Love the simple, straight-forward design, and the overall improvement in sound quality over the factory head unit. Also love the capacitive touchscreen and CarPlay. I've only made a few calls using this unit, but audio quality on both sides of the conversation are clear.

Pros: Simple design, sound quality, capacitive touchscreen, CarPlay

Cons: As others have mentioned, it would be nice to have the option to load a custom background image.

I really like the interface on the Sony head units. Much less cluttered than other models. I have only three grips with this model - all of which coudl be corrected with a software upgrade... - the font for the clock at the top of each input is very small...tough to read while glancing away from the road. There's plenty of room, so I'm not sure why they did that. Clock on the front screen (that you see in the picture above) is rarely used, in practice. - on the FM tuner screen, the RDS data (that shows you the song title/artist) is only displayed 10 characters at a time. That makes it worthless while driving. Again, there was plenty of room, so I'm not sure why they did that. - finally, with regard to FM1, FM2 and FM3. You save 6 presets on each band. In every car I've ever owned, the next/prev buttons move between the presets *inside* each of the FM1/FM2/FM3--but not between them. When you press next on this head unit, it starts in FM1, then goes to the FM2 presets, and then on to the FM3 presets. I expected to cycle back to preset 1 when pressing next while on preset 6, in the same band. I tend to use each band for different geographical areas...so many of the presets don't even to tune to anything while I'm home. Anyway, it looks great and sounds great. I certainly am happy with the purchase. I bought the custom wire harness from Crutchfield, and it was worth every penny. And I'm an electrical engineer!

This is my first purchase from Crutchfield. The new Sony audio system is great. It has brought my older truck into the 21st century (see before & after photos). All the controls are easy to use and the sound is terrific. I used the HarnessReady service and it is well worth the $25, saves you lots of time.

Pros: Great sound, easy to learn controls, connected to my Android phone with Bluetooth and AndroidAuto with no problems

Cons: None so far.

Install was easy, but it needs a quick "off" button. On the factory (Toyota) radio this replaced I could reach over and tap the volume knob to quickly stop playback and shut everything off. I miss that in this unit. Stopping playback can take several taps, depending on what is on the screen at the time.

Excellent Android Auto unit, just missing a couple features

Andrew from Washington on 1/16/2020

2003 Toyota Sequoia

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

This unit is almost the perfect Android Auto unit! And despite all the reviews of people claiming it doesn't work with Android Auto, it actually works flawlessly. They probably don't have a decent USB cable. Let's start with the pros... it's insanely fast to boot. I'll do a video and capture the time soon, but it's in the range of 8 seconds or less, and that includes the warning screen that automatically dismisses! That means you don't have to touch the unit at all! And it'll auto launch into Android Auto too if you have your phone plugged in (and also auto launches when you plug in your phone later). The capacitive touch screen is also great and looks great. The unit operates quite well! It doesn't have wireless Android Auto, which would be nice to have for short trips around town, but I don't drive too often, so plugging in my phone isn't too big of a deal. The only con for me is it only seems to support one Bluetooth connection. That means my wife can't connect to play music in my car. Other units support dual Bluetooth. Another small con is that the unit isn't tiltable... in my car the stereo is pretty low, so it'd be nice to be able to tilt the unit up slightly. But oh well.

Pros: Super fast to boot Capacitive touch screen Automatically dismisses warning screen

Cons: Doesn't work well for two people - only one bluetooth connection

2012 Subaru Legacy

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Installed on a 2012 Subaru legacy, replacing the factory radio and Bluetooth unit. I also got the Axcess steering wheel control accessory. It is a single DIN unit with a double DIN screen. I am first time installer and the task was daunting initially. The pre-wiring service by Crutchfield made things easier.I also ordered all the recommended accessories and the Axcess steering wheel control. Crutchfield technical assistance is awesome. They patiently walked me through all the steps. I had to make several calls to be sure that I am making the right connections. Great builtin amp delivers better sound than my factory radio unit. Several presets for FM radio. Works right out of the box for iOS Car play. Had to power cycle it several times to get Android auto to work with LG ThinQ G7. No front usb slot. Has two rear usb connections, one for your phone and the other for music play through a usb device. Had to drill a hole next to the cigarette light adapter to plug a usb extender (bought separately) to make a clean looking install to connect my phone. The other"usb device" slot can be connected to the one in your center console through an adapter. But it can be used for a dumb usb device only. Remember to connect the supplied mic to the unit, the factory mic from Subaru becomes inactive after you install this.

Pros: Works great with iOS car play. Good in-built amplifier with EQ presets and controls Single DIM with double DIN screen gives ample space to tuck all the wires Sensitive mic that can pickup voices from rear seat.

Cons: No power on/off button. No front usb slot. No custom wall paper

Wire harness was really straight forward, and steering wheel controller works like a dream! The unit fits and works like a dream with way superior sound quality. Have to confess I ordered for the Car play and Android Auto though which both work flawlessly. My wife feels like we bought a brand new car! Had trouble finding the wire for the steering wheel controller and when I called Crutchfield for help I was blown away with how quickly a REAL PERSON answered and helped me find the right wire. What made it even easier was that I called from the number I setup my account with and the rep immediately knew what I had ordered without me having to say anything!! Seriously, the quality of support makes Crutchfield stand out from the competition. Don't even think about ordering from Amazon. Sure you might save a buck but you will be without the INSANE tech support.

Pros: Superior sound quality Super fast startup Ease of installation Amazing support

Cons: Had to spend a whopping 9 dollars on a soldering kit at Walmart because I wanted solid, long lasting connections. Dunno if that's a con though.

Horrible for Android Users / All around disappointed

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I really wish I researched more on the negative reviews related to android auto. It's horrible! It locks up constantly and disconnects my phone, and sometimes makes the radio volume go haywire. Android auto capability is one of the main reasons I bought it. Would not expect these issues from a radio that claims it supports android auto. Also, I paid for the Crutchfield ReadyHarness Service which was a total waste of money because I had to redo it to extend the wiring about 18" due to my car having factory navigation - which I identified to Crutchfield. Not sure what I want to do at this point... Really frustrated with the whole experience...

Pros: Does sound good

Cons: Don't buy for Android auto capability

PROS: -If you're not using an amp, this has a better built in amp than other comparable models. -The apple carplay works great; however, I have no other apple carplay models to compare it too. -The screen is really nice for a radio in this price range. Cons: (these aren't really cons, as much as things I wish were better) -When using sirius xm with the sv300 tuner, my previous JVC would record my presets up to an hour or more, this allowed me to pause live radio and skip around and not miss songs I like on each of the stations when on long trips. This radio does not do that. -While the screen is very sharp and smooth, when using the radio and sirius xm, sony does not utilize the potential of this screen to give you a better user experience. Only the very basic information is available and with smaller fonts, and this can't be altered.

