Overview

Our take on the Sony UBP-X700

I recently named Sony's solidly built UBP-X800 the "best budget 4K Blu-ray player of 2018." Soon after that, the company released this streamlined UBP-X700 4K Blu-ray player. If your main concern is the video quality of your Ultra HD Blu-ray discs, you'll want to take a hard look.

Sony UBP-X700 4K Blu-ray player

The Sony UBP-X700 4K Blu-ray player fits neatly in your TV setup and serves up a beautiful 4K picture.

Small footprint, big performance

I recently named Sony's solidly built UBP-X800 the "best budget 4K Blu-ray player of 2018." Soon after that, the company released this streamlined UBP-X700 4K Blu-ray player. If your main concern is the video quality of your Ultra HD Blu-ray discs, you'll want to take a hard look.

This player delivers a sharp 4K picture and features the deep color palette that Sony 4K TVs are known for. The two main differences between it and the 'X800 are: (1) size — this player is more compact, and (2) wireless tunes  — you won't find multi-room audio or Bluetooth® here. (But you can still play pretty much any music disc or digital file on a connected USB drive.)

High Dynamic Range gives you the richest picture yet

The UBP-X700 is ready for Ultra HD Blu-ray discs with HDR (High Dynamic Range). These discs offer the absolute highest level of picture detail available. HDR allows compatible TVs to display extremely bright and dark black picture content together within the same image.

And this player supports the HDR10 format, but also the more sophisticated Dolby Vision™ format via a firmware upgrade. Dolby Vision can adjust brightness and color levels on a scene-by-scene basis. In the right director's hands, it can be mesmerizing.

Sound that pulls you into the action

All the top movie sound formats are supported, too. You can send three-dimensional audio formats like Dolby Atmos or DTS:X to a compatible receiver via HDMI. This gives you a home theater sound experience that's worthy of the super-crisp images you'll see on your screen.

Dual-band Wi-Fi means smooth 4K video streaming

Sony Blu-ray players usually offer a good variety of streaming video services. And the UBP-X700 even offers 4K streaming options, so you can get a better picture from Netflix and Amazon Instant Video. Dual-band Wi-Fi gives you the strong connection needed for streaming 4K. (Keep in mind, we recommend having an internet speed of 20Mbps or faster for 4K streaming.)

Product Highlights:

  • compact design fits neatly into most TV setups

Very easy setup to replace a an old player. Blu-Ray is awesome on this player. It is capable of playing 4K but I am no using this feature. The remote is simple to use. I would buy this player again, especially from Crutchfield as they are so easy to deal with.

Pros: Easy setup. Nice remote. Brilliant picture quality.

Cons: None.

Do not recommend

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I haven't even watched this DVD player but I am already disappointed. No audio fiber optic output. The Wi-Fi is poor. Both my PC and LG TV perform well allowing me to stream 4K without any buffering; whereas this DVD player cannot maintain a connection with the network. Fortunately I have a TV that has enough flexibility to overcome the weaknesses of this DVD player so I do not have to waste time returning this item. The one positive is the small footprint.

Pros: Small footprint

Cons: Limited audio outputs Poor WiFi

Excellent 4K, so-so streaming

Thomas from Hampton, GA on 1/3/2019

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'll give this 5 Stars for picture quality and the included apps. Streaming seems to be an issue, though, with Sony Blu-Ray players. The Sony Blu-Ray player that this is replacing had streaming issues, whereby the streaming program would freeze in the middle of a program. This unit does the same thing. My PS4 never has a streaming issue. Streaming aside, the display of 4K material is stunning!

Pros: Picture quality, included apps.

Cons: Freezing of streamed programming.

Terrific Blu-ray player

Will from Mount Kisco, NY on 12/7/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this player at the same time I purchased the X900F and couldn't be more pleased. Basically, it's plug and play with great performance. I've watched several different DVDs so far and they've all looked terrific. Whether standard definition or Blu-ray, I couldn't be more impressed. It works seamlessly with the Sony television so that as soon as you insert the DVD, the television knows to switch inputs. You can certainly spend more on a player, but this is a terrific pick.

Pros: Ease of use, quality of image, small footprint.

Cons: None.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I needed a new DVD player to go with my new 4K tv. My old DVD player did not have hdmi connections. This Sony is at a decent price so that is a plus. Very easy to set up. I didn't connect the DVD player to wifi because both my tv and receiver are already on wifi. We watched Baby Driver last night from a 4K DVD. Fantastic !!! I realize that most younger people are streaming and not using DVDs but we still own some family favorites and I plan on converting old home movies to DVDs. This Sony fits my needs perfectly.

