Stellar audio

Sony's impressive Advanced Sound Engine features a 10-band EQ and frequency filters to make your speaker setup shine. Sony's powerful Digital Reality amp is noted for its solid sound output and realistic audio reproduction. If you're looking to expand your system with external amps, you'll find three sets of preamp outputs.

Looks that catch the eye

Sharp styling is on display with this Sony. Carbon fiber accents frame the controls, and you can adjust the Dynamic Color Illluminator to set up thousands of color combinations across two separate illumination zones. And when you're getting your groove on, the Sound Synchronization feature pulses the lights to match your music. Details like a nifty sliding USB port cover round out the package.

Want to keep your steering wheel controls?

In most cars, you'll need an adapter to retain those controls with this car stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and radio, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. You'll see the adapters that work with your vehicle when you add this receiver to your cart.

Big improvement in sound quality. Was a challenge to slide in due to limited depth of dash and lots of wiring passin through. Helped to pull the CCU next door out to help move wires. Would reccomend others to buy.

Installed in 1997 Jeep Wrangler to replace an older sony unit that has given me great service. I wanted a bluetooth unit for hands free phone operation. This new unit has more that satisfied my needs. I installed with new sound bar speakers and a powered subwoofer, sounds great and is very convenient to operate. Could not be happier, Love It!

Pretty easy to install, but says to use screws from your previous hardware. Ignore the last bit of instructions and keep to the crutchfield instructions. There will be a set of screws when you order. Use those.

    Pros: Good sub output

Cons: Instructions in the radio packaging can be confusing since you cannot reuse the screws from certain manufacturers.

I replaced my 23 year old Miat radio with this. I also paid for the adaptor harness. Worked great. The install was very easy, and although I could have done the install without the harness (just using the standard install kit) it was well worth the $25 just for the time saved. I could have done it in minutes, but I always get distracted when I start taking stuff apart. I wanted it mainly for BT streaming. That was a snap to set up with my iPhone X. Thanks Crutchfield. Ive used your products many times over the decades. Everything always works, and you guys know what every car needs to get the install done right.

I have probably bought at least a half dozen of these Sony stereos for my vehicles & my son's. They are excellent quality, easy to install & wire, have the features we want & function as expected. I've tried other brands but always end up regretting it. These are the best bang for the buck at around $100.

Pros: Easy to use, easy to install, function as expected

Good basic little radio. All the options of a more expensive head unit at an affordable price for a project car of mine. I didn't want the color changing feature but I honestly haven't turned it off yet.. they call it rainbow, and it's actually pretty cool. Sound quality is decent. Happy with purchase.

feature rich, and the microphone is a nice touch. I also like that I can customize two colors on the radio face. Enough colors to make it match my favorite team.

Great deck! I love the front USB input the most. Anytime I go anywhere I just grab my iPod, plug it in and go. It's so easy, especially when you have playlists set up on your iPod like I do, and kept on shuffle, then all you gotta do is plug it in and it starts playing the playlist automatically. This deck has a little bit more power than some others, so it powers the new door speakers I got at the same time, beautifully. My only con with this unit is there is no AAC file support on a flash drive using the USB input. I would've given it 5 stars if it would support AAC files on a flash drive.

Pros: Great Sony Sound Front USB Lots of Colors to Choose From Plenty of Power for Aftermarket Speakers

Cons: It Only Supports AAC When Playing Devices Through USB

Hi, This unit the staffer and I determined could produce my needed result is exactly-what-I-did-need. It performs flawlessly and can be easily expanded if the need arises. It operates very well and does everything so far that I need it to. The Sales and Tech staff are totally up to the task in helping me thru the install. Installed present day tech into a 40 year old vehicle. Once everything was connected and in place I turned the key, pressed go and it was like 'almost' like landing on the moon... I couldn't be more pleased. V/r, ......nick Lombardi, Navarre,Fla.

Pros: Unit performs flawlessly Crutchfield's staff through out the process was timely, knowledgeable and friendly.

