The sound quality is more than I expected ! but it is a Sony product it goes very well with my blaupunkt speakers they never sounded that good with my Kenwood CD stereo. Now I'm going to have to put my other blaupunkt speakers in my doors!

Pros: The Bluetooth feature is awesome since I have an older car! People don't even know that I'm in my car because of the sound quality they tell me! All the other options are great the color quality of sound! And more haven't had time to figure it all out just yet haha!

Cons: Nothing yet!!

Ive never owned any head units other than Pioneers. I took a chance on this one and Im sold! First the amp pounds. Its very impressive just how much more power 40 watt rms is vs the standard 20 watt rms in all other decks. The best feature by far for me is the ability to use the rear speakers as subwoofers. This makes excellent bass and I will only buy Sony headunits now for this feature. Honestly I didnt know it was a feature i purchased this unit for the power Class D Amp. I bought a single din for my clunker daily driver didnt deserve an expensive double din touch screen but Im glad I branched out and gave this a shot!

Pros: Powerful Amp, Can use rear speakers as subwoofers and it works exctremely well, easy to use

Cons: Kind of pricey for a single din non touch screen. Probably due to amp.

I have had this receiver for a little over a year, just outside its warranty. For some reason, the receiver keeps resetting itself back to the factory defaults. It did it once under warranty and I thought it was something I did. Now that the warranty is up, it has done it a couple times. I like all the features of this radio but this is getting to be a little annoying.

Bought it for my son for his Jeep for Christmas. It went in easy, Sony instructions are always complete. We hooked up the microphone and that works great. He loves the color customization and the sound customization. He set the low pass filter and high pass filter, we cranked it right up and had zero distortion from the fronts, and tuned the amp and subs to really thump. The features and options on this radio are amazing, he was able to control menus and sound right from his phone. I am ready to buy another one to install in our Wrangler. He was ecstatic when we finally got it going, "best Christmas ever!"

Pros: Everything

Cons: the only con is the noise filter? power box for the amp portion of the radio. There isn't much room to install it in the dash.

Not Good

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Was not impressed with this product at all. I worked with several of the engineers at Crutchfield and we were unable to get decent sound from it. Initially I thought it was the speakers, so I swapped them out (3 times) and it was still very muddy. Honestly, it sounded quite terrible, so I decided to just replace the Sony with a Kenwood and see what happens. I'm so glad I did because the Kenwood absolutely blows it away - no contest. Maybe I just got a bad one, I don't know, but now I can finally put this project behind me. Many thanks to the folks at Crutchfield for their patience and help.

Pros: Easy to install. I like using my smartphone to control the settings and playlist with Music Center app.

Cons: Everything else

Great Bang For The Buck!

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I've been a car audio fanatic for almost 30 years now. I've owned a lot of different gear and have taken pride in finding the best "bang for the buck" items. This head unit is certainly no exception to that. At this price point, I'm certain there isn't a more feature and function rich unit. The 40 watts X 4 RMS, Bluetooth, 3 sets of 5 volt preamp outputs, 10 band EQ, and strong FM tuner make this unit a steal at this price! The not so great points: the app is useless other than setting the eq, the time alignment is preset and not true time delay using distance from speaker to listener, the crossover slopes are 6 db per octave at best, and not the stated 6/12/18, and there is no Q adjustment for the equalizer. All in all, an incredible value as long as it plays for years to come. The JVC unit this replaces is still working going on its 7th year in service.

Pros: Built in class D amplifier, 5V preamp outs, Bluetooth, fast and strong FM tuner

Cons: The app is useless, time alignment isn't user adjustable, crossover slopes not steep enough, eq doesn't have an adjustable Q

Nice unit

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I installed this a few days ago in my '08 PT Cruiser Converible. Playing through Rockfort Fosgate 6.75" front speakers and stock dash and rear speakers, sounds very good. Controls are easy to learn and mostly intuitive. The big MegaBass button is nice because you don't have to take your eyes off the road to get a little extra bass. Come on Sony....if you are going to put a 40 Watt RMS amp in the unit you should put conections for decent speaker wires or at least put something better than the crappy 16ga wire used on all other units. For this price point it should come with a cover or case for the removable face. SongPal so far is more trouble then it's worth, and not safe for use while driving. Overall a nice unit and probably cheaper then buying a unit and sperate amp of the same power and quality.

Pros: Nice power, sounds good, controls mostly intuitive, MegaBass button is fun, probably saves money over sperates

Cons: No option to replace the stock 16ga wires with decent speaker wires on the built-in 40 Watt RMS amp, no case/cover included for removable face, SongPal not safe to use while driving

Great alternative to installing an amp

Best stereo I've ever owned. I got it for the power because like many others I didn't want to install an amp. 40 Watts is more than adequate to play music loudly and clearly on the highway with the windows down. What I really like is the option to utilize the rear speakers as subwoofers. I have two Pioneer 6x9s (also purchased at Crutchfield) and they sound pretty decent as subs. They aren't thump thump loud but that is not what I am looking for. They recommend a direct connection to the battery but I've tried it both ways and didn't notice a difference.

Pros: Clean amp Rear bass enhancer setting

Cons: Only 4 channel out Bluetooth fail

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Very satisfied with this product. The radio does require a direct wire to the battery to function at its full potential. Once the wire was ran for the positive and the ground, even with muddy sounding stock speakers can be made to sound awesome with some patience and tweaking of the equalizer. The bass is unreal, again with the stock speakers. The adapting harness and antenna adapter as well as the dash kit, all free of charge, made the installation a breeze. Only thing i needed to purchase was the wiring kit to the battery and the butt connectors i used to connect all the wires. For the wiring kit i just used a basic 270 watt amp kit and used the power wire with an inline fuse, and the ground wire. Fully adjustable screen and button color along with the excessive power of this head unit are the biggest highlights in my opinion. Overall, for the price, this is the best option i could have hoped for. Installed 2002 Dodge Dakota.

Pros: Bass Full control of screen and button color Bluetooth

Cons: None, although be prepared to run a wire from the positive side of the battery. I located a ground point under my dash, but the ground location will be different for every vehicle.

