About the Sony ES UBP-X1100ES

A 4K Blu-ray player built for custom installations

Sony created their ES-series UBP-X1100ES Ultra HD Blu-ray player with custom installers in mind, making it better suited for advanced home theater setups. It is designed to make Ultra HD Blu-ray discs look their best with a top-flight 4K Ultra HD TV or 4K projector. Industrial-strength electrical shielding separates the video and audio circuitry for pure picture and sound, and Sony's sturdy frame-and-beam chassis significantly lowers vibration.

This player also features a plethora of digital and analog outputs, so it can fit in with all types of components and gear. It is even compatible with remote home control systems used by custom home theater installers.

High Dynamic Range gives you the richest picture yet

4K Blu-ray discs with High Dynamic Range (HDR) offer the best picture available today. And this ES-series player is ready for them. On compatible Ultra HD TVs (including these from Sony), you'll get deeply detailed picture contrast. The player will serve up the darkest and brightest content side by side — even within the same image.

And if your 4K TV doesn't have HDR? Good news. The UBP-X1100ES uses special "HDR-to-SDR" picture processing to ensure that movies with HDR still pop on a non-HDR screen.

Sound that pulls you into the action

The UBP-X1100ES plays nicely with the best home theater receivers, too. All the top movie sound formats are supported. You can send three-dimensional audio formats like Dolby Atmos® or DTS:X to a compatible receiver via HDMI. You'll get an engaging sound experience that's worthy of the super-crisp images you'll see on your screen.

A true high-res music player, too

Many of our high-end audio customers use a Blu-ray player as the main music source for their home stereo setups. The UBP-X1100ES features top-notch audio circuitry to ensure all your music sounds clear and detailed. It will play CDs, SACDs, and pretty much any audio disc you can throw at it. And the USB port accepts thumb drives you load with music files — even lossless and uncompressed formats, including high-resolution DSD.

Dual-band Wi-Fi means smooth 4K video streaming

Sony Blu-ray players usually offer a decent variety of streaming video services. And this player even offers 4K streaming options, so you can get a better picture from Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.

Dual-band MIMO (multiple input, multiple output) Wi-Fi gives you the strong connection needed for streaming 4K. Sony designed the built-in Wi-Fi antenna to optimize reception, even on the edge of your wireless network. (Keep in mind, Sony recommends having an internet speed of 25 Mbps or faster for 4K streaming.)

Beam sound to headphones wirelessly via Bluetooth

The UBP-X1100ES has Bluetooth built in, so you can transmit the sound of your movies, shows, and other media to a pair of Bluetooth headphones. This is perfect for late night binge-watching. You can catch all the dialogue and hear all the loud, exciting sound effects without waking everyone up.

This player also features Sony's LDAC technology, which allows the wireless audio signal to retain more detail with compatible Sony speakers and headphones. So when paired with Sony's best Bluetooth headphones, the WH-1000XM3 wireless noise-cancelers, movie soundtracks will come through even clearer.

Its Frame and Beam (FB) chassis helps to increase structural rigidity and its honeycomb top plate, heat sink, and offset insulator feet reduce the effects of both airborne and mechanical vibration.

  • Disk Drive & Heat Sink: Made from quality materials for improved sound quality, the Disk Drive and Heat Sink and keep your discs and the chassis of the UBP-X1100ES cool, for extended viewing hours.
  • Sony Unique Chassis: The player's unique frame-and-beam chassis offers a rigid structure to eliminate micro-vibrations, as well as effective electrical shielding, so all you experience is the highest sound and picture quality.
Note: The ES-series 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player comes with an industry leading 3 year parts & labor warranty, 90-day advanced exchange program, and dedicated toll-free support line staffed by CEDIA-trained product experts (1-877-619-7669; Monday-Friday 10am-7pm ET).

Disc Compatibility: In addition to support for Ultra HD Blu-ray discs the Sony ES UBP-X1100ES utilizes a Sony developed Precision HD drive to help maintain consistent performance with virtually every optical disc format, including DVD Video and DVD Audio; CD and SA-CD; and Blu-ray 3D, and BD-ROM media.

