Your media, your way

Sony XAV-651BT

The XAV-651BT is a great fit for your smartphone.

Bluetooth connectivity creates a wireless link between your mobile device and this receiver, allowing hands-free streaming of your favorite music, podcasts, and other content. If you're into Pandora, pair your iPhone or Android™ device to the XAV-W651BT, then control your favorite playlists from the Sony's screen. If you have an iPhone® with Siri, you can talk to her through the receiver, and you'll hear Siri's response through the car's speakers.

Front USB input

For a wired connection, plug your iPod, iPhone, or Android phone into the receiver's front USB input. You'll enjoy fingertip control over your music, and you'll keep your device charged up and ready to go when you step out of the car. If you have an Android phone, load up Sony's SongPal app to browse a wide variety of streaming services, and even control your receiver's settings from your phone

Sound and vision

The XAV-W651BT's powerful amp makes all your music sound rich, full, and dynamic. You can adjust the 5-band equalizer to optimize the acoustics in your vehicle, or quickly access the preset tone curves to adjust your sound. Your touchscreen menus and videos look sharp and crisp, thanks to the high-quality WVGA display. And you can select from a variety of background color schemes for a personalized touch.

Plenty of inputs and outputs

You'll find a front AUX input and USB port, plus a rear audio/video input for adding additional audio or video sources. The video output allows you to set up a rear screen, so you can maintain the back-seat peace with a steady stream of movies. Plus, the three sets of preamp outputs make it easy to add on amps or a powered subwoofer.

Stay on course

On the road a lot? This Sony navigation receiver package includes Sony's optional GPS module and you'll have TomTom navigation right at your disposal, no phone required.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?

In most cars, you'll need an adapter to retain those controls with this car stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and radio, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. You'll see the adapters that work with your vehicle when you add this receiver to your cart.

Their are two parts/viewpoints for this review. #1 Why would you buy from anyone else? Crutch fields support is unparalleled. Their tech support folks know their stuff. I made an error in my order and didn't realize until I was knee deep in the install. My tech was Oakley, he understood my delima immediately and had a temporary fix and a long term solution. Even if I found the exact same items for a lower price... no deal. Just because f Crutchfields support. #2 Imlove my Sony. This is my second Sony double din headunit and I love it. This unit has Bluetooth, rear camera input, touch screen, USab & front aux input. I do love it. My only complaint is the "fit and finish" of the final install. I installed this unit in my 1997 Ford F-250 and it left a lot to be desired. Now, it looks acceptable but my other installs looked much better. The sound is incredible and the rear camera view looks factory. Love it!

    Pros: Tough fit in a '97 F250

Cons: Great radio with many top drawer features

Have purchased items from Crutchfield before, great service, fast delivery even though I purchased it during the holidays. Online, the stereo looked good but was a little disappointed with the overall display image, wallpaper looks a little cheesy. Unless there is a way to somehow change it. Purchased it mainly for my wife to have Bluetooth, back up camera and the kids busy with movies. So far, it's been good. Wasn't happy that i wasn't notified that i need to purchase 2 antenna adapters(y adapter and a reducer) 2007 Sequoia with the JBL system has two antennas for some strange reason. And I also need a faceplate kit. Also agree with Crutchfield customer from Arlington, VA on 7/14/2018 2008 Honda Civic LX that it is DUMB that the music cuts off every time you hit the home button. Other than that Crutchfield delivered, with great customer service and tech support. Hope to deal with Crutchfield in the future again.

Pros: Great connectivity via Bluetooth for pandora and phone calls Like the knob for volume control. I'm old school like that. No glare during the day.

Cons: Wallpaper display clock is small- top right corner, personal preference Also agree with Crutchfield customer from Arlington, VA on 7/14/2018 2008 Honda Civic LX that it is DUMB that the music cuts off every time you hit the home button.

Giving 4/5 because while it does everything it is supposed to, and it sounds great (using with factory speakers and it sounds 10x better than the OEM stereo), the UI/controls could be a little better. Not as simple and intuitive as other newer head units I've used. It does the job, but could be better, IMO. Love the fact that the volume is controlled by a rotary knob - personal preference, but I don't care for push button up/down volume control.

Overall, great product. However, the clock likes to change at random. I've had the unit installed for a week and the clock changes all the time. And the radio reception isn't great. Install was pretty simple aside from not knowing what the Emergency Brake wire is for! (I found out it's a safety feature). The touch screen interface is very good compared to the other Sony head unit I have , it was very easy to setup, even for a guy like me with NO patience. I have this hooked up to the Boyo Rear view camera on my Dodge Ram 3500, this will be great for hooking up the boat trailer, and it worked the first time, no fiddling around!