So Far, So Good! I'm not a big audio guy. I saw the power this unit has and I've been trying to avoid adding an Amp. I bought this unit for use in a classic car. I mounted it in the glove box so not to ruin the dash board. The BT works flawlessly and the sound is much clearer than the old 40w Sony. So nice having BT and more power and no needed wires for audio transfer. I'm gonna buy another for a different car for the same reasons...

Good si gel DIN with built in amp. Not much of an amp but just good enough to bring out the sound. Daylight display is only visible with white color. Fits the 2001 VW Eurovan but you have to figure out how to get the OEM back support out of the way. That takes considerable effort. The Crutchfield adapter connector works perfect. If you have a coach battery you will need to add a switch to run the radio with key out of ignition. That is easy to do.

Pros: Very easy to install wiring. Perfect fit in OEM location

Cons: Difficult to remove Eurovan radio support OEM. Need to add external switch to run on coach battery.

Upon installation this stereo sounded good, but after two weeks the Bluetooth completely quit working. A week later the auxiliary feature stopped working as well. When in auxiliary mode and plugged into my Serious radio, the power cycles on and off approximately every 3-4 seconds. If I leave the aux cable plugged in, but set the receiver to Tuner, it plays local radio just fine, but as soon as I switch it to Auxiliary, then it does the power cycling. Disappointing since all of my audio equipment is Sony and have been spectacular!

Great product. But do not buy unless you can wire it directly to a 15 amp power source... usually the car battery. In my case, I have it installed in a large boat in an area away for potential moisture exposure. So, I didn't need a marine version.

Pros: High power made simple without a separate amp having to be installed.

I have a Jeep Wrangler in Arizona. About 15 months ago I replaced the factory stereo with a Sony mex-xb100bt which required its own circuit direct to the battery for the supposed to be wonderful amp; I also upgraded the speakers. After a few hours creating a circuit, soldering the connections and installing it right, it never really worked well; I was unable to listen to talk radio at all or music with the windows rolled down on the highway. Then it stopped working - wouldn't power up. It was no longer under guarantee, so I had to send it in or replace it. I decided to replace it. I actually threw it in the trash! I usually would have tinkered with it and figure out the issues, but it was so annoying to use and counter intuitive that I just treated it like the trash it was. It wasn't about the install. I am pretty competent when I do these projects. In hind sight I probably should have removed it and sent it back the first time I turned it on. When it died, I was kind of glad to be rid of it. It was so annoying trying to I replaced it with a $100 Pioneer and am MUCH happier with its performance.

Pros:

Cons: Stopped working after 13 months - out of guarantee - would not power up. Max sound output was less than normal road noise with windows down. Difficult to navigate controls. Not intuitive at all. Difficult to set-up. Lights annoying.

Great radio! One of the reasons I replaced my old one was that the tuner wasn't very good and it didn't catch or keep a lot of stations. This new one has a WAY more sensitive tuner and i am picking up stations in my driveway that I was never able to get before. Also, this one has enough power to really drive my newly upgraded speakers without the addition of another external amplifier. So much so, that it is overdriving my factory subwoofer in the console! Just the excuse I needed to upgrade that too!

Pros: Easy to install Great power Really sensitive tuner so more stations available

Cons: Subwoofer feed overpowers factory speaker. No SCAN button!

This is my first aftermarket stereo and it was well worth the price. The music is very clear and there is no distortion at higher volumes. I ran the mic up the A-pillar and mounted it behind the rearview mirror. Callers can hear me fine. The audio options offer great sound. I don't have a sub, so the Mega Bass is a wonderful option and provides plenty of bass. The stock speakers sounded a lot better with this unit, but I changed out the speakers to four 6x8 Kickers a few days later and the sound was even better. Crutchfield was there to help with several questions I had. Great product, great service. The one minor point that would make this unit better is if I could save the EQ preset to each station (i.e. Country EQ to country stations, Rock EQ to rock stations, etc).

Pros: Great sound, easy install, simple menu navigations.

Cons: I wish I could save EQ setting to specific stations.

I have personally used this for over a year and love it. The specs are unbeatable. I have a 147+db stereo and this pushes 4 Fosgate 6.5" 3ways and they keep up no problem. I recommend this to all my customers and have never got one complaint. I've installed well over 15 of these. Been in car audio for over 25yrs and this is the best. The features are amazing. Selectable xover slopes, a true 45 x 4 rms, 3 sets of 5v preouts (mine tested at 5.3v) a true 120 s/n ratio. No deck can even come close. And CEA compliant.

Pros: 120db s/n ratio, selectable xover slopes, 45x4rms, eq, 5v preouts, xm, Bluetooth, the list goes on and on.

Very nice stereo with built in amp. But amp doesn't deliver the punch I had hoped for. Clear audio is wonderful. Like HD Radio. But must be reset manually every time "bass boost" is used. Wire connections are simple, but a wire must be directly attached to the battery. The sound is very good. Overall, I'm quite pleased.

MEX-XB100BT First impression WOW there still is a decent head unit made! Coming from the days when we had good quality eclipse head unit with 8v preouts such as the old cd5000 this sony does good but does take a little more knowledge then most units today. I tried a comparable kenwood and a pioneer and sent them both back! First the kenwood would not read flac files and nether did pioneer. Kenwood search function gave you random numbers and letters and the pioneer was painfully laggy. Non of them issues with this Sony! Now going from Eclipse 8v preouts down to kenwoods 4v i had to adjust amp gains up a lot! More then expected. Seemed to distort before i ever hit the level the eclipse could get to. The pioneer was even worse! Almost as bad as not even having a amp it would distort so easily. Hooking up this Sony with a 5v rating i expected to turn my amp gains up from the 8v of the eclipse and actually i ended up going down! This Sony is very close to the old eclipse in the sound quality and getting to the same volume without distortion as the good old eclipse. After many years of playing with car audio and more then 50 different head units i have never found any other brand close to eclipse before till now! In my day eclipse was the bench mark alpine mite of got 2nd and the rest was trash. Not any more! If alpine would of had all the option i wanted i probably would have one but now I don't think i will be pulling out this sony for a alpine if alpine started offering the opti

Pros: Everything and best of all you can have the display show the clock all the time! unlike the kenwood and pioneer i tried!

