About the Sony MEX-XB120BT

You'll feel the difference

I've installed new car stereos in my ride and really noticed the difference power makes. But when I add an amp, the sound really takes off. You can skip adding the amp and still enjoy that level of performance with Sony's MEX-XB120BT CD receiver. Its built-in Class-D amp delivers 45 watts RMS per channel — 100 watts of peak power — equivalent to what you'll find in many 4-channel car amplifiers. Installation Note: We recommend running a dedicated constant power wire to the battery for optimal performance from this Sony's amp — we offer an inexpensive wiring kit for this installation. This Sony's high-powered amp won't work in systems where an outboard factory amplifier is still active.

Since even raw power deserves a gentle touch, Sony complements this beefy output with a sophisticated suite of sound shapers, including frequency filters, bass enhancers, time alignment, and a 10-band equalizer. And check out this cool feature — Subwoofer Direct Connection lets you use the output of one the receiver's two rear channels to drive a small subwoofer. That's ideal for small compacts or truck cabs, where space for an amp may be limited.

Bluetooth® for two

Bluetooth adds the convenience of hands-free calling and audio streaming. You don't have to enjoy that convenience alone, as you can pair two phones at one — one for your music and calls, while the other can take calls at the same time. With select phones, you can even pair with Near Field Communication (NFC) technology. Just touch devices with NFC to the N-mark on the knob and you'll be ready to go. With compatible iPhones and Androids, you'll enjoy voice controls for making calls, listening to text messages, and other features.

USB for your devices

When you plug in your Android or iOS device, you'll be able to rock with your favorite music tracks in a jiffy. The latest generation of smartphones can suck a lot of power, so the USB port kicks out 1.5 amps to keep your screens glowing bright.

Super styling

Whether you want your dash subtle or suave, you're covered. Sony's Dynamic Color Illuminator offers up to 35,000 combinations of colors in two different lighting zones, and will even pulse in time to the beat or volume of your music. Cool details like a nifty sliding USB port cover add a touch of style.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

iPod/smartphone note: If you're going to use your iPod or smartphone with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for compatibility information.

Needed a replacement for a tired old OEM stock hu in my Jeep LJ. Space being a premium, this unit has the extra punch I needed to drive the new 5.25 kickers. Others comment that it is too technical, but it only took this 60yo. About 20 minutes to figure out the controls. Great buy.

Pros: Packs a punch.

Cons: Needed an extra wire to power the internal amp.

Best I've ever owned

By far the best CD deck I've ever owned...powerful and streamlined, it was easy to hook up, use and tune. I was a little worried that because of how powerful it is it would be too hot but the D class amp actually produces less heat than my old player! Thanks Crutchfield!

Pros: Easy to install 3 separate preamps out the back, including a dedicated sub out Extremely powerful, even for a car with 8 speakers Easy to tune Absolutely gorgeous display

Cons: None so far

Great receiver. Love all the features, and the 45 Watt output. Installation instructions were clear, and everything went well. Hardest part was running the 12 gauge direct battery connection that was suggested for this unit. Also ordered Crutchfield's kit for that purpose which had all the components necessary to do the job. Love how all the necessary instructions and installation kit are provided. All I had to do was connect the radio pigtail wires and the wiring harness wires together. In my case the wire colors matched one another. In any event, the wiring harness came with adequate instructions as to which wires to connect (even if colors were different). I would suggest ordering the wire connectors package along with this receiver. Would have saved me a trip to the auto parts store. All said, this was a great purchase, and Crutchfield's customer service is always A++++

Get this deck.

Such nice power and clarity with this deck, had my last Sony deck for about 6 years so I'll never go with any other brand. I'm using this with all kicker components, two 450watt 6x9 and two 350watt 6.5 speakers and this deck easily powered them. i turned the volume up to 40 (max is 50) and my wife looked at me and mouthed "...40...???" No clipping or distribution at high volumes as long as you have higher watt speakers.

Pros: Easy install. Menus are just like past Sony models. Download the Sony music center app.

Cons: I didn't buy it earlier, this deck is so good.

I purchased this to replace a older Alpine head unit that I purchased a few years back. I was looking for a nice stereo that was able to power my cars front speakers (Boston pro60s) without using a separate amplifier. This head unit worked out great and the different in sound between this and the alpine is day and night. I highly recommend this to anyone considering.

Pros: High power so in my situation I did not need a separate amplifier.

The radio works well. Install was simple and nice that Crutchfield supplies you with everything you need. I will say that the radio has too much power for factory speakers. It is hard to appreciate the power output without a speaker upgrade.

Pros: Easy to use. Sounds nice. Power output is nice and Bluetooth works well.

Replaced the stock TKI batwing Nakamichi junk radio with this unit. Night and day difference. fm sensitivity is great and I'm picking up every station I could want. Enough power to drive my kicker speakers even at highway speeds. Controlling it with the Sony Android app. I recommend this unit to anyone looking for a powerful setup without needing a separate amp

Pros: FM sensitivity, ample power, Android app, style, font facing usb port, 15 min installation.

