Worth the extra cost!

An amazing, if somewhat expensive, projector! I had been running a JVC DLA-RS1 for 13 years, which was an excellent 1080 projector for its day. I served me very well. I finally decided to go 4K and bought a Sony VPL-VW295ES (this model's younger brother.) I was disappointed. The resolution was there, but its black levels were actually inferior to my 13 year old JVC. Also the corner and edge focus was not great. For $5K I expected to be dazzled, not disappointed. I decided to return it and try the 715. Wow, what a difference. Blacks are no problem for this unit. It's extra lumens really come through also, and the extra brightness is critical for satisfactory HDR viewing. The 715 also has advanced algorithms to perform dynamic tone mapping, another critical requirement for projectors intending to display HDR content. Otherwise, the user has to tweak the picture settings on every different HDR program watched, sometimes drastically. This unit also has a dynamic iris, a huge value-add in this case. It improves black levels on darker scenes, and operates imperceptibly. It all adds up to a phenomenal picture achieved with minimal fuss (but lots of $$$). I have a dedicated room with no ambient light and a 119-inch retroreflective 2.4 gain screen, and the picture pops with brilliant vivid colors and dark levels and detail. The Sony VPL-VW715ES is undoubtedly among the best lamp-based home theater projectors ever produced. Certainly the best I've seen. No regrets!

Pros: Amazing picture with minimal fuss. Handles 4K HDR content very well - most projectors don't. Excellent black levels. Excellent calibration right out of the box.

Cons: Twice the price of Sony's entry level offering, the VPL-VW295ES
