About the Sony XAV-AX210SXM
iDatalink Maestro lets you keep your factory extras
iDatalink Maestro lets you keep your factory extras
Sony is a great choice for home A/V gear, and that reputation is well-deserved with their car audio line up as well. One of the features that makes the Sony XAV-AX210SXM DVD receiver special is compatibility with the iDatalink Maestro module (not included). In a wide selection of vehicles, this module lets you keep factory features that you'd otherwise lose when you install a new radio. You'll also be able to check out engine performance data and other vehicle info on the receiver's screen. Once you've identified your vehicle, you'll see the iDatalink module offered on the way to the Shopping Cart if it's compatible.
This Sony supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
And as a cool bonus, a SiriusXM tuner is included free with this receiver so you can subscribe to enjoy everything satellite radio has to offer. If you're a road warrior you'll appreciate all the music, news, talk, sports offered by SiriusXM — you'll get the best variety without worrying about your smartphone's data plan. Once you subscribe, the included SiriusXM tuner will allow you to listen to your favorite stations all the way from Atlanta to Albuquerque.
The SXV300V1 SiriusXM tuner plugs directly into this receiver. You'll also need an XM or SiriusXM subscription. Satellite radio service is available only within the lower 48 states — not available in Hawaii or U.S. territories. Limited service is available in Alaska.
Smartphone compatibility that rules
I've reviewed a lot of receivers that promise smartphone compatibility, and this Sony ranks high in easy usability. You can plug your iPhone® or Android™ into this receiver and take charge of a variety of apps for navigation, music, and more from a pair of very cool interfaces.
Apple CarPlay™ — CarPlay is an iOS user's dream. Plug in your iPhone and you'll access a friendly iOS styled interface that lets you quickly jump into your music, podcasts, messages, streaming music and more. CarPlay's a no-brainer for me — it's simply a much safer and simpler way to use your phone in the car.
Android Auto — With Android Auto you'll enjoy a simple, safe, and easy-to-use interface that lets you stay focused on the road. Maps, music, communication, apps, and voice control are ready to roll when you plug in your compatible Android device.
Spotify and Pandora® control
If you're a streaming music services fan, you'll appreciate how you can control your Pandora and Spotify accounts from the receiver. Just connect your iPhone via USB or Bluetooth, or pair up your Android™ with Bluetooth and you're all set. If you're a Google Play Music subscriber, Android Auto lets you tap into millions of songs anywhere, anytime.
Bluetooth® wireless command
The XAV-AX210SXM is ready to roll with hands-free calling with your compatible phone, plus the ability to wirelessly stream and control music. Plus, with your compatible iPhone, you can take advantage of Siri Eyes Free functionality, using your voice to place calls, select music, hear notifications, add reminders — even compose and listen to text messages.
The receiver's LCD screen plays DVDs and other video content in bright, clear detail when you're parked. You can keep your passengers entertained by sending video from the receiver to a rear-seat screen — that sure helps to minimize wars in the back seat. And you can play it safe when you throw it into reverse by plugging in a rear-view camera. Two additional camera inputs cover other camera options.
Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.
iPod/smartphone note: If you're going to use your smartphone with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for compatibility information.

Sony XAV-AX210SXM reviews
Bad software. I liked it at first, but then the software bugs started to show up. Radio station preset buttons lost their settings and the clock would randomly be off by strange amounts of time (not just even hours off) like 2 hours and 17 minutes for example. Then the next time I start the car, the clock and the stations might be right again.
Pros: I liked the knob for volume control
Cons: Bad software

Had to replace original radio and this one is so much better. Should have done it awhile ago. Sound is so much better.
Pros: Nice display. Easy to use.
Cons: Fit could be a little bit better

Basic yet modern
Pros: Still plays CDs, simple operation

Very happy with this stereo. Responsive screen and great CarPlay capabilities. With the iDatalink Maestro, the steering wheel controls still work on my Subaru Crosstrek. I would also recommend the Ready Harness because it made install a breeze.
Pros: Touch screen, CarPlay, steering wheel controls, retains use of factory backup camera