Pros: Price

Cons: None so far

Works fine, except for...

Doug from Bel Air, MD on 10/30/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The problem I have had is that the picture will black out, very intermittently, for maybe 5 seconds and then come back. Very frustrating and has been difficult to isolate but I don't have a problem viewing other sources. I expect to be sending this back to Sony for warranty repairs.

Pros: simple, no unnecessary frills

Cons: intermittent blackouts

Crutchfield response on 10/31/2018 After receiving Doug's feedback, we looked up his order and found that his Blu-ray player is still under warranty. While his order is beyond Crutchfield's 60-day return policy, he can contact Sony at 800-222-7669 for further information about the 1-year warranty on this item.

Jayandan from Coppell, TX on 10/9/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I replaced this new 4K BD player with another Sony I had which is almost 7 years old. As expected, Sony's are the best as per rendering and also good user interface. Very light weight and has most of the features you expect from a 4K BD player.

Pros: Video quality, user interface, up-conversion, light weight

Cons: None I see now from a budget 4K blue ray player

Great Unit for the Price!

Crutchfield customer from Manhattan Beach, CA on 10/2/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great unit for the price - everything works as I want it to. There are some negative reviews out there on other platforms mostly related to its streaming functionality. I am only using this unit to play BD discs so can only speak to that aspect - which it is great at. The only con that I can think of is that the build quality seems a little flimsy, but at this price you can't complain!

nice and compact fairly easy to set up.picture is displayed on a Samsung 8000. 1080 until I get a 4k tv. reason I gave it 3 stars is it has frozen up 3 times. picture on tv goes blank and no controls work until u up plug it wait to plug it back in.sound and picture are great and player is very speedy. however if it continues to freeze up I will have to return it.

Brian from Portage, MI on 8/28/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Has all the newest outputs and does what it says for a nice value priced player. The on-screen interface is very basic looking but functional. Had a couple issues during a movie where the picture would go out for a few seconds, but I am not sure if that was because of this unit or the TV (middle of the road Samsung from Sam's Club). The noise the unit makes is audible, but it's no louder than what a PS4 makes.

Pros: Good value, functional, relatively small size

Cons: Plastic feel, more audible noise than other higher priced disc players, interface is basic

Flawless So Far

WILLIAM from Fayetteville, NC on 8/20/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I did a lot of research before purchasing my first UHD player. I ended up going with the Sony UBP-X700 and have no regrets. It has been flawless so far playing UHD and standard Blu-ray discs. No freezes, skips, or other problems I've read about with other players. I mainly wanted a player with Dolby Vision at a reasonable price and the Sony did not disappoint. Every Dolby Vision disc I've played was recognized by the player and communicated properly to the TV. I even tested 3D playback on this unit and it worked great. When wanting to play 3D, Dolby Vision must be turned off in the settings menu or you get an error message stating there is no compatible 3D display connected. There's a little pop-up that tells you this when turning on Dolby Vision, but I forgot about it and thought the player was defective. It was me who was defective.

Bruce from Fountain Valley, CA on 8/20/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great unit. I bought it to go w/ my new Samsung 65" QLED TV in family room, but I didn't do my homework. For auxiliary audio outs, it only has digi coax. My wife's hard of hearing & uses Sennheiser RS-175 headphones for clarity. Its base only has analog R/L & digi optical ins. My Crutchfield agent par ex Harley offered to set up a return, but I'm keeping it b/c it plays SACDs. I moved it to the den where it's connected to a 4-mo. old Samsung 55" LED TV. I've ordered an LG 689UBK90 for the family room to get digi optical out.

Pros: Great performance for the price.

Cons: Only HDMI & digi coax outs.

Updated from a Sony UBP model from early 2013. That model did not yet handle CC for Amazon Prime video, and since we do not hear well, it was a problem. The new model does CC on all the video services just fine. Like the newer formatting and snippet preview on the newer model also. Price was great. Salesman was good enough to sell us just what we wanted/needed without upselling to a model that was unnecessary.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This player is compact, and has good connectivity. It does an excellent job of upscaling blu-ray and DVD discs. A lot of a player's picture performance is dependent upon the television to which it is connected. I have used this player with both Samsung NU8000 and the Sony 900e. This player boots up very quickly, and loads discs almost instantly. I don't think that it can be beat for the price-point.Gre

Pros: Fast load times, upscaling

Cons: none for me

Sony UBP-X700

Crutchfield customer from Marysville, CA on 7/9/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Works well. Pretty happy with it so far. I've had bad luck with Blu-ray players of all brands (including my $600 Marantz) failing , freezing up or spreading red dots all over screen once it gets hot. I have noticed that this player doesn't get warm at all. Very happy with that. Picture is great. Some things I really don't understand though. Like how it switches my receiver to Blu-ray when I turn it on. Pretty neat feature. The one minor thing that bugs me is that if you pause too long it won't pick up where you paused it. Overall though I'm very happy. Has lots of apps of which I have yet to use but 4K disc playback is great. Time will tell if it joins my pile of failed Blu-ray payers of not.

