Overview

Our take on the Sony UBP-X800

Sony took their time to release the UBP-X800 Ultra HD Blu-ray player — they wanted to do it right. Good call. They've created a solidly built home theater component that will push your 4K Ultra HD TV to perform its best. This versatile player will serve up Ultra HD Blu-ray discs with their full 4K resolution and wide, vivid color spectrum. It also plays pretty much any other movie and music disc or digital file out there — and yep, it will even stream Netflix® in 4K.

The Sony UBP-X800 4K Blu-ray player has a frame-and-beam chassis for less vibration.

Sony's first 4K Blu-ray player is worth the wait

Sony took their time to release the UBP-X800 Ultra HD Blu-ray player — they wanted to do it right. Good call. They've created a solidly built home theater component that will push your 4K Ultra HD TV to perform its best. High Dynamic Range gives you the richest picture yet

4K Blu-ray discs with High Dynamic Range (HDR) offer the best picture available today. And the UBP-X800 is ready for them. On compatible Ultra HD TVs (including these from Sony), you'll get deeply detailed picture contrast. We're talking the darkest and brightest content side by side in the same image.

Sound that pulls you into the action

All the top movie sound formats are supported, too. You can send three-dimensional audio formats like Dolby Atmos or DTS:X to a compatible receiver via HDMI. This gives you a home theater sound experience that's worthy of the super-crisp images you'll see on your screen.

A true high-res music player, too

The UBP-X800's high-grade internal digital-to-analog converter ensures all your music sounds clear and detailed. The USB port accepts thumb drives you load with music files — even lossless and uncompressed formats, including high-resolution DSD. Plus, when you connect the player to your network via Wi-Fi, it becomes the gateway to a whole-home audio system.

Dual-band Wi-Fi means smooth 4K video streaming...

Sony Blu-ray players usually offer a decent variety of streaming video services. And this player even offers 4K streaming options, so you can get a better picture from Netflix and Amazon Instant Video.

Dual-band Wi-Fi gives you the strong connection needed for streaming 4K. (Keep in mind, we recommend having an internet speed of 20Mbps or faster for 4K streaming.)

...and multi-room music, too

Along with all the streaming video goodness, this player also turns your connected home theater speakers into a wireless music hub. Download Sony's free SongPAL™ app, and control the player from your iOS® or Android™ device. The app gives you wireless access to the music stored on your phone or a DLNA-connected server, plus streaming services like Spotify® Connect.

You can also control other compatible Sony speakers and components — all from the same SongPAL app. Listen to different songs in each room, or the same thing throughout the house. You can even stream movie or music audio from the UBP-X800 to other rooms.

Beam sound to headphones wirelessly via Bluetooth

The UBP-X800 built-in Bluetooth can transmit the sound of your movies, shows, and other media to a pair of Bluetooth headphones. This is perfect for late night binge-watching. You can catch all the dialogue and hear all the loud, exciting sound effects without waking everyone up.

Easy set up, good picture, and has a manual with it. (today it seems we always have to download one) . I have a few things to set up and find out about it like changing a setting to bit sound output in order to get Dolby Atmos but I will figure that all out quickly.

Great unit, get new cables!

Allen from Summerfield, NC on 12/9/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Did my research as this is supporting a well designed atmos home theater. At first I couldn't get a display, troubleshooting was actually helpful as the suggestion was to reduce the resolution to the minimum. Voila, now I can get into the setup menu and see what's going on. Turns out I had an older hdmi cable that wouldn't support higher resolution, with that swapped the tv and the ubp had a chat without my input and automatically upgraded the resolution. I had new hdmi cables on hand but hadn't bothered with the one in the wall. So, the unit will upscale but won't downscale. If you have hdmi cables that are more than 2 years old think about ordering new ones. In this case my cable signal got an improvement as well. Crutchfield was great as always, I chatted with an advisor before purchasing and used my rewards points towards the purchase. My concern was that they would go on super sale but with the 60 day price guarantee no worries. Picture is great, even an upconverted blu ray is theater quality. Now trying to figure out which DVDs to swap out for 4k, not enough difference to justify replacing blu rays unless for the hi def audio.

Pros: Picture quality

Cons: Default resolution may leave you with no display if you have older cables

great picture

Carl from Lake City, Florida on 12/4/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased Sony mostly for the Dolby Atmos and DTS-X formats. Real easy to set up, one cable to my receiver, and a flick of a setting in the menu changed the PCM over to bitstream. Had Dolby Atmos coming in on the movie. 13 HOURS first time played. DTS-X was playing in a Demo. Excellent picture on my Panasonic plasma TV in 1080. Price was even good. Recommend this player from Crutchfield.

Pros: . Easy setup and good picture.

Cons: None

Solid player, solid value

Howard from Winston Salem, NC on 12/2/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

If you find today's anonymous-looking plastic boxes disheartening and, of course, want top-notch performance, this is the player to get. Some blu ray players weigh under two pounds; this weighs over six. And the mechanically-identical UBP-X1000ES comes with a three-year warranty, so you can tell they figure on this device holding up for a good while. The faceplate is just about featureless, but the textured metal case looks better in real life than in photos. Both video and audio performance are Oppo-level excellent, and the lack of a built-in display is no big deal, as long as you've got it connected to a screen. As for set-up, it's no deal-breaker, but it's not as transparent as it should be. For instance, it takes a lot of random hunting through sequences of screens to key in a different wifi password, and the manual seems to show that a little black square is the key to restoring factory defaults, without telling you what you actually need to do. Another quibble: the remote control is cheap and generic looking. But everything works well, and should continue to for years. Four and a half stars.

Pros: Mechanical integrity, performance

Cons: On-screen interface could be more thoughtful

Decided to replace my 2010 Blu-ray player. It is super easy to hook up and a lot quieter. I swear of the picture quality is better and I like the quick on. I decided to go with the heavier model and I'm glad I did, good looking and works well.

Pros: Easy to hook up.

I also played my first SACD disc and was surprised at the enhanced sound experience. It really is a very multipurpose piece of electronics with outstanding building quality and performance.

Pros: solid build, quiet operation, quickly accesses streaming services, excellent picture withe 4k content

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I haven't found anything that I don't like in this player! It has a great, clean look. I think it's a good value for the price. The mechanical parts could be a bit more robust, but with proper care, I think it will last quite well. The chassis size fits very nicely into my entertainment center and I prefer the nice square shape. Some of the competing products have a curve to them that makes them ungainly.

SURENDRA from Bellevue, WA on 11/14/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have always bought ALL of my electronics from Crutchfield for my most dearest HT system. Last year I bought SONY UBP-X800 and connected it to my 3-4 years told Marantz Receiver ( not 4K but upscale to 4K) , which in turn connects to SONY Projector VPLHW55ES ( not 4K). I am able to use the BD,DVD and SACDs without any issues, however streaming Netflix and Amazon prime movies have been a nightmare. I have to reset the player a number of times make it to work but then its no guarantee as it suddenly freezes and turns off. I was noticing this from the very beginning after purchase but thought it may be because of HDMI cable and other interference from other devise connected to the Marantz. I isolated and operate just the X800 player but of no avail, Has anyone experienced the same during streaming?

Pros: Excellent picture and BD 4K experience. Fantastic Audio with SACD and DSD.

Cons: Streaming woes. Freezing and suddenly turns off.

Total Improvement -- in the TOP

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

When I installed UBP-X800 - replacing BDP-S6500 -- I was astounded that three "downloads" took place. These "upgraded" the total picture quality on my 5 speaker system; they improved (and added to) the sound systems, AND connected to my internet system, which brings my computer to the Big screen! We tend to see discs from the Library -- and even the "oldies" have an improved picture. Now, mind you, I have a 55" 4K Sony TV -- and everything looks better and sounds better. I commend it to you

Great smart device for my 4k projector

Michael from Belmont, NC on 11/10/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I recently upgraded my projector to 4k and wanted a device to play 4k DVD's and stream 4k from apps such as Netflix and Amazon Prime. After researching my options, I decided this was my best option. It is a very well built unit and delivers all I need. Easy to setup and configure to my needs. I have cut the cord and also went with Directv Now, which Sony does not currently support the app. Needed to get a Roku 4k to support this.

Pros: Native 4k Easy to setup, configure, and use Great picture Smart device supporting 4k apps such as Netflix and Prime

Cons: No support for Directv Now app

Very nice player

MO from Charlotte, NC on 10/2/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Giving it 4 stars only because I have not used it very much. I recently added a 4k TV to my "man room" and wanted to have the ability to watch movies in my own domain while the wife is watching other stuff in the family room with the HT set up. Have listened to CD's, watched a movie, and used the built-in apps for YouTube music videos, and could not ask for more from anything at this price point. I could not justify another Cambridge, because of its limited use, but I am very satisfied with this player. Definitely recommended.

