Value plus voice control

Sony's XAV-AX100 receiver works with your smartphone to give you convenient hands-free control and high-quality sound. It features both Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™, so you can control your favorite features with simple voice commands, as well as receive spoken directions as you drive. And it automatically detects the phone you're using, so you won't have to mess with the menus.

Sony XAV-AX100 Digital Media Receiver

Large icons on the screen help you find what you want with just a glance.

Say hello to Siri

With built-in Bluetooth® connectivity, this smartphone-friendly receiver creates a wireless link between your mobile device and your car's audio system, allowing you to stream the music and podcasts you love. With a compatible iPhone® and a wired connection, you can use your voice to control Siri® Eyes Free through the receiver. You'll be able to control music, maps, calls, and messages just by talking to Siri. When Siri talks back, you'll hear the response through the car's speakers.

Awesome for Android Auto

Android users will love this Sony too. You can use voice commands to dictate messages, answer important calls, or use Google Maps to get directions. You can even control music playback with voice control.

Sweet Sony sound

A powerful amp brings depth and dynamics to your music collection. The rich, full sound will even make factory speakers sound better, so imagine the improvement you'll hear when you add aftermarket models to your car or truck. Sony's Extra Bass ensures that you'll hear the thump you expect from your favorite tunes.

You can adjust the 10-band equalizer to optimize the acoustics in your vehicle, or quickly access the preset tone curves to get the sound you want. You can even improve the soundstage by creating "virtual speakers" on your dashboard with the Dynamic Stage Organizer.

Ergonomically outstanding

Distracted driving is a bad thing, so Sony designed this receiver to keep you in touch with your entertainment while you keep your eyes on the road. You use the conveniently located rotary dial to control the volume, or push the knob in to access the receiver's extensive sound control menus. You'll hold that same button to use voice commands for your smartphone.

Whatever you're doing, the big 6.4" color touchscreen looks great and gives you fast, fingertip control over your favorite onscreen functions. All in all, the look and feel of this receiver is really impressive.

Add a backup camera

Rear-view cameras are getting more popular all the time, and the XAV-AX100 comes with a dedicated rear camera input. Customizable guide lines on the screen will help you back up with confidence, even if you're piloting a large SUV.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?

In most cars, you'll need an adapter to retain those controls with this car stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and radio, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. You'll see the adapters that work with your vehicle when you add this receiver to your cart.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Love this unit! Amazing upgrade to my 16-year-old 4-Runner. Installation was a snap thanks to the pre-wired harness (THANK YOU Crutchfield for offering this). Saved me a ton of work (and the ever-present fear of a connection coming apart in my dash...highly recommend this option). This was my first experience with Apple Car Play and it's a good as advertised. Having Google Maps on the Sony's big screen is a game-changer. Much safer when navigating in traffic. About the only negative I can come up with is that the power button isn't lit on the unit making it hard to find at night. A very minor issue. Overall I highly recommend this unit.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Nice stereo with an intuitive and easy-to-navigate interface. The screen is bright and clear, and responsive to touch. The audio quality is also quite good. On the minus side, the USB port is a loose cable rather than something built into the front of the stereo which is not the cleanest solution. There are also fairly limited options in terms of audio configuration and screen brightness (default is way too bright which makes the auto-dimming feature a little useless - however setting the screen to full dim is just about right). Overall, thumbs up.

Pros: Audio quality, bright responsive screen, easy navigation.

Cons: Loose USB cable/port, screen is too bright, not a ton of configuration options.

Good value for features and functionality

Installed this weekend so time will tell, but first impressions are of a good touchscreen deck with CarPlay that works well. Siri function works nice and I was able to integrate a aftermarket backup camera fairly easily once I found the reverse wire.

Pros: Touchscreen "feel", CarPlay, backup camera integration.

Cons: Unit was defaulting to video input even when car was in park. Took some time to troubleshoot, all wiring was good, ended up resetting unit and upgrading firmware and hasn't occurred again.

    Great unit, good price

    2005 Mitsubishi Outlander

Awesome unit, no problems so far. I mostly use it with carplay. Although CarPlay apps catalog is not big what it has fits the bill. Remember that even if there is no app for carplay you can still hear the audio even if its a service like youtube. For Maps or Google Maps it works good, it takes you where you need to go. Siri works very well, but remember since Siri needs to hear you any sound that your car makes will influence Siri, so if your car has its shock absorbers fried or any other thing that makes noise inside your cabin be aware that Siri will not hear you well. For phone calls it work great, the mike it comes with does the job very fine, So far I have experienced no crashes. It gives life back to any old car (mine is a Mitsubishi Outlander 2005 and it works great!!). BTW do yourself a favor and buy it with the Ready Harness, it will simplify your life no end!!!

    Pros: Affordable Price CarPlay compatible

Cons: No front USB, if your car doesn't have a USB port you will have to improvise depending of your car model.

    Great all around.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I must admit, I was leery purchasing a Sony head unit, as I've usually only ever bought Panasonics, but I was pleasantly surprised with both the ease of install and the overall quality of the XAV-AX100. The touch screen is responsive, the sound quality is awesome, and, most importantly, there is absolutely no road/cabin noise at all during phone calls in my 2005 Mustang GT. That's impressive, as the car is by no means quiet. Buy this unit - I don't think you'll ever regret it.

Pros: Great sound quality, responsive touch screen, Apple CarPlay, and crystal clear phone calls.

Cons: None that I can think of.

    2010 Subaru Outback
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Decent unit, looks nice installed in my wife's 2010 Outback and functions well. Be warned, if you have on/off hook phone controls on your steering wheel you will loose them, as the remote control interface for this unit does not support on/off hook (??). The rest of steering wheel buttons do work. Also, the tuner strength does not seem to be as good as in the OEM Harmon Kardon unit. As a final note, there was a wiring error in the instructions for the main harness, the turn on wire for the OEM HK amp was actually on a totally different connector. Also, there was a wiring error in the instructions for the steering wheel controls adapter, i.e. one was pin 11 not pin 13 on main connector. Thank goodness for the internet.

    Pros: Screen, usability, price, carplay

Cons: Doesn't support phone on/off hook steering wheel controls

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The bass this unit produces paired with the Bose speakers in my truck is awesome. 5 times better than the last aftermarket headunit I had installed before it. An easy install, because the chassis is half the size of a normal double-din unit there was no need to cut anything in my dash as suggested by Crutchfield. They really need to update that. Unfortunately I can't comment on the apple carplay/android auto part of this product because for some unknown reason the unit does not recognize there is any kind of usb device plugged into it. I have tried both an iPhone and a Samsung phone, nothing happens. Customer service is awesome, a replacement unit is on the way. Hopefully this is an isolated unit.

    Pros: Awesome Bass

    Cons: Unresponsive USB

Installed in my 07 FJ Cruiser. great upgrade for a decent price. works great and love that it mates up with my iPhone with bluetooth or USB. actually installed this before my new speakers where purchased and it made the cheap stock speaker sound incredible. Paid the extra to have it all put together. worth it made the install fun. Oh and before i forget delivery was fast and free. that is huge for us that live in state of Hawaii. much love Crutchfield

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Way better than the factory radio not only in functionality, but in sound. I thought I may need to redo my truck's audio system entirely to suit my needs, but just adding this head unit made a world of difference. Menu interaction is smooth, initial load time is quick- it feels like quality. I've tested the CarPlay functionality, and it works as expected. Have yet to test android auto. Honestly, if you're looking to improve sound quality, or wanting modern features in an older/base car, but don't want to spend a ton, look no further. Installation is also a breeze with Crutchfield reps able to answer questions in no time.

Pros: -responsive touch screen -good sound -amazing functionality -affordable price

Cons: -screen is a bit grainy looking in some instances. -no front panel USB. You're going to have to route the USB input from the back of the unit to somewhere in your vehicle (comes with an extension)

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This will be a 100% honest and emotion-free. I will describe every flaw and issue I'm *currently* having or have had with this head unit. 1. Regularly this deck boots up to a blank screen...nothing at all is showing but music is playing. I have to either restart my car or push in the reset button. 2. Every time I turn my car off while connected to my iPhone (Carplay), the deck will advance (1) track no matter what. 3. The deck always boots up to the Spotify list screen even though a song is already playing...not smart enough to switch to the actually screen playing the song. I have to manually push (now playing) every time. 4. Carplay...there are too many issues to list, but the main one is what I'd say is screen mirroring. The programming in this deck is so bad that I can't leave any app running and switch to another while leaving the original on-screen. Example: If I have the GPS running and want to change songs...I switch to Spotify on my phone and so does the head unit. This is epic bad programming on either Apple or Sony. 5. The GPS is so slow that is renders it un-usable. I was in a traffic jam recently and tried to scroll the screen to see how far traffic extended...it took me minutes not seconds to simply move the screen around. 6. You have to physically disable the opening warning screen with a screen push...that or download the hack which internally disables this feature. 7. There is an air gap between the screen protector and the touch...i

Pros: It plays music mostly when turned on.

    Cons: Read the review.

    2005 Chevrolet Impala
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed in a 2005 Impala 3.4 Base. I previously had an old Pioneer HU single din. It was a great radio, too, but as times have changed, I wanted a touch screen to use with my iPhone - I use an iPhone 8 with current iOS 12.1. I have 2 new Chevrolets with the touch screens and those are ok, but this Sony is much faster to respond to starting apple play. I use an external 4x125 amp and a 1x500 so I can't speak to how well the radio powers speakers. I did install a rear camera I bought from Crutchfield and it works very well - Boyo VTL17LTJ Backup Cam with LED and Trajectory Lines. I disabled the lines from the camera and only use what the Sony has. I updated this Sony with the official latest updates and it's very easy to do. You can also change the background image but up must use a USB to do so - can't use bluetooth or phone connected to the USB.

Pros: Very responsive with iPhone 8 iOS 12.1 Good options for current technology

Cons: If you leave it on "rear camera mode" - and don't have a camera installed - and shut the car off, it starts in "no signal" (a blank/black screen) mode which was a bit confusing me a bit - not enough to deduct any stars since it was me not knowing rather than anything that feels like a flaw.

    Nice unit!

Pros: Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Big, bright, responsive display Ample power 10 band EQ Great looks

Cons: Volume knob is a bit crowded against auto trim. This is more a result of the design of the mounting kit than the receiver.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very elegant media player. Interface, fonts, menus all superior to my factory media player. Built-in amp has enough juice to drive high-efficiency speakers (Focal in my case). Got it for the Apple and Android support but I use us FM and USB memory stick playback often as well with no complaints. Heck, even my factory back-up camera looks better through the Sony processing. All the Crutchfield supplied parts made for a very clean install. Only rub is the lack of a AUX port for playing old iPods, laptops, etc - which I do miss and was surprised this wasn't on the feature list.

Pros: Better than factory appearance and interface. Nice built-in amp for efficient speakers.

Cons: No AUX support front or back

Work in progress, but deck works great!

This is a great upgrade for my 2008 Toyota Tacoma. It was easy to install with Crutchfield's wiring harness. Love that I can use my iphone for the apps. Now I have navigation. Only downside for me was not being able to use an ipod for music, but my iphone works just as well. I wired it into my console so that I didn't have to keep it in view while using. Looks great and works well. Highly recommend it.