Disc Type Disc Description

Ultra HD Blu-Ray: Ultra HD Blu-ray provides these key features and advantages over standard Blu-ray.

  • 4K Resolution: Ultra HD Blu-ray supports resolutions of up to 3840 x 2160 pixels. That's 4x as many pixels as Full HD televisions, and 27x as many pixels as Standard Definition televisions
  • Wider Color Gamut: Ultra HD Blu-ray can display over 75% of the visible color spectrum; this is known as "Wider Color Gamut". That's more than twice the color range of current HDTVs.
  • HDR (High Dynamic Range): Ultra HD Blu-ray also supports High Dynamic Range (HDR) video. Dynamic range is the difference between the brightest whites and the darkest blacks on screen. HDR means that scenes with high contrast can be shown with much greater clarity and detail.
  • Smooth, Realistic Motion: Ultra HD Blu-ray supports progressive frame rates of 24, 25, 50 and 60 frames a second, enabling smoother, more realistic motion.
  • Greater Capacity & Speed: Ultra HD Blu-ray Discs will be available in a dual layer 66 gigabyte disc and a triple layer 100 gigabyte disc. Ultra HD Blu-ray can stream video up to a maximum of 108/128 Mbps for 66Gb and 100Gb discs.
  • Backward Compatible: Ultra HD Blu-ray players will play all current Blu-ray Disc & DVD content. When connected to a current HDTV television, the player will output a standard HDTV signal. Ultra HD Blu-ray players will support existing Blu-ray media, as well as provide down conversion and HDR to SDR conversion functionality to match the connected television's capabilities.

Note: Like standard BD, Ultra HD Blu-ray discs use region codes. The region code on your disc must match the region code on your player, otherwise the disc will not play. This Blu-ray player is region A and DVD region 1. Blu-ray Disc uses the Advanced Access Content System (AACS) to prevent unauthorized recording of copyrighted material.

USB Port:  The front-panel USB (type-A) port allows you to play photo, videos, and music files on a connected USB device. The player can recognize Mass Storage Class (MSC) Devices that are FAT-compatible and Still Image Capture Devices (SICD) class devices. The player can recognize up to 500 folders/files. The USB port also allows you to enjoy additional content (such as BonusView) on certain Blu-ray Disc titles. Some BD-ROMs have bonus content and other data which can be downloaded to an inserted USB Flash Drive (minimum 1 GB recommended, sold separately).

Compatible Audio/Video/Photo Formats: The Sony UHD Blu-ray disc player supports playback of the following audio/video/photo files recorded on BD-R/RE, DVD+R/RW, DVD-R/RW, and CD-R/RW discs; plus compatible USB memory devices.

Media Format File Type
Audio  AIFF /ALAC /FLAC / WAV (up to 24-bit/192kHz); DSD (2.8/5.8/11.2MHz), MP3 / WMA / AAC (up to 48kHz/320kbps)

Direct Stream Digital (DSD): Enjoy studio-quality sound thanks to the Direct Stream Digital (DSD) audio codec; designed specifically for High-Resolution Audio. This 1-bit format utilizes a stream of very high frequency 1s and 0s to recreate audio waveforms at a higher resolution than conventional codecs. The result is clearer, crisper, High-Resolution Audio quality. The UHD Blu-ray player supports DSD 5.6MHz decoding thru BD, DVD, CD, USB, and DLNA.

Video Section

HDMI Connectivity: The Sony UHD Blu-ray player is equipped with dual HDMI outputs for separating audio and video signals (the HDMI Out 2 does not output video signal). The HDMI Out 1 can be used to carry both digital video and audio all in one cable, plus it supports the latest HDMI 2.0b specification. You can choose to use the HDMI Out 2 to send audio only to your AV receiver and the HDMI Out 1 to send only video to your Ultra-HD TV. The HDMI output resolution can be set to 480p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p, or 4K.

Note: Use a premium high-speed HDMI cable with 18 Gbps and above to view 4K and HDR content optimally.

