Good Sound, Terrible Everything Else

WCS from Wenatchee, WA on 8/14/2020

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I've had this amp for 8 months now. I purchased it for music and because I wanted internet connectivity and two zones with independent volume controls. I purchased the amp based on reviews of how well it sounded and the descriptions of its other features. The amp does sound great. I was amazed by the improvement in sound quality immediately. But sound is where the positives of this amp end. Every other feature in this amplifier is terrible and I am looking to replace it. First off the Zone 2 that they tout is very poor in design. There are no zone 2 features that can be accessed from the remote and the way the zone 2 buttons are setup on the receiver is very poor. Not easy access at all. It totally defeats the point of a independent zone 2 for me. Also none of the high quality audio processing or EQ settings are available in zone 2 output. Another major flaw is that the amp has to be connected to a TV to access many of the setup features. The amp has a screen and a remote and should be capable of doing any setup features directly. Yeah I understand almost everyone will connect it to a TV but that's not what I want to do so because I want it as a music amp I am unable to access basic stuff like being able to connect it to a wired LAN! The remote and the buttons on the amp itself are very poorly designed. There is no back lighting on any of it. The remote does very little for me. I wish I went with a different amp. I'll be replacing this one.

Pros: Sound

Cons: Connections, Internet access, remote, display, app, zone 2, basically everything else about the receiver other than sound. The phone app for this receiver is terrible. It looks and functions like something from 1993. It is not user friendly. I'm a capable tech and audio person, that's not my issue. It has some major design flaws that totally ruin it's great sound (only from zone 1).

Upgraded my home theater room to 4K. The Sony receiver is excellent. I have a top-of-the-line, Sony, 65 inch TV to pair it with. Am still exploring all the features of the receiver and they all seem very sophisticated. Really like the speaker calibration gizmo. Good value, all around. Crutchfield guy got right back to me and helped with the order. I had to redeem two gift certificates to cover most of the cost. Fast delivery too.

This is a solid unit! I am running this in 5.1 config now and hoping to add zone 2 speakers soon for the patio. I ran the auto calibration but did ended up modifying some settings based on my ear/opinion while in my favorite seat. There is plenty of power to hear this well throughout my house (open concept 1800 sq ft single-level). The sound modes all sound wonderful and I am able to find a great match for each of my sources (laptop input, xbox, bluetooth are my mains). I am very pleased for this price range and the available features!

Pros: Sounds wonderful, easy configuration, plenty of input sources to expand into later. It's pushing the lower end of my speaker range and still plenty powerful for my needs.

Cons: Remote doesn't have all input sources available without using unit dial or tv UI. The Home menu is also a little buggy, where the remote isn't registering movement without closing and re-opening Home. Unsure if this is remote or the unit software, but it is minimal.

Great Sound and Looks

STR-DN1080 is a very good HT Receiver. Great sound, Fairly easy set up and slick looks. User manual included in the box is fairly clear but one has to go to the electronic manual in order to clarify several instructions. The e-manual does clarify rather well. I particularly like the different built-in sound effects, that make listening to movies and music to my liking without having to add an external equalizer. I'm still unable to calibrate my Polk sub-woofer in the 7.2 speaker configuration, though. I suppose is due to the physical position, so I 'll have to move it around. If I'm still unable to calibrate it, I can always count on the Crutchfield Techs to give me some pointers. Another con, and this is why I only give it 4 stars, is that the tuner does not include the AM band! In my opinion, that's something that should ALWAYS be included in all receivers. Other than that, this is a very good receiver for its price and I recommend it. I say this was a good purchase.

Pros: Easy set-up, nice built-in sound effects, good looks.

Cons: Tuner does not include the AM band. User manual included not sufficient at times and have to use e-manual.

This is the 2nd of two receivers purchased in the last couple of months. The other is the Pioneer VSX....the pioneer has more features but as a stereo or music receiver it left me wanting....this Sony recv however is a great performing produce. Flawless Bluetooth toggling between devices. It integrates well with google home and my Klipsch RP-6000 speakers. It's my preferred recv of the two. The pioneer I now have connected to the movie room only and my Sony handle all other Zones

Pros: Bluetooth is flawless Power Watts Performance Ease of use Ease of install

Cons: Not enough music streaming apps like Tidal, Pandora but makes up for it with built in Chromecast

Zone 2 doe NOT work as advertised!

Todd from Seattle, WA on 6/7/2020

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

This receiver claims it has full zone 2 functionality but unless you read carefully you won't see that HDMI (digital) signals won't work in zone 2. I knew that and purchased b/c I just wanted zone 2 to run CD/FM/bluetooth content. It doesn't even do that- even after many hours researching online (turns out lots of people have this problem), calls to Crutchfield tech support, and finally to Sony (customer service shut down for COVID). ZONE 2 DOES NOT WORK AS ADVERTISED- even when I did get it to work briefly, it did NOT play different content than Zone 1 (even with party mode on, etc. etc.) . And so now I'll spend another hour taking it all down to return it, and probably another hooking up my old Onkyo again. And it's a pain to even access- unless you walk up to the unit and do it manually, the remote requires turning on the TV, then scrolling to Zone, then turning on Zone 2, then selecting an input, etc. The system is super slow to respond- frustrating- and there aren't enough keys on the remote to do control what you want (yes there is a phone app). Finally, can you please make a remote that lights up when you move it (so you don't have to turn the lights on!)?? Even Comcast has figured that out. That dark remote and the flat headed screw need to be retired. Disappointed with Crutchfield on this one, they are usually great (for decades) but this one slipped through.

Pros: Good sound

Cons: Zone 2 is a bust System slow to respond Remote is terrible System- even Sony parts- don't respond as one

Great Receiver!

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I purchased this receiver for the 7.2 channel and the zone 2 features. I have wired outdoor speakers I bought from Crutchfield with previous receiver and wanted the capability to continue to use these. The setup was easy as this was a replacement. I am happy with the FM reception with the wired antenna, picking up many local stations. I have a Sony turn table, Sony CD/DVD and Sony Blu Ray connected along with satellite dish inputs and all sound great!