The Sony XAV-AX100 installed pretty esasily using the Crutchfield supplied interface. Controls are intuitive. The CarPlay feature works very well with the iPhoneX. Three minor negatives are: 1) volume knob on the radio is very shallow and difficult to adjust (but, using the steering wheel control is a good alternative); 2) After starting the vehicle and immediately backing up, the rear view camera blanks for a second when the Sony completes its boot-up; 3) The three rear view parking guides distance indicators are adjustable individually using the Sony settings screen however, there is no way to adust the left - right side bars to better match the vehicles backing profile.

First impression so far after installing it today. It's a leap forward over the old factory head unit. Went in easy with Crutchfield's pre-wired harness. Sounds great, looks great and brings my 2008 up to 2018! Everything so far is as described. Customer support was awesome. Called twice just to clarify my backup camera wiring and they were spot on. It looks awesome. Tuner, Bluetooth and Android Auto all work perfectly. I did delete Sony's backup lines though. I'll update later if anything changes, but for the price, you cannot beat this. One hiccup was the Metra adapter for the double din mounting. If I used it as labeled, left to left and right to right, it didn't mount flush at all. Decided to flip it over and it mounted flush. Problem is, only two of four screws lined up perfectly. Had to use a cutout that wasn't designed to have a screw through it. They did catch enough of the edge to make it work though.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very nice radio and a good addition to my 2005 Tacoma. I would give it 5 stars if the plastic mounting brackets on the sides of the radio were more ridged. They are flexible plastic and very hard to mount the radio correctly. Maybe its the Radio mounting instructions that are not good. I cannot get the radio in properly to look nice and have the radio bezel clip into the side brackets. I called CRUTCHFIELD and they sent me a single DIN radio mount and that is not it either. I did use the "T" for Toyota screw holes and tried them in every combination. Im still working on it after a week.

Pros: Nice radio with extras on it. Works really good with Apple car play.

Cons: The install instructions are not very clear. I cant get the large toyota bezel and the radio bezel on together. Once the large toyota center section dash panel is in place there are gaps around the radio.

The xav-ax100 used to work very well. Now I've had multiple issues with it. Android auto is very shotty and doesn't always work. Sometimes it doesn't recognize my phone, sometimes the music on spotify wont play, and sometimes maps don't work. I've also had an issue where when I try to place (or receive) a phone call I hear an extremely loud buzzing and no voices. Another issue I have had was I could not turn up the volume on my bluetooth music. Yet another issue I've had is that when I play music over a bluetooth connection from my phone, the song name, artist, and album won't change with the music, and the shuffle and repeat buttons never do anything when I press them. Very disappointed with this radio as it is very pricy and received many good reviews.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Install was straightforward in my 2006 VW GTI MKV (especially with the ReadyHarness). The position of the screen in my car is little lower than I'd like. The screen size was a bit smaller than I expected, but the viewing angle is great. Even in sunlight. I use the unit exclusively in CarPlay mode - the integration (using iPhone XS Max on iOS12) is almost flawless. Siri voice control is awesome especially when combined with HomeKit - "close garage door". It has a knob! Sound quality is very good. My wife wants one in her car.

Pros: Nice screen resolution; viewable in sunlight. CarPlay integration works well; auto starts playing music from last app used. It has a knob! Easy firmware update process.

Cons: Loses settings when firmware is updated. Clock time can be wrong sometimes, especially when set to "auto". Mute doesn't bring volume to zero; it ATTenuates the sound - just lowers the sound a lot.

I installed this in my 2005 Toyota 4Runner (SR5 non-JBL). NOTE THAT YOU WILL NEED TO PURCHASE LONGER SCREWS TO WORK WITH METRA DASH KIT AND STOCK RECEIVER BRACKET. The 8mm long screws that come with this Sony stereo are not long enough to go through dash kit and receiver mounting bracket. I had to run to local hardware store to purchase longer screws. Other than that, installation was straightforward and I am happy with my purchase. Pros: Very simply to use. CarPlay works great. Physical volume knob. Sound quality is good. Screen is clear and bright. Cons: Volume knob is small. It takes one press on the volume knob, plus a touchscreen press to Mute volume.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this unit in my otherwise stock 2002 VW Golf. Installation with the Crutchfield instructions and wiring kit took, literally, 15 minutes. The unit is very well-made. Early complaints from people about the surface finish seem to have been resolved, as I see no blemishes from fingernails. The screen is pretty easy to see in most lighting, at least without sunglasses. The GUI is very simple, which is amazing. Complicated tasks like adjusting the equalizer is very streamlined and quick to accomplish. The touchscreen works flawlessly, even with swiping and pinch-to-zoom. The microphone quality is [apparently] outstanding. Siri always understands what I'm saying (or as well as she normally does), and the people I've spoken to on the phone have said I sound no worse than I do in person. The Sony takes a good 20 seconds to startup, but once running, it operates VERY quickly. I have never felt like I'm waiting on the system, which I can't say with other units I've installed. I have heard that the backup camera does turn on immediately, but I cannot verify this as I don't have one installed. Sound quality is absolutely stellar. It brightened up the factory Monsoon speakers in the little Golf. I had not expected this. It completely game me the ability to fine tune the sound to make every song, podcast, or phone call sound as perfect as the treble-heavy early-2000's speakers can. I'm very pleased with it, and now want to upgrade the rest of the system!

Pros: Easy to use. Great sound quality. EQ allows really amazing fine tuning of the factory speakers. Apple Carplay is nice!

Cons: Volume knob is small and in an odd spot. The only USB connection is in the rear. Microphone mount can only be clipped to a visor, and is a 3.5mm connector, which is rare among the aftermarket radio world, it seems.

Great picture, good sound quality. I love the knob for volume.

These head units are a great value. Excellent sound quality and ease of use. Bluetooth works flawlessly with no quality of sound loss on phone or music. Apple CarPlay works great. I purchased 4 of these for our fleet vehicles at work because of a trial one I bought. The only thing i wish was a little better is the scrolling from screen to screen to get to the settings app. You have to press on just the right spot. Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this in my 2004 Chevy 2500hd. The site says modification to the dash is required, but I didn't have to modify it at all. The head unit really updates the look of the interior and almost looks like a factory installed head unit. The interface is very simple and user friendly, and the background is changeable unlike some touch screens. It does get a little laggy occasionally in Bluetooth audio, but for the most part it is very quick and responsive. Apple CarPlay works flawlessly. I bought a usb dash plug from amazon and installed it in my center console, and plugged it in to the back of my stereo and it looks great and works very well. All of my steering wheel controls work, although you'll probably have to have a harness depending on the vehicle you have. I had to buy a harness to retain my factory Bose audio system and onstar. I haven't tried out the usb video yet since my truck has a DVD player in the back, but I used the USB port to upload a background picture and it worked for that. The head unit also comes with a remote. I don't use it but I know that that is a feature that many people want. Over all this is a great unit for the money, and it works perfectly for what I need. (My phone wouldn't focus very well in the pictures. The screen looks great in person)

Pros: User friendly interface. Looks great. Lots of features. Apple CarPlay. Sounds great. Reasonable price.

Cons: Occasionally gets a bit of lag.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this in a 2005 Toyota 4Runner with the JBL amplified 11-speaker system using the steering wheel controls and audio interface offered by Crutchfield. This is an excellent head unit because of its simple interface and the fact that it has a physical volume knob. I also added a backup camera, which works perfectly. I'm primarily using CarPlay and a nice detail is that I can still listen to the tuner while having CarPlay open to a navigation app. I can even use the up/down buttons on the steering wheel to cycle through radio presets while the navigation is displayed. The audio from the head unit is being converted to line level by the external interface for input into the factory amp, and it stills sounds great. The front/rear fader controls do not work from the head unit, but that is due to the interface needing to be re-programmed.

Pros: Volume knob, CarPlay while listening to the radio, simple interface, nice 10-band EQ

Cons: When spinning the volume knob quickly in either direction, the changing of the volume could stand to go a little faster

Overall I'm mostly satisfied. Had some minor issues when getting started, like playing spotify; the display would freeze showing one song when actually another would be playing, changing channel on FM would set the channel as opposed to changing it ( this may have been fixed in the sept 2018 software update, which is appears to address button issues on FM. Loving having android auto on the dash as opposed to having it on a phone.

Pros: Works with android auto. Good FM radio reception. Easy to setup, particularly if you get the optional harness.

Cons: The options for dimming the display, on - dim. Will be dim if headlights are turned on. The dimming control from the car does not control the radio.

The unit works well. Only reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is two-fold. First, the volume knob is too small, plenty of room to make it a bit easier to grab and turn. The second is that to alter the EQ you need to several button pushes to get to screen. Needs a button for EQ/Sub adjustment on every screen or a hard button on the side of the screen.

Nice clear display, with the trim ring from the install kit it blends in and looks like it could have come from the factory. I love that it has an actual volume knob. CarPlay starts up quickly when I plug in the phone and works great. The backup camera input works good too - it switches over quickly when I put the car in reverse and the adjustable marks let me calibrate the camera to the distances I wanted to have for each line on the camera display. I also liked that the unit was only single DIN height in back with a double DIN screen - lots of space to pack in the wiring harness behind the radio for an easy install.

I really like this unit. It has all the features that make enjoying music a breeze. The Apple Car play is a serious win, as I was coming from a basic, stock radio, which didn't even have Bluetooth or hands fee anything. The installation was pretty easy, and it sounds and looks great. I'm going to upgrade my speakers and call it a day.

Pros: Not too bad of an install. Great sound. Great looks. An actual knob for volume. Apple CarPlay. Very responsive.

Cons: Volume knob could be a tad bigger, but that's minor.

Unfortunately I had to return this unit as it doesn't have sufficient power for the pre-amp outputs (2V) for my vehicle application, and the adapter using the standard speaker-out connections did not get me sufficient volume without distortion for my factory Bose amplified system. That said, I really liked the interface of this Sony unit. I use CarPlay exclusively, but Sony's "home" interface is ***much*** better than that of its competitors. It offers a nice palette of EQ settings as well as fully-customized control. The graphics look like they belong in this century, unlike Pioneer's, Alpine's and others. Unfortunately due to my installation issues I can't comment on the sound quality of the Sony unit. The reason for the 3-star review is the ridiculous volume knob. I purchased this unit specifically for the volume knob (which very few CarPlay units offer) as my vehicle is older and does not have steering wheel controls. Sony must have designed this volume knob for a gnome or other small woodland creature. It is far too short/stubby for quick and easy adjustment, and because it's so short it's easy to accidentally press it (invoking voice controls) when trying to grab it with your normal-sized human fingers (my fingers are actually quite slim - I pity someone with meaty fingers trying to use this thing). Add another quarter-inch to the height of that knob, Sony, and you've got a winner. Perhaps it works great with smaller Japanese hands, but it's a usability fa

Good budget Android Auto/Carplay HU. I've only used Android Auto, which worked well once I uninstalled/reinstalled Google Play Services updates on my Galaxy S7. The HU is a little slower to boot on and into AA then i'd like (Maybe 30 seconds). The Touchscreen works quite well, and is highly visible even in direct sunlight with polarized sunglasses. My only other disappointments are with features that I knew weren't included on a HU at this price point such as AA over bluetooth, and more advanced DSP features like time alignment, phase, and full range adjustable crossovers. I can always add an external DSP for that, but now that I know I want those features I would have bought a ~$600+ HU and gotten BT AA along the way.