Ultra HD 4K Playback & Upscaling: With stunning UHD 4K, Sony's Ultra HD Blu-ray Player gives you 4x the resolution of full 1080p HD and boasts incredibly life-like images with a level of detail and clarity like never before. You can even upscale your favorite non-4K video content and enjoy it in 4K Ultra-HD (3,840 x 2,160) with this UHD Blu-ray Player and your Ultra HD TV.

Note: To enjoy 4K, you must have a compatible 4K television connected to the UHD Blu-ray player via HDMI.

HDR (High Dynamic Range): High Dynamic Range (HDR) enhances the dynamic range of a picture, increasing the contrast between the brightest whites and darkest blacks. Every pixel is made more accurate, regardless of resolution, bringing scenes to life with greater detail. HDR's greater dynamic range of luminosity or brightness levels brings greater contrast & wider color spectrum to the screen. This increased contrast reveals the subtle nuances of the image, from detailed blacks and shadows to the brightest whites and colors, plus greater depth. Previously hidden areas of dark shadow and sunlight are now full of clarity and detail. Movies and TV shows in HDR are closer to the original recording and the director's vision with more brightness, contrast and color, for a truly lifelike viewing experience.

  • HDR 10: HDR 10 is an open standard and currently the most popular HDR format on the market. It supports 10-bit color and 1,000 nits. It uses static metadata at the start of a movie to tell the player and your TV that the video content is encoded using HDR. An HDR10 signal contains up to 100x the brightness of a standard (SDR) signal, massively increasing peak brightness while retaining deep and highly-detailed blacks, for an entirely new viewing experience.
  • HLG: HLG (Hybrid-Log Gamma) is primarily designed for live video feed and over-the-air broadcasts. It uses no pre-encoded metadata and is backwards compatible with SDR. HLG's native compatibility allows much of today's existing SDR infrastructure to be re-used for HDR in the future. Standard dynamic range and high dynamic range images are combined into just one video signal that can play as SDR on SDR screens, or HDR on HLG HDR-compatible screens.
  • Dolby Vision: Dolby Vision brings movie scenes to life with striking highlights, deeper darks, and vibrant colors. Dolby Vision is an HDR solution that creates an immersive, engaging cinematic experience in your home. Unlike HDR 10 which contains static metadata and HLG which uses not metadata, Dolby Vision adjusts brightness, color, and contrast automatically for each scene. Dynamic metadata carries information that maps every image to the player's and your TV's display capabilities, so you see more of what the content creator intended.

Note: Please use a premium high speed HDMI cable with 18 Gbps and above to view HDR content.

HDR-to-SDR Conversion: Watch 4K HDR films, even on non-HDR TVs, and enjoy additional shadow and highlight detail. Sony's HDR-to-SDR conversion intelligently scales HDR's ultra-wide brightness range into an SDR image, maintaining outstanding picture quality even with conventional SDR TVs.

BT.2020 Color Spaces: Support for the new BT.2020 color spaces means access to a much wider range of colors than conventional TV signals offer. This ultra-wide color space means content creators can deliver much more saturated and realistic color from deep aquatic blues to natural greens and vibrant reds.

Deep Color: The Sony Blu-ray player supports a color depth of up to 12 bits. Connecting the player and a TV that supports Deep Color via HDMI allows more accurate color reproduction than when connecting it to a TV that does not support Deep Color.

3D-Ready: The Sony UBP-X1100ES lets you enjoy 3D Blu-ray disc movies in full HD 1080p. 3D viewing requires compatible 3D content, 3D-ready HDTV, 3D emitter and glasses, and a high-speed HDMI cable (supporting at least 10.2 Gbps) connection.

Screen Settings: The Sony ES UBP-X1100ES Ultra-HD Blu-ray player features the following screen settings:

  • TV Type: You can select a 16:9 or 4:3 aspect ratio for the unit's video output to match your connected Television's screen aspect ratio.