Pros: -Good price -Good Touch screen interface -Relatively easy install

Cons: Sony manual doesn't explain what the Emergency Brake wire is for

Wiring worked great, dash kit worked great. haven't tried it with my external DVD monitors yet, but that is on the list. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a DVD unit for their ride.

The only thing was that it was kind of tricky to install in my car, a Mazda Miata 2013, but after installing it, I was blown away by how amazing it looked.

Don't buy this one. 1. poor reception of near by channels. 2. menu hard to navigate and sound stops if you look at song list! 3. Hard to see in sunlight. 4. volume knob too close to usb slot. 5. If you have mp3 folders that contain album art you will see cant play this content while it skips over those. 6. You will keep seeing a warning about not driving while playing videos. 7. sometimes the cd wont go in and it thinks there is one inside, this unit will cause accidents while driving. Sony use to make a good product, this is not one.

Pretty nice system for the price and fairly easy install as well. I only have a couple complaints: the music will turn off when you go out to the main menu (say if you want to adjust the fade). Just want to say, Crutchfield is great. I ordered this stereo, it was terrible, and they quickly sent me a pioneer stereo giving me 2 weeks to return this stereo. Why was this terrible? Poor screen/graphics, difficult to see if any light hits it, volume control too close to usb port when flash drive is inserted, when you switch between modes, such as to go to telephone, it shuts off your music immediately even before you actually place a call, it blocks you from playing your music if you have music recorded in mp4 format because it thinks you are playing a video even though you are not (and you can't play videos when driving)...many more design issues...it is a very disappointing unit and it was not defective...this is just what it is. Pioneer replacement unit was a vast upgrade in all respects for just a few dollars more.

The touchscreen is decent but there are too few features and options on the unit. The most notable drawback and the reason why I ultimately returned it was how the music turned off every time you hit the home button to change any setting on the unit. That's unacceptable at any price point.

Pros: Touchscreen is decent, Bluetooth works well.

Cons: Audio mutes when any settings need to be changed. Not enough features

So far this has been a great upgrade from the factory stereo. Wanted to add bluetooth and a rear camera. Installation took a little time. Black and white printed instructions are a little lacking. You are better off going online and watching a how-to video on an install in your particular vehicle. Head unit was pretty easy to set up. Haven't used the bluetooth for calls much yet, but the bluetooth audio streaming has been great. This unit is pretty basic, but great value for what you are paying. I probably would have gone with an Apple CarPlay Receiver if they weren't so proprietary with the navigation apps you can use.

Pros: Sounds good Bluetooth Audio Streaming Easy setup and adjustment of lines with the backup camera Front USB Port

Cons: Installation Instructions lacking Audio stops between input modes Choice of display

Generally very easy to hook up, install, and use, no real complaints here. Would be nice to be able to adjust tone/fade elements while music played, and your intuition wants to have you swipe the touch screen ala smartphone, but it's a touch screen, but that's nit picking. Purchased primarily because it offered front facing inputs to charge phone, etc. In any older car, this quickly becomes the most used feature as it can drive your navigation, music, etc. Bluetooth no good if your phone is dead.

Pros: Front access USB, simple touchscreen

Cons: limited tone adjustment, difficult to see screen in convertible

Not a bad head unit for the price but if you can afford one that is a little more expense I'd recommend going with it instead of this one. I wished that The head unit was able to turn off ( there is no off button). I also wished that the sound continued to play while you are in the menu selecting another mode. Even on the max screen brightness it just isn't quite good enough for the Phoenix sun. DVD quality is pretty good.

Pros: Fair price Easy blue tooth connection remote works pretty good Aux and USB on the front A custom EQ that you can set along with like 5 preset EQ

Cons: Dash kit adapter is very flimsy and doesn't match up well Screen flickers Cannot turn off Changing modes turns off sound The screen could be brighter The auto dim doesn't seem to work well ( but you can shut off the screen at night)

    1. The usb playlist menu is beyond bad. Who designed this, they should be fired. My thumb drive goes artist>album>songs but that organization is not supported and it ends up with some random collection of album names and songs. Terrible, and a deal-breaker. 2. Others have mentioned in these reviews that when playing something and you back up to a menu, the sound stops. Why do that? It is annoying. 3. Generally, a badly designed user interface. Where is the fader and balance? I had to consult the manual to figure that out. Returning it.

    Pros: None

Cons: User interface Limited usb playlist support

Great product. Easy to install, though the instructions from Crutchfield say you have to cut out the metal bar behind the unit to make it fit. In my 05 burb that wasn't the case. As for the head unit it has great sound, is easy to operate, Bluetooth catches my iPhone quick enough to not be annoying and is an overall solid basic DVD player/Bluetooth head unit. I would buy again. And would gladly buy from Crutchfield again. Their service is amazing and prices are just right. Thanks for the help!