I installed this head unit on my Harley and It looks great and sounds great. The only issue I had was, the bracket was missing 4 screws that holds the radio in the bracket. Other than that, it was an easy install process. It works great with my Hogtunes amp and speakers. I didn't have to disconnect anything. and I still have jacks for a new amp for Subs. The settings is fairly easy. You will have to go into the settings to change a few things to get it to your sound. Bluetooth was very easy to setup for both phones that I have. Before you get to the settings and syncing please read the manual. Once it's set up you don't have to touch it again. I am really enjoying it.

Pros: set up, settings, color, install, and compatibility

Cons: missing 4 screws, a lot of reading for setting's and how to's

It has been a great stereo. Very low distortion at high power. 46 is my number according to my oscope. Only one real problem. You absolutely have to hook a larger 12-10 guage fused power wire or you will get an output error as the built in class D amp heats up from lack of voltage. Maker sure to ground to frame also.

Unit has good power, but has no mid to low punch - no bass. Running Hertz 6.5 comp up front, and kicker 6×9 rear. No matter how I adjust the Eq, and even using bass boost, there is no low end at all. Probably an ok unit if you have low expectations for sound quality, or want to use in a work truck or camper, and just want loud sound.

Pros: Good power

Cons: Just ok mids and highs, no lows

This thing is awesome. 45 watts rms per channel. I had an older model Sony without bluetooth and replaced it back in July with a Kenwood KDC-BT768HD, only because Sony's only single DIN HD radio had been discontinued. The Kenwood just never performed on any level, like the old Sony. So after playing around with the HD radio for a few months I decided that HD is no good if the receiver doesn't pick up many stations. The Kenwood would not pick up the stations I normally listen to very well at all. So I came across this Sony MEX-XB120BT and love it. The tuner picks up stations like a magnet. The Bluetooth connected by NFC immediately. (Kenwood never worked). The subwoofer output signal is killer. Currently set at "0". Had to turn the Kenwood up to "10" to get any bass. And the Sony Music Center app actually works. Kenwoods app is useless. Go with Sony.

Pros: Rocks hard and loud. Can be painful to go above 3/4 volume. Everything works, even the app.

Cons: None.

I have always been a fan of Sony mobile electronics dating back to the 90s with the ES line. I was looking for a new head unit for my Jeep and remembered seeing this one in a review video. The built-in class D 4x100 amplifier is impressive. I have not run a dedicated power source for it yet and it seems to be performing fine. Its packed with features that would have put this at 3x this price just a few years ago, 3 sets of RCA out, multi-color display, full Blue Tooth integration etc. What I really like about the Sony products is the ease of use, one volume knob and preset buttons unlike some that have gone rotary control, touch or remote only. The radio reception is great, I was able to dial the illumination in so it blends with the HVAC controls below it. ETC. Crutchfield as usual didn't disappoint, fast well packed shipping, excellent install instructions and quality installation parts included!! A+ all the way!

Really impressed with the features. built in low pass with slope and freq for the sub plus high pass, slope, freq for the 4 channel main. Many stock EQ settings plus a custom 10 channel. Input sensitivity for BT to match things like tuner volume. Channel delay and imaging processor. mic has 3 levels of noise canceling and is very intuitive to make calls. So much I still need to go through but this is a highly customizable deck. It has a CD player and FM/AM which will never be used by me. Also has USB, 3.5mm, BT plus allows sirrus and I think pandora so quite a few source inputs. It's claimed to be 40x4 but the power wires can't handle that. Still, wire to the battery. I wonder what the THD is at 40 watts- can't be bothered to look up for this review. I've noticed with my setup of 4 alpine door speakers with sensitivity of 87, the head would hit a power wall around 32 on the volume knob, it goes higher but can really hear the distortion after this. I would recommend speakers with higher sensitivity for those seeking louder music. Still, Highly recommend this unit. This was perfect for not wanting to get a amp for the main 4 channels.

Pros: xover network, DSP, immense customization.

Cons: could use larger power wires, hard to get the face to snap in. might need to run a relay for the remote-on if running multiple amps (0.4 amp max)

New system for my Wrangler TJ

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Replaced my stock Wrangler TJ radio with this unit and 4 kicker 5-1/4" speakers. Bought a direct replacement for the blown out factory subwoofer in center console. Total investment around $380. Installed it all myself. I would say it a 300% improvement over the stock setup. I won't buy electronic equipment anywhere else. Thanks Crutchfield!

Pros: Great sound at high volume needed inside my noisy Jeep. The extra power really makes a difference. No need for an external amp for my type of listening. Modern feature packed head unit is a nice upgrade from the stock radio in my Jeep.