Let me start by saying that Crutchfield is hands down the best place to go for anything audio. I had several questions come up during the install and they were knowledgeable and extremely helpful. I gave this unit only 3 stars because even though its overall a very good unit there's a couple annoying things about it. I love the Android auto feature and all the options I have now for music. - can't turn off rear camera if none are connected, you have to cut the white/purple wire. So if in the future you want to add one you'd have to reconnect the wire. - it doesn't play DVD audio discs. Want to dump a bunch of your favorite albums or audio files onto a DVD and play it for hours of musical bliss? Nope, stupidly unsupported. - when scrolling through the 3 screens of saved Sirius stations it won't leave it on the station you're currently listening to, it reverts to the last station you last listened to on EACH screen. - do not use this unit without the vehicle running. It literally drained my battery during the installation and setup in about 15 minutes. Battery was fine before the install and after recharging.

So far I like it. It's going to an alpine amp so can comment on the power. Integration with the maestro was OK but couldn't get the existing vehicle mic to work. Touch screen is responsive. Wish there was a flash drive or 2nd USB/Aux input.
Pros: Easy install. Looks nice. Works well. Still has a CD player so you are not stuck listening to crappy Bluetooth audio from a phone
Cons: Needs another USB and would prefer a flash card reader or aux in too.

If you are buying this for the volume knob PLEASE GET SOMETHING ELSE. I am weird...but I like a volume knob. Seeing as how there is NO dedicated mute button and the mute function from the steering wheel does not work...having something to turn the radio down quickly is really helpful. And turning the volume up and down with the steering wheel controls is painfully slow. Thankfully it does tend to remember volumes for each input so I don't have to mess with it much to take calls. The display itself is ok...but how about the ability to customize it even a LITTLE bit beyond just adding a wallpaper? Who cares about a wallpaper....I want to actually get rid of the Sirius icon and maybe move some of the other stuff around. Resize the clock and maybe get a weather widget or something on the home screen. For this price range I really was expecting better. The accuracy of the touch panel is also crap. Don't plan on using it on the regular as it will have you wanting to rip it out and throw it out the window. sound wise its ok and seems to have decent functions. but as others have mentioned they seem to be fairly basic. I will probably get an dedicated cross over/EQ when I add amps and a sub. Also...a note about the install kit you guys sell. The plastic brackets in the Metra kit just aren't up to the task. I fabbed my own out of metal and they work so much better. The radio is held in place and doesn't jiggle in the dash.

First up, the startup. It takes probably 20-30 seconds to fully start up and recognize a bluetooth connection. The ATT button doesn't usually work very well and the volume knob is not nearly as sensitive as it needs to be. The settings menu. With various audio sources and myself listening to a large array of different music, it is a huge pain in the rear end to have to use the slider at the bottom, and then click 4 times to get to the subwoofer control. Going to be attempting to move the icons around (hopefully they are adjustable). The crossover controls are really simplified and offer no slope control. The subwoofer crossover cannot be shut off. The radio also didn't come with the standard metal cage for install and there are too few screw holes on the side to appropriately mount the radio. At this price point I was expecting a lot better.

Touch screen is very nice.. Great features that didn't break the bank. Apple play works flawlessly. Very crisp screen. Great sound over the stock unit with the built in EQ's. Biggest problem is what I have seen with other reviews with the video input screen popping up for now reason. Sony - I know I have no video because I didn;t plug any camera's in. Have not tried the fix yet but great unit for the price

Overall nice receiver! A cpl drawbacks though, nothing serious but noteworthy. First the screen isnt that responsive compared to the newer 5000 model with the capacitive screen, sometimes have to touch on something a cpl times. Also the startup time is still pretty slow which the new update made it A TON faster still I dont understand why I have to click the button everytime I start my car agreeing to the terms of whatever. Also we had to grind down some plastic around the volume knob to make it to where you could spin it somewhat freely, where it sits kind of inside the dash instead of flush, which is something they also fixed on the 5000 model. But the 5000 doesn't have a cd/DVD player or a volume knob so it's basically a trade off of what u prefer. Other than those points mentioned it's a really nice receiver. The display is nice and crisp even in direct sunlight. The 4volt output is nice running a subwoofer. Android auto works smooth. Hopefully they update the whole layout and some more functions with android auto soon ,its time but that's not on Sony. All the camera options is a added bonus, as well as the Sirius tuner. One other thing I really wish they would have done is to have the screen mirror option so u could play movies or YouTube videos on the screen instead of just having the sound play through it from bluetooth. But I'm happy with it. For the price and what ya get ya cant beat it honestly. Even though I pointed out cons there are far more pros so I'd reccomend
Pros: 4 volt, display, clean signal, volume knob, 3 camera inputs, a video output, android auto, apple CarPlay. Pretty decent EQ with sub control, phase, 10band, DSO, SXM ready. Plays flac files. Supports Waze and Google maps
Cons: No capacitive screen, no time alignment, doesn't sit flush, no screen mirroring

