AudioControl 2XS

Excellent piece. Can be used to divide frequencies from a normal full range system for a subwoofer or to divide frequencies within the full bandwidth for active component speakers with separate amplification. Very small in size and easy to set up.

Pros: Small size; Precise frequency filtering. Line driver for better signal strentgh.

Cons: Crossover modules are very fragile and easy to bend. Must be extremely careful when installing and uninstalling different frequency modules.

If it wasn't for Audio Control car Audio wouldn't sound as good

I purchased a Pioneer AVH-X5800BHS from Crutchfield for the network mode active crossover ability to run some Focal PS165 6.5" woofers and Peerless NE25VTS-04 1" Silk Dome Tweeters, which are superior to the Focal aluminum tweeters. I couldn't get the gains set right on the 4 channel amplifier feeding the tweeters and woofers and things just didn't sound right no matter what I tried. I have had a lot of experience with Audio Control equipment including their LC2i, DQ61, EQX, and now this fantastic 2XS. The quality of their products is fantastic! The Pioneer head unit in network mode is capable of crossover slopes from 6 db/octave to 24 db/octave and the points are fully adjustable. Comparing this 2XS to the Pioneer set at 18 db/octave at about the same crossover point (4k Pioneer vs 3.6k 2XS) there is a noticeable difference in SQ, which is partly or all attributable to the line driver portion of this unit. Tweeters went from sounding harsh in the upper vocals to absolutely beautiful sounding. This thing made a very noticeable difference in SQ and now I can run the Pioneer HU in standard mode so I have my fade and other features back that you lose when in network mode. Why some people purchase passive crossovers for a couple hundred when they can have an active crossover that is fully adjustable for half that boggles my mind. With active crossovers you don't need as much amplifier power and the signal to the speaker is as pure as it can get so long as you are using good speaker wire

Pros: Superior sound quality, smaller than many active crossovers, line driver and subsonic filter, can minimize gains on amplifiers for lowest possible noise floor, cheaper than some passive crossovers, less powerful amplifiers are needed because the filtering is done before the amplifier instead of after. Note: I ordered this same thing from Sonix and then later ordered another one from Crutchfield two days later and I now have my Crutchfield order but not the Sonix one yet. Crutchfield is the best!

Cons: You will need more amplifiers compared to using a passive crossover. switching resisters to change crossover points may intimidate novices but then again active crossovers are for serious audiophiles.

Great X-over

AOei from Pacific Palisades, CA on 5/5/2013

This is my second 2XS purchase for yet another car. Works just fine and as advertised by the manufacturer. Biggest positive is the configurable X-over point. Really simple to do if you get a 14pin DIP socket... no need to solder the resistors... just cut the leads shorter, bend, and insert into the socket holes; the resistors aren't going anywhere... no matter how much the 2XS shakes!

Pros: Quality of construction and configurability.

Cons: None except maybe the cost... but sometimes you just have to pay to play!

Great for home audio too.

I use a resistor module to change the crossover frequency from 90 hertz to 130. Homemade sealed sub cabinets with Rockford 15 inch Punch subs make a great sounding home system. Power the 2XS with a 12V wall plug in transformer, and you're good to go. AudioControl products are made near Seattle, and are really well constructed.

Pros: You can control both low pass and high pass outputs to perfectly balance the sub(s) and speakers. By not having a variable crossover design, the sound is as pure as can be. 3rd order, or 18 dB/octave, takes out low frequency signals from the speakers sharply below the crossover point, and lets you play music at fairly loud levels without distortion from speakers that can't handle much below 70 hertz - basically all bookshelf speakers. This is especially important at 90 hertz.

Cons: Absolutely none!