Pros: I have noticed this receiver does not emit the heat which previous receivers did. Running cooler is better.

Cons: When calibrating I plugged up the microphone provided and was not working through the menu. I called tech support and found I simply needed to wait until the online instructions told me to connect in the calibration process. I did not see this in the paper instructions.

Outstanding audio and video processing

Crutchfield customer from Glen Burnie, MD on 5/11/2020

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Outstanding audio and video processing and the speaker calibration subsystem is the best I have ever used. I normally have to go into manual settings to tweak the speakers to my satisfaction after calibration. Did not have any need to with this system. The audio quality was a significant improvement over my previous receiver. Up scaling of both audio and video was very effective.

Pros: Speaker calibration software.

Cons: Extremely limited in what inputs can be sent to the Zone 2 speakers. That was a major disappointment to me as the ability to output music (e.g., Amazon Music from a Roku) to a pair of outdoor speakers was something I routinely did in the past.

great calue with ask the bells and whistles

Crutchfield customer from Wilmington, NC on 5/9/2020

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Versatile receiver that's got almost everything I want. The only lacking items: - the FM antenna uses a proprietary connection and the wire is your typical simple wire. A receiver of this level should have at least a standard wire connector and ideally a coax connection. -it can act as a bluetooth transmitter, allowing you to use wireless headphones to listen to movies without bothering others, which is great. However, switching on the bluetooth is buried in menus. It would be nice if this was easier to access. Aside from this minor gripes, I'm pleased with this purchase. Setup and use is pretty intuitive and the receiver has all the bells and whistles I was looking for.

Pros: Lots of connections Easy setup

Cons: proprietary FM antenna connection

The STR-DN1080 sounds great. I like the app and how I can edit the HDMI inputs on it to identify my components, dvd, blu-ray, etc. I wish the handheld buttons could be programmed or be color-coded to match what I plugged into the rear ports. The Zone 2 extra speakers in my other room work but it is a bit confusing to set it up.... only tried it once. I wish there was a button for those on the front of the receiver, A, B or A/B. Otherwise, they function well with my old BOSE surround speakers.

Pros: Good sound.

Cons: Lots of settings and options. You have to read the online help guide for all the details.

Pros:

Cons: My con is about the product and not at all about the excellent performance of Crutchfield: While the amplifier is excellent per se, the setup proved tedious and time consuming. I gave up so far. The instructions are near useless. I know Crutchfield offers help with the setup. But so far it has come down to time available on my end. The Sony STR-DN1080 receiver worked flawlessly and is an excellent choice for music lovers like me , who have collected numerous HDMI input devices such as satellite, cable, DVD, Fire Stick, etc. over the years and a few RCA type input devices such as VHS, DVD, Cassette, Turntable, and even an 8-track recorder. The older equipment requires a separate multi switch, but this receiver handles them all with ease.

Pros: Plenty of HDMI inputs and the speaker calibration tool works great for all speaker combinations.

Cons: Could use a few more RCA inputs but a separate multi switch is an easy fix for those who want to keep old devices still functional.

Power rating may be low compared to other amps but it was powerful enough to dislodge a faux rock from 1969. I have a 5.2 setup with Sony core speakers which match well with this receiver. At max volume there is no distortion at 100 decibels. Sounds full and rich with (2) sscs9 subwoofers, (4) sscs3 floorstanding, sscs8 center, (2) sscse atmos. . Was rocking some bass heavy music one day and a faux rock fell off the wall which was glued in 1969. Quality construction back then lol!

Technically solid but mobile app and integration could be improved

Crutchfield customer from San Pedro, CA on 12/12/2019

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

While technically solid, the receiver has a few minuses in the integration, not in performance. The setup menu system is a bit convoluted so you'll want to use the app, right? Well, the app is pretty awful and doesn't manage to work with all the features of the receiver. For example, it was not possible to setup the fixed ethernet - the app kept insisting on setting up wifi. The receiver itself doesn't offer a web browser for setup (like Denon products, which I switched from) so you're stuck with this app, the primitive text menus, or connected to a TV once you can enable the GUI menus (which was disabled by default). Once I did manage to get connected to the internet I attempted to update the firmware but it failed to do so over the network so I had to use the old-fashioned USB method. Once I did manage to fight my way past all the above the receiver itself works great. The reason I chose this to replace my 7 year old unit was pre-amp Zone 2 outputs which the comparable new Denon unit did not offer.

Pros: Good sound performance, flexibility of second zone outputs

Cons: The mobile app is bad, lack of integrated web server for management

Two years of light use and the switch died. No better or worse than other HDMI switching home theater amps (Marantz) I have owned. I suspect they all use the same switches. Good but not great.

Crutchfield customer from Allen, TX on 9/19/2019

Bought this to go with my new Sony smart TV. The sound quality is very good once you fiddle with the different settings. my wife and I are not audio files, but we enjoy the life like sound quality when playing Pandora streamed from smart TV through receiver. Had no problem with the network setup but was never able to successfully do the auto calibration. not a big problem, because I was able to do it manually through the settings and get the sound feel just the way I want it. Some of the settings are complicated, because they can cancel each other out. The documentation is slim, so you need to try different things and search the internet to find out why things are not working as expected. For example, the music button on the remote does not work when you are watching a input that is for video. Another example, is that when you mirror to another device, the network connection can cut off. Then, it automatically re-enables once you stop mirroring. That can be an issue if you are using your smartphone as a remote, because it relies on a network connection. Another quirk is that zone 2 will only work with an input analog source. That means you cannot play anything in zone 2 that originates from an HDMI or analog connection. bottom line is this Sony gets four stars for sound and features, but loses a star because of its many, many quirks.

Pros: Sound, features.

Cons: Many quirks.