Amazing in dash with Android Auto. Hard to find a receiver that has Android Auto under $500?
Pros: Android Auto
Cons: My vehicle takes another $130 Interface to install it

I'm between 4-5 stars here. I like the screen (it is marginally smaller than some with a 7", but the resolution is the same so the text and images are very crisp and sharp). I love having the volume knob and track forward/back buttons on the front - makes it way easier for a passenger to control music, etc. But, the best feature is that it looks OEM - it doesn't look tacky like an after market stereo. Makes me smile whenever I get into the car - a 2013 Toyota Highlander :) Originally I would have given this 2 stars max. Here is why - when driving down the road, Android Auto would disappear and the head unit would switch itself to camera 2 or camera 3's input. But, I only have 1 camera hooked up (backup camera). This was annoying to say the least. I thought the unit may have been flaky / would have to go back (wasn't looking forward to tearing my dash apart multiple times). I updated the firmware from Sony's site - that seemed to make it a bit better - but not perfect. Finally, after searching forums, I found others who had similar issues and they fixed it by going into Settings -> Cameras -> and disabled (off) Camera 2 and Camera 3. Now, it works like a charm. I really like it, but c'mon Sony - really? Don't you test your stuff? Fortunately it was an easy enough fix - hopefully it is fixed for all without having to work around it with Sony's next firmware update.
Pros: Looks very clean, OEM like Volume knob Very sharp & clear screen
Cons: Finicky firmware

This head-unit has everything I wanted 2 years ago but didn't exist at the time. Multiple camera inputs, OBDII data, android auto etc.

I updated my factory radio because I wanted a backup camera and apple CarPlay. This unit performs as expected. It does take a few sec to turn on when I start my vehicle. It changes functions quickly with no lag time. Apple CarPlay works well. If you have iOS 12 you will have to enter the phone pass code before it will connect to the radio, after that it's good to go. You can turn that security feature off in your phone if you wish.
Pros: Ease of use.
Cons: Takes a few seconds (15-20 sec) to turn on at startup.

This is a very well thought out device. I installed this one in a 2011 Prius (no jbl) with a Maestro interface. It has worked with no problems and it is clear that the designers paid attention to details. For example, the display dims when headlights are turned on (the Jensen vx7024 I sent back did not), the home screen is well laid out and responsive, it switches between modes seemlessly even when Apple CarPlay is active, it instantly shows the reverse camera even before boot up, and it sounds excellent. I would buy this unit again.
Pros: Well laid out home screen, nice clean aesthetic design, responsive, gets the details right.

Android Auto: Thanks to Android Auto, you can connect your Android OS 5.0 (Lollipop) or later smartphone via a USB cable to the Sony receiver and operate many of the major functions of your Android phone through the Sony head unit's touchscreen. Get traffic information, lane guidance, and real-time navigation assistance from Google maps right from the Sony receiver. You can even send text messages, take calls, or check your voicemail through Android Auto and the Sony receiver. Android Auto also includes voice-recognition technology, so you can control everything just by speaking. Get directions, send messages, make calls, and control music while keeping your hands safely on the wheel.
- Google Assistant: The Sony receiver enhances your Android Auto experience even more by incorporating Google Assistant using the head unit's external microphone and your car speakers for voice command and text-to-speech, which makes using Android Auto and all of its integrated applications fast, easy, and safe. You will need to press the "mic" button or say "OK Google" to activate the Google Assistant. Use the Google Assistant to make a call, send a message, reply to a message, get driving directions, or listen to music.
- Google & Waze Maps: Use Google Maps to get where you're going with on-screen maps, voice-guided navigation, live traffic information, lane guidance, and more. Select your destination by using the head unit's touchscreen or just say where you want to go through the unit's external mic and Google Speech Technology. You can even listen to music from your Android Auto device or other connected source device while using Google Maps. If you prefer, you can switch over to a simpler version of the community-based Waze navigation app (version 4.27 or higher).
- Phone & SMS: With Android Auto you get access to your contacts and messages through the Sony receiver while keeping your eyes on the road. Use the unit's external mic and Google Speech Technology to make a phone call, or have your text-messages read aloud to you while you concentrate on the road ahead; you can even reply to texts via voice command.