  • Picture Quality Mode: You can select from 3 preset pictures settings (Direct, Brighter, Theater, Auto, or Custom) for different lighting environment. The Custom mode lets you adjust the contrast, brightness, color, and hue manually.
  • Noise Reduction: BNR reduces the mosaic-like block noise in the picture, MNR reduces minor noise around the picture outlines (mosquito noise), and FNR reduces the random noise appearing in a picture, while IP Content Noise Reduction enhances low-resolution web videos.

24p True Cinema: Movies are typically recorded on film with a frame rate of 24 frames per second. When a movie is transferred to Blu-ray Disc at 24 frames per second the UBP-X1100ES will output that signal to the TV (if the TV will accept the 1080p/24 format) with no need for conversion.

Cinema Conversion Mode: The Sony Ultra-HD Blu-ray player offers two Cinema Conversion Modes - (1) Auto mode automatically detects whether the material is video-based or film-based, and switches to the appropriate conversion method. (2) The Video mode is suited for video-based material and will always be selected regardless of the content.

BonusView: The BonusView feature provides picture-in-picture capability with select Blu-ray Disc titles. You can view additional content (such as director/actor commentary) in a small display window while the movie is playing.

Video & TV SideView App: With Sony's free Video & TV SideView App (for Apple iOS 10.0+ and Android OS 5.0+), you can control the UBP-X1100ES Blu-ray player and browse its content from your compatible Apple iOS or Android OS device. The Video & TV SideView App allows your compatible Apple iOS or Android device to act as a remote control and software keyboard for the Sony UHD Blu-ray player. You can also view disc information and search for Sony Bravia Internet apps from your compatible mobile device.

Note: The Sony TV SideView App requires that the Sony UHD Blu-ray player and your Apple iOS or Android device be connected to the same compatible network with the remote device connected through an 802.11 access point (802.11n recommended).

Custom Integration: The UBP-X1100ES provides virtually every connectivity option required for today's complex custom installations, including IP Control over CAT 5 cable or Wi-Fi networks; RS232C two-way control and IR-IN. A web browser interface is also offered, along with support for ihiji, a cloud-based network management solution used by custom installers for remote maintenance.

USB Keyboard Compatible: The Sony Ultra-HD Blu-ray player also supports the connection of a USB 101 keyboard, which makes web browsing simpler.

Can you play Blu-Ray Audio only disc with rca stereo cable input into a receiver, or must you have the HDMI cable with an adapter?
[ Aaron  Aug 27, 2021 ]

You can output audio with any of the output connections in the back of the unit. Surround sound though is only through HDMI.
[ STEPHEN  Aug 29, 2021 ]
The unit has RCA jacks but only output to stereo and according to tech documentation SACD output to multi channel stereo. My ES 1100 sounds very good with multi channel and stereo modes, but that is with an HDMI connection. It would take a LOT of money for me to disconnect my system to rewire with RCA jacks. Good Luck
[ burns  Aug 29, 2021 ]
You can, using the Sony's internal DAC (stereo only).
[ DavidEFLube  Aug 28, 2021 ]
Will this play DSD audio files from the USB port on the front using the same Internal DAC that decodes SACD?
[ SilverShadow  Jul 08, 2021 ]

I've never tried it personally, in the manual DSD is not on the list of playable music files so I would assume it won't but almost all other file types can be played.
[ Cliff  Jul 09, 2021 ]
I have never tried it, but I don't think so.

Hi, can use this player to play I2s audio via HDMI to my DAC? Thanks
[ waz  May 22, 2021 ]
1 answer
My guess is yes, but you should either check with Sony directly, or confirm with Crutchfield that you can return the player for a full refund if that function is not available.