Pros: Very versatile player. Have used it for DVD, Blu-ray, and 4k playback and it works flawlessly. CD and online apps are very good as well. A great choice for a really good player at a reasonable price.

Cons: None so far.

Video signal issue when cabled connected via ARC

Ed from Roswell, GA on 9/5/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Got Sony UBP-X800 player in December 2017. Played CD's through my Denon AVR S720W without issues. Had an older TV at the time. Just got a new 4K HD Smart TV. Sadly the Sony player's video output is not seen by the TV via the TV's HDMI input with ARC and the setting of Full UHD color is enabled with the TV. The TV has settings for Full UHD "On" for all 5 HDMI inputs (including the HDMI input 1 with ARC functionality). Contacted Vizio tech support (55" P series TV). Went over settings galore. Upgraded cables. Still no worky. They kept saying (as a test) to try using another HD device on the HDMI ARC port not getting the video signal from the Sony. Got hold of a Samsung UBD-M8500 DVD HD Blu-Ray player, plugged it in and its signal was seen perfectly fine on the TV's HDMI port w/ ARC (#1) with Full UHD Color setting on. Contacted Sony custr service. After much back and forth, I procured on my own, same model Sony player. It presented the same fail on the HDMI port w/ ARC; when Full UHD color is set to on. Sony eventually informed me: "Our apologies for the inconvenience that this may have caused. In this case, a firmware update is scheduled to be released to resolve the issue. We cannot provide a specific date about this information but you can always check our website." So no ARC cabling for me with player. Using other port. More clunky interface as a result. Check right off for you that Full UHD color is good with your TV/DVD player - It was too late for me.

Pros: Plays audio CD's well.

Cons: Not playing nice with my TV on ARC. Sony says firmware fix coming at some undetermined time.

Love it!

Read the on site review of this unit and bought it. The review was spot on. The wife flipped through the manual and found she could run all her devices through its interface. It even has a red button for Netflix. Fast loading of disc's. First thing I did was pop in a Blu Ray of Avatar to see the upgrade to 4K on the new Samsung 65". Simply amazing. Joel from Upland, CA on 6/25/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This product is built to a standard of "first class". And it's performance is every bit as good as it's build quality. Picture and sound are both outstanding. Very simple in design and function, yet packed full of state-of-the-art technology. Fast disc loading. Very quiet machine, you can barely hear the disc spinning. Remote is nice and small and is very simple to operate. A sleek, solid performing unit. What more can you ask for! Spend the extra money and buy a quality product. I am amazed at what you get for only this amount of money.

Pros: Build quality. Simple and elegant design. Outstanding performance in both audio and video.

Cons: Does not support Dolby Vision. For those who want traditional, analog RCA outputs, there aren't any (but really, the HDMI provides a true digital output and your AVR or Preamp/Processor should have quality DACs on board).

X800 Sony Blu-ray review

Dale from St Petersburg, FL on 6/19/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have a owns several different Sony Blu-ray players when I purchase the X8OO series, I read reviews from high End Audio / video stereo magazines. Prior to receiving my purchase I am downloaded the manual and read that and review the specs. This product I would give an A+ to the sound quality is amazing, the picture quality is amazing. I do not have a 4K television however I know it will upscale my Blu-ray disc. At this point I am more concerned about the sound quality and since I select uncompress sound it knocked me off my feet. I wanted the Bluetooth headphone connection because I do watch films late at night. I live in an apartment so it's very important that my 3000 Watt stereo system does not come on at 2 o'clock in the morning. I upgraded all my HDMI cable's to version 2.2 so I get better fast speed transfer. I was not important or concerned about streaming on this unit as I have AppleTV and Roku ultra premium for streaming. If anyone is concerned whether this is a goodbuy or purchase, go for it you will not be disappointed I noticed that the model number is X 800/B. I read of a major issue in the original X 800 so I'm glad that I have the revised version of this model.

Pros: This product lives up to all the advertisement that Sony said

Cons: I wish there was a vegetable display in the front of the machine showing you the time and channels that are being used and what mode you were in. Without pressing display

Exceptional 4k posture quality.

Richard from Greenacres, FL on 5/22/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I love this new player. The picture is amazing, it's super easy to use, the remote is a huge improvement over my old one. It is obviously built like a tank so I have full confidence it will hold up for a long time. One issue I have is the audio outputs. I run a Martin Logan sound bar which has optical inputs. The Sony only has HDMI and coax outs. I have to get my sound through the TV HDMI connection. So much for hooking up surround sound. I'm inclined to think Sony and Martin Logan could have done better in their hookups.

Pros: Great picture, ease of use, fine remote.

Cons: Inadequate audio outs may not work with certain gear.

This is my 2nd player. The first one kept freezing up with blue screen or TV would say no signal or disc would not read. And the only way to restart it was to unplug it. Fun. Sony was no help , they just would read down a list and you could not understand them (non USA help). Crutchfield was great and quickly sent a replacement. Because of wonderful reviews just thought I got a lemon. Well my 2nd unit not much better, no blue screens but still freezes up constantly on what ever screen it is on. Fun again unplugging all the time, so I purchased a remote power outlet just for this unit. Research now on this player has a lot of unhappy Sony consumers with same problems. I would avoid purchase of this player. Guess the days of all Sony products being top notch are long gone IMHO.

Pros: Good picture when it works.

Cons: Full of bugs and a headache to use.

Purchased this to replace a less expensive Sony model. I read through reviews before deciding on this model. Its a simple setup and, as others have stated, very fast to load a disc. I am pleased with it so far and have no issue going it 5 stars. I have this running in an enclosed cabinet so I cant comment on noise. It is wide so be sure to measure your intended location carefully as the buttons are on the very edge of the face.

Bought this about two months ago and was working fine. Now I keep getting a Google 400 error that cannot be resolved when watching YouTube only. I'm going to try to return it and get something less troublesome.

Pros: Price seemed right but I'd pay more for a unit that can stream YouTube.

Cons: You-tube crash with no plution to 400 error made this purchase a big mistake.

Great 4K Blu Ray Player!

Gerald from Findlay, OH on 3/26/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This player is larger and heavier than anticipated...but that's a good thing! The 4K movies load fast and the picture is awesome. The player itself is an easy setup and apps can run through it as well. Paired this with a Sony 4K TV and the two work great together. Price, easy setup, and player reliability were points taken and the deciding factor to purchase.

Pros: Easy setup Ease of use Price

Excellent Ultra High Def Player

Rodney from TX on 3/25/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is very good ultra high def blu-ray player that met all my requirements such as build quality, sound, picture, cost, and aesthetics. Disk loading is fast and the disc drive itself is very quiet. Two HDMI out ports if you chose to go straight to TV and the other to an AVR. You have several options at your disposal in regard to it's upscaling capabilities, and boy they're quite good. Setup was a breeze, and you have the ability to update firmware for bug fixes and/or performance enhancements. Remote is pretty simple and button lay out is well positioned, but with my setup I use a harmony to control everything. The one puzzling thing about this player is Sony chose not to have a front panel readout display. It would have been nice to have the option of bright, dim or off setting for that. A detachable power cord would have been nice as well, but these are minor bites that really don't take anything from this being the best bang for buck player.

Pros: Build quality, Apps, Video and Sound features, and upscaling of non-4K sources

Cons: No front panel display on player

Over the years I can't count the number of VCR, DVD, and then Blue Ray players I've owned. The last two Blue Ray players were nothing but trouble even though major brands and not cheap ones. I have to say this Sony UBP-X800 is the best I've ever had. It has worked flawlessly and connected to my 4k TV with no troubles at all. The TV is not a Sony either. I would recommend this player to anyone, and the price is reasonable.

Easy setup. Boots up quickly. High-quality images regardless of media: old DVDs are upscaled to a pretty vivid images. Blu-ray movies look significantly improved and 4K movies are spectacular. I also have a number of Blu-Ray and DVD audio discs that sound great in five channels. I have not added speakers 6 and 7 for Atmos yet, but I expect those results to be equally impressive.

Pros: Easy setup, boots up quickly. High-quality picture

Cons: I'd rather the display be on the unit rather than the TV screen.

Wonderful balance between price and performance...

Paul from Hightstown, NJ on 2/24/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great performing player with solid build quality. It has more features than I will likely use but you never know. I am also OK without the optical output as I have an older Denon HT receiver with only one optical input (connected to my new OLED TV optical output). I use the HDMI connection which is perfect. Since I already have a quality CD changer I would only use the Sony as a secondary player, should my media not be compatible in the changer. For this purpose the digital output to my receiver is sufficient for audio only. Regarding the picture the up-scaling from conventional DVDs is great. I haven't had a chance to try any UHD Blu-rays yet but looking forward to it. As many reviews say this unit strikes a wonderful balance between price and performance.