In general great reciever. However, it is a huge disappointment that you cannot drive bluetooth speakers (or headphones) and regular speakers at the same time. Thus if you have bluetooth speakers in the back yard or kitchen, you cannot have your main speakers on at the same time. A major drawback in my opinion, and would not have bought the unit if I had know this. ( I don't if other receivers share this limitatlion or not.)

You can't complain about this receiver. It has everything you need plus the HDMIs work...it just works not like others that are twice the price. Sounds is great and it all depends on your speakers. You don't really need that much power if you're crossing over the bass at 90 or 80hz. It's got great separation and dynamics.

Overall an excellent receiver - it replaced an older Denon in the family room. On screen menus for setup and operation are very intuitive and easy to follow and completed the setup without the use of the manual. Sound quality for both movies and music is quite good - it feeds 4 Polk in wall speakers, a Polk center channel, and a Definitive Technology sub-woofer. Purchased this based on user reviews as well as some of the more formal audio review sites - this is quite a good receiver for the money.

Pros: Overall sound quality and ease of use.

Cons: About the only con are the audio adjustments being only through the on screen menus - while I rarely adjust them after initial setup it would be more convenient to have them more accessible.

Easy to setup and the auto tune feature is great for various speaker setups. Even if you don't have a clue how to hook speakers up, the interactive guide is fool proof with pictures.

Pros: Easy setup, connects fast to Bluetooth, remote features are simplified for easy switching between settings.

Sound wise this is fantastic for the price you pay. Minor upgrades that would make this fantastic is a HDMI outlet in the front, which the previous model had. A HDI outlet in the front is great when you want to connect a computer for a presentation. A dedicated Phonograph out at the back would be a nice addition too!

I have been out of home audio/video for over fifteen years. This is my first purchase getting back into this. I am not happy about how most of the companies are not being straight forward about RMS power output on receivers, but that is another topic. I am happy with this receiver and slowly learning to use its different functions. If you are more into audio, this may not be the one for you. If you want a good home theater receiver, good choice for a good price.

Pros: It has many. Good receiver for the price.

Cons: Unable to connect record player or separate amp. So, if audio is your priority, look for one that does that.

I love the receiver and all the hookups you would ever need. The only downer compared to my old Sony stereo is that to access the Bass and Treble controls you have to hook up the receiver to the TV via an HDMI cable to go to the settings menu to make sound and other adjustments. Kind of a pain and not the most user friendly but the sound and power is great! Guess i'm used to buttons galore on the front of the stereo to make adjustments. I would have given 5 stars but the menu to change things is kind of problematic for me as far as being an extra step and a little confusing on remembering how to get there and make the adjustments. I would purchase again and I would recommend to a friend, but would give them a warning about sound menu goofyness.

Pros: Great power, great sound and plenty of hookups and extra features.

Cons: A little pricey and the sound menu and other adjustments is not the most user friendly way of doing things.

This unit replaced a Denon AVRE400, which wasn't a bad piece of equipment. The Sony is SO easy to set up. I wasn't able to use the automatic calibration feature because all of my speakers are bi-polar but thanks to the easy to use GUI, I was able to manually configure everything. And it sounds so sweet! I can't comment on the TV aspect because I have an older Panasonic plasma and an inexpensive Sony Bluray player. One other item of note, if you have an older iPod Nano,, which I do, and want to use it with this receiver, don't waste your time. I purchased an inexpensive rca adapter, hoping it would give me decent sound----it doesn't. I will purchase a new iPod Touch to solve that problem. Finally, I was pleased to find that this unit does not produce excessive heat, like my Denon did. The Denon was well ventilated and nothing stacked on top, but after about an hour of use, you could almost fry an egg on it! It didn't affect the performance but it still concerned me. his unit runs pretty cool even after 3 or 4 hours of use.I bought this on sale for a very good price, after reading a number of very complimentary reviews from trade publications. And last, but not least, Crutchfield's service is second to none. I couldn't be more pleased.

Pros: Easy to set up; more than enough power to fill a decent sized room; seems to have the right technology whenever I upgrade my Tv and Dvd player

Cons: nothing really I can point to. I would have liked to used my iPod Nano with this but it's just too old

This is an audio only review. I'm an "Audiophile" but not a "Videophile". I just replaced my Marantz SR5011 with the Sony STR-DN1080. While I miss the iOS free app and the Audyssey XT including it's iOs app. I purchased this for it's DSD capabilities gives you up to 5.6MHz DSD (2 channel only) and 5.1 channel DSD (2.8 MHz DSD) via USB or SACD discs. I also found the pcb pads inside the box that allowed me to breakout up to 7.1 channels of differentially signalled, fixed output channels. These were terminated with XLR's. The only DSP modes I use are DTS Neural X (Movies) & Dolby Surround (for some music). It loses a star for not being able to decode 11.2MHz SACD. Sound quality for a receiver ain't bad (for a receiver anyway). Regardless of all the reviews. I do wish it had an iOs app but I bought this as stated earlier for its DSD capabiities. Everyone does Video quite well and my eels couldn't tell the difference between 4K or 1080p Video ! One annoyance : I have the Sony UBP-X1000ES connected via HDMI into the STR-DN1080 (Video 2) and the UBP-X1000ES's Analog RCA Left and Right outputs connected to the UBP-X1000ES's Video 1. If I pause audio using the 1000's remote, upon playback, it automatically goes back to Video 2 HDMI input. Because the won't play tru DSD 5.6/11.2 (it downconverts to 176.4/24Bit), I need the Video 1 always on (this is the input coming from the UBP-X1000ES's DAC - RCA out's) because it can do true DSD at ALL

Pros: Breakout pins internally for 7.1 channels of differential output that can be terminated with XLR's (see attached photo's) True DSD 5.1 and up to DSD 5.6MHz 2 channels D.C.A.A. setup easier than Audyssey and just as accurate

Cons: No support for 11.2MHz DSD or decoding 5.6MHz DSD via HDMI from another source (e.g Sony UBP-1000ES) No iOs App No Audyssey style app that allows you to equalize the audio with more detail than the poor Bass/Treble "Equalizer mode supplied in the GUI (graphical interface - on screen menu) Breaking out the differential pairs voids the warranty...LOL !