This is a great unit. I installed it in a 2013 Corvette. The instructions were right on. I like buying from Crutchfield because of the instructions and support. It probably took 2 hours off of the job. So far the Android app is terrific. One thing I did not understand when I purchased it is that while it is bluetooth, the Android app is not. I wired the USB connector thru my center console which is clean and out of the way. The display then basically turns into the phone, you just have to figure out all the icons on the touchscreen. As for the steering wheel buttons, most don't do anything because no more CD's. The sound quality is good using the internal amp into 4 woofers, midranges and tweeters that were installed by Chevy. The hands free phone quality is wonderful, you can talk in a normal time of voice. No need for any built in Nav, Google maps from the phone is displayed. Another nice feature is that even though the face is double din, behind is single so there is lots of room for the wires. Easily worth the money.

    Pros: Android app, sound quality.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This product is disappointing. I've had odd issues with it, and even exchanged it on warranty with Sony, but the problems persisted. I can only assume the issues I'm having are design flaws. For starts, the FM radio seems to cycle from loud and clear to muffled about every 30 seconds or so. Then there are issues with Bluetooth. The audio quality while in calls is frequently choppy. Most of the time when I end a call, my android phone shows the call has properly ended, however this head unit shows the call as still being active, and the hang-up button on the head unit doesn't do anything. In Android Auto, it also shows the call has ended, and I can push play on my audio files, but no sound comes out. The only way I've found to end the call on the head unit is to unlock my phone and turn Bluetooth off and back on. Also, less frequently, I can make or answer a call and the display shows the call has connected, but I can't hear the other person, and they can't hear me. The Android Auto works well and sounds good, but the issues with the FM radio and hands-free calling are really getting annoying. While I didn't have the unit during the warranty exchange with Sony, I just put a Bluetooth speaker on my dash and used it for Bluetooth audio and phone calls, and everything worked perfectly. Also, my other vehicle has built in Bluetooth support and everything works fine there too, so I don't think it's a phone issue.

    Pros: Android Auto works well

Cons: FM radio and Bluetooth issues.

After purchasing the new head unit from Crutchfield, installed this the Sony XAV-AX100 this morning. Everything works as advertised. The screen very responsive and the sound is amazing. I attached my Wife's Pixel 2 to the radio and was astonished that Google maps and Waze both worked. The only issue that I have (the reason for only a 3 star review) is something that has been reported on a few other forums. The calling feature doesn't work properly with Pixel phone's that have been upgraded to Android Pie. It makes a strange crackling noise. I will update this review and raise my rating if either Sony or Google fix this issue in a timely fashion. Crutchfield is always the best place to buy all of your electronics.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Stations clear on my stock radio are weak and full of static. There are 18 presets, only 6 on a page; odd given that the buttons are small. More could fit, or they could be larger and easier to hit. A quick touch doesn't register; and a slightly more deliberate touch changes the preset to the current station rather than changing the station to the preset. The seek buttons are big and sensitive - one is right next to the teeny-tiny slow-to-respond volume knob so that if you brush it while adjusting the volume, you lose your station. The steering wheel controls work well with Crutchfield's adapter, so I avoid touching the screen as much as possible. POR gives a warning cleared by pressing "OK". Every. Single. Time. Even the steering wheel controls are disabled while the warning is up. Screen occasionally hangs blank - fixed by turning the radio off and on. There's only 1 sub jack. So you can drive the amp with a single input, or use a splitter to feed Left and Right. It's a "low-level" output - meaning I couldn't use the auto-on feature of my Kicker amp, but had to run a turn-on wire. Finally, the output is ON when the EQ screen reads "SUBWOOFER OFF"; and OFF when the EQ screen reads "SUBWOOFER ON". This almost had Crutchfield tech support convinced my unit was defective, as it is counter-intuitive and not documented anywhere. Apple Car Play is clunky, and takes over completely if you plug into USB. I found it easier to use Bluetooth and a separate charging cable f

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The 05 Mustang had a factory Shaker 1000 head unit which no longer would accept any CDs, so it was time to replace. I wanted to try CarPlay, and this head unit was the top pick on Wirecutter when I looked. Crutchfield had at a good price with additional harnesses and adapters that made it a great value. Installation using the ReadyHarness I bought from Crutchfield saved me an estimated two hours of installation time. Fortunately the OEM speakers were more than up to challenge, and AX100 is able to drive the speaker array for better sound than OEM Shaker 1000 head unit. This car stereo now sounds like a new, high-end install, its 10 speakers (6 front, 2 rear, 2 powered subwoofers) all sound clear. CarPlay support is fast. I ran the head unit's rear USB cable to center console storage and am happy with the CarPlay interface, using instead of Bluetooth. A Lightning USB cable to iPhone provides it recharging power and CarPlay connection. Already am loving apps like Pandora, Overcast for audio playback. Can't wait until iOS 12 when third-party nav apps arrive. I have a convertible and the display is readable with with the top down. I snaked the microphone cable through trim panels and have it positioned on driver-side sun visor. It works fine with top up; haven't tested mic yet with top down, but there's no good solutions for sound quality when the wind is rushing by... :) I do not plan on using the backup camera, nor playing video media files, so c

Pros: - Responsive user interface; Display is also very responsive to touch, just like Wirecutter said it would be - Simple, clean design. Knob for volume and Siri hands-free activation is a pleasing experience - simple to install (with Crutchfield know-how) - Dual DIN adapter pretty much matches the OEM panels - Drives clean sound; equalizer presets and custom EQ let the sound really be shaped - Loads quickly / plays music collection from USB thumb drives seamlessly.

Cons: Single sub pre-amp out. - The shaker 1000 wiring has two subwoofer line-level connections; a simple RCA splitter cable fixed this. No CAN bus access to car telemetry "out of the box". - OEM head unit had "Speed Volume" setting that would increase volume based on vehicle speed. Not a deal breaker, as the smooth sound and volume knob of the AX100 compensates No iPod support. - USB connection supports CarPlay and Android Auto as well as USB mass storage, but does not s

    The Best Volvo Solution

Dennis from Westborough, MA on 8/7/2018

This is an awesome, affordable CarPlay unit. And it's a great choice to drop into a Volvo. What I mean is Volvo aesthetics dictate that any aftermarket radio will cheapen the look of the car. So when my HU-850 radio died in my 2006 XC70 I was faced with buying questionable used or paying $1100 installed from my dealer. For a radio that was cutting edge 12 years ago (dinosaur) which even included a dashboard pop-up, CD-driven steering wheel keyboard maps. It looked good a dozen years ago, but outdated and overpriced. This Sony unit is so understated and non-blingy (especially for a full display unit) that with the installed dashboard bezel it looks like it was designed for Volvo. Seriously. The bad was that I lost the back up sensors (which were fairly lame) and it couldn't be hooked up to the Volvo external amplifier (but the Sony is super powerful) and I lose the front center channel (see DSO below). Also steering wheel hookup is a bit more, BUT at less than half the price of a replacement radio it's a no-brainer. This unit is more powerful than my old one so my old "premium sound" is better. It also has a Sony DSO setting that creates the sound direction from in front (so the center channel thing is unmissed). I now have a great sounding super-cool CarPlay unit that destroys my old one & looks like it was made for my Volvo Cross Country. I can make phone calls, hands-free text, listen to Spotify and have GPS all active.

Pros: Simple understated design, Super powerful drives speakers with ease, Apple Car Play and Android Auto, Responsive screen, Great custom sound settings.

Cons: Some olde time Volvo features are lost, but most are compensated for.

Would highly recommend this radio to anyone.

I bought this stereo for my son to replace the OEM stereo in his first car - a 2006 Hyundai Tucson. Using the included free, installation kit and wiring harness, the stereo was fairly easy to install. We connected it to a backup camera that we installed and it works great. The Apple CarPlay feature was a big seller for me on this stereo and it works great. Side note: just make sure that you do not have any CarPlay restrictions enabled in your iPhone settings; if you do, it won't work. The included USB cable extender is plenty long enough to make it from behind the dash to wherever you want to place it so you can plug in your phone. My son likes the customization of the background by adding his own photo and he likes being able to use Siri to play his music. This is a great stereo for the price in my opinion.

Pros: -Clean looking stereo - fits nicely with the car interior -Good sounding stereo - even with the stock, OEM speakers -CarPlay is awesome

Just bought this Sony head unit and installed (meticulously, per instructions) in our Toyota Corolla....and everything works great except one thing. It DOESN'T WORK with Android Auto!!!!! This was the single, sole, solitary, most important reason we purchased this unit. It had great reviews on this and other sites....but it has the DREADED BLACK SCREEN syndrome when connected via USB to any Android phone. Works fantastic with Apple CarPlay. Totally useless as an interface to Android Auto cell phones. Seriously disappointing......needed this to work for my son to have hands free access to his phone, but alas - big letdown. I spent the better part of a weekend installing this and making sure it all looked factory. If I could have left a ZERO rating, I would have.....but it would not let me do that.

Easy to install in the 2010 Prius with the trim kit. Screen is bright and super responsive with minimal delay. Would recommend this.

Cons: There are 18 presets for radio stations and I really only listen to six which is the amount for each page. It would be nice to have it only cycled through 1-6, so next on 6 would go back to 1 and so on. Instead it goes all the way through 18 presets.

Overall, rather pleased with this product. Arrived promptly and in good condition. The wiring kit matched almost perfectly with it and the installation went smooth. The matching mounting/trim kit (2011 Rav4) looks nice but feels a little flimsy when putting together. Android Auto - Requires the parking brake wire to be grounded, otherwise it will tell you that you cannot operate Android Auto while the vehicle is moving. Other than that, works great. Apple CarPlay - Worked immediately and my wife loves it. The white Eyes Free Siri button is a big hit! The custom EQ option has been a big help in fine tuning the new speakers we installed with the new head unit. Bluetooth connectivity has been easy and useful when we don't feel like plugging in the phone. The microphone is clear and makes phone calls easy. I would have given this item 5 stars but it didn't blow me away. I am happy with the purchase and would recommend it to anyone else looking for a less expensive upgrade. *There were a lot of other units that I looked at but the rotary volume button was a big plus for me. Makes it super easy to turn down the music without having to look at the unit.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great product for the price. Love the responsiveness of the screen, Apple CarPlay and the sound quality of my factory speakers now. The wired microphone for Siri and handsfree calls is also very nice b/c it can be mounted directly, or nearly so, in front of the driver to pick up your voice more clearly (I have mine mounted on the instrument panel where it doesn't interfere with any of the gauges). It has a few bugs that detract from it however. For those who still listen to the old school FM radio like myself, one can't not listen to the radio and have a phone plugged in at the same time. The radio will play 5-30 seconds then it will kick off back to Apple CarPlay. Selecting the "Tuner" again will result in the same thing 5-30 of radio and back to Apple CarPlay, over and over again. This is very minor but there's only the option to have 1 of your own background pictures saved on the system so if you like to change them periodically, the USB drive will need to be hooked back up to upload a new one, it will not pull pics off your phone. TIP: for the unit's clock to maintain the correct time, your phone must remain plugged in until the car is shut down and all electric power removed. If not, the clock on the unit will jump all over the place, an hour back, 9 hours back, 9 years and some change ahead (yes, I'm serious). That's all I can think of at the moment, but overall it's def worth the money, just a little buggy and "dumb" sometimes.