Excellent Player. Looks great and appears to be very well put together. Remote is simple and efficient. It was purchased to experience 4K with new LG OLED and works well, I was really surprised at the level of upgrading it offers my regular Blue Ray Discs. Particularly the better quality Blu Rays (3:10 to Yuma, Dark Night, etc.) The detail and clarity is exceptional. Sound from the Bose Sound Bar seems cleaner and more defined as well. So far a great purchase at a very reasonable price.

Excellent with the Sony 900E display

Pat from Washington, VA on 2/4/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Extremely pleased with the Sony UBP-800. Would buy again. I also purchased the Sony UBP-X800 blu-ray player to drive the Sony 900E display. One of the things I struggled with was how to set them up so that I could get the best picture for older and lower resolution DVDs, i.e. which device was to do how much upscaling. I found a marked improvement if I let the X 800 player upscale to 1080p and let the TV do the upscaling from 1080p to 4K. So the 900E's HDMI format was set to "Enhanced format" on the HDMI 2 input connection and the X800's 4K upscaling was set to "Auto 1" for the HDMI out. (HDMI inputs 2 and 3 on the 900E apparently support the higher bandwidths required for 4K transfers from a player so they are the best choice even if you don't have any 4K disks yet.) What happens with Auto 1 when you are playing a DVD with lower resolution than 1080p (Have Gun Will Travel, e.g.) is that the X800 will upscale to 1080p before it outputs the HDMI signal. This means the 900E will do the upscaling from 1080p to 4K. This gave the best results from both devices and the over all best picture results. It's not surprising to me that the player would have the best algorithms for upscaling older DVDs. That would be one of its differentiators in its market place. By letting the player upscale to 1080p it also offloads processing from the 900E which is a good thing. It took me a lot of hours to get this all figured out so I hope others might f

Pros: Does an excellent job of upscaling to 1080p for the Sony 900E The 900E can take the image the rest of the way to 4K resolution.

Cons: No on-board display for tracks, etc.

Easy to connect (HDMI to TV & power cord). Quiet operation loading/opening/closing. Plays DVD's and CD's as advertised. Still working on all the "bells and whistles" of internet, etc. Bought it to pair Bluetooth with my new Bose Revolve+ portable speaker. Still haven't figured out how to do it without my TV/Bose soundbar being on. Always depended on Sony quality and believe I have another winner here. As others have noted, lack of display annoys me slightly. Need more than a tiny light to tell me what's happening.

Pros: Easy set up; quiet operation; great picture

Cons: No front display

Extreme pleased with this purchase. Received it double boxed and it arrived 1 day ahead of schedule. Hooked it up and went through the setup screens with NO ISSUES. It detected both of the wifi networks in the house and two of my adjacent neighbors too. Entered the password and it proceeded in telling me there way a firmware update and it downloaded and installed it very fast. It rebooted the player and all was well. The playback video quality is just great. I have no complaints. Razor sharp. No color issues. No motion issues. You Tube app looks good. Couldn't afford an Oppo, but this player is a close second. SACD audio decent, too. Very pleased with this purchase and Crutchfield.

Pros: Weight. Like the styling, simple. Easy, quick setup. Delivers better than expected results. Manual. Remote

Cons: Haven't found any issues that annoy me.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

1st 4K UHD BD player, and so far I am impressed. It is super fast to load and produces accurate color and beautiful images. This is replacing my PS4 as our player and I have long abandoned Samsung's video players. Got tired of them always buffering and skipping. This Sony player works awesome and integrates so well with our 930e TV. Don't use the apps, because we have an appletv 4K and if we want we would use the TV's apps. I actually appreciate the lack of a screen on the player. I don't want the distraction of the lights from the player right in my view. So glad I picked up this model. Would hope it received a Dolby Vision update but doubt it will. Other than that. Thumbs up.

Pros: Image quality. Minimalist approach. Fast loading.

Cons: No Dolby Vision.

Scott from Los Alamos, NM on 12/29/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It is odd how DVD and BluRay players have become worse over the years. I would expect them to be trouble free by now - how difficult can it be to play a disk after so many decades? Despite being high-end and made in 2017, the Sony UBP-X800 still suffers many of the problems I have had with various players over the last 10 years. For example, it won't play our "A Christmas Story" DVD, it had trouble updating over the internet despite claiming to be connected, its power-on/off combined with opening and closing of the tray is not what I would expect (taking a disk out and hitting the power button should result in the tray closing and the unit shutting down, but it doesn't). Despite all of that, I am giving it 4 stars because it is faster than many recent models I own, is flawless (as best I can tell so far) with 4K HDR, and has a lot of internet features.

Dave from Mobile, AL on 12/18/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For the past few months, I have been totally updating my audio/video system. The Sony UBP-X800 completes the puzzle.. Our components include a Sony XBR-55X930E television, Onkyo TXNR656 4k receiver, Roku 4k Ultra and Tivo Bolt 4k. (All components, with the exception of the DVD, are hardwired to our modem via ethernet cables. Set up took less than five (5) minutes as we had a bluray player already connected. Only connections needed were the HDMI cable and the power cord. If you have searched for lists of the best 4k DVD titles currently available, you will see that Planet Earth II is at the top of virtually every list. We waited until dark so the viewing room had minimal light and spaced our seating to distance recommended by Sony. Planet Earth II 4k was unlike anything we have ever seen! The detail, dynamic range and gamut of the picture were fantastic. We have been watching bluray movies that were upscaled by the Sony television and thought they were spectacular. Well, this Sony DVD put them to shame. Up next are the 4k anniversary editions of 'ET' and 'Close Encounters...' Now an added bonus. About 5 years ago, our SACD DVD died so I have been unable to play any of our CDs in that format. I loaded Pink Floyd's 'Dark Side of the Moon' and cranked up the volume. Sound began bouncing around all over the room. (If you have not heard SACD before, get this recording if you have a surround sound set up and send me a 'Thank you note.' Bot

Pros: Icing on the cake! Just be sure you have a 4k television capable of doing this player justice.

Cons: Really?

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Just connected the 4K player and found the unit to operate very smooth and quiet... This is the first of my six Sony players NOT to provide a digital readout on the front panel and certainly would have preferred the feature to have been included in the original design, even for a small up-charge... The remote is basic at best and I find myself often hitting the wrong buttons (An enhanced, illuminated remote is long over due in the Sony line.) That said, I'm quite pleased with the overall operation and responsiveness..!

Pros: Solid build and smooth operation at a fair price...

Cons: Basic remote and the unit lacks Dolby Vision support...

Only had this unit for about a week now. Great picture and controls are easy to understand/navigate on the remote. Having some minor issues with the Bluetooth connectivity and updating the software but I'm sure I just need to read through the literature to trouble shoot.

Pros: Picture and remote control. Nice that it syncs easily with other Sony products.

Cons: No fiber optic output for audio. Which is minor if you have a newer receiver as you can use the HDMI audio output. Older units can use the digital coaxial output. Also Bluetooth cannot find my iPhone but it might be an iPhone issue. Also, when updating the WiFi won't connext to the server even though it's connected to the WiFi and internet other apps such as Pandora.

Got this for the 4K features, but also for its SACD/DVD-Audio capabilities. Fifth day, tv said no source connected. Tried different input on receiver, same thing. Tried Roku in both inputs and all ok. Replaced brand new hdmi cables with older ones and got a picture and sound to tv, but now won't play the surround layer on SACD's. My old Sony UHP-H1 works perfectly but no 4K. Haven't really tested the unit,....... However my install is behind closed cabinet (No IR) and prefer single wifi remote for all AV functions. All my music library is via iTunes so best controller for system operation is Ipad/Iphone. Unfortunately in May 2017 Sony dropped its Apple support for their remote app "Sideview" due to competition from Apple in multiple venues. They still support their Android version but not apple. There is no timeline for a replacement and third party Apple apps that relied on Sideview protocols do not work anymore. Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Not perfect, but very close. And the nearly 50% price reductions make it a compelling choice. This is a nice full 17 inch wide component with some weight to it and solid build quality, except for the chintzy little USB cover. It loads and plays BD and DVD quickly and flawlessly. I only have a 1080P plasma, so no comment on 4K, UHD, HDR, etc. Network connections easy to set up and were fast but I cannot tell if it connected to my 2.4 or 5ghz wifi connections of a Netgear Orbi (both frequencies use the same SSID). The network app (DLNA-Like) that connects to other LAN devices seems inflexible. The standard Netflix, Amazon, Hulu apps all work well, load very fast. I had to upgrade firmware to get Atmos to work. Had one HDMI handshake issue. (I run thru a Denon Receiver) Forums told me to turn HDMI Deep Color off. No issues since then. I found it a delight to cast YouTube from a tablet to the Sony and Display...without any other devices such as Chromecast.

Pros: Solid build quality, Flawless BD Playback. Loads disks fast. Streaming connections are easy and fast. Retains 3d if important to you. Plays SACD and DVD-Audio as well.