Solid upgrade adding CarPlay

Crutchfield customer from Weaverville, NC on 1/3/2020

2005 Jeep Wrangler

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Installed in a 2005 Wrangler TJ. Sound is awesome. I did upgrade the speakers, amp, sub with my previous system. This added CarPlay, which works well-ish. The system screens transition quickly. CarPlay is responsive and changes between Pandora and Waze quickly. My issues: Reverse camera is slow to react 25% of the time. I shift out of and back into reverse (sometimes twice) and it works. Had to train myself to not put it in reverse before starting the Jeep - manual transmission habits are hard to break. Car play crackles until the unit is warm 1 out of 10 times. This makes troubleshooting difficult as I am in a hurry when it happens and cannot swap wires or tweak settings. Switching to radio stops crackle noise. Neither of these are annoying or frequent enough to make me not purchase the system again. This is my first Sony unit. Replaced a 6 y/o DD JVC System looks great. Screen glare is minimal even with the top down. Price point was on the mark. Called Tech support twice during install to make sure I was on track. Would never buy from anyone other than Crutchfield. Tech support is AWESOME.

Pros: Smooth screen and app transition. excellent sound

Cons: not quite perfect iPhone - CarPlay interface

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

In my Silverado I had the Sony MEX-XB100BT (bought from Crutchfield in 2016). For the holidays I thought I would splurge and by myself a new head unit so that I could install a backup camera. I was at a crossroads, do I buy the XAV-AX5000 or the XAV-AX7000. The XAV-AX7000 has the same built in high power amplifier that my MEX-XB100BT has, but has a screen. I like having all that power, but I ended up buying the XAV-AX5000 and adding the Sony XMS400D Amplifier. That was definitely the correct choice. The combination is loud and clear. In fact it's too loud, if that's a thing. Also buying the XAV-AX5000 and the XMS400D I saved $70.00 over buying the XAV-AX7000 alone. I think having the external amplifier installed makes all the difference. So if you're not afraid of installing the head unit and the amp, then I highly suggest that's what you do.

Pros: Loud and Clear Clear Screen Quick Booting Great with CarPlay

Cons: Limited wallpaper options

This radio was a much needed addition to a recent 2003 4Runner purchased used The radio was easy to install thanks to the folks at Crutchfield providing instructions, needed accessories and pre-wiring. Radio hooks up perfectly with Android auto or Apple via cable.. This radio does not support Apple wireless, which is not really an issue. We use Apple primarily and Siri is great for hands free calling, google maps and playlists. I installed an in-dash extension for the USB wires so they didn't have to dangle loosely. Provided microphone is very good and should be installed close to the driver. Touchscreen is responsive, but lacks the ability to customize the background beyond the five provided. I also installed a backup cam, which comes on by request or via the shift into reverse. Finding the reverse wire(backup) and em brake wire (video) were a bit easier due to Crutchfield identifying the color pattern and location specific to the 4runner. I did not install the Sirius radio. Overall, excellent radio.

Couldn't have gone better. Trevor (advisor) was very helpful during the ordering process. I had narrowed my choices down to three. We talked through the options, he pointed out the best option to meet my objectives. Further, after discussing the installation needs, the order was prepared for me with necessary/desired accessories. Delivery was on time and complete. Installation instructions were clear and straight forward. Personal installation went without a hitch. Crutchfield delivered on all aspects, superior customer service all around.

Wife loves it. Took about 3 hours to complete the radio installation, Crutchfield's wire crimping service is a big time saver. The radio boots up quickly and the touchscreen is as responsive as a modern smartphone. USB wires are probably overly long for most installations, and the manual says to not use an extension, so putting in a bulkhead-usb connector for a clean look was a bit of a challenge. I don't know what else to say that hasn't been said--buy this thing with Crutchfields installation accessories, put it in your aging car, and drive around an entirely new experience.

"Good", but not "Great"

Crutchfield customer from Haymarket, VA on 12/31/2019

Coming from factory set-up (which had no bluetooth and no smartphone connections, etc.), we were happy for this upgrade. However - this is NOT the same as the units that cost almost twice as much - there is a reason they cost more. Screen clarity is dismal (which was surprising, because I've generally had pretty good experiences with Sony screens on all types of devices). There is no way to adjust the "contrast" at all, and the only "brightness" adjustment is for when the unit is in night mode (when your headlights are on). Because of this, the screen image looks extremely washed-out in the daytime. This usually doesn't matter, but if you have your smartphone hooked up and you're using the screen for maps/navigation, it matters A LOT. It's very difficult to see even the most prominent map details. That said, the screen is quite serviceable at night time. Still not great, but pretty decent. If there was a way to adjust contrast for daylight viewing, it would help a ton. Regarding sound, I'm not sure whether the following is due to this head unit, the interface (PAC RAP4.2-TY11 Wiring Interface), my application (2006 Toyota Sequoia with JBL system - I retained the JBL amp - with Infinity Reference 6030cs front speakers [2 ohm speakers to match the factory JBL system specs]), or a combo, but radio and bluetooth volume is OK (not great - distorts at about 3/4 volume), while call volume is terrible (can barely hear even at 3/4 volume). Great features with "average" sound & view.

Pros: - Adds bluetooth, Android Auto, and Apple Carplay. - Radio and bluetooth sound is OK for most things. - Works well with Rerii 1M./3 Ft. USB and 3.5mm Aux Extension Mount. - Cheaper price (we got it on sale for less than 1/2 the price of other alternatives).

Cons: - Screen clarity is not good for daytime viewing. - Call volume is extremely weak (callers can hear you clearly, but it is difficult for you to hear them on your car speakers). - Not up to quality standards expected from Sony. - (See my other review for the PAC RAP4.2-TY11 Wiring Interface)

Great radio if you are looking for an Android Auto capable receiver

Matthew from HARRISON, TN on 12/18/2019

2007 Chevrolet Silverado (New Body Style

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I purchased this receiver to replace the factory radio in my Chevy Silverado. I could immediately tell a difference in the sound quality of my speakers. The Bluetooth functionality works well with my Samsung Note 9 as does the Android Auto. The voice quality is good through both Bluetooth and AA. The touch screen is very responsive and doesn't require a lot of pressure to register touch. I have had issues with factory radios that had Android Auto in the past and I was leery about performance on a aftermarket radio but I am very pleased with the response time and have no connectivity issues. It is also nice that I can customize which AA features are displayed. The only complaints I have are the screen is glossy so direct sunlight washes out the screen almost to point of making it unreadable and it would be nice if you could disable/hide sources that aren't used. I don't have XM radio and I won't be using the 2nd USB. My truck has steering wheel controls so I paired the radio with the PAC RP5-GM31 interface module and the SW controls were easy to program and function quickly and correctly with this radio. Another nice thing is even though this is a double-din radio, it only takes up the space of a single-din radio which gave me room to tuck the interface module in the extra space that is normally taken up by a normal double-din radio. I would definitely recommend this receiver to anyone looking for a double-din radio.