Setup for Basement Gameroom/Bar. Great sound once set up correctly. HDMI inputs (Cable TV and a PS4) passthrough with unit off work as they should. Purchased Sony floor speakers for front, Sony center speaker and Polk bookshelf speakers for the rear. Knocked a star off for USB not able to use Iphone, Ipad, or Ipod...states this clearly in the manual (missed this when looked at the manual prior to purchase) The older Sony reciever I replaced did recognize Iphones as a USB source, so that was umexpected. Going to set up zone 2 in suana (using the remaining chanels from the 7.2)

Pros: Sounds great using 5.1 lots of options for different setups. Home button display on TV is nice, HDMI pass through with reciever off works well.

Cons: Cannot use USB with Iphone,Ipad, or Ipod (charges but will not recognize device for playing tunes). States this in the owners manual. Work around is of course Bluetooth. But still something you could do with an older model Sony. Wifey was not happy bout that.

This unit replaces a Sony STR-V555ES that was in service for over a decade before failing. It was by far the oldest component in my system. Installation of the Sony STR-DN1080 took longer than a normal install as the V555ES predates HDMI. The old cabling was removed and replaced with HDMI. Setup was quick and easy. I'm using an older Logitech Harmony remote to control the system w/o problem. This receiver meets my expectations and needs. I do wish that it had an AM receiver but knew it didn't when I ordered it.

Pros: Lots of HDMI inputs and straight forward setup.

Cons: Missing AM radio.

I have had a nice system for years, this unit was an definitely an upgrade from a yamaha rx-679BL. Overall - I would say - buy it! you will not be disappointed. I have a set of Klispch speakers, the front dual 8 inch, dual subs, center, and surrounds, it pushes them just fine... awesome bass, clear highs. It is easy to navigate the menus... the auto settings for speakers did not do the job, I had to manually adjust afterwards.

Pros: easy of use, great clear sound, strong bass, this unit was highly rated by cnet.

Cons: right now, I don't have any. very pleased - only thing i could say was the auto setting for the speakers was not adequate.

I purchased this to use as a media receiver for a projector set up in a home theater. It ended up being a long run where I had to use HDBaseT and to my welcomed surprised everything was compatible. This receiver has a lot of nice features and the installation was a breeze. At this point I haven't gotten much into the Atmos setup or 3D and 4K stuff but so far it's exceeding expectations. Only thing I was let down about was that although it boasts AirPlay and ChromeCast, you have to read closely because it's audio only for both of those things. So for worthwhile streaming you have to connect your own device anyways making airplay and chromecast pretty lackluster.

Pros: Nice package, easy to use remote and menus. Zone outputs. Wifi connection was easy.

Cons: Sluggish changing menus. UI has too many ways to get to the same inputs. No video streaming.

So far so good! This unit replaces a fairly high-end Rotel separates (RSP-1068 pre/pro+ RB985mkII 5 channel amp) setup that was 12 years old and quite outdated. Also wanted to simplify my setup now that I am older and have multiple members of our family using the system. Setup was very easy. The auto speaker calibration worked well for me (I have heard others needed to ditch it and setup their speakers manually). I did tweak my 5.1 setup a bit after the auto-calibration, and I think it sounds really, really great so far. Sony's UI from the home screen is very user friendly, albeit a bit slow to react to commands. I have only had this receiver set up for a couple weeks now, but so far am very impressed. I had read many, many glowing reviews of this receiver online, and it is so far living up to the hype. It is the ultimate bang for your buck receiver in this price range and with this much power per channel. I got mine during Cyber Monday and it was truly a steal at that price. Bought it over the Denon 2400h, which I hear is also a great receiver. I have this hooked up to an older Sony HDTV (KDL60EX701) which is next on the replacement list. I have a DIrectv HR44 Genie, Roku Streaming Stick+, and LG UBK90 4k Bluray player all hooked into the Sony receiver, and then out to my TV. So far, all sources look and sound great. Speakers are B&W FPM on-wall flat panel monitors with B&W PV1 subwoofer. I highly recommend this receiver!

After my older Sony ES receiver stopped working(the dreaded Protect Mode) I did a lot of research on mid, mid hi range audio video receivers. My needs were: 7.1, 4K HDMI, wireless and Bluetooth capability, and build quality. Reading several reviews here and on other sites I decided on this receiver. After removing my old receiver and connecting this one, it was time to power it up. I was not disappointed at all. So far I've had it in TV Mode to watch a football game, played a cd in Music Mode and watched a MTV Unplugged concert on YouTube via the wireless connection. The setup was pretty straight forward if you have prior experience. I chose to do the manual speaker setup instead of automated calibration setup, which takes more time but I think it's more realistic sound in your listening environment. Can't wait to listen to a Blu-Ray! Overall I'd say this is a top notch receiver in it's category. Sony has a winner with this model

Pros: Loads of features in this price point. Very good sound with all 7 speakers. So far everything has worked the first time.

Cons: I didn't give it 5 stars because to me, nothing is perfect. This comes close though!

I've Lost My Faith in Sony

I bought this receiver in 11/17 and I'm getting ready to send it in for warranty work for the second time. I will admit this is a very good sounding receiver. This replaced a Yamaha Aventage I thought it sounded good. In comparison, the Sony adds so much depth, punch, and power to music and movies that I now realize the Yamaha is kind of a joke. Unfortunately, that's where the pros end. The first repair was because I kept loosing audio output on anything connected by HDMI. I found if I unplugged the unit and let it sit a while, when I plugged it back in it would work for a bit. I get the unit back from United Radio, Sony's repair center, and it worked for a few weeks. Now, I'm loosing the video from anything connected by HDMI. Same deal, I unplug the unit, plug it back in and it works for a while. Another interesting issue, that popped up the same time as the video problem, is when I use the remote, I get a strip of noise/pixelation across the bottom of my TV. Sometimes this will disappear after a few seconds, sometimes not. And as others have mentioned, this unit is so unbelievably slow changing inputs (or doing anything really) that you think you need to hit the remote button again. You're thinking this while already knowing how slow the unit is. Overall, I own mostly Sony electronics and all of them have proved to be glitchy and unreliable with very few exceptions. I think it's time to move on to another brand.

