A 3" wide putty knife worked better, because the tool has a blunt front edge that will not slide under the panel. A design compromise that makes the tool non-functional.

Door panel-removal tool

This is an excellent-made tool, and definitely a requirement for those that have had no experience with removing molded-door panels before.
Pros: Excellent tool to have.
Cons: Ask your friends first to see if they already have one before you get one - unless you're in the business of popping out door panels on a regular basis, you'll only be using this tool one time. I only found out a friend of mine had the same tool AFTER I already received mine and used it.

Works better than a flathead screwdriver
JCool from Connecticut on 5/28/2015
This works a lot better than a flathead screwdriver, it's much wider and angled. Less likely to do panel damage. My advice for door panels, don't push too far into the panel, start slowly and peek in to find the pegs. I was too eager at first and got panel glue all over the tool.
Pros: Works better than a flathead screwdriver on door panels
Cons: Not sure it's worth price tag but I'm glad I have it now

Does the job with exceptions
JJ from Columbus, OH on 2/9/2015
I ordered this tool because I've used screwdrivers in the past to pry apart panels. The screwdriver works great with a little duct or electrical tape on it to prevent scratching. The problem with a screw driver is it is a small point of entry and thus a small point of force. It greatly increases the possibility of cracking or breaking one of your door clamps upon exertion. This tool in theory and most of the design is great. The problem with the tool is that the front lip is not angled but rather it's flat. This in turn can cause you to knick up visible portions of your trim pieces. Being that it's already so thick, it makes it quite impossible to cover the end with tape as you would a screwdriver. You end up using the screw driver to start the process and finish by prying with the removal tool. Not too efficient.
Pros: Sturdy, greater area to apply force
Cons: Too thick at head, metal can scratch paint

Door Panel Removal Tool

Tool worked as advertised. Removed panels cleanly without damage.
Pros: Right size and shape for the job.
Cons: The picture in the instructions didn't show enough detail about where to place the tool on the edge of the panel. On my first try I tried to insert it between the weather striping and the panel, not knowing that the weather stripping was part of the panel. After I figured out to pry between the weather stripping and the door, the tool worked beautifully.

Not necessary and can scratch paint
stock audio from my car on 6/16/2013
I purchased this tool due to the recommendation of my online advisor. I definitely feel like I just got up sold. They recommended this as a needed item for my subaru. The thing is this is specifically for GM parts. Maybe for specific applications, this is a lifesaver, but it was not needed for mine and it would be overpriced even if it was. This is simply a flat metal pry tool with a notch to fit the clips. It is made of cheap sheet metal and couldn't have cost more the $0.50 to make. It needs a hard coating such as plasti-coat to prevent scratching your vinyl and paint. I wrapped it in masking tape for the same effect. I could've done my job by simply wrapping a stiff putty knife in tape. In the end, I thought my whole purchase from crutchfield was still a good deal, but this was a disappointment and I feel like they represented it as necesary when it was not. It might be needed for your GM, but was definitely not for me. And, even if necesary, the quality of the tool leaves much to be desired.
Pros: Maybe it is need if you have a GM
Cons: Cheaply made, not needed for my subaru, will scratch your paint.

Not happy
Richard from El Dorado Ks on 2/3/2013
Although this tool is designed to be helpful after installing my speakers I wish that I had not used or paid for this tool. I have installed hundreds of speakers over the years and in order to do so I have removed may door panels but I have never damaged as much of a door panel as I did this time using this tool! It just seems to apply pressure in such a way that it leads to damage to the panel and the plastic clips used to secure the panel to the door. In the future it would be nice if Crutchfield would supply replacement clips or at least offer them for purchase.

Great Basic Tool
Jake W from Corning, NY on 7/6/2012
This tool is much bigger than what the picture shows or maybe it was just me. It's pretty thick so you need to start at a section that is easy to pry up. I did not take this advice but if your worried about your doors wrapping the ends in electric tape could help. My doors came off easy with this tool and only broke one small plastic thing some where out of 4 doors, so overall it was a huge success.
Pros: Saved me time, and energy. Helped me safely remove my doors. Strong and can be used on all different typed of doors.
Cons: Like others have said this is a bit pricey for what it is. I think 5 would be a good value for this but then again 10 is a lot cheaper than having to buy new door panels which I am sure I would have destroyed without this tool.

Totally Unnecessary
Dave from Hammond, LA on 1/20/2012
I go to Crutchfield in large part because they're very thorough when it comes to helping inept self-installers like me. The flip side of that coin, though, is that they can easily over-equip somebody who doesn't know ahead of time what some of the "recommended accessories" are for. This Dash faceplate removal tool is not some sort of ultra-specific piece that comprises the only way I could've loosened the dash panel front on my Silverado (I figured when I included it in my order that it was); the task it performed could just as easily been performed by the putty knife/spackle spreader I have in my tool box (as well as by any of my wider chisels, or even a kitchen spatula). Don't waste your money; spend it on components, then head to the kitchen drawer for a spatula when it's time to install.

A little advice
AudioChik from Fairfax, VA on 3/21/2008
This tool does work great for most applications. A tip I learned from a former co-worker was to get some electrical tape and tape up the parts of the tool that may scratch the paint where you are trying to pry pieces off. If it is too thick to fit in small places, use your screw driver until you can fit this tool under the panel. I only recommend using a screwdriver if you have patience because you can end up popping a hole right through your panel.

Does the job.

I got this because Crutchfield recommended it and I had never removed the door panels in my car before. This definately makes the job easier with less worry over damaging anything.

Scratches big time
kevin from Houston, TX on 4/3/2006
I bought one of these to use on my last install and the other reviewer is correct. It is large and thick. Becuase it is so thick, I found that it scratches the paint everywhere you shove it under the panel. I've found a screwdriver with some electrical tape on it to be a much safer method for popping a panel. That said, it does what its supposed to do, so 3 stars.

Not Useful
Ed from Washington on 2/5/2006
I bought this tool because I have a fairly new car and the idea of taking it apart was pretty frightening. As it turns out, this thing is just too bulky to really fit in anywhere. Also, the prying tip is about as fat as a screwdriver anyway, so you can't even wedge it between anything. I ended up using my screwdriver to take out all of the panels (and didn't break anything), so buying this thing was kind of a waste.

S&G Tool Aid 87650

Yeah, what he said ^^^^. Used it on the door panels on a '93 Explorer (12-year-old composite woodstuff - kinda scary) and they survived the speaker change 100%. Simple little tool, but very much worth the $ if you want your your interior to stay intact.

The right tool for the right job.

I've never removed a door panel on any car before so I bought this item - and it worked great! Don't with run the risk with a flat head screw driver of creating a stress riser (which may crack the panel) if you exert too much force on the door panel. This tool is broad and flat so it easily slides between the panel and door and will not damage the panels. If you are a first timer at removing your door panels (to replace speakers, dynamat, etc), I HIGHLY recommend picking this up. It's inexpensive and will make your installation much smoother!