Pros: Compact installation in the dash Fast and responsive touch screen Very fast boot time at power up Android Auto is fast and responsive Voice quality is good with the supplied external microphone

Cons: Screen washes out with direct sunlight No ability to turn off or hide sources which aren't used. XM radio, 2nd USB, etc.

Runs like butter, great deck!

Crutchfield customer from Austin, TX on 12/18/2019

2005 Kia Spectra5

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Bought this deck during 2019 Black Friday, and am so glad that I took the plunge to purchase this. I've owned a Pioneer single DIN MP3 deck for 10 years, then switched over to a Kenwood Bluetooth DDX794 dual DIN deck for 2 years before purchasing this. Each of these other decks did the job fine, but never hit the target 100%. They were closer to 70%. The Sony is the first time that itch has been scratched, to about 98%. I think Sony made me a fan! I purchased the Sony XAV-AX5000 mainly for the Carplay/Android Auto feature after seeing my friend use it in his car. I use Google Maps a lot, and running it on this big screen than on my phone just rocks. Sound quality is wonderful as you would expect from Sony. The big surprise though, is just how buttery smooth the responsiveness of the UI is. Tapping a virtual button or scrolling is instant, like my phone. No lag like I had with my previous decks! I will also say that the ease-of-use of this deck is through the roof. Example, setting radio stations in my previous deck was a chore. The Sony in comparison is so easy. Scan for radio stations with a button press, then hold one of five virtual buttons to make it a preset. Voila. The only thing that doesn't make it 100% is that the Carplay/Android Auto is done via a wired connection to your phone. Kind of ruined my previous wireless setup with my phone in a wireless charging cradle, but the trade off for all these features are worth it. Highly Recommend.

Pros: Slick Sony UI Screen Responsiveness Crisp Audio Carplay/Android Auto on such a responsive screen

Cons: Carplay/Android Auto needs to be plugged into the phone and cannot be done via Bluetooth/wireless data transfer.

Excellent design - Worth the extra money!

Benjamin D from VALLEY, WA on 12/16/2019

2015 Subaru Forester

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Well laid out design, easy to use and loaded with features that similar touchscreen units don't have. The unit is compact enough to install into my Subaru Forester without fitment problems or running into issues with bulky cables pressed against the HVAC system behind the head unit. The steering wheel controls are easy to set up as it auto-configures, as well as an easy to use manual configure option where you can program every steering wheel button to do whatever you like all from the screen. The radio looks great once installed, the fit and finish couldn't be better and the sound quality is great as far as I can tell, better than the factory radio. Another advantage to this unit is that all the menus are well laid out and easy to navigate through . There was only one firmware bug that I can find after trying every feature available on this unit (all but CarPlay), which is that the volume/skip/seek finger gesture doesn't work as advertised. Turning the volume up or down requires finding the little buttons below the screen or using the steering wheel controls. Not a big deal in my case, but it could be handy for those who don't have steering wheel controls.

Pros: -Responsive screen (no lag or undetected touches) -Quick auto-connect to Bluetooth devices (around 10 seconds after it powers on) -Android auto works great as long as you use the cable your phone came with. It will auto-launch android auto as soon as you plug your phone in which makes it quick if you want to pull up your navigation or music without a hassle. -Easy to use and feature loaded firmware on this head unit.

Cons: -Limited customization options -You can only connect one Bluetooth device at a time -No Aux input -The volume & skip gesture controls on the screen do not work as advertised, and you have to press the volume buttons otherwise which takes a while to turn the volume up/down. Wish they found a way to incorporate a volume knob or thumb wheel like the older units did.

Great unit. This was my first radio install. Slight dash modification to an 02 excursion to be able to install this system. With Crutchfield instructions, installing this Sony was pretty straightforward and relatively easy. Love the radio. It has a stronger receiver than the oem radio- pulling in stations farther away and more clearly. Controls are intuitive. Apple car play works great, as does the hands free phone features. Changeable wallpaper allows selection of a dark background which keeps the screen from being a distraction for night driving.Very happy with this purchase and install. Looks/sounds great!

Pros: I really appreciate that this screen can be set so that it is not too bright/a distraction for night driving. I had to select the black wallpaper, which works fine for me. There are other color backgrounds (blue, green, red and yellow I think) but I hadn't found a way to dim them. I don't know that you can't dim them, I just stopped looking once I realized the black background worked for me.

Cons: Haven't figured out the con yet.

This unit made a large improvement in sound even with my terrible 15 year old speakers in my 2004 F150. The ready harness was well worth the extra cost in the hassle and time it saved. I did do a custom USB mod replacing the cigarette lighter using a part not from Crutchfield however the directions on how to pull the dash apart were perfect for this as well.

Pros: Cleaner sound with much more power than the factory stereo. Apple Carplay works great. The install kit made it look as though this was from factory. Ready harness made this a breeze.

10 stars!

Barry from TELFORD, PA on 12/15/2019

2008 Honda Pilot

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

This 'head unit' is all I ever wanted in a car stereo. I am extremely picky when it comes to sound and I learned years ago NOT to shop by reading the specifications of a piece of equipment. I have had several Sony 'head units' over the last thirty years. They have outperformed their competition in sound quality and features. The XAV-AX5000 is the first 'head unit' I purchased without hearing it. I trusted the Crutchfield reviews and that coupled with my past experience with Sony allowed me to step out in faith and buy this unit. It works totally as advertised.I use both USB ports, one for my iPhone or a thumb drive and the second for a thumb drive (drives must be formatted FAT32. In windows, use the DISKPART utility to format the drives. On USB1, music and videos (MP4) play flawlessly. (Videos must be formatted to maximum 1280 × 720 resolution). Hands free phone and even hands free texting work very well. Apple CarPlay sometimes doesn't come up when I connect my phone via the USB cable. I usually just have to unplug the USB cable and plug it back in and it works fine. Only once did I need to reboot my phone to make ApplePlay work. I can use my WAZE navigation APP on the phone and the maps are displayed beautifully on the spacious screen. I am using the XAV-AX5000 with JL Audio Amps, so I can't comment on the 'sound' of the self-contained amplifiers. But the best word I can use for this unit with regard to sound is TRANSPARENT. I would rate it 10 stars if I could!

Pros: Very Versatile: 2 USB Ports, Bluetooth plays from my phone and handles my phone calls as well! Several background choices. Preset and custom Equalizer. Subwoofer On / OFF and volume control. Interfaces with steering wheel controls via accessory adapter. Apple Car Play enables me to use Waze, Audible (Audiobooks app) Phone, voice messages and text messages while driving. Even SIRI works with supplied microphone. Backup camera is crystal clear.