Cons: No display on front of unit. IR window too far right and cabinet can get in way. Tray too far left and can hit cabinet door. Needs a better DLNA app.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is the second unit that I am reviewing as the first was a complete nightmare. Screen would go black then back on then off again repeatedly while trying to set it up. Called tech support and went through the usual diagnosis ( settings ,cables, etc.) Determined a possible HDMI port issue, and sent it back for a replacement. Received new one in short order and same issue just not as bad. The movies and apps play fine and do not black out or freeze just happens while on the home screen and in settings screen? Will keep it and hope it doesn't get worse or quit all together. Hooked up through a Onkyo 810 and ends at a Sony XBR-75X850E all via Mediabridge high speed HDMI cables.

Pros: Nice build (beefy)

Cons: Issues with HDMI ports (possible)

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had been looking for a 4K player to match up to my Samsung 4K TV and Denon receiver for a while but did not feel like spending a lot on a Denon Blu-ray player that didn't even support 4K content. I did the research and the Sony UBP-X800 caught my attention because of an unbeatable price/quality ratio! It was marked down which is excellent value for money and I put it on my wishlist, a couple of days later I got an even better offer in my email. Ultimately I think I got a steal! The player is awesome, after watching mainly on-line content and the odd Blu-ray via a Playstation 3 the difference in audio and video quality is stunning, even with regular Blu-ray disks. I have yet to receive some 4K DVD's I ordered and can't wait to see what they will look like! The player fits well with my receiver, looks very sleek and has many additional features build in. It plays my SACD's and Surround CD's without issue. The only point of criticism I have (and it is minor) is that there is no display on the player and it is impossible to tell whether it is on or off..

Pros: Design Audio Quality Video Quality Price

Cons: No display

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Was interested in the OPPO 203, but since I could never get over the price tag, I went out to a couple places to research another brand. A local retailer had the OPPO, and they had this Sony and an LG in their demo room. The OPPO picture quality compared to the others was really no better, but the Sony seemed more crisp, and the colors popped. I decided the Sony was it. Even though it did not have dolby vision, it did not concern me since there is so little content out there, and it will take quite a while before there is. The added bonus with the Sony is that it went on sale for black Friday, and it automatically became a no brain purchase.

Pros: Crisp picture colors pop off the screen sturdy build sound quality is great price vs. OPPO

Cons: none that I have come across. no front display, but that is minor for me

Everything I wanted in a DVD player at a great price

Sandy from St Petersburg, FL on 11/29/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Everything I wanted in a DVD player at a great price! For starters, it was an intuitive setup - I was able to leave the manual in its sealed package. Turned it on, and it led me through internet connection, connection with my Amazon Prime account, my Netflix account and recognized my Sonos products. I seen some opine that they miss information displayed on the front panel (nothing is displayed on the front panel). I can't imagine why - I like the clean appearance with less distracting lights emanating from the shelves that contain my audio/video components. I noticed that the manual (when I finally opened it to find out what some of the more esoteric switches were on the controller) indicated that a HDMI cable was included. If it was, I am still looking for it. I love the fact that by selecting the DVD player on my HDMI splitter, I have a one-stop for playing DVDs, Netflix and Amazon. Many other features which I have no need for at the moment. If you are looking for a fully featured DVD player at a reasonable price, this is a great choice.

Pros: Fully featured, The ability to play other services such as Netflix and Amazon directly from the DVD player, compact and sleek looking, great price for a fully featured player.

Cons: No HDMI cable included

I initially bought an Xbox One S since it also played 4K blu-rays. But using the controller as the remote turned out to be a bit of a hassle. Decided to try this Sony to replace a Pioneer Universal DVD player that was getting buggy. My new display does 4K so it seemed like a good time to upgrade. I also have a nice collection of SACD, DTS and DVD-A discs that still get played frequently. After adjusting several settings to get a more film like and less soap opera picture, the Sony has a very nice, plasma like picture. More important to me was the sound quality and I can say enthusiastically it sounds amazing. Highly recommended! PS; Kudos to Crutchfield for a price match a week after ordering, great customer service!

Pros: Color balance Picture quality Sound quality Plays SACD, DVD-A, DTS discs

I am also using Yamaha aventage RX-A2060 receiver and Epson Home cinema 5040UB 3D 4K Enhancement with HDR projector along with the Sony UBP-X800 Blu-ray player. The overall experience is outstanding. Great player at a great price

Brian from Albuquerque, NM on 9/9/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So far so good. I bought this as an eventual replacement for a Oppo 93, and it has handled everything I have thrown at it, and that includes 4K (converted to 1080p/SDR), BluRay, DVD (upscaling is as good if not better than the Oppo 93), DVD-A, SACD, CD, and even the Dolby Atmos demos on a USB drive. I would not say the build quality is in the same league as an Oppo, but it is also less than 1/2 the cost. As an example, the tray button has a somewhat flimsy feel to it, and for that reason it is actually possible to double press it causing the tray to open, and immediately reverse.

Pros: Reasonable price for a full universal player with 4K support. Plays virtually all video and audio formats known to man. Top notch performance.

Cons: Build quality reflects the low price. No analog connections. No front panel display.

Perfect Solution!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After reading up on the Sony UBP-X800 I decided to take the plunge... knowing that I could totally rely on both Crutchfield and Sony to offer a quality product that would meet my needs. My reason for upgrading from our current older Sony Blu-Ray player was to enable more flexibility in terms of the various types of files that can be played on this unit. For example, besides standard Blu-Rays, DVD's and AVCHD video files that we have, I was looking for something that would play the 1080p videos we shoot with our iPhones (after saving/burning them to a DVD disc. (frees-up memory on the phone). This X800 does the job -- plays .mov, .m4v, etc. files, and the videos look awesome even on our older Sony XBR. The final benefit of this unit will come in the future, when we upgrade our TV to a 4K unit. Looking forward to that!

Pros: Almost unlimited number of files/video sources that this can play.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Excellent 4K/3D blu ray player/wifi at this price point. Solidly built, a nice improvement over previous Sony blu ray players. Very happy with THE PURCHASE and the unit itself. Sony customer service, on the other hand, is quite a mess. The promotion, that Sony initiated for the purchase of this product, of 2 free 4K blu ray discs for registering the product with Sony went less than smoothly, to put it politely. After receiving the player and registering, I was sent an email from Sony thanking me for registering, and to expect an email in 2-4 business days with a "code" to redeem for the 2 discs. That email never came. I won't get into the long and exasperating story with Sony customer service on this matter, suffice to say that after two months, and numerous contacts with them, by phone and email, I was finally able to receive and redeem the code for the discs. I know they were free, but really, if you're going to promote a product in this way, your customers shouldn't have to "jump through hoops" to receive the promised item(s). Sony customer service could learn a thing or two from the Crutchfield team.

Pros: Dealing with Crutchfield customer service

Cons: Dealing with Sony customer service

Great player, disappointing streaming

Chris from Rockledge, FL on 5/1/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very happy with the performance as a player. 4K playback is great. The second HDMI output allows using my older non-4K receiver by assigning it to audio out in settings. Upscale of 1080p Blu-ray to 4k is also excellent. I'd love to give it 5 stars, but there is too little app support at this time. What's the point of having great wireless capability (dual) and only having a couple of useful apps? Not only that, but there appears to be no way to download apps. Hopefully Sony will do an update that will either add apps or the capability to download new apps. If you're only looking for a 4K Blu-ray player this is a great choice, but expect to use another device for your streaming needs.

Pros: 4K Blu-ray performance is the best I've seen 1080p Blu-ray upscale is excellent Two HDMI outputs to allow audio going to receiver while 4k goes to TV

Cons: Poor app support

I've been waiting for this unit to come out for some time now. Having recently picked up 55" 4K Sony TV, I wanted to add a UHD player to show it off and I was waiting for Sony's entry. I am glad I did! The video and audio quality is top notch. I was blown away by the crystal clear image, the rich HDR color palette and the absolutely fantastic range in the audio. Quite simply, the biggest upgrade I've ever made as far as a media player goes. I highly recommend the X800.

Pros: [---Speed---] Loading of 4k movies is fast. Even when navigating and using the included apps, it is fairly snappy. [---WiFi---] This uses a WiFi card with MIMO and maxed out my connection. Crutchfield Backs Up Their Sales Guarantee

Bob from Titusville, FL on 4/5/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is probably a review about Crutchfield rather than my new Sony. My Crutchfield rep recommended it would be worth my wait until this new unit becomes available instead of buying a cheaper brand. As soon as this Sony was stocked they immediately shipped the unit to me. While going through the quick set up, it appeared to load slowly with some freezing up of the firmware update through an ethernet connection. Eventually I inserted a DVD. It took almost 15 minutes to load. Then suddenly quit. Received a default saying it couldn't read a SONY 4K dvd. After a couple of more hours of fighting with this I contacted Crutchfield support. Ottis agreed that I might have a defective unit which is a rarity for this unit. He immediately rushed out a new player to me (no charges) that I received in less than two days. Set up the new DVD player and everything was perfect. Now enjoying this great addition to my 75" Sony, Yamaha amp with my Bose system. Fantastic picture with incredible audio. Contacted Crutchfield with the good news. They emailed me a prepaid UPS label for the defective player. On a side note, I originally chose the power saver mode. Later changed it to a standby mode. This enabled the DVD's to load much quicker and the apps were immediately available for use. 5 Stars to Crutchfield and 5 to the SonyUBP-X800

Pros: Too many to list. Most already mentioned on prior reviews.