Incredible improvement. I installed this in my 2002 SVT Focus to have Bluetooth and hands free calling.....but wow what great sound. The extra effort of running a separate power line for the higher power output is well worth it. I replaced the premium Ford Audiophile system, which was good for the day. The sound system is as good as our new car now. It is my 2nd Sony replacement stereo and I am just as impressed as the first one that I installed about 2 years ago. As always, the experience with Crutchfield is outstanding, especially my advisor who spent the time to find a harness to allow the factory subwoofer to plug right in and work.

I just purchased this head unit for my truck and am running it with a pair of Polk db651's in the front and Kicker CS654's in the back. The unit sounds good. Very good. It also does a fair job of driving the speakers, but make no mistake, it does not perform like a separate 40X4 amp does. I've found that it can get pretty loud, if you set the HPF to 60 or 80hz. The higher you set the HPF, it seems the louder it will go. If you run the speakers full range, or even with the HPF set at 50hz, you can get good bass, but you cannot have loud with good bass. It seems that the amp section just can't deliver the current. If you want loud with good bass, get a less expensive unit with all of the same features, but without the class D amp section and put the money into a separate amp. All in all, I'm very satisfied with the unit. I like it a lot. The music it produces is crisp and clear, all the way up to full volume. I have a Kicker Hideaway on the way, so it's my intention to run the HPF at 80hz and let the sub pick up the rest. It should do nicely.

Pros: It puts out more power than most head units. Being able to control it with my iPhone is a very nice feature and works very well.

Cons: Amp section is weak considering what it is advertised by Sony to be.

I have it in a 2000 Honda accord pushing Infinity 3way 6X9's in the deck and Polk 6 1/2's in the doors. This deck keeps these speakers from distorting and it's got crisp sound.

Honest Review

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I bought the Sony MEX-XB100BT, JBL GTO629 (Front) and the Infiniti Ref 6502 (Rear) and they all work well together. Even with the high power of the Sony MEX-XB100BT unit, the system does not have any low end sound. It a full range sound. While there are many controls to tune the sound to taste, it will not deliver bass, just full fidelity. So adding a subwoofer is recommended if you want the feeling to go with the sound. I see that others have had issues with the time not showing all the time, I too see that as a problem. It does show the time, but it cannot show the time and anything else. So when taking out my factory radio, I wasn't thinking that I'm also removing the factory clock. Just something to consider when selecting this unit. I see that others have issues with the system not cutting off with the switch, I would have to assume it's wired wrong. I see that others have issues with the brightness, there's a setting that will enable full brightness if necessary. Essentially this is a very good unit. Many bells and whistles and I wouldn't have picked another unit for the money.

Pros: Full Fidelity Sound. Plenty of Power. Lots of Customization (Display and Sound)

Cons: No low end feeling of bass.

This unit lost all power and would not reset after about a month. It turns out the only way to fix this was to disconnect it from the power source for about a minute. Then it would work for a few weeks and would need to be "reset" inorder to power on again. If you like resetting all your settings and your stereo telling you to use sony's app every time you connect your phone this is for you. I was also not impressed with the power of the unit but that may have more to do with the cheap speakers in the car.

Pros: Awesome if you are looking for flashing rainbow lights

Cons: Power issues, Asking you to use Sony app constantly, not that powerful

Killer head unit! Bought this as a replacement for a factory head unit in my son's F250 super duty. Love the extra power without needing a separate amp to get the best out of the Polk DB572's that I bought to go with it. Great sound and easy to navigate head unit. Bluetooth calling works and sounds great integrated with an iPhone 6...sounds like he's not on hands free and doesn't pick up the background clatter of the 7.3 diesel, but still easy to hear his voice. He was planning on adding a sub, but now loves the sound so much that he feels that it doesn't need it right now. I would highly recommend this head unit!

Purchased this for a 2005 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon unlimited. If you're purchasing this unit to try and avoid an external amplifier as I did, you're better off going with external amplifier. If you're budgeting, this head unit does a good job pushing the music and sounds really good, but there's no comparison to an external amp, as I later found out. Bottom line: Skip the built in amp and put the money toward another unit the Sony makes if you're wanting to play it loud! It's a good head unit. The sound level is definitely better than a head unit without any amplification and is a better option. The installers stated it was one of the best sounding Jeeps they've heard, and it all looks stock! My set up: Sony MEX-XB100BT Focal PS130V (rear) Audiofrog GS42 (front) Kicker Comp 6.7 Sony XM-N502 amp bridged PDR-F50 amp 4 channel

Pros: The controls are pretty intuitive and don't require much to learn the process/menu. The display is very groovy! Lots of colors The USB port is on the front of the unit, which allows ease of access to plug in music. The equalizer set up lets you tune in the music and sounds great! Mega Bass option allows a little more punch when needed. 5V out source Power wire included to battery Crutchfield customer service is Awesome!

Cons: The blue tooth connect doesn't work well. I was able to get it to connect, but then had issues with it after disconnect the unit to upgrade components. It doesn't seem to want to connect, but does recognize the head unit on the "song pal" app. While I had it connected, listening to a playlist from my iPhone produced a very low volume, compared to the radio and even more so compared to a CD or USB. Clock doesn't seem to hold time well and has to be enabled to be displayed. NO HD r

This is a nice radio. The sound is really good. AM/FM stations pick up way better than the stock radio ever could. The only reason I give it 4 stars is I had to change the original one out because here was a problem with the Bluetooth calling. One reason I like ordering from Crutchfield is they sent me a new one out that day.

Pros: Sound and the changing colors with the music

Cons: Hard to navigate through.

Great sound, love the high power and the fine tuning and connection options. Bought this as part of a relatively inexpensive redo of the whole system in a 2006 Grand Caravan that won't last forever. It's connected to Rockford-Fosgates in the dash, Infinity's in the front doors (all to the front channel of the Sony) and a 6 1/2" Bazooka sub on the rear channel. Not at all disappointed. The installation was easy even with the added direct power connection. As always the Crutchfield-supplied harness helps a ton. Great alternative to using a separate amp(s) for power especially for a sub. It took some time messing with the sound options and subwoofer settings but the final result sounds awesome. Sounds great playing anything from Led Zeppelin to Def Leppard to Madonna to Five Finger Death Punch as well as audiobooks. Great clear highs and great tight bass with the MegaBass turned on. I mostly use a Plug N Play SiriusXM unit thru the Aux and even their less-than-optimal signal sounds great. Bluetooth setup easily and works well. I've avoided the app so far based on other reviews. I would recommend this to anybody especially for high power without the need for separate amp(s).