Cons: I needed to buy a new backup camera because the old camera would not interface with the Sony unit. (The hassle and cost were far offset by the stellar performance of this unit.) The only dash adapter available from Crutchfield was far too small. That adapter was meant to be used to mount the Sony lower in the dash; replacing the CD changer. BUT Crutchfield's knowledgeable staff gave me the name of an alternate manufacturer that made an adapter that fits perfectly where the old GPS was.

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I got this for my '04 Honda Element to give it some new life. I wanted a head unit that was minimal in its look and would appear almost stock. The Sony XAV-AX5000 was the perfect fit. It doesn't have an endless amount of functionality but what it does do it does well. I mainly use it for Android Auto. So far I have not encountered any connection problems that plague some other Android Auto users. A key factor is the cable you use. I purchased a 6' USB 3.0 to USB-C cable from Anker and am using my Pixel 2XL. The Sony's touch screen is responsive, but I might consider an anti-glare protective layer. Assistant voice commands and phone calls come through well. I have the microphone positioned above my head on the rear-view mirror. The USB port on the Sony is on the back so I did have to run the cable through some paneling to get it into a nice position in my center console. The Metra Dash Kit that came from Crutchfield was unusable. Instead I purchased SCOSCHE HA1701B that was a nearly flush mount. All in all a great head unit!

Pros: Minimal Design, Large Capacitive Screen, Android Auto

Cons: Metra Dash Kit

I installed this in a 2018 Toyota Corolla. Works Great. I got it so I can have apple car play. Only issue I have is that people say they have a hard time hearing me on phone calls, they say it breaks up a lot. Cant figure out if it the microphone position or the head unit it self.

Pros: Apple Car Play runs super smooth.

Cons: Microphone Issue, Wish it had more customization options for home screen.

So far, so good. Also got the recommended Crux harness and Metra faceplate. Wiring took about 45 minutes to complete. Removing the old unit took about 20, and installing the new took about an hour - to add microphone that came with the radio. Had to figure out A pillar removal and running wire. New unit looks good (passes wife test) and the features are easy to use and straightforward.

Pros: CarPlay- separate volume for music and nav apps. Tuner is good. Connection process good

Cons: No AUX input connector. No HD radio option.

I bought this for my friends Tacoma and did the installation myself, it was so easy and had no issues. The screen size and dimensions were a perfect fit and made my friends Tacoma look even better inside. The sound quality is amazing and the rear camera is Crystal clear. The apps are very fast and syncing the phone to it was really fast and easy. The one thing I love about this product is that it syncs to your phones Google play and maps without a hassle. I would definitely recommend this to anyone that wants both iPhone and Android sync play and best sound on the market.

Pros: Installs Easy Sound Quality Fast running apps Syncs with iPhone and Android Google Maps is awesome Volume Level exceeds ecpectations

Cons: Wiring can be confusing Make sure you have the right lot to install

Overall, this is a great replacement for the factory radio in my 2012 Toyota FJ. I have the JBL w/ subwoofer and the Sony along with a PAC RP4.2-TY11 kept all features in tact. The only thing I had to do in addition to plug-n-play was splice into the backup camera feed, which was pretty easy. Only drawback is that the contrast is a bit washed out and I haven't found a way to adjust it.

Pros: Easy install and retained all factory features

Cons: Lack of contrast adjustment.

This unit fits the bill. I chose this one because of the simplified interface. I didn't want to swipe through a million screens or have settings buried under layers of useless options. I also replaced all my speakers in my 05 Titan with Kicker door speakers and a 12" Kicker sub and it sounds amazing. The touch screen is responsive and it integrates with my dash really well. Crutchfield had the best price on this unit and it arrived quick. The only extra I wish this unit had would be HD Radio, but that wasn't a deal breaker for me.

Pros: Simplified UI, responsive touchscreen.

Cons: Custom wallpaper option would be nice but not a big deal for me. No HD Radio.

2012 Subaru Forester

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I purchased this Sony XAV-AX5000 because other reviewers liked the quality of the screen and the Carplay connectivity. Those two things are indeed positives with this head unit, unfortunately the negatives detract from an otherwise nice, mid-range aftermarket stereo. The PROS: This unit really boosts the sound quality of the OEM speakers and amplifier in my 2012 Subaru Forester. The screen is very nice -- clear, bright, very responsive touch capability. The icons are large and easy to navigate. Some users complained about the lack of wallpaper themes and boring main screen appearance, but I actually really like the simplicity of it. The CONS: The USB2 connection on the head unit is for your Carplay or Android Auto devices. This works fine. The USB1 connection is for other connections like mass storage devices, music players, etc. Thus far, I've gotten nothing to work on it, not an iPod Touch, not an iPhone, not a Galaxy 8. It is pretty much a worthless USB port that might work with a USB thumb drive/mass storage device, but little else. Another con is the Bluetooth. There is no voice command function with BT on this device. I don't expect wireless Carplay/Android Auto with a HU at this price point, but basic BT functionality would be nice. There is also no ability to change between paired BT devices from the HU. You must disconnect/reconnect from the device(s) instead. Overall, its a decent deck, but could be much better. Will stick with Pioneer next time

Pros: Nice screen, large icons, easy to navigate menu, solid connectivity to Carplay and Android auto through USB, very good sound when connected to Carplay or Android Auto

Cons: (in descending order of importance to me) Neither USB connection works with a simple audio player like iPod Touch, no voice command with Bluetooth connected phones, unable to easily switch between multiple paired Bluetooth devices, no Aux in.

I suppose if you have either a bare-bones factory sound system or a complete aftermarket system this receiver would be okay. I installed in a 2012 Chevy Silverado LTZ which did not have a navigation display but does have the BOSE speaker system. Design-wise, the unit looks clean, as far as aftermarket receivers go, and looked decent where the radio stack once was. The user interface is not pretty, but it's also not ugly and was fairly responsive in navigation. While it is an aftermarket unit, the hard buttons are too small and not intuitive. This is, unfortunately, the high point of the review. The unit bypasses the factory amp- so unless you plan on replacing this, expect the sound to be hollow and flat, as if the speakers are being pressed up against a megaphone, or being played through a paper towel roll. I sampled classical, opera, EDM, R&B and talk radio and found the same to be true for all genres. The unit does not provide richness depth and range to the sound it emits. In fact, because it bypasses the factory amp, even the seatbelt/door chimes come out overmodulated. If you do not install an aftermarket bass & amp- the amp on the unit will play out sound into the dash, bypassing the factory amp. This isn't the most expensive unit, but I would expect far better quality from a marquee electronics brand like SONY. I'm returning mine and going back to the factory radio...