Cons: Turning off power mode during set up will cause the player to slow during startup.

Outstanding audio and video quality

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This 4K bluray player has a better sound and video quality than my other Samsung 8500 that I have in my bedroom. Specially with Atmos and HDR 4 k movies. The remote is a standard size not like the tiny toy like remote of the Samsung. The 4K movies load faster than the Samsung. The only thing for me that the Samsung is significantly better than this Sony is the amount of apps like YouTube where you can watch one of the most vivid 4K videos in the web. I hope Sony will add more apps to its player so we can only use one device instead of also needing an additional streaming device like a 4K Roku or fireTV.

Pros: Excellent audio sound with Atmos, great HDR for some 4k bluray, solid frame

Cons: Lack of YouTube app, no HDR for Amazon Prime videos,

Better than expected

Totally awesome! Well built, solid construction, feels like quality at first contact. Super easy to connect and set-up. Awe inspiring 4K images and super quality 3D playback. Netflix and VUDU look even better than direct connection to my TV. Can't ask for anything more. Sony even sweetened the pot by including two free movies, which arrived only 3 days after my choice was made. Thanks, SONY! Of course, the purchase through Crutchfield was truly painless. It's a joy to deal with a professional company with such an emphasis on customer service! Thanks, Crutchfield.

Pros: Quality throughout.

Cons: None that I've found yet.

Solid Player - Delivers a stellar picture very quietly

Craig from Sunnyvale, CA on 3/29/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Sony X800 has proved to be a very satisfying purchase. It is cheaper in price than some of its most noted rivals but seems to match them in terms of picture quality. There are cheaper UHD players but from what I read they do not produce the Sony's picture quality. The player is very heavy and gives the impression of being extremely well built. This is backed up by how silent it is while playing a disc. There are only a few apps on this player at the moment, Netflx and Amazon being the most prominent names. Keep in mind that this is a very new player and as firmware updates come there will probably be more to come. The performance on Netflix is very snappy and better than on my TV which is also a Sony. Also keep in mind that this player features HDR 10 but does not have Dolby Vision. DV is new and may possibly be added later but that is in no way a promise from Sony. So, if you are in the market for an affordable UHD player this one should be on your short list.

Pros: Solid build Great picture quality Plays a huge number of disc types including exotic audio formats Extremely quiet Affordable compared to other players in the same class of performance

Cons: Very few apps No Dolby Vision

Great 4K player

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This Sony is replacing an older OPPO Blu ray player that was fantastic in both picture and sound. Having upgraded to 4K I needed to replace the OPPO. Having done my extensive research as to the limited selection of 4K Blu ray players and considering the new OPPO 4K, which was too pricey, I decided to wait for the Sony. All I can say is WOW. The picture and sound is even better than the OPPO. I was not concerned about the Apps the Sony has, as I use both a 4K Roku and Fire TV for streaming. I am impressed with the build quality, picture, sound, ease of set-up and menu to customize to your situation. I really like this Sony, as it makes regular Blu ray's look like they are 4K.

Pros: Everything

Cons: None so far

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

i was surprised at how big this was. The other years are smaller and smaller. i like it back to normal size like this. I do wish it had a display on the front for time, etc, i like that stuff. It is a very solid player. I only had to use one HDMI cable, as my receiver has the 2.2 pass through. It looks amazing when playing and the sound is great. I only saw a couple of apps in it, youtube, and opera i think. its not giving me any other to pick from. not sure if there will be more later or thats it. They are supposed to play in 4K, so maybe waiting for others to come out in 4K. This was worth the money though. So far, so good. Sony even sent me 2 free ultra discs after buying this, info is on the box and i got then in less than a week. not a big selection, but better than nothing.

Pros: Clear picture, great sound

Cons: only a couple of apps with the machine, but not a big deal.

Great choice.

INSTALLED EASY, SET-UP EASY, WORKS PERFECT.

Pros: Replaced a Samsung unit that refused to load a Blu-Ray disc after about a year of use (just long enough to run out of warranty). Hope this one does better.

Cons: None so far.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great picture quality for 4k blu ray disks, awesome sound with ATMOS. But such a POOR collection of 4K apps. No HDR for Amazon, no 4K for Vudu, and no apps for Hulu, HBO, Showtime, etc. Why? It has such great potential to be the ONLY box needed to be attached to the TV, but just a dumb blu-ray player without app support.

Pros: + Great picture quality for 4k blu ray disks + Awesome sound with ATMOS + Fast

Cons: - Lacking in streaming support - poor collection of 4K apps. - No HDR for Amazon - No 4K for Vudu - No apps for Hulu, HBO, Showtime, etc.

The location of IR remote sensor in the instruction manual is incorrect. It is in the upper right side of of front panel. This information is for people using a Blaster. Video and audio output in 4K and standard blu-ray DVD's is worth the price. Setup is easy to follow. Netflix button on remote is a great feature and easy to navigate. My installation is all hard wired.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The pros are the picture quality and the sound decoding is great. Net flex is HD plus 5.1 sound. I am using a Epson projector which can handle 1080P only. So here is the down side, after spending several hours on the phone with Sony reps, yes several, the conclusion was that you cannot add any opts other than the four that came with the program in the player. The software will be updated at a future date, but a date was not given. Also as everyone knows that Blu-ray movies are not in 16:9 ratio so you have a letter box. For thee hundred dollars, the player is worth it ,but not a penny more and the pitfalls of Blu-ray are many as I cannot use the full 120 inches of my screen to watch a movie. Note, all 4K TV's are 16:9 ratio..

Pros: Picture and sound quality are great.

Cons: No apts. available or than the four that came with the software.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I originally purchased another player which was on sale for $30 off. As they say penny wise, pound foolish! The Samsung had terrible instructions and it often would not turn on without switching it on and off several times. I should have known better. All my other equipment is Sony which I have never had any real problems. But Crutchfield's return policy allowed me to return that piece of junk and get equivalent Sony in one day. The sales people were tremendously helpful and I now have the Sony player, with excellent instructions, intuitive operation, easy to turn on, and outstanding picture quality.

Pros: east of operation excellent instruction booklet

Cons: None that I've seen

Disc & USB Compatibility

Disc Compatibility: The Sony UBP-X800 Blu-ray disc player is compatible with many disc types:

Disc Type Disc Description
Blu-ray UHD BD-ROM, BD-ROM, BD-3D, BD-R, BD-RE
DVD DVD-Video, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-Audio
CD CD-Audio, CD-R, CD-RW, SACD

Ultra HD Blu-Ray: Ultra HD Blu-ray provides these key features and advantages over standard Blu-ray.

  • 4K Resolution: Ultra HD Blu-ray supports resolutions of up to 3840 x 2160 pixels. That's 4x as many pixels as Full HD televisions, and 27x as many pixels as Standard Definition televisions
  • Wider Color Gamut: Ultra HD Blu-ray can display over 75% of the visible color spectrum; this is known as "Wider Color Gamut". That's more than twice the color range of current HDTVs.
  • HDR (High Dynamic Range): Ultra HD Blu-ray also supports High Dynamic Range (HDR) video. Dynamic range is the difference between the brightest whites and the darkest blacks on screen. HDR means that scenes with high contrast can be shown with much greater clarity and detail.
  • Smooth, Realistic Motion: Ultra HD Blu-ray supports progressive frame rates of 24, 25, 50 and 60 frames a second, enabling smoother, more realistic motion.
  • Greater Capacity & Speed: Ultra HD Blu-ray Discs will be available in a dual layer 66 gigabyte disc and a triple layer 100 gigabyte disc. Ultra HD Blu-ray can stream video up to a maximum of 108/128 Mbps for 66Gb and 100Gb discs.
  • Backward Compatible: Ultra HD Blu-ray players will play all current Blu-ray Disc & DVD content. When connected to a current HDTV television, the player will output a standard HDTV signal. Ultra HD Blu-ray players will support existing Blu-ray media, as well as provide down conversion and HDR to SDR conversion functionality to match the connected television's capabilities.