Pros: Great sound, lots of power, lots of fine-tuning and connection options, plenty of bells and whistles, reasonable price.

Cons: Menus and options can be a bit confusing, shows all inputs even if nothing connected.

First time with a Sony head unit. It works as it should, and was fairly easy to set up, plus has great power specs. My four year old loves the colors-like a dance hall on the road.

Pros: Easy install, higher End power specs, clean sound

Cons: I'm old, so it takes me a few tries to get the faceplate settled.

I bought this to power 4 Infinity Kappa 2-ohm 75-watt RMS speakers. My old head unit didn't have enough power and would cause the speakers to pop at high volume. With this Sony unit, the speakers are clearer than ever, have deeper, stronger bass, and never pop at any level. I use my Galaxy S6 for both music and navigation. The USB charging is perfect for charging my phone while it's mounted to the windshield without cords hanging.

Pros: 10-band equalizer Custom color USB charging Compatibility with 2-ohm speakers Power

Cons: None so far.

I've had this installed in my car for a little over six months now. This is combined with four 6.5" Kicker KS coaxials in the factory locations. This drive beautiful crystal clear audio at any volume. The Bluetooth makes it a piece of cake to stream music and run Waze on long drives seamlessly lowering the volume for voice prompts, notifications and even voice commands. The high powered amp negates the need to add an additional four channel amp to match your sub's volume.

Pros: High power, lots of connectivity and file format options, bluetooth.

Cons: didn't install it self.

The factory stereo in my Tacoma didn't have bluetooth, and the aux cable tends to eventually gets staticky, decided to replace the unit then the aux port again, glad I did! The stereo sounds awesome, bluetooth is awesome, the equalizer is great for dialing it in, and mega bass is mega sweet! (Also upgraded the door 6x9's to Rockford Fosgate 6x9s.) Very noticeable upgrade from stock! (I love this stereo)

Pros: Great Sound Great Features Bluetooth Enabled Intuitive Interface Nice color schemes 10 Band EQ Mic cable was long enough to run above my rear view mirror

Cons: "Open App" - Though with newer firmware this doesn't stay stuck on until you press "back." Will take longer then a standard stereo to install due to routing the power from the battery. Wish I could disable all unused sources from showing up with the sources button.

It's a great buy for the money. It out preforms the factory Infinity stereo it replaced. I have replaced my speakers with the "kicker" speakers. I am very pleased with Crutchfield for their expertise with the help of installation when I had questions. I had intended to pay more, too.

Pros: I like all the colors that it changes to while it is playing. I think it is a plus. The power it puts out is just what I was looking for. It plays CD's, Aux and Ipod beautifully.

Cons: The built in power amplifier was a little bit harder for me because you have to power it directly to the battery. This requires to run the stereo power thru the fire wall.

Pros: Easy install. Unit delivered on all promises. Folks that helped with install from Crutchfield were awesome, friendly and knew what they were talking about! Great support Team!

Bought this radio because of band reputation, and especially FM sensitivity specs being one of the best. I like the radio, but not ecstatic about it. Minor quirks, like being constantly powered so you have to shut of, and turn on manually every time you get in/out the car. The Tuner memory button are tiny, and so reaching for them without taking your eyes off the road is tricky. (Have only had it installed for ~ 10 days, so I'll probably adjust in time...) As for the tuner itself, it is marginally better than my 1996 FM/Cassette Honda radio it replaced! (biggest opportunity is most likely replacing the antenna with a good quality powered antenna on the outside of the car). The biggest improvement is the ability to pair with my I-Phone, so I can play my music library without carting hundreds of CD's around!! Yay! You can still step back in time, and play CD's one at a time, for nostalgia sake! Over-all satisfied, but my socks have not been knocked off yet!

Pros: Straight forward install; decent power; blue-tooth pairing with my smart phone for calls and music; and the ability to add Sirius radio reception.( after I hit the lottery!)

Cons: Tiny station preset buttons; constantly powered so you must manually turn on and off everytime you get in and out of the car.

This is a great stereo. Have 4 Rockford Fosgate p2's at 65 watts RMS. And 2 JL Audio 10TW3's at 400 watts RMS a piece, powered with a autotek amp. Sounded really nice with my old Kenwood deck. Installed this stereo in my pickup after the old one quit me, and the sound is amazing. I am super impressed with how it made the door speakers sound with the clear audio function. Clear and Loud! The settings are a little "confusing" for someone who doesn't know everything about audio systems. But read the manual and it'll clear most of your issues right up. That being said, if you know nothing about audio systems and you just want loud music, might want to have someone else do the install and tuning. But Overall, great product. Glad I spent the extra cash instead of just going with another Kenwood, which I really like too BTW.

Pros: Great Sound!

Cons: Settings a Little Difficult to Operate

This is a very nice deck! The sound is great, it is relatively easy to use, but the "open app" and in-app use can be frustrating occasionally. I love the color display- being able to set buttons and screen to different color rotations is neat, especially at night. I am really a fan. This came highly recommended by a professional car audio shop in town and I don't regret my purchase one bit. The size is amazing too! Very small for the output it has. Make sure when you install this you bypass the factory amp, or all you have is a cool looking deck, but no extra power. Either by running new speaker wire, or cutting and connecting from the input to output of the amp are the two easiest ways to get around this.

Pros: Great power Great look Nice compatibility Size!

Cons: Open App shenanigans App is poorly designed

I can't imagine a selection (for my purposes) that I could be more satisfied with. Although it has several options I don't use (Bluetooth, etc) I am satisfied with the extra power it provides, and the 10 band equalizer. I added a non-powered 8" Sub and it does great for me. I also really like the random play option for MP3s'.