Cons: Not sure of any Cons at the moment. Some of the features require monthly subscription but that is the same for any vehicle or service. And I didn't really require those options so its not a Con.

Bluetooth function reliablility is nonexistent. Got it as a gift and installed it a few months later in my new truck, it was after the warranty. The bluetooth worked great for about a month or so, then it would act as if the signal to the radio from the phone was overloading it. The music would play and it would chop in and out. Like it could only process the incoming bt signal in waves. Super bummed. I tried it often and would very rarely be rewarded with normal acting bt playback only to have it return to the overloaded wave pattern when restarting the vehicle. Not something that has ever happened with any of my Sony products; I have lots of Sony products. This head unit has me rethinking purchasing any more Sony products in the future

Pros: Looks nice and build quality feels like a Sony product.

    Cons: Unreliable Bluetooth connection

I finally replaced my 14 year old in dash CD changer in my van with this unit. I wanted Bluetooth to stream music, make and answer calls, etc. I can't comment on power because I'm still using the factory amp, but all the connections are there. Connects 2 phones simultaneously. Custom EQ settings, high pass filter, separate color controls for the display and buttons, etc. Only annoyances are that some setup menus are available only during specific sources, or during no source is on at all. For example, you can't set the mic sensitivity unless your making a call. You can set 2 different brightness levels for day and night (awesome) but you must have the headlights on before setting the nighttime level and headlights off for setting daytime level. This wasn't my first installation. Crutchfield instructions are just OK. I had a problem with turning on my antenna amp, but a few back-and-forth with a crutchfield tech straightened things out. Had to splice a wire that wasn't specified in the instructions.

Pros: All the features you could reasonably want for a non-touchscreen head unit at a reasonable price.

Cons: Defaults to demo "on" whenever power is reset. (A minor annoyance since you have to setup everything again anyway.) Also some setup options are available only when listening to a particular source.

I see no way to revise my previous review, so I'll write a retraction. there IS a privacy mode button as I previously misstated that there wasn't. it's the "return" button while the phone is being used. I still do not like that the radio mutes when passenger is on phone though and atuoconnect is still spotty. since the source remains at the selected when you shut the radio off I would suggest to make sure to NOT leave it on Pandora or BT Audio.

Pros: WHEN Bluetooth autoconnect works it is easy to use and even launches Pandora app, you do not have to launch it from phone.

Cons: the functions above the preset buttons are not lighted.

user interface is intuitive and simple to navigate, but i can't give 5 stars because Bluetooth connectivity is inconsistent. sometimes it connects and sometimes it doesn't. when it does it takes a long time and multiple tries. when it doesn't then I can't even connect manually. no "privacy" mode. must select on phone. if passenger is connected then THEIR phone call silences the radio. also no mute button. must either turn volume button or hold the power/source button for couple seconds.

Pros: good user interface, colors choices are good, good visibility in sunlight

Cons: Bluetooth connectivity inconsistent. preset buttons small and require too much force to depress. instruction manual is difficult to understand

I'm happy with the unit. I has what I need. Bluetooth connectivity for hands free calling (nice and clear for both me and the caller) and for listening to music from my smartphone. The only time consuming step was setting up the microphone. I have the tools for clean splices. There are other features in the unit that I don't use but seem useful such making calls using the unit and not the phone.

    Pros: Bluetooth connectivity is excellent

Cons: None to mention based on my needs.

This is probably the 6th or 8th receiver I've gotten from Crutchfield. Every time has been a breeze thanks to the instructions and harness. I bought this Sony as a surprise for my wife. Her stock stereo died and I thought I'd earn some brownie points with a feature-rich receiver. I installed it in less than 30 minutes. We went through the features, paired her phone with the Bluetooth, and made test calls. Calls were clear on both ends. She can now play her audiobooks through her speakers as well. It picks up a ton of stations. The equalizer tunes in the speakers in her Gran Prix very nicely. She even got to set her own color!