Pros: Sound Quality

Cons: Slow and Unreliable

This is an upgrade from my old Yamaha 5.1 system which worked fine but some functions were "difficult" to use. This Sony makes functions easy to use and paired with other Sony 4k devices (TV, Ultra blu-ray. etc. very easy and functional. The on-screen menu made setup simple. Connections for speakers and other devices were simplified and well marked. Auto speaker calibration was nice and easy especially with the drawings of the speaker configurations to make it easier for calibrations. I'm still learning from all the various options presented.

Pros: easy to setup.

Cons: Sound quality could have been a little better, but it's great, all the same.

I opted for this Sony because of the power per channel, to match what I was replacing. This is a solid receiver. It has more features than I would ever need. I don't really care about sound shaping/effects and being able to have the receiver stream from services. But as far as the basics, this is a great receiver. Hint, in order to use Dolby Vision make sure to run all the updates.

Pros: Sound is great. Setup with the provided stereo mic is great. Front face is good looking with no bright lights (good for movies). And visual video interface is nice.

Cons: Needs big update right way. When digging deep into settings it can get complicated quickly.

Just to put things in context: the STR-DN1080 replaced an Onkyo TX-NR-818 (NR818 FAR superior in every respect - until it took a lightning hit to the main board). Just recently replaced the DN1080 with a Marantz SR7012 (SR7012 Far superior to the NR-818 in most respects - having trouble having TV/AV/Cable box power on/off seamlessly). With the DN1080 you choose between "sound coloration" modes - there are several and pick what sounds best. The Marantz is more no nonsense .... you get exactly what you feed it (but you can "tone" it in several ways. The sound quality is dramatically different ... but so is the price multiple ... about 5 times. the Sony runs pretty warm - the Marantz hotter (until reorged the BDI Ola and removed shelf above, added AC Infinity 3 fan cooler and cut out and extended a part of the back panel to eliminate the 3" warm air trap at the top - now it's barely warm at high volume)

Pros: Excellent AV Receiver - for the $ Integrates well with Sony XBR and OPPO and comcast cable. Descent sound - range of "modes", good power, wifi and Spotify connect well. With any setup connection issues Crutchfield teck is TOPS!

Cons: Electronics can be sketchy (connect to ROKU then try to change to anything else - it won't let go). As it aged sometimes it just dropped out of whatever it was doing.

buying process from Crutchfield was very easy. Sony 1080 is remarkably easy to set up and very simple to operate. I replace an older high end Pioneer receiver that had more bells and whistles and options but frankly were almost impossible to understand how to operate. The Sony is very straight forward with a good simple user interface on your TV. I was a little disappointed there are not options for different sound for sport and gaming vs Movie, but the overall sound seems much better than my older Pioneer. I am still exploring and experimenting with settings so that may all work out. Overall I would recommend as I think they have created a good user experience and a quality receiver. Disclaimer- I have a high end surround sound system but am not an audiophile.

Pros: competitive price easy to set up Straight forward user interface simple remote

Cons: not as many user options does not support higher end surround sound set ups. (9.1)

Not a bad receiver, a little hard to configure for only 5.1 surround with front l, R,Center,Sub & 2 rear surrounds but finally got it. The auto mic set up leaves a lot to be desired, it kept saying to replace the front right for accurate reading and it was clearly in the open with no obstructions.Could use more power for some reason, have to turn the volume up to around 70 for decent listening and my small rom is only about 12x12. took off a star for Crutchfield service because I did not receive the free cable labels and the receiver was not double boxed to protect it from the shipping gorillas at UPS who just love to toss electronic item around as we've all seen on youtube.Crutchfield used to automatically double box the item from back in the early 90's up until a few years ago.Now I guess you hae to order by phone and request it to the sales person

Pros: good sounding receiver for the price.Fairly easy to set up

Cons: could have more power.not crazy about all the online crap I'll never use.Won't use netflicks, youtube tv, google etc or video games. Should have more analog inputs for tape decks,cd recorders etc. , also should have built-in phono preamp.

Not the High Definition Multi-Room Receiver you'd Expect

Julian from DALLAS, TX on 5/30/2018

Bought the Sony receiver specifically to be compatible with my new Sony 4K HDR TV. Unfortunately Sony's HDMI connections do not support 4K HDR 60 hz signal. I tried 2 of these STR-DN1080 as well as the Sony STR-ZA810ES. The 1080s were not at all able to pass the signal through and the 810 was not stable the screen constantly flickering and eventually going to a black screen. They worked okay with less than 60 hz HDR or if you used Standard Definition. Finally purchased the Onkyo TX-RZ820 used all the same cables and TV and I had no trouble getting the system set and working. Other problems with the Sony receivers included the ability to setup multi-room HDMI zone out. Turning on or modifying the 2nd HDMI Zone always caused interference with the Main HDMI zone. The only way to resolve was to turn off the unit and turn back on. Not what you want after paying for something you expect to work as advertised. If you want a receiver that can handle 4k HDR 60Hz and you want multi-room video capability, this is not the receiver to go with. Thanks to Crutchfield I was able to find a compatible receiver that met my expectations.