Pros: Fairly clean looking unit, for aftermarket Would look decent in most dashboards/radio stacks Decent UI, pretty responsive touchscreen

Cons: Poor sound quality - flat and colorless Requires more than just good speakers to achieve good sound Hard buttons are very small Hard button layout/mapping is not intuitive

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I was in a market for a semi-affordable Android Auto head unit for my 2009 Honda Civic. I wanted something with a capacities touch screen, and not too pricey based on the vehicle age. At first glance, this head unit seems like a great fit! It has a responsive, capacitive touch display, and the menus are very clean and modern looking, unlike many of the competitors, whose clunky UIs look like something out of year 1999. I also liked the hardware buttons for volume, skip, quick settings and voice search. Unlike many others, I did not experience any issues with Android Auto disconnecting. I used the Beuler USBD-Kit Dual USB Port and a quality USB-A to USB-C data cable, no issues. However, this is where the positives end. The unit supports only the absolute minimums. Sony is not releasing software updates to address the many complaints and issues related to this unit. Some of the issues I experienced: - No screen brightness control (can only adjust the "dimmer" level). Screen only 480P. In 2019. - Screen too dim/low contrast to see on a sunny days, despite tinted side windows - Reverse camera view getting stuck with no ability to exit out (had to switch to reverse again, and then back to drive) - Ridiculously long USB cables out of the box, which cause issues for many people due to over USB length - Barebone EQ. No time alignment. - AAC and video files only supported on USB1, which you need for Android Auto/Car Play. - No album art or FLAC tags

Pros: Responsive Capacitive Touch Screen Very quick boot (few seconds)

Cons: Low resolution screen with inadequate contrast/brightness Limited file format support on USB2 No album art or FLAC tags Unable customize the home screen (e.g. remove the SXM icon, load custom background). No HD radio support. No GPS antenna. Unreliable backup camera operations. Lack of updates/improvements from Sony. Customer forum full of undressed complaints.

This is a great deck for anybody looking for a clean setup. It is by no means very customizable, you'll get more out of a pioneer deck, but no radio I've ever owned has came close to the simplicity and great looks of this deck. The capacitive screen is great feeling, but by no means hdr or high def. The fact that it mounts as a double din, but has the body of a single din gives you plenty of room to tuck all those ugly wires you threw together under the deck in the dash. Apple car play works pretty good, is very responsive, but I have had to reconnect my lightning cable a few times to get it to connect right. But if you dont have the patience to reconnect a cable a few times here and there, you probably shouldn't have a radio in your car lol. This Sony deck makes up for the couple areas it lacks, I'd definitely recommend it.

Pros: Simple, clean, responsive, CarPlay

Cons: CarPlay has a couple bugs

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

So far so good. I could tell an immediate improvement in sound quality vs the factory radio I've been living with for 12 years in my Toyota 4Runner. Screen is crisp and clear. Apple CarPlay fired right up....Android Auto for my wife's phone works great as well. Buttons are intuitive. While two USB cords are integrated with the unit, it appears that USB 2 is only useful for connecting USB memory stick for music. Have not yet tried to see if that cord will provide charging to a second phone. Thankfully I called for technical support during the install and the adviser informed me that the parking brake wire needs to be connected as Android Auto requires parking brake to be set when pairing for the first time. Don't be afraid of the open box deals...I saved a few dollars and as far as I could tell, the only difference vs. factory sealed is that someone had removed the protective film from the screen. Hey, that saves me deciding when to remove it...I'm bad about keeping the protective film on devices for a year. I think I inherited this trait from my father.

Pros: Sound quality noticeably better than factory. Supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto...and both work well. Screen is crisp and clear. Excellent fit and professional appearance with Crutchfield supplied adapters.

Cons: Screen is fairly smooth and therefore there is some reflection that occurs in the daytime. Between the reflection and polarized sunglasses, there are times it is difficult to see.

I previously owned the Alpine ILX-W650 and this unit is very much worth the additional money. The touchscreen is responsive and does very well avoiding fingerprints. The features are not overwhelming, just enough to tweak what you want. Dual USB is a bonus, and it worked perfectly with the factory rear view camera thanks to the wiring harness. I really like the modern home screen...it's minimalist but familiar without crazy bells and whistles, animated backgrounds, or outdated pixel fonts. The only negative for this unit in my opinion is the hardwired USB cords, I would have preferred USB Ports on the back of the unit to customize the installation rather than running hardwired cables through my dash.

Pros: Great price, minimalist style, gorgeous screen, full feature set.

Cons: Hardwired USB cables force routing bulky USB cords throughout the dash to have access to USB features.

I did a lot of research before I bought this radio. It still didn't prepare me for the disappointment. I wanted dual USB with Android Auto and a decent screen size. It seemed to check all the boxes. My overall plan was using the one USB port for my iPod and the other for my smart phone. Well this unit isn't really compatible with any iPod, I have an iPod Touch and an iPod Class Video neither works with it. I ended up using a USB but even that's a disaster because you can only have 255 folders on the USB. Might seem like a lot but the artist is one folder, each album is another. It disappears quickly. I went from having a massive music library on my iPod to almost nothing on my USB. The Android auto is awesome when you can keep it connected, I've tried the factory wire that came with my phone, bought a new one, bought another aftermarket, it's hit or miss. Save you money and get a Kenwood.

Pros: Android Auto Screen Size Dual USB

Cons: Everything else

Looks great! Was pretty easy to install. I used the free dash kit that came with the radio and it fits perfectly. I have a 2009 Pontiac Vibe. I added a picture of the radio and a picture of where I installed the microphone. I clipped the microphone in the ceiling fabric/cover but had to add a small piece of plastic in the form of folded tape into the clip which is inside of the cover unseen since the clip was a tiny bit loose. Easy fix! Very happy with the purchase!

This is a good bang for your buck stereo. Good looking head unit with large screen, minimal glare, good sound quality, good responsiveness to touch, fast function changes including reverse camera, quick start up with minimal load screen, and immediate shift to reverse camera if you need it, plenty of radio presets, good functionality on Bluetooth, and two USB ports for CarPlay or Android Auto. It's a little limited in terms of frills, but if you are buying a headset that has CarPlay or Android Auto, that's where your frills are located anyway

Pros: Large screen, attractive unit, quick loading, good response to touch, two USB ports, easy and intuitive access to CarPlay or Android Auto.

Cons: User interface isn't very intuitive. Limited wallpaper options, simple and limited equalizer options. It's pretty basic, but if the plan is to spend most of your time in your phone's car user interface, this is an excellent option. Great quality functionality for the price.

During my last purchase, I ordered an un-needed product to interface with my steering wheel controls and when the order arrived they had put a sticky note on that product stating "this is not needed and you should return it unused for a refund:. what else can I say but thanks for your efforts.