Note: Like standard BD, Ultra HD Blu-ray discs use region codes. The region code on your disc must match the region code on your player, otherwise the disc will not play. This Blu-ray player is region A and DVD region 1. Blu-ray Disc uses the Advanced Access Content System (AACS) to prevent unauthorized recording of copyrighted material.

USB Port:  The front-panel USB (type-A) port allows you to play photo, videos, and music files on a connected USB device. The player can recognize Mass Storage Class (MSC) Devices that are FAT-compatible and Still Image Capture Devices (SICD) class devices. The player can recognize up to 500 folders/files. The USB port also allows you to enjoy additional content (such as BonusView) on certain Blu-ray Disc titles. Some BD-ROMs have bonus content and other data which can be downloaded to an inserted USB Flash Drive (minimum 1 GB recommended, sold separately).

Compatible Audio/Video/Photo Formats: The Sony UHD Blu-ray disc player supports playback of the following audio/video/photo files recorded on BD-R/RE, DVD+R/RW, DVD-R/RW, and CD-R/RW discs; plus compatible USB memory devices.

Media Format File Type
Audio High Resolution:  AIFF /ALAC /FLAC / WAV (up to 24-bit/192kHz); DSD (2.8/5.8MHz)
Compressed: MP3 / WMA / AAC (up to 48kHz/320kbps)
Video AVCHD, AVI, FLV, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, Motion JPEG, MKV, WMV9, XVID
Photo JPEG, GIF, PNG, BMP, MPO, WEBP

Direct Stream Digital (DSD): Enjoy studio-quality sound thanks to the Direct Stream Digital (DSD) audio codec; designed specifically for High-Resolution Audio. This 1-bit format utilizes a stream of very high frequency 1s and 0s to recreate audio waveforms at a higher resolution than conventional codecs. The result is clearer, crisper, High-Resolution Audio quality. The UHD Blu-ray player supports DSD 5.6MHz decoding thru BD, DVD, CD, USB, and DLNA.

Video Section

HDMI 2.0a Output + HDMI Audio Only Output: The Sony UHD Blu-ray player is equipped with dual HDMI outputs for separating audio and video signals (the HDMI Out 2 does not output video signal). The HDMI Out 1 can be used to carry both digital video and audio all in one cable, plus it supports the latest HDMI 2.0a spec. You can choose to use the HDMI Out 2 to send audio only to your A/V receiver and the HDMI Out 1 to send only video to your Ultra-HD TV. The HDMI output resolution can be set to 480p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p, or 4K.

Note: Use a premium high-speed HDMI cable with 18 Gbps and above to view 4K and HDR content optimally.

Ultra HD 4K Playback & Upscaling: With stunning UHD 4K, Sony's Ultra HD Blu-ray Player gives you 4x the resolution of full 1080p HD and boasts incredibly life-like images with a level of detail and clarity like never before. You can even upscale your favorite non-4K video content and enjoy it in 4K Ultra-HD (3,840 x 2,160) with this UHD Blu-ray Player and your Ultra HD TV.

Note: To enjoy 4K, you must have a compatible 4K television connected to the UHD Blu-ray player via HDMI.

HDR (High Dynamic Range) Video: With HDR (High Dynamic Range) technology, the Ultra HD Blu-ray Player delivers dynamic UHD content in exceptional quality with a greater range of color contrast and brightness, enhancing details from the original film format. Experience sharp contrasts and brightness with deeper blacks and brighter whites. HDR video signals contain up to 100x the brightness of a standard (SDR) signal, massively increasing peak brightness while retaining deep and highly detailed blacks, for an incredible viewing experience.

  • Compatible HDR Formats: This Ultra HD Blu-ray player supports HDR 10, but does not support Dolby Vision HDR.
  • HDR-to-SDR Conversion: When playing 4K HDR content on a 4K SDR television, the UBP-X800 utilizes a unique Sony algorithm to reproduce the proper brightness and color gradations to provide the best picture possible.

BT.2020 Color Spaces: Support for the new BT.2020 color spaces means access to a much wider range of colors than conventional TV signals offer. This ultra-wide color space means content creators can deliver much more saturated and realistic color from deep aquatic blues to natural greens and vibrant reds.

Deep Color: The Sony Blu-ray player supports a color depth of up to 12 bits. Connecting the player and a TV that supports Deep Color via HDMI allows more accurate color reproduction than when connecting it to a TV that does not support Deep Color.

3D-Ready: The Sony UBP-X800 lets you enjoy 3D Blu-ray disc movies in full HD 1080p. 3D viewing requires compatible 3D content, 3D-ready HDTV, 3D emitter and glasses, and a high-speed HDMI cable (supporting at least 10.2 Gbps) connection.

Screen Settings: The Sony UBP-X800 Ultra-HD Blu-ray player features the following screen settings:

  • TV Type: You can select a 16:9 or 4:3 aspect ratio for the unit's video output to match your connected Television's screen aspect ratio.
  • Screen Size: For 3D viewing, you will need to set the screen size of your 3D-compatible TV.
  • Screen Format: You can select the display configuration for a 4:3 screen picture on a 16:9 wide screen television. You can choose Full or Normal (select when connected to a TV with a wide mode function; displays a 4:3 screen picture in 16:9 aspect ratio even on a wide-screen TV) or Normal (changes the picture size to fit the screen size with the original picture aspect ratio).
  • DVD Aspect Ratio: You can select the display configuration for playback of 16:9 screen pictures on a 4:3 screen TV. You can select from Letter Box or Pan & Scan.

Video Settings: The Sony UBP-X800 Ultra-HD Blu-ray player offers the following video adjustments:

  • Picture Quality Mode: You can select from 3 preset pictures settings (Direct, Brighter, Theater, Auto, or Custom) for different lighting environment. The Custom mode lets you adjust the contrast, brightness, color, and hue manually.
  • Noise Reduction: BNR reduces the mosaic-like block noise in the picture, MNR reduces minor noise around the picture outlines (mosquito noise), and FNR reduces the random noise appearing in a picture, while IP Content Noise Reduction enhances low-resolution web videos.

24p Output: Movies are typically recorded on film with a frame rate of 24 frames per second. When a movie is transferred to Blu-ray Disc at 24 frames per second the UBP-X800 will output that signal to the TV (if the TV will accept the 1080p/24 format) with no need for conversion.

Cinema Conversion Mode: The Sony Ultra-HD Blu-ray player offers two Cinema Conversion Modes - (1) Auto mode automatically detects whether the material is video-based or film-based, and switches to the appropriate conversion method. (2) The Video mode is suited for video-based material and will always be selected regardless of the content.

BonusView: The BonusView feature provides picture-in-picture capability with select Blu-ray Disc titles. You can view addition content (such as director/actor commentary) in a small display window while the movie is playing.

Rigid Chassis: The UBP-X800's unique frame-and-beam chassis offers a rigid structure to eliminate micro-vibrations, as well as effective electrical shielding, so all you experience is the highest sound and picture quality.

Audio Section

Surround Sound Decoders: The Sony UBP-X800 UHD Blu-ray player has built-in Dolby Digital and DTS surround processors with support for Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD High Resolution, and DTS-HD Master Audio. Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, and DTS-HD are only output via the player's HDMI output.

  • Dolby Digital Plus: Dolby Digital Plus was developed as an extension to Dolby Digital. The audio coding technology supports 7.1 channel surround sound. Dolby Digital Plus also includes the standard Dolby Digital bit stream and is compatible with all current Dolby Digital processors using the coaxial digital output.
  • Dolby TrueHD: Dolby TrueHD is a lossless coding technology that supports up to 8 channels of multi-channel surround sound for the next generation optical discs. The reproduced sound is true to the original source bit-for-bit.
  • DTS-HD High Resolution Audio: DTS-HD High Resolution Audio supports a maximum sampling frequency of 96 kHz, and 7.1 multi-channel surround. DTS-HD High Resolution Audio has a maximum transmission rate of 6 Mbps, with a lossy compression.

Note: If you have an AV receiver which decodes Dolby Atmos or DTS:X, you will need to set this UHD Blu-ray player's HDMI output to bitstream. It also streams Dolby Atmos movies from built-in apps (service and movie most support Dolby Atmos).

Coaxial Digital Output: In addition to HDMI connectivity, the Sony UBP-X800 is equipped with a coaxial (RCA) digital output. The Audio menu allows you to select the digital audio format that is passed through the coaxial digital output. Settings allow you to transfer Dolby Digital and/or DTS sound tracks, or down-mix surround bitstreams to 2-channel PCM audio.

Note: This player is not equipped with any analog audio outputs.

Bluetooth Audio Transmission: The Sony UBP-X800 features built-in Bluetooth 4.1 with support for A2DP 1.2 and AVRCP 1.3. The UBP-X800 can even send audio to your TV via HDMI and to a wireless speaker or headphone over Bluetooth at the same time. In addition to support for the standard SBC Bluetooth codec, the UBP-X800 supports Apple's AAC codec and Sony's LDAC codec. With LDAC technology you can stream without compromising on quality, up to 3x the bandwidth of regular Bluetooth.