Pros: - Good Sound - Compact - Cooler - Low price

Cons: - Not compatible 4K HDR 60hz - Not stable multi-room video

Nice looks, good features. Being able to play music directly to the receiver (via internet or wi-fi) from any computer or phone is great, and Chromecast works fine. Strong features but the remote is missing half of the inputs

Mike from Durham, NC on 3/13/2018

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Strong features but the remote leaves a lot to be desired. You MUST use a menu to select half of the hdmi inputs. Really? Yes. My STR-DH820 (and also 800) which this replaces has ALL inputs selectable on the remote. Its' a big remote - but importantly I can go directly to any input from the remote. This annoys me every, single, time, I have to access one of those, such as the 2nd game console. Every. Single. Time. Major one star ding for this. Almost did a 2 star ding for it. Indeed it probably would have been a deal breaker for me; Certainly would have been for my wife. What was Sony thinking?

Pros: Lots of inputs

Cons: Must use a menu to select half of the hdmi inputs. Really? Yes.

First and foremost the receiver itself sounds great. However I have a list of minor issues that all together subtract one star. 1) the remote control is too simple, there are too many functions that can only be accessed through the on screen menu. 2) the "songpal" app is very basic and it also is very limited as to what it can do. 3) when connecting to another source (zone 2), there are two outputs one analog (RCA jacks) and one digital (HDMI) and the analog out will only output signals that were input from analog signals (RCA jacks) and similarly the HDMI will only output signals from digital signals (HDMI). In order to allow my non-HDMI second source I had to purchase an HDMI to optical converter box to send the digital signal using an optical cable.

Pros: Sound, features

Cons: app and remote are too simple; zone 2

I talked with a supervisor for your "tech support team " yesterday. I conveyed the great difficulty in getting audio output in an external speaker system streaming movie content offered by Netflix, Prime, etc.. The secret is to connect the TV and amplifier with a digital optical audio cable. I returned two components, one X900E Sony and one Onyko 810 because I was advised that the problem was with Arc circuitry.

Pros: All three components are great products. You just need to know how to connect them to insure all their capabilities.

The Sony STR-DN1080 is a really top notch AV receiver. I have owned similar receivers from Pioneer, Yamaha, Samsung and Denon. The sound processing on the Sony is the best. The setup gives you a lot of control and is much simplified. This is a very well thought out consumer friendly receiver. Highly recommended at this price point. It handled all of the HDMI signals flawlessly as well communication between it and my Samsung Smart TV. The manual is minimalist, but still gives you all the information you need to set it up. Nice receiver with lots of features. This replaces a STR-DH820 which pushes down and remains with the Sony TV it lived with. This purchased to properly pair with the Sony XBR-65900E and UBP-X800. I'm looking for some matching speakers to try the ATMOS which seems quite nice. Also looking forward to the bluetooth integration. The extra inputs are needed as well. Just too many things (esp with a son with a game console museum to hook up). Mostly also it just works seamlessly.

Pros: Lots of inputs ATMOS Blutooth "Just Works"

Cons: Wish it had a selectable ATMOS / 7.1 . Even without an additional amp channel I'd like have both sets of extra speakers plugged in and to be able to switch configurations (and corresponding calbration tunings)

I read a ton before deciding on this receiver. Most of the reviews out there from those trusted in the industry like Cnet and Sound and Vision put this as one of the best mid-priced receivers on the market and I would agree with those reviews. I am really happy with how great the sound is and how it has really added to the experience of watching movies and listening to music. I previously had a Denon from 5 years ago that was great, but just not up to dynamics and range that I have heard from this receiver. The overall experience from the user interface is good, although a bit slow sometimes. Connectivity is great and although I haven't had a chance to use the second room speakers (I still need to buy some) it seems that will be a seamless process. I am using the ARC feature more on this receiver than in the past and it is working really well. I have my LGC7 hooked up the this receiver and I also decided to hook up my new apple TV directly to the TV as well. It has been great as I can use my LG TV remote to control the TV, Sony receiver, and apple TV. It is really great to change inputs and use the same remote for all devices. Simplink is set to on for all three and everything is powered up just by turning the TV on and the native LG netflix app is even sending Dolby Atmos via ARC. Awesome! Overall I am really pleased with this Sony for its sound as well as function and of course Crutchfield was great through the buying process and questions.

Pros: Amazing Sound, clear but dynamic Great Connectivity Easy to use Interface

Cons: Interface is a bit slow

This receiver is part of my first ground up HT build and I would 100% recommend it to anyone considering this unit! Anybody looking at this receiver is likely looking for solid unit, with a full gamut of features at a reasonable price. This is it! I purchased this on sale, however, I would recommend it at full price as well. I have this hooked up to a 5.1.2 system. I chose this and ran the DCAC calibration, everything logged properly. I double checked the distances and levels after the calibration and they were spot on accurate to my listening position. Inputs I have hooked up: Set-Top Box, BD/DVD Player, PS4 and I use Bluetooth for music frequently. So far all have been seamless and full 4k, HDR resolution has been passed through effectively with no A/V interruption! Only complaint (while minor) is the delayed start-up when using auto-on function with TV. I use the TV or Cable box remote to begin watching cable which initiates the power on for the receiver. The TV and Cable box turn on quickly, but the receiver takes about 10-15 seconds to turn on and begin passing video and audio to TV and Speakers. With that said, this is my first A/V receiver (have used a few HTIB before), so may be "nature of the beast".

Pros: Price, Power, Fidelity, Value, Flexible Input & Output Options, Everything!

Cons: Slow Start-Up

One can't go wrong ordering a SONY Stereo Receiver. This is an above average system for the normal to picky audiophile at a reasonable price. The menu system needs improvement. One shouldn't have to hook up a monitor to configure. Bluetooth pairing a little difficult. Would be nice to have a Bluetooth Pair button on the front. Also, please bring back an AM/FM Tuning dial. Just because all other brands don't do it either, doesn't mean Sony has too. All in all, I would buy this system again for sure.

Pros: Great sound

Cons: A little difficult to program. Definitely need television or monitor attached. No AM/FM Dial. Bluetooth pairing a little difficult.