    Pros: Love sony

Cons: Slight annoyance in that when switching from one source to another (or going to settings) the one you have been playing turns off.

Good features and price. Great sound and video. Only a couple of issues that kept me from a 5 star rating. First off, you have to turn off the audio to adjust the balance and fader. This seems to be a defect in the design process of the radio. It is pretty hard to adjust the balance when you can't hear any sound. The second item I noticed was playback with the usb option. It appears to be very particular with the encoding and bit-rate for video playback. Also, I tried attaching my Android phone to the USB outlet to see if it would show pictures, etc. Unfortunately the radio would try to scan the phone but would hang the radio. I had to pull the plug and turn off the car so the radio would re-start. Not sure what the deal is with this for as I don't have anything out of the ordinary for a phone and the directory structure is well within the limits listed in the manual.

Good Stereo; however may not function fully without a backup camera. A couple of wires did not match by color...caused a little headache when installing. Had to leave the wire for backup camera disconnected in order for the video screen to function. Now as a result my Bluetooth function doesn't work! That being said, the rest of the stereo works great! I must admit I bought this product mostly for the reputation Sony has for reliability and durability!

    Pros: Excellent reputation for quality/durability.

Cons: Need a backup camera for full functionality.

6.2" Touchscreen Display: The Sony XAV-W651BT DVD receiver features a 6.2" widescreen (17:9) touchscreen LCD monitor. The WVGA LCD monitor has a high resolution of 800 (H) x 480 (V) x RGB; with 1,152,000 total pixels. The LCD monitor provides touchscreen controls with easy-to-identify icons, making menu navigation easy. In addition to the head unit's touchscreen controls, the XAV-W651BT provides a 3-way rotary knob and a multi-function hard-key button along the left edge of the screen.

    • Picture EQ: You can select a picture quality mode suitable for the interior brightness of your vehicle. You can choose from Dynamic, Standard, Theater, or Sepia.
    • Aspect Ratio: You can also change the screen's aspect ratio of the DVD receiver's LCD monitor to suit your video content. You can choose from Normal, Wide, Full, or Zoom.
    • Auto Dimmer: To change the brightness of the display you can set the XAV-W651BT to one of two dimmer modes; Dimmer Auto (dims the display automatically when you turn your vehicle's lights on), or Dimmer On (display always dim). You can adjust the dimmer level from -5 to +5.
Note: To prevent the displaying of video while the vehicle is in motion, the light green wire in the supplied harness must be connected to the vehicle's parking brake detection circuit. Video can only be displayed when the vehicle's parking brake is engaged. While the vehicle is in motion (parking brake off), you can still view all of the other displays and menus.

SongPal App (for Android): Download Sony's free SongPal app onto your Bluetooth-paired Android (OS 4.0.3+) smartphone and take control of the Sony XAV-W651BT head unit right from your mobile device. You'll enjoy control over basic head unit functions, as well as navigation and seamless access to all your sources, music, apps, and more from your smartphone. The SongPal app also provides Voice Recognition from the head unit for applications that you have downloaded within the SongPal app on your Android device. You even get audible readouts of Texts, Twitter messages, Facebook feeds, and Calendar events on your Android phone through the Sony DVD receiver.

    • Voice Recognition: You can use voice commands to ask for directions from Google maps or to play a particular song/artist in your smartphone's music library. You can even assign music applications within the SongPal app, so you can access them by simply speaking the name of the application. While using voice commands there will still be times where you have to make a selection on your smartphone's touchscreen.
    • Notification Readout: Exclusive to Android devices, incoming SMS/Text and Twitter/Facebook/Calendar notifications are automatically read aloud through the XAV-W651BT and your vehicle's speakers to keep you safe and in touch. You can even reply to a text message via voice command and a list of preset replies.
    • Receiver Sources: From the SongPal app on your Android device you can access and select the head unit's Tuner (AM/FM), USB, Bluetooth, and Aux sources.
    • Playback & Volume Control: You'll also be able to control basic playback functions such as Play/Pause, Previous/Next Track or Station, and Volume Up/Down.
    • Song/Artist Info + Album Art: In addition, you'll be able to view song/artist information and station identification from the SongPal app on your mobile device.
Note: The SongPal app is only compatible with Android. Not compatible with Apple iPhone.

IR Remote: The XAV-W651BT comes with an IR remote control for wireless operation of the head unit. The remote does provide control over Bluetooth hands-free phone calls.

