Seriously small amp

Sony knows that many vehicles just don't have space for a big amplifier, so they've created the XMS400D 4-channel amp. This tiny powerhouse will blow your mind — blasting your front and rear speakers with 45 watts RMS each from a chassis that's the size of a big candy bar.

High- and low-pass filters

You can't bridge this amp, but you can use the onboard switchable high- and low-pass filters to run small subs with the rear channels and full-range speakers with the front channels. The amp will accept preamp or speaker-level signals, so it'll hook up to just about any system.

Looking for bass

Got a Sony receiver with Mega Bass but no subs yet? This amp connects easily to your system, and the extra power will make your speakers sing. If you've got aftermarket speakers in your car, turn on Mega Bass and you'll hear a night-and-day difference in the bass.

Installed a Kenwood/Polk Audio system in a 1963 Ford Fairlane and thought it sounded pretty good although the sound distorted beyond volume level 24. I then installed this Sony amplifier at the recommendation of a Crutchfield rep. Holy cow! Best sounding stereo system I've had in any car I've owned. Bass is deep and clean. Mid-range and highs are crisp and bright. Spent a total of about $450. Excellent value and quality. Very happy.

Pros: Great value and outstanding performance.

Cons: None

Very good little amp, mounted in my glove box. Drives my aftermarket Hertz speakers well but also brought my stock speakers to life.

Pros: Compact size makes it easy to mount. Good power considering the size.

Cons: Lack of adjustments.

Very compact and fit well into the limited space available in my 1966 VW bus. Easy to wire and set up. Connected to a Retrosound head set this unit does provide some much needed body to the overall sound coming out of the four speaker system.

Pros: Compact design, easily installed.

Cons: Good sound quality but not ground shaking.

Great little amp! Running speaker level in my 17' f250 and has 0 noise. Wire it up and forget it. Pulls power off of my harness, so no need to make a run to the battery, and that folks is priceless. Livened up my OEM ford speakers in my F-250.

Pros: Sounds clean and runs cool. Powers off of my oem harness. Super small and mounts behind the dash. No gains to jack with. Signal sensing remote turn on works flawlessly.

Cons: Rear channels non bridgeable.

Small in size but powerful in output. It fit extremely well in the 4 din enclosure and makes my Sony AX sound so good. I would highly recommend this Sony amp. It is smaller than an old school blackboard eraser.

Pros: Price, good output, small size, great price.

Cons: Do not forget the remote power connection.

This is a nice amp. Its has 0 amp noise and gives quality sound . I would have given it 5 stars however I also own the alpine mini amp in another vehicle and the alpine is louder and is also a clean sounding mini amp. I purchased the sony along with the ax200 head unit and 4 jl audio c2 coax speakers. I havnt purchased the w6v3 10 yet but once i do im sure this will be one nice system. The little sony mini amp is doing a great job.

Pros: Easy mount and hook up. Great sound

Cons: None

Wow! I had installed Sony Speakers in my doors a few months ago, but They didn't seem to add the kick I was looking for. My car, 2014 Mazda 3, doesn't allow for deck upgrades so I thought that this was the perfect little upgrade. This really makes the speakers bump and compliments the highs and lows. I used to play my stereo on about 20-25 for average listening and now I only go to about 12 for the same volume. It's way better than I could have imagined. This is a great investment if you are looking for something loud, but not too intense.

Pros: Small, Quiet (Amp noise), LOUD! sound to speakers, easy install.

Cons:

Nice little high quality amp

Nice little high quality amp. I use it to drive 4 high frequency speakers in my car. Sony used high quality wires on the set of connectors that came with the amplifier. I was surprised to see a thick conductor under a thin layer of the isolation, usually it's the other way around.

Pros: High quality amp Really low noise Does rated 4x45W - it's CEA-2006 certified. High efficiency digital design.

Cons: Doesn't have sensitivity adjustments, but If you use it with a DSP or an active crossover it doesn't matter.

If you're not looking for overpowering your system to bust out the eardrums of the person in the car next to you, this is a nice little amp. I used it to replace a Boss CE-102 to give me an additional channel of amplification. I was a bit apprehensive about buying it because it doesn't have it's own volume control, but the integrated pass filters provide enough control over the sound that you don't really need it.

Pros: sounds great price versatility stability

Cons: no volume control

Product Research

Features

Overview: The Sony XM-S400D is a very compact amplifier, designed for moderately sized mobile audio systems. It is ideal for amplifying front and rear speakers in a vehicle with a factory or aftermarket stereo. You can also drive small subwoofers instead of full range speakers on the rear channels. The XM-S400D is a Class D 4-channel stereo amplifier that outputs 45 watts per channel RMS at 4 ohms. It comes with RCA and high-level input harnesses, and a power/speaker output harness.

Note: The XM-S400D cannot be bridged for driving a single subwoofer.

Crossovers: The XM-S400D is equipped with a 120Hz high-pass filter (HPF) for the front channels, and a 120Hz low-pass filter (LPF) for the rear channels. The HPF will filter out low frequencies from the front channels to eliminate distortion. The LPF will filter out voices and higher frequencies from the rear channels when they are used for driving subwoofers. (The LPF should be turned off when full range speakers are connected to the rear channels.) Both crossovers have a 12dB per octave slope, and are controlled with separate on/off switches.