Excellent high power deck

Michael B from Fairfield, CA on 6/28/2016

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

This is the future of high power sound in car stereos. By putting an efficient class d amplifier in the receiver, you get at least double the power of other aftermarket receivers. If you use 2 ohm speakers you get even more power and although the manual it says not to use 2 ohm speakers, on the Sony website it says that many are running 2 ohm speakers with no issues. I am running jbl gto series seperates in the front of my Camry and gto 6x9 in the rear deck, all of which are 2 ohms. Sound quality is outstanding once you get it dialed in, which does take some work. I found the clear audio+ to boost the high frequencies too much, so I disabled that as well as the mega bass as I have a powered sub taking care of the bass. I was able to fine tune the sound with the 10 band eq. Time alignment also makes a huge difference. Another review said that he couldn't use the rear speaker outputs to power a sub. You absolutely can. You have to turn the rear bass enhancer off and then connect a sub to either one of the rear outputs. All of this is in the manual by the way. I tested this feature with a jl audio 10w1v2 that I had laying around and it works perfect but I used the rear outputs for my 6x9 speakers, so I put a powered 12 in the trunk Another review mentioned the unit not powering on. This did happen to me. After contacting Crutchfield, they discovered that this was a known issue that Sony fixed with a firmware update. After I applied the update, works perfect.

Pros: Highest powered receiver available. Excellent sound quality. Front inputs

Cons: Takes a while to get audio dialed in. Songpal app not horrible but could use some improvements. To get the extra power, you do need to run a wire from the battery and use a bigger than stock ground wire to match the power wire. But this is still way better than installing a separate amp!

I would be lying of I said installing this was easy. In order for this product to work to maximum capacity you have to run a dedicated power wire from the stereo power adapter through the firewall and onto the positive terminal on the battery. All in all after two days of work I finally have it installed and I couldn't be more happy. I'd like to note that this is my first step in upgrading my sounds system in my Dodge Neon as I currently have two blown door speakers and factory 6x9's available.....this stereo makes the factory 6x9 speakers sound amazing, and its still loud without door speakers yet. All speakers will be replaced in the next couple weeks with the matching Sony xb series speakers. I will make a YouTube video once it is all said and done. HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS!

Pros: Amazing sound output Awesome color customization Sleek and sexy look

Cons: Very difficult to install and unless you're a pro you'll probably need some help, this is the only downfall.

Great sound quality. Even with the top down, I can turn the volume up and have great sound. I have a Sony stereo in my truck as well and the quality so far has been great. Better navigation of settings or modes with the remote than trying to set or choose on the face of the stereo itself. Multiple color selections and I am able to see the screen even with the top down in the sun.

Pros: Great sound. Easily connects to my iPhone 6. Easy to read in the sunlight (at least on the color choice for me).

Cons: When using the Bluetooth audio from my phone it defaults to wanting me to open an app. From all the reviews on that app I have read, it is useless. I still can play music just have to get pass that default screen. Also goes into demo mode after so much time not interacting with controls.

The features and sound from this unit is really impressive. Sound is clear, and has the power to make my rear window vibrate. The parts that detract from how great this head unit could be is: 1) the hassle with the stupid Songpal. Anytime I want to sync my Bluetooth phone with the unit, the Songpal wants to get involved. 2) Whenever the car stalls (its a manual) the unit goes back to default, which means a lot of things to change back. 3) Instructions are so-so. There are so many features that it appears they could not put all the info in the number of pages allowed. I have talked many times with customer service, but ut seems this is just something to put up with

Pros: 1) Clarity 2) Features 3) output

Cons: 1) Songpal 2) settings go back to default 3) instructions

I got this because of the higher power and the FM sensitivity. I listen to weak stations often and wanted to make sure that I still could. I was surprised by the very nice sound quality. I like that a lot. There is a problem though and I am trying to decide whether to return it or not. Not only does it have a severe problem with weak stations but its tuning system permits almost no manual tuning unless you already know the stations number. Trying to locate NPR stations for instance, is maddening. I have two vehicles that have bottom od the line JVC's in them and both get the MPR and College stations well. This one can't even find them. The search function only stops for powerful stations. If you listen to anything except the Clearchannel Mega stations or spend time in less populated areas you may be SOL. IF you don't listen to the less powerful stations or live in a populated area where there are many big stations then you may love this.

Pros: Sound quality. Power.

Cons: Unable to search for or listen to less powerful stations. No usable manual station setting. Ridiculously complex setting menu. I still can't change the tone or EQ controls.

Many said that it was lacking bass. Not so, this unit has so many options for sound adjustments you can get as much bass as you wish without a sub. I am totally satisfied with this HU. You won't be unhappy.

Pros: It is a complete unit for someone who wants great sound without spending lots of money.

Cons: None I can find.

All the features I wanted

I didn't want to bother with installing and wiring up external amps. But I have a Miata, and needed a stereo that could compete with the wind noise without distorting music. I don't have very expensive speakers, but they sound quite nice. This model has twice the output power of most any others I looked at (which were many). This unit automatically turns on and drives my sub (Sound Ordnance B-8PTD 125-watt compact powered subwoofer) with its low-Z outputs, and has easy adjustment of high and low pass filters, plus levels for speakers, inputs, sub, etc. Sony's app on my iPhone is a little klunky, but VERY versatile in all I can adjust from my phone. Biggest joy is moving into the Bluetooth realm, finally. Pandora and iHeart Radio, audiobooks, maps navigation--whatever I can hear on my phone, I can now hear through the car's speakers. Pandora seems to be the unit's favorite thing to automatically pair and play. There are so many features and things to set and adjust, it's taking me quite a while to learn it all, but it's not difficult. It was a bonus that the faceplate detaches, since I have a convertible--didn't know that when I ordered. Another bonus was being able to make my favorite baseball team's color scheme on the display. It's just versatile at every turn.

Pros: Power output when external amps aren't wanted All the helpful features of Bluetooth Versatile adjustment of many settings

Cons: The wiring harness provided had the illumination (from headlight switch) in the wrong pin--but it was quick and easy to pop out and relocate correctly. Bluetoothed Pandora takes over other things I was previously listening to, sometimes.

i bought this receiver to replace my stock 2006 Electra-Glide radio. Along with a Biketronics BT1005X Kit, I'm still able to use my handlebar controls, and this kit comes with all the hardware necessary to make it an easy, clean looking install! It looks like it came from the factory! I'm now able to play all of my LPs, and CDs, (over 200), that I was never able to do with my stock receiver, via the front loading USB flash drive slot! This thing has SO many other features, it's incredible! The sound is awesome too! I can cruise down the road, with the throttle opened right up, and there's plenty of power left over, even when I have the volume turned up to the point where I can't hear the bike running! I highly recommend this!

Pros: USB slot, Bluetooth, Handlebar control ready, Hi- volume amplifier!