Pros: Very easy to install, especially w/ Crutchfield's wiring harness (took 1.5 hours) Good microphone Bluetooth and interface w/ smartphone Good sound Good radio signal

Cons: It's still kinda "dumb" Unable to listen to FM radio with smartphone plugged in Very tiny volume knob Clock time jumps around if phone unplugged with vehicle powered

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It's a pretty good radio for the mid-lower end of touch screen radios. I bought it mainly because of price and the fact that it supports both Apple Car Play and Android Auto. Both work well. The touch screen is responsive enough, however some "buttons" on the display are too small. For example, the tuner's station selector buttons are tiny and sometimes hard to hit. They could be bigger. My radio's firmware was one rev behind, so I upgraded it, which went smoothly. I wish it had inputs for XM, as I just discovered my car had a factory XM receiver. This radio doesn't even have an AUX plug (the rear photo shows port marked EXT, but it doesn't do anything - not even mentioned in the manual). The rotary knob was a big draw for me, however this one is too small and hard to turn, especially for installations like mine where the face is recessed in the bezel.

Pros: Car Play and Android Auto work well, touch screen is responsive.

Cons: No aux input, knob too short, small, and hard to turn.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This head unit is really everything I expected. Overall, I am very satisfied. I only gave it four stars, because of the dash kit that Crutchfield sells for it. That isn't really Sony's problem, but the website didn't offer me an option for reviewing the dash kit. My complaint is the unit doesn't fit flush with the dash plate. It is recessed about an 1/8" all the way around. It has a "barn job" kind of look to it. Very disappointing, for the price of the head unit, you would think that Crutchfield would make sure that the finished look with the dash kit they sell and recommend would have a better fit. The installation went smooth, and was a breeze with the Ready Harness from Crutchfield. That really is a service worth the price. I was vexed enough by the look of the dash that I went back out the next day and tore the whole thing apart again to see if maybe I screwed up something in the install. No. There is really only one way it fits, and what I got is the best it is gonna get. The lip on the inside of the dash plate that rests against the head unit will not allow the face of the unit to fit flush with the plate. I'd say poor design, but I really think that it is just a matter of trying to make one dash kit work for too many different models/brands. The instructions (including the Master sheet provided by Crutchfield) could have been a little more detailed and/or gone into a little more depth. Shipping was quick, and the e-mail communication excellent.

Pros: Excellent customer service, shipping, and communication.

    Cons: Dash kit sucks

Everything works great. Good looking screen and apple carplay and android auto work well. The volume knob is annoyingly small but not a deal breaker. The screen touch sensitivity is fine but definitely not "smartphone good". The screen is a "soft touch" rather than the hard glass feel of a smartphone which I much rather prefer, but again its not a deal breaker. Screen touch and volume knob brought down to 4 stars instead of 5.

Pros: Good features, good screen detail, decent value.

Cons: Volume knob is tiny, screen sensitivity isn't as good as a smartphone, you have to get a separate USB connection to wire to the front because the only USB port is in the back.

this is a fantastic stereo. It links perfectly to my iPhone using Bluetooth or car play cable and it just plain works. the controls are clear and intuitive, the back-up camera starts the second you put the car in reverse without waiting for the booting of the head unit, and it sounds great. I had some reservations about the resistive touch screen vs. a capacative one like the Pioneer unit has, but it works great and is super responsive. Best unit I've ever bought. let's see how it holds up over time, but this was well worth the money.

Absolutely love this stereo! It has upgraded my experience in the car completely, and now I look forward to getting into my car and travelling just to enjoy the music. Rapid boot time and it's up and running within 10-15 seconds of turning on the car. The unit connects quickly and easily to my iPhone by bluetooth or CarPlay, and I have had no issues with this. Touch screen is appropriately responsive and the glare has not been an issue. My major reason for purchasing this unit over comparable Pioneer or Kenwood units was the volume knob instead of buttons. A common issue I had read about before purchasing this device was that the volume knob tended to recess deep into the housing unit; and though it does sit deeper than I would have liked, this has not been a significant problem and I am still able to utilize the volume knob quickly and easily. Installation was a breeze - they did include Posi-caps with mine, but there was no clear instruction on where this went, but eventually figured it out. I simply could not be happier with my purchase and technical support I received, and I will return to Crutchfield in the future for all of my audio needs.

Bought this to replace a Pioneer FH-X720BT I installed, (still a good system, too) mostly for CarPlay. So far so good! Install was a breeze in my '04 Aviator. I've been using this for several days now. Definitely update the firmware to 1.02.07 if it's not already, as it automatically dismisses the attention screen on every startup. It would be nice to get rid of this completely, but it's a good first step. Viewing angles have been great, and I been quite satisfied with the display quality. (was my #1 worry) I've seen reviews of a slightly long boot-up time, but it has booted for me as little as under 10 seconds. I think the longest part of the whole installation process was trying to figure out where I was going to route my USB cable. Since Crutchfield offered the mounting harness + wires for FREE, it was a no-brainer to buy this here. I'm hoping this unit will last a good while.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First CarPlay multimedia receiver I've owned, so not able to compare it with anything else. Purchased as a scratch and dent, very happy with the purchase. The radio works and sounds well. It takes about 20 seconds to "boot up" when it's turned on and to get through the warning screen each time. CarPlay and Bluetooth works great and I've only noticed a few glitches, such as Spotify unable to load a couple of times, but it could be the phone and a weak signal. Volume knob is small, but the unit has a lot of features that were well thought out, such as 2 bass boosts, input volume adjustment and simple menu navigation. No regrets so far.

Pros: Simple navigation, CarPlay, great sound without having to "fiddle with"

Cons: Long "boot time", especially after having to wait for the warning screen to disappear. Small volume knob

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

*This is an initial review and will be updated when I become more familiar with the unit. I was wanting a double DIN stereo that was Android Auto capable so I could use Waze and Pandora on long trips. I debated for quite some time between getting this stereo due to its low price and true Android Auto versus going with a generic Android based system (apps are built in, has its own GPS antenna, etc.) that would only utilize the Hot Spotting feature of my phone. If a well known and trusted company offered a Android based stereo, I would have gone with that in a heartbeat. But, I couldn't justify spending money on a stereo that has mixed reviews and no support if it were to fail. The stereo seems of decent quality and everything expected was included in the box. The system itself is odd in terms that the chassis of the stereo is a single DIN while the screen is a double DIN size. I've seen this in no name generic stereos so I would safely assume it is a cost saving feature and without a built in fan, there is less area to dissipate heat (shorter life?). Install was simple but please note that some install kits will stick out and effectively block 1/3 of the volume knob as in my case. System works well, it is layed out in a sensible manner, and didn't have any issues with my test run. But, it is SLOW. It is 2018 and there shouldn't be 1-3 second delays when hitting buttons. Other than that, everything works great. For the price it is fine, but nothin

Pros: -Works well. -Sounds great. -Adjustable dimmer/ability to turn off the screen. -Can manually select Rear View Camera.

Cons: -Absurdly slow system - everything is annoyingly delayed when using Android Auto. -No built in fan. -Have to hit "OK" every single time the stereo turns on.

    1. This receiver did not actually fit the dash opening of my Scion xB; it's about 1" too narrow. Plastic filler strips were supplied and do fill the gap but the installation looks less than a perfect fit. 2. The screen is 640 x 480 pixels, which nowadays is rather low resolution. This is a problem with.... 3. ...Android Auto, which is why I bought this unit. It's a low-tech kludge solution to transmitting information from your phone to the screen on the receiver. It requires a hard-wired USB connection between the phone and the receiver, which is not mentioned in the project literature. And the Android Auto software is pretty poor, but this is Google's fault. 4. FM radio reception is poor, worse than the stock Pioneer unit.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I really like the unit. It does everything I wanted it to, but works even better than I expected. Very intuitive interface, and very responsive screen (key for me). I installed in my 2008 Civic, to help me squeeze a few more years out of it. Hands-free phone works great, google maps fantastic (slightly different than it looks on your phone). I love being able to access all that stuff, and charge my phone, with just one wire, and without having to have it on the dash in the sun. So far, I've found the screen easy to read in all kinds of light too. (Wish the OEM system in my wife's Highlander worked half as well - can't read in bright sunlight, and the mapping app is beyond terrible). I'm dropping a star because of the parking brake splice. First, the instructions didn't mention it at all. You just figure it out once you get the harness done, and there's this 5-foot green wire that's not mentioned anywhere. Then you have to search youtube to find the Crutchfield video, where they mention how easy it is to tie into the parking-brake wire using a "posi-tap". Tech support assured me you could get them "anywhere", but I tried AutoZone, O'Riley's, and NAPA and nobody even knew what I was talking about. So I bought a pack of 6 on Amazon and had them in 2 days. I would totally have paid Crutchfield that extra in my order, if I'd known it was necessary. Ended spending more time tracking that part down than actually doing the install, and I know *nothing* about cars!

Pros: * Android Auto is awesome (never used it before) * Didn't touch the factory speakers, but things sound better anyway * Love the screen - very responsive (just like wirecutter said it would be) * Like the physical volume control knob * Phone support was good - I know because I had to call it 3 times (see 'Cons')

Cons: * Installation instructions stop too soon: Had to go on youtube to find out how to remove the centre console in order to install the long green 'parking brake' wire (easy). It recommends the 'posi-tap' connector, which is not included (c'mon - I just needed one!) * Phone support assured me that you could buy these "anywhere " listing Napa, O'Riley's, and AutoZone. I went to all three, and none even knew what I was talking about.

The interface is sleek and rather intuitive. Android Auto runs well with easy access to navigation, music, and your phone. The touch sensitivity can make certain operations a little difficult to differentiate (quick tap vs hard, select vs. scroll) but I'm sure if I messed around with the settings I could adjust the touch sensitivity to something just right. The retain accessory power adapter worked well but it was interesting to discover that it operates differently than the factory stereo. It retains accessory power for as long as any accessory power is on. The factory unit would retain power until the doors were opened suggesting an additional relay internal to the unit that is not a part of the RAP adapter. I'm still having trouble getting the steering wheel controls adapter to reset and learn the controls of my VW Jetta. I took it out of a Mazda 6 and I'm hoping that the adapter is still okay. No knock on the Sony unit, but I can't attest to how seamlessly that adapter plugs into the wiring harness adapter. At first I thought the rear view camera input wasn't capable of automatically switching when you went into reverse but then I found the reverse input lead out of the wiring harness. Once I spliced that with the video camera's power wire the rear camera started switching on when I put the car in reverse.

So, being able to install a pretty cool touchscreen radio that works well with my phone takes the edge off of driving a powder blue minivan. I won't pretend to be an audiophile that is in it for the power of the bass and the soaring heights of the tweeters. I wanted something cooler than the stock radio that would show me the navigation and play the music from my phone. This unit does that and more very smoothly. The response from the touch screen can be a bit dodgy, and I join the chorus of users who are sick of the warning screen on start up. Overall though, I'm very happy with the unit and I'm pleased to have a bit of fun in an otherwise pedantic ride.

Pros: -It does everything I wanted it to do. -It looks good in an otherwise uninspired dashboard -I like the physical volume knob

Cons: The warning screen on start up is like that buzzy fluorescent light in your office. At first you don't mind, but after a while you're thinking, "WHY must you do that!?!?"

    Works great!

Easy install and setup. User interface is fast and intuitive. Sony quickly connects to the phone and give the CarPlay essentials with a very responsive touchscreen

Pros: Low price, high quality. Great brand.

Cons: Parking brake wire has to be grounded initially to setup unit. This isn't clearly spelled out in the instructions

Exactly as expected. The Android auto is a great feature and pairs easily with my phone. I installed some jbl club speakers in my car a few months before this and I wasn't impressed with them until I had this head unit driving them. It makes them really come to life.