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Installed this head unit in my 2018 Toyota Tundra (Double Cab) and it's a great product. Apple CarPlay works seamlessly. Purchased the separate adapter (ReadyHarness) to ensure that my rear view camera and steering wheel controls worked (and most of the steering wheel controls work - not all, but that is not a fault of the Sony). The ReadyHarness made connections easy. I replaced all speakers in the car, installed a 4-channel amp (Sound Ordinance) to power the speakers, and put a JL Audio Stealthbox in the back (powered by a JL JX/1000). Hookups with the Sony were very easy. Menus are easy to navigate, touch panel technology is great. I love that I can pull up Waze maps on the unit. So far, it's been a great purchase. I would definitely recommend.

Pros: Easy to install, plenty of room behind the unit to "tuck" wires in, Apple CarPlay is simple to use and does it's job.

Cons: I would love for the album artwork to show up on the screen during music playback. But it was not worth paying hundreds more for another unit just to look at the album cover.

We replaced the stock radio in our Silverado with this Sony XAV-AX5000 to allow the addition of a back up camera, use of our Android phone's navagation system and apps. We also purchased the steering wheel control module for safe hands free use of our Android phone. The radio install took some time, but was not complicated. The touch screen works perfectly, the display clearly depicts our Navigation App and backup camera's imagery. The sound is excellent quality. It meets our expectations for quality and functionality. We would definitely recommend this model.

Pros: Android Auto enabled, use of phone apps such as Waze and Pandora, displays clear back up camera imagery, simple to operate, well lit display

Cons: Installation takes time because you have to connect all the wires carefully.

Only JEEEE-ZUS gets Five Stars but this little baby gets real close. I have it coupled to my iPhone X. Screen is elegant and easy to read. Functions are easily figured out. I use it for XM/Sirius, phone, Spotify, radio and Waze. The real surprise is the amplifier section. It has about 10wpc more than the Kenwood head unit it replaces and makes my tunes come very much alive. It distinctly sounds better than my old unit and makes driving to loud music a great, big, buzz.

Pros: Thoughtful design, glorious sound.

Cons: dangling USB connectors

At first, I thought the screen was a little bit small after viewing the 9" of the car stereo online. However, I realized the actual screen on that 9" screen was not as it said. It was smaller than this screen of Sony car stereo. After the installation, controler worked, carplay worked, the reaction was fast. Everything I want was perfect! Really highly recommend this product for Honda CRV. Also, the tools Crutchfield provides and the manual were great for me!Very appreciate the Crutchfield team! Overall 100 stars!

I put this in my '03 Tahoe. I was pressed on time as I wanted to have in place before I went on vacation. I opted to have Crutchfield prewire it, something that would have been easy but I was indulging myself. The installation was easy, almost as simple as plug and play. I did run into a problem getting the factory steering wheel controls to work so I called their support. As crazy as it sounds I got a REAL person on the phone that sounded like a real live American. Turns out I overlooked plugging the jack in the back for the controls. It was easy. The learning curve to get the most out of this thing was negligible. Within minutes I was streaming music from both USB ports, I BT connected it, I made calls etc. There is the ability to have a back up camera on it too, but I didn't opt for that though I may consider it. The sound is nice and breathes a little life back into the old Tahoe. I can use Google assistant and Google maps display on the screen. Overall, easy installation, easy use and all the features I wanted.

Pros: easy use and installation

Cons: there's an additional jack for the steering wheel controls, but thats minor

I bought this unit when I downgraded vehicles to reduce my car payment but still wanted all of the features of the car I sold. Not only does it not disappoint, it's above and beyond what I had before! Great interface, very functional voice recognition, intuitive controls, great sound...I really couldn't ask for much more! If I were to have a complaint it would be that the wallpapers aren't customizable (I'd love to be able to create a more factory look with the splash screen), but that's a minor quibble. The wiring service from Crutchfield was also a game changer, making this a much simpler install than when I've done the connections myself.

Pros: Great design and interface Lots of features

Cons: Can't customize wallpapers/splash screen

The jury is still out on this. I have had issues with CarPlay that I can't resolve. I think it is a pretty good radio but not perfect. To be fair, this is the only double Din aftermarket radio that I have bought, so I don't know if other brands are better.

I saw other reviews stating they could not get Android Auto to work. I had the same problem until I bought a $9 Belkin USB cable and stopped trying to use the $2 cables I had been using to charge my phone. Instantly solved my "USB Device Not Supported" errors. Unit is fast and easy to use. Interface is simple and responsive. Backup camera works great, comes on when I put the car in reverse. Has adjustable parking lines. Sadly screen is glossy and not as bright as it should be so it is very hard to see on bright days. Would have liked a few more settings, but since this is a fairly affordable unit for what it is I am not too upset. The first one I got was bad, totally died in a few days. Crutchfield was great to work with and got me a replacement quickly and easily. Recommend them to everyone.

Pros: Improved sound over factory system Android Auto Bluetooth

Cons: Screen glare is excessive. Few settings No custom wallpaper

I bought this from Crutchfield and it's Awesomeness. The touch screen response is the best on a stereo under 1000 bucks. The sound quality is good. The installation is standard for aftermarket stereos. The Android auto only works without losing connection IF you use a 6" to 1 foot usb type c or micro usb cable. My real knocks are the unit should include a new smartphone connection cable USB c and micro USB or it will continuously lose connection and the lack of customization with back ground picture and UI icons

Pros: Touch screen is very responsive. It is like using a tablet

Cons: Special kind of connection cable needed for for good connection for Android auto

Great Touch Screen Stereo - Android Auto Needs Improvements.

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I installed this in a 2012 Chevy Impala. I got all the accessories that Crutchfield recommended to keep my steering wheel controls and On-Star functionality. I used Crutchfield's ReadyHarness Service which made it as easy as unplugging my old Kenwood stereo and plugging in my new Sony XAV-AX5000. This is a great stereo if you listen to music from your phone. The bluetooth works great and sounds great. The latency using bluetooth is low too; when I go on roadtrips with my friends, they will sometimes connect their phone through bluetooth to watch movies and TV shows with the audio playing through the car speakers and the video through their phone and the audio and video will stay in sync with each other unlike my old Kenwood stereo. I bought this stereo mainly for the Android Auto functionality, but boy has this part been a nightmare. Before finally finding the proper USB cable to use with my Android Auto, I used to get constant disconnects and the Android Auto interface would reboot or either not start back up at all. I've been reading that the reason for this is mainly because of the length of the USB cord that already comes attached to the stereo. The shorter the cable, the more stable the Android Auto connection will be. Also, you ABSOLUTELY need a high quality USB cord, and Anker is the best brand for this. I've been using Anker's 4 inch micro USB cable (B01NAMTC5T on Amazon), with Anker's micro to USB-C adapter (B01AHLKG0K on Amazon) without disconnects.