Cons: Running a dedicated power line from the battery through the firewall and finding a good ground was a huge pain in the ass. Everything else was EASY with Crutchfield's instruction sheet and phone support. Had I known running that power line would be so tricky for me I probably would have paid for a pro to install it. But that's just me. More mechanically/electrically inclined folks probably won't have a problem. Now that I've done it once I could probably knock it out in less than an hour.

Good value & great sound...but marginal Manual Crutchfield techs helped me turn off the "disco" flashing lights which were really annoying... Sony - and other electronic companies - need to make their manuals much clearer, and simplify the layers of choices to accomplish setting up and using their equipment.

Pros: Sony - means quality sound and expected life Crutchfield tech support is Awesome!

Cons: Manual is not well written and multi-step menus are indicative of too much complexity.

I had this head unit for 8 months, it is in fact very powerful, at the 8 month mark, my radio started saying output error and wont power speakers directly from head unit, only through the rca to amplifier. I believe the internal amp is very susceptible to failing.

Pros: powerful

Cons: expensive sony head units always seem to fail, this was no different.

The XB120BT, being my first aftermarket stereo, is decent. It is overpriced but because amplifiers with this amount of power will run you at least $80 on crutchfield, the markup for the 45w RMS feature kind of makes sense. I went with it anyway because it will allow me more flexibility in speaker choice. The stereo does nearly everything I want and well, but there's a few issues. It has trouble with certain audio files. The unit has frozen a few times playing specific FLAC files from a USB drive and will have audio lag when browsing through the USB drive with the on screen browser. Because of those issues which may or may not be FLAC related, I really will try to avoid using the USB feature unless I have a good reason for it. The on screen browser for USB drives to be honest is not intuitive enough and annoying to use. The way folders are selected isn't easy. And I really do not appreciate autoplay for USB drives which can't be turned off. Bluetooth works fine except for the fact that my phone only autopairs with the stereo if the stereo setting for Autopair is set to OFF, not ON. Doesn't make sense but at least autopair works. Lighting colors can be adjusted in RGB on a 32 points scale which is pretty cool, since I'm able to match the color to my car's dash color scheme. The volume knob could be better, like it feels kind of cheap and the clicks are a bit mushy instead of snappy as I'd prefer. You'll be spending a while installing the

Pros: Does most functions well. Good settings menu.

Cons: USB drive browsing and playback is subpar. Volume knob could be better. Overpriced.

A big part of a good sounding system.

Crutchfield customer from Opheim, MT on 7/24/2018

2018 Jeep Wrangler (JK)

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I got the MEX-XB120BT and a pair of kicker 43CSC654 speakers for my 2018 Jeep Wrangler JK at the same time with the hopes of fixing the disappointing factory 130 stereo. My first step in the anticipated upgrade had started previously with the installation of a powered bass subwoofer with an 8" speaker. It didn't really help much as it added lows but they were very muddy. So next I put the new Kickers in the sound bar and that did help a little after I added some polyfill to stop the bass notes from buzzing (a common complaint on the forums). In my case I think it was mostly the speaker connectors vibrating. My next step was to install the new Sony head and this is where the sound really improved, the whole system sounds good now and the old sub cannon filled out the lows while using the built in EQ on the Sony head made it easy to get the lows sounding good. Without the sub woofer the sound would still be good but I would miss the low end drive. I am close to retirement age and so I am not looking for any extreme volume levels but I do want good quality sound. There are a lot of options and different settings possible with the Sony unit but for my interests good quality sound was my objective and this head will do it but I think better speakers (like the Kickers in the sound bar) are a part of the solution. I have not changed any of the front speakers or tweeters as I feel pretty happy wit

Pros: Good sound with lots of options and high power.

Cons: Menus can be a little laborious to navigate.

Overall this seems to be a pretty great head unit. Sound is good, volume is good. Bluetooth functionality is great, which was a real relief, as I only stream music these days. I plan on adding a small subwoofer to the system. I am not sure if I will use the head unit to power it, but it's nice to have the option. The only real fault I can find is that the faux carbon fiber on the faceplate is cheesy.

Unit does not have "bass/mid/treble" adjustments that I can find in any of the menus, or in user manual, other than the "extra bass" button. Does have "high/low pass filters, which may do the same thing (or not) but I don't understand that part as I am an old school Bass / Treble" guy. Love it! 35 year old me is happy to finally have plunged back into car stereo like high school me, just on a budget this time. The higher power output is legit. I have Pioneer 4-way 6x8s in the car, and that JBL Basspro12 in the trunk. Great match. No, it won't get to the earsplitting levels of my 3kwatt high school whip glory, but for this old man it works. The power from the head unit keeps up strong and clear with the sub with all types of music. I've run through the paces with Vulfpeck, Polyphia, August Burns Red, and Guthrie Govan, among others. Phone integration with my Galaxy S9 is flawless, and it connects within 2-3 seconds upon starting the car. Call quality is great, both on my end and for the folks I speak with. Sure, if you wanna spend $4-500 you can get a nicer head unit. But not at this price. The 10 band eq is super great, too!