Excellent unit at a good price. The only thing I don't like about the unit is the tuner home screen. The preset stations don't have configurable or static labels. Each preset is numbered, but under the number, the description changes depending on the last received song name or artist for that station. I think it is tied to the RDS (radio data system) information, but I can't seem to change it. I would like to just have the radio station dial / channel address / station name rather than this mess. I can live with it because I don't use 15 presets, but I wish there was a way to change it.

Pros: Great sound, love Android Auto integration

Cons: Tuner presets don't update with the station name or channel frequency

Great design and sound. The display is easy to read, even in bright sunlight, and can be turned off if desired. I like the large font clock time on the home screen. Touchscreen is very responsive. Settings menu is easy to navigate and intuitive to use. Easily paired two Bluetooth phones and it switches between them as needed (though reconnecting is a bit slow). Firmware updating is straightforward and you should do it: with version 1.02.07 (4/4/18) the safety warning screen displayed at startup will now close automatically after a few seconds (it seems Sony was responsive to customer feedback about this annoyance). FYI to get Android Auto to work you will need to attach or ground the green parking brake wire during install.

    Cons: Somewhat underpowered

Sounds great, nice upgrade even with stock speakers. Blends into the dash so well it almost looks stock. No chrome trim or gaudy LEDs which is pretty rare for car stereos these days. CarPlay works flawlessly. Highly recommend using the ready harness service, it definitely made the install go a lot quicker. Only issue I've encountered so far is the unit is recessed into the dash just enough that I can't really grip the volume knob with 2 fingers, I have to slide my finger from the side. This is the case in my car and may not be an issue for everyone.

Pros: Good sound CarPlay Attractive design

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I put this radio into my 2004 F-150 Lariat Super-Crew with premium audio system and can definitely say that the sound quality has improved, considerably, just by changing the receiver. The only complaints I could really say I have is that the music player (over Bluetooth, at least) doesn't offer the shuffle/loop options and it takes a bit longer to startup than the stock radio . That said, I can get in, start the truck, put on my seat belt, and by the time the engine RPMs drop to a regular idle speed (about 15-20 seconds), it's booted and reconnected to my phone and started playing music from it. Compared to the stock navigation radio in my Dad's 2014 F-150, it's much more responsive, once booted. The touch screen is much more sensitive (you don't feel like you're gonna poke a hole in the screen), and it reacts a lot faster than the 2014 stock. It also has a swipe-able scroll-menu screen, unlike the 2014's stock, which uses slow response scroll buttons, instead. I haven't done a whole lot with the Android auto, yet, as my drive to work is very short, so taking the time to grab my cable out of my lunch box to plug it in for a 5-minute drive seems kind of pointless; but I can see it being very useful, on longer drives.

Pros: -Has great sound with the stock premium audio speakers. -More responsive touch-screen than the stock models in the newer trucks. -Auto-reconnects to nearby Bluetooth players, if available. -Doesn't blind me, at night, like the blue lights on my Sirius receiver did, if I don't turn them down/off.

Cons: -Has a 15-20 second boot time. -No playlist shuffle/loop options on screen when connected via Bluetooth (at least when using Spotify over Bluetooth, anyway). -I worry about draining the battery by continuing to listen to it after turning the key off!

    Awesome Little Radio

Caleb from Tyner, KY on 6/4/2018

    2015 Hyundai Accent

A great little radio. I was originally concerned with the screen being sub-par, but it isn't even bad. Of course it isn't going to have the same resolution as a 2018 smartphone but people forget that this is a radio for a car - it doesn't have to be that great. Apple CarPlay works great so far and so does bluetooth connection. Seriously, as soon as I get in my car and get the radio booted up, my phone is instantly connected. It's pretty impressive. I cannot recommend Crutchfield enough. They sent a wiring harness, dash kit, AND installation instructions FOR FREE. Just for buying the radio! I can't speak of the quality of the instructions because I had someone install it for me, but the pictures were of the correct dash for my car, so I'm assuming it works out. However, the dash kit that Crutchfield sent for my car (2015 Hyundai Accent Hatchback) doesn't fit very well. The dash kit itself makes the radio sit about an inch back in the dash - but that's the dash kits fault, not the radio. Anyway, if you just want a basic Apple CarPlay/Android Auto head unit, this is the way to go! Couldn't be happier.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I couldn't be happier with this unit. And, the price is unbelievable, considering units of lesser capability were going for a thousand bucks just a few years ago. If you are considering a new in dash unit, and do not know about Android Auto and/or Apple CarPlay.. stop what you are doing and research these. this capability is revolutionizing car music, messaging, and navigation. There is no built in nav on units such as this Sony, instead it relies on the completely current input from either Google Maps or Waze right from your phone (Android only, sorry Apple users). Your phone just plugs into to the standard size USB dongle provided with the unit and then instantly connects with the Sony.. no bluetooth pairing.. blah blah.. it just works. You can add virtually any music or sound source app to your phone (Pandora, Spotify, YouTube Music, plus NPR and other news outlets).. all sources are then instantly accessible from your in-dash screen.. Don't forget the backup camera capability (just purchase any generic camera of choice) which will display automatically when you select reverse. The short sales description for this unit doesn't do it justify, nor has my short treatise covered all the features. As mentioned above, this Sony does NOT have built in NAV (who uses those anymore.. the maps are obsolete as soon as you take it out of the box?) and it has no CD/DVD player.. again, with all the online music sources these days, who plays CD/s anymore.

Pros: My Crutchfield sales tech provided all the answers for installing in my Porsche Cayman, and included all connectors, fittings, AND the OEM-look surround bezel. Thank you Crutchfield! Also, this is the ONLY unit available with Android Auto AND a REAL volume knob, a big deal in my mind

I purchased this headunit to replace the stock unit in my base model 2012 Chevy Sonic daily driver. I travel a lot and wanted a good quality Carplay capable unit and this fit the bill nicely. I really like the minimalist design of the unit and the fact that it retains a physical volume knob and seek buttons. The sound quality is much better than the stock unit and works well even with the stock speakers (which will eventually be replaced!) The install was very simple and setup was a breeze. The touch screen even though restive instead of capacitive is very responsive and clear. If you are looking for a great simple Carplay / Android Auto headunit that retains some of the physical controls instead of solely touch screen and a good price this radio is for you.

I have a 2010 Chevy Silverado with the Bose system. I bought this stereo to replace the factory one, and added the module to retain chimes, steering controls, etc. I should have done more research beforehand, so I'm not blaming Sony or Crutchfield, but this stereo is too deep to fit into the factory double DIN space without some pretty major modification. If you are adding RCA cables and/or a camera, you definitely cannot fit this stereo into this truck without taking out the metal cross bar that runs along the rear of the space. If you have a 2007-2014 Chevy or GMC truck, buy something else, or be prepared to modify the space. Other than that, the stereo works great, looks great, and sounds great.

Bluetooth works flawlessly with my iPhone and CarPlay/USB sound is spectacular. It fits right into the double DIN space, but is only taking up the top single DIN area. The XAV-AX100 does not disappoint on many levels. I use it exclusively for CarPlay purposes. The functionality does not feel at all limited by the safety. Installation was pretty straightforward. Even when it wasnt as much so, a quick phone call to Crurchfield proved to be just what I needed to stay on track. The head unit itself has a wonderful, simple form factor that is reminiscent of the simplistic look of Apple products. Ease of use, even sporting a resistive screen, is tops. You'd hardly know you're not dealing with a capacitive version. It sounds fantastic, of course. I've already performed a firmware update on the unit and it was simple. The added infotainment functionality in a tidy, good looking package for the money is entirely worth it. Buy with confidence from Crurchfield and don't think twice.

The user interface of this Sony is much more refined than other aftermarket CarPlay receivers I have driven with lately. The physical volume knob is context specific so you don't have to navigate menus to adjust the volume on different features. The display is sharp and bright during the day and dims with the car lights at night. The display may also be turned off while still enjoying audio. The equalizer and audio sources are a touch away while other features are available via the menus. The bluetooth audio is solid and iPhone CarPlay is available via USB, but not bluetooth. The only thing I don't like about this receiver is the "don't drive distracted" warning that Sony requires you to acknowledge every time it's turned on.

Pros: Easy to use interface. Sharp bright display. Context specific volume knob.

After reading on the E46 fanatics forum site about them using their Sony, I decided to go against what Crutchfield said will fit in my 2004 BMW 330Ci. Using the Scosche SLC-4 to adapt the stereo to the BMW HK amp set up, and a Double Din surround by Metra, the stereo installed actually quite easily. Because the thickness of the stereo is only at the top half, it clears the ductwork that keeps most Double Din stereos from fitting. So far it sounds great and looks great.

Pros: Single Din chassis with a double Din LCD allow it to fit in an E46 BMW. Look great, sounds great

    Cons: None so far.

Without steering wheel controls option, the stock clock display on the is non adjustable. The faceplate is too small for the receiver face and the the volume knob is obstructed by the side of the faceplate.

Very good for the price. Don't have another unit to compare it against, but out meet our needs 100% for our daughters Kia Soul. Backup camera display, Carplay and a navigation interface (through the phone). The only thing keeping it from 5 stars is the volume knob; it's kind of pointless since it's so small and requires 8-10 revolutions to go through the full range.

Pros: Carplay is really nice. Display is bright and intuitive Retained almost all steering wheel controls

Cons: Volume knob Slow to boot (8-10 seconds) Parking brake wire (had to research how to hook up).

I will keep this short. Installed this into a 2008 tundra without steering wheel controls. The aux jack died on the original and that was the breaking point for me to get a new head unit.Sounds much better than the factory unit. Install was fairly simple. Overall love android auto experience so far. Some people had an issue that there is no hd radio. I don't care about hd radio...you don't buy this to listen to the radio.

Pros: excellent sound quality. Fairly responsive.

Cons: nothing really stands out for me. The weird Velcro thing they give you to keep the extended usb cable together...I gave up after a few tries and just don't bother using it.

This is a great head unit if you are going to use Android Auto or Apple equivalent. Having said that, there aren't a lot of features in the unit itself. It has a tuner, USB connections, Bluetooth connectivity, a backup camera, and that is it. The settings menu is a little sparse as well. For the features it does have, it excels at. The short version - if you aren't going to use Android Auto or Apple, this isn't the right radio for you. If you are going to use those, get this unit!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I love my new Sony Multimedia Receiver!!! I upgraded the factory system in my 2007 GMC Sierra. The Apple CarPlay integration works really well and provides a great selection of content for my commute. I love the intuitive user interface that Apple CarPlay provides. I purchased a flush mount USB extension cable from another online retailer that made for a very clean looking install by replacing one of my 12v power plugs with a USB plug for the Apple CarPlay. I paid extra to have the ReadyHarness made up for me and that made the install so easy!!! Well worth the extra money. I opted for the iDatalink Maestro with the iDatalink HRN-RR-GM5+ Installation Harness which allowed me to keep and customize my steering wheel controls as well as all the tones and chimes. I had previously upgraded my factory speakers with 6.5 inch Alpine SPS-600s (Bought from Crutchfield back in 2011). The Sony XAV-AX100 brought them to life in a way that I had never heard before. The sound quality is excellent!!! This was a great purchase. I have always been a huge Crutchfield fan and they have never let me down! If you want to add Apple or Android Auto to your vehicle I highly recommend the Sony XAV-AX100!!! The install guide and adapters provided by Crutchfield made for a quick and easy install.

Pros: Apple CarPlay is awesome!!! Great price, easy install and the best customer support!!!

Cons: The warning screen that comes on every time to turn on your vehicle is not really a big deal, just annoying.