Can this unit output DSD directly to a DAC?
[ Bob  May 12, 2021 ]
1 answer
Yes, but only over the HDMI cable out. If your DAC doesn't have the ability to decode an HDMI signal you won'd get the DSD music stream. Hope that helps!
[ ADAM L  May 12, 2021 ]
I was thinking of installing this unit on a shelf behind the TV. The shelf has plenty of width and height, but it is only 11.25" deep. Is that enough? It would be fine for it to stick out a bit over the front edge of the shelf, but would it be stable? I guess that depends on how the Sony is supported on the bottom. Can anyone tell me if the Sony has supporting pads on the bottom, and how far apart they are?
[ Wesley  Apr 25, 2021 ]
3 answers
According to the Sony instructions (which you can find at the Crutchfield website) the player is 10.5 inches deep. I can not exactly measure how far the feet are from the edges of the player due to my installation, but they are about one inch from the front and back and half an inch from the side. My main concerns with what you propose are 1) Ease of access to load and unload discs if you place the player behind the TV and whether there will be enough space for the disc tray to fully open. 2) Allowing enough space between the player and your rear wall for all the cables.
[ DavidEFLube  Apr 29, 2021 ]
I measured the bottom pads at 81/4 ". You are good to go.
[ Thomas  Apr 28, 2021 ]
The footers are about 1 inch in diameter. The overall front-to-back measurement is 10 1/2 inches. the centers of the footers measure 7 inches apart, front-to-back. The DVD tray juts out the diameter of a DVD when open, so keep that in mind.

It does play back Flac audio files. I am not aware of any speaker/channel configuration issues.

Is dolby vision automatic?
[ Thomas  Feb 03, 2021 ]
2 answers
I am not familiar with Dolby Vision. However, there is a setting in one of the player setup menus the sets Dolby Vision Output On or Off . I surmise from this that Dolby Vision is not automatic but is settable from this setup screen. I hope this helps.
[ Randy  Feb 04, 2021 ]
Well it 'seems' to me it must be. Lots of computerization and would be very inconvenient to flip any setting when available on the recording. Crutchfield tech is monitoring your question as well. Crutchfield is totally great !!!

Can the UBP-X1100ES transmit the SACD layer of a disc to a Bluetooth headphone? The player's manual says that "Certain content cannot be output to Bluetooth devices due to copyright protection" but it doesn't specify which content.
[ YasMad  Jan 21, 2021 ]

Bluetooth does not do DSD! That is to say the SACD layer (which is DSD) cannot be sent directly to your headphone, that is the job of your DAC!
[ ADAM L  May 12, 2021 ]
YasMad, thanks for asking, since I had not gotten around to trying the Bluetooth function at all, and your question prompted me to try it. I can't say for certain about dual-layer SACD function, since I have only a couple SACDs, purchased since I've had this player, and they are both SACD-only. But both play perfectly on the Sony as well as the standard "Red Book" CDs I tried. The statement in the manual seems to indicate two reasons why any output wouldn't play on a Bluetooth receiver. One being that the Bluetooth receiver lacks support for something called "SCMS-T content protection". The other being that the disc being played has some sort of DRM software that prevents it from outputting to Bluetooth. These could just be Sony's lawyers way of insulating the company from suits involving the incompatibility of the unknown, or future obsolescence. Hope this helps overcome your worries. This is, overall, a great music and Blu-ray player.
[ John  Feb 04, 2021 ]
Sorry, but I can't answer this because I don't use Bluetooth headphones.

YouTube can also be streamed using this unit, but it is not able to stream Disney+ and others too. It appears that dedicated streamers are best for getting Disney+ and so much more. Here's the streamers we offer:

I am looking for a 3D Bluray player that is "passive" (works with tinted non-battery 3D glasses). I may need to replace my aging Oppo 3D player. Looking for a good option to continue watching great 3D. Is this a good candidate?
[ Shawn  Aug 28, 2020 ]