Pros: Great bluetooth connectivity, great clean power

Cons: Wish I could get the clock displayed while listening to Bluetooth.

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I have no claims to validate the power output of this unit. It does however supply, I would, argue plenty of power to drive high end components. My factory speakers are 22 year old paper cone 6" full range woofers with tweeters soldered in parallel with no crossovers. They sound amazing with this head unit. Very loud, and extremely crystal clear. Of course the bass is missing. My RV stereo sounds so great, now I have decided to add 2 10" subs to fill in. For the audiophiles out there, I am saying, I have that much mid bass and up sound, that is amazingly clear, that it could easily be accompanied by 10s or possibly 12s running around 400 watts and not be bass heavy. A couple side notes: This unit is connected to the factory 8 gauge power and ground cables. All connections to the factory 14 gauge speaker wire were soldered. I also have to giant 6v golf cart batteries in series at about 6' away.

Pros: Cost effective, clean sound.

Cons: Hard to tell who to trust with negative reviews from other customers.

Its ok as far as receivers go, its not the best option, nor worst, so if you hate your lame OEM this is a fine upgrade. Got the ready wiring kit and I had installed in less than 10 minutes. My real issue is Crutchfield's recommended for vehicle list. After opening my 2006 Dodge Dakota and taking measurements when I installed this set it is 100% clear that a double din WILL fit, had I known this before hand I would have went with a touch screen option.

The extra power is nice and clean if you wan't to avoid installing an external amp. It provided more than enough headroom to drown out road noise without quickly becoming fatiguing. I was able to power directly from the wiring harness without any issues. Only downside is the amp is class D and the imaging is less detailed than my older Clarion. No regrets on the purchase but if I had more time would have likely been happier with an external Class A/B amp. It's a great easy upgrade no regrets!

I bought the Sony for my boat cabin and it really fits the bill. I wanted extra power, blue tooth and remote control. A nice feature is an app on the phone that gives you control of the receiver. Crutchfield was very helpful with including everything I needed to hook it up, so the install was very easy. I'm using 6x9 co-axial speakers in pre-made enclosures, so I'm lacking some base and will add a subwoofer next.

Pros: Pairs easily with my phone Good power

Cons: Setting up tone is a bit complicated. Not base, mid and treble but separate bands.

If I could get this radio to work flawlessly then I'd give it 5 stars. However every time I turn up the volume above 45 I get the error message: "Output Error". Crutchfield already sent me a replacement unit and the problem is still persisting. My wiring is flawless with crimped high quality butt connections. And it's hooked up directly to my battery. I don't know what else to do. I used to have a Kenwood head unit and it never caused me any problems with the same wiring. This is really frustrating to spend money on a radio that throws me an error every time I want to bump my music.

Pros: -High quality music output -Nice preset EQ

Cons: -Throws "Output Error" everytime I turn volume above 45

Great features, great sound! Even though this head unity has tons of features, it learning curve isn't too steep and the controls and menus are intuitive. The user interface is well thought out and easy to use, especially the wireless connection which is virtually instant. Hands free calling is super simple as well. The sound is absolutely impressive with my stock speakers in my truck. Having built several high end mobile audio systems in the past I know that this head unit will need a good set of aftermarket speakers and a small powered subwoofer to unlock its full potential. Overall it is an awesome head unit, especially for the price point!

Pros: Sound clarity. Features. Customizable audio settings. Seamless wireless connectivity. Easy hands free calling. Bass boost feature that monitors and prevents distortion. Easy to navigate menus.

Cons: Equalizer function seems a bit weird. Maybe it is the loose nut behind the steering wheel?

I've owned both. the previous model mex-xb100bt came with thicker power and ground wires that you had to run independently. this allowed for more power for the built in amplifier. this one does NOT provide sufficient power to the unit causing it to constantly go into protection mode when turned up to any reasonable level. i give the mex-xb100bt 5 stars, i love it! this one is a dud and i returned it immediately! Do not buy this for the built in amplifier you will be disappointed...

High-Power Class D Amplifier: A built-in 4-channel Class-D amplifier delivers up to a maximum of 45 watts RMS (100 watts Peak) of power per channel; approximately twice that of most head units, and comparable to the power output of a compact, external digital amplifier. The internal digital amplifier features a space-saving design that helps keep the receiver slim and compact.

  • Optimized Layout: Circuitry and components are carefully laid out for low-noise, highly efficient electric power transmission.
  • Precision Power Block Placement: Placing the power block close to the input and amp minimizes power loss, while electrolytic capacitors ensure precise, responsive bass.
  • Heat Ventilation: An oversized heat sink with an optimally designed fin structure ensures efficient ventilation for your amp.
Notes:
  • Because of its high-powered amplifier design, the Sony MEX-XB120BT does require that a separate +12V constant power wire is run to the battery with a separate inline 15A fuse in vehicles with lower than a 15A fuse protecting the factory radio. Check out the "Accessories" tab for wiring kit.
  • This Sony receiver's built-in high-powered amplifier won't work in car audio systems where an outboard factory amplifier will remain active.