You'll be able to browse music like you do on your smartphone with song/artist information display and album art. Use the receiver's touchscreen to select songs or just say what song you want to listen to through the head unit's external mic and Google Speech Technology. You also get access to online music and internet radio stations from Amazon Music Pandora, Spotify, iHeart Radio, Slacker Radio, & Tune-In. Music apps include song and station browsing, plus song/artist information and album art or station logo.
- Android smartphones with a USB Type-C connector (including the Pixel) may not function without appropriate USB Type-A to USB Type-C cable.
- Bluetooth hands-free phone cannot be used while Android Auto is being used with a connected Android smartphone. However, you can stream Bluetooth audio while using Android Auto's Google Maps.
- Use a USB cable that is under 6' long and avoid using any extension cable other than the one attached to the rear chassis.

Apple CarPlay: Use all your essential iPhone functions on the road, with Apple CarPlay and your iPhone 5 or newer (running iOS 7.1 or higher). Connect your phone via an Apple-certified Lightning-to-USB cable, and you'll see a familiar interface displayed clearly on the Sony receiver's touchscreen. Simply tap the icons to take calls, check voicemails and text messages, or bring up maps. And of course, listen to your favorite songs using iTunes, Apple Music, or select music apps. Apple CarPlay even lets you talk to Siri to control everything using voice commands. You can dictate text messages, control music playback, or get directions, without ever taking your eyes off the road.
- Maps: The power and simplicity of Apple Maps comes to your dashboard; complete with turn-by-turn direction, traffic conditions, and estimated travel time. You can enter a new destination or choose a favorite or recent destination using the head unit's touchscreen or by simply asking Siri. CarPlay can also predict where you most likely want to go using addresses from your email, text messages, contacts, and calendars. If you have iOS 12.0 or newer on your iPhone with the latest version of Google Maps or Waze (coming soon), you can choose to navigate via Google Maps or Waze instead of CarPlay. Google Maps and Waze do not support Siri voice control, but will have there own proprietary voice control function which has to be accessed through a touchscreen icon on the receiver.
- Phone & Messages: You'll be able to make calls, return missed calls, and listen to voicemails through the Sony receiver. Siri can also help you do all these things. In addition, Siri can send, read, and reply to your text messages for you; so you never have to look at your iPhone while driving.
- Music Library: Access your artists, song, playlists, and iTunes Radio on your iPhone using the Sony receiver's touchscreen. Or, just tell Siri what you'd like to listen to. The head unit's touchscreen will display song/artist information, as well as album art in the background.

- Apple CarPlay is compatible with iPhone 5 or newer running the latest iOS version.
- Bluetooth hands-free phone cannot be used while Apple CarPlay is being used with a connected iPhone. However, you can stream Bluetooth audio while using Apple CarPlay Maps.
Smartphone Charging: The Sony receiver's USB connection provides 1.5A of current to power and charge your connected iPhone or Android smartphone device when your vehicle's ignition switch is set to the 'ACC' or 'On' position. If your iPhone or Android device has no initial battery charge, then the unit will not recognize it.
USB Extension Note: The Sony XAV-AX210's USB port is attached to the rear-chassis via a 7" cable and comes with a 53" USB extension cable. Only use the included USB extension cable with an Apple certified Lightning-to-USB or Android-compliant USB cable when connecting your iPhone or Android device for CarPlay or AndroidAuto. Do not use any other USB extension cable and do not use 3rd party Lightning-to-USB or USB cables that are not Apple certified or Android compliant. Using other types of cables can result in CarPlay or Android Auto malfunction.