Cons: None I've found so far!

I've been through a dozen or so builds from budget to no expense spared (well, within limits). I recently did a $2500 systems (parts only) that took about 15 man hours. It was nice. It was loud. It wasn't really worth the effort. I picked up a '04 Silverado shortbox and wanted to try a simple system. Began noticing various HU's with add-on mini amps. Research led me to the XB100BT mainly because I had the idea of running the rear channels to a pair of 6" subs. Kicked that around and finally decided to track down an efficient 10" or 12" shallow sub and try the rear subwoofer setting. Picked up an MB Quart RLP304 Dual 4 ohm sub. Running the front channels to a pair of Alpine 6.5" comps and the rears to the MBQuart and I was blown away. I was concerned about running the rear at 2 ohm on the sub but caught a you-tube video from a professional tester who had no trouble. I'm telling you, this unit will push that sub without any trouble at all. Will it crack the windshield....no. But if you're looking for SQ and really good volume, low distortion without the hassle of RCA's, Amps, massive power wire runs, etc....do yourself a favor and try out the Sony. My son took my truck off to college and he got away before I could strip the system and put in my new truck so I just reordered everything again and getting ready to install. Knowing how simple it is...probably take me 2 hours start to finish.

Pros: Great sound in a simple and cost effective approach. Very adjustable sound settings and pretty intuitive menu system....took no time to learn.

Cons: Non really, other than every time you shut down and start back up you have to hit the app button and pause button to restart the bluetooth. Might be a setting but not a big deal.

Great Value, powerful amplifier

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

This Sony HU is a great value considering the features you get for the money. The Sound quality is very good and the amplifier is a huge plus. I have this unit driving four Pioneer 3-way 6*8 speakers in my Mazda 5 and they sound fantastic compared to the factory unit. The built in amplifier really brought some life to these speakers. The 10 Band EQ is a really nice feature. I used test tones for each of the 10 EQ settings and adjusted them to my liking. Someone mentioned that you only get 6 db of adjust-ability but it's really all anyone should ever need. Using the test tones, you can really hear the difference with minor adjustments. The time alignment settings are not as precise as my Audio Controls DQ-61 on my other car but then again that is a $400 unit. Still the time alignment settings are useful for settings things just right and are user friendly. I also really like the Songpal app, which makes adjustments easier than using the controls through the unit. My wife's cheap Trackfone pairs to this easily and so does my company iPhone. The voice commands work better than my Ford F-150 Sync or my Mazda CX5. Sound quality is best when used through the USB cable vs bluetooth but this is true of all radios, not just Sony. Be prepared to wire in 10 gauge power and ground to get the best power from the amplifier and also read the manual thoroughly as this radio has so many features that it will take a while to learn them all.

Pros: built in amplifier saves space and money and simplifies installation. Built in amp really lets your speakers reach their potential. I was playing the radio without the subwoofer when I first got everything together and my wife thought I had the subwoofer on. 10 band EQ and time alignment. Sound quality. can adjust the displace and button color to match your dash perfectly or just let it change colors, which my wife loves. All the features work like they should.

Cons: So many features to learn takes some time. Does not come with a faceplate case so you should order one here to protect it.

Against my better judgement, I bought this deck to replace an old Alpine. If you look at reviews of this deck online you'll notice quite a few 1 star reviews complaining about how the deck just fails to power up. Sometimes it's days before it happens, other's say months. In my case, it was less than 24 hours. The deck worked great yesterday and this morning. At lunch I stopped at the grocery store and when I started my car up again, no deck power. I trouble shot the power. My main line from the battery and my ignition pwr wire both read 12.8 volts at the end of the harness where it connects to the deck. Now I'm stuck dealing with a return. How come this issue is so rampant on online ratings but it's never mentioned here. Does Crutchfield hide negative reviews?

Pros: In the short time this deck worked, the sound was great.

Cons: Broke in less than 24 hours.

I purchased this receiver a couple weeks ago and installed it into my 2005 Mustang immediately (the instructions and additional products included by Crutchfield made it a breeze). I honestly couldn't believe the difference in sound quality in my vehicle by just installing this receiver (I have a shaker 500 sound system and it sounds better than it ever has before). The Bluetooth has amazing sound quality, unlike many of the other aftermarket brands and stock car audio systems today. The mic that was included allows me to be heard clearly while taking a call rather than having to yell or hold the phone up close to my mouth. The colorful display can be changed to fit your car or your mood. I have zero regrets on purchasing this CD receiver.

After getting this head unit installed and wired properly, it has turned out to be a really great product. The high power requires a dedicated line to the battery. This unit has good power and function. The sound quality is excellent and it connects easily to my I phone. Due to some of the buttons having multi-functions based and the source you are listening to, it took a little getting used to. Overall I am very happy. Great- but one caveat for Beetle owners

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I really like the radio, it's got really good power for a head unit and the Bluetooth works flawlessly. The SongPal app needs work though, Sony, jeez. Having a good number of bands of EQ and various phase settings is a plus, and the integration with my streaming apps is excellent. MegaBass works great and the funky lighting can be fun, in a Voltron-esque kind of way. Classy looking, not really, but I like it. However, if you're a VW New Beetle owner such as myself, you should know that due to the extra size of the unit, it does not just pop right in to the dash, even though this is not indicated in any of the instructions. Luckily, it's easy enough to remove the front dash plastic and remove some of the useless extra plastic bits inside and then it's no problem. But be aware of this. If you're wary of taking your dash apart, much less modifying it, have it installed by a pro. I'm not going to knock off any stars for this. I haven't needed an amp, it's plenty powerful with my Polks, though I'll probably add a small sub for imaging reasons. This is a really nice unit, I did tons of research and this one kept coming out on top for my budget.

Pros: Good power, sound, Bluetooth integration

Cons: Larger, external wiring box can impede installations in certain cars

It does everything I want it to do. It looks cool, has lots of clean power, and sounds fantastic. Currently it is pushing the lousy stock speakers, but even those sound infinitely better than with the stock head unit. The install was very easy on my 2005 Dodge Grand Caravan because it is already fused for 20 amps to the radio. This only needs 15, so I didn't need to get the additional install kit. But, since I did, I'm sure I'll use it for something.