CTA-2006 Compliant: The power specifications for the Sony MEX-XB120BT are compliant with the CTA-2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Technology Association (CTA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the MEX-XB120BT are as follows:

  • Continuous Power Output: 45 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
  • Peak Power Output: 100 watts x 4-channels (400 total watts)

6ch/5V Preamp Outputs: The Sony MEX-B120BT is equipped with 5-volt Front, Rear, & Sub pre-amp outputs giving you the ability to connect external amplifiers to your car stereo system. The unit's subwoofer preamp output is non-fading. You can adjust the subwoofer preout's volume level (-6 to +6 dB) independently from the head unit's volume control. You can also select the phase of the subwoofer output from Normal or Reverse.

Note: You can connect a subwoofer to this head unit without the need of a separate power amplifier. Simply connect a single subwoofer (4-8 ohm) directly to head unit's left or right rear speaker leads (but not both). Approximate power output for the direct subwoofer connection is 60 watts RMS. Same subwoofer controls apply.

High-Pass & Low Pass Crossover: The front & rear speaker outputs offer a variable high-pass crossover, while the subwoofer preout offers a variable low pass crossover. The high and low pass crossovers can be set to 80, 100, or 120Hz.

Advanced Sound Engine: Sony's Advanced Sound Engine creates an ideal in-car soundfield with digital signal processing (DSP); including the following technologies -

  • Listening Position: This unit can change the localization of sound by delaying the sound output from each speaker to suit your position, and simulate a natural sound field with the feeling of being in the center of it wherever you sit in the car. You can choose from Front Right, Front Left, Front Center, or Off. You can also set the subwoofer distance of the subwoofer to Near, Normal, or Far.
  • EQ10: Select from a variety of EQ presets like R&B, Rock, Pop, Dance, Hip-Hop, Electronic, Jazz, Soul, Country, Karaoke, Custom, or Off (Flat). The Custom mode allows you to make your own equalizer settings. You can adjust the level (+/-6dB) of 10 different frequency bands - Band 1 (32Hz), Band 2 (63Hz), Band 3 (125Hz), Band 4 (250Hz), Band 5 (500Hz), Band 6 (1khz), Band 7 (2khz), Band 8 (4kHz), Band 9 (8kHz), and Band 10 (16kHz).
  • ClearAudio+: ClearAudio+ reproduces sound by optimizing the digital signal with the Sony recommended sound settings.
  • ExtraBass: Activate ExtraBass at the touch of a button for an instant, low-end boost. Unlike conventional bass boosters, ExtraBass minimizes distortion at all volume levels by automatically adjusting frequency and gain to their optimal positions.
  • Dynamic Stage Organizer (DSO): Sound waves are directional, so if your speakers are in your doors or under your dash, the audio may seem muddy or unclear. Dynamic Stage Organizer adjusts the signal, improving the stereo positioning so music sounds like it's coming from right in front of you.
  • Rear Bass Enhancer (RBE): RBE enhances the bass sound by applying the low-pass filter setting to the rear speakers. This function allows the rear speakers to work as a subwoofer even if there is no subwoofer connected.
  • Digital Sound Enhancement Engine (DSEE): DSEE improves digitally compressed music files by restoring high frequencies lost in the compression process.
  • Advanced Auto Volume (AAV) + Loudness: This feature adjusts the playback volume level of all playback sources to the optimum level. Loudness reinforces bass and treble for clear sound at low volume levels.

Beep Tone: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

Built-in Bluetooth

Bluetooth 3.0: The Sony MEX-B120BT is equipped with built-in Bluetooth (version 3.0), allowing you to make and receive phone calls wirelessly through the receiver; as well as stream music wirelessly from your smartphone to the head unit. In order to use Bluetooth wireless technology, your phone must also be Bluetooth compatible and be able to interpret certain profiles. This unit is compatible with the following Bluetooth Profiles:

  • Hands-Free Communication: HFP 1.6 (Hands Free Profile), PBAB 1.0 (Phone Book Access Profile).
  • Audio Streaming: A2DP 1.3 (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile), AVRCP 1.5 (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile).
Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Sony MEX-B120BT.

Multi-Device Pairing w/ Dual-Phone Connection: Up to nine Bluetooth-compatible devices can be paired to this receiver. You are even able to keep two Bluetooth-enabled phones connected at the same time, so you can make and receive calls from either phone through the head unit. Only one audio device can be connected at a time, which means only one of the two connected phones can stream audio. Once an already paired device is in close proximity to the Sony receiver, the two units will automatically re-connect. The head unit offers three pairing modes - SSP, NFC, & USB Auto.