I like the receiver with the exception of the back up camera function. It's been well documented (google it) about the issues with the camera coming on when you turn on the power and mine comes on when I have my phone plugged in using apple car play. The camera will come on when I receive a text or hang up from a call. It's in the firmware and something simple to fix if Sony would just address it. Other than that, I like the unit.

Very satisfied! Works well with rear view camera. If you use a BOYO VTL17IRTJ Camera it is super easy and you don't have to figure where to get the reverse signal as the camera harness powers the camera from the rear via the backup light and a wire is integrated into the harness along with the video signal that you connect to the rear sense input on the radio. It automatically switches to rear view when put into reverse. On occasion it does not come back to the original screen and says no video, but just pressing home button clears that.

Pros: Excellent integration with rear view camera

Works great. Installed in a 2005 4Runner and used a SCOSCHE TA2079B mounting kit which includes a replacement mounting bracket. Threw the standard flimsy Metra kit in the trash. This HU integrated very will with steering wheel controls using the PAC RP4.2-TY11. Very nice function on the HU to program the steering wheel controls from the HU rather than some interfaces which require programming/reflashing with the interface connected to a computer. The clock sometimes goes wonky but corrects pretty quickly. The touch screen is responsive and quick. Originally bought a JVC HU, but the screen layout was awful, busy and clunky. Sony really got it right out of the box with a very clean user interface that looks great and works intuitively. The old guard of car radio makers need to step up their game in this regard. One note is that when the radio first starts up, it seems to take a moment to shift into the user-selected equalizer/balance. I like a lot of rear fade since the rear speakers are so far back and when the unit starts up, all the sound is coming from the fronts. Glad that it starts quickly, but it takes just a moment for the EQ/fader settings to catch up. Some complain about the warning button on startup. I don't find it a problem after weeks of using the unit, but it would be nice if Sony had made the "accept" button larger so you don't have to aim your finger to press the acknowledgement button.

Pros: Great screen interface quick response time programmable steering wheel buttons Clean design Real volume knob! (but I end up using the steering wheel buttons anyway)

Cons: clock time sometimes way off, but corrects pretty quickly button to disable startup warning screen should be larger

This was not my first choice when I decided to update the radio in my 2008 Chevy Avalanche truck. After a few weeks with my first choice I called Crutchfield and explained to Customer Service what my complaints were. They agreed to make an exchange and I spent a few extra dollars and updated to the Sony. Was not too enthusiastic about changing radios since I spent a fair amount of time wiring in the original unit, but was able to use the original harness and the changeover went quickly. Also with the Sony I was able to also install the adapter so I could use the original steering wheel controls. The Sony worked right off after install, but after about a week it would start shutting down. Another call to Crutchfield's excellent service reps and after I confirmed that all soldered connection were intact, they sent me a replacement unit right away and it has been working flawlessly for the last six months. I chose this radio mainly because of the Appleplay which I also have in my 2017 Corvette. Very pleased with Crutchfield and the Sony

I have had the unit for three months. It will work well some days and not so well others. I use Android Auto. I experience poor quality with dropouts on phone calls (works fine if I unplug and speak directly on the phone so it isn't the signal). Sometimes voice texts work sometimes not. I also really dislike the fact you are limited to certain apps with AA. I don't like the music interface either. Looks the same no matter what app you use. I like to see album cover, artist , album and song on the screen. The AA has the cover in the background and not visible. No album name listed either. If I connect via BT I get all the info but no album cover. Sound quality is very good. Nice built in amp.

Install was easy, has features of more premium units (Android Auto, Apple CarPlay) but costs much less. Doesn't make my car look like it just drove off the set of 2Fast2Furious so my car retains it's classy appeal. Touchscreen is responsive despite being resistive, though in bright sunlight it can be difficult to see. Nothing darker window tint can't fix though (and probably has somewhat to do with where the stereo in my car is located). Wish you could edit stock EQ presets/create more than 1 custom EQ but overall sounds good. Overall this Sony is the best bang for your buck as far as cost/features go, highly recommend.

Generally a very good stereo. Screen is very responsive and individual screens are well laid out and clear. Android auto works well but is very limited in what it will let you control and does not let one get into the total application that they may be running (e.g. Google Music). Install was easy and moving through the settings and interfaces were smooth and fairly intuitive. My unit had some quirks like the screen going blank and sound going to a low level and never returning to normal levels. I am unsure if this is the Android Auto app or the stereo itself. Working with Crutchfield has been excellent as usual and we will get it worked out I am sure.

I have an older Sony that I love. Went with Sony again, but this one disappoints. Ordered two units at once, both had non functioning microphone ports right out of box. Not the mic itself, but the actual head unit was faulty. Two of them. Yes everything was wired right because when I got two replacements they worked with the original harness/mic install. All other features would work as well. I'm disappointed that I have to us Android Auto or Apple Car Play to use voice commands vs. a simple BT connection. That means I have to have my phone plugged in via USB to fully utilize the unit and I have to use the app. It will output audio via BT but it will not allow you to use voice commands.

Pros: Great sound. Lots of features. Easy to use. Great screen. Great unit...when it works. Works well with Android Auto or Apple Car Play (Must have phone plugged in via USB, unit comes with rear USB so I recommend a front USB flush or dash-mount extension to go with). Easy install.

Cons: Must use Android Auto or Apple Car Play to use voice commands via Bluetooth. Must use USB connection to use Apple Car Play. Android Auto will come on without USB connection, but can't integrate screen to Sony receiver unless plugged in via USB. Unit only has rear USB despite USB connection being so vital. Cannot use voice commands via simple Bluetooth connection (not using ACP or AA). I got two simultaneously bad units...the odds? Replacements worked. Sony customer service not great.

Easy to use & great touchscreen response.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was installed in a 2008 Tahoe non Bose system. The radio functions really well and is very easy to navigate through the menus. I wish that it did text messages without being cabled. The factory radio in our Jeep lets you text via Bluetooth but it seems this radio is not capable. The installation in my case was very difficult, while the radio states that it will fit it has serious clearance issues on the back of the radio. You CANNOT plug in any RCA cables or the FM antenna without cutting the dash behind the radio. Ten minutes with a multi tool and the guts to cut your dash and your done! I am overall pleased with the radio but the fitment issue and the no text over Bluetooth lost it a star.

Pros: Ease of Use Touch screen is super sensitive Plenty powerful

Cons: 2008 Tahoe fitment issues. No texting over Bluetooth.

Disappointed at FM reception. I installed in a 1999 Miata in LA/Orange county. FM reception seems a bit week in general. In particular it cannot pull in the local NPR stations (88-90 Mhz range) (which, being a LALAlander, I listen to a lot). I would have expected much more from a $400 unit. The other parts of the receiver work well, so 3 stars. Does anyone have suggestions for bettering the FM reception?

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have built lots of computers before, but never touched my car. I wanted nothing to do with soldering or splicing so was a bit intimidated by the process. I am glad I purchased the Ready Harness as that made this doable and a lot easier for me. I was a bit disappointed in my car that I could not just reconnect and reuse the existing microphone and USB wiring, though nothing I had read in advance led me to believe anything else either. I just thought I would get lucky. I called Crutchfield support during the installation process and they were very helpful in just reassuring me to what I needed to do. I wound up leaving the reverse wire disconnected as I do not have a backup camera. I have not connected my steering wheel controls but would like to circle back and do this at some point (it will require soldering or splicing of wires). Stereo sounds great with my existing speakers. Bluetooth and CarPlay both work great. I really like the control system for the stereo. It is well thought out and easy to use and adjust things. I highly recommend this stereo.

Pros: CarPlay Great UI and controls Screen looks great Ready Harness makes wiring simple for a newbie Crutchfield Support is great

Cons: Warning message is mildly annoying but not a big deal Screen works great but sometimes a swipe gesture is interpreted as a button press Automobiles are stupid in general. Why is wiring not standardized with simple plug and play connectors? Needing to splice wires in 2018 is ridiculous -- none of this is Crutchfield or Sony's fault of course.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this for my 2003 4Runner as a replacement for the factory JBL Synthesis system. The Sony is a perfect fit with the install kit and adapter box Crutchfield recommended. The AX100 looks great and provides better audio than the factory unit. Integration with iPhone X using CarPlay is perfect and a joy to use. Hands free calling is also a plus. The touch screen interface is responsive and easy to us. The instructions Crutchfield provided were spot on and easy to follow. This was my first car stereo install and it went off without a hitch. The wiring was daunting at first (connecting the new radio harness wires to the adapter harness I purchased) but following the instructions carefully and using some common sense I got through it. If this wasn't my first install, it wouldn't have been an issue. One minor thing I regret is not connecting the interface box USB to a cable I can access without removing anything the first time around. I plan to install that cable now, so I can make adjustments to the factory amp if needed and find the best settings. (The 4Runner factory amp has some adjustments outside of what can be done with the AX100.)

After resisting the urge to replace my factory CD receiver in my 2008 F150 FX4 Supercrew, the desire for better iPhone integration and hands free calling finally won out. After doing my research online and reading your reviews, along with reinforcement from Crutchfield, I chose this receiver. I am very pleased with this unit. At age 55 I could not get past not having a volume knob for instant adjustment. Making the screen slightly smaller to allow for this became a moot point once it was installed and in use. This is a good looking unit, the graphics are very clean and simple. The sound improvement and equalizer are a noticeable improvement over the factory stereo. The menus are fairly intuitive and I quickly became used to accessing everything I needed. Hands-free calling is quick and easy on blue tooth, and better on Apple Car Play. With Car Play you get Siri for all of your voice commands for calling, navigation, and messaging. With the Metra steering wheel interface kit, all controls were retained. Crutchfield's service and knowledge is the best in the business. While their pricing is very competitive, when you factor in the included installation kits and written, vehicle-specific instructions, the Crutchfield value is unsurpassed. I installed an Icespring flush mount USB extension in place of the factory lighter socket so I did not have a loose USB cable to deal with, and a Blue Sea dual USB charger socket in the other so passengers can be charging on

Pros: -Great display. Solid good looks. No silly graphics. -Intuitive operation.

Cons: -The volume knob response should be quicker -Metra adapter harness was not pinned for steering wheel controls so I had to cut and splice wires. If they just added pins or at least ship them loose so they could be added as needed. Everything else was plug and play except for these 2 wires -Metra Dash mount kit required modification to get the head unit to sit flush, it tended to tip the top of the receiver out.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Self-installed in a 2007 Suburban with a PAC RP5 - replaced the stock head unit. Samsung Galaxy Edge is my primary smartphone. Because I do a lot of driving in one of the most congested areas in the country (DC Metro) and the area is rife with speed cameras and radar traps, I've become a chronic Waze user. I also listen to Pandora or Spotify during drives over 15 minutes. I also receive frequent texts from family, business and friends while driving. I found myself multi-tasking while interacting with Waze, Pandora and was frequently distracted by incoming texts. My eyes were off the road way too often to be safe and I was setting a poor example for my soon-to-be-driving 15 year old son. I needed a solution to this less-than-optimal setup with the stock head unit. It was a matter of choosing a quality head unit with Android Auto at a reasonable price that would fit my Suburban without too many modifications. The Sony XAV-AX100 fit the bill. A clean quality look. Installation did require a right angle RCA adapter plug for the back up camera input to allow the unit to sit flush in the dash and some notching/cutting of the plastic backing of the stereo opening was required. I was pleasantly surprised to find that I can listen to the radio while running Waze - something that wasn't possible with my smartphone/Bluetooth setup with the stock head unit. Not bad. Has the car play functionality I was looking for. Audio performance is good. However there seems to be firmware glitch with the backup camera. If rear view camera is selected from the main menu the receiver will default to that view (rear camera) whenever it is turned out. This is independent of having the car in reverse. The camera will turn on and off when the vehicle is put into reverse. I am absolutely sure it is wired correctly. The stereo works fine for its application and as long as I do not select the rear view camera for the main menu the unit works as intended.

