About the Ring Video Doorbell (2020 Release)

Emily S.

An affordable way to keep an eye on your home

The kids next door lose their basketball in our yard a lot. When they ring our Ring Video Doorbell, I'm able to answer from wherever I am to tell them I'll toss it over the fence as soon as I can. The two-way talk feature lets me remain physically distant, but still able to have a nice, neighborly chat. I can even keep an eye on things on the rare occasions these days when I'm not at home, too.

New features

The previous version of this budget-friendly model offered a 720p view of the front door, while this one delivers a crisper 1080p view — at the same affordable price point. Ring has also improved the audio quality, night vision, and motion options in this 2020 model.

Ring Video Doorbell lets you see guests

Hardwired or battery-powered — your choice

If your current doorbell operates at a voltage between 8 and 24 volts AC, you can connect this second-generation Ring Video Doorbell to the existing wiring. Hardwiring this way keeps Ring's battery charged and allows it to trigger your existing chime when someone rings the bell.

No doorbell at all? No problem. The battery can be charged with the included micro USB cable, and the mounting setup has been revamped to make it easier to remove for charging. Without an existing doorbell, you'll also need to keep your phone handy for notifications, or purchase Ring Chime or Chime Pro for alerts while you're at home.

Optional cloud storage

The camera streams live footage to the app 24/7, but if you want to save or send video clips, you'll need a Ring Protect plan. Ring Protect is a subscription-based cloud storage service. The basic package ($4.99/month or $49.99/year) covers a single camera and allows you to save and share your Ring videos from that camera. You get a free, 30-day trial subscription when you activate your Ring device.

Installing multiple Ring devices? The Ring Protect Plus plan ($10/month or $100/year) includes cloud storage for unlimited Ring devices at a single location.

Product Research

Features

Overview: The Ring Video Doorbell (2nd generation) instantly alerts you on your smartphone, tablet, or computer when someone approaches your front door or rings your doorbell, and lets you see and hear who it is before you answer. The Video Doorbell has a built-in camera that streams HD video via Wi-Fi, and two-way audio to let you speak with your visitor. It features Advanced Motion Detection with customizable motion zones, and enhanced Wi-Fi. The Ring Video Doorbell has a built-in rechargeable battery with a hardwire option. Installation takes about 5 minutes, with the included hardware and tools.

Camera: The Video Doorbell has a wide-angle lens with a 155° field of view. The camera produces bright 1080p HD video in a Live View that you can watch on your phone, tablet, or computer. When motion is detected, a notification will be sent to your smart device or computer through the Ring app, allowing you to view the live video stream. Built-in infrared LEDs enable night vision after the sun goes down.

Motion Zones: Motion Zones allow you to define specific areas that you want the Ring Doorbell to monitor for movement. You can determine the size and shape of the Motion Zone in the Ring app by "drawing" the box in the app. Other zones, where there is frequent activity that causes false alerts, can be designated as non-active. Other Motion Settings include scheduling and sensitivity. You can schedule brief interruption in coverage to avoid triggering alerts caused by expected activity. A slider in the app menu lets you fine tune the sensitivity from "People Only" motion to "All Activity.

Weather Resistant: The Video Doorbell is water resistant, so it performs well in inclement weather and temperature extremes (-5°F to 120°F).

Installation: The 2nd generation Ring Video Doorbell is designed to replace an existing doorbell, and is compatible with most AC-powered door chimes (8-24 volts). Even if you don't have an existing doorbell, you can install the Video Doorbell and power it for months with the built-in rechargeable battery. The new Video Doorbell has a new mounting bracket that makes installation easier, and provides for quick removal of the battery for charging.

Wi-Fi: The Ring Video Doorbell operates on an 802.11 b/g/n, 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi connection. It requires a minimum upload speed of 1 Mbps, however, 2 Mbps is recommended for best streaming performance.

Works With Alexa: The Ring Video Doorbell lets you enjoy hands-free monitoring with select Alexa-enabled devices. You can view live video from the video doorbell on your Echo Show, or use it to watch recorded video. The Echo Dot can be used to hear custom notifications and for two-way talk.

Ring App: The free Ring - Almost Home app pulls together all of your Ring devices, including Video Doorbells and Security Cameras. The app sends you an instant alert when someone triggers a motion sensor, or rings your Ring Video Doorbell. You'll be able to see, hear, and speak to anyone on your property using your smart device. In addition, the app lets you create a virtual Neighborhood Watch and receive alerts from your neighbors. In the app, you can zoom and pan for a better look, customize the Motion Zones, times for receiving (or not receiving) alerts, and how often to be notified for motion events. The Ring App is available for Apple iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch running iOS 10.0 or later, and for Android devices running version 5.0 and up. The app also works with Windows 10 and Mac OS.

Optional Protection Plans: The Ring Video Doorbell watches the front door of your home in real time, with live view and 2-way talk, and provides instant alerts to your smartphone or tablet. If you have Ring security cameras or the Ring Alarm System, you also get live views and instant notifications. A free 30-day trial of Ring Protect Plus is included when you initially set up the Ring Video Doorbell. Ring Protection Plans do not require contracts or long-term commitments. Customer Q&A

Q
My current Arlo doorbell calls our phones any time the doorbell is pressed, and there is no way to turn this off. When my son is in class in college, he does not want the doorbell calling his phone. Does the Ring have an option to NOT have it call your phone, but still record video and ring your door chime in your house?