  • Simple Secure Pairing: With Simple Secure Pairing (SSP), you can easily pair a Bluetooth enabled phone to the Sony MEX-B120BT without having to enter pin codes or go through complicated settings.
  • Near Field Communication (for Android): Android (OS 4.0+) smartphones that have Near Field Communication (NFC) pair simply by touching the Android device's NFC tag to the head unit's NFC tag on its rotary-knob. For older Android smartphones that don't have OS 4.0 or better installed, download the NFC Easy Connect app from Google Play to use the head unit's NFC pairing function.
  • USB Auto (for iPhone): You can pair your Apple iPhone (iOS 5.0+) by simply connecting it to the Sony head unit via USB and activating the Bluetooth function on your Apple device.

Hands-Free Communication w/ External Mic: The Sony MEX-B120BT supports Bluetooth hands-free communication for your Bluetooth enabled cell-phone (such as your iPhone or Android smartphone). Bluetooth hands-free communication helps to minimize distraction while driving by allowing you to control your mobile phone from the head unit, so you don't have to touch your mobile phone. The unit features an external microphone (featuring adjustable gain), so you can carry on your side of the conversation while listening to the caller through your vehicles speakers. And thanks to the latest Hands-Free Profile (HFP 1.6) with wideband speech capability, the MEX-B120BT provides more natural sound quality and details during wireless calls.

  • Answering Calls: Incoming calls can be answered manually or automatically (between 3-10 seconds) through the Sony head unit, while the ring tone is output from your car speakers and the caller's name or phone number is displayed on the head unit's LCD. Incoming calls can also be rejected if desired.
  • Dialing a Number: Using the MEX-B120BT, you can dial a phone number in one of the following ways.
    • Entering Phone #: Allows you to manually dial a phone number using the unit's control dial.
    • Preset Dial: You can store up to 6 contacts in the preset dial for quick dialing.
    • Phone Book: You can store up to 1,000 contacts in the unit's phone book. Up to a 40 character name can be input for each contact.
    • Call History: The unit will store the last 20 calls, allowing you to select a previous phone number quickly from the list.
    • Voice Dial: You can make a call using the voice tags stored on your connected cellular phone.
    • Redial: Use to easily redial the last number you called.
Note: During a conversation, you can switch between the Private Mode (talking directly on your cell phone) and the Hands Free Mode.

Wireless Audio Streaming: The Sony MEX-B120BT supports wireless audio playback (AD2P) and control (AVRCP) of a Bluetooth-enabled smartphone or audio player, plus song/artist information display. You are able to stream your stored music library on your Bluetooth-enabled smartphone, as well as music apps downloaded on your smartphone to the Sony MEX-B120BT for playback.

  • SBC + AAC Codecs: In addition to support for the standard SBC Bluetooth audio codec, the MEX-B120BT offers support of AAC. By supporting AAC, the MEX-B120BT offers better audio performance of the music streamed from your Apple iPod, iPhone, or iPad.
  • Music Browsing: In addition to basic playback functions (Play/Pause, FF/RW, Skip, Random/Repeat) for both stored music and music apps, the MEX-XB120BT provides a Search List of your stored music by Category or Playlist (AVRCP 1.4 phones only; which includes Android 4.0+ and iPhone 5.0+).
  • Song/Artist Information: The head unit will also display your stored music and music app's song information; such as Artist name and Song/Album title (not compatible with all apps).
Note: When an incoming call or outgoing call is in progress from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, audio streaming will be paused so you can take your call. Once the call is finished, your streaming music will resume.

Siri Eyes Free Control (for iPhone): When paired and connected to an iPhone with Siri via Bluetooth, the Sony MEX-B120BT has the ability to access Siri through its front-panel controls and external microphone. Simply activate the "voice dial" function on the MEX-B120BT to engage Siri and use the included microphone to communicate with Siri. Siri's voice will heard through your vehicle's speakers. All Siri functions including hands-free calling, music search, setting reminders, text-messaging, audible navigation, and more can be done through the head unit and its microphone. You can even ask Siri to get directions to a destination and the turn-by-turn instructions will heard through your vehicle's speakers, while the on-screen map still displays on your iPhone with Siri. The head unit's audio is attenuated while Siri provides audible directions.

Note: The head unit will only display hands-free calling and Bluetooth audio information (all other functions of Siri are only audible through the MEX-B120BT; visual data will still need to be viewed from your iPhone).

Android & iPhone Integration

Android Direct Connect via USB: The Sony MEX-B120BT enables playback of stored music and music apps on select Android smartphones through its front-panel USB port. The unit's USB port (1.5A) will also charge your Android device while connected; the vehicle's accessory key must be set to the 'ACC' or 'On' position. There are two types of modes to choose from based on your type of Android smartphone and what content you want to listen to.