Great receiver! I bought this primarily for CarPlay in my 06' Civic. I wanted something that didn't look too aftermarket and had a dedicated volume knob. It blends into the car just fine, and although a little small, the volume knob has a good feel to it. I was worried about what the touch resistive tft screen would look like, but it's not bad. It's a good tradeoff for visibility in bright sunlight. The CarPlay integration is nearly perfect. When you listen to the radio with the CarPlay screen pulled up, you won't be able to see any tuner information, but you can change station presets with the dedicated forward-reverse buttons. The audio control handoff works as expected. If I'm listening to the radio while using Maps, the voice assistant comes in over the radio, then dips back out. If I also get a phone call or text, the radio goes away, and Maps interrupts when necessary. It works great.

Installed in 2012 Kia Optima ... I paired this with an Auto-Vox Cam 6 backup camera and I love it. Note: the Sony has a reverse wire connection ... I did not tap my backup camera into the reverse circuit ... but instead I used the the wire off the back of the head unit labelled REVERSE and tapped into my reverse lights that way. My backup camera gets red accessory power, so it has power even when the car is not in reverse. The Sony lets you see the camera view whether you're in P,R,N,D. I read complaints about the nag screen and a somewhat (but not too) slow bootup process. From what I can tell, using the Sony's reverse wire connection bypasses Sony's nag screen that comes on during startup when you put the car in reverse. It looks like the Sony gives priority to your backup cam. I've only had it installed for a couple of days, but it looks like you can go through a normal startup process (i.e., put the car in reverse like you normally would) without waiting for the Sony to boot up. Did this today, the backup camera video was displayed, then when coming out of reverse the nag screen popped up. Also read about backup camera problems. I had a few glitches testing during the install, i.e., backup camera wanting to come on. This happened before I hooked the reverse wire from the Sony into the car's reverse light wiring. Ever since I did that, the camera works great! Tried Apple Carplay & Android Auto ... both work awesome! Also connected parking brake

Purchased this for my mom's Hyundai Azera Limited. Her factory radio was on its last leg and she didn't have a backup camera. So I paired this unit with a Clarion backup camera. Being a Kenwood guy myself, I initially leaned towards getting her a Kenwood unit. But I felt with all the features and layout, she would be overwhelmed. So I came across the AX100 and I have no regrets! The sound quality is amazing! If you're not deadset on HD radio or SiriusXM, then save your money and go for the AX100! The sound quality is better than a lot of Kenwood and Pioneer units, and CarPlay is quick and flawless! As always, Crutchfield was amazing when I was purchasing everything, to include all the installation gear. Most of the cons in previous reviews here are irrelevant and ridiculous to put it lightly. If you have ANY issues, call Crutchfield and they will help whether it's operator error or equipment related. If anyone is complaining about software issues, Sony released updated firmware late last summer. Lastly, I agree with the complaints regarding the Safety Screen acknowledgment. It gets annoying quick! HOWEVER, there are online videos that show you how to deal with this. Doesn't take long. As soon as Crutchfield brings back the $50 off incentive, I am going to purchase the AX200 for my Accord. It's sitting in my cart as we speak, Crutchfield *hint, hint*

I just fish it thru the side of the center console then to center storage unit. The button is good to have, but with the cx5 adapter it is too close to the side of the adapter so if you have a smallish fingers it should be fine. Very, very pleased with this unit. I wanted an Android Auto capable unit that had a clean, close-to-stock look, easy-to-navigate user interface, good sound, and a reasonable price for my 2011 Corvette. The XAV-AX100 checked all of those blocks with the added bonus of being a simple install with the PAC unit and pre-wiring provided by Crutchfield. Physical volume knob is great. Matte finish matches the rest of the console trim for a nearly stock look. GREAT sound with numerous EQ and DSO adjustments available. Android Auto integration is seamless. You can play music and videos from a USB flash drive. One of the best looking and responsive resistive-type touch screens I've ever seen/used. The only cons are: 1) No CD/DVD slot. Not that important these days, but something to be aware of when purchasing. (note the "200" has CD/DVD, but the unit is a bit too deep for the dash space in the Corvette) 2) No Sirius/XM module hookup capability - but I suppose you could always stream through your phone with the app but you'll have to choose between android auto and Sirius as I don't believe the Sirius app is Android Auto compatible. (I believe the "200" version has XM hookup capability) 3) One camera hookup - many other models are equipped with front and rear camera hookups. If you're not looking for these specific features, I think you'd have a hard time finding a better functioning and looking Android Auto/CarPlay capable unit at this price poi

While I really love the car play integration, the beginning nag screen and station ID issues would keep me from recommending this to anyone in the future. The boot time is slow enough that you can start your vehicle and starts driving before the nag screen pops up, requiring you to do exactly what the screen asks you not to, look at the display while driving. The station ID issue is that the head displays last song instead of station ID, an absolutely stupid feature that makes no sense what so ever. It wouldn't be an issue if SONY allowed for some way to shut it off in settings, but I haven't found any. Another note, I paid for the "pre wiring" feature from Crutchfield when ordering this, and that was a waste of money. I ended up having to cut it apart because they didn't integrate a ground wire for the remote steering accessory. My wiring instructions supplied weren't the correct ones and required two calls to support, who seemed very put off having to answer my call. This was my third stereo purchased from Crutchfield, and not the best experience this time.

I installed the Sony AX100 in a 2002 Chevrolet Silverado. THe radio looks great and is working great. Just need to get used to Apple CarPlay... the texting feature is fantastic... there is no reason to pickup the phone and text. The installation? Well, I have some issues and I'm a little disappointed in the 1st service call I made. The first problem I ran into was... the theft locking mechanisms... they are these plastic pieces that mount to the side of the radio. The pre-drill holes do not work for my installation. I called tech support... I was told to just drill holes. I instantly became angry but I did not show it. You see, I couldn't figure out how to mark the plastic with the radio installed hence me calling tech support. I would have hoped Crutchfield would have provided a template for my install. I did come up with a work-around that seems to be working out well; I used double sided tape... nice and thick (1/4") tape... two layers of it on the side of the radio and two at the bottom of the radio... worked out perfectly, the radio is nice and snug. Along with the radio I purchased the antenna cable which was needed and the wire connectors which were absolutely amazing.

    Pros: Apple CarPlay cool interface.

Great head unit for Android Auto. The only problem is the cable length. In the beginning I connected my phone to the factory USB port but the screen will turn black randomly. After some research on the internet, I realized the factory USB inside 2013 Subaru Forester is really rubbish so I connected to the back USB port directly and no more black screen!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit provides a great upgrade to the stock radio in my 2006 Toyota Tundra. I really like the simple interface, the equalizer, and the multiple sound settings. It works really well with Android Auto although I kind of wish there was better interface for the music apps but that's more a knock on the apps. The wiring harness needed a couple of extra steps (see my installation notes) but the overall instructions were very clear and the install was relatively easy. The warning (nag?) screen is what it is and it does take a half minute for it to boot - not a con to me but something to be aware of. Installation notes: 1. My radio was the stock JBL but not the one pictured by Crutchfield - mine had CD and cassette deck so the Metra 95-8202 Dash Kit needed modifications to fit (removed everything beyond the hole closest to the trim piece - very fragile so be careful). 2. The parking brake wire and the reverse input wire on the PAC RP4.2 do nothing when connected to the associated wires on the unit. You will have to run a wire to the parking brake switch and a wire to the reverse input if you want your back-up camera to appear when you put the vehicle in reverse. 3. You can remove the Sony unit default lines on the back up monitor by going into the settings and shrinking the lines to as narrow as they can be and they will disappear. I liked the lines that were on my backup camera better than the ones that are set in the unit and figured this out by accide

    Pros: Simple installation with the PAC RP4.2-TY11 Wiring Interface; great sound;

    Cons: Screen glare

I love the new stereo, however a note to those with a Mitsubishi Outlander 2015. You lose the functionality of the usb port in the center console as well as the backup camera. There are no ports or adapters as of yet for these functions. I am currently trying to figure out how to wire in an RCA cable to adapt the camera and get it working. I have attached a wiring diagram of the vehicle, only one I could find. I would love to find the actual plug names so I can find the corresponding female counterparts to get this going without hacking and ripping open the cables in the vehicle itself.

The screen is a bit smaller than other units, as well as the factory head unit that was installed. Other than that, everything connected together and worked fine. Android Auto as well as Carplay work as they should. It would be nice if the volume knob stuck out a bit further, as it is difficult to grab and turn as it is. At least if there wasn't a taller volume knob, a mute button or pushing the knob to mute would be nice. As the unit is, there is only a ATT function that partially mutes, and you have to push and hold a button to activate it.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this receiver for my wife's 2008 CR-V, mostly for the BlueTooth connection for hands-free calling. The installation was not difficult, though the instructions on connecting the steering wheel control (sold separately) were not very clear. I have several issues with the unit: 1. The radio tuner reception is poor. Stations that were clear with the factory radio are fuzzy or unattainable. 2. Searching for a person in your contact list is nearly impossible. All you are allowed to supply is the first initial of the first name. Than you have to manually scroll from there. With a lot of contacts, this is possible. 3. There is so much wasted real-estate on the interface. Why do I have to go to home for basic operations? Icons for phone, tuner, etc should be on every screen at the bottom. There is still plenty of room to display information pertinent to the current operation. 4. You should be able to remove icons that you are not using, like the reverse camera (I did not install one). Again, wasted interface space. 5. The Seek function on the tuner doesn't work well. It stops on non-working stations. 6. Startup is slow 7. You have to agree (clicking OK), every time you start the car.

Pros: Receiving a phone call is great, and the audio is clear.

Cons: Poor interface execution with practically unworkable features such as contact lookup. Radio tuner is poor.

Clean look, and it has a real volume knob!

I purchased the Sony XAV-AX100 for my 2007 4Runner and have loved it. Installation was long, but straight forward. The couple questions I had were solved within 5 minutes of being on the phone with Crutchfield. Great customer service. The device has been working well, Its great to have apple car play. In the 3 months I have had the deck, I have experience small problems that I assume are more related to Apple's software than Sony's. Occasionally Maps has a hard time finding an address and has to be restarted. I've had the unit crash once and it restarted itself no problem. Its not the perfect seamless operation I buy Apple for, but it gets the job done nicely and I would purchase it again for a second car.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed this in a Toyota 4Runner 2006. Single DIN radio back end leaves room for additional wires and steering controls. Wire harness kit provided by Crutchfield is worth the extra $$. Bought this for volume knob and Android USB connect abilities. All the comments regarding great audio fidelity are accurate even if you leave your existing OEM system. Very user friendly with good and responsive screen controls once you get the hang of it (read the directions!). The much commented slow start up and safety screen at boot up are minor issues and are found in new cars too. My complaint with this unit is with the Android USB connection. I had latest software update but unit would still drop connection with my phone after a few minutes. After a few helpful but useless calls and close review of user comments on Sony/Crutchfield/Amazon I decided to spend a few extra $ to get the newer XaV 200 unit to see if SONY had fixed the connection issues. Glad to report that they have, but it's annoying to existing Xav 100 owners that they cannot fix it. If you have the 100 and you feel like going through the extra work you can swap both units and use the existing wire harness and controls. It's worth it for the CD player and newer version of the software. Thanks Crutchfield for making it easy.