Pros: -Sleek look in my car. -Sound is great. -Looks almost as good as a stock stereo when installed. -Great Bluetooth latency and functionality. -Backup camera works great with this unit.

Cons: -Low customization. (Can't change wallpapers, can't change homescreen icons, etc.) -Android Auto needs work. (Buy Anker's 4 inch micro USB cable (B01NAMTC5T on Amazon). If you have a USB-C phone, buy Anker's micro to USB-C adapter (B01AHLKG0K on Amazon); because Anker does not have a USB-A to USB-C cable this short for whatever reason)

Installed Ina 2013 Subaru WRX to replace the stock bass head unit. I picked up all the recommended accessories from Crutchfield and they were valuable for the install. The install was smooth and the product has delivered. Andorid Auto was a must for me so this Sony was on the short list. I did not end up using the backup camera or Sirius receiver slot but I run Sirius through Android Auto just fine. For the install, I did have a plan to ensure there was sufficient space given the extra wiring I run with guages, so keep that in mind if relevant. The supplied wiring harness was a massive time saver, so I highly recommend that. As far as sound goes, this head unit has really made the stock speakers and underpowered Subaru sub sound much much better. It feels like there is sufficient power to not need amplified speakers for now, but it does push the stock tweeter a little far when at high volume, so I'll likely change those out soon. After a few weeks with this unit, I can definitely say I'm very pleased with it and the support provided. Thanks Crutchfield!

Pros: Attractive, sleek, fast, and great sound.

If you are getting this receiver to use Android Auto with it DO NOT BUY IT! Multiple users of this stereo have reported an issues with it connecting with Android phones and Sony has no solution whatsoever. This is seriously one of the worst purchases I have ever made. It constantly will connect to android auto then about a minute later it will disconnect saying that the device is not supported. I am so angry at Sony and Crutchfield for even offering such a defective product. It's not just me it is a widespread issue and Sony has no answers for it. Shame on you Crutchfield for for not warning users with androids about a well known non-fixable issue.

Very disappointed with Sony and I really like their products. I bought this unit purely for it's compatibility with Android Auto. But if you are buying this unit for the same purpose, I will give you a piece of advice, don't buy this system for Android Auto. It is extremely glitchy, I get numerous gray pixelated screens and restarts. Also it doesn't alway recognize my phone as a compatible device and I have a new galaxy s10. Additionally this is my second unit, I returned the first one thinking it was defective, nope that's just how it is with this unit. Do yourself a favor and hard pass on this unit and buy something different, I really regret buying this product!

Pros: Large screen. Android Auto and Apple Carplay compatible.

2015 Subaru Forester

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I used a professional shop to install this HU and some Focal component speakers into my 2015 Subaru Forester 2.5i, replacing the stock 6-speaker non-HK system. The Sony is everything I wanted: simple, uncluttered interface with physical volume controls; a second USB port for permanent connection of a flash drive; Android Auto that works seamlessly; non-flashy, factory-installed appearance; a big, bright(-ish), responsive, (mostly) glare-resistant screen; excellent sound quality with internal amps only. (Note that USB 1 and 2 have different functionality for sorting files; check the manual.) I didn't care much about radio reception, although it turns out the Sony vastly outperforms the OEM Clarion. I will never subscribe to Sirius. I don't use the phone much when I'm in the car, but the Sony works fine with my OnePlus 6. The included microphone (installed at the top of the mirror stem) offers better call quality than the Subaru mic did. All of my steering wheel controls work as they did before, and the backup camera signal is now duplicated on the Sony screen and the original MFD screen. Bluetooth connection is reliable and consistent. I don't miss the Aux input or the optical drive, which I never used anyway. There are more feature-rich units at this price point, but few if any with that second USB port (which can be used as a music source while still using Android Auto for nav, btw.) I'm happy.

Pros: Great Screen; Snappy Interface; Two USB Ports; Fine Audio Quality; Android Auto Works (as well as it can)

Cons: USB 2 is less functional for managing large drives full of music, yet only USB 1 can be used for AA/CP.

Just ok

I'll start by saying this receiver is just ok. I plays media from bluetooth and/or USB as expected and I added the XM module which works fine, and are mainly the features I wanted in a head unit at this price point. I did want to add navigation eventually though, so since it also advertised Android Auto, I expected that feature to work but it just doesn't. It "sort of" works, but constantly disconnects, freezes the unit and reboots it, and/or says my phone is not supported. I should have read some other reviews before purchasing this unit as many other people have the same issue and apparently Sony doesn't seem to care to fix it. So ok, I'll just buy the add on navigation module I thought. Alas, Sony discontinued it and it is not available anywhere! So now I'm basically stuck with this unit with no navigation features since I'm not spending more hours removing it, purchasing something else and reinstalling it. For music, bluetooth and XM though it's fine. Nothing special though; it doesn't even display album art. I also connected a backup cam and that works well. If I had done more research first though, I would not have purchased this unit for what I wanted.

Great Screen, That's About It

I really wanted to like this unit. I loved the gorgeous 7" captive screen, the clean and simple UI and the physical sleekness of it. I didn't want a ton of features I'd never use, but I was surprised at how few features there were and also at how poor the Sirius radio performed. This doesn't work with Maestro's steering wheel modules and I couldn't port controls easily into my 2014 Subaru Forester. We tried using the radio's built in software to do this but it wasn't up to the task. If you enjoy SiriusXM this is not for you. The interface was buggy and presets lagged big time. It was very inconsistent going from station to station. And you can't directly dial in a channel number. I was sad to return this. The lack of customization and poor Sirius performance was too big an issue for me. Sony makes great screens. Maybe that's what they should stick to.

Pros: Beautiful screen, simple user interface

Cons: Lack of customization, poor Sirius performance, trouble mapping steering wheel controls, no Maestro support.

While this comes with 2 usb connectors there is no aux jack. I knew this, however, what I didn't know was how few songs register on the menu when using a flash drive. I found it would play all songs on the drive while set to random, but wouldn't show them all in the menu when searching for artists. Also, the screen does not scroll it pages and is very slow. You are better off using an ipod to search as it's quicker and safer. I called Sony and they informed me it only registers the first 250 files or song on the flash drive and the menu only pages no scrolling. Other than those issues it is an decent radio, but those issues are deal breakers for me.

Pros:

Cons: Poor song searches Only recognizes the first 250 files in a usb drive. Can't hook up iPod.

Very nice, responsive screen, refined interface. Small enclosure makes for easy mounting. Steering wheel control integration is somewhat lacking. Sound at moderate and high volume is good, low volume sometimes sounds gated. I mounted this item tipped slightly back to match the dash angle in my outback. Unsupported mounting option, but dramatically better than the downward facing look that normal mounting would have given me. Brightness levels cover all lighting levels well, I often find that the dimmest setting is not dim enough for nighttime driving. Screen easily blacks out if you like it even darker.