  • AOA 2.0 (Stored Music & Music Apps): The Sony MEX-B120BT supports Android Open Accessory 2.0 (AOA 2.0), which lets you connect your Android smartphone (OS 4.1+) to the MEX-B120BT's front-panel USB port and listen to stored music and select music apps from your Android device through the Sony receiver. You'll be able to control basic playback functions such as Play/Pause and Previous/Next Track. Other advanced music navigation will still be done from your Android smartphone's touchscreen. In this mode, the head unit will not display song/artist information; you'll continue to view song/artist information from the Android device's touchscreen. You'll still be able to access other functions and applications from your Android smartphone's touchscreen, while listening to music through the head unit. If you make a call or answer a call from your smartphone while listening to music in this mode, the music will pause until you are finished with the call and then start back up again.
  • MTP (Stored Music w/ Song/Artist Info): The MEX-B120BT also supports MTP for playback & control of stored MP3/WMA music files on your Android (OS 4.0+) device through the Sony receiver's front-panel USB port. In this mode, you get basic playback control (like Play/Pause & Previous/Next Track), plus song/artist information on the receiver's LCD screen. During MTP connection, you cannot use your Android smartphone's touchscreen to control music playback and you cannot select music apps from your smartphone for playback. However, you can continue to listen to stored music on your Android smartphone through the head unit while you check your Calendar, Facebook, Texts, etc on your phone.

Note: Sony does not guarantee operation with all Android devices, regardless of operating system.

iPod/iPhone Direct Connect via USB: The Sony MEX-B120BT supports direct connection of select Lightning or 30-pin Apple iPod/iPhone devices through its front-panel USB port. The MEX-B120BT offers playback of your music library or music apps, music navigation and control, song/artist/album display, and charging of select Apple devices. Simply connect your compatible iPod/iPhone using the cable that came with your Apple device, or purchase another Lightning-to-USB or dock-to-USB cable (sold separately) to be used in the car.

  • Playback Control: The unit offers basic playback controls - such as Play/Pause, Fast Forward/Rewind, Previous/Next Track, and Repeat/Random. Your iPod/iPhone will remain unlocked during connection, so you can continue to control your Apple device from its touchscreen for advanced music browsing and to access additional music apps.
  • Song/Artist Info: The digital media receiver will display your iPod/iPhone's stored music file information; including Track number, Elapsed playing time, Song Title, & Artist/Album Name. The MEX-B120BT will also display song/artist information and station identification from select music apps.
  • 1.5A Charging: The head unit's USB connection provides 1.5A of current to power and charge your connected iPod/iPhone when your vehicle's ignition switch is set to the 'ACC' or 'On' position. If your iPod/iPhone has no initial battery charge, then this unit will not recognize it.
Note: Access to your iPhone's downloaded applications will depend on the availability of a cellular and/or WiFi network for purposes of allowing your iPhone to connect to the Internet.

Customer Q&A

Q
Crutchfield asked: Why did you buy this?
A
higher RMS [ James  Jul 23, 2019 ]
A
Positive reviews by both Crutchfield and other buyers brought it to the top of choices. I really like Sony car stereos (this will be my 3rd current car with one). The 5V pre-amp outputs plus an on-board digital amp creates more options for my set up as it ages and grows. Thx Crutchfield. [ Paul  Jul 14, 2019 ]
A
Based on research, offers best bang for the buck. 40w RMS x4 channels and other necessary features based on opinion. [ Tyler  May 13, 2019 ]

I have always owned Sony Receivers, and always ordered from Crutchfield. I like the 45 watt power in four channels [ Karl  Mar 06, 2019 ]
A
Unlike many who are looking for a way to really pump up their music I'm old and hard of hearing so I'm looking for a stereo that will Bluetooth connect to my phone and play audio books loud and clear. I'll let you know if it works when it arrives and I install it. [ John  Feb 21, 2019 ]

Good price stereo with integrated amp. should be good. [ JASON  Feb 19, 2019 ]

I chose it because of the RMS power and peak power ratings after it was recommended by a advisor after asking what's the most powerful radio crutchfield sold. Actually that sony model got discontinued and I researched the updated model. Now I need 6.5 component speakers with 90db or higher to match the head unit. [ carl  Feb 16, 2019 ]

built in amp [ Jorge  Jan 20, 2019 ]

More powerful speakers do not perform well (low volume) since the factory receiver is low wattage. This receiver has an internal amp that outputs 45 watts, and should greatly improve the performance of the speakers. The built in amp is a good value since you don't have to purchase and wire a separate amp. [ THOMAS  Dec 30, 2018 ]

I recently got some Infinity Primus speakers for my car which are 40W RMS for the rears and 55W RMS for the fronts, so I was expecting to have to use an amp I had lying around, however I didn't want to run new wires through my car and I found this head unit that is perfect for me! it does 45W RMS and peak power of 100W per channel thanks to its built in class D amplifier. You wont find another head unit this powerful for anywhere near the price of this one [ Andy  Dec 28, 2018 ]
A
45 watts RMS per channel. This will replace a 5 months old Kenwood that I'm not satisfied with. Sound is good but just can't put out the volume that my older model Sony did with similar specs. (22 watts RMS.) Sound level doesn't change much from 20 to 35. 35 being maximum level. No distortion, but I need it LOUD ! [ Denny L.  Dec 16, 2018 ]