Steering Wheel Control Input: The head unit features an OEM steering wheel remote control input on the rear of the unit that lets you keep your vehicle's factory radio steering wheel remote controls when used with an optional steering wheel audio control adapter (sold separately).

    Built-in Bluetooth

Bluetooth Technology: The Sony XAV-W651BT is equipped with built-in Bluetooth (version 3.0), allowing you to make and receive phone calls wirelessly through the receiver; as well as stream music wirelessly from your smartphone to the head unit. In order to use Bluetooth wireless technology, your phone must also be Bluetooth compatible and be able to interpret certain profiles. This unit is compatible with the following Bluetooth Profiles:

    • Hands-Free Communication: HFP 1.6 (Hands Free Profile), PBAB 1.0 (Phone Book Access Profile).
    • Audio Streaming: A2DP 1.3 (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile), AVRCP 1.4 (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile).
Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Sony XAV-W651BT. Please visit Sony eSupport for a complete list of compatible Bluetooth enabled phones.

SPP + NFC Pairing: With Secure Simple Pairing (SSP), you can easily pair a Bluetooth enabled phone to the Sony XAV-W651BT without having to enter pin codes or go through complicated settings. Android (OS 4.0+) smartphones that have Near Field Communication (NFC) pair simply by touching the Android device's NFC tag to the head unit's NFC tag on the front-panel. For older Android smartphones with OS 4.0 or lower, download the NFC Easy Connect app from Google Play to use the head unit's NFC pairing function.

Hands-Free Communication (w/ External Mic): The Sony XAV-W651BT supports Bluetooth hands-free communication for your Bluetooth enabled cell-phone. Bluetooth hands-free communication helps to minimize distraction while driving by allowing you to control your mobile phone from the head unit, so you don't have to touch your mobile phone. The unit features an external microphone (featuring adjustable gain), so you can carry on your side of the conversation while listening to the caller through your vehicles speakers. And thanks to the latest Hands-Free Profile (HFP 1.6) with wideband speech capability, the XAV-W651BT provides more natural sound quality and details during wireless calls. The controls of the XAV-W651BT can be used to dial a number, answer an in-coming call, or end a call.

    • Answering Calls: Incoming calls can be answered manually or automatically (between 3-10 seconds) through the Sony head unit, while the ring tone is output from your car speakers and the caller's name or phone number is displayed on the head unit's LCD. Incoming calls can also be rejected if desired.
    • Dialing a Number: Using the XAV-W651BT, you can dial a phone number in a variety of ways.
      • Entering Phone #: Allows you to manually dial a phone number using the unit's touchscreen keypad.
      • Preset Dial: You can store up to 6 contacts in the preset dial for quick dialing from the unit's touchscreen.
      • Phone Book: You can transfer up to 1,000 contacts from your phone's phonebook and store them in the head unit for easy access using the unit's touchscreen monitor.
      • Call History: The unit will store the last 20 calls, allowing you to select a previous phone number quickly from the list.
      • Voice Dial: You can use the included external mic to make a call using the voice tags of contacts stored on your connected cellular phone.
      • Redial: Use this feature to easily redial the last number you called.
Note: During a conversation, you can switch between the Private Mode (talking directly on your cell phone) and the Hands Free Mode.

Wireless Audio Streaming (w/ Metadata Display): The Sony XAV-W651BT also supports wireless audio playback (AD2P) and control (AVRCP) of a Bluetooth enabled audio player or smartphone. You can stream stored music and music apps from your Bluetooth-enabled device to the XAV-W651BT. You'll be able to control basic playback functions; such as Play/Pause, Previous/Next Track, Fast-Forward/Reverse, and Shuffle/Repeat. The head unit will also display your music's song/artist information; such as Artist name, Song title, and Album title. You will continue to use your Bluetooth-enabled device to control advanced music playback functions.

Note: When an incoming call or outgoing call is in progress from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, audio streaming will be paused so you can take your call. Once the call is finished, your streaming music will resume.

Siri Control: When paired and connected to an iPhone with Siri via Bluetooth, the Sony XAV-W651BT has the ability to access Siri through its front-panel controls and external microphone. Simply press-and-hold down on the head unit's "Home/Voice" button to engage Siri and use the included microphone to communicate with Siri. Siri's voice will heard through your vehicle's speakers. All Siri functions including hands-free calling, music search, setting reminders, text-messaging, audible navigation, and more can be done through the XAV-W651BT and its microphone. You can even ask Siri to get directions to a destination and the turn-by-turn instructions will heard through your vehicle's speakers, while the on-screen map still displays on your iPhone with Siri. The head unit's audio is attenuated while Siri provides audible directions.