Pros: Clean, simple, classy, not cluttered. Good button and menu layout. Apple Carplay feels almost native. Good screen, good backup camera integration.

Cons: No knobs, and physical buttons are rather small. Limited features. Steering wheel integration options are currently preventing me from using some of my convenience buttons.

A second attempt after two years of reviewing these. After a brief ownership with Pioneer, I purchased this Sony as I could employ Apple CarPlay. First impressions from a discriminating buyer: receiver does not allow direct dialing of XM channels. There is no bass/treble. Adjust the eq only. Meh. In XM Mode: one has to tap the plus or minus or go find a genre in settings. Most annoying: the CLOCK does not keep time! it cycled 4 times during a 5 hour driving period yesterday! I found Apple Car play did keep time; (can't it update the receiver?) The Level/volume of calls is unpredictable (either way up or away down) forcing constant adjustment of volume, and the volume of text message sent (whooo-oop) will blow your ears..way too loud! Sony needs to find a way to control the volume of Imessage. Is there a FLASH or UPDATE? On FM Sensitivity: signal gathering= fair. On sound shaping= fair. On mounting the unit I'll say, 'weak' with fixtures provided for those retrofitting into older vehicle. On unit lighting: the unit dims (w/lights on) ; but does not adjust with vehicle dashboard rheostat. Overall I'll call this one 'sat' at best with its weak ways. I'm on the fence with it, however Crutchfield as always, Rocks! Fast delivery and stellar Tech Support.

Pros: Crutchfield support

Absolutely incredible and everything I expected. I use Android Auto with a non-OEM USB-C cable. Radio processes AA super fast and never skips a beat. Audio sounds fantastic with little to no distortion at low or high volumes on my 2007 Mustang GT w/ Shaker 500 System. Balances all the highs, lows, mids, and bass perfectly and has a lot of preset sound signatures that fine-tune the sound even more! This is the best bang for the buck double din radio in my opinion.

Pros: Great Sound Quality Flawless Android Auto No lag Best bang for your buck

Cons: None

Unit is decent EXCEPT SiriusXM

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

The unit is nice in its simplicity. Doesn't have a bazillion functions but that's what I like about it. Purchased the head unit, The idatalink interface, and the SiriusXM tuner as a package. There is one huge problem however: the SXM preset function. The idatalink interface installed easily and everything works great *except* changing your SXM presets. There is a HUGE lag, sometimes it doesn't switch at all, sometimes it skips several presets at once. It doesn't do this with AM/FM or CarPlay or any other function, JUST SXM presets. I called idatalink thinking it was a problem with the interface, they assured me it wasn't and I believe them as the same problem happens with the wireless remote that came with the Sony unit. Called Sony, they had me do a couple tests but ultimately blamed SXM (skeptical). Called Crutchfield and they had herd rumors of the problem but didn't have a solution. Best I can do is hope for a firmware update from Sony. Time to get vocal on Twitter maybe... It's not the end of the world, switching presets via the touch screen works fine. Annoying, sure - but not annoying enough to tear it out and get a different unit. Fingers crossed Sony will get it fixed.

Pros: Simple

This screen is a simple well functioning answer to someone who wants a hands free option. Android auto works well and allows me to keep my eyes on the road. The menus are easily navigated with big icons on screen as well. A knob for volume would probably be my preference but the buttons work well. Not a deal breaker. I also wish the background was more customizable. Maybe an update could add more background options. Not sure about the USB cables yet. I don't like the cables laying around my truck. They do give you more flexibility to place where you want them though. Once I get them mounted and organizwd, I'll feel better about them. Overall, this is a great addition to my 06 Titan. Very pleased!

Pros: Simple Menus Great sound Responsive screen

Cons: Background options

I have always hated the factory stereo for the 2010-2012 Camaro's. I wanted to get a radio with Apple CarPlay since having it in other vehicles. I liked when I saw this Sony was a Double Din face but just a single din in the back basically. This made it easier to install. It was not necessary to modify the sub dash and left plenty of room for wiring and other install components. I got the PAC kit to keep more factory look and it came with install items to keep steering wheel controls. The radio itself works well whether using radio or CarPlay. There is not a lot of customization for background but there are a few different background color options which was fine with me. I got this basically for CarPlay and a better looking radio for the Camaro. It is just a basic, simple radio that works well with very little custmization

Pros: CarPlay, plenty of room for install components

Cons: None so far

JThis is a very capable head unit. Although, when Apple Carplay is on and you receive a call, there is a lot of echo for the caller, but that doesn't happen when Apple Carplay is disconnected and it's simply Bluetooth. Also, the sound has improved dramatically, bringing new life to the OEM speakers.

Pros: Improved Sound. Apple CarPlay Apps. Hands free.

Cons: Slightly dim in sunny situations and Autodim doesn't work well. Echo with callers while using CarPlay.

I bought the Sony XAV-AX5000 a few months ago to put in my last car, and was very happy with it. I ended up replacing the car only a few months later, and bought another XAV-AX5000 for the new one. I love the clean face with just a flat screen and a thin strip for buttons at the bottom, and CarPlay works just wonderfully on it. I do wish I could rearrange/remove some of the icons on the main screen to remove XM radio, but that's really a minor thing since I usually go right into CarPlay. I used Crutchfield's ReadyHarness service, and it's worth every penny. I'm still waiting on an install date for new speakers all around in the car, so haven't been able to really test the head unit out, but even with the factory speakers it sounds great!

Pros: Simple flat screen, flush-mounted well in my Corolla. CarPlay works great

Cons: Would like to be able to hide unused icons

I chose Sony because I have always appreciated the simplicity of operation of Sony Electronics. If I want it to do something, the menus are easy to navigate to do what I want. As with all Sony devices I've owned in the past, operation is so simple I never need to refer to the manual - Very intuitive. What good are features if you have to stop the car and pull out a manual to figure out how to access them? Sound quality is good - I'm no audiophile, but it makes the factory speakers sound pretty good. CarPlay works fine and is easy to use. I'm considering buying another for another vehicle after experiencing this one. Brady on the Online Chat was awesome advising me on accessories. Made my install cleaner and easier.

Pros: Intuitive interface

Cons: I would prefer a solid background to the wallpaper options available, but the standard options provided a nice enough background.

The install was very easy with the supplied Crutchfield instructions. I chose to have Crutchfield make the wiring harness, the best money I ever spent, I can't recommend that service enough. The unit went into a 2011 Ford F 250. I had to call Crutchfield once to get help on hooking into the factory sub, they answered quickly and solved the issue. The unit is great, very intuitive and easy to set up, I am not an experienced audiophile and it was no problem, the Apple CarPlay is great and worked seamlessly. Would buy again.

Pros: Easy install Easy setup Very intuitive

Cons: The wallpaper and customization is pretty generic