Pros: Great picture and sound. Easy set up. Lots of apps. Easy to control.

Cons: Won't pickup up where it paused at if paused at for an extended period.

Sony UBP-X700 - Well Worth The Price

Wayne from Somerset, MA on 6/25/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I needed a second Blu-Ray DVD Player and have always liked Sony products. I didn't need multiple connections or other extras - just wanted a reliable player. Read about this model (Sony UBP-X700) and it had everything I needed and the price was less than I expected. Setup was a snap including connecting to my home network. First "test" was playing a video from YouTube and was amazed at how fast and crystal clear it played. Could not wait to put in a Blu-Ray DVD and was extremely pleased with the results. I have a Sony HD TV - not 4k - and the picture was outstanding. This player has everything I need and I would recommend it to anyone who doesn't need multiple connections and wants a quality DVD player. When it comes to electronics Crutchfield is my "go to" place every time. Crutchfield always has a wealth of information, many user reviews, and an extremely helpful staff.

Pros: Great picture. Easy Setup. Small footprint. Great Price.

Cons: Limited connections (only applies if you need more).

Very pleased with the picture and sound that I am getting using this 4K Sony DVD player. This is a perfect match for my LG OLED C8 TV.

Pros: Easy installation. Great features. Makes my regular DVDs look marvelous probably due to the upconversion capability. Automatically updated the firmware to new version.

Almost every electronic device I have is a Sony, so it made sense when I got a new TV and Soundbar that the 4K BR matched, but I'm glad I went with this one! So far, I think it's been the best BR I've ever owned from Sony! I like the size, it feels sturdy, I like that the remote is exactly the same as my old S3500 (except without the rattle of the loose inside part), but best of all, I like how it upscales even the oldest of DVDs! If only it were an all-region for my catalog of British DVDs, I would be an extremely happy camper!

Pros: Easy to set up and use

Cons: Mirroring did not support iPhone.

Visionary Media Player

Meles from Dayton, OH on 6/9/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Basically a very competent poor man's Oppo UDP-203 media player that also beats the app-less Oppo by including 4K HDR/DV apps like Vudu, Netflix, Amazon, and Youtube. Youtube HDR simply stunning. Vudu playback is the big step up for an external device as both the HDR/Atmos Xbox and Apple TV 4K Dolby Vision/DD5.1 Vudu have many holes in the catalog where titles are not HDR/DV and just 4K. This may be as much as 1/3rd of the 4K titles on Vudu. With the X700 all of these are DV/HDR (mainly DV with Vudu of course.) For my own collection this brought in about 36 titles that I could not see before and matches the performance of the Vudu apps on TVs which only allow audio output by HDMI-ARC which has a lot of limitations for Atmos soundbars. The Oppo looked a tick better (as does the Apple TV 4K for Vudu), but all Dolby Vision content on the X700 looked excellent. Call me impressed and this is just days after the Sony Dolby Vision update and Sony likely to fix many issues with later updates. This player will even playback Dolby Vision sample files via USB. (2.0 is fine for 4K playback).

Pros: -plays 4K mkv's without Atmos (30 seconds to load) -plays 4K disc images with Atmos (very quick load) -for discs and allegedly Netlix one currently must toggle off Dolby Vision to see HDR, but many claim HDR upconverted to DV is better than HDR on this player. Amazon, Youtube, Vudu, and 4k file playback will play back HDR or DV based on source just fine. -external Vudu device that plays back Dolby vision and atmos

Cons: -Vudu currently 60 fps playback only and some TVs like 2016 LG Oleds don't handle Dolby Vision at 60 fps and can only handle 30 fps. -Netlix needs update to output their meager Atmos catalog -no mkv Atmos playback -limited subtitles support for file playback -no way to force player to output DD+ or DD5.1 (issue with those wishing to upmix content to Atmos with Xbox One S which does not accept DTS) -some other minor file playback limitations make this a poor man's Oppo 203 media pl

Great blue ray player. Like the size and got it on sale. Having some issues getting a dobly singnal but I believe it's a problem with my sound system and Crutchfield tech support helping me with the issue.

