Siri are only audible through the MEX-N4200BT; visual data will still need to be viewed from your iPhone).

Android & iPhone Integration

Android Direct Connect via USB: The Sony MEX-N4200BT enables playback of stored music and music apps on select Android smartphones through its front-panel USB port. The unit's USB port (1.5A) will also charge your Android device while connected; the vehicle's accessory key must be set to the  'ACC' or 'On' position. There are two types of modes to choose from based on your type of Android smartphone and what content you want to listen to.

  • AOA 2.0 (Stored Music & Music Apps): The Sony MEX-N4200BT supports Android Open Accessory 2.0 (AOA 2.0), which lets  you connect your Android smartphone (OS 4.1-7.1.2) to the MEX-N4200BT's front-panel USB port and listen to stored music and select music apps from your Android device through the Sony receiver. You'll be able to control basic playback functions such as Play/Pause and Previous/Next Track. Other advanced music navigation will still be done from your Android smartphone's touchscreen. In this mode, the head unit will not display song/artist information; you'll continue to view song/artist information from the Android device's touchscreen. You'll still be able to access other functions and applications from your Android smartphone's touchscreen, while listening to music through the head unit. If you make a call or answer a call from your smartphone while listening to music in this mode, the music will pause until you are finished with the call and then start back up again.
  • MTP (Stored Music w/ Song/Artist Info): The MEX-N4200BT also supports MTP for playback & control of stored MP3/WMA music files on your Android (OS 4.0+) device through the Sony receiver's front-panel USB port. In this mode, you get basic playback control (like Play/Pause & Previous/Next Track), plus song/artist information on the receiver's LCD screen. The one thing that seems to set Sony car stereos apart is the front USB input. This means you can create your own playlist from Youtube downloads or convert from your own cds. Play time is unlimited, based on the size of the USB, not based on the # of slots in your cd player, or limited by an aux player & cord. I've used Sony car players for many years now and the sound quality is excellent with just the basic unit and for all types of music. Sony + Crutchfield just makes things EZ & wonderful! Q
If I pair this device via Bluetooth to my smart phone, will I be able to use controls on the head unit to control playback of music on the phone, i.e., Pause, FF, Next Track, etc.? I have a Sony-G1200U and when I connect the smartphone to that via USB, I am able to control the smartphone's music via the controls on the head unit- just like if I'm playing a CD. I bought a 3rd party Bluetooth device that pairs my smart phone to the head unit, but all it will do is stream music to the unit- the playback has to be controlled by the phone itself.

Q
I see that the Sony Mex-B4200BT has an intergraded microphone in the front panel. How does the internal microphone compare to external microphone option as far as sound quality? Do you get a better microphone quality if you opt for radio with an external microphone, such as the Sony's Mex-B5200BT model? I ask because I'm looking for a good sound quality microphone when I place a phone call.
[ Bernave  Jan 20, 2018 ]
2 answers
A
Generally speaking, external wired microphones tend to offer improved audio quality versus integrated (or built-in) microphones, so you can be heard easier over surrounding traffic and road noise. For more details or to discuss further, please contact an Advisor directly by phone (888.955.6000) or online chat. Thanks!
[ Larry  Jan 24, 2018 ]  Staff
A
The built-in mic seems to be pretty good, but I sometimes have to speak up for the other party to hear me over the road noise. I have never had an external mic, so I really don't know if it would be that much better. Overall, I am well pleased with the 4200.
[ Bryan  Jan 24, 2018 ]
Q
does it come with a mic?
[ abel  Nov 20, 2017 ]

A
Yes. The microphone is integrated in the front panel of the stereo. You will find this information, and more, by clicking the "Details" tab on the stereo's main webpage and scrolling down below the "Features & Specs" table. I hope that helps. My Bio: https://www.crutchfield.com/bio/Ryan