Any 3D Blu Ray player should work with any 3D compatible display with at least 1080p resolution. Your display determines the type of glasses you need to view 3D. Even an old PS3 would work well.
[ Rick M  Feb 03, 2021 ]
As far as I'm aware, this particular Sony player is not 3D compatible, whether passive or active. But then again, I could be wrong (I'm not interested in 3D, so it was not a deciding factor for me). Best to ask a Crutchfield sales advisor for specific answers to your question. Good luck!
[ James  Aug 28, 2020 ]
I have not used my for 3d viewing so I cannot answer that part, but what I can say is that it tends to lock up occasionally.. It will open the tray but will not see a disk. Sometimes when this happens it will not open the drawer again and I need to disconnect the power and let it reset. This seemed to happen after the first firmware update. Currently my player is in an open location where I can readily access the power cord. I have not had this happen on any other Sony blu ray players. Overall picture quality and audio quality is fantastic.
[ E. B.  Aug 28, 2020 ]
I cannot answer. I have not tried any kind of 3D use with it. I am surprised that you feel you can improve on the Oppo, even old, in this price range. My Oppo is about 8 years old & outperforms the Sony. The Sony plays CD's fine, but is bit inconvenient as far as controls ( no random, no repeat) for that use.
[ MICHAEL  Aug 28, 2020 ]
I am not setup for 3D so can't give you insight on this. I am otherwise pleased with the player. Main reason I bought it is because I needed a 4k player that could play SACDs.
[ DavidEFLube  Aug 28, 2020 ]
I can say this is a great player. Easy to navigate and control with the remote. Sorry, I can't answer your question. We have no experience with 3D viewing.

Does this player play SACDs using the analog RCA output?
[ Hank  May 07, 2020 ]
6 answers
Both this unit and the less expensive x800M2 are stated in the specifications to output multichannel SACD and DVD Audio. The X800 doesn't even have analog outputs. The only way to output multichannel audio is through the HDMI outputs. Even my PS3 plays multichannel DVD Audio and multichannel Blu Ray Audio. Be sure to check the setup menu to ensure multichannel DSD is enabled for SACD.
[ Rick M  Feb 03, 2021 ]
Yes, this is the only accurate way to play SACDs using the analog RCA output.
[ James  May 08, 2020 ]
yes, audio best thru rca cables, as there are no balanced outputs.
[ michael  May 08, 2020 ]
Yes, it does. But only in stereo, of course!
[ Cindy  May 07, 2020 ]
Sorry, I had serious issues with the blu-ray playback methodology of this unit and therefore I returned it. As for the SACD feature, I cannot say I remember for certain. But I think Sony SACD licensing does not permit SACD to be output in the digital domain, which would pretty much guarantee the SACD output will be via analog RCA.
[ Richard  May 07, 2020 ]
Yes it does Hank

This Sony player has the ability to decode SACD, will it play HDCDs as well?
[ Hadley  May 03, 2020 ]

[ STANLEY  May 04, 2020 ]
HDCD playback is not mentioned in the instruction manual spec sheet, so I can not assume it will decode HDCD (all CD players can play HDCD, but not all can decode the HDCD feature in the disc).

The ubp-x800m2 and the ubp-x1100es share a lot of the same features, what are the main advantages does the es model have over the ubp-x800m2?
[ Lance  Oct 14, 2019 ]
1 answer
I'm not THE expert on B.R. players but as an audiophile I was looking for the best high-res B.R./SACD player available without having to spend 1k to 2k or much more. This player has stereo audio RCA outputs (the x800m2 does not) and upgraded DAC circuitry. As Sony invented DSD and SACD I knew their top line multidisc player would have carefully executed sonics and high quality SACD playback.

Can you stream Tidal?
[ New User  Sep 04, 2019 ]

Thank you for your question. You can stream Tidal from your device to the ES UBP-X1100ES via WiFi if connected to your home network, or via Bluetooth. To maintain fidelity, it would be recommended to broadcast your Tidal songs via WiFi to the player. Please chat with an Advisor online or by phone at 1-800-324-9695. They will be happy to go over you intended application further, to be sure this would be the best recommendation for your setup.

Will it display song titles etc.from CDs, SACDs and DVD audio without a TV when TV is off?
[ EdWaldrup  Aug 19, 2019 ]

The TV monitor screen will illuminate spontaneously when the CD or SACD is read, but the track title and the art work on the cover will not be displayed. You'll see only the sampling frequency, bit rate, total track time, & the remaining time for the track being played. I am using a Sony monitor.
[ MICHAEL  May 08, 2020 ]
Hi Ed, thank you for your question! In order to view song titles, and other info when listening to CDs, SACDs or DVD audio with Sony ES UBP-X1100ES, the TV would need to be turned on. Chat with an Advisor online or by phone at 1-800-324-9695, should you have any other questions!