Pros: Features Ease of installation Clear Bluetooth calls Music sounds pretty good too! Wife comments: "Awesome... Love it... Amazing"

I've replaced my factory Infinity DVD stereo receiver, front dash and front door speakers with a Sony MEX-N5200BT CD receiver, a pair of front dash speakers (Focal Universal ISC 130 2 way 120 W) & front door speakers (Kicker 43DSC504 2 way 200 W). The sound is like day and night. The sound and power from the Sony MEX-N5200BT driving the full half of my van is outstanding. Have I mention that the replacement speakers for the rear side have not been completed yet. When those pair of speakers (Kicker 44KSC69304 3 way 300 W) are installed, my van sound system will be complete. Also this Sony has Bluetooth, 10 band equalizer, extra mega bass, etc.. This is a great buy.

Pros: Clean sound, power, Bluetooth, multi-color displays (35k colors), Pandora, SiriusXM, iPOD USB, etc

Cons: Remote control is easier to use than the CD receiver face knob/controls combination

I bought this to replace the MEX-N5100 I had that only lasted eight months. The radio sounds great and the bluetooth works just fine. I am concerned that this one may not last. All in all very nice radio.

The radio is an electrical marvel but an ergonomic disaster. The controls cannot be read from the drivers seat, you need to memorize them. Without the instructions it would be a challenge to just turn the thing on. Whoever wrote the instructions had a challenge with the radios convoluted operation. It is not a radio for person who does not like puzzles. It should have been tested on the designers grandmother. I expected better from Sony. The installation instructions and customer service from Crutchfield was pretty good but I entrusted the installation to a friend who is better in electronics than I am.

    Pros: It's a fine radio

Cons: Figuring on how to operate it is a problem

Only criticism I have is that it only supports 2 Bluetooth devices and it's difficult to remove Bluetooth devices. I had hoped to link 2 phones and our TV, computer, etc. I didn't add Sirius so I can't talk about that.

We purchased two of these, so that my wife and I would have the same unit in each car -- mine's in a 2010 Hyundai Elantra Touring, and hers is in a 2003 Toyota Matrix. Setup was fairly simple, though my Google Pixel 2 doesn't like being paired to two devices with the same name (even though they have different device IDs) when trying to use the NFC automatic pairing. My wife's iPhone 7 had to be manually paired, even though it usually supports NFC. That said, manual pairing was easy and quick. Sound quality is quite good, even with factory speakers, and there's plenty of volume. The preset EQ curves all sound very musical, and custom tuning is easy, too. The menu system makes getting around easily. Speaking of using phones with these units, use is pretty easy and sound quality is excellent -- much better than another makers head unit I have in my van. Overall, I'm quite happy with the units. I'm even considering replacing the one in my van with once of these.

Love this receiver! With the dual color changing options, I will never get bored with it. The Bluetooth, and being Pandora compatible makes this receiver an excellent purchase. Replaced my 2001 focus factory cassette radio with the Sony 5200 BT. And the install went flawlessly thanks to Crutchfield. Looks great in my dash. W Of course I changed out the 4 speakers too with 2 sets of Rockford Fosgates. I am very happy with the sound from the Sony, especially when I am streaming Pandora. I can turn it up and still get crystal highs and pronounced lows. I do not have any regrets with this purchase. Love It!

EXCELLENT Radio. This is the third one I've bought, now don't think there was anything wrong, just the opposite. I have three Grandsons and I have bought each one of them this radio. One is a tech geek and he loves that he can play all his tunes from his phone using Bluetooth. The hands free calling on this radio is great, it doesn't sound like you're in a bucket and even though one of the vehicles is a convertible the sound is pretty good with little wind noise. Of course you have to make sure you place the mic out of the way of the wind. If you're looking for a GREAT radio for your vehicle, this is it! Playing SiriusXM from your phone through the radio is awesome, the radio displays the song and artist. I as well as the Grandsons are impressed by it.

    Pros: Bluetooth, hands free phone,

A good price/value for this radio. I bought this radio because I wanted BlueTooth capability (and a removable face) in my 2004 Jeep Rubicon . I am very happy with the result. I don't use the SongPal app so don't know about this, but the radio sounds great (better than my stock radio did), and looks better too. External mic works well and comes with a very long wire for easy routing. Another review mentioned inability to change color hues on menus, but I didn't have any trouble - completely customizable color scheme if you read the instructions. Installation was a breeze due to the great, detailed (including pictures) install instructions from Crutchfield. I paid a few extra bucks to get the Crutchfield Ready Harness - DO IT! It's worth it to have a hassle free experience. And it looks great in the dash.

Pros: Easy install (with Crutchfield Ready Harness) - great sound after a little custom tuning - better reception than stock radio - Bass booster - single DIN - external mic with looooooong wire.

Cons: Screen washout is bad when top is down on my jeep - small interface/buttons/controls (can be difficult to see, but easy to memorize) - BlueTooth is slow to connect on startup

I am very pleased with the sound quality, radio sensitivity and general design of this unit. It does so much that with a limited face plate foot print, it is difficult to learn all the control features in an effective manner, so I am sure I am not using it up to its potential. The sound quality and sensitivity of the external microphone is very good, making calls very nice. It has integrated nicely with my Moto X phone via Bluetooth and allows the phone's voice features (including reading texts and dictating responses hands free) to work well. The CD player seemed to skip too easily at first but has evened out. Overall, I am very happy with my purchase. Installed in a 2011 Honda CRV LX with a Crutchfield supplied mounting kit.

Pros: Single DIN size, extensive capabilities

Cons: I wish it had an internal microphone. Controls are so multi functional that the learning curve is steep.

Let me first start by saying that I come from also owning the Sony MEX-N5100 series. While 95% of the kinks have been worked out of the 5100 unit Sony decides to do minor refresh (5200 series) but include most of the same issues that the prior model had at launch, let me digress. For instance some menus can't be changed from WHITE to the color you have the deck set up to (btw it can do a lot of color hues) a feature that took several months to come to the 5100. Second the SongPal app which is OK at best still nags you to connect / open the app on your smart phone every time you turn on his head unit (even though you don't want/need to). Those grievances aside it's basically a lot like the 5100 but w/ a dot-matrix display versus your cheap run-of-the-mill calculator block style display. Id normally give five stars but since Sony can't seem to learn it's lesson from the original unit they don't deserve a five star for their half polished product. Upgrade the firmware and improve your customer service centers and you'll be back on your a game (which Samsung rightfully has IMO these days). Otherwise the deck sounds great to me (after a little personal preference tuning-which is all I use the decks "optional" jank SongPal app for). I am happy with the unit. It's in my 98 BMW 328i Vert and it's clean symmetrical look is why I bought it. *Side note-the 5200's screen is more easily washed out then the 5100's so take that into consideration if buying for a convertible.

Pros: Clean look and great sound

Cons: SongPal App Sony "optionally" pushes you to use.

    Built-in Bluetooth

Bluetooth Technology: The Sony MEX-N5200BT is equipped with built-in Bluetooth (version 3.0), allowing you to make and receive phone calls wirelessly through the receiver; as well as stream music wirelessly from your smartphone to the head unit. In order to use Bluetooth wireless technology, your phone must also be Bluetooth compatible and be able to interpret certain profiles. This unit is compatible with the following Bluetooth Profiles:

    • Hands-Free Communication: HFP 1.6 (Hands Free Profile), PBAB 1.0 (Phone Book Access Profile).
    • Audio Streaming: A2DP 1.3 (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile), AVRCP 1.3 (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile).
Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Sony MEX-N5200BT.

Multi-Device Pairing w/ Dual-Phone Connection: Up to nine Bluetooth-compatible devices can be paired to this receiver. You are even able to keep two Bluetooth-enabled phones connected at the same time, so you can make and receive calls from either phone through the head unit. Only one audio device can be connected at a time, which means only one of the two connected phones can stream audio. Once an already paired device is in close proximity to the Sony receiver, the two units will automatically re-connect. The head unit offers three pairing modes - SSP, NFC, & USB Auto

    • Simple Secure Pairing: With Simple Secure Pairing (SSP), you can easily pair a Bluetooth enabled phone to the Sony MEX-N5200BT without having to enter pin codes or go through complicated settings.
    • Near Field Communication (for Android): Android (OS 4.0+) smartphones that have Near Field Communication (NFC) pair simply by touching the Android device's NFC tag to the head unit's NFC tag on its rotary-knob. For older Android smartphones that don't have OS 4.0 or better installed, download the NFC Easy Connect app from Google Play to use the head unit's NFC pairing function.
    • USB Auto (for iPhone): You can pair your Apple iPhone (iOS 5.0+) by simply connecting it to the Sony head unit via USB and activating the Bluetooth function on your Apple device.

Hands-Free Communication w/ External Mic: The Sony MEX-N5200BT supports Bluetooth hands-free communication for your Bluetooth enabled cell-phone (such as your iPhone or Android smartphone). Bluetooth hands-free communication helps to minimize distraction while driving by allowing you to control your mobile phone from the head unit, so you don't have to touch your mobile phone. The unit features an external microphone (featuring adjustable gain), so you can carry on your side of the conversation while listening to the caller through your vehicles speakers. And thanks to the latest Hands-Free Profile (HFP 1.6) with wideband speech capability, the MEX-N5200BT provides more natural sound quality and details during wireless calls.

    • Answering Calls: Incoming calls can be answered manually or automatically (between 3-10 seconds) through the Sony head unit, while the ring tone is output from your car speakers and the caller's name or phone number is displayed on the head unit's LCD. Incoming calls can also be rejected if desired.
    • Dialing a Number: Using the MEX-N5200BT, you can dial a phone number in one of the following ways.
      • Entering Phone #: Allows you to manually dial a phone number using the unit's control dial.
      • Preset Dial: You can store up to 6 contacts in the preset dial for quick dialing.
      • Phone Book: You can store up to 1,000 contacts in the unit's phone book. Up to a 40 character name can be input for each contact.
      • Call History: The unit will store the last 20 calls, allowing you to select a previous phone number quickly from the list.
      • Voice Dial: You can make a call using the voice tags stored on your connected cellular phone.
      • Redial: Use to easily redial the last number you called.
Note: During a conversation, you can switch between the Private Mode (talking directly on your cell phone) and the Hands Free Mode.

Wireless Audio Streaming: The Sony MEX-N5200BT supports wireless audio playback (AD2P) and control (AVRCP) of a Bluetooth-enabled smartphone or audio player, plus song/artist information display. You are able to stream your stored music library on your Bluetooth-enabled smartphone, as well as music apps downloaded on your smartphone to the Sony MEX-N5200BT for playback.

    • SBC + AAC Codecs: In addition to support for the standard SBC Bluetooth audio codec, the MEX-N5200BT offers support of AAC.  By supporting AAC, the MEX-N5200BT offers better audio performance of the music streamed from your Apple iPod, iPhone, or iPad.
    • Music Control: The Sony MEX-N5200BT lets you control basic playback functions like Play/Pause and Previous/Next Track from its front-panel. Advanced music browsing is not supported.
    • Song/Artist Information: The head unit will also display your stored music and music app's song information; such as Artist name and Song/Album title (not compatible with all apps).
Note: When an incoming call or outgoing call is in progress from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, audio streaming will be paused so you can take your call. Once the call is finished, your streaming music will resume.

Siri Eyes Free Control (for iPhone): When paired and connected to an iPhone with Siri via Bluetooth, the Sony MEX-N5200BT has the ability to access Siri through its front-panel controls and external microphone. Simply activate the "voice dial" function on the MEX-N5200BT to engage Siri and use the included microphone to communicate with Siri. Siri's voice will heard through your vehicle's speakers. All Siri functions including hands-free calling, music search, setting reminders, text-messaging, audible navigation, and more can be done through the head unit and its microphone. You can even ask Siri to get directions to a destination and the turn-by-turn instructions will heard through your vehicle's speakers, while the on-screen map still displays on your iPhone with Siri. The head unit's audio is attenuated while Siri provides audible directions.

Note: The head unit will only display hands-free calling and Bluetooth audio information (all other functions of Siri are only audible through the MEX-N5200BT; visual data will still need to be viewed from your iPhone).

    Android & iPhone Integration

Android Direct Connect via USB: The Sony MEX-N5200BT enables playback of stored music and music apps on select Android smartphones through its front-panel USB port. The unit's USB port (1.5A) will also charge your Android device while connected; the vehicle's accessory key must be set to the  'ACC' or 'On' position. There are two types of modes to choose from based on your type of Android smartphone and what content you want to listen to.

    • AOA 2.0 (Stored Music & Music Apps): The Sony MEX-N5200BT supports Android Open Accessory 2.0 (AOA 2.0), which lets  you connect your Android smartphone (OS 4.1-7.1.2) to the MEX-N5200BT's front-panel USB port and listen to stored music and select music apps from your Android device through the Sony receiver. You'll be able to control basic playback functions such as Play/Pause and Previous/Next Track. Other advanced music navigation will still be done from your Android smartphone's touchscreen. In this mode, the head unit will not display song/artist information; you'll continue to view song/artist information from the Android device's touchscreen. You'll still be able to access other functions and applications from your Android smartphone's touchscreen, while listening to music through the head unit. If you make a call or answer a call from your smartphone while listening to music in this mode, the music will pause until you are finished with the call and then start back up again.
    • MTP (Stored Music w/ Song/Artist Info): The MEX-N5200BT also supports MTP for playback & control of stored MP3/WMA music files on your Android (OS 4.0+) device through the Sony receiver's front-panel USB port. I've been very satisfied with my past Sony stereo receivers so I decided to try this as a replacement to my stock 2004 Toyota Sienna unit. I chose this over the MEX-GS810BH for design of the faceplate. The added features were not important to me. [ Kyle  Mar 19, 2018 ]

    A
Because I just fried my MEX-5100BT and this is the same in all/most aspects. 20 RMS/55Watt Peak.....no other Mfg. can compare w/watts or price !! It was my mistake in the frying part, kind of, my $300 Optima battery shorted out and fried my voltage regulator which in turn did my Sony in. Take it from me, use a really good fuse system when you direct wire(I hate having to use key in ignition ) to play my music. I loved my Sony, so why switch ???? Zakk Wylde Rocks !! A
I had to buy this stereo because my previous stereo Jensen VX3014 was not able to produce high frequency sounds without scratching noises and it took me over a year to figure out what was wrong. I did not think a $200 stereo would have this issue so I did not find the problem until a year later, after the warranty was over. Do not buy a Jensen stereo. Always go for Sony or Pioneer. For the price the Sony MEX-N5200BT has all the functions and specs necessary to run four 6x8's in my 2005 Ford Freestyle. I've always been a fan of Sony sound and functions. To upgrade from the MEX-N4100BT that does not have a front and rear RCA out with the RCA sub out. This one will give me a front and rear RCA channel along with the SUB RCA out. This will allow me to add an amp without having to split rear speakers on sub channel. [ MICHAEL ALLEN  Oct 11, 2017 ]

Nice feature set on this unit, but I've been having issues updating the firmware (11-43 to 12-43) to fix a bluetooth and sound bug. Anyone else experiencing this? Display freezes and gives error message (requiring a power removal hard restart since this unit doesn't have a hard reset button).

It depends on the type of car you have... Most stereos will do it, all you have to do is connect the remote cable to the cable that corresponds to the antena.

Choose your colors Browse 35,000 colors to match the two-zone illumination with your car interior. And when the music starts, lights on the LED screen pulse in time to the song. Enter an answer to this question.

It does indeed pulse to your music. The app they provide you let's you control all lighting settings including fading, pulsing and synchronization of music.

Yes but we found it distracting when driving. Fortunately you can turn off the pulse/color changing feature. For safety especially after dark, I would keep it on red because it's the darkest color.

This will depend largely on your vehicle. For details on installation please contact an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They will be able to pull up your vehicle and give you the details on what you will need for an installation.