Input Select: The Input Select switch lets you set the amplifier to match the input connection. If you have connected the amp to one pair of inputs, the switch should be set at "2CH." All four outputs are fed the signal from the 2-channel input. If you have connected the amp with two pairs of inputs, the switch should be set to "4CH".

High-level Sensing: When the speaker-level input is used, the amplifier can sense when an audio signal is present on the input and will turn on the amplifier. The amp will automatically turn itself off when no audio signal is detected. This eliminates the need for connecting a remote turn-on wire.

Connections: The Sony XM-S400D features harnesses for all power and signal connections:

  • Power/Speaker Outputs Harness: The 40" main harness has connections for power, ground, and amp turn-on, as well as the outputs for front and rear speakers. The speaker outputs follow the industry standard color coding. The wires connected to the power and ground wires should be at least 14-gauge.
  • Fuse: The amplifier has a 15A ATM (mini-blade-type) fuse installed next to the power/speaker harness plug.
  • Input Harnesses: The amp has a 10-pin Molex receptacle for either the line-level or speaker-level input harness. The line-level harness has two pairs of female RCAs. The 39" speaker-level input harness has wires for connecting the speaker output wires from the head unit. The wires follow the industry standard color coding.

Customer Q&A

Q
Crutchfield asked: Why did you buy this?
A
I have a Honda Accord Hybrid, so I have to be mindful of the power draw from the electrical system. This little Sony allows me to tap into the same 15 amp circuit as the factory stereo, so I don't have to run a power cable to the battery. It's also very small in size, so it can zip-tie it to the back of the factory stereo for easy installation. [ J  Aug 30, 2019 ]

Would this fit beneath the receiver portion of the Sony AX5000 Digitial multimedia receiver?
[ ARTURO  Sep 06, 2019 ]

Depends of vehicle enclosure. I had a lot of room with a Chevy Savanna 2500. The amp is small in size and might fit your enclosure under the receiver. This was a good fit and purchase for me.

Q
Will this amp attach to the sony head unit ? Or, will it need to be mounted somewhere else under the dash?
[ James  Jun 23, 2019 ]

It does need to be mounted elsewhere. There are small tangs for 2 screws, one on each end of the longer sides of the amp.
[ DEAN  Jul 03, 2019 ]

It is not attached to the head unit, but it is small enough to be put with the radio in the same opening.

It will need to be mounted behind the dash.

[ Karen  May 03, 2019 ]

A
Eazy peazy. Input, output, power, and remote on. It does a good job of amplifying. Use high level inputs for a factory radio, or use low lever for an after market is the recommendation. I like it just the opposite for ridiculous amplification of my stock radio. You will have to route the power conductor to the battery post. No biggie. Crutchfield directions rock. For the remote on, you will use the remote on from your stereo. If your stereo does not have a remote on, you will use an aux fuse that only comes on when the ignition is on (windshield wiper fuse for example) using a 'add-a-fuse' fuse holder. Amazon sells them. Good luck. You've got this.
[ ROBERT  May 10, 2019 ]
A
No its probably one of the easiest 4 cannels you can get, basically a wire harness goes in and a wire harness goes out, its about as simple as that
[ CHANCE  May 10, 2019 ]
Q
Under "What's in the box" it says: 40" Power/speaker output harness. When I add this amp to shopping cart, Crutchfield suggests buying an amp kit. It already has 40" of power and speaker wires, so do I need the additional wiring kit like it suggests?

Q
Is this and plug and play with Sony XAV-AX5000?
[ Tom  Dec 23, 2018 ]
3 answers
A
Plug and play yes with the RCA Jack's, but you will still be required to supplya both a 12 switched and a 12 volt constant on supply and a negative ground. The you must still run wires for your speakers
[ John  Dec 23, 2018 ]
A
Hi Tom, It all depends on what you mean by plug and play. If there is a harness kit available from Crutchfield that allow you to simply plug in the speaker wires without any splicing the answer is YES! In my case, the optional harness kit plugged into the Amp and the speaker wires had to be spliced into the radio harness connector. This took all of 1/2 hour to do. Best regards, Phil D.

Q
Should I buy an amplifier power wiring kit for this or will this work fine with the current wiring? I have a 2003 Honda CRV EX with Sony WX-900BT.
[ Jesse  Sep 25, 2018 ]
2 answers
A
An amp kit is preferred for ease of installation, although most are overkill. This amp only draws 15amps so try to find something that is for a 400w amplifier so you dont need to run a very large power cable through your car.
[ Ryan  Sep 25, 2018 ]
A
It comes with a universal harness. If you have a plug to play option and don't like splicing wires, go that route

Q
Is there anyway to add a sub to it?
[ Mark  Feb 15, 2017 ]
1 answer
A
The rear channels of this amp has a selectable low pass filter to drive one or two subwoofers. Choose subwoofers with high efficiency since you only have 45 watts per channel to play with. A ported box will help you gain more volume as well.
[ norurb  Feb 15, 2017 ]
Q
I want to use 2 channels and would like to know how much the nominal power (RMS) for each channel is in that case. I know that the amplifier delivers a power rating of 45 watts per channel if I use 4 channels. I want to use 2 channels and do not know whether the power for 2 channels is 2x 45 watt or 2 x 45 + 45 = 90 watts. Can someone help?