Pros: Size. Picture. Menu

Cons: A little pricey

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Chose this as it was well reviewed elsewhere. Still awaiting Dolby Vision support but several UHD disks looked great on LG OLED. Bought this specifically to play disks so I can't speak to any streaming ability.

Pros:

Cons: Downsides are the startup being slow but faster than my previous Sony BluRay player. Also would prefer a standard plug rather than the power brick that is harder to deal with behind an entertainment center.

Early Review of New Unit

Dan from Fountain Hills, AZ on 5/22/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This review is based on owning for about 2 weeks, and played a 4k disk as well as an older non 4k disk to check how it uploads. I used to own the Samsung K8500 player, but that broke after 2 years of ownership. This unit works equally well to the Samsung, and hope it is more reliable. It was easy to setup, except the power cord was very short, vs the Samsung (Id guess about 2.5-3 ft for Sony vs 5-6 feet for Samsung power cord. This caused a challenge to install as power strip was too far to reach with my setup. My only current suggest would be a longer power cord. Otherwise, unit plays fine, no issues yet. Fingers crossed.

Pros: Price, Good for 4k and old disks. Supposed to be Dolby Vision ready, presuming your TV is also, otherwise not a Pro.

Cons: Power cord too short.

Great video and audio, including SACD

Desmond from Santa Clara, CA on 5/13/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great video and audio quality for this player. I shopped around a lot for a reasonably priced UHD player that also could support SACD. Finding one that added in Dolby Vision support (hopefully coming soon...) narrowed it down even further. Nothing else in the <300 range had the SACD, Dolby support like this X700 model.I wish the X800 model had the Dolby support, I like the looks of a bit it more. Unit's build quality could be a tab better, it really doesn't impact the performance of the unit. It is small, and has an external wall wart off the shelf power supply, which is not the most attractive but in reality you never have to see it. Once downside are the aggressive CEC commands when you have the "smart HDMI" controls turned on. Anytime my TV would turn on, the unit would wake up and steal the input and change it to itself on my receiver. Very irritating when majority of the time I use my TV to watch content on the Fire TV device - I had to turn it off!

Pros: Video UHD support SACD support Hopefully Dolby Vision coming soon...

Cons: Cheap feeling external wall wart power supply No front panel display or play buttons besides eject and power

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So far so go, just had the Sony UBP-X700 for about two weeks. I've had no problem with the Sony playing Blue-Ray or regular DVD's. It is smaller than my previous Samsung unit. I didn't realize when I ordered the Sony that it didn't have a front panel display. It just has a very small power light. When you pause or stop a movie, it doesn't display how much of the movie is left to play. My Samsung Blue-Ray did show how much time was left in the movie after stopping or pausing. I would have like that feature in the player, but other than that it works great.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I find the X700 to be an excellent player for Blu Rays and UHD discs. It's fast and loads discs without a hitch so far. I subtracted one star because it takes about 5-10 seconds for the internal apps (Amazon/Netflix/etc.) to "ramp" up to full picture quality. My ATV4K has instant full picture quality on all the apps I use. In the end I use the ATV4K for streaming and the X700 for discs..

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I could not much more pleased than I am with the Sony. I have only played one 4K DVD so far, but I have seen everything I need to. Picture is just stunning, and of course trounces streamed 4K content. The smaller size of the unit works perfect for me because I ad limited room to add another piece of electronics. Some don 't like the rem one, but I find it perfectly acceptable. My wish list would include more apps (it has the basic and most popular but not much more) and that Sony would get this Dolby Vision upgrade done.

Pros: Awesome picture

Cons: No DV upgrade yet

This is an excellent 4K player. Haven't used it a lot, but seems to do the job well. Love the 4K discs. I have noticed that this Sony player seems to upgrade regular DVD better than my regular Blu-ray player did. Looked at a regular DVD and it seems to have better colors. Anyway, I liked the player, although it is quite pricey!

Pros: Does the job well.

Cons: Pricey and very light weight.

Except for the DVD-audio feedback feature, which is inconsequential for me, the X700 is technically comparable to the more expensive X800 with equivalent excellent build quality. As expected, integrates seamlessly with the Sony 4K 55X900F in the MBR and performs superbly.

Disc & USB Compatibility

Disc Compatibility: The Sony UBP-X700 Blu-ray disc player is compatible with many disc types:

Disc Type Disc Description
Blu-ray UHD BD-ROM, BD-ROM, BD-R, BD-RE
DVD DVD-Video, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW
CD CD-Audio, CD-R, CD-RW, SACD

Ultra HD Blu-Ray: Ultra HD Blu-ray provides these key features and advantages over standard Blu-ray.