I have not yet taken the dn1080 to its permanent home but did run a quick shakedown cruise connected to Ethernet, radio antenna, Visio tv (HDMI) and iPad Bluetooth. It seems like I am always running out of inputs. The 6 hdmi in on this unit and Black Friday pricing sealed the deal for me. Everything I tried worked as advertised, including audio from tv over hdmi and audio from ipad via Bluetooth. The box and ad copy brags about AirPlay for Apple but there is nothing about it in the operation manual and it didn't magically appear as an option on my IPad; but, I did not yet pursue it with my normal perseverance. Despite several emails form Crutchfiled warning of possible delayed delivery (3 weeks) it arrived on my doorstep just several days after I confirmed that I wanted it even if delayed significantly, I will update after I ring out all of the features in its permanent home. Hopefully it will get to 5 stars.

Pros: Six HDMI in. Lots of features and flexibility

Cons: No guidance on Airplay use. Tiny black on black front panel buttons with even tinier labels. I would have to install it at eye level with a floodlight to use these controls so probably will make do with the remote and turn the tv on even just to listen to audio (my most frequent use)

I am replacing a 17 year old receiver that cost more than this one. I have a smaller room, added 2 speakers to make a 5.1.2 setup, a 1080p display and no zone 2. I'm impressed. The sound is strong and accurate. The room correction seems to make my unmatched speakers blend better. But even with all the digital processing turned off its a great sound. I would have given 5 stars if HDMI pass through the system when off. My last tuner (Yamaha) allowed content to pass through to TV speakers when off. With Sony the tuner must be on for the content to be delivered to the TV. Only problem with this is that I always have to watch TV with surround system on (ran digital cable to get around this). I would recommend this tuner though.

Pros: Easy setup. From open box to full setup within an hour. Powerful system for an affordable price.

sounds great. the speaker self calibration was easy and really made my mishmosh of speakers sound like a perfect set. the only two dings: 1) my comcast xfinity X1 box would NOT run when placed on top of this home theater receiver. The Xfinity remote would not wirelessly pair. Something in this home theater receiver was outputting a wireless frequency that jammed the xfinity zigbee receiver. when i moved the xfinity box about 5 feet away, it started working again. 2) the speaker binding posts are a non-standard distance apart (black hole to red hole). consequently, all of my speaker wires, which had dual banana plug connectors on the end, would not plug in. that added a little time connecting all the speaker wires up. other than that, seems to be working fine

Pros: reasonable price, good output power, easy self cal of the speakers

Cons: nothing serious yet

Purchased to compliment a 2015 Sony Bravia 4k TV as well as a recently purchased Sony UBP-X800 4k Blu-ray player. This receiver is a significant upgrade over the Denon AVR-E300 which I have been using for the past few years. 4K HDR support, 6 HDMI inputs, Dual zone audio and video capability, wifi connectivity and support for Dolby Atmos and DTS:X give this receiver great flexibility and ensure a long service life. The graphical user interface simplifies the setup process compared with the Denon and the included calibration microphone worked well for me. The Sony does not support as many third-party apps as the Denon did out of the box (i.e. iheartradio, last.fm, etc.), neither does it allow you to play songs from Spotify directly through it, but, a future firmware update may change that. And in all honesty, I don't really miss it. Most of my other devices have that capability and it's just simpler to stream music to the device via a phone or tablet than it is to fumble through the GUI anyway. Power is more than sufficient for my needs. My current configuration is a 3.1 setup consisting of two Pioneer BS22-lr, a Pioneer SP-C22 center and one Pioneer SW-8MK2 sub (I have a pair of Pioneer SP-FS52 floor standing speakers on order to complete the 5.1 setup). This receiver has breathed new life into the speakers with both music and movies. Music is more enjoyable at all volumes, especially lower volumes, while movie dialogue is now clearer than I've ever heard. I am

Pros: Attractive styling; compliments existing Sony components well. Plenty of power for most home theater setups. Easy to use GUI. Relatively future-proof.

Cons: Lacks support for 3rd zone. No front panel HDMI input. Screw type binding posts.

This a very nice receiver. This replaces a Sony receiver which I purchased back in 2008 which is being relocated in my garage. The new receiver is married up to a new 75" 4K Sony XBR900E WHICH I recently purchased from Crutchfield. This Sony TV and receiver are a match made in heaven.

Pros: Really Sweet receiver!

Cons: None, thats why i always purshase Sony products.

This receiver was very easy to set up and sounds great. Works very well with the Sony UBP X800 blu-ray player and 900E TV. It has google Chromecast audio built in and that works great as well. Overall very happy with my purchase!

Very Happy with this receiver. I've connected this to my SONY XBR-930E with a modest 5.1 Polk Speakers setup. This receiver is leaps and bounds above my experience with my previous 2014 Denon AVR-X2100W receiver which i was never really happy with. For me the sound is amazing and I think this is a great buy for the average home user. I also have a Fire TV box hooked up to this as well and I'm very happy with the functionality there as well. I still have yet to run through all of the set up functions with the receiver but so far so good. I have used the bluetooth function with my phone to listen to my playlists on my iPhone 6 and the set-up was simple and again the sound is fantastic. I'll try to update my review as i get the chance to use the receiver more. I do wish the remote was backlit.

Pros: value ease of use

Cons: Remote not backlit

I think that this receiver is typical of the type of receiver that is sold today. The user has less control of the equalization, dynamic range, volume for each speaker with out going into the onscreen menus. On my previous receiver the Sony STR-DE935 which lasted 17 years, all the functions you could ever need were at your fingertips. You could change the soundfield of a movie, or any audio source from small hall, large hall, live room, or over 15 other settings . I like more buttons. More buttons = less menus. The receiver remembered the settings when you changed the input from CD to Cable/SAT. The STR-DN1080 only has bass & Treble. The initial autocal sequence determines the equalization and phasing to match my room acoustics instead of relying on your own ears. The receiver still has some good qualities. The sound is very good with ample power when I have it set up the way that want.