Note: The Sony UBP-X800 does not support Bluetooth hands-free phone communication (HFP).

SongPal Link & App: Download the SongPal app onto your Apple (iOS 9.0+) iPod/iPhone/iPad or Android (OS 4.4+) smartphone/tablet and enjoy multi-room audio streaming and functionality between your SongPal Link compatible Sony devices, over your home's WiFi network. We need to replace our defective Samsung HT-J5500W HTS Samsung wouldn't repair because we bought it from an ebay merchant and need to replace it with a unit that has 3D capability along with 4K and we need to buy it from a company known for actually supporting their customers. Crutchfield was also very quick to respond to a few e-mails I sent with questions. The only problem was I added the SquareTrade warranty to my order only to have it removed by the system for some unknown reason. [ Peter  Nov 10, 2018 ]
It covers everything. Super Audio CDs, DVD Audio, Blu Ray, 4k, etc. It doesn't have Dolby Vision but my TV doesn't either. And Its built like a premium player should be. [ John  Nov 06, 2018 ]

I chose this to replace an older, but still quite nice, Pioneer DVD/SACD player. I wanted to add BluRay and 4K to this system even though I do not yet have a 4K display. I bought this Sony model based on reviews and the solid chassis' construction. I believe in less vibration! [ Earl Dunbar  Sep 29, 2018 ]

This unit was suggested to me by another audio store I've done business with over the years as what they currently recommend now that Oppo has discontinued making Blu-ray players. I have an Oppo that was damaged by a power surge. Also, Tim was helpful in answering my questions about this Sony unit. and I have had good experiences with Crutchfield in the past. [ J.O.  Aug 20, 2018 ]

Tried Samsung 9500 first from another vendor with no technical support. Picture was incredible but no sound. Then picture started freezing. Back it went to vendor. Sony dvd will match Sony tv so hoping this new purchase will work better. Deciding factor to use Crutchfield was ability to get technical support! [ Thomas  Jul 18, 2018 ]
Because of your review section. [ M. Keith  Jul 14, 2018 ]

I bought this to go with my xbr-75x940e that I bought from you. You told me that my SU-WL810 L that I previously bought from you would work, it doesn't. Y'all are a good company. Just be sure about the info. The xbr-75x940e replaced an xbr-75x940D that I bought from you. [ JESSE  Apr 01, 2018 ]
We feel the 4K players are only get better in a year or two, so we didn't want to invest in an Oppo yet. Plus we already own a regular Blu-ray Oppo. The other 4K's did not have features that were important - only the Sony and Oppo have those. [ Tim  Mar 30, 2018 ]
The choice was originally the Oppo UDP-203, but the Sony had almost identical specs ad features that I would use. The streaming aspect was not of interest on either unit as I already have a Roku Stick. Obviously, the build quality and the ability to do a lot of fine tuning on the Oppo make it a standout, but for the features I would like and the tremendous cost difference, the Sony became my final choice. I do have Oppo headphones, though (no, not the thousand dollar ones). [ Dean  Mar 27, 2018 ]

Chose this unit on sale for my Samsung 65" KS8000 4k TV I purchased a year ago based upon my research. Wanted the 2 HDMI outputs -- one for video and one for my Bose Audio. Wanted Dolby Vision but not for the much higher price. Bought from Crutchfield because of their 60 day return policy, and their support. Also very good online product info and advise. [ Jim  Dec 29, 2017 ]
Recommendation by CS and confirmed my research. [ Arthur  Dec 28, 2017 ]
Seemed like a logical alternative to buying OPPO given that Dolby Vision is not quite a reality in the players yet except OPPO which is too expensive. The standards change so often I wont buy the expensive equipment. I looked at the Panasonics and would have bought the DMP-UB300 or UB400 but it appeared to be exclusive to Europe. There must be some reason for that. [ Mike  Dec 25, 2017 ]
Great product line. Never had a problem with Sony. 4k compatible. [ Nels  Dec 25, 2017 ]
4K [ John  Dec 23, 2017 ]
Great price on only BT-enabled 4k BRP [ PAUL  Dec 23, 2017 ]
Because i rarely use a DVD player and didn't want to spring for an Oppo even though i'm building an audiophile system with an OLED TV. [ JESSE  Dec 22, 2017 ]
I purchased from Crutchfield a Sony 4K TV and now I need a 4K player, of course. [ Joseph  Dec 22, 2017 ]
Solid SONY construction, reasonably future-proof, full featured, very competitive price and excellent Crutchfield service as always. [ JT  Dec 22, 2017 ]

I like Sony products and I am ready to buy a 4k TV. I have narrowed my search to the Sony 55 inch 930 or the LG 55 OLED C7P. [ Thomas J.  Dec 19, 2017 ]
I have always had good luck with Sony products. [ Michael  Dec 16, 2017 ]
Best unit I thought I could afford. Its well built and will give dependable good use and not break the bank.. Sure there are cheaper but with 100 off discount sure made me think.. Allison verified my questions and there really were no other comparable units for the price.. [ Raymond  Dec 16, 2017 ]

Needed a quality 4k DVD player. [ JOSEPH  Dec 05, 2017 ]
I love 3D but it is getting more difficult to find current content. Now that 4K disks are available I wanted a player that could do both, and being able to enjoy DTS:X sound will complete my home theater experience - for now. I've had good experience with other Sony products, and the price was right. [ HANK  Dec 05, 2017 ]

I wanted a quality player that could showcase the capabilities of 4K and HDR. The two contenders were this Sony and the LG UP970, but after reading reviews and hearing about the disc noise heard in some LG players and slightly better upscaling (subjective) available with the Sony I decided to go with the Sony. I've always had fairly good experiences with Sony products, and this appears to be a good unit with good performance and features. I'm replacing an older Blu-Ray from another manufacturer that has always been somewhat erratic and seems worse lately. [ David  Nov 19, 2017 ]
reviews are very positive and i saw a blue ray disc playing on the sony tv just purchased and was impressed with the quality. [ Jorge  Nov 18, 2017 ]
Read that it has superior features and Video Resolution compared to other units. I own a Samsung MU9500 and it is lacking a lot of features from the KU9500 I had before it. I like that the Sony unit has SACD capability also. Should match up well with my Sony XBR65X900E TV. [ DAVID  Nov 17, 2017 ]

I've been looking to replace a Pioneer DVD, SACD combi player for quite some time. Having just purchased a UHD Vizio display it just made since to upgrade the source. I've been a very long-time Crutchfield customer and have always respected their product offerings as being reliable. I appreciate their great service as well. Lastly, based on Adam's input and my reading-up on this Blu-Ray player, I felt it would be versatile enough to meet our present and future needs.... for when we buy a 4K TV down the road. [ Karl  Aug 23, 2017 ]
It is the lowest priced, true universal player (UHD, BR, DVD, SACD, DVD-A) available, and the user reviews at sites like AVS Forum are pretty solid. I do not yet own a UHD TV, and I hope my Panasonic plasma lasts for at least another 5 years, but I recently upgraded to an Anthem AVR with Atmos support, and it seems that to get Atmos, one must buy UHD discs; standard 1080P BluRays often do not include Atmos. The player can downscale to 1080P, so I will be good to go today, and tomorrow. [ BRIAN  Aug 23, 2017 ]

Sony supporter for 30+yrs. so I have some trust in their products & very pleased with this one as well with the exception of no display but understand why. [ baron  May 01, 2017 ]
I have a Sony Blu-Ray player that has performed very well until just recently. The reviews I saw on your website of this Sony player range from very good to spectacular and I was impressed. The remote control also factors in because Sony has large well-spaced buttons on its remote. Most of the Blu-Ray players I seen have small remotes with very tiny buttons. It is very difficult to avoid pressing two or three buttons at the same time on other manufacturers remotes. [ Brian  Apr 19, 2017 ]

Review of the Sony UBP-X800 in the latest Curthfield mailer. I have also had Sony products in the past, (DVD, CD, BD players, TV's and A/V receivers), and have always been happy. Looking to start a whole new set-up and this is my first component. [ Christopher J.  Mar 19, 2017 ]

I've been waiting for this model to come out. Sony always makes solid DVD player - I still have their original Model DSP-7000 - so I expect this to be great as well. [ V  Mar 16, 2017 ]
In stock, extended warranty available. Bought my truck radio from you also. Good copany [ PAUL  Mar 16, 2017 ]
Out of the few UHD 4K HDR players available, this Sony was the most versatile, playing my DVD-A, SACD, CD, DVD formats as well as the 4K Blu-ray, all at an affordable price. I've been waiting for the release and to see who would get it first. Crutchfield pulled no punches, not promising it before the release date, but told me when it would be available (today), then followed through. Thanks. [ David  Mar 15, 2017 ]

