About the Niles® HD5R
A perfect solution for whole-house audio systems, or for hiding your home theater speakers, Niles® High Definition in-wall speakers deliver outstanding sound without taking up any floor space. The HD5R uses a 5-1/4" injection-molded TCC (talc, carbon, and ceramic) polypropylene woofer for solid mids and lows, and 1" Teteron® tri-laminate tweeter for smooth, transparent highs. Both drivers are mounted on a rigid baffle reinforced with anti-resonant wave bracing to reduce sound-muddying vibrations.
You can install the HD5Rs in rooms where you've always wanted music your kitchen, bedroom, family room places where conventional speakers won't always work. And these Niles® speakers are even moisture-resistant, so they're great for bathrooms, too! The included grilles are paintable, allowing them to blend seamlessly into any room's decor.
The HD5Rs feature a quick and easy mounting system, and can be installed in existing homes as well as new homes under construction. Best of all, they come with everything you'll need (except speaker wires) to install them in your walls.

Woofers: Each speaker uses a newly developed cone material that combines injection-molded polypropylene with talc, carbon and ceramic stiffening agents. The result is a cone that offers extreme stiffness and light weight for accurate, dynamic response. Additionally, the woofer employs a vented pole piece for increased bass linearity and a butyl rubber surround for improved midrange damping and clarity as well as moisture resistance. The BumpBack woofer magnet allows for far greater "throw" or voice coil excursion, resulting in high-level bass performance.
Tweeters: The 1" Teteron tweeter employs a tri-laminate design consisting of an inner textile layer which forms the dome, a high-damping layer to reduce unwanted resonances and an outside layer of urethane to add stiffness. The result is a transparently clear, sweet, natural sounding tweeter that still maintains extended frequency response. Each tweeter is housed in a precision adjustment mechanism that permits the tweeter to be accurately positioned after installation for optimum performance.
Anti-resonant Wave Bracing: The speaker's baffle design employs specially molded ribs that increase the rigidity of the baffle and raise the resonant frequency so that less "out-of-phase" cancellation takes place. The ribs are curved and crossed to further shift vibration away from low-bass canceling frequencies. This keeps bass tones rich and dynamic.
Bass and Treble Controls: Each speaker has baffle-mounted tone controls for bass and treble that enable instant fine tuning after the speakers are installed.
Moisture Resistant Construction: These speakers are suitable for use in high-moisture environments. The drivers are impervious to moisture, the grilles are made of powder-coated aluminum, and all exposed hardware is made of stainless steel. However, the speakers are not waterproof and direct contact with water should be avoided.
Infrared Sensor Mount: Each speaker baffle has a knockout designed for the Niles MS-1 Microsensor, a miniature infrared sensor. The MS-1 installs discreetly behind the aluminum grille and therefore minimizes wall clutter in your home.
No-Strip Speaker Terminals: The patented No-Strip terminal enables speakers to be connected without stripping the speaker wire. Just place the wire in the terminal and click the levers into place. Once the wire is connected to the terminal, it simply plugs into the circuit board on the back of the speaker.
Grilles: Each speaker has a powder-coated aluminum grille. Each grille has hundreds of precisely sized perforations, creating an acoustically transparent grille. The grilles are paintable.
Placement: These speakers are designed for in-wall installation between standard 2"x4" studs. For optimal imaging, position the speakers so that the distance between the listening position and the wall is 1.5 times the distance between the two brackets.
New Construction (unfinished walls): For a new construction installation, you install only the parts you need for a particular stage of construction. When the framing and wiring are finished, you install the brackets. After the drywall is up, you install the frames. Only when construction is completely finished do you put the speakers in the wall.
Existing Construction: Designed for ease of installation, the Niles mounting system makes retrofit installations simple and fast. A supplied template assures fast and accurate hole cutting. The bracket slips behind the drywall and the screws secure the bracket to the frame, sandwiching the drywall between them. The speaker baffle attaches to the frame and the grille mounts over the speaker.
Wall Cutout: 6.25"W x 9"H