My first double din reciever ever in all the vehicles i've own. So my experience would be different from others that has experienced the touchscreen radio and all the bells and whistles that comes with it. I had the stock radio for years. I had enough of the poor sound quality and finally caved in and upgraded to this Sony XAV-AX100. I've researched long and far for a replacement in my Jeep and found this Sony to be in price range and quality. The biggest selling point was android auto and an actual physical knob! Although i do wish for the volume knob to be bigger, it does the job just fine. Touchscreen is a bit slower than my smart phone. I often find myself having to double tap the screen to get the option i want. It is not laggy but doesn't have that "direct" response i wanted. All in all, a great first touchscreen reciever. I highly recomended for any Jeepers out there. I purchased ths reciever, wiring kit, and dash kit from Crutchfield. So one stop shop for me. Thanks again.

    Pros: Physical knob. Android auto

Cons: To me, slow response time. The volume knob is a bit on the small side.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Perfect Android Auto / Apple Carplay interface with great sound output. Did a lot of research before finally purchasing this unit, and it has proved to be a great product. Installed in 2011 Tacoma with JBL and Metra TYTO-01 integrated the amp and speakers seamlessly. There are some notable limitations, such as not AUX cable input option and no ability to rearrange display, remove clock, or relabel icons, but these are nitpicky and hardly detract from the overall great unit. Safety screen upon boot-up is annoying, but hardly a dealbreaker. Already have a backup camera built into rearview mirror, so I used the camera option for a front-facing camera--very useful for parking and rock crawling. This unit is really built around Android Auto / Apple Carplay functionality, and that's where it really shines. I also bought the recommended steering wheel control adapter--Metra ASWC-1--but the functionality was limited to volume, track change, and mode; despite every programming option, update, etc. To get full steering wheel button functionality (including bluetooth controls), don't use the ASWC-1. Buy the Metra Metra 70-8114 (provides SWC harness so you don't have to cut factory harness) and splice an AUX cable directly into the Metra 70-8114 (be sure to ground as well). Then plug AUX into "remote" on back of HU and program using the HU interface.

Pros: Android Auto functionality Apple Carplay functionality Great sound Clean UI

Cons: No AUX input (not a big deal) Doesn't bring over caller info via bluetooth (does however with Carplay/AA)

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I almost didn't order this product because it doesn't support the factory backup camera in my 2014 Subaru Outback. It would have been easy to add a new camera, but with the existing camera already installed, I wanted to see what could be done to support it. The Outback's existing camera requires +6V to operate, which is supplied from the Subaru head unit. The Sony doesn't provide this, but I was able to procure a third-party step down transformer from Axxess (AX-CAM6V, apparently not sold by Crutchfield) which I installed on the branch circuit to the camera. I had to splice this in to the Axxess harness, but that was pretty easy. I also had to figure out how to get the signal back from the camera into the new Sony head unit. The Axxess harness comes with a pair of RCA leads to AUX in, but these were useless on the Sony HU, so I extracted the AUX wires from the Axxess 28-pin connector and moved them to the camera signal pins (I only needed one of the RCA cables for the camera). That allowed me to plug the camera in to the Sony head unit. Fired it up and everything works! I didn't have to make any splices in the factory wires either, so I can swap back the OEM HU if I need to return the car to stock at some point. It would be nice if the ReadyHarness service included this wiring, since it would have saved me a day of fussing around. There was no saving the built-in factory hands-free mic, however. HU supplies power and ground to the mic as wel

Updated the 2012 4runner a lot with this head unit. Sometimes the volume knob seems a little small, but this thing is way better than I expected. I was able to get a kicker sub/alpine amp (on the cheap) wired up quick and it has a setting for the sub output in the system menu, but I'm not sure weather or not it acts like a crossover if you turn it on. Also it has preset equalizer modes (like rock, hip hop, dance, etc), along with one custom eq setting. If you push in the volume knob it pulls up a quick menu that allows access to it, you will also find a extra bass menu that allows you to quickly adjust the bass (which I never use). I can say "hey Siri"and tell it "I want directions to... and the map/directions pull up. I mostly use pandora and amazon for my music and plugged in via usb sounds really clean, and there is a noticeable downgrade in audio if you stream it over Bluetooth. Next I'm going to mod/update the dash speakers to 3.5" and probably the remaining speakers because the factory speakers don't do it justice especially w/ the added bass. Over all, very pleased.

Pros: Clean looking, looks factory, added menu features

I purchased this head unit recently and so far I am very happy with the sound quality. The menus, navigation and the options are all pretty good. The touch response is not as instant and natural as what you would find on a smartphone. I use it with Android auto and there is a little bit of delay when interacting with the unit. My biggest complain however is the rotary nob. The nob is very small and it is located right at the edge of the unit. In my car (2005 Nissan Xterra) the nob is too close to the AC vents and that makes it very hard to grasp and control. Since this is the only way to turn the volume up/down and also access the most important tasks on the unit it is very annoying. Sony should have known better.

Overall, very pleased with this head unit in a 2008 Ford F150. Chose this model based on support of Android Auto, backup camera support, volume knob, clean/simple interface, and price. Response to touch input and voice commands is fast, compared to 2015 Camry. Crutchfield sends the correct wiring harness, antenna adapter, and mounting kit. No need to find these on your own. Pleased to find that the screen can be completely turned off while music is still playing (great for night driving). The backup camera is almost immediately available. This means that if you are in a hurry, no need to wait for the HU to bootup and warning screen OK. Once the car is in reverse, (provided you have the purple wire connected to your cars backup lights), the backup camera image appears. You still have to acknowledge the warning message but, not until the car is no longer in reverse. The warning message and forced OK acknowledgement can not be disabled, almost docked one star for this. One remaining problem is that text messages are not showing up in Android Auto. Some users report this can be caused by the USB cable. Still working on this. Almost bricked the HU doing a firmware update to 1.02.06, following Sony instructions. HU was stuck in a loop (Update failed, press reset button....) after 50% update. Switched the update files from older 4Gb USB thumb drive to 64Gb SanDisk Thumbdrive and the Sony broke out of the loop and completed its update. Thanks Google search! Crutchfield gets 5 star.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed this unit on my 2014 Nissan Juke, it really helped make an older car feel new. I live in the city and don't typically drive for long periods of time but once I installed this I planned a longer distance trip 1.5+ HR drive. I noticed that when the display was running the navigation via CarPlay for a long period of time it would get warm, not hot but enough to be concerning. My hope is that I installed it correctly and it's just the way the display is, rather than user error. Doesn't seem like many people have had that same issue, because I've searched and only found a few people dealing with it. I've got a really long drive coming up at the end of November so we'll see if the distance is too much for the display. Other than that I noticed that the audio in my stock speakers is much better, the bass drives harder than it ever did with the stock unit and overall it is more enjoyable. CarPlay always connects just fine, though sometimes have an issue getting Spotify to work 100% of the time, simple fix though as you just need to close the Spotify app on your phone and reopen via the display. It's a bummer that I've lost steering wheel controls, even though I bought a converter but I couldn't seem to get it to work. Will spend more time this weekend trying to figure it out.

Pros: Brought out the best in my stock speakers Made my 2014 car feel new again Apple CarPlay is next level for me

I love this receiver! I'm new to Android Auto and really like everything about it. One of my favorite features is you can be using Google maps in Android auto, but play your local radio stations at the same time. So glad I purchased this unit.

Pros: Sound quality, value, interface. It's all good!

Cons: Take a minute to boot up, but nothing major.

Great Price, Features, Interface, and CarPlay Functionality

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This has been a great HU for Apple CarPlay. I wanted a unit that was in the this price range and I found it. This unit has surpassed my expectations. I selected it over other Pioneer and Kenwood units due to its simplicity and it's volume knob. The Sony interface is superb when your phone is not hooked up for CarPlay. Crutchfield customer service told me the install would take about two hours and it took me six. I first wired it up and then had to problem solve a few different times which extended my time. The instructions they sent were good but they do not include problems or differences with different models and trim levels. The customer service members can only really help with the model they used to install it. They do have additional pictures if needed though! I installed the mic next to the head unit by the driver's right leg (see picture). This allowed me not to have an unsightly wire strung. It sounds great. My Corvette is a two door coupe so the glare is pretty bad but the Siri functions help. I plan to tint the windows so it should improve. The safety message isn't a big deal for me because this is not my daily driver. If it was I could see it being annoying. I love the bass boost and the DSO functions. The screen has worked well. All of my steering wheel controls work and I like having the option to change them. This unit has definitely brought my aging stock 2007 sound system into the future!

Pros: Volume knob, Sony's non-CarPlay interface, sound enhancements, single-din design for install, no gaudy aftermarket interface and buttons, and price.

Cons: Wired mic (I'm not sure why this can't be built into the HU), screen glare (if you have a tinted coupe, four door, or SUV it should be fine), and the safety warning at start up (all units have this though).

    Black screen with Android Auto

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great unit but still having issues with a black screen with android auto. Read a few articles that point to firmware updates but have yet attempted. As that is the main selling point I can only give this three stars for now. I also tried multiple usb cables to no avail. The install kit provided by Crutchfield made installation a snap.

Pros: Great sound enough power to not really require an additional amp for my components Easy installation Easy interface, logical Volume knob

Cons: Black screen with Android Auto

    Great Unit

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This Sony media receiver is a great unit. It sounds superb, hooked up to a premium 9 speaker system with a sub. Android Auto is something I've never used, but it seems really convenient, voice control is intuitive and accurate and being able to use navigation, stream music and send text messages all hands free is sweet. I appreciate how simple and classy it looks, which helps it blend in with cars dashboard and escapes the tackiness of some of the other receivers out there. Got it from Crutchfield along with steering wheel controls module (which also all work), speaker gain control module which gets the right sound to every speaker, including the subwoofer at proper levels and dashboard kit for my 2006 Acura MDX. Its been years since I bought form Crutchfield or installed any car stereo equipment, but Crutchfield knocked it out of the park for me. They got me all the proper stuff in great fit and working order, within a couple days - which allowed me to install it over the weekend. Took about 90 minutes to hook everything up, their ready harness option was big help, also called their tech support for about 20 minutes, and they answered all my questions to help me out with installation. These guys know their stuff and when it comes to customized audio for your vehicle, these guys are simply the best. So far I'm very happy with this Sony Receiver. Its a quality component and a perfect fit for my vehicle. Plan on adding back up camera at some point in near f

Pros: fantastic features Android Audi and CarPlay quality sound future proof ease of installation blends in with interior

Only dislike is that you have to press "OK" every time you turn the car on to get past the annoying warning about using it while driving.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I love this head unit! I put one in my wife's 2010 Honda Fit and it is now our preferred vehicle to drive over my 2015 Crosstrek. I hate the head unit in the Crosstrek. They are both double din, touch screen, but that stock unit has no functionality like this one. I'm going to replace it with one of these ASAP.

    Pros:

    Cons:

Great product and service makes install EASY!

You just can't beat Crutchfield's service and installation guides. The product fit perfectly and their recommended accessories/installation parts made installation easy. Product itself is easy to use and works perfectly. The backup camera I installed with the head unit occasional shows up when changing between home and CarPlay. Easily remedied by selecting home or CarPlay again. Minor problem that is easily overcome.

    Pros:

    Cons:

Attractive radio, even without using CarPlay/Android Auto