The X700 now supports Dolby Vision. The firmware was released last month. I bought two X700 models in the last half of June and both players shipped with Dolby Vision out of the box, and another firmware update was installed after I set them up. I initially purchased the X800 thinking it was a better player, but when I realized it did not support Dolby Vision, I exchanged it for the X700. I contacted Sony and they have no plans to add Dolby Vision to the X800, likely because the hardware in the X800 cannot support it. [ Peter  Jul 16, 2018 ]
I played the latest STAR WARS movie this weekend, which is in Dolby Vision, and it played fine. [ Lenton  Apr 16, 2018 ]
I have an atmos setup and everything runs through a yamaha av. I believe that the sony does decode vision. When I have played the latest dvds with HDR and 4k with atmos it works fine. [ Nathan  Apr 04, 2018 ]
From what I'm hearing, no. [ PAUL  Apr 02, 2018 ]
This is a much wanted feature but probably not going to happen. [ Craig  Apr 02, 2018 ]
No, it will never get Dolby Vision, it doesn't have the right chipset to support it. If you need Dolby Vision the X700 is one way to go although it has yet to receive that update. [ Havens  Apr 02, 2018 ]

no it can not record at all [ ROBERT W  Dec 31, 2017 ]
Not sure if I quite understand the question but this Blu-ray player does not have the ability to record that being said you can watch a Blu-ray while your cable box is recording [ michael  Dec 31, 2017 ]
No. This has no recording ability. It is only a player. [ Vinod  Dec 31, 2017 ]
This is a "player" not a recorder. [ David  Dec 31, 2017 ]
It will display this on the tv screen while playing a music CD of file. [ Lenton  Dec 22, 2017 ]
There is no display of any kind on this player. Everything is monitored on your attached television/projector. The led on the front only lights when the unit is powered on. When off there are no lights. [ David  Dec 21, 2017 ]
on this sony model, there is no front panel display for track number, time, etc [ JAMES R  Dec 21, 2017 ]
No, there is no front display on this unit. [ Havens  Dec 21, 2017 ]
No, the Sony UBP-X800 player does not display metadata for music CDs, although it does play all formats including MP3, DVD-Audio, and SACD. Thus, you have to refer to the track list on the CD. I turn my TV off when playing CDs via this player. The sound quality is excellent and on par with more expensive universal UHD 4K Blu-ray players. [ DAVE  Dec 21, 2017 ]
The remote controller is IR only. [ Shane  Dec 15, 2017 ]

No. This player will operate with a 1080p HDTV. DVDs are up scaled to 1080. [ Lenton  Nov 14, 2017 ]
No, but you will need a 4K TV and hi-speed UHD HDMI cable to play 4K UHD Blu-ray discs. [ DAVE  Nov 14, 2017 ]
No, it will play regular DVD's on an HDTV set, but you will need a 4K TV and 4K DVD's to take advantage of the player's full capabilities. [ William  Nov 13, 2017 ]
This player has 4K output, so to fully appreciate it you would need a 4K capable TV. The player does play DVD and BluRay as well. [ Robert  Nov 13, 2017 ]
no you do not need a 4k tv to play DVDs on the UBPX800. in the setup, set the output resolution to auto and it will output to what your TV can handle [ JAMES R  Nov 13, 2017 ]
No, this will work with regular HDTV's as well. That is what I am doing right now. Planning to switch to a 4k TV later so I just bought this to be future ready. You can play 4K disks also even without a 4K TV. Randy... [ Randy  Nov 13, 2017 ]
No, you do not need a 4k TV. It will play on any tv and is a great unit. [ Judith  Nov 13, 2017 ]
No. It will play DVDs fine on your current set. [ Havens  Nov 13, 2017 ]
No. The DVDs will play fine without 4K tv... you just won't be seeing 4K quality [ Michael  Nov 13, 2017 ]
Yes, if you stop the playback on a disk, it will resume at the same spot once you start it again. If you take the disk out it will ask if you want to resume playback when you put it back in even weeks later. No, there is no way to adjust individual speaker volume. [ Havens  Oct 12, 2017 ]
As long as your TV is UltraHD compatible, then from the X800 in the home screen choose Setup then choose Screen Settings and look for 4K Upscale Setting and choose Auto2. This will cause the X800 to do the upscaling. [ James  Jul 18, 2017 ]
i set the output resoloution to "auto". my understanding is that player will upscale to highest scan that TV can handle. in my case, player is connected to a sony 4K tv. [ JAMES R  Jul 17, 2017 ]
Yes. Set the audio output to "Bitstream". This will ensure you provide the multi-channel soundtrack to your speaker whenever it's available. I hope that helps. My Bio: https://www.crutchfield.com/bio/Ryan [ Ryan  Jul 20, 2017 ]  Staff
The only way to connect an equalizer to this would be to use the coaxial DAC like this one but only use it when listening to music: http://www.crutchfield.com/p_120CSDAC/item.html It will not decode movies, but can decode stereo audio and change the connection to RCA so that it can be sent to an equalizer. You have to download the Netflix app after setup; the player does not come with the app pre-installed. [ DAVE  May 04, 2017 ]

Awesome. Easy to use and fantastic quality image. [ BILL  May 01, 2017 ]
I have my UBP-X800 connected to my LAN, not the wireless. With the higher bandwidth the LAN supplies, I have not had any issues using Netflix. Netflix is one of the many apps available on the UBP-X800. [ Robert  May 01, 2017 ]
in a word, fine. watched a netflix movie this past saturday without any issue. i have a 100mbps from the cable provider. [ JAMES R  May 01, 2017 ]
It works very well with Netflix. It supports HDR and looks great. This is a new model and there was a recent firmware update that improved playback and we can expect others to come along. This should be on your shortlist of UHD players. Good price and a very solid build. [ Havens  May 01, 2017 ]
I've had no problem setting up and using Netflix. The UMP-X800 has excellent wireless capability. I have it set up on a 5GHz network and it loads quickly and streams flawlessly. 4K does buffer in the beginning sometimes so Netflix will downgrade the feed initially. After a minute or two it switched up to 4K and if you run it back to the beginning it won't downgrade. However, because there are only a couple of apps available, I use another device for streaming and have only used this player for Netflix a couple of times (initial setup and streaming 4K). [ CHRIS  May 01, 2017 ]
Works really good! No problems! [ ABRAHAM  May 01, 2017 ]
Yes, you can. You can use the optical audio out to pass the audio signal to TX SR805 and HDMI to pass the video signal to TV directly. You will get pretty decent sound. However, UBP-X800 can help you do lot more with the sound. [ Lianxiang  Mar 30, 2017 ]
Yes it would be possible to use this player with your old receiver - although not ideal. The player has two HDMI outputs, HDMI1 would need to connectect directly to your 4K TV and HDMI2 would connect to your receiver for the sound support. The player is capable of outputting more formats of audio streams than your receiver supports but the handshaking between the two should straighten out any differences. [ David  Mar 28, 2017 ]
Maybe, but don't count on it. I tried it with my old Sony ES receiver and it didn't work. My receiver doesn't accept 4K inputs and the 2nd HDMI output on the player didn't work for me. I think it only outputs audio over HDMI and my receiver didn't like that. [ Jens  Mar 27, 2017 ]
no reason to buy this if you are not upgrading all hardware to 4k. [ Charles H.  Mar 27, 2017 ]
Sure it will work with your Onkyo. That said there are a few limitations. The Onkyo will not pass 4k signals to your TV if you have a 4k display. If you do have a 4k TV you can connect this Sony player directly to the TV using the HDMI 1 output and send the audio only to the Onkyo using HDMI 2 output on the Sony. If you don't have a 4k display the Sony will still work for 1080P content. [ Havens  Mar 27, 2017 ]
YES. The X800 has two HDMI outputs and the one marked AUDIO only can go directly into your receiver and the VIDEO HDMI output can be plugged directly into your 4K TV's HDMI input. [ Ralph  Mar 27, 2017 ]
Yes, you can still use the Sony UBP-X800 with your Onkyo TX SR 805. However, since the SR 805 is HDMI 1.3 capable which means it won't handle UltraHD 4K and it won't pass HDR (HDMI 2.0a and HDCP 2.2 are needed) the best it will do is 1080P, which the X800 will down convert to 1080P when you play UltraHD Blu-ray Discs or other UHD 4K content. The SR805 cannot not handle Dolby Atoms as well, but it will pass Dolby Digital Plus and TrueHD and DTS HD. The X800 is a great player. Very fast as disc loading and very quite. Make sure you use quality HDMI cables. I hope this answers your question. [ James  Mar 26, 2017 ]
As long as the Onkyo receiver in question supports 4K and HDR video signals, then it would work just fine to connect it via HDMI. If you would like to discuss further, feel free to contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. [ Larry  Mar 24, 2017 ]  Staff