Sony was a gift to my 18 year old son - pretty happy kid. Only issue - I installed it in his 2004 Yukon (has the factory Bose system but i don't think that's part of the problem) and I'd initially ordered the GM5 interface kit for the steering wheel controls. Simply doesn't work. Crutchfield support was truly first class - sent a replacement GM5 unit (no success) then even a replacement Sony unit (no success) so finally they sent the Axxess interface kit and that worked. SO - if you're trying to get this Sony to work with your steering wheel controls - put up the extra cash for the Axxess interface. It's also slightly more confusing to install but all's good now.

Pros: Great iPHone interface - hands free w/ the microphone is great...and makes it all safer

Cons: None except for the GM interface issue which Crutchfield support helped me solve by sending an alternative interface.

I installed this unit in my 2008 Crown Victoria Police Interceptor. I installed JL Audio speakers as well. Incredible sounding. The sound is so accurate. The Highs are bright and clean. The Mids are clear, not muddy. The Lows are full and tight. I used it for 2 weeks with the Ford factory speakers. It sounded great. Yesterday I installed the new speakers. WOW what a difference. I chose them based on a recommendation from Crutchfield Support. The Graphic Equalizer works well. I have a Sony stereo in my semi that I listen to all day long, but look forward to the 45 minute trip each way to and from work to listen to the new stereo.

Pros: It is the best sounding Stereo I have heard in this price range. It has more than enough power.

Cons: The installation kit for mounting the stereo did not fit properly. The tabs that were to latch it in place were a 1/4 inch past the edge of the panel and would not give it a solid mount. I had to clamp it in place and use Epoxy on the back side to secure it in place.

The color customization is awesome, it allowed me to match the button color to the factory instrument lighting in my Mercury GM.

Pros: Features, sound, value.

Cons: Sony wants you to install the 'song-pal' app, which I suspect is used to gather data on ppl; and so if you have a smart phone linked to the unit, the unit asks you to 'open app' Every time you start the unit. You can simply hit 'source' and make this request go away, but I've yet to find a way to deactivate song-pal all-together on unit . I've been able to do everything I want without the app, so its mildly irritating, but the overall quality and functionality of the unit make this a minor issue

This was perfect for my application. 1997 Wranglers do not have a lot of extra room so I wanted to avoid having to mount an additional amp for speakers in the dash and soundbar. Paired this with four 5 1/4" Kickers and the sound is great. Its better than I expected. Wiring the small amp that is mounted to the receiver was not complicated and was made easier by supplied wiring harness. Bluetooth is easy to use, has controls for Pandora off of my phone. Display is highly customizable and looks great. For added power in vehicles without much room for additional equipment I can't think of a better solution. Coolest head unit I've ever owned. Plenty of options, the lights are awesome! The FM receiver is incredible, it's picks up more stations that my new cars. It also seeks almost instantly. The microphone picks up nice and clear for the other person, which is nice because in my 83 chevy pick up there are plenty of background noises (exhaust, wind, road noise, tires).

Very pleased with this stereo. I have had many stereos in my life and this is by far the most powerful one. It's like having an aftermarket amp installed along side it. It has everything you need to be the base of a fantastic system!!

Pros: Power Features Style

I ordered this stereo unit a couple of months ago...I have just installed this unit in my 1987 mustang 5,o convertible...I had previously replace all 6 speakers to upgrade the substandard sound quality that I was experiencing...The upgraded Rockford Fosgate and infinity speakers helped tremendously ,but I was still not satisfied with the sound quality when turned up, with the pioneer unit that was in the car.. I decided to give this Sony a try after researching some new stereo units..I have to say that I was somewhat skeptical, being a huge Pioneer fan over the past 38 years,..but those concerns and fears were put to rest after installing this unit and powering it up in accordance to the detailed installation instruction and install kit included...I am very very satisfied thus far...It has a nice crisp and clean sound that I was hoping for....after growing accustomed to navigating the menu and setting the 10 band equalizer to my liking,I have to admit that it is more than what I had originally expected...can be tailored, sound and color display/buttons to suit your listening and visual aesthetics...I like this unit! Thanks Crutchfield team for your timely shipping and attention to detail by sending all needed installation necessities!

Pros: NIce Unit!!!!

Cons: None noted to date!

I've put systems in almost all my vehicles dating back some 30 years. Some, low level, some exotic. IMO the goal should be simplicity and satisfaction. This unit does what it says. True 43 w/c at 4 ohm x 4. The kicker is that it will do 68 w/c at 2 ohm. This is where the fun begins. I decided to try some 2 ohm speakers and settled on some JBL 6.5" coax's for my 2004 Silverado door. The rear of the Sony is running a 12" MB Quart shallow mount sub at 2 ohm. I don't think Sony recommends running the HU at 2 ohm but if you check youtube you'll see some evidence that it works. By comparison, I just installed an $1800 system in my 03 Silverado with a nice Kenwood double din/nav unit and a 4x100 Kenwood amp and comps up front, and 10" dual Kenwood shallow subs. Its nice....not the best I've had, but very nice. The Sony system...which I managed to put together for $400 is just as satisfying as the Kenwood system. Not as dynamic in when really cranked but for 95% of my listening its very good. I think in the future, companies are going to be including these mini-amp add-on systems standard. I think they'll be integrated into double din unit. For 90% of the car audio users it will be plenty. Its simple, easy to install and manage. I doubt I ever go high end, all out again.

Pros: Simple, efficient and very satisfying to get that much sound out of such a small investment. Easy to learn and navigate the menu. Fairly flexible configurations and plenty of power.

Cons: The HU isn't pretty but its not bad. Could use a brighter display but that only becomes a problem in direct sun.

A very smart design for such a small receiver. Thank you, Sony, for getting it 'Right'.

Pros: The multitude of built-in functions

Cons: I wish there was a way to have the unit return to TUNER mode when ejecting a CD.

I was worried when this unit did not come with the usual hand-holding instructions that come with Crutchfield units. That worry ended about 20 minutes after the installation began. The harness wires matched color for color, and the install was a breeze. This was a gift for my daughter's truck, so many of the settings will be made by her.

Pros: The bluetooth hookup was easy. The FM worked right away, as did the bluetooth music off an iPhone. The telephone itself made and received calls right away. The sound quality of the unit is amazing. This replaced a 17 watt unit, and the difference is obvious right out of the box. The factory-set equalizer pre-sets work well.