Once the call is finished, your streaming music will resume.
- Advanced Music Playback: In addition to basic playback functions (Play/Pause, FF/RW, Skip, Random/Repeat), the XAV-AX210 lets you browse your stored music by Playlist, Artist, Album, Song, etc. Advanced music browsing is supported by Android 4.0+ smartphones and Apple iPhones 5.0+ (specific advanced functions vary by phone).

- Peak Power Output: 55 watts x 4-channels (220 total watts)
Note: The power specifications for the Sony XAV-AX210 are compliant with the CTA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Technology Association (CTA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers.
5ch/4V Preouts+ Subwoofer Control: The XAV-AX210 contains five 4-volt RCA preouts; a front channel pair, rear channel pair, and mono-subwoofer channel. The front and rear channel preouts can be faded, while the subwoofer preout is non-fading. You can adjust the subwoofer preout's volume level (-10 to +10) independently from the head unit's volume control. You can also select the phase of the subwoofer output from Normal or Reverse.
Low-Pass & High-Pass Filter: The unit's subwoofer preout features a low pass filter with a selectable cut-off frequency of 50Hz, 60Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, or 120Hz. The front & rear speaker high-level and low-level outputs offer a selectable high-pass crossover frequency of 50Hz, 60Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, 120Hz, or Off.
10-Band EQ: You can select from a variety of preset EQ curves. Select from R&B, Rock, Pop, Dance, Hip-Hop, Electronica, Jazz, Soul, Country, Custom, & Off. The Custom EQ preset mode allows you to tailor the sound to your personal preference with its 10-band graphic equalizer. Cut and boost ten different frequencies (32, 63, 125, 250, 500, 1k, 2k, 4k, 8k, 16k Hz) from -10 to +10 for unlimited sound sculpting options.
Dynamic Stage Organizer (DSO): Sound waves are directional, so if your speakers are in your doors or under your dash, the audio may seem muddy or unclear. Dynamic Stage Organizer (DSO) adjusts the signal, improving the stereo positioning so music sounds like it's coming from the dashboard
ExtraBass: Activate ExtraBass at the touch of a button for an instant, low-end boost. Unlike conventional bass boosters, ExtraBass minimizes distortion at all volume levels by automatically adjusting frequency and gain to their optimal positions.
Beep Tone: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation (only when using the receiver's built-in amp). This function can be turned On or Off.
Video Output: A single RCA composite video-output jack allows you to an add external monitor, such as rear headrest or overhead monitor (sold separately). The video output can display a DVD or USB video signal when its selected as the receiver's source, regardless if the vehicle's parking brake is engaged or not. The Video Output does not support CarPlay or Android Auto.
Note: This unit is not equipped with an AV or Aux input.
3-Camera Inputs: The Sony XAV-AX210 is equipped with three composite video camera inputs to connect rear-, front-, and side-view cameras. You can toggle between the camera inputs. The rear camera input also offers auto-switching when your vehicle is put into reverse gear. The rear camera input also offers parking guide lines to assist you when backing up into a parking space.
- Parking Guide Lines: When a backup camera is connected and you are viewing a rearview image, parking guide lines appear on-screen making parking easy and safer. There are three color-coded horizontal guidelines. The parking guide lines can be customized to fit your type of vehicle better.
- Auto-Switching: When your vehicle's shift lever is in the reverse position, the screen automatically switches to the rear view camera input; the purple/white wire of the included harness must be connected to the vehicle's reverse lamp circuit for automatic video switching. Automatic video switching takes approximately 1.1 seconds. You can also manually select the rearview camera input from the head units touchscreen.
Note: The rearview camera feature is meant as a backup aid only; never solely rely on the rearview camera when backing up. In addition to using the rearview camera, always look behind you to make sure everything is clear when backing up your vehicle.

Note: The iDatalink Maestro RR is web programmable, which means you'll need to flash the iDatalink Maestro RR interface module with the correct firmware from iDatalink's website. In addition to flashing the iDatalink Maestro RR module, you'll also need a vehicle specific harness (sold separately). The Sony receiver's OEM Setup menu must also be configured with your compatible vehicle's factory system before initial operation.

While the vehicle is in motion (parking brake off), you can still enjoy CarPlay, Android Auto, & Bluetooth, as well as access audio adjustments.
3-Way Rotary Dial: In addition to touchscreen control, the Sony head unit features a 3-way rotary dial and push-button control along the left side of the front-panel.