Pros: lots of power, 4k adaptability

Cons: Not enough control over levels, and tonal quality. The machine determines what you rear.

Great AVR with a flaw

First and foremost, the Crutchfield staff are excellent and the customer service really is outstanding. Thank you! This is a very good receiver, but has a significant limitation. If you are buying to take advantage of the new Dolby Atmos/up-firing height speakers -- specifically, the receiver does not allow height sound output when using DTS Neural:X up-mixing. This is also the case with in-ceiling speakers that are placed at middle height. The receiver works fine for Dolby Atmos encoded material, but the vast majority of content (movies, TV, games) is not currently encoded this way. So, for me, the up-mixing is a significant factor, particularly since the rationale for buying a new AVR is take advantage of the new '3-D sound' technology. The Dolby Surround up-mixing on the Sony does output to the Dolby Atmos speakers, but in my experience DTS/Neural X and Dolby Surround up-mix very differently. (Dolby Surround seems to be better for atmospheric sound, whereas Neural X seems to do a better job replicating discreet overhead sounds, eg, airplane.) This is of course all very subjective (akin to, say, a 6.1 vs 5.1 setup), but given that other AVRs will output to up-firing speakers when up-mixing in Neural X, this, at least for me, was a material deficiency in buying a new AVR. I contacted Sony directly about this, and they told me that they have no plans to update the AVR firmware to fix this. (Note that this issue also applies to the ES line.) Otherwise, this is a very capabl

Pros: Generally great sound with good power, easy set up, generally solid features, bluetooth trasmitting option, good price, nice GUI, nice menu system without GUI, separate speaker terminals for Zone 2

Cons: Does not output sound to up-firing speakers or middle ceiling speakers when using Neural X upmixing, using Zone 2 is difficult to figure out, doesn't work well with google home despite advertising

Upgraded from the Sony STR DN 1030, what attracted me to this model was the 4k pass through. Atmos and the Phantom surround which makes a movie more realistic sounds. When watching a action move the sound isn't constant and overwhelming, instead the sound is when and where it should be and not when it isn't especially the bass. I got a open box and it's just like new. No need to worry with Crutchfield's outstanding service.

Pros: High end Surround sound at a Affordable cost. Quality product.

Cons: None that I have found so far.

Wow, I can't believe how much I was missing, with respect to sound quality, until I upgraded my receiver to the Sony STR-DN1080. I have been using an old Sony Dolby Pro Logic receiver that has served me very well throughout the years. Given some recent investments into surround speakers, I decided to also upgrade the receiver. Was I surprised. I recently tried other receivers and was not happy with the sound quality. Sony, on the other hand, has excellent sound and personal experience of product overall quality and longevity. Great addition to my Sony TV, Sony Blu-ray and replacement of my old Sony receiver...

Pros: Sound Setup Customization of settings Good power output Crutchfield support

Cons: Auto calibrate was far from what I considered the best sounding output. Take the time and manually calibrate the system to your personal preferences. Semi-slow startup when selecting a device

Nice sound. Easy to set up. It acts a little funny sometimes and changes to a different input at startup and sometimes starts off at the onscreen "home" screen. It is very annoying causing me to have to use the receiver remote and change to the desired input. It also will only upscale the video signal to 4K from 1080P. It will not upscale 1080i or 720p,etc. Otherwise, It's a good receiver.

Great product, great sound. No Dolby vision passthough yet

I upgraded from Sony STR-DN 1060 because I wanted HDR passthrough and it did not disappoint. All the features that have been highlighted for this product work perfectly. I only had a couple of problems with it. The new DN1080 is slower than the DN1060, it takes a while for the receiver to start working when I turn in my tv. Be aware hat Sony takes it time to adapt new technology. Dolby Vision is already available on select d Blu-ray players, but the reciercer wont update the firmware to support it until fall or at the end of the year.

Pros: - Great features for the price - Nice UI

Cons: - No Dolby vision support yet - Some speakers have to turn of when you enable Zone 2

Mixed results

I finally upgraded after 38 years (really). Decided on this receiver based on Sony's reputation, CNET (and other) reviews and the extensive feature list. My experience with it has been a mixture of (1) met/exceeded expectations, (2) don't know yet, and (3) came up short. (1) Overall I am pleased and would probably buy it again. After an initial stumble (see below), setup was easy. It produces great sound and is pretty easy to use. (2) After keeping the same hardware for decades I am in the process of upgrading everything, so I haven't had a chance to test all the features (e.g., I only have two speakers for the time being). (3) I had a couple of disappointments that may not be so important for other people: when I first tried to set up the receiver I was surprised to learn that I needed a "modern" (i.e., HDMI-based) TV. Once I upgraded my TV, setup was easy. More importantly, I have trouble getting good FM reception. The receiver comes with a proprietary antenna. If I stretch it out towards the middle of the room and hold the end, I get outstanding reception. If I put it in any more reasonable configuration, I pick up some static on most stations. This may be due in part to the fact that I live on a hillside, but still... I contacted both Crutchfield and Sony support where I've ultimately learned that the antenna connector is proprietary and there is no alternative except to try going full DIY. Without the antenna problem, I would give 4 1/2 *

Pros: - easy to set up and use - extensive set of features - capable of great sound

Cons: - inadequate antenna (modest included antenna CANNOT be replaced by anything different). I get static - limited built-in music service list (does not include my favorite, Pandora) - requires connection to an HDMI-based TV in order to set it up (but, if you don't want to connect a TV, you shouldn't be paying for all of the TV-oriented features included with this receiver)

Upgraded from Sony STRDH710. This receiver is a good upgrade for newer technology. Sound is clearer and I don't have to use a splitter on my subs. Easy setup on screen guide is a nice touch. I hardwired the network so can't comment on Wi-Fi connectivity. The Bluetooth connection is finicky on two flagship phones. I thought the built-in Chromecast would be great however it only casts audio so back to a Chromecast during one HDMI input. So far so good.