Cons: Get ready to read. This unit has tons of options, and it would be a very good idea to READ THE BOOK before you take this unit on the road. You don't want to be trying to read while driving.

Good product, to many lights for my style. Sounds great - updating the Jeeps stock speakers soon. Easy to install and great Crutchfield Tech Support. I could not get the lights on the radio to stop blinking. A few minutes with Tech Support and problem solved.

Pros: Great power, great sound - even with the stock speakers.

Cons: Too many Lights..

Great little head unit/amp - Far more powerful than anything else I've

Great little amp. Wired right up to my neon's harness with the included kit from Crutchfield. Performance of this head unit far outdid the prior 10-22watt weak system that I had before from Sony. Well worth the extra $$$ to get the 40W with 100W peak. Not only that, but there are builtin crossover features in the headunit that allow you to turn the back seat into a "sub" like setup. I'm running my 6x9's with the rear crossover frequency at 80htz

Pros: Great output, drives larger speakers decently unlike older 17-19watt head units which always left the bass distorted when you started turning it up. The bluetooth connectivity is flawless with a Galaxy S5. Couldn't get the S4 to connect the first time I tried with NFC. Not sure what the deal is there.

Cons: Display and button placement are lacking. The buttons are tiny and could be larger and more beefy feeling. Hate the way you only get 6 presets for radio.

Installed in a 2005 Dodge Durango to replace factory system.

Pros: Easy install. Fairly intuitive menu system. Has good options for connecting to various systems. Good power. Good radio reception.

Cons: Display needs to be brighter as can't see in direct sunlight. Display does not have the option to flash the song title/artist, then return to clock mode when using a usb flash drive.

Best car stereo I have ever owned.

I bought this stereo to replace the factory Infinity system in my 03 Mitsubishi Eclipse. This stereo has really crisp sound and thumpin bass. It has more options than I will probably ever use, but its better to have more than not enough. Just read the owners manual for this stereo and you will be fine. As far as steering wheel controls, they are done through the head unit, not through the converter box you install. Connect all the wires and refer to the stereo manual and head unit.

Pros: Great sound, lots of features, good price.

Cons: reads some burned cd's a little slow.

Great sounding stereo, easy to install, easy to use. As always - excellent sales and tech support from Crutchfield. Phoned Crutchfield looking for an amplifier for an in-dash tablet install (Sony Galaxy Tab S 8.4), but wanting satellite radio capability and decent sound. This unit was recommended as a compromise in order to be able to have all the features I desired - at least until I get the tablet dash mount project figured out. My original intention was to completely hide the unit behind the tablet, but I may reconsider this. Either way, it's a great unit.

Pros: Easy to install, easy to set up, like the built-in amplifier. Even makes my factory speakers sound good - bet it would be awesome with aftermarket speakers.

Cons: Who the heck uses a CD player anymore - would rather have more screen real-estate or other other features. Rear USB option would be nice. Unit will only auto pair w/ 1 bluetooth device - a major annoyance that almost caused me to return the unit, except there were no better alternatives. Using aux in for the sound proved to be a lousy option, so workaround is to auto-pair phone (for hands-free) & manually connect the tablet from the tablet bluetooth menu (media only). C'mon Sony - really?

This review covers only the sound quality of the SONY radio & player in a 38' sail boat installation replacing a 2 yr old SONY unit. This new MEX-XB100BT unit is used with 2 Peachtree digital shelf speakers in the cabin (from Crutchfield) and 2 outside BOSS speakers mounted on the stern rails, music is played either with USB or HI RES aux units, an AK120 or SONY NW ZX2BLK (the latter two also purchased from Crutchfield). Installation of the unit was easy because it replaced an already wired SONY radio CD USB player. Upon playing the first mp3 (320k) music via a USB stick, the change in quality was instant and noticeable, overall sound delivery was incredible in it's richness easily rivaling a dedicated music room. The cabin of my sailing vessel is quite large and provides excellent acoustics that makes listening to music a totally new experience. This is really the first time I heard the full scope of my excellent Peachtree speakers - everything sounds totally different now - a 'concert hall' sound profile comes to mind. 24 Bit 'Hi Res' music, sampled at 96 or 192KHz, sounds nothing short of incredible, particularly classical orchestral, strings, or classical piano music. I have not heard the new sound quality over the BOSS speakers yet but I have a feeling I wont be disappointed. I am totally thrilled having this type of audiophile experience now available in my boat. Up to now this could only be achieved with expensive, multiple & bulky components.

Pros: Power and output quality is simply stunning! Only player I know that supports FLAC files in a USB stick. Super cool!! Has lots of features I dont use, like full mobile phone integration, voice command via supplied mike, Bluetooth, etc.

Cons: A face only a mother could love.

Install was quick, receiver came will all the necessary mounting hardware and wires. It looks great, sounds great and has a ton of features. Used an iPhone to stream through BlueTooth and it worked great. Tried three different generations of iPods(nano's and touch) and an iPhone 5c through USB and the receiver recognized all of them and allowed me to control the iPods music from the receiver. When connected via USB if you turn your car off the iPods will turned off as well. The extra power output from this receiver is noticeable, the receiver it replaced didn't have anywhere near the upper volume this receiver has. No need for an external amplifier for me, the output of this receiver is enough. Sound quality is good even at higher volumes levels. Installed in a 1997 F250 and it fit perfectly, even though the product finder on the website said it would not. Very happy with the purchase.

Pros: Fit perfectly, sounds great and has a ton of features. Came with everything needed to install. iPod / iPhone control and battery charging through the USB port. Bluetooth streaming. No need for an external amp (for me anyway). Great choice if you don't have the room for an external amp.

Cons: The "power box" is a bit large but I was able to find a place to install it at the side of the receiver in the dash. Also, the "power box" has a fuse. If the fuse blows the radio will need to be removed to change it....... I guess if the fuse blows you probably have a more serious problem and the radio will need to come out anyway.

Crutchfield response on 3/16/2015
When we measure stereo depth, we include an allowance for the connectors that plug into the back and also enough room for RCA cables to be plugged in. This particular receiver has a connector that protrudes quite a bit from the back, so it inflates the depth required for mounting the stereo. In many vehicles, it would butt up against the rear of the radio cavity. We're glad to hear that it didn't get in the way of your installation!
