About the Ring Video Doorbell

An affordable way to keep an eye on your home
An affordable way to keep an eye on your home
The kids next door lose their basketball in our yard a lot. When they ring our Ring Video Doorbell, I'm able to answer from wherever I am to tell them I'll toss it over the fence as soon as I can. The two-way talk feature lets me remain physically distant, but still able to have a nice, neighborly chat. I can even keep an eye on things on the rare occasions these days when I'm not at home, too.
New features
The previous version of this budget-friendly model offered a 720p view of the front door, while this one delivers a crisper 1080p view — at the same affordable price point. Ring has also improved the audio quality, night vision, and motion options in this 2020 model.

Hardwired or battery-powered — your choice
If your current doorbell operates at a voltage between 8 and 24 volts AC, you can connect this second-generation Ring Video Doorbell to the existing wiring. Hardwiring this way keeps Ring's battery charged and allows it to trigger your existing chime when someone rings the bell.
No doorbell at all? No problem. The battery can be charged with the included micro USB cable, and the mounting setup has been revamped to make it easier to remove for charging. Without an existing doorbell, you'll also need to keep your phone handy for notifications, or purchase Ring Chime or Chime Pro for alerts while you're at home.
Optional cloud storage
The camera streams live footage to the app 24/7, but if you want to save or send video clips, you'll need a Ring Protect plan. Ring Protect is a subscription-based cloud storage service. The basic package ($3.99/month or $39.99/year)* covers a single camera and allows you to save and share your Ring videos from that camera. You get a free, 30-day trial subscription when you activate your Ring device.
Installing multiple Ring devices? The Ring Protect Plus plan ($10/month or $100/year) includes cloud storage for unlimited Ring devices at a single location.

More details on the Ring Video Doorbell

Product Research
Features
Overview: The Ring Video Doorbell (2020 Release) is the 2nd Generation of the classic Video Doorbell. It features a built-in rechargeable battery, and connects to your 2.4GHz home Wi-Fi network. When someone approaches your front door or rings your doorbell, the Video Doorbell instantly alerts you, allowing you to see and hear who's there before you answer it. The camera streams Full HD video, while the two-way audio lets you speak with your visitor. The Video Doorbell (2020 Release) comes with security and mounting hardware, plus a USB charging cable. This model has a faceplate with a Venetian Bronze finish.
Camera: The Video Doorbell features a wide-angle lens with a wide 155° (horizontal) field of view. The camera produces bright 1080p Full HD video in a live view that you can watch on your smartphone, tablet, or computer. Advanced Motion Detection can trigger real-time notifications, so you can keep up with what's happening at home. Customizable motion zones let you define the areas you want to monitor, eliminating most false notifications. You can also fine-tune the sensitivity from "All Activity" to "People Only," if desired. Built-in infrared LEDs enable night vision after the sun goes down.
Wi-Fi: The Ring Video Doorbell operates on an 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi connection on the 2.4 GHz band. A minimum upload speed of 2 Mbps is recommended for best streaming performance.
Weather Resistant: The Video Doorbell has a water resistance rating of IPX4, and is resistant to inclement weather and temperature extremes (-5°F to 120°F).
Power Options: The Video Doorbell (2nd Generation) is powered by a built-in rechargeable battery. When the battery level gets low, you can easily remove the unit and charge it using the included Micro USB cable. If you are replacing a hardwired doorbell, you can hardwire the Video Doorbell to the existing wires or transformer for continuous charging. (Must supply 8-24VAC, 40VA max, 50/60Hz).
Installation: The Video Doorbell should be installed approximately 4 feet above the ground for best performance. If replacing an existing doorbell that is higher than 4 feet, a wedge kit is available for purchase from Ring. The bracket mounts first, then the doorbell snaps into place on the bracket. If mounting to stucco, brick, or concrete, you should use the included wall anchors when installing. Torx security screws (and screwdriver) are included to secure the doorbell to the bracket.
Optional Doorbell Chimes: Ring's optional Chime or Chime Pro can be added to your Video Doorbell. Whenever the doorbell sends out a notification, you'll be able to hear it on the Chime/Chime Pro, even if you're not near your smartphone. You can set up multiple alert tone and adjust the volume of the notifications in the Ring - Always Home app. You can also activate the Do Not Disturb mode for those times when you don't want to hear the notifications. The Chime Pro adds a Wi-Fi extender to boost your network signal and eliminate dead zones.
Ring App: The free Ring - Always Home app pulls together all of your Ring devices, including Video Doorbells and Security Cameras. The app sends you an instant alert when someone triggers a motion sensor, or rings your Ring Video Doorbell. You'll be able to see, hear, and speak to anyone on your property using your smart device. In addition, the app lets you create a virtual Neighborhood Watch and receive alerts from your neighbors. In the app, you can zoom and pan for a better look, customize the Motion Zones, times for receiving (or not receiving) alerts, and how often to be notified for motion events. The Ring App is available for Apple iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch running iOS 14.0 or later, and for Android devices running version 9.0 and up. The Ring desktop app has been discontinued, however, all of your settings and Ring features will be accessible in your account on Ring.com.
Amazon Alexa Enabled: The Ring Doorbell (2nd Generation) is compatible with Alexa-enabled devices. Using the Alexa Voice Assistant, you can use voice commands to hear custom notifications and use the Two-Way Talk feature with Echo Dot, and view video on the Echo Show.
Optional Protection Plans: The Ring Always Home app keeps you connected to your home in real time, with instant alerts sent directly to your smartphone or tablet. If you have Ring security cameras or Video Doorbells, you also get live view and 2-way talk. A free 30-day trial of Ring Protect Plus is included when you initially set up your Ring device. Ring Protection Plans do not require contracts or long-term commitments. You may cancel your subscription at any time. As of July 1, 2022, there are two subscription plans available:
