Take it up a notch

Sony made waves in the camera enthusiast community with its acclaimed RX100 high-performance compact digital camera. Now, Sony has updated this popular SLR alternative with some cool new features. The RX100 II features an improved sensor, built-in Wi-Fi, a tilting display, and a manual control ring — improvements that make a great camera even easier to use.

Big sensor, now better than ever

The RX100 II's improved 1-inch back-illuminated CMOS sensor offers even better low-light sensitivity with minimal noise. This large sensor is more than twice the size of those found in standard point-and-shoot cameras. As a result, this camera rivals larger SLRs when it comes to picture quality. Expect clear images and vibrant colors from your photos, even when shooting in dimly lit conditions. Rarely does such exceptional photo quality come from a camera small enough to fit in a shirt pocket.

Manual 5-step zoom control

It's not just the large sensor that enables the RX100 II to capture gorgeous shots in low light. The Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* lens has a fast f/1.8 aperture value at full wide angle. That superior light-gathering ability really comes in handy if you're shooting in this camera's lightning-quick continuous mode — it can record up to 10 frames per second at full 20.2-megapixel resolution. The 3.6X optical zoom range offers shooting versatility for more distant subjects. And the new assignable manual control ring features 5-step zoom, so you can dial in those subjects more quickly.

Sony DSC-RX100M2 RX100 II compact digital camera

The RX100 II features a tilting LCD screen for improved shooting versatility from high or low angles.

Built-in Wi-Fi

With a camera this good, you're going to want to share lots of your photos. To make it easier, Sony added wireless photo-sharing capability to the RX100 II. With built-in Wi-Fi, it's easy to transfer photos from the camera wirelessly to your compatible smartphone using Sony's free PlayMemories app for Apple® and Android™ devices. The app also offers remote control of the camera's shutter, so you can snap a shot using your smartphone — great for shooting group shots using a tripod. If you have an NFC-compatible Android smartphone, simply touch it to the RX100 II for instant pairing and transfer of photos.

Shoot from up high or down low

Other features new to the RX100 II include a tilting LCD screen, allowing you to shoot from the hip or above your head while viewing the high-resolution display. Choose from 24, 30, or 60 frames per second when shooting 1080p HD video. Want better audio quality from your home movies? Attach an optional microphone to the multi-interface shoe, which can also accommodate compatible viewfinders or flashes. There's also a multi-terminal for connecting a remote shutter release.

Incredible compact camera, with more features than you may ever use, but there if you need them. So many easy to use special situation programs that are super easy to use and understand. Picture and video quality is second to none in the compact camera market.

Pros: Packed full of features that are easy to use and understand. Menus are explanatory and intuitive. Camera is super functional and takes incredible pictures and video in all kinds of challenging conditions.

Cons: The only thing I might say, although hard to say anything negative, is that the flash is potentially a little fragile.

Best Point & Shoot I have used

Allan. from Sherman Oaks, CA on 9/26/2016

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I shoot a Canon D70; but, its often too much to carry around - the SonyRX 100 M2 is the best point & shoot alternative. Takes great photos in every setting.

Pros: Small/ Compact - full of features. Articulated screen Wi-Fi

Cons: Would be nice to have a viewfinder; but, not worth the extra $$ imo. The zoom is a bit slow to focus.

    Great little camera

    Nick from California on 10/10/2015

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a fantastic little camera. There are a couple gripes though. When zooming, your aperture rises quickly, making it difficult to get certain shots in zoomed conditions. The buttons are not very robust and aren't very confidence inspiring or satisfying to operate. When changing settings, there can be some slight lag when manipulating the menus. Other than those three things, this camera is fantastic and I'd buy it again in a heartbeat. The quality is far above what I thought was possible in such a small form. I probably wouldn't look at getting the Mk3 or Mk4 of this camera though, the price isn't worth it to me. You may disagree.

    Great Camera

    Peebas from California on 9/25/2015

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great picture quality yet small and convenient to carry around when I am traveling. Size does not draw unwanted attention in crowds like an SLR when traveling abroad. I did have some trouble with the auto-focus when significant glare was present.

Pros: HD video, size, picture quality

Cons: More complicated than typical point and shoots. Some knowledge required to get the best out of the camera. (but that could be said of any camera)

ADKR from Adirondack Park NY on 12/2/2014

Camera stopped working after 8 months and sent in for warranty repair. Sony claims it was damaged and voided the warranty. As an avid amateur photographer I have had no problems with previous cameras and say this is baloney. The best Sony will do is replace it for $279 (they say that's generous). I will sell the new one on eBay and buy a camera from a company that stands behind their product.

    Love this camera!!

GW from Brooklyn, NY on 8/13/2014

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I absolutely love this camera! I'm not a professional but I've owned a DSLR and a mirrorless prior to this Sony DSC-RX100M2. The main reason for buying this camera is because I hate carrying the extra weight in my bag. Now, I just slip this camera into POCKET and go! I can't ask for more from this camera! Oh and NFC should be a standard for all camera!!! I know I love my NFC on this camera! I need to thank Crutchfield for another speedy shipping! CRUTCHFIELD is the best!

Pros: HD video, size, tiltable screen, RAW file, NFC

    Cons: none so far

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Incredible camera. I am by no means a professional photographer but wanted a camera that I could learn some things about photography with. This has been everything I hoped for and more. The camera has dozens of shooting modes that allow the camera to put the settings where they need to be or there are several manual modes that allows the user to fully control the settings just as with a DSLR. It takes absolutely brilliant picutres. It can catch subjects or objects in full motion and catch the photo with zero blurring. I can also control the camera with my iPhone remotely to take pictures of a group if there is no one to take a picture. It is very compact and can be difficult to hold without worrying about dropping it so I attached an extra wrist strap to make sure it doesn't go anywhere. It takes incredible high definition video as well.

I would recommend this product to anyone with a budget for it

Pros: everything but the price. I love the help button (which no one really reviews but excellent for the regular person) and the wifi. makes the middle man of of transferring to a computer and directly to a smart device a cinch!

Cons: price price price. but still its worth it.

    Awesome little camera

briwil from Loas Angeles, CA on 8/9/2013

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I love the RX100m2. I had the original, and the few issues I had with that model were all addressed in this new camera- articulated screen (which is great, as I'm usually shooting photos of my 3yr old daughter, so being able to tilt the screen to 90degrees and looking down on it while I lower the camera to her eye-level makes the photos look so much better than just panning the camera down to her). 24p is a big deal for me since I make videos and prefer it over 30p any day. And the wifi option is handy when I'm out and want to look at the photos I've just taken on my phone. Plus being able to control the camera from the phone, with a live feed onto my phone's screen, is a great alternative to setting up a timer and running back into frame.

Pros: It does fit in my back pocket, being able to tilt the screen up is priceless, its extremely customizable in that you can program a lot of buttons and the ring by the lens to do almost anything. And of course pictures looks amazing.

Cons: Wish the video had a higher bitrate option, but this is nitpicky because I'm a filmmaker- most people will love the video quality for their everyday use.

Excellent Product Sony RX 100 M2

GDad from St. Michaels, MD on 7/30/2013

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great little camera and has become my "goto" camera. it is replacing a Sony NEX 7 that I haven't used since I got it. Great pictures, pocket sized. My only complaints are 1) A bit small for my ham like hands. Easily over come by using a small Joby Gorilla tripod as a handle, and 2) the lens only telephotos to about 120mm. But the large CMOS allows for significant cropping to overcome that.

Pros: Size, picture quality, low light ability, tiltable screen

Cons: Size (see comments), wifi is kludgy

Small camera, big image quality, great features

RX100II Owner from Cary, NC on 7/28/2013

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

As a photo enthusiast, I wanted a very small camera with great image quality that I could always have with me. That's why I chose the new RX100 II. Having owned a variety of cameras of various sizes, I find the RX100 series to be the best solution for my needs. The images produced by this camera are essentially on par with much larger, heavier system cameras with kit lenses attached. That alone is amazing. Furthermore, the tilt screen is perfect for taking ground level or overhead shots, the WiFi features work well (with some limitations), and the controls are good considering the small size of everything. I would not hesitate to recommend this camera to anyone wanting a truly small camera with great IQ and features.

Pros: Small, great image quality, long list of useful, fun features.

Cons: Some might wish for a wider angle, or touch screen, or... something else. But honestly what's here represents a solid package and I think most will be happy with it. I really have no personal cons to list.

DSLR Quality that fits in your pocket

    Steve from Illinois on 7/27/2013

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I own/have owned some of the finest cameras made (Nikon D3s, Canon 5D series, several Leica's) and this RX100M2 is a fantastic camera. I get sick of carrying a DSLR when it's not truly needed. The RX100M2 will fit in your pocket, and take amazing DSLR quality pics that a phone simply cannot. The WiFI is great and will transfer pics and video to your phone to load onto social media quickly (lower res but still nice quality). The build quality is great. The camera has some weight to it, it will shock you a little at first, but it's made well. Don't worry about the "is it made in China or Japan" debate. It's made well. I'm going to pick one up for my wife as well. An overall great camera.

Pros: -Lowlight shooting -WiFi/NFC (for Android only as of this review) -Compact size -DSLR quality -Build Quality -Too many more to list

Cons: The menu system is not as good as Leica's. Sony should mirror Leica as they seem to have it down.

Tiltable 3" LCD Screen: The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100M2 digital camera has a 3.0" Xtra Fine LCD TruBlack screen with 1,228,800 dots. The LCD brightness control can be set to Auto, Manual (-2 to +2), or Sunny Weather (appropriate for shooting outdoors). You can tilt the LCD upward approximately 84° for shooting low angles, and downward approximately 45° for high angles. The camera has no separate viewfinder.

Image Recording Formats: The camera records still images in JPEG (with Fine and Standard compression), RAW (unprocessed), and JPEG+RAW formats (images from both formats created at the same time). Moving images can be recorded in AVCHD Ver. 2.0 format (MPEG-4 AVC/H.264) with Dolby Digital 2ch audio or MPEG-4 with AAC stereo audio.

Image Sensor: For optimal image quality, the camera uses a large 13.2 x 8.8mm (1") color Exmor R CMOS image sensor with approximately 20.9-million total pixels and 20.2-million effective pixels.

    • Bracket Continuous: The Bracket Continuous mode lets you shoot a series of 3 images, each with a different exposure setting--one at normal exposure, one under exposed, and one over exposed. You can select two different step values: 0.3 EV or 0.7 EV.

    • Multi AF: The camera focuses in all ranges of the finder frame automatically. When you press the shutter button halfway, a green frame is displayed around the area that is in focus.
    • Center AF: The camera focuses on a subject in the center of the frame. By pressing the shutter release halfway, you can lock the focus on your subject and recompose your shot with the subject off center.
    • Flexible Spot AF: The camera focuses on a very small area that can be moved around the frame to the desired point on the screen.

Tracking Focus: If you are trying to photograph a moving subject, you can use the tracking focus feature to keep the subject in focus as it moves around the frame. If Face Detection and tracking focus are used at the same time, the camera will track a selected face if it is registered with the camera.

AF Illuminator: The AF (auto focus) Illuminator briefly provides fill light to focus more easily on a subject in dark surroundings. You can set the AF Illuminator to Auto or Off.

Face Detection: Face Detection technology detects up to eight individual faces and controls flash, focus, exposure, and white balance to deliver accurate, natural skin tones with reduced red-eye. It can also give priority to children or adults. You can also select and register an individual's face to be given priority.

Smile Shutter Mode: The Smile Shutter technology automatically detects and captures a smiling face. Simply activate by pressing the Smile Shutter button and the camera will capture a smile the moment it happens. You can adjust the degree of Smile Detection Sensitivity as desired.

Scene Recognition: Scene Recognition mode automatically detects eight different types of scenes and selects the appropriate camera settings: Portrait, Baby, Night Portrait, Night Scene, Backlight Portrait, Backlight, Landscape, Spotlight, Low Brightness, and Macro. You can select from Auto or Advanced Scene Recognition modes.

    • Superior Auto Mode (iAuto+): Allows you to shoot still images with higher quality than with Intelligent Auto mode.
    • Program Auto: Allows you to shoot with the exposure adjusted automatically (both the shutter speed and aperture value). You can also select various settings using the menu.
    • Aperture Priority: You can shoot still images after adjusting the aperture setting manually. The camera will determine the shutter speed.
    • Shutter Priority: You can shoot still images after adjusting the shutter speed manually. The camera will determine the aperture setting.
    • Manual Exposure: You can set the exposure manually. The shutter speed can be set between 1/2000 and 30 seconds. The aperture (F value) can be set between F1.8 and F11 (Wide Angle) or between F4.9 and F11 (Telephoto).
    • Memory Recall: You can set and store often-used modes and numeric settings for recall at a later time.
    • Movie Mode: Allows you to record Full HD AVCHD or MPEG-4 movies with stereo audio.
    • Sweep Panorama: Multiple images are shot while the camera is moving, and these images are compiled into a single panoramic image.
    • Scene Selection Modes: You can choose from the following Scene Selection modes: Portrait, Anti-Motion Blur, Sports Action, Pet, Gourmet, Macro, Landscape, Sunset, Night Scene, Hand-held Twilight, Night Portrait, Fireworks, and High Sensitivity.
Note: The Program Auto, Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority, and Manual shooting modes are available for movies as well as still images.

Exposure Compensation: Besides auto exposure, you can adjust the exposure from +3.0EV to -3.0EV in 1/3 stop increments.

Built-In Flash: The camera's built-in flash features a range of 11-3/4" to 49' 2-1/2" with the zoom set to wide and 1' 9-1/2" to 18' 8" with the zoom set to telephoto. The flash settings include:

    • Autoflash: the flash automatically strobes when the surroundings are dark or when there is backlight
    • Fill Flash: the flash strobes with every shot
    • Slow Sync: the flash is used regardless of the amount of ambient light, but the shutter speed is slower under dark conditions, allowing you to clearly shoot a background that is out of the flash-lit area
    • Rear Sync: the flash operates before exposure is completed every time your trigger the shutter
    • Off: the flash does not operate

Red-eye Reduction: The flash pre-strobes before shooting to reduce the red-eye phenomenon. You can set to Auto (when Face Detection is activated), On, or Off.

Metering Modes: You can select Spot, Center-weighted, or Multi-pattern Metering. Spot metering lets you adjust the exposure to the subject, even when the subject is a backlit or when there is strong contrast between the subject and the background. Center-weighted metering measures the center of the image and determines the exposure based on the brightness of the subject. When multi-pattern metering is used, the image is divided into multiple regions and metering is performed in each region. The camera judges the subject position and background brightness, and determines a well-balanced exposure.

White Balance: When the white balance is set to auto, the white balance is set automatically in response to the condition of the subject, and the overall color balance is adjusted. When shooting under special lighting conditions, you can select the settings manually. When using flash, you can select the flash white balance mode. The white balance can also be set to Daylight, Shade, Cloudy, Incandescent, Fluorescent (warm white), Fluorescent (cool white), Fluorescent (day white), Fluorescent (daylight), Color Temperature/Filter, Custom (adjust white balance depending on the light source) or Custom Set (memorizes the basic white color which will be used).

    Why did you buy this?