Note: The head unit's display will only indicate hands-free calling and Bluetooth audio information (all other functions of Siri are only audible through the Sony XAV-W651BT; visual data will still need to be viewed from your iPhone device).

    Android & iPhone Integration

Android Connectivity (via MTP): The Sony XAV-W651BT provides playback of stored music files on select Android (OS 4.0+) devices through its front-panel USB MTP-compatible port. You also get basic playback controls (like Play/Pause & Previous/Next Track) from the receiver's touchscreen. In addition, you are able to view song/artist information on the receiver's touchscreen monitor. Simply connect your compatible Android device with the microUSB-to-USB cable that came with your device. The unit's USB port (1A) will also charge your Android device while connected; the vehicle's accessory key must be set to the 'ACC' or 'On' position.

Note: During connection, you cannot use your Android smartphone's touchscreen to control music playback and you cannot select music apps from your smartphone for playback. However, you can continue to listen to stored music on your Android smartphone through the head unit while you check your Calendar, Facebook, Texts, etc on your phone.

iPod/iPhone Direct Connection: The Sony XAV-W651BT supports direct connection of select Lightning or 30-pin Apple iPod/iPhone devices through its front-panel USB port. The XAV-W651BT offers playback of your music library or music apps, browsing control, information display, and charging of select Apple devices. Simply connect your compatible iPod/iPhone using the cable that came with your Apple device, or purchase another Lightning-to-USB or dock-to-USB cable (sold separately) to be used in the car.

    • Music Browsing: From the receiver's touchscreen monitor, you are able to browse your iPod/iPhone's music library by Artist, Album, Song, Genre, or Playlist (content in each category is listed alphabetically). The unit also offers basic playback controls; such as Play/Pause, Fast Forward/Rewind, Previous/Next Track, and Repeat/Random. The head unit will even display your Apple device's song/artist/album information. Your iPod/iPhone will remain unlocked during connection, so you can continue to control your Apple device from its touchscreen and access additional music apps.
    • Song/Artist Info: The digital media receiver will display your iPod/iPhone's stored music file information; including Track number, Elapsed playing time, Song Title, & Artist/Album Name. The XAV-W651BT will also display song/artist information and station identification from select music apps.
    • 1A Charging: The head unit's USB connection provides 1A of current to power and charge your connected iPod/iPhone when your vehicle's ignition switch is set to the 'ACC' or 'On' position. If your iPod/iPhone has no initial battery charge, then this unit will not recognize it.
Note: Access to your iPhone's downloaded applications will depend on the availability of a cellular and/or WiFi network for purposes of allowing your iPhone to connect to the Internet.

Pandora Internet Radio: The Sony XAV-W651BT digital media receiver lets you playback and control the online Pandora music service that is being streamed to your USB-connected Apple iPhone (iOS 9.0+) or Bluetooth-paired Android smartphone (OS 4.0+). Rear View Camera Input: The Sony XAV-W651BT is equipped with a composite video Rear View Camera input to connect a backup camera (sold separately). By connecting a rear view camera, you can use the in-dash receiver's touchscreen LCD to see what's behind you when backing up. You can even choose a normal or reverse image.

    • Auto Switching: When your vehicle's shift lever is in the reverse position, the screen automatically switches to the rear view camera; the purple/white wire of the included harness must be connected to the vehicle's reverse lamp circuit for automatic video switching. Automatic video switching takes approximately 1.5 seconds. You can also manually select the rear view camera input.
    • Parking Guide Lines: When a rear-view camera is connected and you are viewing a rear view image, parking guide lines appear on-screen making parking easy and safer. There are three color-coded horizontal guidelines to aid you in backing up into a parking spot.
Note: The rear view camera feature is meant as a back-up aid only; never solely rely on the rear-view camera when backing-up. In addition to using the rear-view camera, always look behind you to make sure everything is clear when backing up your vehicle.

does this unit play Spotify via bluetooth?
    [ Charlie  Mar 25, 2018 ]
    2 answers
    A
It doesn't have the Spotify app, just pandora. However if you have Spotify on your phone it will play through the radio via Bluetooth. You won't have Spotify on the radio screen. You'll control it through your phone. I use Amazon prime music. Same idea, use the app on the phone, play through the radio via Bluetooth. It will play any music app through a phone via Bluetooth. In the menu on the radio you just select "Bluetooth device" your phone will then see the radio under Bluetooth settings. Select it and they will pair. The radio will play any sound coming out of your phone. Not to mention the sound quality of the Bluetooth connection is excellent. Going from the radio to Bluetooth I have to turn the volume down. Bluetooth is crisper and louder.