  • 4K Resolution: Ultra HD Blu-ray supports resolutions of up to 3840 x 2160 pixels. That's 4x as many pixels as Full HD televisions, and 27x as many pixels as Standard Definition televisions.
  • Wider Color Gamut: Ultra HD Blu-ray can display over 75% of the visible color spectrum; this is known as "Wider Color Gamut". That's more than twice the color range of current HDTVs.
  • HDR (High Dynamic Range): Ultra HD Blu-ray also supports High Dynamic Range (HDR) video. Dynamic range is the difference between the brightest whites and the darkest blacks on screen. HDR means that scenes with high contrast can be shown with much greater clarity and detail.
  • Smooth, Realistic Motion: Ultra HD Blu-ray supports progressive frame rates of 24, 25, 50 and 60 frames a second, enabling smoother, more realistic motion.
  • Greater Capacity & Speed: Ultra HD Blu-ray Discs will be available in a dual layer 66 gigabyte disc and a triple layer 100 gigabyte disc. Ultra HD Blu-ray can stream video up to a maximum of 108/128 Mbps for 66Gb and 100Gb discs.
  • Backward Compatible: Ultra HD Blu-ray players will play all current Blu-ray Disc & DVD content. When connected to a current HDTV television, the player will output a standard HDTV signal. Ultra HD Blu-ray players will support existing Blu-ray media, as well as provide down conversion and HDR to SDR conversion functionality to match the connected television's capabilities.

Note: Like standard BD, Ultra HD Blu-ray discs use region codes. The region code on your disc must match the region code on your player, otherwise the disc will not play. This Blu-ray player is region A and DVD region 1. Blu-ray Disc uses the Advanced Access Content System (AACS) to prevent unauthorized recording of copyrighted material.

USB Port: The front-panel USB (type-A) port allows you to play photo, videos, and music files on a connected USB device. The player can recognize Mass Storage Class (MSC) Devices that are FAT-compatible and Still Image Capture Devices (SICD) class devices. The player can recognize up to 500 folders/files. The USB port also allows you to enjoy additional content (such as BonusView) on certain Blu-ray Disc titles. Some BD-ROMs have bonus content and other data which can be downloaded to an inserted USB Flash Drive (minimum 1 GB recommended, sold separately).

Compatible Audio/Video/Photo Formats: The Sony UHD Blu-ray disc player supports playback of the following audio/video/photo files recorded on BD-R/RE, DVD+R/RW, DVD-R/RW, and CD-R/RW discs; plus compatible USB memory devices.

Media Format File Type
Audio High Resolution: AIFF /ALAC /FLAC / WAV (up to 24-bit/192kHz); DSD (2.8/5.8/11.2MHz)
Compressed: MP3 / WMA / AAC (up to 48kHz/320kbps)
Video AVCHD, AVI, FLV, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, Motion JPEG, MKV, WMV9, XVID
Photo JPEG, GIF, PNG, BMP, MPO, WEBP

Direct Stream Digital (DSD): Enjoy studio-quality sound thanks to the Direct Stream Digital (DSD) audio codec; designed specifically for High-Resolution Audio. This 1-bit format utilizes a stream of very high frequency 1s and 0s to recreate audio waveforms at a higher resolution than conventional codecs. The result is clearer, crisper, High-Resolution Audio quality. The UHD Blu-ray player supports DSD 5.6MHz decoding thru BD, DVD, CD, USB, and DLNA.

Video Section

HDMI 2.0a Output + HDMI Audio Only Output: The Sony UHD Blu-ray player is equipped with dual HDMI outputs for separating audio and video signals (the HDMI Out 2 does not output video signal). The HDMI Out 1 can be used to carry both digital video and audio all in one cable, plus it supports the latest HDMI 2.0a spec. You can choose to use the HDMI Out 2 to send audio only to your AV receiver and the HDMI Out 1 to send only video to your Ultra-HD TV. The HDMI output resolution can be set to 480p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p, or 4K.

Note: Use a premium high-speed HDMI cable with 18 Gbps and above to view 4K and HDR content optimally.

Ultra HD 4K Playback & Upscaling: With stunning UHD 4K, Sony's Ultra HD Blu-ray Player gives you 4x the resolution of full 1080p HD and boasts incredibly life-like images with a level of detail and clarity like never before. You can even upscale your favorite non-4K video content and enjoy it in 4K Ultra-HD (3,840 x 2,160) with this UHD Blu-ray Player and your Ultra HD TV.

Note: To enjoy 4K, you must have a compatible 4K television connected to the UHD Blu-ray player via HDMI.

