About the Sony MDX-F5800

If you're a MiniDisc fan, then you probably get tired of having to connect your MD player to your car stereo's auxiliary input in order to listen to your favorite recordings. Sony's MDX-F5800 MD receiver solves that problem for you. It plays all of your MDs, even those recorded in Long Play mode — both LP2 and LP4!

The MDX-F5800 has lots of power (23.2 watts RMS/52 peak x 4 channels) to make your tunes sound good. The EQ3 3-band equalizer shines them up with a little sonic polish. Sony's Dynamic Soundstage Organizer really shines if your front speakers are low in the car. It raises the soundstage up to dash level, making your music sound more clear and vibrant.

Sony's SSIR-EXA tuner will pull in stations your factory radio never heard of. Add a Sony CD changer so you can play CDs in your vehicle too! Two sets of preamp outputs make it easy to amplify your full-range speakers, or to add a powered subwoofer for intense bass. A low-pass filter keeps the lows clean.

Product Research

Changer Controls

MiniDisc Long Playback (MDLP): The MDX-F5800 can play MiniDiscs recorded in MDLP2 and MDLP4 modes, as well as standard mode.

MD Group Function: The MD Group playback function is convenient to locate desired tracks within a group from a large number of tracks, or tracks that have been recorded in MDLP2 or MDLP4.

Wide Bit-Stream Processing: This unit is capable of processing MiniDiscs recorded in 20-bit Wide Bit-Stream, resulting in music with greater detail and better resolution, particularly in dynamic passages. The unit is also completely compatible with traditional 16-bit MD software.

Dynamic Soundstage Organizer (DSO): Sony's Dynamic Soundstage Organizer uses proprietary circuitry to induce subtle phase shifts, simulating a sound source that is placed higher than the actual speakers in the vehicle. For example, when the DSO function is used in a vehicle equipped with speakers mounted low in the front doors, it creates virtual speakers in the dash to raise the soundstage. This unit offers three levels of DSO, each with a larger and higher soundstage. The DSO settings are displayed as 1, 2 or 3 blue bars on the right side of the faceplate. You can store the DSO setting for each source.

EQ3: You may select one of the following EQ presets: Xplod, Vocal, Club, Jazz, New Age, Rock, or Custom. Each EQ3 setting is displayed in blue as a small 3-band, 5-segment graph to represent the low, mid, and high frequency settings. For each preset, you can adjust the following frequencies: 60 Hz (Low), 1 kHz (Mid), and 10 kHz (High). The level of each frequency can be adjusted from +10 dB to -10 dB in 1 dB increments.

Source Tone Memory: Each source (AM/FM/MD/Changer) can store its own EQ3 levels.

XM Satellite Radio Controls: This unit can control an optional Sony XM tuner (sold separately). The optional tuner, along with an antenna and subscription, will allow you to receive XM Satellite Radio. XM Satellite Radio programming features up to 100 channels of digital-quality music, news, talk, sports, entertainment, and children's programming.

Repeat Play: The MDX-F5800 can repeat the current track or repeat tracks within the current group.

Shuffle Play: This unit can play tracks in the current group in random order, or play the tracks on the current disc in random order.

SSIR-EXA Tuner: The SSIR-EXA tuner can automatically adjust the tuner's bandwidth depending upon environmental conditions. This "Adaptive Reception" feature can switch from a "wide" mode, which decreases the tuner's selectivity but results in better frequency response, to an "auto" mode which adjusts the tuner for a good balance between frequency response and minimum station-to-station interference. Note: The Adaptive Reception feature cannot be turned off.

Best Tuning Memory (BTM): This feature selects stations with the strongest signals within the selected band and stores them in order of their frequency.

Station Memo: You can assign a name of up to 8 characters in length to each tuner preset station. Station Memos can be used with the List-up function to locate a station.

Rear/Subwoofer Preamp Outputs: The MDX-F5800 has a set of preamp outputs that can be set for Rear or Subwoofer output. When Subwoofer is selected, the outputs have a selectable low-pass filter (78 Hz, 125 Hz, or Off) and the output level is user-adjustable from -10 to +10.

MD Text Display: This unit will display MD disc and track titles that have been pre-recorded. This receiver will not allow you to enter disc/track titles for MDs, it will only display titles that have been recorded.

Shock Resistant Memory: This unit is equipped with a shock-resistant memory for skip-resistant play.

Remote Compatibility: This receiver can be controlled by an optional wireless remote (item 158RMX114) and an optional wired rotary commander (item 158RMX4S).

Cellular Mute Lead: This unit is equipped with a lead that mutes audio output when a cellular call is received, then restores the level once the call is over. To use this feature, you must have a cellular phone with a muting output that can be connected to the cellular mute lead.

45-Degree Installation: For flexibility of installation, this unit can be mounted between 0 (horizontal) and 45 degrees.

Changer Controls

Repeat/Shuffle Play: When a MD or CD changer (including an MP3 compatible changer) is connected this unit can repeat the current track, the current album (MP3), or the current disc. Shuffle play can include playing the tracks in random order on the current album (MP3), current disc, current changer (when one or more changers are connected), or all tracks on all connected units. Note: Shuffle All will not shuffle tracks between MD units and CD units.

Control of Multiple Changers: A maximum of 5 CD changers, or a maximum of 5 MD changers may be connected to this receiver. When connecting CD and MD changers, you may connect up to a total of 7 changers (but there must not be more than 5 of one type of changer). When connecting more than one changer to this receiver, you must use item 158XAC30.

CD Text Capable: When used with a compatible changer and a CD Text encoded CD, this unit will display the CD Text information.

Display Illumination/Clock Display: Pressing the power button once will turn off audio output, but the clock display and face/button illumination remain on. This makes the clock display and face/button illumination operate as "Keyed" functions, instead of "Unit On" only. To turn the unit off completely, you must press the OFF button for two seconds; if the unit is turned off in this manner, the clock display and face/button illumination operate as "Unit On" functions. Note: When installing in a vehicle without an accessory power wire at the radio location, you must turn the radio completely off (this defeats keyed operation), or you may wire the accessory power wire of this radio to an alternate source of accessory power to retain keyed clock and face/button illumination operation.