Recommended by friend/professional photographer that uses one as his "go-to" camera when he needs something fast and light. [ R  Mar 19, 2017 ]
Crutchfield offered incentives by giving away free quality items with this purchase. Most online vendors will not offer free shipping to Hawaii as it's not cost effective. Shopping with Crutchfield is a good choice and experience! Crutchfield cares! [ SHERWIN  Jan 10, 2017 ]
I choose this item because of high quality pictures and easy to use. [ CHIEF THOMAS  Apr 07, 2016 ]

The Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-RX100M2 is made in China. [ CHIEF THOMAS  Aug 04, 2014 ]
Hi Colin, Sad to say, but on the bottom of the camera, it says 'Made in China'. Nonetheless, I love the camera. It is small, but it can focus without trouble in dim light, and in bright sunlight where my friend's iPhone took nothing but shadows of her family, this Sony took perfect shots. There is no telephoto, however, for long zooms. [ Julia  Aug 04, 2014 ]
I suspect so. This is a likely the best pocket camera you will find on the market. [ ROBERT  Aug 04, 2014 ]
Mine says made in China. It is a little hard to hold which a review said and I discounted the importance of, but it takes excellent quality photos which became apparent when I made a hardcover book of photos from a trip. I also have not figured out how to email photos yet either. [ JOAN A  Aug 04, 2014 ]
I have owned the camera for about a year and have no idea how to transfer the photos by email. I did read the manual, but am not tech savvy. I own only Apple devices (computer, iphone, iPad). [ JOAN A  Oct 17, 2014 ]
My husband said that it was very straight forward and easy. He uploaded photos onto our IPADS. Just follow the instructions in the manual. BTW, the camera takes fantastic pics. Even in dim light, it focused with never any hesitation. To my mind, this makes up for the lack of long telephoto capabilities. [ Julia  Apr 24, 2014 ]
Fairly simple with an iPhone ... Install PlayMemories Mobile on iPhone Select "send to smartphone" from Camera menu On the iPhone, go to settings/wifi and connect to the cameras wifi. The first time you do this you need to type in the password displayed on the camera. Then open PlayMemories Mobile. Picture(s) will start transferring to the Camera Roll on the phone [ RAYMOND P  Apr 23, 2014 ]
Very easy. First you need to down load the free Play Memories app from Apple App Store. Then go to menu on camera and in play back tab, select "Send to Smart Phone", select the camera hot spot name in Setting on you iPhone/iPad, open Play memories on your Apple device. [ BERNARD  Apr 23, 2014 ]
No. The back screen can be pulled up or down for better viewing but cannot be rotated to the front of the camera or positioned above the camera. [ Abraham  Feb 04, 2014 ]
Hi, The screen rotates up-and-down so you can shoot from waist level or from over your head. The screen does not rotate horizontally nor does it flip; therefore it cannot be used for self-portraits. The camera, however, does have a self portrait mode. When this is invoked in settings and the camera held at arms length, the picture is taken when your face is centered in the frame. Hope this helps. [ Lance  Feb 03, 2014 ]
    Unfortunately, it just tilts. :) [ Terry  Feb 03, 2014 ]
No. The screen rotates down so that you can hold the camera up above your head and look at the screen to frame your photo. Very nice feature. [ ROBERT  Feb 03, 2014 ]
The LCD screen can be tipped upward or downward but cannot be rotated. The only way I can see to simulate this is place the camera on a surface or tripod and control it from your smartphone. The smartphone screen displays what the lens sees. Have not tried doing this but read about it. [ RAYMOND P  Feb 03, 2014 ]
The screen does not rotate that far, only a little up and down which is helpful for low or high subjects but the screen does not flip all the way around so you can take self portraits. Camera takes amazing pictures better than some DSLR Hope this helps [ DARIUS  Feb 03, 2014 ]
Unfortunately NO. I wish that it rotates as well. The screen only tilts up and down about 30 - 40 degrees. Otherwise, it is a great camera. Takes less than a second to focus in most situations, even in low light - and this is the main reason for my choosing this camera. [ Julia  Feb 03, 2014 ]
No it does not. Only up and down. [ Jepascual  Feb 03, 2014 ]
No. Screen doesn't rotate for self photos. [ Dominick  Feb 03, 2014 ]