HDR (High Dynamic Range) Video: With HDR (High Dynamic Range) technology, the Ultra HD Blu-ray Player delivers dynamic UHD content in exceptional quality with a greater range of color contrast and brightness, enhancing details from the original film format. Experience sharp contrasts and brightness with deeper blacks and brighter whites. The UBP-X700 supports HDR 10 right out of the box and Dolby Vision through a now available firmware update.

  • HDR 10: HDR 10 video signals contain up to 100x the brightness of a standard (SDR) signal, massively increasing peak brightness while retaining deep and highly detailed blacks, for an incredible viewing experience.
  • Dolby Vision (Firmware Update Available): Dolby Vision is an HDR solution that creates an even greater immersive, engaging cinematic experience in your home. Using dynamic metadata information, Dolby Vision brings scenes to life with striking highlights, deeper darks, and vibrant colors. Dolby Vision will require a future firmware update scheduled for summer 2018.
HDR-to-SDR Conversion: Watch 4K HDR films, even on non-HDR TVs, and enjoy additional shadow and highlight detail. Sony's HDR-to-SDR conversion intelligently scales HDR's ultra-wide brightness range into an SDR image, maintaining outstanding picture quality even with conventional SDR TV.

BT.2020 Color Spaces: Support for the new BT.2020 color spaces means access to a much wider range of colors than conventional TV signals offer. This ultra-wide color space means content creators can deliver much more saturated and realistic color from deep aquatic blues to natural greens and vibrant reds.

Deep Color (12-Bit): The Sony Blu-ray player supports a color depth of up to 12 bits. Connecting the player and a TV that supports Deep Color via HDMI allows more accurate color reproduction than when connecting it to a TV that does not support Deep Color.

3D-Ready: The Sony UBP-X700 lets you enjoy 3D Blu-ray disc movies in full HD 1080p. 3D viewing requires compatible 3D content, 3D-ready HDTV, 3D emitter and glasses, and a high-speed HDMI cable (supporting at least 10.2 Gbps) connection.

Screen Settings: The Sony UBP-X700 Ultra-HD Blu-ray player features the following screen settings:

  • TV Type: You can select a 16:9 or 4:3 aspect ratio for the unit's video output to match your connected Television's screen aspect ratio.
  • Screen Size: For 3D viewing, you will need to set the screen size of your 3D-compatible TV.
  • Screen Format: You can select the display configuration for a 4:3 screen picture on a 16:9 wide screen television. You can choose Full or Normal (select when connected to a TV with a wide mode function; displays a 4:3 screen picture in 16:9 aspect ratio even on a wide-screen TV) or Normal (changes the picture size to fit the screen size with the original picture aspect ratio).
  • DVD Aspect Ratio: You can select the display configuration for playback of 16:9 screen pictures on a 4:3 screen TV. You can select from Letter Box or Pan & Scan.

Video Settings: The Sony UBP-X700 Ultra-HD Blu-ray player offers the following video adjustments:

  • Picture Quality Mode: You can select from 3 preset pictures settings (Direct, Brighter, Theater, Auto, or Custom) for different lighting environment. The Custom mode lets you adjust the contrast, brightness, color, and hue manually.
  • Noise Reduction: BNR reduces the mosaic-like block noise in the picture, MNR reduces minor noise around the picture outlines (mosquito noise), and FNR reduces the random noise appearing in a picture, while IP Content Noise Reduction enhances low-resolution web videos.

24p Output: Movies are typically recorded on film with a frame rate of 24 frames per second. When a movie is transferred to Blu-ray Disc at 24 frames per second the UBP-X700 will output that signal to the TV (if the TV will accept the 1080p/24 format) with no need for conversion.

Cinema Conversion Mode: The Sony Ultra-HD Blu-ray player offers two Cinema Conversion Modes - (1) Auto mode automatically detects whether the material is video-based or film-based, and switches to the appropriate conversion method. (2) The Video mode is suited for video-based material and will always be selected regardless of the content.

BonusView: The BonusView feature provides picture-in-picture capability with select Blu-ray Disc titles. You can view addition content (such as director/actor commentary) in a small display window while the movie is playing.

Audio Section

Surround Sound Decoders: The Sony UBP-X700 UHD Blu-ray player has built-in Dolby Digital and DTS surround processors with support for Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD High Resolution, and DTS-HD Master Audio. Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, and DTS-HD are only output via the player's HDMI output.