It appeared to be the best for the money. [ Coby  Oct 04, 2018 ]

I do not have plans on installing an amp and sub. So I wanted a receiver with a high power rating. This one has 45W RMS which is more than double what most all other receivers have (18 - 22W). So I'm basically getting a small amp as well as a receiver. From many reviews this Sony should be great when pushing two front and two rear 6.5" speakers. I bought this from Crutchfield vice Amazon because Crutchfield goes above and beyond on every order; plus they provide tech support. [ RONALD  Sep 29, 2018 ]

Fit mounting box from 11 year old Sony which no longer works, with similar basic features - CD player, remote control. Hopefully not as annoying learning curve as new cars with complex menus which require hours to read....I'd rather be sailing... [ Satisfied Staples Customer  Sep 09, 2018 ]

I have this same deck in another vehicle and I'm very happy with it. Plenty of power without a subwoofer, although a sub would improve it even more. Mustang bounces pretty well without it, though. [ MATT W  Jun 01, 2018 ]

My MEX-XB120BT doesn't seem to be changing folders via a USB stick and USB input. Plays the same folder over and over. There are 4 folders of around 200 songs each. And, only titles are shown?

I put that radio in 2 cars. 1999 SLK230 and in the front I used JL Audio 6 1/2 with separate tweeter. The back speakers are stock and hard to get to. The other car a 1999 E430 and kept the stock bose speakers so far, but when one goes I am definitely going to another JL audio setup. I used some Sony Xplode speakers in our boat and they worked well for a number of years, even though they were not all weather models. The rubber has finally gone. This was after more that 6 years.

Q
How is this XB120BT model different from the previous model, the XB100BT?
[ Jen  Mar 18, 2018 ]
1 answer
A
I think it is almost the same but for some reason I remember the XB100BT had an external fuse holder that may not have fit well in my SLK230. I was surprised to see the change as I was researching them for over a month. All that said I am excited about the new unit, all the features and the APP I can run from my phone. I opted for letting them finish the wiring harness and let me tell you, that made it plug and play. I used to install radios for extra money in college, so I am familiar with car stereo wiring. But for the low cost... and the fact that was almost 40 years ago it was no brainer. Love it, now I am looking to outfit my ML350 ...

I would like to use the built in amp for now, but may upgrade later. Does this model allow one to use an external instead of the built in amp if they choose?

Yes it does have the amp output as well as Sub output which is more likely what you'll end up doing. 45 Watts RMS times 4 is much better than these 1000 watt peak advertised equipment. You could end up pleasantly surprised.

Q
Instead of a separate power/ground harness with a 15 amp fuse, is it built into the wiring harness in the latest model? If so, does the wiring harness incuse power/ground wires that one would connect to the battery?
[ Jacob  Mar 08, 2018 ]

A
This radio and stronger amp are one part now. There is no separate box to need to place somewhere. Because of this change in the design, there is only one harness on the radio for connecting the wires for it to run. This receiver does still pull more power than a typical model and so if the vehicle's radio circuit has a 15A or higher fuse, you can use the power wire provided by the adapting harness to install this radio. If that fuse is smaller than 15A, you will need to run a new power wire. Sony does not include that new power wire, but we have made a kit with it and the fuse you should put on that new power wire: http://www.crutchfield.com/p_007CK12/item.html My Bio: http://www.crutchfield.com/Support/Bio.aspx?bio=101

The 15 amp fuse is built into the back of the unit, next to the harness. There are power and ground wires.
[ JOHN  Mar 28, 2018 ]

I did a regular harness connection no extra power/ground connection y try de power peak and this model have the same power of mex-xb100bt, this new model come with a built-in fuse on power wire inside connector. No need of extra power/ground connector.super loud and clear no noise or statics in background sound at all, Bluetooth mic works fine but it's not the best. Works great in 6*9 speakers lot of Bass. 3 extra out lines for front/rear/Bass amp. Built-in Low and high frequency filter so you can hear every detail on music. Worth every dollar.
[ rafael  Mar 27, 2018 ]

The harness I received had small wires from already connected for power/ground (Crutchfield made connections for me). I had to cut/tape wires to original harness then run new to battery. Not sure if that helps or not
[ Todd  Mar 27, 2018 ]
A
There is a 15 amp fuse on the Head unit only. You have to run your own 14awg wire directly to the battery. I opted to buy a in-line 15amp fuse for $3 just for precautions. Im sure you can get power directly off the harness but if you are running speakers that demand high power then you mine as well run your power and ground separate....