  • Dolby Digital Plus: Dolby Digital Plus was developed as an extension to Dolby Digital. The audio coding technology supports 7.1 channel surround sound. Dolby Digital Plus also includes the standard Dolby Digital bit stream and is compatible with all current Dolby Digital processors using the coaxial digital output.
  • Dolby TrueHD: Dolby TrueHD is a lossless coding technology that supports up to 8 channels of multi-channel surround sound for the next generation optical discs. The reproduced sound is true to the original source bit-for-bit.
  • DTS-HD High Resolution Audio: DTS-HD High Resolution Audio supports a maximum sampling frequency of 96 kHz, and 7.1 multi-channel surround. DTS-HD High Resolution Audio has a maximum transmission rate of 6 Mbps, with a lossy compression.
  • DTS-HD Master Audio: DTS-HD Master Audio has a maximum transmission rate of 24.5 Mbps and uses lossless compression (Lossless), and DTS-HD Master Audio corresponds to a maximum sampling frequency of 192 kHz, and maximum of 7.1ch.
Note: If you have an AV receiver which decodes Dolby Atmos or DTS:X, you will need to set this UHD Blu-ray player's HDMI output to bitstream. It also streams Dolby Atmos movies from built-in apps (service and movie must support Dolby Atmos).

Coaxial Digital Output: In addition to HDMI connectivity, the Sony UBP-X700 is equipped with a coaxial (RCA) digital output. The Audio menu allows you to select the digital audio format that is passed through the coaxial digital output. Settings allow you to transfer Dolby Digital and/or DTS sound tracks, or down-mix surround bitstreams to 2-channel PCM audio.

Note: This player is not equipped with any analog audio outputs.

AV Sync: AV Sync adjusts the gap between picture and sound, by delaying the sound output in relation to the picture output (0 to 120 milliseconds).

Digital Music Enhancer: The Digital Music Enhancer helps to highly compressed music files sound better.

Audio DRC: The player offers three dynamic range compression levels - Auto (Blu-ray only), On, or Off.

This unit is capable of checking the firmware automatically when connected to the Internet via broadband connection. Visit the Sony eSupport Site for the latest firmware update information.

Remote Control

Multibrand Remote: The supplied remote operates The UHD Blu-ray player and a Sony TV's power on/off, input select, and volume up/down. The remote even has a dedicated Netflix button for immediate access to your Netflix movies. The remote is also pre-programmed with power, input, and volume controls for several other brand TVs.

HDMI Control (Bravia Sync): Sony & other brand components compatible with the HDMI Control function can be controlled via the HDMI connection. This includes convenient features like One-Touch Play and System Power-Off.

Video & TV SideView App: With Sony's free Video & TV SideView App (for Apple iOS 9.0+ and Android OS 4.4+), you can control the UBP-X700 Blu-ray player and browse its content from your compatible Apple iOS or Android OS device. The Video & TV SideView App allows your compatible Apple iOS or Android device to act as a remote control and software keyboard for the Sony UHD Blu-ray player. You can also view disc information and search for Sony Bravia Internet apps from your compatible mobile device.

Note: The Sony TV SideView App requires that the Sony UHD Blu-ray player and your Apple iOS or Android device be connected to the same compatible network with the remote device connected through an 802.11 access point (802.11n recommended).

USB Keyboard Compatible: The Sony Ultra-HD Blu-ray player also supports the connection of a USB 101 keyboard, which makes web browsing simpler.

11 questions already asked

No the player will play sacd and will output on rca and hdmi [ DENNIS  Dec 22, 2018 ]
I do not know. [ M Thomas  Dec 22, 2018 ]
Sorry, I have only used the HDMI output. Don't know why it wouldn't though. [ KENT M  Nov 13, 2018 ]
All of that info is detailed nicely in the "Owner's Manual".. Crutchfield wisely provides a link to the manuals for most items listed on their site.. Go to Critchfield's Sony UBP-X700 page and peruse the "Overview" section where you will find "Wat's in the box:".. Directly under "What's in the box:" will be the link to the manual.. Enjoy.. [ Richard E.  Oct 28, 2018 ]
Guys, I wish I could help you with this, but I can't! Sorry! If you ask me how to set the valve gap on a early 60's straight 6 Ford, or the firing order for the British 2.25L engine used on Land Rovers, I could help you, but to be honest, for this kind of stuff-I call Crutchfield!! [ Paul  Oct 28, 2018 ]
The following is listed w/ the description. I have never done it but one would think it was doable. [ Wayne  Oct 27, 2018 ]
? [ Grady  Oct 27, 2018 ]
I purchased a 2 terabyte Western Digital Passport . You pick if you want the Mac version or Pc version . The drive is already formatted in Ntfs. I have 200 movies on one of my drive . You can also connect the drive to your WiFi router with a usb 3.0 jack , choose the network icon on the Sony Blu-ray player. Now you have a media server . [ Dale  Oct 28, 2018 ]
It can play videos according to the linked owners manual. I don't see the format listed specifically but FAT32 or ExFat are supported by Sony TVs. If partition size is a concern look at the network playback options and it would be less relevant. [ Rob McAninch  Oct 27, 2018 ]
Sorry I do not know. [ M Thomas  Oct 27, 2018 ]
I hesitate to try to answer this as I'm more of an audiophile wanna-be. I have an Emotiva CD player that I use primarily but for multi-channel I have to use the Blu-ray with Anthem 520 receiver. My current SACD's are Tumbleweed Connection, Brothers In Arms, Pink Floyd box w/ AHM quad mix, and DSOTM Immersion box. I think they all sound wonderful. Also being somewhat of a pack rat I'd caution against getting rid of anything that's still operational. [ John  Oct 09, 2018 ]
This unit plays MP3 and a bunch of other compressed formats & audio CD's, DVD's, Blu-Ray's and 4k discs very well. As far as I know it does not play SACD or DVD-audio discs or any of the specialty discs, but you would need to ask Sony about it. I don't have any more of those type discs anymore. [ KENT M  Oct 04, 2018 ]
I think wireless capabilities is the only thing. Check out the comparison page to confirm. [ John  Sep 05, 2018 ]
The 800 is larger in size and little bit better made for me it came down to size the picture and sound will be the same [ DENNIS  Sep 03, 2018 ]
I can only tell you about the Sony UBP-X700 which I am very pleased with. There is plenty of info and reviews about both on the web. After that, you decide. BTW the Sony UBP-X700 is cheaper and is upgradeable to Dolby Vision(DV) in about three minutes with a USB flash drive. The X800 does not have the DV option. I hope your question is answered. [ LUIS A  Sep 03, 2018 ]
The 700 supports Dolby Vision. The 800 doesn't. The 800 has a Bluetooth transmitter that sends audio from the player to Bluetooth-compatible headphones or speakers. The 700 doesn't. The 800 has free downloadable Sony SongPAL app (available from iTunes Store and Google Play) helps connect the player to your wireless network and controls playback, and volume. Also gives you control over other compatible Sony speakers as part of a multi-room music system and is Spotify® Connect compatible. The 700 isn't. The 800 has BD-Live and BonusView support for added bonus features with compatible discs (requires external USB storage device)/ The 700 doesn't. [ Nathan  Sep 03, 2018 ]
The only difference I am aware of other than the price is that the X800 will play DVD Audio. [ RICK  Sep 03, 2018 ]
Definitely not. there is no mounting option for this and the disc drawer does not have any center clip to hold the disc from falling out if mounted vertically. [ David  Aug 17, 2018 ]
The unit doesn't come with any type of mounts or any brackets. You could probably make some. They would have to be external. Wouldn't recommend drilling any holes in the chassis. Hope that helps. [ ERNEST  Aug 17, 2018 ]
I have no idea and I can't imagine why one would want to do that in the first place. I would worry about it working properly if it weren't horizontal. I wouldn't try it. [ David  Aug 16, 2018 ]
As far as I know, I would say no. It might work, but the disc would fall out of the tray when you eject it. See if you can find a BR player that doesn't have a tray load. [ KENT M  Aug 16, 2018 ]
No [ George  Aug 16, 2018 ]

Yes. It has a Lan connection. [ Paul  Apr 22, 2018 ]
Yes it can. That's the way I set mine up. You need to be able to connect an ethernet cable to your router, or to something like a mega gigabit switch which is connected to the router. [ ROBERT  Apr 22, 2018 ]
Yes it has a port for that [ Christian  Apr 22, 2018 ]

Yes, this was announced at the beginning of the year at CES. It will be getting the DV update in a few months according to Sony. [ Gerard  Apr 21, 2018 ]
yes [ Sam  Apr 21, 2018 ]
Yes it is. It supports HDR10 and at some point this year (2018) it will get an update to support Dolby Vision (it might now, but I wouldn't know as my TV doesn't support DV). [ Patrick  Apr 21, 2018 ]
Sure is great player [ Mark  Apr 21, 2018 ]
The product description says "new" so I have to think that it is. [ David  Apr 21, 2018 ]
Enter an answer to this question. As far as I know, it is. It was purchased new from Crutchfield. I noticed a significant difference between a 4K and a BR disc. One thing that I didn't expect was how much better this machine upgrades regular DVD's over my old BR player. The only "bad" thing about this unit is how light it is. Moves around easily, but is fine when just playing a disc. Hope this helps. [ KENT M  Apr 21, 2018 ]
